- 0:53So we are back after a two-week summer break.
- 0:56In the last episode, the Sports Therapy Session podcast, which is episode 208,
- 1:00we brought you a debate about statutory regulation for sports therapists.
- 1:05Seems so long ago now, but that's what it was.
- 1:08It's available, as always, on all popular podcast apps and YouTube and also
- 1:12Android users. You can now get Apple podcasts on your phone.
- 1:15I have a little Google of that. It's very simple. You just go to their website,
- 1:19add it as a shortcut, and you can access Apple Podcasts on your Android phone, which is lovely.
- 1:26So, yes, statutory regulation for sports therapists is something a lot of therapists
- 1:29feel would help our industry.
- 1:31As the episode revealed, there are definitely some disadvantages as well as
- 1:36some significant barriers to it ever happening.
- 1:38At the end of that episode, we sent out an invite to
- 1:41other professional associations for sports therapists to discuss
- 1:45the points we raised and were raised by my wonderful guests
- 1:48and the live audience and hopefully we are
- 1:51planning a follow-up episode in the future where we'll
- 1:53get a few of us all together to talk around the big round table as i say you
- 1:57can find that episode i do recommend you ever listen to it there was some really
- 2:00interesting stuff on it as always just go to your favorite podcast app or if
- 2:04you want to watch it live and see the faces of our guests then it is at youtube
- 2:07and also at our website thesta.co.uk.
- 2:12Tonight episode 209 is all about Therapy Expo 2024 at the Birmingham NEC on
- 2:20Wednesday the 27th and Thursday the 28th of November.
- 2:26A little early, I hear you cry, even if it is the UK's leading event for sports
- 2:30therapists, sports rehab specialists, massage therapists, physiotherapists,
- 2:33osteopaths, chiropractors, and other MSK healthcare professionals.
- 2:35It is a little early, you might think, but it's not at all. It's actually 99
- 2:39days, which brings it much closer than you might have realised.
- 2:42And we know, and this is one of the things we're going to talk about tonight.
- 2:45Every year we get feedback from therapists who weren't able to attend,
- 2:50that maybe they didn't didn't have enough money, that they couldn't find accommodation.
- 2:55There was no train tickets left and so on and so on. And our feedback is nearly
- 2:59always the same. It has been for multiple years now.
- 3:02Book earlier. So this is why we're doing it now.
- 3:05This is why we're doing it just towards the end of August. This is your wake
- 3:08up call official for Therapy Expo.
- 3:11You have 99 days.
- 3:14Every time I say you've got 99 somethings, I want to follow it up with it, but I can't do that.
- 3:17But yeah, you've got 99 days left to to sort things
- 3:20out to get your affairs in order and hopefully join us at the
- 3:23birmingham nec on wednesday 27th and thursday 28th of
- 3:27november so tonight with me to discuss everything therapy expo 2024 what it
- 3:32can offer you and your business i'm going to bring them up very shortly i have
- 3:36i've got a great pleasure of bringing you therapy expo content producer molly
- 3:39benson also therapy expo business development manager vernon smeed also joining
- 3:45us This is Anna Maria Mazzieri,
- 3:46director of the SD School and creator of the very popular Hands-On Hub open-air
- 3:50theatre at Therapy Expo.
- 3:51And also Gary Benson, founder of the STA and creator of the equally famous and
- 3:57popular Sports Therapy Association Therapy Update Theatre at Therapy Expo.
- 4:01So we've got loads we can talk to you about. As always, people,
- 4:03if you've joined us live, then do ask questions.
- 4:06This is your chance to speak to the content manager and the business development person.
- 4:11So it's like really let those questions free. If they can't answer you,
- 4:14we'll find someone who can and we will update it as always.
- 4:18So without further ado, I'm going to switch off my phone so it stops making
- 4:21beeping noises and I shall bring up tonight's guests for Therapy Expo 2024. Getting ready.
- 4:29Music.
- 4:39Hi everybody how are you evening all hi everyone
- 4:43thank you very much for joining us everyone very excited about this i
- 4:46hope you are well particularly thank you to molly
- 4:50benson content manager and vernon smeed and
- 4:53business development manager so it's it's wonderful to have
- 4:55you two thank you very much giving up your time thank you
- 4:58we've already got loads of people i'm very nice to
- 5:01see people joining us live as well remember people if you have joined us oh
- 5:05i've got a message already uh coming up early and fresh martin
- 5:08nicolai arnoldson christensen oh my
- 5:11god throw him out throw him out it's just got a
- 5:14question here which we'll address to anna maria later on very therapy expert
- 5:172024 related has anna maria cut her hair well we'll deal with that later on
- 5:22when we can see anna maria martin but do stick around and we'll there's a nice
- 5:25little hook there we'll bring the answer to that later on right let's start
- 5:30off molly and vernon like i say thank.
- 5:31You very much for giving up your time and this is the 11th
- 5:34i think we decided the 11th therapy expo i believe
- 5:37since it started back in 2013 in manchester
- 5:41where it was for the first two years i'm very happy
- 5:43to say the sports therapy associations have the pleasure of being
- 5:46involved in all 11 of those events and will be this year as well but
- 5:50for listeners who aren't aware of therapy expo and we always we started
- 5:53off saying hopefully at the 2000 or so people who
- 5:56listen to this podcast hopefully a load of you haven't heard
- 5:59of therapy expo otherwise we'd just be telling people already know about it
- 6:01what's happening when they already know about it so either Molly
- 6:05or Vernon what is and it's difficult to say what is Therapy
- 6:08Expo and what makes it different than from other kind
- 6:11of soft tissue therapy orientated conferences in the UK
- 6:14I think I think to answer that Matt I think Therapy
- 6:17Expo is the only I would
- 6:20say national event now which caters for cross profession
- 6:24so I think what you've got there is you've
- 6:27got a number of different medical professionals or clinical professionals
- 6:30all under one roof at the same time and it's quite separate to other events
- 6:35which could be they a lot of governing bodies sometimes have their own conferences
- 6:39with ours we cater for everybody and there is content there for all the different
- 6:43types of profession and that's as far as i'm aware that is the only event in
- 6:48the uk that caters for that.
- 6:50That's really cool to hear because i mean kind of multidisciplinary and kind of getting people
- 6:55from different professions to work together and be in the same roof
- 6:59is something we've talked about a lot on the podcast because ultimately that's
- 7:02where healthcare should and is going because
- 7:05we're catering for the needs of the patient or client as opposed to
- 7:08just giving our own services and trying to hold them to ourselves so that's that's
- 7:11a really important point that's cool molly you're nodding your head proving
- 7:14me there yeah no i said i'd have said probably along the same lines not you
- 7:18know it's multi-professional and it's not only about providing content for these
- 7:22different professions but it's about bringing them together and showing showing
- 7:25the benefits and the case studies
- 7:26of where that's worked and how we should carry that on into the future.
- 7:30So I think that's a really important takeaway from our show particularly.
- 7:33I must admit, Molly, you sound very calm and cool and collected for somebody
- 7:36who's assuming this is what your content manager means.
- 7:40You're responsible for deciding all the content across the two days on a massive
- 7:43event, which sees, I think about, what is it, 2,000 delegates appearing?
- 7:48Something like 150 plus exhibitors?
- 7:50Yes. Over 100 speakers? That's the one.
- 7:54Sorry, 2,500 delegates, around 150 exhibitors.
- 7:58And we're currently at about 80 speakers but obviously that
- 8:00number is going to go up as we confirm the rest of the content between
- 8:04now and the show so yeah how do you decide on content
- 8:07how does that happen it's quite a long process i'm
- 8:10fairly new to the show so so i mean
- 8:13i've taken over from my predecessor liam richardson i don't know obviously
- 8:16you guys know him quite well so i only started working on the
- 8:18show december 2023 so i'm
- 8:22very new to this process but we do quite a
- 8:24lengthy and in-depth research process so we start out by you
- 8:28know we get a six week period where we just supposed to
- 8:31read listen watch podcasts like this get in
- 8:34touch with people keep an eye on socials check governing bodies
- 8:37that sort of thing and stay as up-to-date as possible we also
- 8:40we also do a lot of research calls so we talk to people be
- 8:44that delegates be that speakers be that exhibitors from all
- 8:47different professions basically to get an idea of what
- 8:50sort of content they want delivered but also to get an idea of on
- 8:52the ground what sort of you know priorities and challenges are
- 8:55coming up and therefore you know how can we implement that in our
- 8:58program and make it as useful as possible and we
- 9:01also have our advisory board as you know Gary and Maria being a member on there
- 9:06it's sort of like a steering committee type thing where we present them with
- 9:10ideas that we've got for the show and ask them to help sort of guide the content
- 9:13and make sure we're on the right track and and suggest new ideas and new speakers
- 9:17as we go So it's sort of a continuous process as we go.
- 9:21Drawing on lots of different sources and making sure we're involving as many people as possible.
- 9:25So, yeah, it's quite a lengthy process.
- 9:29The advisory board is something that I find very exciting, not only because
- 9:33I'm on it, but just the other people on there. This is something which is still relatively new.
- 9:37Is it like the third year or something where you've had an advisory board involved
- 9:42in selecting speakers or a little longer than that? Yeah, it is well.
- 9:47It feels like about three years. I mean, that's really exciting because just
- 9:50for listeners who haven't quite understood the implications of that now,
- 9:55Now you are a conference who is actually,
- 9:57and it sounds crazy that this is a new idea, but you're listening to professionals
- 10:01from the industry and asking them who should we have along, as opposed to the
- 10:05old fashioned way of thinking, right, who can we bring in?
- 10:07Who's going to fill the seats? Who's going to hit those targets and things?
- 10:11So is it still something which helps you guys?
- 10:13I think one of the good things, Matt, with the advisory board is a lot of the
- 10:17professionals that are on there are coming from different backgrounds.
- 10:20Backgrounds so it's one way you haven't got
- 10:23everyone that's a sports therapist you haven't got everyone that's a physio we've
- 10:27got we've got different backgrounds of different people
- 10:30on the advisory board and that's great because what you
- 10:32tend to get is you get a much more open-minded session
- 10:36in terms of where you're going to go with content you
- 10:39know that's great then to help us guide the event is because we're coming from
- 10:43a different type of background with lots of different types profession and and
- 10:48i think that's only a positive for the event carrie what's it been like for
- 10:53you being on the advisory board is it something that she welcomed and thought
- 10:56this is a great idea or is it giving you just even more work to do.
- 11:02Yeah what i would say first matt is yeah
- 11:05this is the 11th therapy expo i attended one
- 11:09in manchester as a delegate one in a previous role but
- 11:12the sta has attended all the ones at at the nec there was a seismic shift during
- 11:17covid and after covid and that's when liam came on board and and and had conversations
- 11:22with a lot of people about the direction that the industry was moving because
- 11:28Because as we're all aware,
- 11:29we had a lot of time during the various lockdowns for online learning and research.
- 11:36And we prioritised really what was most important to us.
- 11:40And a lot of people decided that they were going to limit the amount of CPD they were doing.
- 11:45You know, probably not travel because of the expense, because they'd cut the working hours down.
- 11:50But, you know, Therapy Expo has remained really good value.
- 11:54You know all of our members who go this
- 11:57year will have bought the tickets last year because that's the cheapest way
- 12:00to do it so what we have to do is we have to buy
- 12:03our tickets one year then take advantage of the better deals on the day and
- 12:08booking tickets for next year but yeah the advisory board as vernon said it's
- 12:12multidisciplinary so we all get chance to to have a talk you know some of that's
- 12:17done individually with with molly and and and and the team some of it's done in a in a sort
- 12:22of a meeting format, but it's always respectful.
- 12:25It's, you know, it's good that all the professions are there.
- 12:28They're speaking to each other, they're networking with each other and we're
- 12:31communicating, whereas before we probably weren't.
- 12:35Communication, that's what it's all about. Anna Maria, you're also part of the advisory board.
- 12:39How's that been for you? If you welcome that, do you think it's great for our
- 12:42industry to have this relationship now, this close relationship with TherapyX1?
- 12:46Very much, but I also would like to give a shout out to, you know,
- 12:50Molly and Vernon, and obviously been fantastic.
- 12:53But to me, the key of this new kind of calling version of Therapy Expo goes
- 12:59also to Charlotte and Shelley.
- 13:03Actually, they have really welcomed ideas, researched them, and they made everybody feel valued.
- 13:14And they actually risked a few bits and pieces, like, for example, with their hands on up.
- 13:18But, you know, they actually really, you know, embraced a bit of being progressive
- 13:24and listened to the people that needed to be listened to.
- 13:27And I think they need to be mentioned because they were quite progressive,
- 13:34I think, with that thing.
- 13:36And I found the advisory board fantastic because it allows that broad wealth
- 13:44and breadth of content that reflects what our industry is.
- 13:52Is instead of being just physiocentric or osteocentric
- 13:57this this conference is not even interprofessional it's
- 14:00client-centric definitely it's a
- 14:03great one for anyone we've talked about imposter syndrome for a while i
- 14:06think i i love it for the same reasons you're giving because if therapists are
- 14:10worried or feel like i can't get onto there they've got something called msk
- 14:13there's gonna be physios there you go there and suddenly realize that all these
- 14:17people are human you know and you can speak proudly of what you've learned from
- 14:20what you do as long as you've got a a little bit of evidence-informed practice
- 14:23going on. Otherwise, you're going in for a shot.
- 14:25It's still a good place to go to. But yeah, you realise you're on the same page
- 14:28as these people who initially escaped.
- 14:29And that's got to be massively empowering, isn't it, for a therapist to walk
- 14:32away with that. Do you think, Anna?
- 14:34Very much indeed. And I love what Molly said when she said, actually,
- 14:39we're bringing them all together to network.
- 14:42And that is another strength of Therapy Expo, that they worked in a sense,
- 14:46you know, how do we get them together to have the best experience?
- 14:51Ends so it's not only about content which is you
- 14:54know as we all know it's really important but how do we
- 14:57make the content understood and for them to
- 14:59liaise between within each other and the
- 15:02fact that actually everybody i mean one day i was i was sitting there and hustling
- 15:07shane obviously but i was sitting there on today the speaker area and i seen
- 15:13uh finucane coming in and i looked at her and i went there i said oh my god
- 15:17i said i love the latest paper that you wrote about red flags,
- 15:21and I felt kind of like a bit of a celebrity struck.
- 15:26So you're able to actually liaise and talk and communicate with those people
- 15:30that you read the papers about, or the speakers.
- 15:32It's just an environment that
- 15:34drives communication, and through communication, knowledge is unlocked.
- 15:40Definitely that's really cool i like that that's the bit the soundbite's
- 15:43going to come out around maria thank you very much i'm going to use that at the end that's really
- 15:47nice everything in there ticks the box it's amazing but it
- 15:50is is such a healthy atmosphere you do really feel good over the two days which
- 15:55is something gary which i know you you pride yourself on because that's why
- 15:58you set up the sports therapy association no one should feel alone and it's
- 16:02something you you get feedback every year isn't it gary where people manage
- 16:05to go along and they start off alone and And then they meet other people and
- 16:08it's a massively empowering experience for them.
- 16:11Well, I think that's the whole idea, Matt. It's, you know, I started this to
- 16:15start a community, an association, a group of like-minded people working for
- 16:19the benefit of the association and all of its members.
- 16:23I like, you know, you said that we're all on the same page. I like to expand
- 16:26on that a bit, saying we're all reading the same book.
- 16:28We might all be on a different chapter.
- 16:31And sometimes those with imposter syndrome say, well, you know,
- 16:35what if I go and listen to somebody? and, you know, I haven't got a clue what they're talking about.
- 16:38Well, that's just part of your next chapter. You know, don't be afraid to go
- 16:42and listen to somebody who, you know, you think, oh, I like those,
- 16:46or you might dislike somebody, but go and listen to them anyway and see if they
- 16:49are that social media persona because a lot of people who are,
- 16:54you know, on social media have a persona that's not necessarily what they're like in person.
- 16:59So go and listen to them and be part of the community.
- 17:02Come and talk to us. i literally spend two days talking to people as you as
- 17:07you know i forgot one of my talks last year the year before just so didn't talk
- 17:12you power phones go you're supposed to be here i'll thank you very much yeah
- 17:16no definitely i'm just gonna i think it's because we've got a lot of people
- 17:19watching we're going to refresh the page just because my cams and.
- 17:22That will come back in due course you know
- 17:25just for the final product right so
- 17:28the other thing i wanted to
- 17:31mention but was imagine people
- 17:34listening to this now and thinking okay i want to go discounts oh
- 17:38it's too late about the news if it is we just have to tell them
- 17:40that is there are there still discounts happening what is
- 17:43the price people have to pay now um for
- 17:46a ticket yeah i mean
- 17:50there is still discounts there i mean the sta
- 17:53has a discount so if you're a member of
- 17:56the sta obviously take advantage of the discount that that's what i would say
- 18:00so you know that there is other ones that we offer but the sta always receives
- 18:04a discount set up by by gary and the event as itself so you know my advice would
- 18:10be take advantage of that what about for listeners Since we haven't kind of
- 18:13made that understandable,
- 18:15excellent choice of coming to the STA, I don't want to leave them out. What should they do?
- 18:19Join the STA. Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:23Absolutely. There you go. But no, I mean, we do have discounts,
- 18:26obviously, but they're not all the time. So it is a case of,
- 18:30you know, they're as and when.
- 18:31It's a case of check the website, see what's on offer, see when it is and keep checking.
- 18:37And the good thing with the website is obviously keep checking because it's
- 18:40updated quite regularly.
- 18:41So there's more contents on more exhibitors are on that's your chance to see
- 18:45what's happening at the event or maybe they can visit the st school website
- 18:50absolutely so we got a discount code as well i'm saying those seas people just
- 18:56got to hear what i'm asking and then just.
- 18:58Talking which actually nice of you to mention that anna i hear well i know you've
- 19:02got a nice little revamp happening to the st school.co.uk website starting on thursday is it,
- 19:08Yes, we do have. Oh, wait.
- 19:13Yes, we do have. And we're quite excited, actually, because we're launching
- 19:17this new website with new features, new functionalities.
- 19:21The hands-on app, which is the area for Therapy Expo, will have a space into the website.
- 19:30The website is actually an expression of the community that,
- 19:33you know, the ST School is and the Therapy Expo is and the STA is.
- 19:39But it's going to have way more functionalities much more
- 19:41user-friendly and hopefully not
- 19:44many spelling mistakes i'm still
- 19:48working my way through them there's still a few but i'm getting to them
- 19:50bit by bit yeah i must admit now that it's
- 19:53not secret information but i am kind of involved as a
- 19:56consultant with the st school that doesn't make me biased because you
- 19:59know i don't care what happens to anna in her life her business
- 20:02and her livelihood but i do take pride in the product she
- 20:05delivers but yeah very excited about that that'd be on thursday people
- 20:08so yeah there's discounts for that let's imagine someone can't
- 20:11get a discount okay they haven't got the was it
- 20:1460 quid to join the sda guy i think so like that let's imagine
- 20:17what price we're talking about let's not beat around the bush if someone has to pay
- 20:20full whack what are we talking about now vernon 299 if they're
- 20:23paying full amount right so the task for
- 20:26you guys now is how are those two days
- 20:29gonna make it worthwhile for.
- 20:32299 pounds i mean for
- 20:35me it's the earlier you obviously you look at
- 20:38it the cheaper it becomes because you've got that
- 20:41time to plan save and then you know the whole
- 20:44point of us being on the podcast today is to let people know you've
- 20:47got time to obviously to save those
- 20:50pennies but it but it's also about the types we
- 20:54hit on it before when we said about the community and networking this is
- 20:57the opportunity to meet not just
- 21:00other professionals within the industry but also
- 21:03exhibitors when you're talking to exhibitors this is
- 21:06your chance to get the nitty-gritty if you want
- 21:09if you want to buy a new product for your clinic or if you're
- 21:11looking at consumables this is your chance to also
- 21:14save you pennies in the long run you know
- 21:17this is where you can negotiate prices with some of these equipment
- 21:21providers or even of its courses resources this is
- 21:24your chance to learn and obviously to speak
- 21:26to these guys to engage look at research behind some of the products and you're
- 21:31asking the direct question to people as opposed to a website and that for me
- 21:36is great because it's that communication side if you can build that rapport
- 21:39with someone you know you know if you if you're buying a bit of equipment say
- 21:43you've got that opportunity to have a point of contact.
- 21:47That's really cool. Yeah. I mean, that's really good because it is a reminder
- 21:50for me, Therapy Expo, of the benefits of having face-to-face contact because
- 21:54we do live in an online world now.
- 21:55And when we buy something online, we trust the kind of views of things on Amazon
- 21:59or ChipAdvisor. So Therapy Expo, continuing that analogy, is the same thing.
- 22:03You can go along somewhere, but instead of looking at the reviews.
- 22:05You can actually talk to the 205 or 2,500 other delegates in and say,
- 22:10do you know about this? What do you think about it?
- 22:12You can go to the professional associations like yesterday and ask for information.
- 22:15You can go and listen to the speakers and go to the stand so it's a really healthy
- 22:18place to make important decisions rather than like you say Vernon spending too
- 22:22much money on something which you don't really know if it's going to help your business or not.
- 22:25Yeah and at the end of the day you know if you if
- 22:28you combine a bit of equipment there say I mean it doesn't have to
- 22:31be equipment but just to use that sort of terminology if
- 22:34you buy it at the event and it's cheaper in the long run
- 22:37you're saving money just from coming to that event so
- 22:40so for me I think that's really important and also some of the people that
- 22:43are on these stands are also clinicians so it's
- 22:47a chance to engage with people to find out the
- 22:49research behind why they even develop certain products you
- 22:53know these are the opportunities that arise for from going
- 22:56to therapy expo and then you've got on
- 22:59top of that you've got the interactive sessions the demo zones
- 23:02you've got the hands-on hub absolutely phenomenal features
- 23:06you know these are something that no other event as
- 23:09far as i'm aware does anything like it you know
- 23:12the fact that you can have an active session and
- 23:15you and it is quite an interactive session you know when you go and watch what
- 23:19anna's doing on there with with her team and even some of the now the speakers
- 23:23in the other demo zones these kind of features are great because it gives you
- 23:26a chance to get hands-on and there really isn't that many kinds of conferences
- 23:30or events where this happens very cool.
- 23:34Yeah, I was going to say, Gary, because, I mean, we know times are tough and
- 23:38you spend a lot of your days talking to therapists who are having problems or having issues.
- 23:41And that's one of the things you pride yourself on and listening to people and
- 23:44trying a couple of solutions.
- 23:47Can something, can events like Therapy Expo, can Therapy Expo,
- 23:51the money you spend be returned to you?
- 23:55Is it possible to turn that knowledge and those two days into a monetary reward? ward?
- 23:59Well, I mean, I'm not a financial advisor or an accountant, but I do believe
- 24:04that ongoing training is tax deductible.
- 24:06So if you've got a business, it does offset as a business expense.
- 24:09But what I would say is there is no way that you can go and be an active part of a discussion forum.
- 24:17So if you go to other conventions or expos, you can't sit in a theatre with them and have a.
- 24:28Experts. You know, if you go into one of the main theatres, it's a presentation
- 24:33with a couple of minutes of Q&A at the end.
- 24:36What we do with the STA theatre is we have our Women in Sports Therapy panel,
- 24:40which was greatly received last year, and we're going to do that again,
- 24:43where the audience was not, you know, completely females, but it was female-specific
- 24:49questions that were asked.
- 24:50It's a safe space to go and ask questions, to be part of it, to be heard.
- 24:55Make me accountable. If you're paying £60 for your membership fee,
- 24:59come and challenge me to see what we're doing with your money,
- 25:02you know, for your benefit, for the wider profession benefit.
- 25:07Now, my question has always been, where are all of the other professional associations
- 25:12that represent the wider industry?
- 25:14Why aren't they there? The Sports Massage Association in Vaughan went last year,
- 25:18I believe the year before as well. And it's nice to see people there.
- 25:22You know, people think that we're all rivals. We're not. You know,
- 25:25we're colleagues within the industry.
- 25:26We talk, you know, we communicate together and we're all working for the good of the industry.
- 25:32So any other professional associations, if you're a member of one,
- 25:35challenge them. Why aren't they at the events like these?
- 25:39Great points. Molly, I mean, you're sitting there and hopefully you're hearing
- 25:44things which are kind of pleasing to the ear, like it's a safe place.
- 25:48It's a healthy environment.
- 25:50It's a place you can get educated.
- 25:53Is this all kind of music to you? Is this exactly what as content manager you're
- 25:57hoping people take from the event?
- 25:59Yeah, I think so. And I think like we just talked about, obviously,
- 26:02on the back end of the content production, you can see the collaboration that goes into it.
- 26:06But what's really nice is when people come along and they hear these sessions
- 26:09and they go to these more interactive theatres you sort of see the collaboration
- 26:12as a result of that as well
- 26:14which is quite a nice full circle moment but it also means that
- 26:17you know like very much like Vernon said
- 26:20we you know we've got the main theatres where they're you know more theoretical they're
- 26:23more presentation style but we've also got the STA and
- 26:26the hands-on hub where you can go along and you can be you know
- 26:29you can talk to these speakers directly and you can hear the research and hear
- 26:32what they're doing you know as up to date as it will ever be and then and then
- 26:36ask them questions there and then on site you know they they are they are people
- 26:40too so it's really nice to be able to bring the speakers and and our delegates
- 26:45together and sort of show,
- 26:47they're really you know they're really not that different there's a lot to be
- 26:51shared and that's what we should be doing that's great and i think that's one
- 26:55of the i mean i asked gary that question And I think what I'd like listeners
- 26:59to realize is monetary reward does come from empowerment.
- 27:04If you walk away after two days thinking, you know what, I'm pretty good at what I do.
- 27:09I'm not so scared of these other professions. I can work with these other professions.
- 27:12I'm going to have a phone call to that physio who I was always scared of and
- 27:15go, you know what, I'm on the same chapter as you.
- 27:17And I went to Therapy Expo and they thought maybe that my services could fit in.
- 27:21Bam, you start that will. you're not doing the same thing over and over again
- 27:24and not getting any more award of it, which is kind of the definition of insanity, isn't it?
- 27:27You get a therapy expert, hopefully you come out with something to change.
- 27:31You're going to do something different. You're going to open up avenues.
- 27:34But I think a lot of that comes from the confidence to make the change.
- 27:37And Maria, you're nodding in agreement, yeah?
- 27:39No, no, no, that is stronger because how can you, it's priceless.
- 27:45What you exactly said is what I was going to say. It is the networking,
- 27:49it is absolutely priceless because actually networking is not only.
- 27:53Communicating, collaborating with people like you
- 27:57but actually you've been exposed to people
- 28:00in one man band type of practices which
- 28:04in our profession as soft tissue therapists or post therapists we usually are
- 28:08so very isolated and all of a sudden you are in the same place with all of them
- 28:14and for me the most important that some of those people like you Two,
- 28:19they're actually speaking.
- 28:22And this is why the hands-on app, we have a very good balance of people that
- 28:26are well-known in the circuit,
- 28:29but also very good clinicians that we got so much to learn from,
- 28:35but they never had the opportunity to be there.
- 28:38And to me, a therapist there, a massage therapist, look at me and just say,
- 28:42oh, my God, she's like me. If she can do it, I can do it.
- 28:45That is priceless. You know, you go away and the fire has been reignited even further.
- 28:50That secondly talking about money because for me
- 28:53that is a really quite important oh 300 pounds
- 28:56is a lot of money so we have to look the
- 29:01value we take out of that 300 pounds and the value is the fact that don't think
- 29:07about just going away with extra strategies because that's what it's not what
- 29:11it's all about is the fact that you are exposed to possibly talks people and topics you would not
- 29:20necessarily be exposed to if you go to one course.
- 29:24That, because us as content creators, what we do, we try to challenge a little
- 29:29bit and go a little bit more forward and forward and forward.
- 29:32So people will be exposed to things that they might not necessarily see for a long time.
- 29:40So they're already, we're going to, you know, hopefully we're going to make
- 29:43them way ahead of their colleagues that they don't come to Therapy Expo.
- 29:49And then once you expose yourself to all of that, you say, actually,
- 29:52I want to know a little bit more about that. So I'm going to go and go to that course.
- 29:57So you know already who you're going to go to.
- 30:00And, you know, hopefully you made the right choice and you're not wasting the
- 30:03money for it. So you're saving it in something.
- 30:06But also, actually, it's the value on the up-to-date knowledge.
- 30:11That's why we are there and working hard behind the scenes to make sure that
- 30:15the knowledge is up-to-date and we're always pushing there. But ultimately,
- 30:19it's that being together that, you know, we become a model of each other.
- 30:27Hey there matt phillips here sorry to interrupt the
- 30:30podcast just 60 seconds to remind you that if you're looking for beard grooming
- 30:34products there is a sports therapy association discount code that will get you

- 31:27Doesn't include already discounted bundles.
- 31:32Matt, can I just ask Vern, what is the cheapest possible price that somebody
- 31:37can attend Therapy Expo for?
- 31:39So if they are hypothesising now that they pay £299 this year and they book
- 31:44a ticket in advance for next year,
- 31:46are the prices already set for the early early early bird prices
- 31:49so how much can they you know could they get in for 100
- 31:52quid next year and look at it as actually it's cost
- 31:55me 200 pounds so what normally happens is
- 31:57they would do that at the event so at the event you can book for the following
- 32:01year so and that's obviously the cheapest way to do it but because you're you're
- 32:06you're basically paying for that following year so you can do that that's not
- 32:09that's not a problem to do that at the event and we actually have a delegate
- 32:13section there where people can actually go and do that.
- 32:17So there's a lot of options so you can go there so i get what gary's
- 32:19saying you're saying that if you can't get discount this year
- 32:22go there but remember that by going this year
- 32:25you'll have the opportunity to pay 100 quid or something for the year
- 32:28after the following year and then you divide it up you're thinking okay actually i'm
- 32:31paying half of 200 pounds for
- 32:34two years so yeah that's clever i like that money saving wonderful
- 32:37the other thing just go on before what
- 32:41anna maria was saying there you know if you look at the speakers and
- 32:44educators because that's that's that's basically
- 32:47what we are and i'm going to refer to something that
- 32:50one of my mentors once taught me and this was going back to cricket coaching
- 32:53days he said to me that knowledge is powerful but only when it's shared there's
- 32:59no point as an educator having lots of knowledge and not sharing with anybody
- 33:03so you go and look how motivated the speakers are how freely they They share their knowledge.
- 33:10And some of them are commercially driven. Some of them are not commercially
- 33:13driven. You know, they are there because they are passionate about sharing knowledge.
- 33:17And that's what interests me mainly about Therapy Expo.
- 33:22Yeah, that is very true. That is the quality of the speakers.
- 33:24What we'll be doing, obviously, on the STA podcast between now,
- 33:28not every single session, but between now and 99 days leading up to Therapy
- 33:31Expo, we will be introducing the speakers we've got to give you an idea.
- 33:36But yeah the common theme is a lot of the speakers thanks to the advisory board.
- 33:40You know they're making a living obviously you wouldn't do it otherwise but
- 33:43they are givers i mean there is a lot of
- 33:46altruism going on there in fact there's a couple of speakers
- 33:49even listening to us tonight shows us how we're all on the same chapter
- 33:52we are joined by let's have a little look through i'm definitely so well
- 33:54there's martin to start off uh martin nicolai
- 33:58arnold for some christensen how's that pronunciation um who
- 34:01says i'm there mainly to make sure nobody learns anything from anastan let's
- 34:05not bring that that is what i get
- 34:08from my colleagues in the english let's bring up his other
- 34:10comments sherry networking is the result of meeting the humans
- 34:13behind the word and understanding just that they're humans which is
- 34:17very nice because martin who some of you might know from the
- 34:20friday friday physio confession podcast he's going
- 34:23to be speaking on day two i believe i remember
- 34:26from my brain yeah day two therapy expo in
- 34:29theater c 125 practical professionalism the paradox
- 34:33of being human within a health care system so that's a
- 34:35nice example of what we're talking about now and it's not all about buy this
- 34:39do this we're talking about being human how that's going to affect you as a
- 34:44therapist the interaction with your client or patient who's human as well and
- 34:48how that's where the skills probably are going to be not so much what you're
- 34:51doing it's about understanding what it is to be human and that sort of stuff and matt is going to do a.
- 34:55Practical version of that talk at the hands-on app on the one so it's going
- 35:01to actually do some awfully unless we fall out beforehand do some strategies
- 35:08for the hands-on app as i say you know.
- 35:12Us and the vikings will uh we'll sort it very nice and you've sorted him somewhere
- 35:18to sleep i believe for the night which is nice because he just no not yet after
- 35:21what he said no apparently No, he is one of these.
- 35:24He's Northern European, isn't he? He just kind of comes over with his log or
- 35:27whatever and just thinks he's going to ride out somewhere.
- 35:29And he's spurting. Yeah, but we'll find him somewhere, I'm sure.
- 35:33Anyway, so yeah, and also a shout out to Tristan Attenborough,
- 35:36who has proved very popular speaker in the last couple, I think two or even
- 35:40three years ago, I think Tristan was speaking.
- 35:42Tristan's listening to us tonight in the audience, and Tristan's going to be on day one at 9.35.
- 35:48Dysfunction, vaguely specific or specifically vague. And Tristan,
- 35:51for me, is a lovely example of listening to somebody who can challenge traditional
- 35:58things which you might have learned.
- 35:59But when you see him face to face and as a person, he does it in a wonderfully
- 36:03calm way, which makes you reflect without kind of getting all your feathers
- 36:07in your back kind of put up.
- 36:08And not so much on social media, but that's difficult, social media.
- 36:11But Tristan is somebody I would recommend you go and see in person at Therapy
- 36:16Expo just to realise that he's really not like the person he comes across as on social media.
- 36:20Go shake his hand, give him a hug. I mean, look, how can he look at this comment here from Tristan?
- 36:24Here we go. Look, Tristan says, I'm putting it on the screen for those of you.
- 36:28I love hugging all the people i see once a year and they
- 36:31were always the best the best shirts of the
- 36:34whole yeah definitely without a doubt yeah he's definitely
- 36:36got flair yeah yeah just so anyway a
- 36:39couple of speakers here and i'm just saying that because again i
- 36:42think it's really useful to therapists to realize that you are going to see
- 36:45speakers who are not going to just stand on the podium and not and just
- 36:48speak down to you it's such they're part of the community as
- 36:50well for them it's a learning experience for them they're meeting other speakers
- 36:53who maybe they haven't met they've read research papers from and that's one
- 36:57of the wonderful things for me i love bringing speakers together in the STA
- 36:59theatre who maybe not have met each other and then suddenly they're talking
- 37:02having a coffee and I'm just sitting back thinking oh matchmaker matchmaker
- 37:05lovely I'm glad I did that so yeah very exciting um questions people I'm just
- 37:09checking oh here we go it's a question from Charlotte S thank you Charlotte
- 37:13says is there an early bird ticket price for anyone who books their ticket now.
- 37:17Yes yes so it's correct me if
- 37:20i'm wrong burn but i think we're at 150 plus vat at
- 37:23the moment if you book before monday the 30th of september
- 37:26oh jeez that's a problem shell we were saying 299 but
- 37:29actually yeah so currently 150 pounds if
- 37:33you book before bank holiday do it
- 37:36do it do it do it do
- 37:38it and i can't sing that song yes do it do it now do it good wonderful
- 37:43let's see uh nicola smith has said interesting to
- 37:46hear the science that goes on behind the scenes i don't know
- 37:49what goes on behind the scenes yeah it's not all science but yep there's so
- 37:52much that goes on behind the scenes honestly it starts with therapy experience doesn't
- 37:55it yes okay right next year what you do there's a meeting i think we are polite
- 38:00with each other for the first week we don't talk to each other and then we start
- 38:04only meeting okay next year oh we got another speaker andrew mccauley is here
- 38:09as well from procast sports medicine who's again one of i mean for For me personally,
- 38:13I keep saying this like I've got some man crushing me. I haven't.
- 38:16He's too short for me. I'm six foot six.
- 38:18But Andrew was one of the people who I'd heard of but never met in person.
- 38:22I went to see him speak. In fact, he came along to the STA Theatre to speak. And brilliant.
- 38:27It was for me that was like, right, that's my speaker for Therapy Expo.
- 38:31So, yeah, Andrew from Procast Sports Medicine is going to be discussing why
- 38:35most patients are Italian when it comes to exercise prescription,
- 38:40both on stage and in the STA Theatre. So that's going to be a great one.
- 38:44It's going to be great. I really recommend that. I recommend so many of them.
- 38:47But as I say, Andrew will be on the STA podcast in the lead up,
- 38:51talking a little bit about that.
- 38:52So you'll be able to get to know all of our speakers over the next 99 days.
- 38:57One thing I did want to mention just on behalf of the STA Update Theatre,
- 39:01obviously I host, but this year what we're trying to do or what we've decided to do is –.
- 39:08Feedback has been that they love like we talked about before
- 39:11they love the intimacy of an open end theater the same as in the hands-on hub
- 39:14people really dig having that chance to
- 39:17sit down two meters from the speaker who's sitting at the same level of them
- 39:21discuss things throw questions and it's very it's such a nice way to learn as
- 39:25well being in a theater it's kind of a little bit kind of harry potter isn't
- 39:29it you're kind of sitting back there with 100 students listening and you don't
- 39:32take that much in it's the little open air theaters outside where i think really Really,
- 39:37that's where you can reflect, mix with other people and listen.
- 39:40So the STA Theatre this year will be very much Q&A session orientated,
- 39:45often with people who have been speaking in Theatre A, B or C.
- 39:48And they'll be, I've tried to organise it so that they will have already been
- 39:52giving their in-theatre presentation.
- 39:55And then an hour or two later on, there'll be an opportunity to see them in
- 39:59the STA Theatre for a chance to either catch them if you missed it,
- 40:03because not everybody can get into the big theatres or otherwise just hear about
- 40:07what they were talking about and be able to ask questions to them.
- 40:11So you can't really see the screenshot on the page here. It's a bit small,
- 40:15but the programme is being filled up wonderfully.
- 40:18If you go to therapyexpo.co.uk, you can already see there's so many columns.
- 40:22That's just a fraction of the, that's like the first hour or something.
- 40:25You can already see and start planning. So again, if you're one of these people
- 40:28thinking, I'm not quite sure if I want to go along to it, don't make any decisions
- 40:30before you see the sort of content that's on there. It will surprise you,
- 40:33definitely surprise you, some amazing content on there.
- 40:37Matt, can I just add then that a third layer possibly to that is you've seen
- 40:42somebody in one of the main theatres, you've listened to their presentation.
- 40:45A couple of hours later, you can see them in one of the open theatres having
- 40:49a discussion with 30 or 40 people.
- 40:53And then all of the speakers are going
- 40:55to be in the STA meter speaker lounge so you can
- 40:58have one-to-one questionings because what tends to happen is
- 41:01we get one speaker stands to the side of the lectern and
- 41:04a few people asking questions the next speaker
- 41:07is ready to go on so we've set aside a space this year
- 41:10for meet the speakers where it'll be a really informal area
- 41:13that's where I'll be based and all of the speakers are
- 41:16going to do half an hour or so in the
- 41:19theatre in the meet the speaker area after they've done
- 41:22their presentation fantastic yeah that'd be great as well as long as they meet
- 41:27the speaker who is free from any possible luggage or we're gonna have our own
- 41:37storage space have have you got that.
- 41:44I've got barbed wire fencing going up it will be fantastic that's great news that's very good,
- 41:50um charlotte s has said here hands-on hub and sda theater absolutely rammed
- 41:54last year can't wait to see what's in store this time are there any new features
- 41:57to look out at 30x this year that's a really good question charlotte and it
- 42:01was it was totally rammed let me just bring up a few pictures here i've got
- 42:04of photos from last year because it will give people an idea of,
- 42:09what we're talking about if i put that on here.
- 42:14Not able to blow that up. This is the hands-on hub, which is kind of normally,
- 42:19I think it will be this year, kind of next to the STA update theatre in the STA stand.
- 42:23A fantastic place, which Anna's
- 42:25already kind of mentioned, it's devised to turn theory into practice.
- 42:28But you can see from the photos, if you listen to the podcast,
- 42:30then go along to YouTube now and just have a look at the photos that are coming up.
- 42:33But it's a fantastic place for practical application, for asking questions,
- 42:37for getting up, practicing things.
- 42:39And I'll definitely recommend you have a look at some of the stuff that's going on in there.
- 42:42And as you can see what a lovely photo there you see that the st school in your
- 42:47photo instagram everything's catered for from anne maria who's definitely down with the kids.
- 42:52And yeah like you say people were ramming it that was
- 42:55the shell lions one of the most classic but yes oh
- 42:58smart not because there was very different
- 43:02or you know talks it's because we
- 43:05we we created a space where we
- 43:08shown people what being an evidence-based practitioner
- 43:11practitioner means in clinical practice because we all go to those amazing conferences
- 43:16we all hear so much but then when we are by ourself in our individual clinic
- 43:22rooms what does that mean in clinical practice how what does that mean you know
- 43:27working within an evidence-informed.
- 43:30Approach for shoulder treatment and what we created is it's not only hands-on
- 43:36in terms of So massage and movement, it's actually interactive and translation of what evidence is.
- 43:43And this year we're bringing in quite a lot about, you know,
- 43:46individual professionalism with Martin, with Joe Turner.
- 43:52We're going to be talking about ADHD and neurodiversity, sensory integration.
- 43:58So there are going to be quite a variety of all these topics.
- 44:04Topics but what does he actually means practically for
- 44:07us that's great i love that passion in yours
- 44:10and we've talked about this of how can we best translate what
- 44:14people hear at therapy expo into something they're going
- 44:16to take home with and be able to use and that is as educators that's always
- 44:19the challenge isn't it whether it's a class um or one person is
- 44:22how can you get through to that person and help them resolve the information
- 44:25yeah great did you just say joe turner's coming yes of course is she really
- 44:30oh yeah yeah so wait because our our full agenda i think is gonna go up very
- 44:37soon with the the page and everything so we're gonna,
- 44:43full agenda but expect some really interesting talks apart from martin.
- 44:51From norway sorry i didn't know where you're from martin of
- 44:53course it's norway of course it's norway i think the other one matt is
- 44:56we've also got new features as well yes this is what i wanted to
- 44:59go on to yeah because so what we got so what
- 45:02we've got now i mean part of that came from obviously listening to
- 45:05to some of the conversation on the podcast early on was we've
- 45:09also now got a new feature area which is around business advice
- 45:12so we've got now if somebody wants
- 45:15to go there and they're looking for insurance or if they're looking at marketing
- 45:18or we've now got an area now which is almost
- 45:20a business pavilion where people can go and
- 45:23meet those experts and obviously speak to them about what what
- 45:26they do what they might need you know it might be not
- 45:29everyone's familiar with the best card machines or you know
- 45:32it could be these kind of things are great things to have
- 45:35for up-and-coming people that have just passed their qualification they're
- 45:38looking at being a new clinician you know to
- 45:41have these kind of things which which is great to see
- 45:44and that comes from obviously the conversations we've had
- 45:47before and Gary we've had conversations about business advice and these kind
- 45:52of things now is brought to the show so that that's another great feature and
- 45:57then we've got other features as well which is like the AccuCenter you know
- 46:00and that's kind of been overlooked but in the past obviously now we've got so
- 46:04many professions that are using acupuncture or dry needling.
- 46:07Now we've got a featured area purely for that as well.
- 46:10So we are kind of looking at what different types of practitioner are using
- 46:14and bringing that to the show.
- 46:16And then we're looking at the implementation of taking the growth of where can it go to.
- 46:21So what might be the latest technology used within acupuncture?
- 46:25You know, what might be the latest technique? And then we'll bring in the governing
- 46:29bodies around that as well.
- 46:31And it's kind of, we've got these designated areas, which are great for clinicians
- 46:35because it gives them a new experience.
- 46:37That's great to hear. Molly, is there anything else? What are you excited?
- 46:40I mean, there's lots of new features at 3PX this year. What else do you think we should talk about?
- 46:44I think, I mean, it's not sort of like a physical feature as such,
- 46:48but I think in terms of building the programme this year, we've done a sort
- 46:51of different structure to it.
- 46:53So we focused a lot on sort of content streams and throughout my research and
- 46:56with the guidance of the advisory board, we sort of collated all the content
- 47:00into streams so that it would be a lot easier for people to sort of go along to the show with,
- 47:05you know, this is what I want to know about and these are the sessions that apply to me.
- 47:08And, you know, each, you know, each session doesn't necessarily just fit into one stream.
- 47:12There's crossovers, there's all sorts, but it's something that,
- 47:14like we were talking about earlier, you know, there's a whole stream on ethics
- 47:17and professionalism, which is why Martin's talking.
- 47:20But it's that sort of thing where, you know, you can follow the stream throughout
- 47:24the programme and it is done in such a way that you could, you know,
- 47:27in theory, just go to all the ethics and professionalism sessions because they're
- 47:30staggered in such a way, that sort of thing.
- 47:33So I'm really excited about sort of how that's going going to look and the
- 47:35feedback we might get from that just in terms of people planning out their
- 47:38day um I think one of the other streams I'm really excited for
- 47:41that we've pushed a bit more this year is professional sports obviously you
- 47:44know post-olympic hype and everything going on there it's something
- 47:47we're really excited about and obviously we've got headline speaker Mitchell Hooper
- 47:51coming along who again is is just a human being and
- 47:54will be on the show floor to talk to people so we're really
- 47:56really excited about that and and on and everything that's
- 47:59that's going on with that and there's no molly can
- 48:02i can i ask have you we spoke
- 48:06last year about a search facility on the
- 48:08website so if somebody wants to see dr chris
- 48:11norris for example will he be able to type it into the search bar and find out
- 48:15where he's speaking what time and what theater um i don't believe you can specifically
- 48:20search by name but you can search by stream that i've just mentioned so if you
- 48:24sort of go in the drop down box on the left hand side you can search by stream
- 48:28and i I think there's seven, eight streams,
- 48:30and each session will be tagged with whichever stream it relates to.
- 48:34So you can search by that. So, for example, if you knew Chris Norris was talking
- 48:37in the massage and manual therapy stream, you'd sort of filter by that and see
- 48:41his sessions come up. Good, thank you.
- 48:43Let's not forget also the MSK conference, which is housed within Therapy Expo.
- 48:50Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Amanda and team, they've opened it up so
- 48:54that people can move around between some talks of that conference and Therapy
- 48:58Expo. Am I right? That's correct, yeah.
- 49:00Yes, because again, this year the title is, or the theme is... Inequalities.
- 49:07Inequalities, yes. Yeah, bridging the gap. Bridging the gap.
- 49:10And again, Amanda, she's another great educator and clinician that wants to
- 49:16see that really strong collaboration.
- 49:19And she worked really, really hard with that. So let's give it a shout out, I think.
- 49:25That's great. That's really significant as well, isn't it? That shows,
- 49:28because sometimes it is a struggle, isn't it, being an educator?
- 49:30And every time you think you've taken a step forwards, it's kind of,
- 49:33you read something on normally social media and it's three steps back.
- 49:36But when you think now we've got a major conference where the MSK is open,
- 49:41physios have opened their doors to sports therapists. What the hell's going on?
- 49:45That's what it's all about, isn't it? I think what happened,
- 49:49Matt, if you remember for the last two years, we collate feedback and some of
- 49:52the feedback that we were getting were, I can't believe the quality of the content
- 49:56in a sports therapy theatre.
- 49:58That's why they've opened their doors. It's not letting us in.
- 50:01They want to see what we do. Yeah, absolutely.
- 50:04I was going to say the same. I was going to say the same, though,
- 50:07because last year we did the panel with Amanda.
- 50:11Literally, it was a last-minute thing. It's like, Amanda, sit down.
- 50:14It was me, me, Sarah, Amanda.
- 50:18And actually, it really opened up how she wasn't aware of our standards,
- 50:26our views, our approach to care.
- 50:29Several times we have to actually, you know, kind of correct her because of
- 50:34those very old views around massage therapy.
- 50:37But at the same time, you know, for a lot of people, they may realize what physiotherapy is,
- 50:45so where they're coming from and how can you do that unless you are in an open conference
- 50:52and and progressive conference like therapy x
- 50:55well that was wonderful you know because yeah it was
- 50:57amazing that's cool that could be really significant i
- 51:00think that's gonna be one of the things i'm gonna notice and take away from
- 51:03this year i'm very excited by that just that multi-disciplinary approach
- 51:07actually happening i mean the dream of putting something from
- 51:09theory into actual practice i think that's really cool i think
- 51:12maybe it'd be that there'll be an episode there for martin on the friday
- 51:15physio confession podcast he could do something like i used to think
- 51:18non-aligned head depressions was shit or something and then he could confess
- 51:21that being a physio obviously went through his mind but now he can realize actually
- 51:25there's some good stuff going on there so there you go there's a little podcast
- 51:28session for you martin post therapy expo you can use that title if you want
- 51:32wonderful where are we it's 8 56 so we've talked about accessibility.
- 51:37We've talked we kind of talked about how now is the time to start booking when
- 51:41things like accommodation is is not everyone can go for two days if you can
- 51:46i think that's another time another Another reason for looking now is that accommodation
- 51:50is not just cheaper now, it's just available now.
- 51:53Yeah, I would look as early as possible for things like accommodation and don't
- 51:57rule out things like Airbnbs, you know.
- 51:59But the thing that I always think about is check the conference programme.
- 52:05Look at what day, if you can only go for one day, look at what's on and when.
- 52:10You know, and at least then you're always going to get something from that event.
- 52:14But that conference program is kind of like worth its weight in gold.
- 52:19It's a bit something that I would be definitely looking constantly and even
- 52:23right up to the event in case anything changes.
- 52:26Just have a look and see what time people are on and where and what's the best
- 52:29route to get to it, you know, and maximize your time that you can be at the
- 52:33actual event itself because there is so much to see and do.
- 52:37You don't want to be overwhelmed, shall we say. so
- 52:40as long as you've already made a plan of what you want to go
- 52:43and see and when you can do it that's always
- 52:46something that i would try and follow great advice
- 52:49what i would say what i would say about accommodation matt
- 52:52is don't be you know if you're traveling by car book your parking in advance
- 52:57because it's cheaper and then look for accommodation that's about 20 minutes
- 53:02outside of the nec if you try and book in the nec it's astronomically priced
- 53:06so we we've got Got an Airbnb just at the back of the runway,
- 53:09if you remember the aviation fuel from 5 a.m. in the morning.
- 53:12But we're back in there this year after last year's escapade.
- 53:16But yeah, don't be afraid to look in places like Solihull and Coventry just outside.
- 53:21It's 20 minutes travel, but you're halving the price.
- 53:25And maybe even if you are part of a particularly supported professional association,
- 53:29don't do it all by yourself.
- 53:31You know, start a post in your association, whether you're in the Hands-On Hub,
- 53:34whether you're in the STA, wherever you are.
- 53:36Just say, look, guys, if there's five of us going and looking for accommodation,
- 53:39why don't we do an Airbnb?
- 53:40Airbnb, if you book now, could be shockingly amazing.
- 53:44Not always. I woke up to a few things down the side of my bed that I don't even think of ever again.
- 53:48But if you do find a good place and it's cheap, you know, you get a palace for five of you.
- 53:53So yeah it's the only experience of sitting around ordering
- 53:56your wagamama or whatever else that you
- 53:59know any other brand but me and sarah quite like our wagamama
- 54:02few glasses of wine no bottle sorry few glasses
- 54:05of wine we see what we learned
- 54:10what we heard what we want to go and see that
- 54:13is invaluable that is but this is
- 54:16where knowledge is unlocked only listening you
- 54:20don't learn you learn by evaluating and by
- 54:23discussing it by which again sorry i
- 54:27sounds terrible but when you come in pop into
- 54:30the hands-on app and you can pick up our cpd
- 54:33booklet where we created a
- 54:36cpd reflective journal that follows
- 54:39one of the accepted reflective processes where
- 54:45you can actually note down some of the
- 54:48feelings or like some of the evaluation which actually
- 54:51you can then use it as evidence for your
- 54:54cpd journal i like to you know
- 54:57which talks to to choose apart from the hands-on app obviously but i just want
- 55:03to if you don't mind read the the the quote from fannyman that we have put on
- 55:07our cpd journal they says there is no learning without having to pose a question
- 55:12and the question requires doubt.
- 55:15So if I would say, you know, one of the things to start doing now,
- 55:19oh my God, the picture of me, one of the things that you start doing now is thinking.
- 55:24What do I not know? What is it that I am missing?
- 55:29What is it that my client, not only about you, what is it that my clients could
- 55:34be benefiting from? What are those type of injuries?
- 55:38And then build it out of what, once we realize what we do not know,
- 55:43that's where we're then seeking new knowledge.
- 55:46And then obviously you can get all of that from the hands-on episode.
- 55:48You know, apart from Matt. From the SJ Theatre.
- 55:52From the SJ Theatre, sorry. remember the ladder by the way i forget just just
- 55:56in case now everybody knows garen is to remember the ladder okay remember i
- 56:01take it every year anna because i i'm not vertically challenged i could reach
- 56:06that i thank you for your benefit i'm just i'm just.
- 56:13I'm just working out a marketing invoice for the
- 56:15sts st school because you've got 17 minutes of
- 56:18presents on my podcast it's true yeah we'll get out and get much
- 56:23better very exciting very exciting so
- 56:27there we go people nine o'clock i think we have
- 56:29hopefully the intention of this episode was to
- 56:32give advice on any barriers you think
- 56:35you're feeling why you can't go obviously we all
- 56:38love the two days and we're i don't know we could there's nothing really at
- 56:43the moment bad to say about it and you can listen to previous shows it is a
- 56:47fantastic opportunity for the reason we've listed but we do understand in today's
- 56:51times in particular it's tough and even the 150 pounds which.
- 56:56We'll make sure it goes into the show notes. If you get that before Monday bank
- 56:59holiday, then just have a think.
- 57:02Can we just confirm that date? Because Molly did say the 30th of September.
- 57:06Yes, the Monday, the 30th of September. So not the coming bank holiday at the
- 57:10end. Okay, that's great.
- 57:11So, okay, so actually we're talking now. If you listen to this podcast,
- 57:14I'll get it uploaded as soon as I can.
- 57:15You are looking at a realistic price of £150 for two days, plus accommodation and that.
- 57:20But hopefully we've given you advice on looking for accommodation,
- 57:24recommendations sorting out travel where to park and things like that and
- 57:27and talking to other people don't do it by yourself don't you
- 57:30know try to just this is where a professional association
- 57:33or like a group like hands on hub on facebook
- 57:36or whatever it is master support group talk to other people and communicate
- 57:39and you can turn something which seems like impossible into
- 57:42reality and and i can't promise you will
- 57:45benefit from it but i tell you what it will definitely be
- 57:48a an eye-opening experience for you um and
- 57:51also the other thing which we reiterate over the years is if
- 57:53you do arrive there by yourself then go along
- 57:57to the hands-on hub or go along to the sta update theater because now
- 58:00you know the voices and if you go to youtube you'll see the faces they're not
- 58:03too scary actually me and gary can be quite scary and jake as well we
- 58:05are all over six foot six so maybe start off with the hands-on hub because then
- 58:09you won't feel intimidated and then work your way over to the sta theater once
- 58:13you've got a little bit more confidence and just prepare to lift your head up
- 58:17another couple of people but what I'm saying is in a long-winded way is we're
- 58:20all there to support you as are the staff there everybody there are really friendly it's a therapist.
- 58:27Conference for sure definitely Mark for just for diversity tick boxing we are
- 58:32having some short stuff on the SGA stand this year are we really,
- 58:36yeah yeah I thought that quote was covered by over the road for me Scott oh
- 58:41Scott okay that's fine yeah,
- 58:44just say quick hello to me who's in the audience.
- 58:47Hi, Shelley. We must catch up with yourself and Charlotte.
- 58:50And Emmy has admitted to procuring a ladder last year on your behalf.
- 58:55Anna Maria. Fantastic. Thanks for joining us, Shelley. Yes, Shelley Williams
- 58:59says, Charlotte, my team, and I can't see the other names. Hidden.
- 59:03Charlotte, myself and my team are looking forward to welcoming you all to the
- 59:06Expo this year. And Anna Maria, love your hair. Thank you.
- 59:10Fantastic. Thanks, Shirley. Thanks for joining us. So, yeah, there you go, people.
- 59:13If you've got any questions, then go to YouTube and leave them in the comments there.
- 59:17I want the reason we kind of sing and dance more about YouTube than Facebook
- 59:20is YouTube stays there for longer and the comments are there. It comes up in Google.
- 59:24So if you've got any questions, stick them in the YouTube comments.
- 59:26I guarantee we will get back to you and other people might chime in as well.
- 59:30So let's use YouTube as like of the hub, not to take, steal that from you,
- 59:35Anna, but the hub for questions for Therapy Expo.
- 59:39Or like I say, go to one of the very popular Facebook groups like Hands on Hub
- 59:42or STA or something like that and ask them there.
- 59:46Well, that was very enjoyable. I'm looking forward to listening to it back to
- 59:49this myself. Anything else I've missed out or Molly or Vernon,
- 59:51anything else you'd like to add?
- 59:53I think the other one, the only thing I'd mention would be the poster zone.
- 59:56I think, Anna, you're quite in with what we do there. So, I mean,
- 1:00:00that would be a good one if you wanted to just explain that quickly,
- 1:00:03because I know you've had quite a big part.
- 1:00:05So the Post-it Zone is live. So if there is any of you that wants to present
- 1:00:12from cases to a paper that you're writing or a study that you're doing,
- 1:00:20if you're doing your bachelor's or even just a case study,
- 1:00:24if you have something interesting, do go on to the Therapy Expo Post-it Zone.
- 1:00:29The amazing protocols written down.
- 1:00:34Everybody can do it. You don't have to be an academic.
- 1:00:37You don't have to be, you have to be a clinician. You just have to be a therapist.
- 1:00:41And it's all very, very well explained. And if anybody's interested,
- 1:00:45please contact me and I can explain better.
- 1:00:50We're going to be presenting actually a couple of papers out of one recent study
- 1:00:55and something else. So more people.
- 1:00:59More clinicians in vocational training present cases and stronger our presence
- 1:01:11within the table of other professionals will be.
- 1:01:17Do not think that only university educated practitioners can present posters or do research.
- 1:01:25Search wonderfully inclusive fantastic right we're
- 1:01:29going to roll this up thank you for everybody who joined us live
- 1:01:33in the live lounge i've just bring
- 1:01:36up a couple nikki mansfield thank you for joining us nikki nikki says that's
- 1:01:39been thing he's clever i've been going since 2016 and what i've wanted from
- 1:01:42the expo has changed each year over that time considering the biggest challenges
- 1:01:45how to manage my time stream sounds super helpful very cool and nikki being
- 1:01:50from that neck in the woods says accommodation is way cheaper in Coventry than in Broome.
- 1:01:54Handy hint from a Covlas, especially considering the NEC isn't actually in Broome.
- 1:01:58It's halfway between Cov and Broome. There you go. So yeah, advice there.
- 1:02:01Sarah Jones says, I'm banking on Waggers again this year. Thank you, Sarah, for adding that.
- 1:02:07But like we say, other fast food outlets. Can I say that the hands-on app will
- 1:02:11not exist unless Sarah will be there because they're the only one who's keeping
- 1:02:16the hands-on app going and me alive, to be honest.
- 1:02:21Matt it's true there's some wonderful people there,
- 1:02:24The two things I'm looking forward to this year the most now is meeting Martin.
- 1:02:29I feel he's a kindred spirit. That's a common thing.
- 1:02:32Yeah. And I'm looking forward to seeing how much furniture Anna Maria is taking.
- 1:02:38That's always, yeah. Because with Amanda, we are planning a little bit of a fire pit.
- 1:02:44And so, yeah. Fire pit. How wonderful.
- 1:02:50Excellent. Right, people. Thanks so much for joining us. if you
- 1:02:53listen to the podcast then thank you very much as always it's doing
- 1:02:56wonderfully healthily but tonight's question really
- 1:02:59is yes we get like two two and a half thousand downloads but how
- 1:03:02many of you actually go to therapy expo so we'd love to have some feedback maybe
- 1:03:06if this episode has enticed you to actually go
- 1:03:08into therapy expo then drop us an email or something or put it on a
- 1:03:11social media post and say that you're going because of the
- 1:03:14episode you heard on the sports therapy association podcast because that's why we do
- 1:03:16this we just want to put good information out there so do let us know
- 1:03:19give us some feedback if this has helped you tonight night we will
- 1:03:23be back next week i'm not sure with who yet it's still to be confirmed but if
