- 1:03For more information. Now let's get into today's
- 1:06topic. 1st annual speaker series that we're putting on.
- 1:11So we'll have several speakers coming up over the next several
- 1:16minutes hours to talk a little bit about track and certain
- 1:20different aspects of it. The first person that I'd like
- 1:23to introduce is Greg Shores. Greg is a here relative to the
- 1:29pen relays. Back in 1986, Greg was a member
- 1:33of the four by 100 relay that actually ran a world record time
- 1:38here back in 19/19/86. He currently trains many, many
- 1:44athletic Olympic athletes down at the Performance Center in
- 1:48Fort Worth and we're grateful to have him.
- 1:51I value him as a dear friend and chipper.
- 1:54Grateful to have Greg come on board.
- 1:56Show Greg come. On thank you.
- 2:01Thank you very much, Tim. Tim's kind of like family to me,
- 2:04so I appreciate him having me up here.
- 2:06A little background on me, I am a a Fort Worth, TX guy.
- 2:10I was a sprinter. I think I was probably the, you
- 2:12know, they talked all about all these kids running 99.
- 2:14I think it was the first guy in Texas to run under 10 seconds
- 2:18way back in 1984. Continued on the TCU where we
- 2:22did, you know, they talk about the four by one.
- 2:24We did come here and set the stadium record back then.
- 2:27It was 39 one and we also set the world record here in the
- 2:31four by two. So we're on the wall of fame out
- 2:33there. TCU was a eight time all
- 2:36American every year was one of the top 8 sprinters in the NCAA.
- 2:40But since then, I've had the pleasure of coaching at the
- 2:42University of Florida, University of Texas, Texas Tech,
- 2:46as well as George Mason. And every place I've been, I've
- 2:49coached everything from a national champion in the 10K
- 2:52shot put as well as in the sprints.
- 2:55But here today, I'm really here to talk to you guys a little bit
- 2:57about what we've been able to do with sprinters down in Texas,
- 3:01coach kids from 7:00 to Olympic level sprinters down there at
- 3:05the University at AP Ranch and our youth program.
- 3:10We are four years in a row winning the USATF 4 by 1
- 3:16national championship. We set the national record.
- 3:18That's the third time we're in 39, two this past summer.
- 3:22And we did something really unique.
- 3:23We finished first and second in the four by one of the national
- 3:27championships while coming back to win the four by one.
- 3:30We had Brayden Williams who ran 9.82, Jonathan Sims who ran
- 3:3520.48, Justice Stewart 20.46452 and the 400 for Sims.
- 3:42We had the the pink bandana I heard where was also a part of
- 3:45that crew last year. I tell you all that those things
- 3:48because we have been very blessed to have some amazing
- 3:51sprinters. Now I'm here also because I'm a
- 3:54A a big fan of record tan and the reason I'm a big fan of
- 3:57record tan is because all those athletes that I'm telling you
- 4:00about have been training on a record tan track.
- 4:02Now, just so happened we started winning.
- 4:04We won our first national championship in the four by one.
- 4:07The year after that put they put that track down and I don't know
- 4:10whether it's just correlation or what have you, but you know, if
- 4:14when they say you dance with the one who brung you or you walk
- 4:17home alone, that record tan track has got us here.
- 4:20So we're we're standing by it. We've got a really amazing group
- 4:23coming back this year. We had girl finished in the top
- 4:272, girls finished in the top ten indoor in the 60 meters,
- 4:31sophomore ran 732. We've got a couple girls who run
- 4:3523, two this year already outdoor and I don't know, I
- 4:39think at least five guys that have run 10, four better in the
- 4:42100 meters. And they all train at AP Ranch.
- 4:45And along with the amazing track we have, we also have kind of
- 4:48our own philosophy about what's important when it comes to
- 4:51developing lead sprinters. And that's kind of a little bit
- 4:54what I wanted to talk to you guys about today.
- 4:56And one of our, one of my main things that I've learned all the
- 4:58years of working with brother Thornton, who was the Olympic
- 5:01coach in 2008, Steve Spurrier at the University of Florida, Andy
- 5:05Brand, I mean, across different sports, I've had the pleasure of
- 5:08working with some amazing coaches.
- 5:09They have Kearney, who's a national champion coach, Flo,
- 5:13who's a coach down in Texas, was just a, a young man when I
- 5:16started coaching coach training at the University of Florida.
- 5:18And what I've learned most, and I would share with all you
- 5:20coaches, is a couple of principles #1 if they don't know
- 5:26that you care, they don't care what you know.
- 5:30So that would probably be one of the most important things if I
- 5:32was going to start off talking to you today.
- 5:34You have got to take the time to get to know your athletes and
- 5:38understand who they are and what's important to them.
- 5:41Coaching the young kids keeps you very honest.
- 5:44They keep you very, very honest. I have parents come up to me all
- 5:46the time and they introduce their 10 year old to me or their
- 5:4915 year old and they say this is Greg Shoulders and he did this
- 5:52at TCU, he's a Hall of Famer. And they do all that and the kid
- 5:55is looking over at all the other kids, kids looking all the way
- 5:59and they're not going to remember nothing I did.
- 6:01They really don't care what I did.
- 6:03The only thing they care is how I treat them.
- 6:05And I see a lot of collegiate coaches, a lot of I get to talk
- 6:09to coaches all over the country. And one of the things I get so
- 6:12upset when I hear them say is they talk about their program
- 6:15and my system. Well, your system is nothing
- 6:18without, you know, it's kind of like saying I got a great car.
- 6:20Well, your car is no good if they don't have no tires on the
- 6:23road. So your system's only good as
- 6:25the people you're using your system with.
- 6:28So I, I would, those are, you know, from a personal
- 6:30standpoint, I say those are the two of the things that I hear so
- 6:33many coaches miss. They spend a lot of time
- 6:36gathering a tremendous amount of information and they spend a lot
- 6:39of time talking about what they've done and that etcetera.
- 6:43And they don't spend a lot of time really getting to know the
- 6:45kid and, and, and tailoring what they're doing to that athlete.
- 6:49Now you can have 10 athletes doing the exact same program,
- 6:53they can be doing the exact same workout, but each and every one
- 6:55of those athletes needs to feel like they're getting something
- 6:58unique and special for them. I've had kids that ran Great
- 7:02Forest at the high school level go to the collegiate program and
- 7:05they get to the collegiate program and the coach has his
- 7:08system or her system and then the kid is not successful
- 7:12because they the kid doesn't feel like that.
- 7:14The system is designed around them.
- 7:15They feel like the kid is supposed to fit into the system.
- 7:18So those are two big things. You got to make sure that you
- 7:21understand who the kid is and what's important to them,
- 7:25because then they know that you really care about them and
- 7:27they'll do anything you ask. And secondly, you need to
- 7:30understand that your program is only as good as the athletes
- 7:33you're working with. I told Tim, me and Tim were
- 7:36walking out in the field and I was reminiscent about when I ran
- 7:39here at the Penn Relays. And I said, you know, I can ask
- 7:42when I go to a meet today, I can always tell whether I got a
- 7:45winning team or a losing team. And it's usually about who's
- 7:48leading. If I'm leading my athletes out
- 7:51on the field, then there's a good chance that we're not going
- 7:54to do very much because I'm not running.
- 7:57But when they feel like they're in control and they're leading
- 7:59me on the field and I'm just there to turn them loose, then I
- 8:02got something really important, something really great to work
- 8:05with. And that's, again, Ego.
- 8:07And the other one I can't say because they got me on the.
- 8:09Well, he told me I could say whatever I want, but I had an
- 8:11old coach. He used to tell me all the time.
- 8:14He says, Greg Ego. Well, yeah, every time I'll let
- 8:18y'all fill in the adjutant. And that's what happens a lot of
- 8:21times we have a little success and our ego gets involved and
- 8:24next thing you know, we're not thinking about what's really
- 8:26good for the kids, we're thinking about what's best for
- 8:28us. Now in doing so, from my
- 8:32philosophy, when they came, we we were very fortunate at AP
- 8:35Ranch back in 19, I believe it was 1819, we started looking at
- 8:39building the track and we started looking at building the
- 8:42track. You know, I had everybody I got
- 8:44on there and I talked to everybody out there from from
- 8:47Bynum to Mondo. I talked to all these different
- 8:50people and I had them come out and talk to me about building my
- 8:52track. And everybody had a story to
- 8:55tell. But I can tell you when the
- 8:57people that I spoke to from Record Tan came, they came with
- 9:01a story that was asking me about what I needed, what was
- 9:05important to me. And one of the things that was
- 9:07important to me is I didn't want my athletes injured.
- 9:09I wanted them healthy. I wanted their legs to be fresh
- 9:13and stable. And that's when they introduced
- 9:14me to the the jail system and they talked a lot about that
- 9:19jail system. And I said, well, I got guys,
- 9:21NFL players training on my track.
- 9:23I got NBA guys training on my track.
- 9:25I need something that's going to be able to handle the absorption
- 9:27of these big guys. And they kept insisting that I
- 9:31look at this jail system and what it would do in regards to
- 9:34protecting my athletes. And I can say that we, you know,
- 9:39Tim and his team had such an amazing, by the time we got to
- 9:42the end of the process, they had such an amazing relationship
- 9:45with us. And it's really seemed kind of
- 9:47like I told you they, they didn't, they didn't tell me
- 9:50about what they had until they knew what I needed.
- 9:53They didn't really just talk about their product.
- 9:55They talked about what my needs were and they they delivered.
- 10:00We've had a lot of kids on our track.
- 10:02We have over 300 kids on our track club.
- 10:05And I can assure you that injury was one of the biggest concerns,
- 10:08especially when dealing with young kids, kids who are
- 10:09overweight, kids who are different levels of
- 10:11conditioning. And I can speak categorically
- 10:14that those have been less and less of a concern.
- 10:18Now, a lot of times when you think about the thicker tracks,
- 10:20you're always concerned as to whether you will have speed.
- 10:24Well, Shikari Richardson ran 10801087 No 1078 on that track.
- 10:31Allison Felix ran 50 point O1 on that track.
- 10:35I think Cherry ran 44 eight. Michael Norman ran 983 on that
- 10:42track. Not to mention all those kids
- 10:44that I talked to you before. So it does perform.
- 10:48But again, just as I started talking to you about what's
- 10:50important with coaching, when you start to look at your
- 10:52facility and we start talking to be about people about your
- 10:55facility, I'd kind of go with the same thing.
- 10:57See if they care. And if they care, then you're
- 11:01going to get a little bit more sincerity.
- 11:03And I don't know only on the product that they provide, but
- 11:05on the service they provide. And I again, I, I cannot say how
- 11:09much we've appreciated the relationship that we've had with
- 11:12record Tan. And again, I've had athletes
- 11:16come from all over the world. The, the young lady who set the
- 11:18world record in the 100 hurdles, She was on that Toby, she was on
- 11:22that track that year. And every I could probably, they
- 11:25probably should get all these videos I've got of people who've
- 11:28come there and have attested about how much they enjoy
- 11:32training on our surface out there.
- 11:34Now it's a combination. I think I try to hug them all
- 11:36and love them all, but I also have to have the product to back
- 11:40it up. So that's why we've kind of
- 11:41partnered with Record Tab. But I appreciate, appreciate you
- 11:44guys. Thank you.
- 11:48OK. Thanks, Greg.
- 11:49Appreciate it very much. Greg is an advocate, obviously,
- 11:54but he's got the. The.
- 11:56Backing of the statistics too, which is important, right?
- 12:00You can talk about it all the time, but until you get those
- 12:02numbers up, feedback, that's really about.
