- 0:19Speaker 1: Return to Glory podcast. The Huskers are seven and six,
- 0:25Speaker 1: winning record for the first time. It's twenty sixteen Hunter's Arb.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Nikki Austin Rose to Code of Free Tag. Feels good
- 0:34Speaker 1: to say that coming off a Big Bowl game win
- 0:37Speaker 1: against Boston College twenty to fifteen in New York City?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Are you glad you didn't go? Hunter? If I pleasant
- 0:47Speaker 2: to be there.
- 0:47Speaker 3: I like, like the ugliest game ever.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Huskers are glad that I didn't go?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Is that why we won? That's the real question?
- 0:56Speaker 1: Could be? Could be? Could be the weather? Yeah, it
- 1:02Speaker 1: looked looks fun to play, And fun is a very
- 1:09Speaker 1: good term in my mind, because I like, I think
- 1:11Speaker 1: those players probably like playing and muddy. Now, I don't
- 1:13Speaker 1: know if it's fun to watch. It's kind of mucked.
- 1:15Speaker 2: But I will say this when, like when you slide
- 1:18Speaker 2: on the field for like five yards, that looks pretty fun.
- 1:21Speaker 1: That's what I was gonna say.
- 1:22Speaker 2: It's fun.
- 1:23Speaker 3: There was there was one play where the guy caught
- 1:25Speaker 3: the ball and slid like fifteen yards out of bounds.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it was.
- 1:32Speaker 1: It was great. A lot to get to, uh specifically
- 1:35Speaker 1: with the game, but I mean high level, big picture Nebraska.
- 1:42Speaker 1: It's seven and six in twenty twenty four, and leading
- 1:48Speaker 1: up to the game, I was getting the here we
- 1:52Speaker 1: go again of all the fans, saying, this game really
- 1:55Speaker 1: doesn't matter. It's the first game of twenty twenty five.
- 1:58Speaker 1: So many players have left. You know, if we lose,
- 2:01Speaker 1: it's not a big deal. We've gotten new coaches, they
- 2:03Speaker 1: haven't had time to work with the players yet. And
- 2:08Speaker 1: Nick Bot, I've mentioned before in love listening to his podcast,
- 2:11Speaker 1: had a really good podcast and why the ballgame matters,
- 2:14Speaker 1: and it does matter, Like it's a football game. You
- 2:19Speaker 1: have an opportunity to go out and win. And we
- 2:24Speaker 1: don't want to make excuses and say here's why it
- 2:27Speaker 1: doesn't matter. We did what we needed to do. We
- 2:31Speaker 1: for the most part, dominated Boston College from start to finish,
- 2:36Speaker 1: and one in New York City, which had a lot
- 2:43Speaker 1: of reasons behind it for some of our players and
- 2:47Speaker 1: Matt Ruhle's hometown. So I just wanted to start out
- 2:50Speaker 1: and saying like this game was important and for the
- 2:53Speaker 1: first time, and who knows how long Nebraska, Well, I
- 2:56Speaker 1: guess you could say Wisconsin, Nebraska has won a important game. Colorado,
- 3:02Speaker 1: I guess this year two we won an important game
- 3:04Speaker 1: and and a one score game. For that matter, it
- 3:10Speaker 1: shouldn't have been a one score game, but.
- 3:11Speaker 2: A game, and fully contract expires on Tuesday.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Do we just want to jump into that right away,
- 3:20Speaker 1: because that's that's I mean, that's the negative, that's the top.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I feel like that's really the only thing from this game.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I mean, obviously the weather impacted how it was played.
- 3:30Speaker 2: He had some of the bigger players opt out for
- 3:32Speaker 2: Boston College, so I think that kind of, you know,
- 3:35Speaker 2: changed your perspective of baby how the game could have.
- 3:37Speaker 2: But we also had players opt out, not quite as
- 3:40Speaker 2: big as the a SEC Defensive Player of the Year,
- 3:44Speaker 2: but I mean special teams is probably the thing that
- 3:46Speaker 2: stuck out.
- 3:48Speaker 1: So we can talk about I guess the season as
- 3:51Speaker 1: a whole, the big picture conversation. I think that's one
- 3:55Speaker 1: way of viewing. You know, you win a game, you
- 3:57Speaker 1: go seven and six, what that meant for the season
- 4:00Speaker 1: for next year. Let's save that for right now, and
- 4:02Speaker 1: let's actually talk about the game itself like we do
- 4:04Speaker 1: week to week, and specifically some of the things that
- 4:09Speaker 1: could have an impact on the immediate future, which topic
- 4:13Speaker 1: one here that I think is very very at the
- 4:16Speaker 1: front of people's mind is at fully and Matt Ruhle
- 4:22Speaker 1: even said there will be a massive overhaul or something
- 4:26Speaker 1: like that in his press conference with the special teams.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Let's go through special teams. We had everything blocked except
- 4:36Speaker 1: for a kickoff, So that was good.
- 4:40Speaker 2: No kickoff, Yeah, that was good. In the history of football,
- 4:45Speaker 2: do you think a kickoff has been blocked? Is that
- 4:48Speaker 2: even possible? It's illegal, right.
- 4:50Speaker 3: I mean, is a fine way to do it if
- 4:52Speaker 3: they could.
- 4:54Speaker 1: So didn't have that, But yes, pat blocked and a
- 4:57Speaker 1: pump blocked the hunt that was successful, and then the
- 5:05Speaker 1: fake field goal on the same drive that was not successful.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I mean, overall, our special teams almost once again lost
- 5:16Speaker 1: us the game when our defense came out and played
- 5:19Speaker 1: very well, our offense did what they needed to do
- 5:21Speaker 1: given the conditions, and our special teams almost blewed again.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I don't know where else you can point to besides
- 5:35Speaker 1: just completely changing the entire philosophy with special teams. Once again,
- 5:40Speaker 1: It's not like we've done or it is we've done
- 5:43Speaker 1: this in the past. Like we have talked about how
- 5:45Speaker 1: new coach we got to spend. Was it was this
- 5:48Speaker 1: rule or was this frost where we started? There's the
- 5:51Speaker 1: emphasis on special teams meetings, one hour meetings before everything.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I think that was Yeah, so like we've done this
- 5:59Speaker 1: whole Special Teams is horrible. Let's fix it. But I
- 6:04Speaker 1: do think, unfortunately for Ed Fuley, I think it does
- 6:09Speaker 1: have to start there in order to do a massive
- 6:11Speaker 1: overall it does.
- 6:13Speaker 2: You can't have fifteen extra weeks of practice. Now it
- 6:16Speaker 2: was wet like the block pat it does. It did
- 6:18Speaker 2: look like the ball slipped, but you can't have a
- 6:22Speaker 2: block pat returned and a black punt in the same game.
- 6:27Speaker 2: After it's like, hey, this is we really need to
- 6:29Speaker 2: work on this, and you have fifty extra practices to
- 6:31Speaker 2: work on it.
- 6:33Speaker 3: And the thing that the block punt is you can't like,
- 6:35Speaker 3: that's the one thing you can do in that like position.
- 6:38Speaker 3: All you do is get that ball off and you
- 6:40Speaker 3: you're gonna win that game. And that's that's the one
- 6:42Speaker 3: play you couldn't do, is have that punt blocked. That's
- 6:45Speaker 3: that just game life like it was over. If you
- 6:47Speaker 3: pump that ball twenty yards old.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Yeah, because we're up twenty to zero twenty two. Special
- 6:54Speaker 2: Teams gives up. However, be any nine points no eight points? Well,
- 7:00Speaker 2: I guess it depends on which one. I don't remember
- 7:02Speaker 2: they scored the extra point on that so techicly, especially
- 7:04Speaker 2: if you have nine points.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Yeah, no, they went for two, so they didn't. Well,
- 7:11Speaker 1: you're right, so technically it was eight. But yes, special
- 7:14Speaker 1: teams not just plays that led to points, like actually
- 7:18Speaker 1: points on special teams pretty much put them in the
- 7:22Speaker 1: first single from the two or whatever it was. It's
- 7:25Speaker 1: not good. So we don't need to spend forty minutes
- 7:30Speaker 1: talking about special teams because I think there's not gonna
- 7:32Speaker 1: be many things we can solve here. But I think
- 7:38Speaker 1: ed Foley, we're just trying to go a new direction.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Next year, we'll have a new coach, we'll have a
- 7:43Speaker 2: new hunter, we'll have a new long snapper.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And what's funny is by the end of the year
- 7:49Speaker 1: it wasn't It wasn't the special lists. Maybe the long
- 7:53Speaker 1: snapper ticker ended up being okay, Like John Hole was good,
- 8:00Speaker 1: assuming it was John Hole in the uniform and not Maher.
- 8:06Speaker 3: You had you had confidence at the end of the
- 8:08Speaker 3: year that you come out, could come out make a
- 8:09Speaker 3: field goal.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Yes, especially after the Ohio State game and some of
- 8:14Speaker 1: the kicks he made there and then our punting all year,
- 8:16Speaker 1: like Boushini proved himself to be a very like.
- 8:20Speaker 2: The black puns are Busini's faults.
- 8:26Speaker 1: So it's funny. We've gone back and forth on is
- 8:29Speaker 1: it a special teams problem or is it a specialist problem.
- 8:32Speaker 1: We've we've done that, everybody's done that. We've we've talked
- 8:34Speaker 1: about how it's actually our kicker is the problem. It's
- 8:36Speaker 1: not the coaches. Our scheme's fine. We just can't hold
- 8:39Speaker 1: the ball, we can't snap the ball. And you know
- 8:42Speaker 1: that might have been the case here, but at any rate,
- 8:45Speaker 1: it's the players you have doing it and then what
- 8:48Speaker 1: you're scheming behind it and it's not working. It didn't
- 8:51Speaker 1: work again, almost costs us another game for once, it
- 8:54Speaker 1: didn't actually cost us a win. We actually got the
- 8:58Speaker 1: win on the at the end of it. So yeah,
- 9:02Speaker 1: that's that was big takeaway one. Probably the negative takeaway
- 9:06Speaker 1: that everybody it's good talk about number two that I thought,
- 9:15Speaker 1: it's very much worth talking about, especially after nobody knows
- 9:18Speaker 1: about this, knew about this until really after the game.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Was the Ramir Johnson story and everything that went on
- 9:26Speaker 1: with him during the year. Nobody knew. We just all,
- 9:29Speaker 1: I guess we're chalking it up to injury, maybe didn't
- 9:34Speaker 1: know why he didn't play, and turns out he was
- 9:38Speaker 1: dealing with a lot of family stuff back in New
- 9:41Speaker 1: York with his mom, and his mom ended up passing
- 9:44Speaker 1: away in November, and we know nobody knew about that,
- 9:49Speaker 1: even members in the team potentially didn't know about that.
- 9:53Speaker 1: And for him to come back and do this in
- 9:55Speaker 1: this game, I mean, it's it's a really really neat
- 9:57Speaker 1: story and it's worth calling out, you know, real getting
- 10:00Speaker 1: very emotional in the post game, and then Ramire getting
- 10:04Speaker 1: named player of the game for the impact that he
- 10:07Speaker 1: had and maybe not as overall best the yardage game,
- 10:10Speaker 1: but it was like he got the first down that
- 10:14Speaker 1: sealed the game, which we've never been able to do ever.
- 10:19Speaker 1: And it was Ramiir Johnson, the fifth year senior that's
- 10:22Speaker 1: been stuck with the program through the thick and thin,
- 10:27Speaker 1: back at home in his hometown after a very very
- 10:30Speaker 1: rough year, stealing the deal and almost you know, writing
- 10:33Speaker 1: it off as Nebraska's comeback season for the future.
- 10:43Speaker 2: It was that. Yeah, it was. It was a good game. Obviously,
- 10:49Speaker 2: I don't think the offense looked as explicitly wanted to,
- 10:51Speaker 2: but you're it was very satisfying seeing Ramier, especially when
- 10:54Speaker 2: they tell you that, you just feel good about it.
- 10:56Speaker 2: And when he was the one who got the first down,
- 10:58Speaker 2: he got the first touchdown, and I mean he's had
- 11:03Speaker 2: several injuries and he's been he like, I think we've
- 11:07Speaker 2: all liked him the whole time. We're never like this
- 11:09Speaker 2: guy shouldn't be on the team and we don't want
- 11:10Speaker 2: to see him get touches. There was a point in
- 11:12Speaker 2: time where he was our starting and running back a
- 11:15Speaker 2: couple of years ago, right, yeah, so very it was
- 11:18Speaker 2: a good way to end the career, especially I mean
- 11:21Speaker 2: even for like those other seniors, you know, Gifford and
- 11:24Speaker 2: Robinson who had been there for five years and hadn't
- 11:28Speaker 2: gotten to get the job done. And it's a good
- 11:30Speaker 2: way to end of the year.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Well that's that's thing about ball games is you can't
- 11:36Speaker 3: tell me it doesn't matter, because it's it's a good
- 11:38Speaker 3: send off for all those seniors and you could tell
- 11:40Speaker 3: they cared like and then and then you have all
- 11:44Speaker 3: the freshmen playing too, like a bunch of freshmen now
- 11:46Speaker 3: with all the transform you get them reps like, you
- 11:50Speaker 3: can't tell me that game didn't matter at all. On
- 11:54Speaker 3: the offensive side.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Well, I don't know.
- 11:59Speaker 3: The first of that game, I thought your offense looked
- 12:02Speaker 3: really good until that fourth quarter. I like, you're moving
- 12:05Speaker 3: the ball well the whole game, I thought, I just don't.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Did you guys come away like impressed with your offense
- 12:13Speaker 3: from that game?
- 12:15Speaker 2: I don't think I would say that, But I will
- 12:17Speaker 2: also acknowledge the conditions. The field, Yeah, slippery, it was wet,
- 12:23Speaker 2: which could just impact timing. The interception. You know, Banks
- 12:27Speaker 2: was on the ground I assume because he lost his
- 12:29Speaker 2: footing and then the ball was picked. It was a
- 12:31Speaker 2: bad place to throw it there anyways.
- 12:33Speaker 3: But well that that was the ugliest football field I
- 12:36Speaker 3: saw in a long time, Like there was nouting at all.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Like, So we went down that first drive and then
- 12:47Speaker 1: threw the pick. One of the more impressive drives of
- 12:50Speaker 1: the year was our second drive. I think it was
- 12:52Speaker 1: a fifteen play, seventy five issue yard drive and went
- 12:56Speaker 1: down and punched it in Like I do. I think,
- 12:59Speaker 1: given given the conditions, what we need to do for
- 13:01Speaker 1: the game. Yeah, I mean it was a very solid performance.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Yes, statistically it was efficient. I mean we're average four
- 13:10Speaker 2: yards of rush, completed seventy eight of our passes, like,
- 13:15Speaker 2: that's pretty good.
- 13:17Speaker 1: It was, and and yes, I at the end we
- 13:20Speaker 1: finally sealed the deal. Did our offense get a little
- 13:22Speaker 1: bit stagnant there in the fourth quarter? I guess. I
- 13:27Speaker 1: mean the three and now in the block pot was
- 13:29Speaker 1: not good. You know, we started at the one yard
- 13:34Speaker 1: line to start the fourth quarter and got out of
- 13:36Speaker 1: the at least the ad zone there, so that that
- 13:42Speaker 1: was good and solid. At least I thought our offense
- 13:45Speaker 1: did a decent job.
- 13:48Speaker 3: It is.
- 13:48Speaker 1: It's going to be an interesting off season when it
- 13:53Speaker 1: comes to what this offense looks like with Dana next year. Dylan,
- 13:59Speaker 1: and from some of the other things I've heard, like
- 14:01Speaker 1: the emphasis on the off seasons is going to be
- 14:03Speaker 1: him trimming up and losing fifteen to twenty pounds and
- 14:08Speaker 1: being able to have the ability not not to necessarily
- 14:11Speaker 1: run for fifty yards a game, but just be more
- 14:14Speaker 1: elusive and evasive in the pocket. The end of the
- 14:17Speaker 1: game was part of and from what it kind of
- 14:22Speaker 1: sounds like, was it was Dylan just saying I'm pulling
- 14:26Speaker 1: the ball on getting into keeping it like it wasn't
- 14:28Speaker 1: a design zone read. I don't know if that's actually
- 14:31Speaker 1: true or not. That's just what I've heard was it
- 14:34Speaker 1: was Dylan just saying, I'm gonna go, you know, make
- 14:36Speaker 1: a play or read this and do it on my own,
- 14:39Speaker 1: you know, sliding you could, you could say late on
- 14:43Speaker 1: the first one. The unfortunlike personal foul on Boston College.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Obviously their fans weren't happy. You don't throw the flag.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Our fans aren't happy. It's one of those things that
- 14:58Speaker 1: I do think he probably slid late. I do think
- 15:01Speaker 1: that officials protect the quarterback more. I do think there's
- 15:04Speaker 1: an emphasis on sliding late now and also an emphais
- 15:07Speaker 1: on protecting the quarterback. And it was like right in
- 15:09Speaker 1: the middle of all of it, and we got the
- 15:12Speaker 1: benefit of the call there. The next one just comes
- 15:17Speaker 1: I think from playing more where it's third and two
- 15:20Speaker 1: and he easily get picked the first down up, but
- 15:23Speaker 1: he slides himself up and word yard short and we've
- 15:27Speaker 1: seen that before. That comes with just doing it more
- 15:33Speaker 1: in practice. So I think that's need it needs to
- 15:37Speaker 1: It's not going hopefully does. It needs to be an
- 15:39Speaker 1: added element of his game. But Dylan played a very
- 15:44Speaker 1: very solid game as well at the quarterback position, made
- 15:49Speaker 1: some good throws, managed the game very well. I think
- 15:56Speaker 1: the only way to go here with this offense is
- 15:57Speaker 1: going to be up after this year, hopefully go down.
- 16:01Speaker 1: If it does, I don't I don't really know how,
- 16:05Speaker 1: but it's on the rise with what we have and
- 16:10Speaker 1: the pieces that we have coming in. I'm not gonna
- 16:13Speaker 1: say it's a good offense. Yeah, I guess potential, but
- 16:17Speaker 1: it's got got to show it to us. And this
- 16:20Speaker 1: game was again a very good display of the balance
- 16:25Speaker 1: that I think Dana wants to play with. And we
- 16:27Speaker 1: haven't talked about Emma Johnson yet either. How he had
- 16:30Speaker 1: another very solid game is running back and affirmed I
- 16:34Speaker 1: would say his spot as the lead rusher heading in
- 16:37Speaker 1: the next year.
- 16:39Speaker 2: It was funny watching the game, you know, the Nebraska
- 16:43Speaker 2: media machine, you just expected something different, but it just
- 16:48Speaker 2: this felt like the same team from all year. I
- 16:52Speaker 2: don't know. When I was watching, I wasn't like, oh man,
- 16:54Speaker 2: this team feels it's different. It feels outside of maybe
- 16:58Speaker 2: the EMMITTT. Johnson, like, hey, we're going to use this
- 17:01Speaker 2: guy like he's a freaking stud, so we're going to
- 17:04Speaker 2: actually feed it to him offensively. It felt similar to
- 17:08Speaker 2: what the last especially the last three games, but the
- 17:10Speaker 2: whole year like they were. There was times where you
- 17:14Speaker 2: were frustrated with the play call and what happened and
- 17:16Speaker 2: how players behaved. But I mean, the one thing that
- 17:19Speaker 2: stood up to me penalties. I didn't I don't know.
- 17:23Speaker 2: It did not feel like we had a ton of
- 17:25Speaker 2: penalties on us. I could be wrong. We had six,
- 17:30Speaker 2: but there was a couple there. It was all in
- 17:32Speaker 2: the fourth quarter, but like the first three quarters are
- 17:34Speaker 2: pretty clean.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think the penalty part of it, I
- 17:38Speaker 3: think came along with it. I think the refs let
- 17:41Speaker 3: them play a lot that game, like the d bats
- 17:45Speaker 3: and wide receivers could just go adde all game. So
- 17:48Speaker 3: early in the game, nebrask got deep shot and the
- 17:51Speaker 3: should have called pass advanced on I thought, because the
- 17:53Speaker 3: guy got hit super I can't I can't remember who
- 17:55Speaker 3: that was. Anyway, they shot, But then they were consistent
- 18:02Speaker 3: went the whole game. The REP. The rep is let
- 18:04Speaker 3: both teams play. I thought, I.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Didn't think the record was bad.
- 18:10Speaker 3: If you're gonna be consistent about it like that, I'm
- 18:13Speaker 3: cool with it. But but yeah, they definitely are not
- 18:17Speaker 3: calling past experances at all, like one bit.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought, given the conditions and the situation, right
- 18:25Speaker 1: I wouldn't know if i'd use the word consistent, but
- 18:29Speaker 1: there were there were calls favored both ways for both
- 18:32Speaker 1: teams at various points throughout the game. So there's not
- 18:39Speaker 1: enough to go into the whole ref discussion again, and
- 18:42Speaker 1: how we think, you know, it isn't to get to
- 18:44Speaker 1: play right. I think they've got a lot of plays
- 18:46Speaker 1: wrong this game, but it was for both teams at
- 18:49Speaker 1: various points in time. So they did they let they
- 18:52Speaker 1: let them play a lot, so I think offensively overall,
- 18:58Speaker 1: like we'll see, we'll see what it turns into, but
- 19:04Speaker 1: it seemed like it was. It was they did what
- 19:06Speaker 1: they need to do in the conditions. Flipping over defensive
- 19:13Speaker 1: side of the ball. Very very very impressed with how
- 19:20Speaker 1: the defense played. Really the whole game. Robi show, they're
- 19:24Speaker 1: running back. I thought he could have had a big
- 19:28Speaker 1: day and Boston College wanted to establish the wrong game.
- 19:30Speaker 1: They never could. He ended up ten carries, I believe
- 19:33Speaker 1: for twenty one yards and he had one carry for
- 19:35Speaker 1: eleven so on first down. I think I heard the
- 19:40Speaker 1: stat that they averaged under two yards of carry on
- 19:42Speaker 1: first down. Like our defense came out and played and
- 19:48Speaker 1: especially stopping the run and then you know, in a
- 19:51Speaker 1: game like that, it is you have guys slipping over
- 19:53Speaker 1: the field. It's hard to make accurate throws. Grayson James
- 19:57Speaker 1: is he did a decent job at quarter back, but
- 20:00Speaker 1: he's not He's not an elite guy back there under center.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Our defense played really well. It seemed like they could
- 20:06Speaker 1: not when they wanted to get a drive going, or
- 20:10Speaker 1: they tried to or even they had a little bit momentum.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Then we stopped him on fourth down, and we stopped
- 20:14Speaker 1: We did that four times, zero for four on fourth down,
- 20:16Speaker 1: which is an important call out.
- 20:18Speaker 2: And it is funny. If they had a field goal
- 20:20Speaker 2: kicking game, you know, they probably kicked those fields. I mean,
- 20:24Speaker 2: they didn't miss a field goal early, but they probably
- 20:27Speaker 2: went in the game if they kicked the field goals
- 20:31Speaker 2: they couldn't. And then we stopped them on fourth down
- 20:35Speaker 2: and they weren't even like I mean, they were short
- 20:38Speaker 2: fourth A lot of times. It was like fourth and two.
- 20:40Speaker 2: You know, it wasn't like a fourth and long. So
- 20:43Speaker 2: I was also impressed, but I mean it did. There
- 20:48Speaker 2: were some names like Donovan Jones. That was the one.
- 20:53Speaker 2: I was like, this guy, I don't know if I
- 20:54Speaker 2: saw you to play all year, Like, I have no
- 20:57Speaker 2: idea who this guy is.
- 20:58Speaker 1: He did convert from state to corner and basically played corner.
- 21:01Speaker 1: I think I heard over half the snaps, So we
- 21:06Speaker 1: expected that with this ball game of some younger guys
- 21:09Speaker 1: getting some some snaps, some plays. Your core, your solid
- 21:15Speaker 1: core though still played majority of the snaps. But you did.
- 21:18Speaker 1: You had some guys stepping up and filling in because
- 21:22Speaker 1: they had to. Like, that's just the era and not
- 21:24Speaker 1: just Nebraska, right, that's every team in America playing in
- 21:27Speaker 1: a bowl game. Now, you just you're gonna have new
- 21:30Speaker 1: people playing because of the transfer portal and people opting
- 21:34Speaker 1: out for the draft. So yes, credit to all those
- 21:38Speaker 1: guys that stepped in. I don't want to go through
- 21:40Speaker 1: name all of them because there's several, but they did.
- 21:44Speaker 1: They did a very good job, especially on the defensive
- 21:45Speaker 1: side of the ball. And in Boston College, like you said,
- 21:49Speaker 1: didn't have a kicking game the conditions, we did what
- 21:52Speaker 1: we needed to do to win that game. I never
- 21:55Speaker 1: I didn't think this game was going to be any
- 21:56Speaker 1: higher scoring than this day. Don't say no. Yeah, I think,
- 22:06Speaker 1: along with a lot of other people that that were
- 22:08Speaker 1: climbing the points I just I didn't think that was
- 22:10Speaker 1: gonna be like this. That's absence of the weather. The
- 22:13Speaker 1: weather just keeps it even mower scoring.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought after defense for that game with a
- 22:22Speaker 3: lot of transfers, I thought it was mostly like a
- 22:25Speaker 3: Ben don't break defense. I thought Boston College was like
- 22:27Speaker 3: moving ball well most of the game. But I also
- 22:29Speaker 3: felt like they were in between the forties for a
- 22:32Speaker 3: lot of game, and then you would stop them right
- 22:33Speaker 3: when they would get there, like like they would get
- 22:36Speaker 3: the midfield, move up to midfield, and then you would
- 22:37Speaker 3: hold them every single time they got there. That's what
- 22:39Speaker 3: it felt like to me. I would come away very
- 22:46Speaker 3: happy that my defense played with having people left and
- 22:48Speaker 3: stuff and new coach and.
- 22:53Speaker 2: I don't know, I you feel good good going into
- 22:59Speaker 2: twenty twin five.
- 23:03Speaker 3: You know your run your run defense is is the
- 23:06Speaker 3: main part I can't very impressed with because that's because
- 23:10Speaker 3: what they're what was the third or four string quarterback.
- 23:15Speaker 2: He was their second string quarterback, I thought, the second string.
- 23:19Speaker 3: So that's coming in that game. You know, that's what
- 23:22Speaker 3: you're gonna try to stablish the run game.
- 23:25Speaker 2: That they couldn't.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Yeah, uh, I mean guys like Elijah Judy played a lot,
- 23:33Speaker 1: Vincent Shavers got the the black shirt this week, just
- 23:39Speaker 1: throwing out a couple. Keona Davis got some minutes. It's
- 23:42Speaker 1: it's it's gonna be hard to replace Pie and Nash,
- 23:44Speaker 1: I mean it will. They were they were very You
- 23:46Speaker 1: want to talk about just blowing up. I mean that's
- 23:50Speaker 1: that was their job. Is how big of not even
- 23:52Speaker 1: without any of their skills set, They're just huge bodies.
- 23:56Speaker 1: So you know, feeling that Riley than Poppel got some minutes.
- 23:59Speaker 1: I think those are the guys that you're going to
- 24:01Speaker 1: see next year filling in on the D line, in
- 24:04Speaker 1: addition to some of the transfers that we got in.
- 24:07Speaker 1: So it is it's what's promising, looks hopeful for the
- 24:12Speaker 1: future for defense as well, with John Butler obviously going
- 24:16Speaker 1: to be potentially some new things that we maybe aren't
- 24:21Speaker 1: used to or that we'll hear about. But Rule did
- 24:24Speaker 1: mention he doesn't want to doesn't want to overhaul the defense,
- 24:28Speaker 1: which rightfully, so there's no need to with how well
- 24:31Speaker 1: they played this year. I want to talk about one
- 24:34Speaker 1: other thing about the game before we get big picture,
- 24:39Speaker 1: and that goes to just play calling in general. Some
- 24:43Speaker 1: of the you know, trick plays, the fakes, and I
- 24:48Speaker 1: don't I don't have a right, right or wrong answer
- 24:50Speaker 1: to this. This is a it's a bowl game with
- 24:55Speaker 1: the announcers joke about it, like teams have extra weeks
- 24:58Speaker 1: prepare you put the things in your arsenal for a
- 25:02Speaker 1: bowl game. Who do you guys think? Like who's ultimately
- 25:06Speaker 1: calling these plays? Like where you know one? I guess
- 25:11Speaker 1: they're probably designed or created that you know, found from
- 25:13Speaker 1: other teams. You steal them, assistant coaches probably put them together,
- 25:17Speaker 1: But like who's calling them? And that's on on all
- 25:20Speaker 1: the trick plays. What's funny though, is the fan reaction
- 25:25Speaker 1: to it all and the Twitter reaction, and I think
- 25:28Speaker 1: it's so overrated. Like I'll just take one example in
- 25:31Speaker 1: the game that happened back to back. It was third
- 25:37Speaker 1: down and five, I believe, and we threw it twice
- 25:43Speaker 1: in the red zone and everybody just exploded on Dana
- 25:52Speaker 1: and how here we go had such a solid run
- 25:55Speaker 1: game going and then we went past pass We had
- 26:00Speaker 1: a four third and five from wasn't on the goal line.
- 26:05Speaker 1: We threw it and then I believe ran the fake
- 26:11Speaker 1: punt or something I can't remember. The exact situation, basically
- 26:13Speaker 1: threw it twice again. No, we went forward on fourth
- 26:16Speaker 1: down and threw it and that was a touchdown that
- 26:18Speaker 1: we had on the wheel route to Emitt. So well,
- 26:24Speaker 1: it's funny. Is nobody bitched about that play call? Because
- 26:27Speaker 1: it worked? And it's one of those things that if
- 26:31Speaker 1: it doesn't work, people complain. If it works, people don't
- 26:33Speaker 1: say it works. And that's the nature of play calling
- 26:37Speaker 1: when it comes to these trick plays. It's the same
- 26:39Speaker 1: thing that fake field goal works with Bushini, we are
- 26:45Speaker 1: the most geniuses of geniuses for calling two fake special
- 26:50Speaker 1: teams in one drive because no one ever does that.
- 26:54Speaker 1: That's an unheard of But because we didn't get it
- 26:57Speaker 1: and the design of it was what it was, why
- 27:02Speaker 1: the hell would we do that. That's such a stupid call.
- 27:05Speaker 1: If you're if you're gonna go for it, just go
- 27:07Speaker 1: for it. Like it's just funny. That's how people react
- 27:10Speaker 1: to it. I I stay away from play calling in general,
- 27:14Speaker 1: like I just I avoid it because I don't think
- 27:18Speaker 1: that that is necessarily the end all of the outcome
- 27:24Speaker 1: of the game. Now, the game planning and the scheming
- 27:27Speaker 1: behind all of it, and your identity and all that.
- 27:30Speaker 1: That stuff matters, But as far as individual play calls,
- 27:35Speaker 1: I just don't get into. And that's I think the
- 27:37Speaker 1: average fan would disagree with that, because that's what that's
- 27:40Speaker 1: the easiest thing to bitch about as a fan. The
- 27:42Speaker 1: easiest thing is to watch a play say what the
- 27:44Speaker 1: hell was that? That was stupid. It's the easiest thing
- 27:47Speaker 1: to do. Dack. You do it all the time because
- 27:49Speaker 1: you're just a casual fan of everybody. You just's that
- 27:53Speaker 1: play call.
- 27:58Speaker 3: I so back that fake fund fake field goal. You
- 28:02Speaker 3: got to think like rule has a little bit going it,
- 28:06Speaker 3: Like the head coach going these ball games is definitely
- 28:08Speaker 3: helping on those play calls. Like you go into ball
- 28:11Speaker 3: games years laying out on the table and who gives?
- 28:13Speaker 3: Who gives a crap? Tried out? Yeah, like you said
- 28:19Speaker 3: about that fake punt though, so say you don't get that,
- 28:21Speaker 3: everybody online is gonna be like, oh, that's the worst
- 28:23Speaker 3: play call ever. But now since you got its the best.
- 28:26Speaker 3: But now I will say that fake field goal, that
- 28:28Speaker 3: was a terrible play call. You didn't get it, still
- 28:31Speaker 3: terrible play call, Bushini up the middle.
- 28:35Speaker 1: If we would have got it would have been a
- 28:36Speaker 1: terrible play call. Yes, still, yes, it would have said that. Know,
- 28:41Speaker 1: a single person would have said.
- 28:42Speaker 3: That, I would would have said it.
- 28:44Speaker 1: It would have been, oh my gosh, what nobody would
- 28:46Speaker 1: have ever thought Bushini would run the ball because he
- 28:49Speaker 1: said he never runs it. And what a neat moment
- 28:51Speaker 1: for getting a senior you know, being able to score.
- 28:54Speaker 1: That's what it would have been if you would sort
- 28:55Speaker 1: he did.
- 28:56Speaker 3: There's also there's also reason I didn't work. It's because
- 28:58Speaker 3: it was Machinie up the middle, Like, yeah.
- 29:04Speaker 2: I don't know, I didn't think. I honestly didn't think
- 29:06Speaker 2: anything of it. I was like, I wasn't even disappointed
- 29:09Speaker 2: it didn't work. I was like, well, well we tried,
- 29:11Speaker 2: you know, like it's.
- 29:14Speaker 1: It's all here to me. Play calling and this comes
- 29:17Speaker 1: from the professional world that at least Austin and I
- 29:21Speaker 1: kind of work in is risk and reward. I think
- 29:25Speaker 1: every coach in football, let's stick to football, has a
- 29:30Speaker 1: different risk appetite. Man, we're getting into some heavy business
- 29:36Speaker 1: words here, but I.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Have a different here.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Their risk, your ability to take on more risk as
- 29:42Speaker 1: a coach is different for every coach. Dak who's a
- 29:44Speaker 1: coach in the NFL, it takes on a lot of risk.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Dan Campbell, thank you, Like he's the one that comes
- 29:50Speaker 1: to mind for everybody that Dan Campbell, you know what,
- 29:53Speaker 1: He's just gonna do it. He's gonna take risks. And
- 29:55Speaker 1: what do dak what do people think of Dan Campbell
- 29:58Speaker 1: right now as a head coach in the NFL?
- 30:01Speaker 3: Awesome? But also also when you're down down seven the
- 30:08Speaker 3: Bills kicking on side kick, like what are you doing there?
- 30:11Speaker 3: Like people people go them on that one.
- 30:13Speaker 1: But so I think I think what you kind of
- 30:17Speaker 1: just said it, people's minds are all over the place
- 30:20Speaker 1: on for the most part. Now they're winning. So he's
- 30:25Speaker 1: a really damn good football coach. But we've seen the
- 30:27Speaker 1: other side of it. When you're a coach like that,
- 30:29Speaker 1: that is a high risk, higher reward coach, and you
- 30:32Speaker 1: don't win and it doesn't work, you look like the
- 30:36Speaker 1: biggest idiot on the planet. The flip side of that
- 30:39Speaker 1: is being ultra conservative. And if you just and I
- 30:45Speaker 1: will say this is I think how Rule was coaching
- 30:47Speaker 1: for a while, especially on the offensive end. It's so
- 30:51Speaker 1: conservative that you don't give yourself a chance to go
- 30:54Speaker 1: win games. At the same time, you're not really ever
- 30:58Speaker 1: gonna get blown out, You're you're gonna always kind of
- 31:01Speaker 1: be in games, but we don't know how to win
- 31:03Speaker 1: the big game. Tony White's defense I think was a
- 31:06Speaker 1: little more high risk, high reward. I feel like what
- 31:10Speaker 1: we've heard with John Butler and bringing in the consultants
- 31:14Speaker 1: on the defensive side, it maybe he's going to get
- 31:16Speaker 1: dialed back a little bit. So my point to all
- 31:19Speaker 1: this is saying every coach has a different risk tolerance
- 31:23Speaker 1: and what they want to do. If you're winning, it's
- 31:28Speaker 1: always going to be better. If you're losing, it's not.
- 31:32Speaker 1: And when it comes to doing trick plays, it's kind
- 31:35Speaker 1: of the name of the game. If it works, you
- 31:38Speaker 1: look like a genius. If it doesn't, it looks like
- 31:39Speaker 1: you're an idiot. And it's just the reality of it.
- 31:42Speaker 1: It's if on those plays and in all the situations,
- 31:47Speaker 1: can you I'll say it beat the number the statistical
- 31:50Speaker 1: stats out there probabilities of what you should be doing. Right,
- 31:54Speaker 1: If you're succeeding better than what you should be, then
- 31:57Speaker 1: you look like a genius.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Winning cures all it does. That's why we weren't upset
- 32:06Speaker 2: when we didn't get that fourth down the fake field goal.
- 32:09Speaker 2: If we lose by a field goal. You know what,
- 32:11Speaker 2: everyone's gonna be super upset about the fails fake field
- 32:15Speaker 2: goal a time.
- 32:15Speaker 3: Yep, I absolutely hate the win. Coaches go conservative, like
- 32:22Speaker 3: I like today the Vikings game they Ken Un Kong
- 32:28Speaker 3: could have ran three straight times. You make the factory
- 32:30Speaker 3: us your timeouts, and city comes out and throws it, like,
- 32:33Speaker 3: go out and win the game. Don't get the ball
- 32:35Speaker 3: back to the other team. Like that's what I always think.
- 32:37Speaker 3: I think you go out and win the game. You
- 32:39Speaker 3: don't give the other team a shot to beat you.
- 32:41Speaker 1: And see what's crazy is And I know which player
- 32:43Speaker 1: talking about. They threw it on on first down with twelve.
- 32:47Speaker 3: Levels yep, Like and I got that. Guys just slip
- 32:50Speaker 3: short of the first down.
- 32:50Speaker 1: But that's right, don't execute it. You're what the hell
- 32:54Speaker 1: are you throwing the ball for? Yeah, I think that.
- 32:59Speaker 1: You know a lot of Husks fan you tie it
- 33:00Speaker 1: back to the old Nebraska days of running the ball.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Some some fans are still wanting to do that constantly.
- 33:10Speaker 1: That's a very conservative style of play. But guess what
- 33:12Speaker 1: if you have the better offensive line and the better
- 33:15Speaker 1: everything strength and conditioning program, you're perhaps I can't work
- 33:19Speaker 1: I don't think we're there and able to do that
- 33:22Speaker 1: right now. So it is just it is a big
- 33:25Speaker 1: scale of of what risk you're willing to take on.
- 33:30Speaker 1: And like you said, Austin, winning here's all. And that's
- 33:33Speaker 1: why winning this game, you still have it to win.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Like rule said, the last time, we'll celebrate you know,
- 33:41Speaker 1: winning six games or seven games. But look at the
- 33:44Speaker 1: Iowa game. How much better we played for for three
- 33:49Speaker 1: point nine quarters of that game and lost, and all
- 33:55Speaker 1: the good things that we did that game just got
- 33:58Speaker 1: completely overshadowed and shut down. And the I'm talking about
- 34:01Speaker 1: the players and the coaches mindset, the ones people that
- 34:03Speaker 1: actually matter, not the fans who think they matter, but
- 34:06Speaker 1: we don't. The players and the coaches think about how
- 34:10Speaker 1: deflating that is that you play better than a team
- 34:13Speaker 1: for the game and you get beat because you can't
- 34:17Speaker 1: execute three little things. That's why winning is such a
- 34:21Speaker 1: big thing and why yeah, like seven and six big
- 34:26Speaker 1: picture as we transition to that. I don't know what
- 34:28Speaker 1: that everybody's minds are out, but guess what, it's a
- 34:35Speaker 1: step in the right direction from last year. It's a
- 34:42Speaker 1: winning season.
- 34:45Speaker 3: You you're going to the off season coming off a
- 34:48Speaker 3: win for the first time since how long. I guess,
- 34:52Speaker 3: Iowa you did.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Beat two years in a losing season.
- 34:57Speaker 3: Yes, yes, well I mean you don't.
- 35:02Speaker 1: So here's here's the big topic now, getting away from
- 35:06Speaker 1: the nitpicky parts of the game and looking more big
- 35:10Speaker 1: picture offseason, and we'll have plenty of episodes to talk
- 35:13Speaker 1: about expectations and thoughts and winning the offseason national championship
- 35:17Speaker 1: for yet another year. It's all a matter of perspective
- 35:24Speaker 1: when you think about how the game's going so for
- 35:28Speaker 1: the season or in the next year. If you were
- 35:31Speaker 1: looking at point in time when we were five and
- 35:36Speaker 1: one going to Indiana and you would say, well, we
- 35:42Speaker 1: squeaked out a ball win to get the seven and
- 35:44Speaker 1: six against Boston College, I think at that point in
- 35:52Speaker 1: time you'd be like, what the hell happened?
- 35:54Speaker 2: I mean, at that point in time, you were saying
- 35:56Speaker 2: we were gonna win ten wins.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks for continuing to remind me that. I actually
- 36:02Speaker 1: got in my head to that point because I.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Just I just can't believe that happened. I remember, I
- 36:06Speaker 2: just like, what is happening?
- 36:10Speaker 3: Don't know that I thinking that, But directly after that,
- 36:13Speaker 3: you're thinking, Okay, I'd be happy to win a BALLGAMEGA
- 36:15Speaker 3: in Spots College.
- 36:16Speaker 1: So I mean, yeah, so what I guess as we
- 36:21Speaker 1: get into this next talk, you have to think about
- 36:24Speaker 1: it as a perspective of whe wherever you want to go, right,
- 36:27Speaker 1: like the beginning of the rural era, would we be
- 36:29Speaker 1: happy with year two of a seven and six season
- 36:33Speaker 1: beating Boston College. Let's go, let's go to the beginning
- 36:38Speaker 1: of this year when our win total was seven and
- 36:40Speaker 1: a half game. We looked at our schedule and we
- 36:43Speaker 1: all took the under, and we all took the under
- 36:45Speaker 1: at seven. Well, the pre Bowl game the under. We
- 36:50Speaker 1: got six games, six wins, and then we end up
- 36:52Speaker 1: winning the ball game. Yeah.
- 36:54Speaker 3: Does that Does a bull game countant for your runner
- 36:57Speaker 3: on the win season?
- 36:57Speaker 1: No? No, okay, but you know, think about it from
- 37:00Speaker 1: that from that perspective, Okay, I still think you know,
- 37:05Speaker 1: we all took the under. That was what we thought.
- 37:06Speaker 1: But as far as what we were kind of hoping
- 37:08Speaker 1: and a lot of Husker fans thought we I mean
- 37:10Speaker 1: several people I talked to we should get eight wins
- 37:14Speaker 1: this year and look at nine, we could even get
- 37:16Speaker 1: the nine going is going into the year, yep, And
- 37:19Speaker 1: you have, you have that, you have that lens or
- 37:21Speaker 1: that frame, that perspective. Now, let's just even take the
- 37:24Speaker 1: smallest perspective of saying, okay, post iowa, right, we're six
- 37:28Speaker 1: and six, here's where we're at, and look at the
- 37:30Speaker 1: outcome of this game and what it means for the future.
- 37:33Speaker 1: You look at it from that narrow of a frame,
- 37:35Speaker 1: you're saying, Wow, that's great, Like we do have a
- 37:38Speaker 1: lot of momentum, it's very positive. We won so many
- 37:42Speaker 1: good things happened. Yes, we almost flew it, but we
- 37:45Speaker 1: didn't like You look at it from that small lens
- 37:48Speaker 1: or small frame, and I think that's where a lot
- 37:50Speaker 1: of people sit, and a lot of people here on
- 37:53Speaker 1: the media and other podcasts and shows, they are looking
- 37:56Speaker 1: very very small picture. I'm not saying that's wrong by
- 38:02Speaker 1: any means, but that's the reality I think where people
- 38:06Speaker 1: look at So it is all matter of perspective of
- 38:09Speaker 1: what you think and what you want, how forward looking,
- 38:12Speaker 1: how past looking you look at a program, at a
- 38:15Speaker 1: team overall. So that that's my initial thought to lead
- 38:20Speaker 1: into this because I I think I have some other
- 38:23Speaker 1: things I want to say, but Austin, I'll let you go.
- 38:25Speaker 2: So if we're going to talk. I was literally explained
- 38:28Speaker 2: this to my lines this weekend, where I was saying,
- 38:32Speaker 2: you know, they're gonna be shipped for being excited for
- 38:34Speaker 2: a six and six football team playing in a bowl game.
- 38:37Speaker 2: I was like, well, you know what, you go into
- 38:39Speaker 2: the year. If I had told you we blow out Colorado,
- 38:43Speaker 2: we'd beat Wisconsin, and we win a bowl game, and
- 38:46Speaker 2: we'd beat Iowa, that would have been an incredible year.
- 38:49Speaker 2: And we lost to Iowa by three points as time expired.
- 38:52Speaker 2: You know, it's like it was literally five seconds away
- 38:56Speaker 2: from being the great year two in that rule for me,
- 39:03Speaker 2: for my expectations were I know other people had different expectations,
- 39:06Speaker 2: but if you told me we killed Colorado, be Wisconsin,
- 39:09Speaker 2: be Iowa, and win a bowl game, that's a freaking win.
- 39:13Speaker 2: And we almost did all of that. We got really close.
- 39:16Speaker 2: So I'm not gonna let that ruin the year. I
- 39:18Speaker 2: think it was a good year. I think we made
- 39:20Speaker 2: good progress and the bowl game was good enough that
- 39:23Speaker 2: you're excited for what's gonna happen next year With the
- 39:25Speaker 2: players we currently have.
- 39:29Speaker 3: It's amazing how much this season went from like its
- 39:32Speaker 3: ups and downs. It was like so going before the
- 39:36Speaker 3: Illinois game, you were on top of the mountain.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:43Speaker 3: And then after all that, I can't remember. Did you
- 39:47Speaker 3: win a game after Illinois?
- 39:49Speaker 2: Yes, then we know we won.
- 39:52Speaker 1: There was a it was like as team Illinois.
- 39:56Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, not Indiana. We had a we had a
- 39:59Speaker 2: low game game in Indiana.
- 40:02Speaker 3: After Indiana, it just hit rock bottom again, like by everybody.
- 40:06Speaker 3: And then you beat Wisconsin and then one was like, okay,
- 40:08Speaker 3: we're like, Nebraska is back everything. Then the Io game
- 40:11Speaker 3: happens in your rock bottom game, and now I don't know.
- 40:13Speaker 3: After the ball game, you're like, yeah, it.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Is a roller coaster, right of of emotions. And I
- 40:23Speaker 1: will say, we're we're pretty used to that mostly negative emotions.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Awesome to your point about at a very common thing.
- 40:30Speaker 1: We're excited about a ball game at you know, six
- 40:34Speaker 1: and six, and okay, do you want us to lose?
- 40:37Speaker 1: Like this is just don't play it man. This is
- 40:41Speaker 1: the exact like conversation of are you does this game matter? Right?
- 40:46Speaker 1: I get it, Like, if you want to zoom out
- 40:48Speaker 1: and look at big picture, are you are you happy
- 40:50Speaker 1: that we went six and six? I would say probably,
- 40:53Speaker 1: you know, giving your expectation level, I would say, probably
- 40:55Speaker 1: not like I you would you were hoping for more,
- 40:58Speaker 1: But you're playing a football game. The game matters. You
- 41:01Speaker 1: want to win the game, so go win the game.
- 41:04Speaker 1: And then yeah, your game matter. You should get excited invested.
- 41:09Speaker 2: In the game. You're you know, people are fired up,
- 41:12Speaker 2: like there's some energy in the program.
- 41:15Speaker 1: So now I'll reverse this on the flip side of this,
- 41:18Speaker 1: now zooming out for this program, and here's the start
- 41:22Speaker 1: of the off season, official off season talk. All I
- 41:27Speaker 1: heard after this win and even while we were kicking
- 41:30Speaker 1: their butt, but then after too. This off season is
- 41:34Speaker 1: going to be the one of the biggest, most hyped
- 41:40Speaker 1: off season that we have in a while. I do
- 41:43Speaker 1: believe that with Riola, with Holgerson, with these new players
- 41:47Speaker 1: that everybody's getting not just Nebraska, but we're gonna claim
- 41:50Speaker 1: that we have one of the better, more underrated recruiting classes.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Whatever we are going to be rated, whatever that matters.
- 41:59Speaker 1: You know, the defense gonna get praise for how they
- 42:01Speaker 1: played against Boston coll I mean, it's gonna be a
- 42:03Speaker 1: very very hype to offseason. I think it's important to
- 42:10Speaker 1: just also remember, like Dak talked about the highs and lows,
- 42:15Speaker 1: I it there were there were points in this year
- 42:18Speaker 1: guys that all of us and fans and not just
- 42:21Speaker 1: us wave with all the fans, we were questioning the
- 42:23Speaker 1: future with rule here and I'm not letting that go yet.
- 42:30Speaker 1: I don't think it's at the same level that it
- 42:33Speaker 1: was pre Wisconsin, but you know, beating Wisconsin, playing well
- 42:38Speaker 1: against Iowa, but then losing that game sets you back.
- 42:41Speaker 1: And then this game helps a lot too. But just
- 42:45Speaker 1: I think this is a step that helps. But just
- 42:50Speaker 1: keep that in mind. It's not like we jumped from
- 42:54Speaker 1: last year to this year. Going you know, we guys,
- 42:57Speaker 1: we haven't hit a win total that Vegas is set
- 43:00Speaker 1: for us in since twenty sixteen. Like we've been under
- 43:06Speaker 1: that every year. So if you want to set that
- 43:08Speaker 1: as the expectation line as far as just the general public,
- 43:13Speaker 1: which is probably inflated because of the Husker betters, but
- 43:17Speaker 1: it it is, we've hit the unders and so going
- 43:21Speaker 1: into next year, there's going to be the kool aid,
- 43:25Speaker 1: there's going to be the hype. This will be one
- 43:27Speaker 1: of the bigger spring games. We start the year in
- 43:29Speaker 1: Kansas City in Arrowhead against Cincinnati. It's going to be huge.
- 43:36Speaker 1: I really need I think I say this every year,
- 43:38Speaker 1: but I really need to see it from this team first,
- 43:41Speaker 1: and they have, they will, they'll the word will be
- 43:44Speaker 1: said that we have all the pieces. I've already seen
- 43:48Speaker 1: Dylan Ryola throwing too, and they listed off, lifted, listed
- 43:52Speaker 1: off all the receivers and said with data holders and
- 43:56Speaker 1: calling plays, yep, sign me up. I'm like, oh, boy, like,
- 44:00Speaker 1: we're already saying we have the best receiving group ever
- 44:05Speaker 1: in Nebraska history, one of the best that we've had
- 44:07Speaker 1: in a long time. I'm like, based off of what
- 44:09Speaker 1: people like, what are we I get it? These receivers
- 44:14Speaker 1: you want to say the cow guy is Sayah Hunter
- 44:17Speaker 1: and Dane Key, Like, I get it, but good god,
- 44:22Speaker 1: can we just like see it first? But that's what's
- 44:26Speaker 1: gonna be. That's what you're gonna hear. That's what people
- 44:28Speaker 1: are gonna talk about. That's part of being a fan.
- 44:31Speaker 1: I get it. But I'm just saying for myself, all
- 44:36Speaker 1: of the recruiting and stuff, I'm just like, great, let's
- 44:39Speaker 1: see if we can develop them and put them together
- 44:41Speaker 1: in the right places two win football games. Like with
- 44:48Speaker 1: the schedule that we have next year, which just came
- 44:50Speaker 1: out and once again now looking at it looks pretty favorable.
- 44:58Speaker 1: So I thought this year, yep, we did. You're right,
- 45:03Speaker 1: that's that's exactly right, and that's the that's the frame
- 45:07Speaker 1: that you want to say, like the beginning of the year,
- 45:11Speaker 1: look at our schedule, we have an easy schedule. We
- 45:13Speaker 1: should we expect to win? What well? I would say
- 45:17Speaker 1: going into that we probably didn't meet that.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Yep, I will say it's gonna be interesting because next
- 45:23Speaker 2: year we go. We're going in with different questions. Right
- 45:25Speaker 2: this year was is del real actually as good as
- 45:28Speaker 2: we think he's gonna be? Can the defense maintain.
- 45:31Speaker 1: We go to that first question, answer that Dak.
- 45:34Speaker 2: I'd say, Oh, answer that Dak, Dak to.
- 45:37Speaker 1: Star, then you can go mmm.
- 45:44Speaker 3: I would still go an offseason with a low question
- 45:45Speaker 3: about him.
- 45:48Speaker 2: Okay, what question?
- 45:50Speaker 3: Like I don't think he didn't prove that he's absolutely
- 45:53Speaker 3: amazing this year at all.
- 45:56Speaker 1: Like I don't even know.
- 45:59Speaker 3: He can't thirteen touchdowns, eleven picks, like there was no
- 46:04Speaker 3: game this year. I think that he completely took over,
- 46:07Speaker 3: like just dominate the whole game at all. I think,
- 46:15Speaker 3: I mean you can say he's a freshman. I think
- 46:18Speaker 3: you still got toe a little bit more out of him.
- 46:19Speaker 3: But that's what I think. And like you said, like
- 46:24Speaker 3: you said about losing losing weight, I think I think
- 46:27Speaker 3: he needs to do that too coming off season. But
- 46:30Speaker 3: I was I was not blown away all this year by.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Him, not at all, no movements.
- 46:38Speaker 3: I would like, what, how can you walk away that
- 46:40Speaker 3: year being like he did an amazing season.
- 46:44Speaker 2: I'm not saying an amazing season. I think what we
- 46:48Speaker 2: found out. I think we found his floor, and his
- 46:50Speaker 2: floor is good enough to win eight football games at
- 46:53Speaker 2: least seven.
- 46:55Speaker 3: Didn't he have a stretch there though, where he had
- 46:57Speaker 3: one touchdown, eight picks or something like that.
- 46:59Speaker 2: I know, but also you have to look at the
- 47:03Speaker 2: totality of the games. I'm not saying he's perfect, but
- 47:08Speaker 2: I think we found his floor. I don't think it's
- 47:10Speaker 2: gonna get worse.
- 47:12Speaker 1: I like this because going into the year, the question
- 47:18Speaker 1: was was Dylan Royala what we expected? I would say
- 47:23Speaker 1: he was right with what I expected, like.
- 47:26Speaker 2: A freshman talented, a talented freshman with blemishes.
- 47:30Speaker 1: But I would say my expectations are probably lower than
- 47:34Speaker 1: the general Husker fan. I also say I'm probably evaluating
- 47:40Speaker 1: it lower than a general Huskar fan too. How they
- 47:44Speaker 1: would say he did Dak. I think your perspective is
- 47:48Speaker 1: very interesting and how you think of it, like you're
- 47:50Speaker 1: looking at it almost purely from a stat perspective and
- 47:53Speaker 1: a production standpoint, And Austin's right that you can't just
- 47:57Speaker 1: look at that. You have to look at the totality
- 48:00Speaker 1: of it. But it's still is the results, like the
- 48:06Speaker 1: production is the production, and we still won six games
- 48:09Speaker 1: regardless of what it was. I think the Dylan Royola
- 48:16Speaker 1: saga or the Dylan Royola story here obviously has a
- 48:19Speaker 1: lot of pieces left. I will say I was one
- 48:22Speaker 1: that didn't think he'd probably be here after a year.
- 48:25Speaker 1: I remember talking about that last offseason when we got him.
- 48:30Speaker 1: I didn't think he's going to make it past a year.
- 48:32Speaker 1: That's still not finalized, but it's looking pretty likely. It's
- 48:35Speaker 1: back I thought transfer portal was coming if we had
- 48:39Speaker 1: a six and six year. So in that sense, credit
- 48:45Speaker 1: Rule and staff for keeping him here. Now, if there's
- 48:48Speaker 1: question marks about Rule about him in general of being
- 48:52Speaker 1: the leader in the direction of the program, which maybe
- 48:55Speaker 1: some outsiders like Dak said, maybe there's still reasons the question.
- 49:00Speaker 1: I think Hustmer fans would say, you'd be a fool
- 49:02Speaker 1: to think that based on what he's able to bring
- 49:05Speaker 1: in in addition to what he can potentially do on
- 49:09Speaker 1: the field, I do think he can be maximized in
- 49:14Speaker 1: a system if it's done right. I don't know what
- 49:17Speaker 1: that is. I don't know. I don't know if Dana
- 49:20Speaker 1: is the answer. You're going to hear that Dana is
- 49:22Speaker 1: the answer and it is going to be better with him.
- 49:27Speaker 1: But I do think Austin your point about before we
- 49:31Speaker 1: did see that, and there's no guarantee that that doesn't
- 49:35Speaker 1: come back next year and we see that again if
- 49:38Speaker 1: things aren't better and the system is not better. I
- 49:41Speaker 1: think a lot of what we saw this year was
- 49:43Speaker 1: the product of him being a freshman, which I think
- 49:48Speaker 1: sometimes can be an excuse, but also reality and his
- 49:55Speaker 1: big moments is a product of his talent that he
- 49:59Speaker 1: has and is arm angles and his ability. He does
- 50:02Speaker 1: have a lot of that there, but it needs to
- 50:04Speaker 1: get put all together in a system and with players
- 50:06Speaker 1: around him for it to actually shine for four quarters
- 50:10Speaker 1: and for twelve games in a season, which we didn't
- 50:13Speaker 1: see this year. So I think going into next year,
- 50:17Speaker 1: my expectations aren't much different, Like, we now know what
- 50:21Speaker 1: he can do, but there's a lot of things that
- 50:24Speaker 1: need to get better, and a lot of that maybe
- 50:26Speaker 1: isn't his technical abilities, but losing weight is one thing
- 50:30Speaker 1: that he can control and that can only help him.
- 50:34Speaker 2: Right.
- 50:34Speaker 1: I don't think I don't think losing fifteen pounds is
- 50:37Speaker 1: going to make him. Now, watch what happens. He'll lose
- 50:41Speaker 1: fifteen pounds and he'll look like he's throwing ducks next
- 50:43Speaker 1: next year. I mean, he shouldn't happen. But you know
- 50:46Speaker 1: what I mean, I think that's that's where Royola is at.
- 50:49Speaker 1: And I think he is a big piece for I
- 50:51Speaker 1: don't think he's a big piece. He is the piece
- 50:55Speaker 1: for rule at Nebraska for it to work if Rayola
- 50:59Speaker 1: gets pissed and leaves.
- 51:00Speaker 2: I mean, he's our best recruiting thing right now. The
- 51:03Speaker 2: only draw, I should say the only draw, but he's
- 51:05Speaker 2: pretty close to the only draw.
- 51:08Speaker 1: That's why the rule Holgerson Riola triangle is either going
- 51:14Speaker 1: to work or it's all gonna fall apart. Like that's
- 51:17Speaker 1: that's just what's gonna happen. So we'll see what happens. Like,
- 51:20Speaker 1: I did not expect him to be here this year,
- 51:22Speaker 1: especially when we if you were told me we won
- 51:24Speaker 1: six games I just thought he'd be like, Nope, I'm
- 51:27Speaker 1: better than this. But because he's because I think some
- 51:32Speaker 1: of those games you can look back to and say
- 51:34Speaker 1: that is on Dylan, a couple of missthrows him not
- 51:38Speaker 1: playing well. That keeps you saying, okay, I do have
- 51:41Speaker 1: a part in this. I need to be better. So
- 51:45Speaker 1: in our defense was good. If our defense was shitty
- 51:48Speaker 1: and we were scoring thirty five points a game and
- 51:51Speaker 1: we have one six games, see yeah, but that wasn't
- 51:56Speaker 1: what happened.
- 52:02Speaker 2: I agree. I mean yeah, I said, I think we
- 52:05Speaker 2: saw the floor. I don't think the stats tell you
- 52:08Speaker 2: the whole story. And I think he's he's put in
- 52:13Speaker 2: a lot of energy into recruiting people to come here,
- 52:17Speaker 2: Like I think he is now invested in the team.
- 52:19Speaker 2: Not as much as Rule obviously, but he has brought
- 52:22Speaker 2: in a lot of people that he wants to be here.
- 52:24Speaker 2: He's at least bought in with Rule being like, I
- 52:26Speaker 2: will put myself out there for you for these So
- 52:28Speaker 2: I think he is. He's in.
- 52:33Speaker 3: Now. When was the last time going in the off
- 52:35Speaker 3: season though, you've had a quarterback where you're like, Okay,
- 52:41Speaker 3: we're pretty confident that we want have a problem of
- 52:43Speaker 3: the quarterback position.
- 52:47Speaker 1: Last year.
- 52:49Speaker 3: Okay, besides like like that you saw on the like, I'm.
- 52:53Speaker 2: Thinking actually from a previous season.
- 52:56Speaker 3: It's been Ariane was running right, Yeah, I mean that
- 53:01Speaker 3: was that long ago.
- 53:03Speaker 2: Yeah, but it feels long ago.
- 53:07Speaker 3: Like you guys not worried about Raila one big on
- 53:09Speaker 3: the next season.
- 53:11Speaker 2: Not he is not high, he's not not on the list.
- 53:15Speaker 1: But I have the same hesitations of him not being
- 53:21Speaker 1: able to scramble and still making young mistakes, like yeah,
- 53:25Speaker 1: I have I have. I have the worry that we're
- 53:27Speaker 1: gonna hear oh, he's only a sophomore next year, like
- 53:31Speaker 1: that's what's probably what's gonna happen, which is really will
- 53:34Speaker 1: be an excuse next year. I don't think that you
- 53:36Speaker 1: can make that anymore with his ability. But that's the
- 53:40Speaker 1: worry I have, is that he's still going to show
- 53:42Speaker 1: signs of inexperience. But I think that there.
- 53:46Speaker 2: Wasn't ever a game this last year where I was like, man,
- 53:48Speaker 2: Dylan really lost us that game. Sure, there was the
- 53:51Speaker 2: Illinois game where we didn't get that, but I'm not
- 53:57Speaker 2: going to be holding to a couple of mister as.
- 54:00Speaker 2: But there wasn't a game where it was like, Dylan
- 54:01Speaker 2: Moss is that game right? No, like everything was wrong
- 54:09Speaker 2: against Indiana. That's not just him.
- 54:11Speaker 3: No, that No, that definitely wasn't it.
- 54:15Speaker 2: Iowa. There's but again several issues, and there wasn't. I don't.
- 54:20Speaker 2: I don't feel like Dylan's the one who lost the game.
- 54:25Speaker 3: I also had the factor in you had a guy
- 54:29Speaker 3: dumb as rocks calumn your plates half the season. So
- 54:34Speaker 3: maybe way speaking that he came out of the season
- 54:37Speaker 3: with one good thing.
- 54:38Speaker 2: That's true.
- 54:40Speaker 3: No more Saturn Field.
- 54:42Speaker 2: Well, he's still on the ross.
- 54:43Speaker 3: He's still on the Yeah, okay, he's still in it.
- 54:45Speaker 1: I don't know how, but Andy's still getting paid the same.
- 54:47Speaker 1: I heard that. Oh god, that's insane.
- 54:53Speaker 3: See come out with probably the greatest thing you could
- 54:55Speaker 3: have all season three by him as a gros see anymore?
- 55:01Speaker 1: Okay, Well, I'm sure there'll be a lot of football
- 55:04Speaker 1: offseason talks still coming forward. I do want to talk
- 55:08Speaker 1: and congratulate the Huskerman's basketball team on their diamond had
- 55:13Speaker 1: Classic Tournament championship, first time since when DAK.
- 55:20Speaker 3: Nineteen sixty eight, right or something like that, seventy eight.
- 55:25Speaker 1: Nope, that was Oregon State.
- 55:29Speaker 3: I texted I text these guys, because when they say
- 55:31Speaker 3: in the broadcast is like they're talking about the game.
- 55:34Speaker 3: They're like, yeah, this is the last time it ended
- 55:36Speaker 3: up being States, Like last time the Huskers had one
- 55:38Speaker 3: of in season tournaments in nineteen seventy eight will being
- 55:41Speaker 3: Oregon State. But same thing.
- 55:44Speaker 1: I believe it was like the early two thousands might
- 55:47Speaker 1: even been a year two thousand for Nebraska. Uh we
- 55:51Speaker 1: beat Oregon State the championship. The defense showed up to
- 55:55Speaker 1: play for three games this week, and that that was
- 55:59Speaker 1: the big story. In addition to Bryce Williams and the
- 56:04Speaker 1: numbers that he put up against these teams. Bryce has
- 56:09Speaker 1: recently looked like the guy that we said we need
- 56:13Speaker 1: someone that just takes charge of this team and when
- 56:16Speaker 1: we need to get buckets, when he need somebody to
- 56:18Speaker 1: step up, regardless of how he's been playing in the
- 56:21Speaker 1: game leading up to the moment, he needs to shine
- 56:24Speaker 1: in the moment, and Bryce has done that as of
- 56:28Speaker 1: recent It's big for this team, and this team's fun
- 56:32Speaker 1: to watch. Just like last year's team. We don't have case.
- 56:37Speaker 1: I thought that was gonna really just make this team
- 56:40Speaker 1: a lot less fun to watch. But something about the
- 56:42Speaker 1: way we play for each other, and defensively especially, we're
- 56:48Speaker 1: so together.
- 56:49Speaker 2: I mean, it's such classics orban to keep basketball it grine, it.
- 56:56Speaker 1: Makes you, it makes you, it makes it fun to watch,
- 57:02Speaker 1: and offensively against lower scoring but we we take smart shots.
- 57:06Speaker 1: We have a system that we're built around. The only
- 57:09Speaker 1: caveat with all of that, I don't know who we've played.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Of work, we played Creighton. I don't know how good
- 57:16Speaker 1: Creyton is. We obviously, I think Oregon State could be decent,
- 57:23Speaker 1: don't know that for sure, but I have not. I
- 57:26Speaker 1: did not watch a minute and I don't even watch
- 57:29Speaker 1: a highlight. I don't It's like that game didn't even matter,
- 57:31Speaker 1: that Michigan State game, Like I didn't even get played
- 57:33Speaker 1: because I don't even know. I know it was bad.
- 57:36Speaker 1: I didn't even look at the stats, didn't even look
- 57:38Speaker 1: up look up the box any I don't even know
- 57:40Speaker 1: what happened that game. So take that into into account.
- 57:44Speaker 1: But this team has a lot of potential to get
- 57:49Speaker 1: to the tournament and win a game, which is not
- 57:52Speaker 1: something I was probably expecting after losing rank and case
- 57:57Speaker 1: from last year's team. But here we are talking about
- 58:01Speaker 1: what we have to do to get there. Non conference
- 58:03Speaker 1: is pretty much over Southern University tomorrow night on December thirtieth,
- 58:09Speaker 1: and we're in a conference play and I don't think
- 58:12Speaker 1: the story has changed. Non conference. We did what we
- 58:15Speaker 1: need to do, maybe even a game better than what
- 58:17Speaker 1: we needed to do, or we're thinking we were gonna do.
- 58:20Speaker 1: Now go five hundred and conference play, which is where
- 58:23Speaker 1: we're sitting at right now.
- 58:24Speaker 2: One and what yep, I agree that I'm surprised. I
- 58:29Speaker 2: really I was gonna it was gonna be a lot
- 58:32Speaker 2: more disappointed. I sick this to do. Okay, but you're right.
- 58:38Speaker 2: Bryce is just he took the reins and he looked
- 58:40Speaker 2: really freaking good doing it.
- 58:44Speaker 3: This isn't the most talented team in the world, but
- 58:46Speaker 3: they completely bought into how they're going to win games.
- 58:51Speaker 3: Like you to count the great out games on defense.
- 58:53Speaker 3: Your offense is not not great, but it's at least
- 59:01Speaker 3: you have one player that you can rely on those
- 59:03Speaker 3: games to carry you through a game when you get
- 59:05Speaker 3: through slumps.
- 59:06Speaker 1: Here's here's the thing. On offense. I think we have
- 59:09Speaker 1: the pieces still. Now, you're right, I don't know that's better.
- 59:12Speaker 1: We have a bunch of talented players. But Connor season
- 59:16Speaker 1: finally it's just a knockdown shooter again like what we
- 59:20Speaker 1: were hoping he could be. Shouldn't say again, but he
- 59:23Speaker 1: he is filling that case a role where when he's
- 59:26Speaker 1: on the court, you have to know where he's at
- 59:29Speaker 1: and you have to guard him. That wasn't happening early
- 59:31Speaker 1: in the year. We were worried about that. Juwan Gary
- 59:33Speaker 1: has done Juwan Gary stuff. Andrew Morgan randomly will just
- 59:38Speaker 1: go off for twelve or fourteen points in the like
- 59:40Speaker 1: a guy like that. That is a piece, that is
- 59:44Speaker 1: an element that you have to prepare for. Here's what
- 59:47Speaker 1: I hope is that we haven't not that we've intentionally
- 59:51Speaker 1: done it, but shown all of our cards right already
- 59:54Speaker 1: on offense and the books out, because that if teams
- 59:59Speaker 1: figure out how to guard this there a certain style
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: and what people can do, then it's scary. So we
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: have to just keep evolving and hopefully we see some
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: things from different players that we haven't seen yet before.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: You know, guys like Raleigh Wooster, like I know he's
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: not an offensive threat, but is there a way, Is
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: there a part of the system that he can give
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: us ten to twelve points a game somehow that we're
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: not expecting you know, can Gary have the night that
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: goes off for twenty five or thirty because that's just
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: what Juan Gary does. We're hoping that he probably can
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: you know, is Sam and and or mainly Sam, like
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: because now Goggles isn't playing much anymore. You know, can
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: Sam come in and have one of his twelve point
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Sam Hoiberg spurts of defense and hitting two open threes,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: which we really haven't seen yet this year. Like that,
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: we need to hopefully have some cards left that we
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: can still show when we get to Big ten play.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: But so far things are clicking right now, and which
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: is where you want to be ahead Nick heading into
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: conference play.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been good. The women did just get smoked,
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: but you know that'll happen to.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: Number one team in the country.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: That all happen to.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: Ye, all right, Well, have a good new year.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: One one more thing before we leave. In the season
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: grade for the Huskers football team.
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: Gut reaction without any sort of analysis be m.
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: C minus, okay plus back middle of the road.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: I would say, my but I guess we can talk
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: about it what we do our full year.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: I just want to quick gut reaction in the season
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: right there.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Great that great cliffhanger for next Sleep episode.
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: Great job.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: Just wait, that's why I came here. That's gonna be
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: like the reason I gave is a B plus for
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: the end of season grade.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: Don't forget what he said.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: You know I got the Huskers at a minus.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: All right, Happy New Year.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: Everyone go bick red if you are school, no vikings,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: And do you want to say anything about the Navy
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: midshipman Noah.
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: We we lost that game for America.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: M h.
