- 0:02You're listening to the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast
- 0:06with Dr. Brenna Hicks.
- 0:09Hi,
- 0:09I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:10The Kid Counselor.
- 0:11This is the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast
- 0:14where I give you insight,
- 0:15awareness,
- 0:15and enlightenment about your parenting and your relationship with your kids.
- 0:20In today's episode,
- 0:21we are continuing in the Parent Companion series.
- 0:24And we have been recently diving into
- 0:28the 7 most common issues
- 0:30that children are struggling with and why they begin therapy in the first place
- 0:34and how that will sort itself out in the child-centered process.
- 0:38So last week we covered anxiety
- 0:40and how anxious kids will work through things,
- 0:43and this week we're going to talk through power and control.
- 0:47This is usually the one that is the kicker.
- 0:49In other words,
- 0:50when a child starts to struggle with
- 0:53wanting power,
- 0:54wanting control,
- 0:56trying to take it at any opportunity,
- 0:58and pulling real hard for things to go in their direction,
- 1:03it creates a lot of friction,
- 1:05a lot of conflict,
- 1:06a lot of headache.
- 1:08And so typically
- 1:09this is one of the most common reasons why children
- 1:13end up in CCPT.
- 1:15Because
- 1:16this wreaks havoc in all kinds of scenarios.
- 1:18At
- 1:19school,
- 1:19of course,
- 1:20with teachers and staff,
- 1:22with parents at home,
- 1:23with peers and siblings.
- 1:25With
- 1:26really any scenario,
- 1:28they just will be hungry for power and control,
- 1:31and it's difficult to navigate.
- 1:33So
- 1:34we have to look at root issue first.
- 1:37It is understandably very frustrating and difficult to
- 1:41be around someone who is constantly fighting for power.
- 1:45And
- 1:46from the parenting side of it,
- 1:48it
- 1:49kind of upsets the family dynamic apple cart,
- 1:52if you will.
- 1:52In other words,
- 1:53kids are supposed to be
- 1:55the ones that are not in power
- 1:58and do not have all the control.
- 1:59And so when a child starts to fight for that,
- 2:02it can really make it difficult to just do standard normal family things.
- 2:07But I think it's
- 2:09equally important to say,
- 2:10yes,
- 2:10it's frustrating and difficult,
- 2:12but we have to understand what's going on at the heart of it.
- 2:15So,
- 2:15when a child starts to fight for power and control,
- 2:18We have to go back to the why.
- 2:21We are going to say this over and over and over again because it
- 2:24is worth repeating.
- 2:26Kids never choose to stay stuck in maladaptive patterns of behavior.
- 2:31Kids never choose to stay stuck
- 2:34with inappropriate coping mechanisms.
- 2:37They never choose
- 2:38to stay stuck in
- 2:40behavior patterns that are unhealthy.
- 2:44If they are stuck,
- 2:46it's because they don't know what to do
- 2:48and they're struggling
- 2:49and they don't see a way out.
- 2:51So almost always,
- 2:53if a child is fighting for power and control,
- 2:55we understand it's because the child has been in situations and circumstances.
- 3:01Where they have felt completely powerless
- 3:03and completely out of control.
- 3:06In other words,
- 3:07I didn't choose for mom and dad to get a divorce.
- 3:10I didn't choose to have to move across the country.
- 3:12I didn't choose to start kindergarten when I didn't want
- 3:15to leave mom and dad and go be with strangers
- 3:18all day every day.
- 3:19I didn't choose for my new sibling to be born.
- 3:22I didn't choose to have this medical crisis where I was hospitalized for 3 weeks.
- 3:27I didn't choose to get in that car accident,
- 3:29so on and so forth.
- 3:31So
- 3:31if you think about
- 3:33child's perspective,
- 3:35They
- 3:36are at the mercy of their circumstances almost all the time.
- 3:40That's level one.
- 3:42Level 2,
- 3:43another why for power and control struggles
- 3:46is kids only have control
- 3:48over a handful of things.
- 3:51And I literally mean a handful.
- 3:52Like I'm holding up
- 3:54my hand with 5 fingers.
- 3:55They only have control over a handful of things.
- 4:00They are told where to go,
- 4:02when to go,
- 4:02how to go,
- 4:03why to go.
- 4:05They have no
- 4:06governance over their own lives.
- 4:08They have no autonomy.
- 4:09They have no freedom.
- 4:11Get up,
- 4:12do your homework,
- 4:13grab your backpack,
- 4:14get on the bus,
- 4:16get in bed,
- 4:16brush your teeth,
- 4:17take a bath.
- 4:19They are ordered around all day every day.
- 4:23And they only have control over a handful of things,
- 4:26and those handful of things don't outweigh,
- 4:28even come close.
- 4:31To
- 4:32how little control and power they have
- 4:35and their perception thereof.
- 4:37They,
- 4:37they feel like they're just.
- 4:40Steered
- 4:41like someone is the marionette and they're just the puppet
- 4:44all day every day,
- 4:46that would make anyone nuts.
- 4:48Put yourself in those shoes,
- 4:50put yourself in that position
- 4:52where someone other than you
- 4:54gets to dictate pretty much your every move.
- 4:58You'd
- 4:59be crazy by the end of the day,
- 5:00legit.
- 5:02And this is the child's reality all day every day,
- 5:04and we are so callous to this,
- 5:07we don't even realize
- 5:09how awful that feels for kids.
- 5:11And then we get really irritated
- 5:14when kids fight for power and control.
- 5:16They have a right to fight for that.
- 5:19It's not pleasant for us,
- 5:20but good for them for saying,
- 5:22I've had enough of this.
- 5:23I am tired
- 5:24of just being dictated to,
- 5:26and I'm tired of circumstances in the world,
- 5:28which is big and scary and unpredictable and overwhelming,
- 5:32just absolutely consuming my life,
- 5:34and I'm just like floating on a crazy sea,
- 5:36and I have no ship and I have no rudder and I have nothing,
- 5:39and here I am.
- 5:41It's no wonder they fight for power and control,
- 5:44y'all.
- 5:45So we really have to understand the why.
- 5:48They're not doing it to tick you off.
- 5:50They're not doing it because they're trying to manipulate you.
- 5:53They're not doing it because
- 5:54they just find joy in creating conflict.
- 5:58And by the way,
- 5:59I've heard all of those hypotheses.
- 6:02And more.
- 6:03I have a very long list
- 6:04of,
- 6:05of how
- 6:06I'm told the child is behaving.
- 6:08Well,
- 6:08they're just trying to be manipulative.
- 6:10Well,
- 6:10they just like,
- 6:12no,
- 6:13no,
- 6:13no,
- 6:13no.
- 6:15Kids are good
- 6:17Kids are good.
- 6:18Kids are incredible.
- 6:19Kids are awesome.
- 6:20Kids are amazing.
- 6:23They are the most
- 6:24lovely beings.
- 6:26But they get stuck in maladaptive coping behaviors.
- 6:31Power and control's one of them.
- 6:33Understandably so.
- 6:35If I can only control my eating,
- 6:36sleeping,
- 6:37toileting
- 6:38behavior,
- 6:39I,
- 6:39you know what,
- 6:40that's not enough.
- 6:42So they will fight for power and control because
- 6:46they feel that's the only.
- 6:49Antidote
- 6:50I have no power in my life.
- 6:52Well,
- 6:53watch this.
- 6:53I can have power right now.
- 6:56I have no control over anything.
- 6:57Well,
- 6:58watch this.
- 6:58I can control this.
- 7:01It is
- 7:03just
- 7:04the way that things evolve when kids have felt
- 7:07at the mercy of circumstance.
- 7:09So,
- 7:10what does that look like in the playroom now that we've
- 7:12kind of done a little deep dive into what's going on?
- 7:14How does that sort itself out and address itself in the playroom?
- 7:18Well,
- 7:19the beauty of a child-centered playroom
- 7:21is that
- 7:22the child has power and control.
- 7:25They're in charge.
- 7:27They get to decide what to do.
- 7:29And they largely get to
- 7:31govern
- 7:32the whole session.
- 7:34Obviously,
- 7:34if we need to set limits,
- 7:35we do.
- 7:37But for the most part,
- 7:39we trust them,
- 7:41we believe in them,
- 7:42and we give them the environment and the relationship
- 7:45to do whatever they need to do.
- 7:47So here's what will happen.
- 7:48A kid that is really needing power and control,
- 7:52they come in
- 7:53and
- 7:54they love the fact that they have power and control in the playroom.
- 7:58I mean,
- 7:58this is what they've needed their whole lives.
- 8:00You know,
- 8:01all 1,416 days of it.
- 8:04So,
- 8:05look,
- 8:05I've been waiting 1400 days for this.
- 8:07Here we go,
- 8:08we're finally ready.
- 8:09All right,
- 8:10I get to be in charge.
- 8:12And what's interesting is
- 8:14They get to be in charge,
- 8:16and then they take it even further.
- 8:18So being in charge is not enough.
- 8:21We always talk about a pendulum,
- 8:22and if you've been listening for any length of time,
- 8:24you understand this notion,
- 8:25but I'll briefly kind of make sense of it again
- 8:28because I know every day we've got new listeners.
- 8:30So if you're new,
- 8:30I'm so glad you're here.
- 8:31Welcome.
- 8:32We are
- 8:33a group of people that absolutely adore kids and we're trying to be the best
- 8:37version of ourselves so that we can help them be the best versions of themselves.
- 8:41So,
- 8:42really glad you're here.
- 8:42Thanks for hanging out with us.
- 8:45And when we think about
- 8:47what's going on for a child,
- 8:49everything is very black and white
- 8:51and extreme
- 8:52in a child's world.
- 8:53So you are either good
- 8:55or you are bad.
- 8:57Someone either likes you or they hate you.
- 9:00Everything is very opposite driven for children.
- 9:03Because they're not rational.
- 9:04They're not cognitive.
- 9:06The gray area requires a lot of brain function.
- 9:09OK,
- 9:10so,
- 9:11when a child comes in and they get to be in charge,
- 9:13that's not enough.
- 9:14They believe,
- 9:15you know what,
- 9:15I never have control.
- 9:16I never have power.
- 9:18I can't just be told that I have power and control.
- 9:20I'm going to take
- 9:22ultimate
- 9:23dictatorial
- 9:25power.
- 9:27Because if I
- 9:28don't want to feel powerless,
- 9:29I need to have
- 9:30all the power.
- 9:32It's a pendulum swing.
- 9:33That's the way you can think about it.
- 9:34That's the illustration that I said I talk about a lot.
- 9:37So you think about it.
- 9:39Either end of the pendulum,
- 9:41either end of a spectrum is unhealthy
- 9:43for anything.
- 9:45You can't always be mean,
- 9:46you can't always be kind.
- 9:47You can't always have power.
- 9:49You can't always have no power.
- 9:51You can't always
- 9:52be aggressive.
- 9:53You can't always be passive.
- 9:55Any
- 9:55end of a spectrum
- 9:57is unhealthy.
- 9:59Health is found in the center where the balance is.
- 10:02So a child comes in
- 10:03and they're like,
- 10:04well,
- 10:04I get power in here,
- 10:05so I'm going to take power in here.
- 10:08It becomes dictatorial,
- 10:10demanding,
- 10:11over the top power.
- 10:14Shut up.
- 10:14Do that.
- 10:15Get over there.
- 10:16You're not allowed to talk.
- 10:17I was jailed just as a little cute illustration.
- 10:21I was jailed
- 10:22every week.
- 10:248 weeks straight
- 10:26Handcuffed,
- 10:27thrown in jail,
- 10:28which technically was behind my puppet theater,
- 10:31just so you have a visual for this.
- 10:33So I was shoved behind my puppet theater,
- 10:35handcuffed.
- 10:36I was jailed.
- 10:37My notes were ripped out of my hand.
- 10:39He scratched X's all over my note sheet
- 10:42with a marker.
- 10:44And every single week
- 10:46said,
- 10:47you're gonna be in here for 8000 years.
- 10:518000,
- 10:51that every week I was in jail for 8000 years.
- 10:55And then it evolved into,
- 10:57you don't get food,
- 10:59you don't get water,
- 11:00you don't even get to get out for Christmas.
- 11:04I mean,
- 11:05it,
- 11:05it was
- 11:07power.
- 11:08OK.
- 11:09Why?
- 11:10Why is that happening?
- 11:11Because
- 11:12they believe.
- 11:14That I have to have
- 11:16all the power
- 11:18because I hate having none of the power
- 11:20or perception of none of the power.
- 11:24So,
- 11:24over time,
- 11:25what happens in the playroom,
- 11:27you get that level of dictatorial power.
- 11:29They want all of it,
- 11:30all the time.
- 11:32Unequivocal power,
- 11:33dictatorial power.
- 11:35It's all mine
- 11:37You're never going to have any
- 11:40But they know that
- 11:41that's not appropriate.
- 11:43They know it's not healthy.
- 11:45They know they can't
- 11:47exist like that.
- 11:50So what happens over
- 11:51certain
- 11:53time frame?
- 11:54Over the course of weeks.
- 11:56Out of the blue one day.
- 11:58A child's going to give me back
- 12:01the smallest amount of power.
- 12:04Now,
- 12:05often I'm given a small amount of power and then it is immediately revoked.
- 12:09So like,
- 12:09actually,
- 12:10you don't have to be handcuffed today.
- 12:14That is a huge shift
- 12:16for a kid in power and control.
- 12:18And our job is to neutrally acknowledge that,
- 12:22oh,
- 12:22you're choosing for me not to be handcuffed today.
- 12:24It's not,
- 12:25oh,
- 12:25thank God.
- 12:26Oh my gosh,
- 12:27I've been waiting for this moment.
- 12:28That's not CCPT.
- 12:30I know that's how a lot of you would react,
- 12:32so don't blame yourself,
- 12:33but you're not CCPTs.
- 12:35So,
- 12:36we're neutral.
- 12:37Oh,
- 12:37you're choosing for me not to be handcuffed today,
- 12:39and within 30 seconds,
- 12:40we're usually handcuffed again.
- 12:42But why is that important?
- 12:44Because the child gave me the tiniest little bit of power.
- 12:46Why?
- 12:47Because they know they can't take it all the time.
- 12:49They know they can't have that all the time.
- 12:51They know they can't lord that over us all the time.
- 12:53It's not healthy.
- 12:54The pendulum is starting to shift back.
- 12:57And eventually what happens is
- 12:59the child will actually put themselves in a position where they have no power.
- 13:02And I know for some of you,
- 13:03you're like,
- 13:04my kid would never do that.
- 13:05Yes,
- 13:06they would.
- 13:07That's the beauty of CCPT.
- 13:10A kid will come in.
- 13:11The kid that told me I was in jail 8000 years.
- 13:15We were walking back to the playroom
- 13:17on week nine.
- 13:18We weren't even in there yet,
- 13:20and he says,
- 13:21I have to go to jail today.
- 13:23And our,
- 13:25our mantra as CCPTs
- 13:27is
- 13:28neutral on the outside,
- 13:29party on the inside.
- 13:31So,
- 13:31I was like internally doing backflips and cartwheels down the hallway.
- 13:35What the child saw was,
- 13:37oh,
- 13:38you're gonna be in jail today.
- 13:41But inside I was like,
- 13:42ah,
- 13:42the angels are singing the hallelujah chorus.
- 13:45OK,
- 13:45why?
- 13:46Not because I didn't want to be in jail.
- 13:47I don't care.
- 13:48I've spent
- 13:49collective years of my life in jail with CCPT kids.
- 13:52So,
- 13:53it's not because I didn't want to be in jail that day.
- 13:56It's because I knew what an important shift
- 13:58in the child's power and control needs that was.
- 14:01He's willing to put himself in a powerless position.
- 14:04Why?
- 14:04Because the pendulum swung completely the other way.
- 14:07I had all of it.
- 14:09Now I'm going to give myself none of it.
- 14:10Guess what they learn?
- 14:12Neither end of this is where I want to be.
- 14:14I don't want to have all of it.
- 14:15I don't want to have none of it.
- 14:16So how do I find middle ground?
- 14:18And that's exactly what they do.
- 14:20They get to a point where they want power sometimes.
- 14:22They don't want it other times.
- 14:24They're OK with having it.
- 14:25They're OK with not having it.
- 14:26They're not fighting for it so often.
- 14:28They're not pushing for it so hard.
- 14:30And part of the process is that we're constantly giving them choices.
- 14:34When kids are given choices,
- 14:36they have control.
- 14:38So if maybe your child is not in
- 14:41play therapy,
- 14:41working with a play therapist,
- 14:43but your kid is a power hungry kid,
- 14:46the more control that you can give them through choices,
- 14:50the more they're going to feel,
- 14:51you know what,
- 14:52I have a measure of control in things in my life,
- 14:55and it will help.
- 14:57Now,
- 14:57they may actually need to process it at a deeper level with a therapist at some point,
- 15:01but that is certainly the first step.
- 15:03They need to feel that they have a measure of control,
- 15:05and they have that when they're given choices.
- 15:08So,
- 15:09I hope that that illustrates how things get sorted
- 15:12out in play because a lot of parents say,
- 15:14how is just playing with you
- 15:16going to stop my kid from being a dictator?
- 15:20Well,
- 15:20I just gave you one specific story
- 15:23of how it happened for that kid.
- 15:24And guess what?
- 15:25Parents started reporting
- 15:27a change,
- 15:27teachers started reporting a change,
- 15:29I started seeing a change.
- 15:31Why?
- 15:32Because he realized,
- 15:33I don't like the feeling
- 15:36of being a dictator.
- 15:38I don't want to be that person.
- 15:39Kids become better versions of themselves
- 15:42in the playroom.
- 15:43I don't want to be a dictator.
- 15:44I don't want to be the one that orders people
- 15:46around and yells at people and makes people feel bad.
- 15:48No kid wants to stay stuck there.
- 15:51So they'll naturally figure out a way to get themselves out of it,
- 15:54and they have to swing the pendulum the other way,
- 15:56and then they find balanced center.
- 15:59So I hope that is helpful to illustrate the power and control behavior.
- 16:02We have 5 more.
- 16:03So this is a round of 7 of the most common behaviors.
- 16:06So we'll be diving into 5 more in these next 5 weeks.
- 16:10If you want to reach out to me,
- 16:11say hello,
