- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Joseph was a young man, seventeen years old.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: His job was to take care of the sheep and the goats.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Joseph did this work with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and Zilpa.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Bilha and Zilpah were his father's wives.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Joseph told his father about the bad things that his brother did.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Joseph was born at a time when his father Israel was very old, so Israel loved him more than he loved his other sons.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Jacob gave him a special coat, which was long and very beautiful.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: When Joseph's brothers saw that their father loved Joseph more than he loved them, they hated their brother because of this.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: They refused to say nice things to him.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: One time Joseph had a special dream.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Later he told his brothers about this dream, and after that his brothers hated him even more.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Joseph said, I had a dream.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: We were all working in the field tying stacks of wheat together.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Then my stack got up.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: It stood there while all of your stacks of wheat made a circle around mine and bowed down to it.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: His brothers said, Do you think this means you will be a king and rule over us?
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: His brothers hated Joseph more now because of the dreams he had had about them.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Then Joseph had another dream, and he told his brothers about it.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: He said I had another dream.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: I saw the sun, the moon, and eleven stars bowing down to me.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Joseph had also told his father about this dream, but his father criticized him.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: His father said, What kind of dream is this?
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Do you believe that your mother, your brothers, and I will bow down to you?
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Joseph's brothers continued to be jealous of him, but his father thought about all of these things and wondered what they could mean.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: One day Joseph's brothers went to Shechem to care for their father's sheep.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Jacob said to Joseph, Go to Shechem, your brothers are there with my sheep.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Joseph answered, I will go.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: His father said, Go and see if your brothers are safe.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Come back and tell me if my sheep are all fine.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: So Jacob's father sent him from the valley of Hebron to Shechem.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: At Shechem Joseph got lost.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: A man found him wandering in the fields, and the man said, What are you looking for?
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Joseph answered, I am looking for my brothers.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Can you tell me where they are with their sheep?
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: The man said they have already gone away.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: I heard them say that they were going to Dothan.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: So Joseph followed his brothers and found them in Dothan.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Joseph sold into slavery.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Joseph's brothers saw him coming from far away.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: They decided to make a plan to kill him.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: They said to each other, here comes Joseph the dreamer.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: We should kill him now while we can.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: We could throw his body into one of the empty wells and tell our father that a wild animal killed him.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Then we will show them that his dreams are useless.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: But Reuben wanted to save Joseph.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: He said let's not kill him.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: We can put him in a well without hurting him.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Reuben planned to save Joseph and send him back to his father.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: When Joseph came to his brothers, they attacked him and tore off his long and beautiful coat.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Then they threw him into an empty well that was dry.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: While Joseph was in the well, the brothers sat down to eat.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: They looked up and saw a group of traders travelling from Gilead to Egypt.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Their camels were carrying so many different riches and spices.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: So Judah said to his brothers, What profit will we get if we kill our brother and hide his death?
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: We will profit more if we sell him to these traitors.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Then we will not be guilty of killing our own brother.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: The other brothers agreed.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: When the Midianite traders came by, the brothers took Joseph out of the well and sold him to the traitors for twenty pieces of silver.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: The traitors took him to Europe.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Reuben had been gone, but when he came back to the well he saw that Joseph was not there.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: He tore his clothes to show that he was upset.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Reuben went to the brothers and said The boy is not in the well.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: What will I do?
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: The brothers killed the goat and put the goat's blood on Joseph's beautiful coat.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Then the brothers showed the coat to their father, and the brothers said We found this coat.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Is this Joseph's coat?
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: His father saw the coat and knew that it was Joseph's.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: He said Yes, that is his.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Maybe some wild animal has killed him.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: My son Joseph has been eaten by a wild animal.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Jacob was so sorry about his son that he tore his clothes.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Then Jacob put on special clothes to show that he was sad.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: He continued to be sad about his son for a long time.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: All of Jacob's sons and daughters tried to comfort him, but Jacob was never comforted.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: He said, I will be sad about my son until the day I die.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: So Jacob continued to mourn his son Joseph.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: The Midianite traders later sold Joseph in Egypt.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: They sold him to Potiphar, an officer of the king of Egypt, and the captain of his palace guards.
