- 1:10Speaker 2: All right, let's get into it. What's up, guys. This
- 1:15Speaker 2: is coach Alex finn Houton on the Faithful Fitness Podcast.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Our mission is to help you make the most out
- 1:20Speaker 2: of the body God's given you, and I know this
- 1:22Speaker 2: episode is going to help you do just that. I
- 1:24Speaker 2: am joined by my new friend, Miss Leah Fruth. Good morning, sister.
- 1:27Speaker 2: How you doing morning?
- 1:29Speaker 3: I'm doing so well, bright.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Edd and bushy tailed. It looks like, yes, yes, I'm ready.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Before we get into our conversation we've got we're going
- 1:37Speaker 2: to talk about grief and stress, which is actually more
- 1:39Speaker 2: fun than it sounds because it's going to be redeeming conversation.
- 1:42Speaker 2: We're also going to talk about forgiveness and what that
- 1:45Speaker 2: has to do with our health, which which a lot
- 1:47Speaker 2: of people don't understand how that's connected. So I'm excited
- 1:50Speaker 2: to dive into that. But before we get there, we're
- 1:53Speaker 2: we're friends on the front that we like our coffee
- 1:56Speaker 2: and our kombucha. You have kombucha in that cup.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Right now, Yes, homemade, homemade.
- 2:02Speaker 2: What's the flavor? What's what are you going for this?
- 2:04Speaker 4: I just I just put ginger in it, just like yeah, nice,
- 2:09Speaker 4: kindred spirits.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Can you please explain to my audience what kombucha is
- 2:12Speaker 2: in why you like it?
- 2:14Speaker 4: Well, it's just tea, but it's fermented tea, and so
- 2:18Speaker 4: I don't know it just it. I I'm a big
- 2:21Speaker 4: coffee drinker, but my stomach feels so much better when
- 2:23Speaker 4: I don't drink coffee, and so I've just found a love.
- 2:27Speaker 4: But I love all drinks. So like you name it, coffee,
- 2:30Speaker 4: macha tea, kombucha, I love them.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Also, how how long have you been making your own kombucha?
- 2:37Speaker 2: That's a thing.
- 2:37Speaker 4: A little over a year. It's really simple. I did
- 2:41Speaker 4: soured out the whole sourdough thing in twenty twenty, and
- 2:44Speaker 4: that is so much more work than kombucha. Kombucha is
- 2:47Speaker 4: way simpler, I feel like. And I went into it
- 2:50Speaker 4: saying it's fine to be average at some things. That's
- 2:53Speaker 4: why I tell myself. And so I'm an average kombucha maker.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Perfect. I keep it.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Average and it's good and it's a lot cheaper than
- 3:00Speaker 4: the store.
- 3:01Speaker 2: No joke.
- 3:02Speaker 3: That's why I had to make it because I was
- 3:04Speaker 3: like my pocket.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Even dollars for like like twenty ounces, right, yes, yeah,
- 3:08Speaker 2: so I.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Can't do this because I was limiting myself and I
- 3:11Speaker 4: wanted more, but I won't spend that much money.
- 3:13Speaker 2: So no joke. That's that's awesome, very very thrifty of you.
- 3:18Speaker 2: My wife went through the sourdough thing too, and she uh,
- 3:22Speaker 2: I want to say, we had like four years of
- 3:24Speaker 2: sourdough and it got to be like a chore. You know.
- 3:26Speaker 2: I like to run, so so sourdough is great, great
- 3:29Speaker 2: fuel for running in the the the probiotics and whatnot
- 3:33Speaker 2: that come out of that. We're nice to my stomach.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Most breads don't sit well with me, so so it
- 3:38Speaker 2: was great. But after a while it was like, we
- 3:40Speaker 2: have to eat two loaves of bread every like to
- 3:43Speaker 2: justify this, we have to eat two loaves of so
- 3:45Speaker 2: we ended up eating a lot to the chickens and
- 3:47Speaker 2: she was like, I'm over it. So so basically it's
- 3:50Speaker 2: the you have to you have to keep your culture right,
- 3:52Speaker 2: and you have to add it to your your team
- 3:55Speaker 2: mixture and then you it sounds like you flavor with
- 3:58Speaker 2: ginger and then you're good.
- 3:59Speaker 3: It's really easy.
- 4:00Speaker 4: I always have it on my counter fermenting, and then
- 4:03Speaker 4: I bottle it and so I have my three bottles
- 4:06Speaker 4: on my counter and my fermented going and it's it's
- 4:09Speaker 4: really takes like twenty minutes at a time, but so awesome.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Does anybody else in your house drink your kombucher. Is
- 4:14Speaker 2: this just I'm.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Pretty stingy about it. I'm like, you can only have
- 4:20Speaker 4: a little bit. But my youngest really loves it, and
- 4:23Speaker 4: so he's always.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Sneaking, So that's hilarious. That's like, then I.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Feel bad because I'm like, I should be more givving
- 4:31Speaker 3: with it.
- 4:31Speaker 2: But hey man, and you made it. You're like, I
- 4:34Speaker 2: bet your youngest could figure it out, Like if you
- 4:36Speaker 2: taught him, he probably a little batch.
- 4:38Speaker 3: He probably could.
- 4:41Speaker 2: That's awesome. Well, I'm so glad that we get to
- 4:43Speaker 2: have this conversation. And to those listening, if you haven't
- 4:46Speaker 2: tried kombucha and you're not making your own kombucha, it's
- 4:49Speaker 2: actually got some very good research around consuming fermented foods.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Kombucha is one of them. You can have all kinds
- 4:56Speaker 2: of other fermented foods, but fermented foods are really powerful
- 4:59Speaker 2: for your microbiome and can help your immune system. Sounds
- 5:03Speaker 2: like it helps your stomach leah, So that's awesome. And
- 5:07Speaker 2: I find that if you make something, especially it's cost effective,
- 5:13Speaker 2: but if you make something, you tend to enjoy it
- 5:16Speaker 2: more and it brings an element of like peace and
- 5:19Speaker 2: accomplishment to the process as opposed to just picking it
- 5:22Speaker 2: up off the store shelf and you know, not having
- 5:24Speaker 2: to worry about what ingredients are in it.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, and absolutely less sugar too in it too,
- 5:29Speaker 4: so that's.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Yeah, my store bought ones probably like thirty grims of
- 5:34Speaker 2: sugar is serving there's a great post workout, but not
- 5:37Speaker 2: it's general good for okay. So so for our audience,
- 5:41Speaker 2: you're a mom, you are a fitness instructor, you are
- 5:45Speaker 2: a health coach. You are really passionate about helping individuals
- 5:49Speaker 2: find freedom from stress, from grief, and from the things
- 5:54Speaker 2: that ail our bodies in well, in just about every respect. Right.
- 6:00Speaker 2: So I want to dial in on something that you said.
- 6:03Speaker 2: We're going to talk about stress, We're going to talk
- 6:04Speaker 2: about grief, We're going to talk about fitness as worship
- 6:07Speaker 2: and stewardship. I want to talk about something that you
- 6:09Speaker 2: said in our in preparation for interview, and you said
- 6:12Speaker 2: something along these lines. I don't want to put words
- 6:14Speaker 2: in your mouth, so if I need to correct it,
- 6:16Speaker 2: please please help me hear you said. I want to
- 6:20Speaker 2: be able to talk about forgiveness because many people don't
- 6:24Speaker 2: understand what this has to do with their health and
- 6:27Speaker 2: fitness journey. So that's a very powerful statement. It's also
- 6:33Speaker 2: an odd statement, not bad odd, but like good odd,
- 6:36Speaker 2: like huh. There might be something too that, Leah, can
- 6:39Speaker 2: you talk to me about in your time as a
- 6:42Speaker 2: fitness instructor and health coach are what are some of
- 6:46Speaker 2: the ways you're noticing forgiveness as a starting point or
- 6:50Speaker 2: at least a necessary place in somebody's health and fitness journey.
- 6:55Speaker 2: What are you noticing that makes you makes you connect
- 6:58Speaker 2: the two?
- 6:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like so many of my clients come
- 7:03Speaker 4: in and like my last client, for example, she came
- 7:06Speaker 4: in saying she was so angry all the time, and
- 7:09Speaker 4: she didn't like it because she says, I'm not an
- 7:11Speaker 4: angry person, but she has two kids and every single
- 7:13Speaker 4: thing is just setting her off, you know, and she
- 7:17Speaker 4: didn't like it. When we have our first session, I
- 7:20Speaker 4: always have a first session getting to know their story,
- 7:22Speaker 4: and then by the second I always offer forgiveness as
- 7:27Speaker 4: our second option. And the people, the clients that grab
- 7:31Speaker 4: hold of that and are saying, yeah, I need to
- 7:33Speaker 4: forgive someone. That's one of my first questions in their paperwork.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Who do you need to forgive? Is there anyone in
- 7:38Speaker 4: your life you need to forgive. Everybody always has somebody,
- 7:42Speaker 4: you know, if they're willing to admit it. And usually
- 7:44Speaker 4: they're not just little things. They're huge, huge moments in
- 7:48Speaker 4: their life, traumas and hurts and pains, and so when
- 7:53Speaker 4: you're not willing to when you're holding on to all
- 7:55Speaker 4: that and you're not willing to let it go, and
- 7:58Speaker 4: that's not forgiveness is ever saying.
- 8:00Speaker 3: What they did was right or it was okay.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Even it's saying I give that to Jesus to handle.
- 8:06Speaker 3: He's got it. It's not on me anymore. I can
- 8:10Speaker 3: let that go.
- 8:10Speaker 4: When you let when you let that go in that way,
- 8:13Speaker 4: it's it frees you up so much to live fully again.
- 8:18Speaker 4: It frees you up to do the things they're looking for.
- 8:21Speaker 4: They're coming in for health coaching, saying I want to
- 8:23Speaker 4: move my body, I want to wake up earlier, I
- 8:25Speaker 4: want to be with Jesus more, I.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Want to eat better.
- 8:28Speaker 4: But they have they're holding onto this for years, and
- 8:32Speaker 4: once you let it go, it's unbelievable that it's like
- 8:37Speaker 4: the thing that supersede super speeds, like it's in the
- 8:42Speaker 4: health journey. It is so much quicker than when people
- 8:44Speaker 4: are like I I don't know if I want to
- 8:47Speaker 4: go there. It's a slower process. But these people when
- 8:50Speaker 4: they come in and they forgive. By the next session
- 8:53Speaker 4: that lady was hearing from God for the first time,
- 8:55Speaker 4: she was waking up, wanting to do some just be
- 8:59Speaker 4: still time. She started moving her body. Within eight weeks
- 9:02Speaker 4: she was like a totally different person. And all we
- 9:05Speaker 4: did is meet with Jesus most of the time. So
- 9:08Speaker 4: it's just forgiveness is how we were designed. It's it
- 9:15Speaker 4: I think we forget sometimes. It's what Jesus came for.
- 9:18Speaker 4: It's was his whole mission, is like forgiving us and
- 9:23Speaker 4: us receiving forgiveness from him, and he called us to forgive.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Jesus designed us to live healthy, and that was one
- 9:31Speaker 4: of his secrets I think he gave us is forgive,
- 9:35Speaker 4: be quick to forgive, and we would live better.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Yeah, our lives right.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a there's a couple places in scripture, so
- 9:45Speaker 2: you know, for those who are familiar with the Gospels,
- 9:47Speaker 2: I highly recommend reading the Sermon on the Mount that's
- 9:50Speaker 2: in Matthew chapter five, six and seven, and in the
- 9:55Speaker 2: amount of times that Christ talks about forgiveness in that
- 9:58Speaker 2: sermon is pretty powerful given that it's it's such a
- 10:02Speaker 2: it's such an amazing sermon all the way across, and
- 10:04Speaker 2: he addresses so many issues. But but forgiveness is a
- 10:07Speaker 2: recurring theme. If I'm not mistaken, it's there that he says,
- 10:11Speaker 2: when you have a gift to give to God, so
- 10:13Speaker 2: you bring your gift to the altar. When you notice
- 10:16Speaker 2: in your heart that you have something against your brother,
- 10:20Speaker 2: you have, then leave your gift. In other words, don't
- 10:23Speaker 2: even try to give it to God. Don't even try
- 10:25Speaker 2: to give your offering. Don't even try to bring your
- 10:27Speaker 2: worship to God. Go go make peace with your brother,
- 10:32Speaker 2: Go finish that conflict, Go forgive, and then come back
- 10:36Speaker 2: and give your your offering to God. And it's such
- 10:39Speaker 2: a to me, that's such a poignant We don't have
- 10:43Speaker 2: temples anymore, or I mean most most aspects of Christian
- 10:46Speaker 2: they don't have temples anymore. Not many of us are
- 10:48Speaker 2: bringing our gifts to an altar. Through the Holy Spirit
- 10:52Speaker 2: and following Christ, we have an opportunity every every day
- 10:55Speaker 2: to bring our worship to God and worship Him in
- 10:57Speaker 2: spirit and in truth. But that is so poignant command.
- 11:01Speaker 2: He's not suggesting it. He said to do it. It's
- 11:04Speaker 2: such a poignant command. Hey, hey, if if you have
- 11:07Speaker 2: something to give to God, if you have worship to
- 11:09Speaker 2: offer to God, if if you want, if you want
- 11:12Speaker 2: to be close to God, then before you do anything
- 11:16Speaker 2: you need to you need to deal with this, this
- 11:18Speaker 2: conflict in your heart and your mind against somebody else
- 11:22Speaker 2: and what like. That's if you live that out. That
- 11:29Speaker 2: is quite the command, because you said, hey, when you
- 11:32Speaker 2: write stuff down, when when people when people report that
- 11:34Speaker 2: in your sessions, everybody's got something and it might be
- 11:38Speaker 2: way back in the past, and it might be big,
- 11:41Speaker 2: deep and dark, and we can talk about bitter roots
- 11:43Speaker 2: and bitter fruits and all that stuff. But like, like
- 11:46Speaker 2: I'm a dad and I'm a husband and I'm a
- 11:49Speaker 2: business owner. Stuff happens every day that I need to
- 11:54Speaker 2: forgive and I'm not perfect. I need to be forgiven about.
- 11:58Speaker 2: And so that's a that's a thing that if I
- 12:03Speaker 2: if I don't, if I don't give it up, if
- 12:05Speaker 2: I don't let it go, if I don't, if I
- 12:07Speaker 2: don't actively go through the process of shedding the weight
- 12:11Speaker 2: that I accumulate and unforgiven masses over time, yes, I
- 12:16Speaker 2: will carry that thing in my spirit and that shows
- 12:20Speaker 2: up in the body.
- 12:21Speaker 4: And like if you're if you haven't forgiven things weigh
- 12:25Speaker 4: in the past, it seems to be that you're just
- 12:27Speaker 4: letting it all add up and you're not forgiving the
- 12:29Speaker 4: daily things either, And that just I mean, think of
- 12:33Speaker 4: carrying around all that weight all the time and trying
- 12:35Speaker 4: to live this hard life that it already is. It
- 12:40Speaker 4: stops you and gets you stuck a lot of times.
- 12:43Speaker 4: And also it's really hard to explain what forgiveness does
- 12:46Speaker 4: because it's like something you can't hold on to. You
- 12:49Speaker 4: can't it's a spiritual thing that makes no sense really.
- 12:52Speaker 4: But when I walk people through how to forgive because
- 12:56Speaker 4: we're not taught how to forgive either, it's not just
- 12:58Speaker 4: like I forgive them and you're good. I mean I
- 13:01Speaker 4: have them visualize the person. I have them go through
- 13:05Speaker 4: this whole visualization process and name every single thing that
- 13:08Speaker 4: person did to them. So there's naming it out loud,
- 13:12Speaker 4: then saying I forgive you and handing them off to
- 13:16Speaker 4: Jesus and saying it's your And it's very powerful, but
- 13:20Speaker 4: you can't explain it until you do it right.
- 13:22Speaker 3: And the freedom that it brings.
- 13:24Speaker 4: And I mean I years ago, sat down one day
- 13:29Speaker 4: before I did any of this health coaching and felt
- 13:32Speaker 4: the Lord convicting me of having to forgive people. And
- 13:35Speaker 4: I thought it was like one person, and he told
- 13:37Speaker 4: me to make a list. I started making a list
- 13:39Speaker 4: and it was a page long, and I was.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Like, I was shocked.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Shocked, but it brought so much healing to start going, Okay,
- 13:47Speaker 4: I'm holding this stuff against all these people.
- 13:50Speaker 3: That's exhausting.
- 13:52Speaker 2: That's exhausting and an what an honest what an honest exercise.
- 13:57Speaker 2: It's being honest with yourself. It's also being honest with God.
- 14:01Speaker 2: And it's not like you said. It's not saying it
- 14:03Speaker 2: doesn't matter. It's not saying like what they did wasn't
- 14:05Speaker 2: wasn't painful or hurtful or it's not. It's not absolving
- 14:09Speaker 2: the action. It's saying that that As for me and
- 14:13Speaker 2: my part, I'm not going to hold onto this anymore.
- 14:16Speaker 2: It makes me think of do you like to garden?
- 14:18Speaker 2: Have you ever kept a garden?
- 14:20Speaker 3: Not great at it?
- 14:20Speaker 2: Not not great at it? Much much more into the
- 14:22Speaker 2: kombucha and sourdough thing. Yeah, So it makes me think
- 14:25Speaker 2: of a garden. I like to garden, or I like
- 14:27Speaker 2: to think I like to garden. It's not my favorite
- 14:29Speaker 2: thing to do. But if I have a garden and
- 14:31Speaker 2: I'm trying to grow some tomatoes, which are much harder
- 14:33Speaker 2: than it sounds, by the way, If I'm trying to
- 14:36Speaker 2: grow some tomatoes and I've got these weeds springing up
- 14:39Speaker 2: in my planner boxes, the weeds steal nutrients from the
- 14:44Speaker 2: good plant, right, And if I have a bunch of
- 14:46Speaker 2: weeds stealing nutrients from the good plant, the good plant
- 14:49Speaker 2: is going to be well, it's going to be stunted
- 14:51Speaker 2: and its growth. There's only so much nutrients to go
- 14:53Speaker 2: around in the soil, and sometimes the weeds can can
- 14:56Speaker 2: choke it out, and sometimes the weeds can overshadow it
- 14:58Speaker 2: and all that, and so so if I let those
- 15:01Speaker 2: weeds accumulate, my good fruit won't grow. And forgiveness is
- 15:06Speaker 2: kind of like that. It's like, throughout your life, you're
- 15:08Speaker 2: going to have these little little things spring up that
- 15:11Speaker 2: can steal the nutrients from the good plant of your life,
- 15:14Speaker 2: from the good soil of your heart and your mind.
- 15:17Speaker 2: And when you remove those weeds, then you well, you're
- 15:21Speaker 2: kind of free. You're not carrying it around anymore. You
- 15:23Speaker 2: you've got all the nutrients and goodness that you need
- 15:26Speaker 2: in the soil of your life. But to carry this
- 15:28Speaker 2: metaphor just a little farther, if I pull the if
- 15:31Speaker 2: I pull the top of the weed out, weed whack them. Yeah,
- 15:34Speaker 2: if I we whack them and I don't get the root,
- 15:36Speaker 2: it doesn't fix it. They'll they'll they'll spring back up,
- 15:40Speaker 2: sometimes even stronger than before. Right. And so what you're
- 15:45Speaker 2: talking about there is is actually getting the root. You
- 15:48Speaker 2: define the whole thing, and you you don't pull any
- 15:52Speaker 2: punches like this is what happened, this is how it hurt.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Here are all the ways it affected my life. Here,
- 15:58Speaker 2: here's here's the at that whole root of that weed.
- 16:02Speaker 2: And then you can pull it out and go here
- 16:04Speaker 2: you go all this stuff. God, I'm not holding on
- 16:06Speaker 2: to do it anymore. That's your weed to deal with.
- 16:09Speaker 2: It's out of the garden of my life. Do you
- 16:12Speaker 2: have anything to add to that? I think that's a
- 16:14Speaker 2: good visual for what you're saying, two.
- 16:16Speaker 4: Things and handing them off to Jesus, like visualizing giving
- 16:19Speaker 4: those people to Jesus, because that's powerful in itself too.
- 16:22Speaker 4: It's saying not only is he a just God and
- 16:25Speaker 4: he can handle things that have happened to you wrongily.
- 16:28Speaker 4: But also that you can say he can do a
- 16:31Speaker 4: miracle in that person too, and even he can, he
- 16:34Speaker 4: can take care of that person and pray that they
- 16:38Speaker 4: see Jesus, you know.
- 16:40Speaker 3: So that is huge.
- 16:41Speaker 4: And also you can do this alone one hundred percent.
- 16:44Speaker 4: You can do this you and God is beautiful that way.
- 16:46Speaker 4: But I also found power in having another person there
- 16:49Speaker 4: because when you're naming those things out loud, someone's there
- 16:52Speaker 4: to hear you and say that's valid, like that is real,
- 16:56Speaker 4: And so that matters because so many things are holding
- 16:58Speaker 4: on the inside that no one ever knows, you know.
- 17:02Speaker 4: And also it can be things in your life that
- 17:04Speaker 4: I say often. If you felt it was true, it's
- 17:07Speaker 4: true in this moment. So if you felt like someone
- 17:10Speaker 4: looked at you funny and things awful of you, you know,
- 17:13Speaker 4: that's a simple thing. But if you felt it was true,
- 17:16Speaker 4: it's true for you. And so that's not going out
- 17:19Speaker 4: and telling people, you know, it's when you're forgiving someone,
- 17:23Speaker 4: it's between you and God and if you feel it,
- 17:27Speaker 4: you're holding onto it, so it's true for you.
- 17:29Speaker 2: It's like so my son, my son has loose ankles,
- 17:33Speaker 2: like I do, and he can step off a sidewalk
- 17:37Speaker 2: or something and roll it. Poor guy. So I've been
- 17:40Speaker 2: through this in my life. I'm going to get to
- 17:42Speaker 2: help him walk through this well, no pun intended, but
- 17:45Speaker 2: so he rolls his ankle, and at first, as a dad,
- 17:50Speaker 2: I'm like, dude, get up, like dust yourself off, stop crying,
- 17:54Speaker 2: like what's wrong with you? This happens all the time,
- 17:56Speaker 2: because I've lived through almost forty years of this issue
- 18:00Speaker 2: you in myself. But but what I understood in my
- 18:04Speaker 2: life was that just because there was a time in
- 18:07Speaker 2: my life where I felt like my pain didn't matter
- 18:09Speaker 2: to anybody else doesn't mean that my pain doesn't matter.
- 18:12Speaker 2: And that's not something I should project on my own children.
- 18:15Speaker 2: I need to teach him your pain matters, Like what
- 18:19Speaker 2: you what you just wrestle with? That hurts man, It's
- 18:22Speaker 2: it's awful. I hate that for you. I'm here for you,
- 18:25Speaker 2: and and here's the deal. Your pain matters. But as
- 18:28Speaker 2: your dad, I care so much that this doesn't keep
- 18:31Speaker 2: you from living your life to your fullest right. And
- 18:34Speaker 2: that's the thing about forgiveness is acknowledging, Hey, my pain matters.
- 18:37Speaker 2: This suffering was real, This was difficult and hard at
- 18:41Speaker 2: the same time. I don't need to let that be
- 18:44Speaker 2: what defines my life. I don't need to let that
- 18:46Speaker 2: be what eats at me on the inside. I don't
- 18:48Speaker 2: need that to take up any any bandwidth up here.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I don't need to hold on to it in my spirit.
- 18:54Speaker 2: And this makes me. It reminds me of what Jesus
- 18:57Speaker 2: said about forgiveness and judgment as well. He's but if
- 19:00Speaker 2: we don't forgive the wrongs done to us, then our
- 19:04Speaker 2: father in heaven will not forgive us of the wrongs
- 19:09Speaker 2: we've done we've done to him. And he also goes
- 19:13Speaker 2: on to say judge not lest you be judged. That
- 19:15Speaker 2: doesn't mean don't judge. You got to finish the sentence
- 19:18Speaker 2: for whatever judgment we put on somebody else. That is
- 19:22Speaker 2: the that is the litmus test, that's the judgment that
- 19:25Speaker 2: will be put on us. So if we're willing to forgive,
- 19:29Speaker 2: then what God does for us is he gives that
- 19:32Speaker 2: same level of forgiveness and that same love to us
- 19:37Speaker 2: that we're willing to send extend to other people. And
- 19:39Speaker 2: so I think that's a wonderful thing to start with
- 19:42Speaker 2: in your practice. I'm so grateful that you do it,
- 19:44Speaker 2: and I imagine that the individuals that you work with
- 19:47Speaker 2: from a health coaching perspective didn't know they were coming
- 19:50Speaker 2: to you for that at first, but then weeks after
- 19:54Speaker 2: they're like, man, this is wonderful.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Yeah they always, yeah, it's always.
- 20:01Speaker 4: You have to be really gentle in that, right, but
- 20:03Speaker 4: it's but there when they go for it, they're amazed,
- 20:07Speaker 4: you know.
- 20:08Speaker 3: And these people a.
- 20:09Speaker 4: Lot of like my last one, had gone to a
- 20:11Speaker 4: bunch of different health coaches and felt like she's gotten nowhere,
- 20:15Speaker 4: you know, but it wasn't. It wasn't just putting a
- 20:17Speaker 4: program on her. It was the inside work that needed health.
- 20:22Speaker 4: And our health is whole person, right, That's how I
- 20:24Speaker 4: approach it. It's not just the body, but it's not
- 20:27Speaker 4: without the body.
- 20:27Speaker 2: So well, so, so you said something there I have
- 20:33Speaker 2: I have a guy in my mind. There there are
- 20:34Speaker 2: some people that I've worked with in my career. I'm
- 20:36Speaker 2: so happy I got to help them, and and they
- 20:39Speaker 2: they've done amazing things, and their bodies and their minds
- 20:41Speaker 2: and their spirits have have shifted and changed, and I'm
- 20:44Speaker 2: so proud and excited about that. But there are some
- 20:47Speaker 2: people in my journey that I wasn't able to help
- 20:50Speaker 2: that that I didn't have the tools, I wasn't wise enough,
- 20:53Speaker 2: I wasn't mature enough. Whatever the case was, that that
- 20:56Speaker 2: when when I started working with them, I didn't understand
- 20:58Speaker 2: how deep things went. So so this is probably a
- 21:01Speaker 2: decade ago now, but but I remember working with a
- 21:04Speaker 2: guy who was really wrestling with He would call it
- 21:08Speaker 2: food addiction. Looking back on it, what I would say
- 21:11Speaker 2: is there was there was a numbing mechanism for him
- 21:14Speaker 2: that he was using food to cover up. You know,
- 21:18Speaker 2: there was pain, there was suffering, it was difficulty, resentment,
- 21:21Speaker 2: and he was using food to regulate himself when the
- 21:24Speaker 2: day was overwhelming, when things were hard, when he was angry,
- 21:27Speaker 2: whatever he was, he was, you know, digging into recee
- 21:30Speaker 2: cups and stuff. So you know, in the infinite wisdom
- 21:33Speaker 2: of an of a health coach that doesn't understand me. Obviously,
- 21:41Speaker 2: all you have to do is cut out sugar, dude,
- 21:42Speaker 2: Like that's no problem. Like he could just stop beating
- 21:45Speaker 2: sugar like, which, if you're not wrestling with that sounds
- 21:50Speaker 2: very easy. Okay, I guess I'll cut out the recy cups.
- 21:53Speaker 2: But but for him, this was actually way way deeper.
- 21:56Speaker 2: This had. This had a lot to do with with
- 21:58Speaker 2: things that that came out in our sessions. You know,
- 22:01Speaker 2: we're working out and stuff, and somehow we would end
- 22:04Speaker 2: up talking about the things his brother did to him
- 22:06Speaker 2: when he was young, or the things his his father
- 22:10Speaker 2: wasn't there for that he was frustrated about, and the
- 22:12Speaker 2: things that he was failings as a father and a husband.
- 22:16Speaker 2: It was like, oh my gosh, no, wonder all you
- 22:19Speaker 2: want to do is eat recy cups because that sounds
- 22:21Speaker 2: way easier. It sounds way easier than digging into all
- 22:25Speaker 2: this pain. But easy he's not good. Easy doesn't mean
- 22:30Speaker 2: it's good. It's it's an indication that something is wrong.
- 22:34Speaker 2: And I want to, you know, tell our audience here
- 22:37Speaker 2: if you find yourself wrestling with behaviors that that from
- 22:43Speaker 2: a health perspective, you know aren't good, but you can't
- 22:46Speaker 2: stop doing them. I would love, I would love for
- 22:49Speaker 2: you to begin exploring what Lee and I have been
- 22:52Speaker 2: talking about here, which is is there anything that I
- 22:55Speaker 2: need to forgive somebody of because I don't need to
- 22:59Speaker 2: hold that anymore. You got enough working against you. Don't
- 23:02Speaker 2: let this be one of the things. Right, Do you
- 23:05Speaker 2: have anything you'd like to address to individuals who are
- 23:07Speaker 2: wrestling with similar.
- 23:08Speaker 4: And also not just stopping things from doing. If you
- 23:11Speaker 4: know all the right things to do and you can't
- 23:14Speaker 4: do them like they're exhausted, that's what I find a
- 23:17Speaker 4: lot of people come to me like, I know all
- 23:19Speaker 4: the things, we have so much information, we know what
- 23:22Speaker 4: we have to do, but you're not doing them like
- 23:26Speaker 4: there's usually more there, you know, and six weeks of
- 23:30Speaker 4: pushing yourself doing all the right things is not going
- 23:34Speaker 4: to be it either. In the long run, you want things.
- 23:37Speaker 4: If you do the deep inner work, you're going to
- 23:39Speaker 4: be able to sustain your health and do it and enjoy.
- 23:43Speaker 2: It too, well said, well said, thank you for that.
- 23:47Speaker 2: I think that's that's ex fuent. Now, this wisdom is
- 23:50Speaker 2: not easy to come by. I know it says it
- 23:52Speaker 2: right in scripture. I know it says it. But just
- 23:54Speaker 2: because it says it doesn't mean we always do it
- 23:56Speaker 2: and doesn't mean we always understand it right. So so
- 24:00Speaker 2: this is hard one wisdom on your part, I imagine,
- 24:03Speaker 2: And and so so that said, can can you talk
- 24:06Speaker 2: to me about how you came to understand this for yourself?
- 24:10Speaker 2: I understand that there were there was a season of stress.
- 24:13Speaker 2: There is a season of grief and whatnot. But but
- 24:15Speaker 2: for you, this this idea of forgiveness and overcoming stress
- 24:20Speaker 2: and overcoming grief. This is deep to your story. Do
- 24:23Speaker 2: you know? Actually fun fun fact. Do you know what
- 24:25Speaker 2: your name means?
- 24:28Speaker 3: I weary one, doesn't it?
- 24:30Speaker 2: Yeah? So, so there's two translations, so that the Hebrew.
- 24:33Speaker 2: The Hebrew, like if you translate Leah literally means weary
- 24:37Speaker 2: one or a grieved one. Wow, but you could take that.
- 24:42Speaker 2: That sounds right, you know, but but check it out.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Check it out because because you can take a name
- 24:49Speaker 2: to be a to tell you what you are, or
- 24:53Speaker 2: you can take a name to understand who you'll become.
- 24:56Speaker 2: And and so when when you translate it that way,
- 24:59Speaker 2: it's one who who knows how to deal with grief
- 25:02Speaker 2: and weariness? Right like whoa Like that's so great because
- 25:07Speaker 2: it was so funny when when you when you put
- 25:09Speaker 2: that in our interview, I was like, what, Like I
- 25:13Speaker 2: couldn't have planned this any better. Your name is Leah,
- 25:15Speaker 2: did you know? Like that means the one who's.
- 25:16Speaker 3: I never really put it together the way you just worded.
- 25:19Speaker 2: So another another boom moviment. But but so so this
- 25:23Speaker 2: is hard one wisdom. You have dealt with grief, you
- 25:26Speaker 2: have dealt with stress, You've dealt with forgiveness. So can
- 25:28Speaker 2: you can you tell me a bit about in your
- 25:31Speaker 2: story how how God taught you that this was a
- 25:34Speaker 2: part of the health and fitness of your body.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Yeah, well, everything I've learned, I feel like, first I
- 25:41Speaker 4: learned in real life. Uh so, Yeah, everything is hard
- 25:46Speaker 4: fought and everything that I come with for health coaching
- 25:49Speaker 4: is experienced. So I will start like forward. I the
- 25:55Speaker 4: forgiveness piece, I feel like came in when I the
- 26:02Speaker 4: world was just a mess, right, and I had lots
- 26:05Speaker 4: going on, hadwough yeah, even tower though that was part
- 26:10Speaker 4: of the like stress, probably working out the sourdough. But
- 26:14Speaker 4: we had a lot of church. Our church sort of
- 26:17Speaker 4: exploded at the same time, a lot of church hurt.
- 26:22Speaker 4: And that's in every relationship. I live in a small
- 26:24Speaker 4: town and so every relationship was wrecked in some way
- 26:30Speaker 4: by that close friends, family, all sorts of things. And
- 26:33Speaker 4: so that's what started the forgiveness going, like I I
- 26:37Speaker 4: can't walk around with this weight every day. I'm gonna
- 26:41Speaker 4: these are people I see every day, these are people
- 26:45Speaker 4: I'm going to live with, you know, whether we and
- 26:48Speaker 4: we disagree on things, and people stayed and people left,
- 26:53Speaker 4: and so that started it. But then in that process,
- 26:56Speaker 4: I learned that there was so many people from my
- 27:01Speaker 4: entire growing up years that I had never forgiven and
- 27:05Speaker 4: I was holding all of that, and.
- 27:09Speaker 3: So that was the process.
- 27:10Speaker 4: That's what started, and it really took me on a
- 27:14Speaker 4: greater journey of healing that I see that as like
- 27:17Speaker 4: the pinpoint. But then going through so many other things
- 27:21Speaker 4: with wise people helped me grow in so many ways
- 27:24Speaker 4: after that. But my story, I lost my dad when
- 27:29Speaker 4: I was ten. He was sick for two years with
- 27:33Speaker 4: a heart disease that he had a heart transplant, and
- 27:35Speaker 4: so he was in the hospital a lot those two years.
- 27:39Speaker 4: So I mean I had all that weight as a
- 27:41Speaker 4: ten year old of feeling like I was taking care
- 27:45Speaker 4: of my siblings. I had two other siblings at the time.
- 27:47Speaker 4: So I'm one that takes on everybody's grief too. Is
- 27:53Speaker 4: what happens a lot in my life. I take on
- 27:55Speaker 4: one make everybody else feel okay, even though I'm not.
- 27:58Speaker 3: I'll say I'm good. I'm good.
- 27:59Speaker 4: I got everybody else. But my mom quickly remarried and
- 28:03Speaker 4: we moved to a new Town and they had four boys,
- 28:05Speaker 4: and so I was the oldest of seven very quickly.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Oh my goodness.
- 28:08Speaker 4: Yeah, and so here I am caring for more but
- 28:11Speaker 4: also never processing my pain about my dad and so
- 28:14Speaker 4: my body. Looking back now, I'm like, doctors knew what
- 28:19Speaker 4: they knew at the time, but there's so many things
- 28:22Speaker 4: that were happening in my body that I couldn't explain.
- 28:25Speaker 4: And I had mono multiple times, so of course they
- 28:28Speaker 4: took my tonsils out, and then I had team j
- 28:31Speaker 4: problems where I was so bad i'd go through physical
- 28:34Speaker 4: therapy because my jaw with her. In high school, I
- 28:37Speaker 4: had stomach issues severely and like all these things that
- 28:42Speaker 4: they would dislabel stress, but it was just unprocessed grief
- 28:46Speaker 4: and carrying a lot of weight that I just had
- 28:51Speaker 4: nowhere to go with, you know, into college where my
- 28:55Speaker 4: one my hands completely went numb in college and they
- 28:59Speaker 4: can't figure out ended up just being my muscles getting
- 29:02Speaker 4: so tight that it was constricting my nerves.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Can I pause your story for the second? I want,
- 29:08Speaker 2: I want you to continue, but but this is this
- 29:11Speaker 2: So I do a lot of work in children's ministry.
- 29:13Speaker 2: It's not like my primary job or anything is just
- 29:16Speaker 2: a volunteer thing I think is important in our community,
- 29:19Speaker 2: and my wife does as well. And we were we
- 29:22Speaker 2: were just we were just teaching our Wednesday night, like
- 29:26Speaker 2: it's like we call halftime ministry, but they dance and
- 29:28Speaker 2: they sing and they play kickball and then we go
- 29:30Speaker 2: through go through scripture together. And this little girl, she's
- 29:33Speaker 2: in third grade. She she came up to my wife
- 29:35Speaker 2: and she's just bawling, like and we're like, oh, no,
- 29:37Speaker 2: what happened? You know, do you fall on the sidewalk
- 29:40Speaker 2: or whatever? You know, I'm coaching kickball over here. I
- 29:42Speaker 2: don't I don't know what's going on. I'm just trying
- 29:44Speaker 2: to make sure the fourth graders don't yell at the
- 29:45Speaker 2: first graders to me, so they get really competitive. And
- 29:49Speaker 2: she's just bawling and I and my wife's like, what's
- 29:51Speaker 2: what's going on, sweetheart? And she said, I miss my grandma.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Well her grandma died, you know, two months ago, and
- 29:57Speaker 2: and she was just bawling. And my wife said she
- 30:02Speaker 2: walked her through kind of do you know what grief is, sweetheart?
- 30:05Speaker 2: Do you understand? She's like, I don't know why, I
- 30:07Speaker 2: don't want to and she's like no, honey, you're grieving
- 30:11Speaker 2: right now and that's okay. And she was explaining to her,
- 30:14Speaker 2: you know, I lost my grandma, I lost my grandpa,
- 30:17Speaker 2: I lost my dad. And she was explaining it to
- 30:19Speaker 2: this to this young girl, and she just let her
- 30:21Speaker 2: talk and then prayed with her and stuff, and she goes, honey,
- 30:23Speaker 2: it's going to get easier, but it's okay to grieve.
- 30:26Speaker 2: It's okay. It's okay for this to be a thing.
- 30:28Speaker 2: And she was saying, like, how many kids get the
- 30:32Speaker 2: opportunity for somebody to just like tell them what they're
- 30:36Speaker 2: going through, Because kids grief. I don't care if you're
- 30:38Speaker 2: in I don't care if you're four years old or
- 30:40Speaker 2: if you're ten years old. Your body and your mind
- 30:43Speaker 2: go through the process of grief that adults do, but
- 30:46Speaker 2: most of the time you don't understand what's happening. And
- 30:49Speaker 2: so you're right. It's internalized as anxiety, it's internalized as stress,
- 30:53Speaker 2: and when you internalize that much emotion and feeling, it's
- 30:58Speaker 2: going to come out in ways that are almost impossible
- 31:03Speaker 2: to explain, like TMJA or your arm going numb, and
- 31:10Speaker 2: it affects our immune systems. We're learning that that grief
- 31:12Speaker 2: affects our immune system. So everything you're saying is it's
- 31:16Speaker 2: just so like it makes me heartbroken for children to
- 31:21Speaker 2: help them and double down on making sure that they
- 31:23Speaker 2: can process their grief and whatnot. But it also makes
- 31:26Speaker 2: me heartbroken for unhealed adults who went through this stuff
- 31:32Speaker 2: and then well kept struggling.
- 31:35Speaker 4: As if I just keep treating the body, which is
- 31:38Speaker 4: good and needed, but also if you don't, like we said,
- 31:42Speaker 4: take care of all the inside stuff, it's just going
- 31:44Speaker 4: to keep going.
- 31:46Speaker 2: It's going to keep piling up. It's going to keep
- 31:48Speaker 2: piling up. So I interrupted you at college, but but
- 31:51Speaker 2: it's so powerful and important, please continue.
- 31:54Speaker 4: Yeah, it just keeps going. So I got married to
- 31:58Speaker 4: my high school sweetheart. We moved back home to our hometown.
- 32:02Speaker 4: Life was good.
- 32:03Speaker 2: You know.
- 32:04Speaker 4: I have my little siblings, So the youngest are in
- 32:06Speaker 4: second grade at the time, you know, so we're spending
- 32:08Speaker 4: lots of time with them. When we got married, they're
- 32:10Speaker 4: in second grade. So wow, we're fifteen years apart so
- 32:14Speaker 4: from the youngest. And so I had my first child
- 32:17Speaker 4: when I was twenty six. I honestly remember him being
- 32:21Speaker 4: nine months old and being like life because of what
- 32:24Speaker 4: I had gone through. I was like, a life is
- 32:26Speaker 4: too good right now, Something's going to happen. That was
- 32:29Speaker 4: the mentality that I had, and real like I didn't
- 32:32Speaker 4: just say that as like, oh, something's gonna no, like
- 32:34Speaker 4: I like felt it. And then it proved true, which
- 32:37Speaker 4: is like the worst. You know. Shortly after, my mom
- 32:41Speaker 4: got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and so that diagnosis right away,
- 32:45Speaker 4: you just it's you know, it's gonna be death, you know,
- 32:49Speaker 4: like they're most likely. And so here I am new mom,
- 32:54Speaker 4: running a business, trying to take care of my siblings,
- 32:59Speaker 4: and trying to take care of my mom, who was
- 33:01Speaker 4: my best friend at the time. And she lived a
- 33:03Speaker 4: year after which we were very fortunate for that year,
- 33:06Speaker 4: but it was the year of pure exhaust I was
- 33:09Speaker 4: never I mean I would cry, but like I was
- 33:12Speaker 4: never processing any of my own stuff.
- 33:14Speaker 3: I was just taking care of everybody else.
- 33:16Speaker 2: There was too much care of you.
- 33:19Speaker 4: To take care of ye, right, So when she died,
- 33:22Speaker 4: then I'm still Now I'm really trying to take care
- 33:24Speaker 4: of my brothers because they're in middle school and early
- 33:26Speaker 4: high school and I'm trying to be there for them
- 33:30Speaker 4: and take have another kid, you know, and but in
- 33:34Speaker 4: that time, I truly found Jesus. I grew up in
- 33:36Speaker 4: the church all my life, but I had never really
- 33:40Speaker 4: followed him if I mean, there's a difference, and so
- 33:44Speaker 4: I believe, but I didn't follow him. And it was
- 33:46Speaker 4: like there was a moment when she was sick, my
- 33:48Speaker 4: mom was sick that I was like, it just hit me.
- 33:50Speaker 4: Either this world is all we have and it really stinks,
- 33:55Speaker 4: or there's something more and it's still real, you know.
- 33:58Speaker 4: So it was just that moment, and so began to
- 34:01Speaker 4: seek him after she died in a new new way,
- 34:04Speaker 4: but also very struggling. And so it got to a
- 34:08Speaker 4: point where all of a sudden one summer, I thought
- 34:11Speaker 4: I had food allergies. I blamed it on I removed
- 34:15Speaker 4: all food because my stomach was bothered me so bad.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Every time I ate, I would just be sick. And
- 34:20Speaker 4: so I was down to eating protein shakes and rice cakes.
- 34:23Speaker 4: And I'm not kidding, like I said, that's the only
- 34:26Speaker 4: thing that doesn't hurt my stomach. And I had friends
- 34:28Speaker 4: that kindly gave me, you know, every product, there is,
- 34:32Speaker 4: every cleanse, every you know, thing that they could throw
- 34:36Speaker 4: at me, but I mean none of it worked, and
- 34:38Speaker 4: I got to the point where I was in a
- 34:40Speaker 4: surgeon's office this exploring options and they were going to
- 34:44Speaker 4: scope my stomach and do all these things, and that
- 34:48Speaker 4: kind doctor, I still say it was. The Lord asked
- 34:51Speaker 4: me multiple times what happened in the spring when this started?
- 34:54Speaker 3: What happened? What happened?
- 34:55Speaker 2: What happened?
- 34:56Speaker 4: He asked me, probably five times, And I was so oblivious.
- 34:59Speaker 4: This is how BLIVI was. I looked at them and said.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Nothing, nothing, Nothing happened in this nothing.
- 35:04Speaker 4: Nothing happened in the spring. But on my way home,
- 35:07Speaker 4: I realized my youngest brothers had graduated that spring, and
- 35:11Speaker 4: it was the first time I wasn't having to pour
- 35:15Speaker 4: into like them and take care of them. And I
- 35:19Speaker 4: was like losing that peace of my mom again, you know,
- 35:21Speaker 4: like I wasn't being their mom now, you know, and
- 35:24Speaker 4: don't have my mom, so I don't have that connection
- 35:26Speaker 4: and you know. And the next day I called a
- 35:29Speaker 4: counselor and realized I needed to start. And so that's
- 35:31Speaker 4: where I started, as counseling and seeking the Lord.
- 35:34Speaker 3: But then I found Revelation.
- 35:35Speaker 4: Wellness and started listening to their podcast when I worked out,
- 35:39Speaker 4: and combining the Word and God and found so much
- 35:42Speaker 4: healing in that, and so it just kept going, you know,
- 35:46Speaker 4: combining all the things, you know, getting out my grief,
- 35:50Speaker 4: moving my body, but to truth and seeking the Lord.
- 35:53Speaker 4: He just kept me, bringing me on a journey healing
- 35:56Speaker 4: and restoration more and more.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Wow, that's us awesome, Thank you, thank you. That. So
- 36:02Speaker 2: that's a huge story, but you did an amazing job
- 36:05Speaker 2: of sharing it succinctly. I think. I think there's so
- 36:09Speaker 2: much power and truth in that that that I want
- 36:12Speaker 2: to stop down on a few things for for our listeners.
- 36:14Speaker 2: And the first thing is that that our body and
- 36:19Speaker 2: our spirit are not separate. Like our spirit influences our
- 36:24Speaker 2: body their whole thing. Like and when I say spirit,
- 36:27Speaker 2: I mean like like if I'm grieving, you might not
- 36:29Speaker 2: see that in my body, right yeah, but my spirit
- 36:34Speaker 2: is is wrestling. I'm having a hard time. Man, I'm
- 36:38Speaker 2: crying randomly between like driving from one place to another,
- 36:43Speaker 2: there's nobody in the car. Finally I'm all by myself
- 36:46Speaker 2: and I can just let let that go, right. Uh.
- 36:49Speaker 2: But But that that that comes at of cost and
- 36:52Speaker 2: a price to the body. For for those who aren't aware,
- 36:56Speaker 2: there's a there's an amazing set of of research and literature,
- 37:01Speaker 2: Roger Pennabaker did some amazing work. He called it healing
- 37:05Speaker 2: it up by writing it down. And the idea though
- 37:08Speaker 2: being is that back in the eighties they did they
- 37:12Speaker 2: did research showing that if you wrote down your most
- 37:15Speaker 2: traumatic memories, if you wrote them down, if you took
- 37:18Speaker 2: fifteen twenty minutes he had he wrote it down, that
- 37:20Speaker 2: actually impacted your immune system. You'd be in a terrible
- 37:24Speaker 2: mood for a week, your immune markers or T cells
- 37:28Speaker 2: and stuff would actually increase in your body. But then thereafter,
- 37:32Speaker 2: six months later, your incidence of illness compared to the
- 37:36Speaker 2: average population who didn't go through that, your incidence of
- 37:40Speaker 2: illness dropped forty percent by comparison, and you would actually
- 37:44Speaker 2: report being less depressed, less anxious, and doing much better.
- 37:48Speaker 2: And that was the start of the research. But the
- 37:51Speaker 2: idea of being like, how does that work? How does
- 37:53Speaker 2: it work that things that I have in my mind
- 37:57Speaker 2: and in my heart so to speak, how does that
- 38:00Speaker 2: influence and impact the body? And it turns out the
- 38:02Speaker 2: way God made it, they're not separate, they work together.
- 38:07Speaker 2: It reminds me of the story where the friends of
- 38:10Speaker 2: the paralytic man drop them dropped him down from the
- 38:13Speaker 2: roof to be at Jesus's feet, and Jesus says to
- 38:17Speaker 2: the man, your sins are forgiven. Like what does that
- 38:20Speaker 2: have to do with anything? Guy wants to walk, But
- 38:22Speaker 2: that's what he says. That's what he says. He ties
- 38:25Speaker 2: right in that moment. He ties the man's spiritual health
- 38:31Speaker 2: to the strength of his body. And then you know,
- 38:34Speaker 2: the Pharisees are all you know up in our like
- 38:36Speaker 2: who's this guy? And he's like, Hey, which one's easier
- 38:39Speaker 2: to forgive sins or tell this guy to walk? And
- 38:41Speaker 2: so he asked him to pick up his mat and walk.
- 38:43Speaker 2: And I don't believe it's a mistake that those things
- 38:46Speaker 2: are tied together in that moment with Christ, because what
- 38:48Speaker 2: the man needs is to be forgiven, and that has
- 38:53Speaker 2: a lot to do with him getting up and walking.
- 38:55Speaker 2: And so it's so in your stories that is there's
- 38:59Speaker 2: a there's a huge, deep truth there that that I
- 39:02Speaker 2: want our listeners to get, and that is, if you
- 39:04Speaker 2: are wrestling in your body with unexplained health issues, and
- 39:08Speaker 2: you have been for a while, it's very possible that
- 39:13Speaker 2: that there are things in your spirit that are affecting
- 39:17Speaker 2: your body. And this is not wu, this is science,
- 39:20Speaker 2: this exists, Like we can study this and that and
- 39:24Speaker 2: that wrestling with that will actually improve your your health outcomes.
- 39:30Speaker 2: It sounds like it did for you.
- 39:31Speaker 3: Yeah, and it doesn't.
- 39:33Speaker 4: It's not a huge overhaul that you have to do it. It
- 39:35Speaker 4: doesn't take much like sit with the Lord and write
- 39:38Speaker 4: on an honest prayer today, Like just right out and
- 39:41Speaker 4: don't hold back, don't don't edit yourself, just let it
- 39:45Speaker 4: all out and then ask him what he has to.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Say to you.
- 39:47Speaker 4: Like you start there, like it can be so simple,
- 39:50Speaker 4: and he he's like the best at telling you what
- 39:52Speaker 4: to do next. So like it doesn't have to be
- 39:54Speaker 4: these huge things, but just start to notice, Like when
- 39:58Speaker 4: I began like I always treated my b over here
- 40:00Speaker 4: in one box. You know, my spiritual life in this box.
- 40:03Speaker 4: You know my emotions over here, And when I finally
- 40:06Speaker 4: understood they were all like under one umbrella, it changed everything.
- 40:10Speaker 4: It changed everything.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Yeah, well said, well said, So thank you, thank you
- 40:15Speaker 2: so much for sharing that story, and thank you for
- 40:18Speaker 2: being open and honest about that. I did also want
- 40:22Speaker 2: to point out this happens to a lot of moms,
- 40:25Speaker 2: and I'm not I'm not a mom obviously, and I
- 40:29Speaker 2: love my wife and I'm so glad she's the mother
- 40:32Speaker 2: of my children. That there's this thing that happens in women,
- 40:36Speaker 2: and that is that. And I say this as a guy, Okay,
- 40:39Speaker 2: I understand. I don't know. I don't know what it's
- 40:41Speaker 2: like to be on the receiving end. But you can
- 40:43Speaker 2: be going through all this stuff and then you can
- 40:46Speaker 2: get pregnant, and then you can have a baby, and
- 40:48Speaker 2: you can go through all the physical stress involved of
- 40:51Speaker 2: like building a life and breastfeeding and sleep deprivation and
- 40:54Speaker 2: all that stuff, and for a while, you kind of
- 40:57Speaker 2: lose yourself and you don't have control over that. You're
- 41:02Speaker 2: you're you are now mom, and you're going to be
- 41:04Speaker 2: mom by golly, despite whatever else, whatever whatever else was
- 41:09Speaker 2: going on. Uh. When you are on the other side
- 41:12Speaker 2: of that, though, it's not like all that stuff in
- 41:15Speaker 2: your life didn't happen, it's still it still can affect you.
- 41:17Speaker 2: It can still affect your health, it can still affect
- 41:19Speaker 2: your your physical body and stuff and so and so,
- 41:22Speaker 2: what I love about your story is that is that
- 41:26Speaker 2: God gave you the opportunity to become a mom. God
- 41:28Speaker 2: God gave you the strength you needed to be there
- 41:30Speaker 2: for your siblings and whatnot. But he also guided you
- 41:34Speaker 2: in a process of healing so that that wasn't your
- 41:37Speaker 2: whole story for the rest of your life. You could
- 41:39Speaker 2: be a grandma someday still with all that stuff. But
- 41:43Speaker 2: but uh, but as a as a mom going through
- 41:46Speaker 2: that in your heart and mind, is that something that
- 41:50Speaker 2: that you could deal with with toddlers? Is this something
- 41:53Speaker 2: you have to be at a certain stage of motherhood
- 41:55Speaker 2: before you can look back on those stuff in your heart?
- 41:58Speaker 2: But what do you believe about moms seeking their freedom
- 42:03Speaker 2: from grief and stress and also for forgiveness.
- 42:06Speaker 4: Yeah, there's never a good time in motherhood to do it.
- 42:10Speaker 4: Write like I'm just starting to get a high, Like
- 42:13Speaker 4: I have a high high schooler now, and it's so busy.
- 42:17Speaker 4: It's crazy, you know, Like I thought I was busy
- 42:20Speaker 4: before I didn't know busy, Like you know what I mean.
- 42:22Speaker 4: It's just so there's never a good time. It's And
- 42:26Speaker 4: the people who come in for health coaching, they feel
- 42:30Speaker 4: like they have this guilt for like taking care of themselves,
- 42:34Speaker 4: and we almost put it. I'd almost even say it's
- 42:37Speaker 4: a pride of like I can do this all, Like
- 42:40Speaker 4: we think we need to do everything and we don't
- 42:43Speaker 4: need to take care of ourselves in that like that,
- 42:46Speaker 4: let's just throw that out the way. Does it does
- 42:49Speaker 4: not take a long time. None of this takes long,
- 42:52Speaker 4: but it takes promising yourself you'll show up. When I
- 42:55Speaker 4: started counseling, I told myself I would not counsel I
- 43:00Speaker 4: would not cancel a single session because I knew every
- 43:04Speaker 4: time it was gonna come up, I didn't want to
- 43:05Speaker 4: do it, and I didn't have time, and I needed
- 43:07Speaker 4: to be with my kids because my kids were young
- 43:09Speaker 4: and I was driving. They didn't have online counseling at
- 43:13Speaker 4: the time, so I was driving an hour and spending
- 43:15Speaker 4: an hour there and then driving an hour home. Who
- 43:16Speaker 4: was time for three hours every other week?
- 43:19Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 43:20Speaker 4: Yeah, it was so selfish leaving my kids with a
- 43:22Speaker 4: babysitter when I could barely get a babysitter for my worktime.
- 43:25Speaker 3: You know, Like.
- 43:26Speaker 4: It's never easy, but it's so worth it, because if
- 43:31Speaker 4: we're not healing ourselves, we're just gonna like put that
- 43:33Speaker 4: on our kids. Like if I still felt all that
- 43:36Speaker 4: the anger that would come up quicker when they're like
- 43:39Speaker 4: messing up, would it just wouldn't be good. But it
- 43:42Speaker 4: doesn't take a lot. And even my last person, I
- 43:45Speaker 4: health coach, she came in and she thought, like, the
- 43:47Speaker 4: homework's gonna be so the homework's gonna be so much.
- 43:49Speaker 4: I don't have time to overhaul my life. I have
- 43:51Speaker 4: two kids, I work, you know, all the things. But
- 43:55Speaker 4: it doesn't take a lot. She just started waking up
- 43:57Speaker 4: in the morning and listening to up a lectio three
- 44:02Speaker 4: sixty five, which is just like a be still time
- 44:04Speaker 4: with the Word of Jesus. Like she started there, so
- 44:07Speaker 4: what's ten minutes? And that then it added to something
- 44:10Speaker 4: else and now she enjoys it so much she doesn't
- 44:12Speaker 4: want to give that up. And so it's just adding
- 44:15Speaker 4: little things and or making little space for you to
- 44:20Speaker 4: simply be and and you can work through these things
- 44:24Speaker 4: in simple ways. It doesn't have to be these huge
- 44:28Speaker 4: things and doesn't even have to be counseling or you
- 44:30Speaker 4: know what. It can be starting with forgiveness and you'll
- 44:33Speaker 4: see this huge shift and you know, take a half
- 44:37Speaker 4: hour and do that, and it's good. It's good to
- 44:41Speaker 4: do that even when your kids are busy. It's good
- 44:45Speaker 4: to make that space.
- 44:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. One of the reasons I love exercise
- 44:49Speaker 2: as a as a habit, is, as a good habit,
- 44:53Speaker 2: as a redeeming habit is because this this idea of
- 44:57Speaker 2: taking time for myself, idea of carving out a space
- 45:02Speaker 2: to move to do something that's good for me too,
- 45:07Speaker 2: you know, to have to plan around that, like and
- 45:10Speaker 2: you know, the cool thing about exercise is you can't
- 45:12Speaker 2: really do a lot of other things while you exercise.
- 45:14Speaker 2: You can't. You can't be like like, I'm also gonna
- 45:16Speaker 2: mop while I do my stretching, Like, no, you're not.
- 45:19Speaker 2: It's not gonna happen. You need you need to stretch,
- 45:21Speaker 2: or or I'm I'm also going to uh plan out
- 45:25Speaker 2: the budget while I go for a run, Like good
- 45:28Speaker 2: luck with that. You might think a little better. You
- 45:30Speaker 2: might be able to solve a few problems. You're not
- 45:32Speaker 2: going to be able to keep all those numbers in
- 45:33Speaker 2: your head, right, You just got to run right in.
- 45:36Speaker 2: What's what I love about exercise is for me in
- 45:38Speaker 2: my life, you know, hence the hence the setup. It
- 45:42Speaker 2: has always forced me to spend time with my father,
- 45:45Speaker 2: whether it's whether it's in worship, whether it's in thought
- 45:50Speaker 2: and prayer, whether it's just Uh. I don't know how
- 45:52Speaker 2: you feel about this, but when I get broken down physically,
- 45:55Speaker 2: when I'm at the end of a very terrible set
- 45:57Speaker 2: or something, you can't not pray. Have you heard the Joe? Uh?
- 46:00Speaker 2: It's a pastor. He gets to heaven and a taxi
- 46:03Speaker 2: driver gets to heaven and and they're standing in line,
- 46:05Speaker 2: and Saint Peter, it's a silly joke. This is not
- 46:08Speaker 2: this is not like like scriptural, but it's it's it's
- 46:10Speaker 2: still kind of funny. And so the pastor gets a
- 46:12Speaker 2: gets a wool robe and a wooden staff, and then
- 46:16Speaker 2: the taxi driver comes up to Saint Peter and he
- 46:18Speaker 2: he's a welcome, good and faithful servant. He gets a
- 46:20Speaker 2: golden staff and a silver robe. And the Pastor's like, wait,
- 46:23Speaker 2: I'm a pastor, he's a taxi driver. What what's going
- 46:26Speaker 2: on here? And Saint Peter goes, well, well, when you
- 46:28Speaker 2: preached your sermons, everybody fell asleep, but when that man
- 46:32Speaker 2: drove people were praying.
- 46:37Speaker 3: That's funny.
- 46:38Speaker 2: It's such a dumb joke. But but like exercise can
- 46:40Speaker 2: do that because it breaks you down to the root
- 46:43Speaker 2: of yourself, where where there's no pretense, there's no there's
- 46:48Speaker 2: no I can do this on my own. My physical
- 46:51Speaker 2: body literally can't go on. And guess what happens. You
- 46:53Speaker 2: start going, Lord help me, Lord, Lord, I'm not enough,
- 46:58Speaker 2: Like there's only have a little bit left. Please be
- 47:01Speaker 2: with me, you know. Like it's it's so strange the
- 47:03Speaker 2: prayers that can come out when you realize that you
- 47:08Speaker 2: can't do this all by yourself. And exercise is such
- 47:11Speaker 2: a cool discipline in that respect because because if I
- 47:13Speaker 2: say to somebody, hey, I need you to pray first
- 47:15Speaker 2: thing in the morning for ten minutes, not everybody knows
- 47:18Speaker 2: how to how to how to approach God's heart groggy
- 47:21Speaker 2: and coffee. It's something you can learn. It's not a
- 47:24Speaker 2: bad discipline. But if I say, hey, I need you
- 47:26Speaker 2: to go for a ten minute walk, and while you're walking,
- 47:29Speaker 2: I want you, I want you to thank God for
- 47:31Speaker 2: your day, and I want you to spend some time
- 47:34Speaker 2: with your father, and I want you, I want you
- 47:36Speaker 2: to listen to some worship music that that really lifts
- 47:39Speaker 2: you up. And that's that's all you're going to do
- 47:41Speaker 2: for ten minutes. What's what's cool is when you set
- 47:44Speaker 2: a timer and go for a walk, you walked, Yeah,
- 47:48Speaker 2: whereas you know, some some individuals, if I asked them
- 47:50Speaker 2: to spend ten minutes in prayer in the morning, they
- 47:52Speaker 2: somehow end up on their phone. Anyway, It's huge. I
- 47:57Speaker 2: love that exercise is a discipline you have. You have
- 48:00Speaker 2: some workshops that you get to teach. Can you tell
- 48:02Speaker 2: us about how how you help people make the space
- 48:05Speaker 2: yea or for coming together and spending time in their
- 48:09Speaker 2: exercise discipline.
- 48:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I do these be still stretching and journaling classes
- 48:14Speaker 4: that are an hour and a half and they're always
- 48:17Speaker 4: on a certain topic. Like my next one's about when
- 48:20Speaker 4: anxiety is overwhelming, how to breathe through it. And so
- 48:24Speaker 4: we teach like I teach the science, like I. First,
- 48:28Speaker 4: we slow our bodies down, we do some breathing always,
- 48:31Speaker 4: but I teach the science first because God God designs science,
- 48:34Speaker 4: so people want to know the science behind these things.
- 48:37Speaker 3: So we teach the science.
- 48:39Speaker 4: Then I move into usually a journaling practice, and so
- 48:43Speaker 4: it's guided journaling. They're not left on their own to
- 48:45Speaker 4: do whatever, but it's questions to really reflect and so
- 48:48Speaker 4: they're getting that soul work done in that time that
- 48:52Speaker 4: they don't often don't make time for right, So I'm
- 48:54Speaker 4: just creating the space and time. You schedule this class
- 48:57Speaker 4: and then you get to sit and then you go
- 48:59Speaker 4: do it right, get to go do it, and you're
- 49:00Speaker 4: guided through it. You don't have to wonder what do
- 49:02Speaker 4: I do?
- 49:02Speaker 3: What do I do? In the time.
- 49:04Speaker 4: So they work through that and then I move into
- 49:06Speaker 4: biblical teaching on the topic. And then we stretch and
- 49:10Speaker 4: we do really slow gentle stretches, but we get it
- 49:12Speaker 4: in our body, so we just learn things. But now
- 49:14Speaker 4: we're gonna, you know, move to gentle music and be
- 49:18Speaker 4: reminded of what we learned throughout it and keep stretching
- 49:21Speaker 4: our bodies. And then we have time where we just
- 49:23Speaker 4: lay on the mat. They're just laying. They get a blanket,
- 49:27Speaker 4: a pillow, a good smelling lavender towel, you know, all
- 49:32Speaker 4: the good things. So they're very rusted. Yeah, we just
- 49:36Speaker 4: meditate on that. So we'll do breath prayers, we'll do
- 49:38Speaker 4: meditating much on scripture, asking questions of the Lord. But
- 49:42Speaker 4: it's such a sweet time and people are so restored
- 49:46Speaker 4: after it and feel.
- 49:47Speaker 3: Like that it was so good. We need that space.
- 49:49Speaker 4: We don't when do we ever carve ninety minutes out
- 49:52Speaker 4: just to go slow? Like not very often I mean
- 49:57Speaker 4: even like.
- 49:58Speaker 2: A year ago. I think I did a year ago.
- 49:59Speaker 3: I'm just yeah, right exactly. But it's so so needed.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that. Thank you for that. I think
- 50:07Speaker 2: that's so good, you know. I when when I I
- 50:10Speaker 2: disciple men in my community, and one of the things
- 50:13Speaker 2: that I do is I'll say, hey, I want you
- 50:14Speaker 2: to meet me at my house. I want you to
- 50:16Speaker 2: come fasted, and we'll go from there and I will
- 50:19Speaker 2: take I will drive them. We live in the great
- 50:22Speaker 2: State of Arkansas, so so there's the state parks all
- 50:26Speaker 2: over the place. It's the natural state. I will drive
- 50:29Speaker 2: them to a hike. We will hike, and then we
- 50:30Speaker 2: will literally sit at a waterfall and just spend time talking, praying,
- 50:35Speaker 2: and then and get under the waterfall, because that's what
- 50:38Speaker 2: guys do, and latest canto I highly and then and
- 50:43Speaker 2: then peace out. And it's like, oh my gosh, I
- 50:45Speaker 2: needed that so much. I know that that's how I
- 50:48Speaker 2: get away and spend time with my father. Jesus did
- 50:51Speaker 2: that all the time. That was that's how he did it.
- 50:53Speaker 2: And and creating that space in an exercise workshop sort
- 50:59Speaker 2: of sort of way is so so powerful. So I
- 51:03Speaker 2: just want to say from me to you. Thank you
- 51:05Speaker 2: for what you do. I think that's amazing. Exercises great,
- 51:08Speaker 2: Lifting heavyweights is awesome, Jumping around and doing jumping jacks
- 51:11Speaker 2: is powerful. Going for runs, eating, well, all that's good.
- 51:15Speaker 2: All that's good. But if our soul is separate from
- 51:20Speaker 2: that practice, our if our spirit and the things we
- 51:24Speaker 2: need to forgive and the grief we're wrestling through, if
- 51:26Speaker 2: it's separate from that practice, sometimes it can do more
- 51:30Speaker 2: harm than good. And I just want to say I'm
- 51:32Speaker 2: so grateful that you're helping individuals integrate that, and I
- 51:36Speaker 2: also want to recognize God's goodness and helping you do
- 51:39Speaker 2: the same for yourself.
- 51:40Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 51:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:42Speaker 4: Yeah, And when we do separate, I'd just like to say,
- 51:45Speaker 4: we treat our bodies like a project, like something to
- 51:48Speaker 4: be fixed, separate than us, but when we combine them,
- 51:53Speaker 4: it's just something to be cared for and take like
- 51:56Speaker 4: it's a gift. And so it just changes your mindset
- 52:00Speaker 4: when you bring worship and your whole self into taking
- 52:03Speaker 4: care of your body.
- 52:04Speaker 2: Yeah, well said, well said. Well, this has been such
- 52:07Speaker 2: such a useful and powerful conversation. Thank you, Leah, And
- 52:09Speaker 2: I wanted to point listeners to you. You actually have
- 52:13Speaker 2: a free ebook that they can get connected to. I
- 52:15Speaker 2: think the title is Let's Reclaim the Truth about Our Body.
- 52:19Speaker 2: That link is in the show notes. Can you can
- 52:21Speaker 2: you tell my listeners when when they get a hold
- 52:23Speaker 2: of that, what are they going to find in there?
- 52:25Speaker 2: Let's Reclaim the Truth about our body?
- 52:28Speaker 4: There's five days in there to read, a super short thing,
- 52:31Speaker 4: just different truths about your body and the biblical perspective
- 52:34Speaker 4: on that. We learned so much from the world. The
- 52:37Speaker 4: world has told we let the world be our teacher
- 52:39Speaker 4: about our body. But God says a lot about it
- 52:43Speaker 4: in his word, and so you'll just discover that in
- 52:46Speaker 4: there of what he says about your body. And then
- 52:50Speaker 4: there's truth cards at the back that you can post
- 52:53Speaker 4: on your mirror so you can repeat that truth of yourself.
- 52:56Speaker 4: But it's good to know what he's saying about our
- 52:59Speaker 4: body because it's a very different from what the world
- 53:02Speaker 4: has said.
- 53:04Speaker 2: True. That true, that's that's and he made it. So
- 53:07Speaker 2: like let's let's let him tell us what we need
- 53:09Speaker 2: to think and do about it. Yes, yes, awesome. Well,
- 53:14Speaker 2: hey Leah, thank you so much for the opportunity to
- 53:16Speaker 2: get together. I want to make sure that I pray
- 53:18Speaker 2: over you and pray over your family and your ministry.
- 53:21Speaker 2: So if you would buy your head with me. Yeah, Father, God,
- 53:25Speaker 2: thank you so much for this day. Thank you for
- 53:26Speaker 2: the opportunity to connect with my sister, and thank you
- 53:29Speaker 2: for the path that you have led her on. Leah
- 53:32Speaker 2: doesn't mean she's weary and grieving. Leah means that she
- 53:36Speaker 2: is one you have talked to deal with grief and
- 53:39Speaker 2: to deal well with weariness. And God, I just pray
- 53:42Speaker 2: that you would bless that in her so that she
- 53:44Speaker 2: can help other individuals to be able to wrestle that
- 53:48Speaker 2: out too, to get close to your heart. That you
- 53:51Speaker 2: would give them rest and peace in the workshops that
- 53:53Speaker 2: she leads. That you would bless her words as she
- 53:57Speaker 2: speaks over her children and her husband and the individuals
- 54:00Speaker 2: that she leads when they work out. Lord, I just
- 54:04Speaker 2: pray that you would also give her good health and
- 54:08Speaker 2: good joy in the time that she spends with you. Lord,
- 54:11Speaker 2: I pray freedom, grace, and blessing in the truths that
- 54:14Speaker 2: you've spoken over her, and I pray that those things
- 54:17Speaker 2: will trickle into those who have been informed by the
- 54:19Speaker 2: world but need to be close to your heart so
- 54:23Speaker 2: that their bodies are a part of their walk with
- 54:26Speaker 2: you not separate. God, bless this time and bless our
- 54:29Speaker 2: listeners in Jesus' name, Amen, man Leah, thank you so
