Latest / Patriots Unfiltered / Training Camp-Cast 7/26: High Intensity and Big Plays Highlight Day 4, Full Practice Recap
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The intensity was back up at Patriots training camp on Saturday.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Big plays on both sides of the ball. Let's break
- 0:05Speaker 1: it all down. Welcome everybody to the Patriots training camp
- 0:17Speaker 1: cast on Mike you So, joined by Paul Perlo and
- 0:19Speaker 1: Evan Lazarre and guys. This was just a fun practice,
- 0:21Speaker 1: a lot of fun, some big plays.
- 0:23Speaker 2: You know.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I think both sides of the ball had some moments,
- 0:25Speaker 1: but Paul would stood up most of you today.
- 0:28Speaker 3: I thought Drake may mainly made some nice passes downfield.
- 0:31Speaker 3: First time we really got to see him throw it
- 0:33Speaker 3: a little bit, say, beyond the ten yard mark with
- 0:35Speaker 3: any sort of consistency. There was ups and downs, and
- 0:38Speaker 3: that's why I think the coaches will probably be happy
- 0:41Speaker 3: because I think both sides of the ball had things
- 0:43Speaker 3: to be encouraged about, but also plenty of things.
- 0:45Speaker 2: To try to correct. Yeah.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Big play of the day probably a big throat to
- 0:48Speaker 4: Pop Douglas.
- 0:49Speaker 5: Play of camp so far, exactly what we all love
- 0:51Speaker 5: to see from Drake, you know, off script, rolling to
- 0:54Speaker 5: his right, flicked it off of one foot like fifty
- 0:57Speaker 5: to fifty five yards in the air to Pop Douglas,
- 0:59Speaker 5: and you could see it developing. You're like, oh, he's
- 1:02Speaker 5: going to get behind the safety there, and Drake put
- 1:04Speaker 5: it right on them. So it was exactly the offscript
- 1:08Speaker 5: play that you're probably imagining in your head is exactly
- 1:10Speaker 5: what it looked like on the field. So that was
- 1:12Speaker 5: really good to see. But like Paul said, and there's
- 1:15Speaker 5: some ups and downs. Like I thought, there were some
- 1:16Speaker 5: incompletions in this practice, maybe a few more than what
- 1:20Speaker 5: we seen in previous practices from Drake, but overall you
- 1:23Speaker 5: saw some of those deep bombs down the field, which
- 1:25Speaker 5: is what we wanted to see as well.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yeah, the first two days of practice was primarily focused
- 1:29Speaker 1: on first and second down, a lot of completions, not
- 1:31Speaker 1: a lot of incompletions, balls hitting the ground. Today they
- 1:34Speaker 1: add in third down a little bit more aggressive, so
- 1:37Speaker 1: I think the pressure was on a little bit more
- 1:38Speaker 1: figuratively and you know, literally on the field with some
- 1:41Speaker 1: of the defensive players getting in the backfield. Robert Splane,
- 1:44Speaker 1: key On White, Milton Williams, those guys were all again
- 1:47Speaker 1: disruptive at times, but again the offense still managed to
- 1:50Speaker 1: make some place.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I would totally agree.
- 1:52Speaker 3: I thought the running backs got free a few times
- 1:54Speaker 3: on the linebacker. Splane did show some. I mean, I
- 1:57Speaker 3: think you had back to back plays we had nice
- 1:59Speaker 3: you know, pass perps, but on the downfield stuff, I
- 2:02Speaker 3: thought they were susceptible. That's why I think it's probably
- 2:04Speaker 3: a good sign. We've talked about a couple of times
- 2:07Speaker 3: in the last few years about how we would come
- 2:09Speaker 3: in from these days while the defense just dominated today,
- 2:12Speaker 3: or you know, the defense looked like they were out
- 2:14Speaker 3: to lunch today. Today, I thought there was kind of
- 2:17Speaker 3: some ups and downs for both sides. Pass protection, we'd
- 2:19Speaker 3: be my number one concern still, and I just can't
- 2:22Speaker 3: wait for Monday so I can stop giving the caveat
- 2:25Speaker 3: of well, they're not in pad, so we don't know yet.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Yeah, well, Evan, we got a little bit of a
- 2:28Speaker 4: precursor today.
- 2:29Speaker 2: There were some one on ones.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Usually that those drills reserved for when the pads do
- 2:32Speaker 1: come on. Seems like they're setting the stage a little
- 2:34Speaker 1: bit for that. But you know, as much as the
- 2:36Speaker 1: team periods might have been inconsistent with the protection.
- 2:39Speaker 4: You did see some good stuff in those individual drills.
- 2:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:41Speaker 5: I thought Will Campbell had two really good reps at
- 2:43Speaker 5: left tackle against you frontline players, Kean White, Anthony Jennings,
- 2:47Speaker 5: so that was good to see. Anybody that tries to
- 2:50Speaker 5: beat Will Campbell around his edge, it's tough. When you
- 2:52Speaker 5: get a beat, it's usually to the inside, which we
- 2:55Speaker 5: saw maybe once or twice in the team period. So
- 2:58Speaker 5: I'm with Paul, it's a it depends on which way
- 3:01Speaker 5: you want to look at it. From Deuce's perspective, his
- 3:03Speaker 5: defense and his pass rush was getting after it. From
- 3:06Speaker 5: the offenses perspective, there definitely was some pressure on the
- 3:09Speaker 5: quarterback today during the team periods that needs to be
- 3:11Speaker 5: cleaned up, especially I would say the free runners's it's
- 3:15Speaker 5: one thing to get beat on the line of scrimmage.
- 3:17Speaker 5: That's going to happen from time to time, you know,
- 3:19Speaker 5: from time to time. But today I thought there were
- 3:21Speaker 5: two three instances where guys were coming in free unblocked,
- 3:25Speaker 5: and those are the ones that you want to get,
- 3:28Speaker 5: you know, taken care of there.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Now, if you and I watched practice together, I want
- 3:31Speaker 1: to highlight something. I don't know if Paul saw this
- 3:32Speaker 1: or if this caught your eye, but noticed a little
- 3:35Speaker 1: bit maybe extra rotation going on with the safety position.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Usually the first team defense or whatever you want to
- 3:41Speaker 1: call them, the top line guys or out there. But
- 3:43Speaker 1: seemed to me today and Ev and I were talking
- 3:44Speaker 1: a little bit about Paul don't know this if you
- 3:46Speaker 1: notice this, but it seemed like they and ja Bill
- 3:48Speaker 1: Peppers was a little banged up too. I think for
- 3:50Speaker 1: a moment maybe that played into it, but it seemed
- 3:52Speaker 1: like the safety position, guys like Craig Woodson, Jalen Hawkins,
- 3:56Speaker 1: you know, Marcus Dep's getting maybe a little bit more
- 3:58Speaker 1: reps than some of the other positions.
- 4:00Speaker 4: And if you can comment on that.
- 4:01Speaker 6: A little bit, yeah, absolutely, And we said this off there.
- 4:05Speaker 5: I believe they're trying to find that third safety, you know,
- 4:07Speaker 5: who is going to be that guy when it's dime situations,
- 4:10Speaker 5: third downs, not only to be that third safety, but
- 4:14Speaker 5: more specifically to play up top as that free safety
- 4:17Speaker 5: potentially in the deep part of the field, especially the
- 4:19Speaker 5: middle part of the field. So that I think is
- 4:22Speaker 5: something that they're still looking for. They probably just my
- 4:26Speaker 5: breed on it. Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers, you know
- 4:30Speaker 5: what they're good at, and they're better closer to the
- 4:32Speaker 5: line of scrimmage, they're better playing in the box. They're
- 4:35Speaker 5: better when they're moving downhill instead of moving backwards. And
- 4:39Speaker 5: my guess is that they're trying to allow those guys
- 4:41Speaker 5: to do what they do best. But in order to
- 4:44Speaker 5: do that, they have to find a third safety who
- 4:47Speaker 5: can play the deep part of that field, you know,
- 4:48Speaker 5: Deron Harmon, Devin mccordy type roles. So I think they're
- 4:53Speaker 5: still looking for that, not that they don't have it,
- 4:55Speaker 5: but they're just still trying to figure out who that is.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Yeah, the Kyle Dugger part of this is something I've
- 4:59Speaker 3: noticed since day of camp. When they go nickel or
- 5:02Speaker 3: you know, the multiple defensive backs. There have been a
- 5:04Speaker 3: lot of occasions where he's come out. So I didn't
- 5:07Speaker 3: really notice Pepper's getting nicked up at all today. So
- 5:10Speaker 3: you guys might be right about that, but I totally
- 5:11Speaker 3: agree with Evan's assessment. You got to find out what
- 5:14Speaker 3: the other guys can do. They need someone who sort
- 5:18Speaker 3: of profiles to that old Devin mccordy kind of style,
- 5:20Speaker 3: and you're going to find out if Hawkins can do it.
- 5:22Speaker 3: You're gonna find out if the rookie Craig Woodson can
- 5:24Speaker 3: do it.
- 5:25Speaker 2: They got a lot of reps today. I did notice that.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Tug a little housekeeping, Paul, you've been here longer than
- 5:29Speaker 1: Evan and I have, and I've never quite seen Morgan
- 5:33Speaker 1: Ramandre Stevenson weren't there for the start of practice. They
- 5:36Speaker 1: came in about halfway through, and then they hopped right
- 5:39Speaker 1: into the team drills.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I was surprised.
- 5:40Speaker 3: They're clearly they were trying to keep them fresher because
- 5:44Speaker 3: they might they probably both dealing with something because they
- 5:47Speaker 3: spent some time warming up with some trainers late. I
- 5:50Speaker 3: don't know if there's anything more to it than that,
- 5:53Speaker 3: but yeah, you're right. As soon as the first team
- 5:55Speaker 3: period came, they were both in there. A matter of fact,
- 5:56Speaker 3: I think Stevenson carried the ball on like the second
- 5:59Speaker 3: play and Morgan Moses was at left tackle to.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Start the first team period. So yeah, it was a
- 6:04Speaker 2: little bit of an odd setup. Yeah.
- 6:05Speaker 1: A couple other at right tackle, yeah, yeah, a couple
- 6:08Speaker 1: other pieces that It looked like Jilani Tobai left uh.
- 6:11Speaker 1: He experienced a calf injury during the spring which limited him.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Initially he was able to come off, but maybe a
- 6:17Speaker 1: setback for him today. He left, did not return. Carlton
- 6:20Speaker 1: Davis looked like he was rehaving as well. Seems like
- 6:23Speaker 1: he's on some kind of plan where they're you know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: day on, day off kind of thing.
- 6:27Speaker 4: We'll see, we got a day off coming up. Pad's
- 6:29Speaker 4: coming up if he then.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Is able to go.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And lastly, no Jalen Polk, which continues to be a
- 6:33Speaker 1: little bit of a disappointment. He now missed this whole
- 6:35Speaker 1: first chunk of the first four practices, disappointing for.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Him in his second season. Then he hasn't been able
- 6:40Speaker 4: to get going.
- 6:40Speaker 2: It's going to be hard to play catch up.
- 6:42Speaker 5: Yeah, So you don't want to look too much into
- 6:44Speaker 5: these early days of camp with Carlton Davis because Carlon
- 6:46Speaker 5: Dave's obviously going to be here and he's going to
- 6:48Speaker 5: contribute and play a big role. But it has given
- 6:51Speaker 5: us an opportunity, I suppose to see who are the
- 6:53Speaker 5: next men up at corner and Alex Austin and Marcus
- 6:56Speaker 5: Jones are definitely the two guys that have been playing
- 6:59Speaker 5: the most when Carlon Davis is and here Austin just
- 7:01Speaker 5: immediately goes into that outside cornerback spot opposite a Gonzalez
- 7:05Speaker 5: with with Marcus Jones in the slot and in those
- 7:08Speaker 5: three corner looks.
- 7:09Speaker 6: So there's some intel there.
- 7:10Speaker 5: But I also just think Carlton Davis is one of
- 7:13Speaker 5: those guys that has had some injuries in the past,
- 7:15Speaker 5: and they might look at it and say, these maintenance days,
- 7:18Speaker 5: as Mike Rabel described it the other day, maybe that's
- 7:21Speaker 5: what's best for him to try to keep him healthy
- 7:24Speaker 5: for the entire season. So maybe it will be a
- 7:26Speaker 5: one day on, one day off thing for Carlton Davis
- 7:29Speaker 5: in camp.
- 7:30Speaker 4: So we just had a little bit of a kicker
- 7:31Speaker 4: period as well. Eight total kicks.
- 7:34Speaker 1: We didn't double check these, I mean, this was from
- 7:35Speaker 1: our purse, but we had Borgalis two for four and
- 7:38Speaker 1: then we had Romo three for four and without what
- 7:40Speaker 1: you saw down below.
- 7:41Speaker 2: So it was fun.
- 7:42Speaker 3: There were some questions, I mean, and I'm not making
- 7:44Speaker 3: fun of anyone because it's kind of hard to really determine.
- 7:47Speaker 3: I had Borer Gallas three for four and I had
- 7:49Speaker 3: Romo four for four. I'm not telling you I'm right
- 7:52Speaker 3: and you're wrong. Did he definitely Borgyles definitely if he
- 7:56Speaker 3: missed two.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I wouldn't be surprised. The first two very close.
- 8:00Speaker 6: Yeah, So we had those two, the first one definitely,
- 8:03Speaker 6: and they.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Will both go in sideway. I don't like that.
- 8:06Speaker 3: I was I felt better the last two they were
- 8:08Speaker 3: more traditional with the height that you're looking for and
- 8:11Speaker 3: over end. So maybe he sort of got rid of
- 8:13Speaker 3: those jips that because I don't like the way that
- 8:15Speaker 3: some of those kicks came off his foot.
- 8:16Speaker 4: That's what I said to Evan.
- 8:17Speaker 1: I mean, the first two questionable at best, and then
- 8:20Speaker 1: that third one was a fifty yarder and he kind
- 8:22Speaker 1: of felt like he needed it and it did feel
- 8:24Speaker 1: like he hit that one, So you know, something to
- 8:26Speaker 1: keep an eye on these kicker competitions. You never know
- 8:28Speaker 1: quite how it's all going to come together. But we'll
- 8:30Speaker 1: see if he can turn it around next week. So guys,
- 8:33Speaker 1: anything else I'm missing. Of course, we're going to go
- 8:35Speaker 1: into pads on Monday.
- 8:36Speaker 4: We all are excited for that for sure.
- 8:38Speaker 1: This felt like a really good practice though, to set
- 8:40Speaker 1: that up the competition up tick. Both sides were punching back.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Both sides made plays. I think both are going to
- 8:46Speaker 1: go into Monday's practice saying hey, let's keep the total
- 8:49Speaker 1: petitive level.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Totally agree with that.
- 8:50Speaker 3: I have one final thing that I'll just say about
- 8:52Speaker 3: the receivers. You know we're talking all about, you know,
- 8:55Speaker 3: all the different competitions. I think to Mario Douglas has
- 8:57Speaker 3: had a really good start to camp, and I thought.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Today was probably his best day.
- 9:01Speaker 3: We're gonna everybody's gonna talk about the bomb, and that
- 9:03Speaker 3: was the play that stood out to me too. I'm
- 9:04Speaker 3: not telling you shouldn't be excited about a play like that,
- 9:07Speaker 3: but just some plays on the sideline, some plays, you know,
- 9:11Speaker 3: jumping up in traffic, sitting in some soft spots in
- 9:14Speaker 3: the zone. I just think he's been really active and
- 9:16Speaker 3: he's caught everything thrown his way to Mario Douglas has
- 9:19Speaker 3: been a very productive player for them, and that's what
- 9:22Speaker 3: a lot of people thought that he could be in
- 9:24Speaker 3: Josh mcdiniels's offense.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Yeah, he looks looks the part and then some of
- 9:27Speaker 5: that slot receiver role. And I think there were some
- 9:30Speaker 5: doubts maybe by some people, if he exactly fit the
- 9:33Speaker 5: McDaniels prototype to play inside at a high volume in
- 9:38Speaker 5: a high volume targets guy with his body type. But
- 9:41Speaker 5: he's just looked fantastic. I mean it's not even just
- 9:44Speaker 5: that he's getting open. He's also making some incredible catches,
- 9:46Speaker 5: like acrobatic, you know, over his kind of what I'm.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Talking about, things that would think could be in his
- 9:51Speaker 2: skill set.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think we actually posted one of those
- 9:54Speaker 5: from earlier in the week that you can see on
- 9:55Speaker 5: our social medias. But it's really, uh, that's what stood
- 9:59Speaker 5: out to me the most is you know, you can
- 10:00Speaker 5: get open. You know, he's got juice, he's got speed,
- 10:03Speaker 5: and you can separate. But his ball skills have been
- 10:05Speaker 5: tremendous in this camp so far as well. So he
- 10:09Speaker 5: always seems to have good camps because he's so fast
- 10:11Speaker 5: and shifty that when you can't get your hands on him,
- 10:14Speaker 5: it's really hard to cover him. But these feel real,
- 10:16Speaker 5: more real than some of those just little seven yard
- 10:20Speaker 5: in cuts and slants and things like that.
- 10:22Speaker 3: We got room, Yeah, we got room where you know,
- 10:25Speaker 3: you know what when you see it's you know, it
- 10:27Speaker 3: looks the right way, it looks the right way.
- 10:30Speaker 4: It's plenty of room at my bandwagon always.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Well, that's going to wrap up this first what prologue
- 10:35Speaker 1: of practices, the helmet and shells version, and we're going
- 10:37Speaker 1: to get into Paths on Monday. If you're not able
- 10:39Speaker 1: to make it down here to Jillette Stadium, tune into
- 10:41Speaker 1: Patriots on Filter.
- 10:42Speaker 4: We will be live during that padded.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Practice and if you can't make it to that, we'll
- 10:45Speaker 1: have another Patriots Training Camp cast for you on Monday afternoon.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Hey this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
