- 1:04Speaker 2: Around here, we talk about life, love, healing, growth and
- 1:07Speaker 2: mindset shifts that help you become the best version of
- 1:10Speaker 2: yourself Today, I am kicking it with a poet who
- 1:15Speaker 2: was recently featured in nineteen Lifestyle magazine. And you guys
- 1:18Speaker 2: know how I like to do. I like to give
- 1:20Speaker 2: my guests the opportunity to introduce themselves. So La run,
- 1:24Speaker 2: thank you for coming and kicking me. Go ahead and
- 1:25Speaker 2: tell the people who you are.
- 1:27Speaker 3: And I'm problem with My name's larn I really, I'm
- 1:31Speaker 3: literally from dating Ohio but I'm in Columbus, Ohio right now.
- 1:33Speaker 3: So that's currently so pretty much poet spoken word artists,
- 1:38Speaker 3: and it's a little bit about me.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Who I am. So that's the simple just of it,
- 1:44Speaker 1: all right.
- 1:44Speaker 2: So we're gonna start off with the mindset moment where
- 1:47Speaker 2: we talked about mindset that shapes how we experience life
- 1:49Speaker 2: and love. Okay, okay, in your opinion, what mindset shift
- 1:55Speaker 2: changed the way that you see life and love?
- 2:00Speaker 1: Oh gosh, that's a great question. So I just turned
- 2:03Speaker 1: forty eight this year, me too, all right.
- 2:07Speaker 3: So I saw a lot of my friends didn't make
- 2:11Speaker 3: it to see forty eight. A lot of them didn't
- 2:13Speaker 3: make it see thirty, let alone forty. Wow. I've had
- 2:17Speaker 3: a few accidents. Let's see, I've been through a lot
- 2:20Speaker 3: these last couple of years. I've been through a divorce.
- 2:22Speaker 3: I lost my house, then I lost my job a
- 2:25Speaker 3: month later, so then I found another job, and then
- 2:28Speaker 3: I got ended like a month after I got my job,
- 2:31Speaker 3: so I left my car.
- 2:33Speaker 1: So I've just been.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Thinking about everything that's happened to me over these forty
- 2:36Speaker 3: years at how I can no longer be here. So
- 2:39Speaker 3: I just try to live like every day it is
- 2:41Speaker 3: going to be my last and just be grateful when
- 2:43Speaker 3: I'm still here, I'm still alive. So that's just a
- 2:45Speaker 3: few of the things that's changed me, my my mindset.
- 2:48Speaker 3: So I I'm just grateful every day I get to
- 2:50Speaker 3: wake up, I pray one morning. Every morning when I
- 2:52Speaker 3: wake up, I pray and thank God for another day,
- 2:55Speaker 3: read my little scriptures, and just watch some meditation videos
- 2:58Speaker 3: sometimes I read sometimes to watch meditation videos. So that's
- 3:02Speaker 3: pretty much what shifted my mindset because I don't know
- 3:04Speaker 3: when my last age is gonna be my last. I
- 3:06Speaker 3: just saw a posting on another one of my mentors.
- 3:08Speaker 3: He said, every day you wake up as another day
- 3:10Speaker 3: you're closer to Diane because.
- 3:12Speaker 1: We're not getting younger.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Wow.
- 3:15Speaker 1: He said that that, Like, oh my gosh.
- 3:17Speaker 3: He's right. My grandfriend, my grandfather was blessed see eighty
- 3:20Speaker 3: eight years, so he lived a long time. My grandmother
- 3:23Speaker 3: she passed away like two thousand and like right before
- 3:26Speaker 3: the pan depth around twenty seventeen. She died in her
- 3:30Speaker 3: like seventies eighties. So I'm just grateful. That's what I
- 3:34Speaker 3: try to be. I just try to have a gratitude
- 3:35Speaker 3: mindset because even know all the bad things that happened
- 3:37Speaker 3: to me here, I'm still here.
- 3:39Speaker 1: I've still got an opportunity. So that's that's how I live. Now.
- 3:44Speaker 2: That's a great that's a great mindset to have a
- 3:47Speaker 2: gracious mindset. Not everybody have that, but most people should
- 3:50Speaker 2: adapt that because when you look at life as I'm
- 3:54Speaker 2: still here, you see it through a different lens. And
- 3:57Speaker 2: I think that more people need to acknowledge that, and
- 4:01Speaker 2: life wouldn't be as hard as we think that it is,
- 4:05Speaker 2: because you know, waking up with the ability to have
- 4:09Speaker 2: a roof over your head and clothes on your back
- 4:12Speaker 2: and food on the table. Not everybody has that, so
- 4:15Speaker 2: we need to be grateful that we are some of
- 4:17Speaker 2: the ones that are blessed to have those things. So
- 4:20Speaker 2: thank you for sharing that. And I know that your
- 4:24Speaker 2: poetry centers around black men, yes, and mental health yes.
- 4:29Speaker 2: So from your perspective as a poet, how have you
- 4:33Speaker 2: seen men gravitate life while being taught to suppress their emotions?
- 4:39Speaker 1: Oh? Wow, that's a great question. Some of them do
- 4:43Speaker 1: better at others, right, Like I said, Like.
- 4:45Speaker 3: I said earlier, I lost a lot of my friends,
- 4:47Speaker 3: some of them to street violence that some of us
- 4:50Speaker 3: go through one of my friends. He jumped himself to
- 4:53Speaker 3: death because he couldn't handle it no more. He just
- 4:55Speaker 3: lost his job, lost the girl. He just jumped himself
- 4:57Speaker 3: to death, so he can't handle it anymore. So which
- 5:00Speaker 3: is what drew me to being a poet, because I
- 5:02Speaker 3: started seeing everybody and in me myself. Like you said,
- 5:04Speaker 3: we were always taught to hold our emotionals in and
- 5:07Speaker 3: suppressed our emotions.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I started looking more and deeper into this.
- 5:10Speaker 3: It causes stress, it causes heart attacks, it causes a
- 5:13Speaker 3: lot of things, and when we get older, which that's
- 5:16Speaker 3: another reason I'm grateful for my health. I don't have
- 5:18Speaker 3: any major elements or anything like that. I'll just I'm
- 5:20Speaker 3: just getting over a cold, but I'll take that over
- 5:23Speaker 3: cancer or anything else or other people go through. So
- 5:27Speaker 3: I've never had any heart attacked, strokes, none of that
- 5:29Speaker 3: stuff and stuff. So so I do a lot of
- 5:33Speaker 3: stuff here luckily too, like like we have the African
- 5:36Speaker 3: American men as well, and Swalk come up in August,
- 5:39Speaker 3: so I got a group of brothers around. We actually
- 5:41Speaker 3: just started a poetry group, so I got to my
- 5:43Speaker 3: other brothers in it. And I'm glad because he said
- 5:47Speaker 3: he wrote a poem. He's actually had suicidal thoughts for
- 5:50Speaker 3: which I didn't even know. And Mike he talked about
- 5:53Speaker 3: being suicidal. So me doing poetry, I'll bringing other people
- 5:57Speaker 3: in and it they're telling their story now, which I
- 5:59Speaker 3: never all myself as somebody who could help other people.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I'm an introvert by nature. I don't like to talk,
- 6:05Speaker 3: which is surprisingly not even doing this. I wouldn't would
- 6:10Speaker 3: talk or nothing. But once I got into poetry, it
- 6:12Speaker 3: forced me to get out there. So that's what it's
- 6:14Speaker 3: done for me. So to answer your question, I just
- 6:17Speaker 3: seen a huge transition to myself and all some other brothers.
- 6:20Speaker 3: How we hand over things like well, when I got
- 6:23Speaker 3: the Wars, I well, I went through with the Bensic
- 6:25Speaker 3: Boing situation.
- 6:26Speaker 1: So what I found out when I was going through
- 6:27Speaker 1: that that.
- 6:28Speaker 3: One bout one and four men one and seven that
- 6:30Speaker 3: don't memories act number, but it's somewhere around there go
- 6:32Speaker 3: through domestic bids.
- 6:33Speaker 1: We don't talk about it because hold it the end.
- 6:36Speaker 1: When I was.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Supposed to be tough, be strong. Black men have the
- 6:40Speaker 3: highest suicide of rates. That's another thing I found out
- 6:42Speaker 3: I was going through my thing. So I think that
- 6:45Speaker 3: but based on the poetry and all the events that
- 6:47Speaker 3: I go to.
- 6:48Speaker 1: We're starting to understand it more because when I was younger,
- 6:51Speaker 1: we didn't talk about it.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Would just be tough all the time, be tough, tough twenties,
- 6:55Speaker 3: probably all the thirties. It wouldn't tell my forties that
- 6:57Speaker 3: started understanding something. This is a problem, something on why
- 7:01Speaker 3: can't we express myself? But I think about a lot
- 7:03Speaker 3: about Jesus. Jesus was tortured, They talked about them, they
- 7:08Speaker 3: did everything they could. They killed him, and he hadn't feelings.
- 7:12Speaker 3: He got angry in from the table, he was sad,
- 7:15Speaker 3: he had all kind of raising emotions. And if you're
- 7:18Speaker 3: supposed to be like Jesus, why can't If Jesus have feelings,
- 7:20Speaker 3: then why can't I as a man have feelings?
- 7:22Speaker 2: Exactly?
- 7:23Speaker 3: That's probably gonna be one of my next poems. So
- 7:25Speaker 3: I've been asking myself that a lot. Okay, Well, if
- 7:27Speaker 3: we're supposed to be following Christ and be christ like,
- 7:30Speaker 3: why that we can't It's just play.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Human emotions like Jesus did.
- 7:34Speaker 3: We have to be tough all the time when Jesus
- 7:36Speaker 3: wasn't himself and he's the only perfect person.
- 7:38Speaker 1: In the world. But even you have feelings. So that's
- 7:41Speaker 1: something else I've been thinking about a lot.
- 7:42Speaker 2: So that's that's that is a great revelation. Yeah, because
- 7:46Speaker 2: he did flip the table over.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Well, yeah, Jesus got angry.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Moses is another character and Bible that like because I
- 7:55Speaker 3: played myself to Moses because when he could God told
- 7:57Speaker 3: him to talk.
- 7:58Speaker 1: I don't mean to give religious I'm sorry, but you're fine.
- 8:01Speaker 3: When God told him to go talk to the Pharaoh,
- 8:02Speaker 3: he said, I don't want to go talk to the Pharaoh.
- 8:04Speaker 3: I'm shy, I'm flyed, this, that and the other.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I don't want to do it. I don't want to
- 8:06Speaker 1: do it. And God sent his brother Aaron to him,
- 8:09Speaker 1: and that's what he finally did.
- 8:11Speaker 3: And then he finally Like so before I started understanding
- 8:14Speaker 3: about reading, I thought everybody in the Bible God used
- 8:16Speaker 3: people that was perfect, never seeing thing funeral. That's what
- 8:19Speaker 3: I thought initially. Then when I went to church my friends,
- 8:22Speaker 3: she taught me some scriptures and this and that and
- 8:23Speaker 3: the other, Like, wait a minute, what are you talking about?
- 8:25Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 8:26Speaker 3: This person was a drunken this person wasn't perfect, and
- 8:28Speaker 3: this person was scared, and this person told God no,
- 8:31Speaker 3: they didn't want to do it.
- 8:31Speaker 1: What do you mean?
- 8:33Speaker 3: So that kind of opened my eyes a lot too,
- 8:35Speaker 3: when I started reading the characs of the Bible and
- 8:37Speaker 3: seeing how I helped some of my friends and how
- 8:39Speaker 3: they helped me. So that's how I'm helming now.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Absolutely, that's amazing when you when you could see yourself
- 8:45Speaker 2: in some of the characters from the Bible that speaks
- 8:48Speaker 2: about volumes with your spiritual journey, because now you're making
- 8:52Speaker 2: it relatable so that you can comprehend it better. Because
- 8:55Speaker 2: we like stuff that's relatable, right, And so if more
- 8:58Speaker 2: people took the word of God and made it relatable,
- 9:02Speaker 2: more people will use the word to fight the battles
- 9:05Speaker 2: that we we face every day.
- 9:08Speaker 1: I believe the same thing, right.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Uh, why do you think so many men struggle with
- 9:13Speaker 2: expressing love openly? And how can poetry help bridge the
- 9:17Speaker 2: gap between what they feel and what they communicate?
- 9:23Speaker 3: When I got the poor, I do a lot of
- 9:24Speaker 3: reading and a lot of because when I write my poems,
- 9:26Speaker 3: like I want to know because if I do a
- 9:28Speaker 3: poem based on something, I want to be able to
- 9:30Speaker 3: have facts.
- 9:32Speaker 1: So I can't. I hate to do it, but I'm
- 9:35Speaker 1: going to.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Come back to hip hop a lot, because that's because
- 9:38Speaker 3: that's why I started writing poetry. Like, you know, I
- 9:39Speaker 3: grew up on all the gangs around music, the n WA's,
- 9:42Speaker 3: the Sleeper Dog and stuff.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Yes, thirteen, you know I should have had no businesses
- 9:46Speaker 1: to it, but I did. You know, we did.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Know one analyzes those lyrics like, well, some of these
- 9:51Speaker 3: lyrics don't sound like to do that.
- 9:54Speaker 1: I can't.
- 9:54Speaker 3: I can't listen to it now. I turned out like, yeah,
- 9:56Speaker 3: this is not who I am. I never was that
- 9:58Speaker 3: person anyway, because you know, it's just around.
- 10:00Speaker 1: So that's how I right.
- 10:02Speaker 3: But I think hip hop the media, the movies, like
- 10:04Speaker 3: all the nineties movies. I just real pumm about the
- 10:07Speaker 3: Two of the Minister, Society's the Boys in the Hood
- 10:10Speaker 3: type movies, all the hood movies we grew up watching that.
- 10:13Speaker 3: You always supposed to be hard James, and you can't.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Then we show love.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I remember a long time, I think olkoj did an interview.
- 10:19Speaker 3: This is way back today. He was on the Kenya
- 10:21Speaker 3: Ivy Wayne Show. He had a talk show back then,
- 10:25Speaker 3: said well, we're in a hard time. I need love
- 10:27Speaker 3: to that. He said, that's why he said, I need
- 10:28Speaker 3: love now. Back then, I didn't think nothing about it.
- 10:31Speaker 3: But I think was probably the first rapper that talked
- 10:33Speaker 3: about loving his music, at least the first male rapper, right.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I think hip hop has a lot to do with it.
- 10:39Speaker 3: The movies that we watched, the media always teaching us
- 10:41Speaker 3: to be tough, and it just blowing out of control.
- 10:45Speaker 3: So I think that's why, because for whatever reason, we're
- 10:48Speaker 3: taught to be pence and sexualized women and this that
- 10:52Speaker 3: and the other, and be the boys that the other.
- 10:54Speaker 3: So I think just just how we talk. He's younger,
- 10:58Speaker 3: like all the even before I was born to black
- 11:00Speaker 3: expectation movies.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I've never.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Really watched them. I don't really I heard about them,
- 11:04Speaker 3: but I've never really watched none of them. I don't.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I know who Pound gree is. That's probably about it,
- 11:10Speaker 3: Like the live movies and stuff like that. I think
- 11:12Speaker 3: where it started, and I think the media has done it.
- 11:15Speaker 3: And I think this whole nother conversation, but I think
- 11:18Speaker 3: it's playing about Hollywood.
- 11:19Speaker 1: And the record label stuff like that. So I think
- 11:22Speaker 1: the media is just a big reason of it. That's
- 11:24Speaker 1: That's just my take on it.
