- 1:17I'm so excited. So for the next 8 weeks you're
- 1:19getting mini tech on Wednesdays. But also touch grass with me.
- 1:23OK, the first story that I have for you guys today.
- 1:25Speaking of Australian creatives, I need to talk about
- 1:30Sydney's heated rivalry look alike competition that happened
- 1:34over the weekend. I was actually going to talk
- 1:36about this yesterday, but I forgot to and it's an important
- 1:38story to me, so I'm bringing it to you guys today.
- 1:41So on Saturday there was this local look alike competition
- 1:45hosted in Sydney for Connor Story and Hudson Williams of
- 1:48heated rivalry to find the people who live in Sydney that
- 1:51look the most like them. I'm sure you guys, if you're on
- 1:54TikTok know a look alike competition.
- 1:56They're so popular. I don't know if the first one, I
- 2:00don't think it was the first one, but maybe it was the first
- 2:02one was the bok one from wicked like a year and a half ago.
- 2:04Now that one's so viral. It was in New York City and then
- 2:08it kind of spawned all of these other look alike competitions
- 2:10all around the world for different fandoms and different
- 2:13TV shows and movies. I don't know if that was just
- 2:15the first one that went like truly viral or if that was kind
- 2:18of like the first one that happened.
- 2:20I'm not really sure. Regardless, they got really
- 2:22popular from this Bach 1. And I guess because obviously
- 2:25heated rivalry is so popular, it has such a big fandom.
- 2:28People around the world have been talking about doing these
- 2:31look alike competitions. And so we had one in Sydney.
- 2:34And the reason why I want to talk about this was one, it was
- 2:37put on by my friend Lena Tuck completely on her own without
- 2:41any, any funding, without any help.
- 2:43And #2 what it turned into and how it was covered by the
- 2:47mainstream media is fascinating for us to look at.
- 2:51So Lena is a media girlie. She worked in social media for
- 2:54huge publications, huge media brands here in Australia.
- 2:58She went freelance last year. She's actually my guest for next
- 3:01week's Touch Grass. You guys will get to hear a
- 3:03little bit more about her and learn about her story next week.
- 3:06But Lena put on this look alike competition in Sydney this
- 3:09weekend and she said she just saw others planning it online
- 3:13around the world and she thought, OK, someone's going to
- 3:15do it in Australia and if I don't do this now, someone else
- 3:18will take this opportunity, so why don't I just do it?
- 3:21So she started posting about this on her Instagram stories.
- 3:23She was basically like making polls and asking people who
- 3:26follow her, you know, like, do you think I should do this?
- 3:29Would you guys go? People obviously were saying
- 3:31yes. So she set a date, a time, a
- 3:33location, She made posters about it.
- 3:35She taped these posters up all around Sydney.
- 3:38And she also documented literally all all of this, like
- 3:42every detail on her Instagram stories.
- 3:45She talked about this on TikTok, but the actual like behind the
- 3:48scenes was on her Instagram stories, which was a really
- 3:51interesting and smart move because like I said, she's a
- 3:54media girlie. So she presumably has a lot of
- 3:56journalists, a lot of producers, a lot of PR people who follow
- 4:00her. So she was getting traction with
- 4:02this within her own closed community on Instagram.
- 4:05And then because she was putting posters up everywhere, people
- 4:08were posting about this because obviously he did rivalry so
- 4:11popular. So so people were making like
- 4:12TikTok videos and taking photos of it and posting it on social
- 4:15media. And then that content, no matter
- 4:18how many followers those people had, was getting like 10s of
- 4:21thousands of views. So it was going very organically
- 4:24viral. And then about two days before
- 4:25it was supposed to happen, the council, so she was supposed to
- 4:28hold it in a park in Newtown in Sydney.
- 4:30And the council said that she would get fined because it was
- 4:32going to end up being like so big.
- 4:34Like I said, it was going so viral.
- 4:36So she ended up moving it last minute to the Imperial, which is
- 4:38a pretty like iconic bar slash pub in the the inner W It was a
- 4:42huge success. OK.
- 4:44She ended up having a drag queen host it.
- 4:46She ended up renting like speakers and sound equipment.
- 4:49So it could be like this huge event.
- 4:50She got so much organic press. Hundreds of people showed up and
- 4:54there actually were a few brands that donated prizes for the
- 4:57winners. And she also said that the
- 4:58Imperial, the bar that she held it at, said that this event was
- 5:01bigger for them than Mardi Gras and then New Year's Eve, which
- 5:05is insane. So what is interesting to me
- 5:09about this is so much of the press around the event centered
- 5:12on the actual competition and the winners.
- 5:15Lena was posting screenshots of her emails on her Instagram
- 5:18story when they were coming in from media outlets being like,
- 5:20Oh my God, what is happening? You know, them asking if like,
- 5:23they could come and cover it and can they speak to her about
- 5:25this? Whatever.
- 5:26And so she posted one screenshot of a mainstream media outlet
- 5:30here saying that they didn't want to speak with her.
- 5:32They just wanted to speak to the look like winners, essentially.
- 5:35Like they didn't say it quite in that way, but that's basically
- 5:37what they said. And in reading that, I was like,
- 5:41OK, we need to cover this. It's moments like these that
- 5:43Centennial needs to tap the fuck in that youth media needs
- 5:46Centennial because these look like competitions.
- 5:49They go so viral on TikTok, right?
- 5:51And we know that mainstream media, they have been desperate
- 5:54to tap youth culture and be part of the zeitgeist and not lose
- 5:58relevance for so long. But the way that they covered
- 6:01this event proved to me that while mainstream media may have
- 6:05been able to to identify that this would be a relevant story
- 6:09to cover, they could not identify what part of this story
- 6:13was relevant. Because they look like
- 6:15competition winners. Like they are just random
- 6:17people. Especially at this point when
- 6:18they were emailing her asking to cover them.
- 6:20Like we had no idea who these people were going to be.
- 6:23These are just random people that look like celebrities.
- 6:26But any journalist who is tapped into Internet culture could tell
- 6:29you that the real story is around Lena.
- 6:31As an organizer of a grassroots initiative for a fandom
- 6:35community, she had no backing. She pulled it off in a matter of
- 6:39weeks, and it became one of the biggest and buzziest.
- 6:42I are all phantom events. And it got there by being
- 6:45organically viral, by getting organic traction.
- 6:48And that is why I wanted to talk about this story because I feel
- 6:52like that is the most important part of this story is how
- 6:55influential fandom culture can be.
- 6:58And the fact that she did this and she was speaking, you know,
- 7:00like she didn't have a lot of time to plan this, but she was
- 7:02speaking about like if brands want to tap in, if brands want
- 7:05to get involved, anybody wants to sponsor this.
- 7:08And people gave prizes, like I said, but this was such a missed
- 7:12opportunity for a brand to jump in and give her like, even if
- 7:16they gave like 5K10K to facilitate something really
- 7:19amazing, the amount of coverage they would have gotten from this
- 7:23and then that positive affiliation that everybody who
- 7:26was there would have had with this brand.
- 7:28That's literally the point of marketing.
- 7:29I know, but I know I'm just describing marketing to you
- 7:31guys, but I couldn't believe that, you know, she didn't get a
- 7:35sponsor, that she pulled this off.
- 7:37It turned into this massive thing.
- 7:38There was so much organic press and I couldn't believe that the
- 7:40story for most outlets was who won the look alike competition.
- 7:45Anyway, she's going to do one in Melbourne, so if anybody wants
- 7:48to sponsor that one, hit her up. OK, OK, the next story that I
- 7:52have for you guys today is Danielle Bernstein of We were
- 7:55what announced over the weekend that she has called off her
- 7:59engagement. So fashion Blogger Danielle
- 8:01Bernstein of We Were What announced that her and her
- 8:04fiance Cooper Weissman had called off their engagement.
- 8:08The two dated for two years before getting engaged 6 months
- 8:11ago. Now, the reason why I want to
- 8:12cover this is I cannot escape it.
- 8:14It has sent Reddit into a tailspin because Danielle is so
- 8:20controversial. There actually were rumors that
- 8:22the two had split like before she announced it because fans
- 8:25noticed that Danielle hadn't posted him in a while.
- 8:28And then over the weekend, she put this on her Instagram
- 8:30stories. I've been quiet about my
- 8:31personal life and wasn't ready to speak on it until now.
- 8:34We're stepping away from our relationship with love and
- 8:36respect. There is no big dramatic reason.
- 8:38Sometimes it's simply not the right forever.
- 8:41I'm not sure what the future holds, but this choice took
- 8:44courage. I would really appreciate
- 8:46privacy and grace for both of us during this time.
- 8:48Thank you for the support. OK, so obviously nobody actually
- 8:51knows, but the two major rumors here, first that there were
- 8:55prenup negotiations that they just could not resolve, they
- 8:58could not figure out, and that was kind of the straw that broke
- 9:00the camels back for them. And the second thing that people
- 9:04are saying is that apparently at their engagement party, he was
- 9:08caught on a hot mic moment calling Danielle fake.
- 9:12This is all alleged, but those are the rumors for lying around
- 9:15online. Now, the reason why people are
- 9:17losing their minds over this is Danielle is not very well liked.
- 9:20She's been famous for so long and over the years she's been
- 9:24accused of a lot of really like shady business practices, I
- 9:28would say, and photoshopping her appearance, filtering her social
- 9:32media to a really extreme degree.
- 9:35She's been accused of being tone deaf and out of touch.
- 9:38So I actually have a bit of a timeline here of like her main
- 9:41controversies for you guys because I don't know if I've
- 9:43ever spoken about Danielle Bernstein before, but I got a
- 9:45lot of this information from Reddit and also a Beche's
- 9:48article. In 2018, she was accused of
- 9:52stealing jewelry designs from smaller jewelry brands in a
- 9:55collab that she was doing. And some of these pieces that
- 9:58she was accused of, you know, copying the designs were
- 10:01actually removed from the store from the collaboration amid the
- 10:04backlash. In 2020, Danielle posted that
- 10:07she'd found vintage 90s gym shorts that she was going to
- 10:10remake for her brand. We Wore What?
- 10:12But it turned out that they were made to order pieces from an
- 10:15Etsy seller, and she ended up blaming the mix up on a team
- 10:18member after being called out online.
- 10:21And then around the same time, during lockdowns and COVID, she
- 10:24sold linen masks with detachable chains.
- 10:27Another small brand, Second Wind, pointed out that the
- 10:30design was nearly identical to theirs, and Danielle had even
- 10:33asked them for samples beforehand.
- 10:35After the backlash, she defended herself and donated masks and
- 10:39then quietly deleted these posts.
- 10:41And then across those years, like 2020 to 2021, various
- 10:45designers and brands claimed that we were what designs looked
- 10:48very similar to theirs. In 2022, when social media was
- 10:52raising awareness for the Ukraine war, she posted bikini
- 10:55pics with the caption. You can care about both war and
- 10:59self promo. And then she also launched this
- 11:02credit card. So she launched a Co branded
- 11:05Visa card marketed with rewards. But it was pointed out that the
- 11:09cash back couldn't be redeemed as cash and had to be spent at
- 11:14her brand's shop, which led to a lot of backlash and accusations
- 11:18of predatory marketing. In 2025, a former employee
- 11:22publicly described Danielle as controlling and frugal and how
- 11:25she treated staff at her brands. And then most recently, in
- 11:28November 2025, a bride on TikTok talk accused Danielle of
- 11:32stealing her wedding speech, which Danielle gave at her
- 11:34engagement party. So this speech that Danielle
- 11:36gave at her engagement party, this bride was like, she took
- 11:39this, I posted this on TikTok of my like me giving this speech at
- 11:43my wedding and it was nearly word for word.
- 11:45So Needless to say, people are invested in Danielle Bernstein.
- 11:50She just, like, keeps doing shady stuff, out of touch stuff.
- 11:54She's been, like I said, famous for so long.
- 11:57I think because she's one of the original bloggers, Like, people
- 12:00just keep taps on her, even if she doesn't really have a culty
- 12:03following in the same way that she probably once did.
- 12:06People just keep up with her because she's like, an OG for
- 12:08them. And yeah, she's highly
- 12:09controversial, I would say. All right.
- 12:11And the last story that I have for you guys today is we need to
- 12:14talk about Alex Warren's Grammy performance Glitch.
- 12:18This is actually really sad. So Alex Warren, former Hype
- 12:22House star, now singer of the hit The Ordinary, he sang The
- 12:26Ordinary as part of the best new artist medley with his fellow
- 12:29nominees at the Grammys yesterday.
- 12:32Alex started at his performance at what seemed to be a stall,
- 12:35selling popcorn, and he hands over cash.
- 12:37And then the attendant gave him a microphone and he starts
- 12:40singing. He's walking into the arena and
- 12:42eventually he ends up on stage. And it quickly became clear
- 12:46throughout this performance that there was something wrong with
- 12:48Alex's in ear monitors. He was repeatedly touching them.
- 12:52He appeared to be trying to touch like the mic pack on his
- 12:55back. And he eventually took them out.
- 12:57And this was also made evident because he wasn't actually
- 13:00singing in line with his music. The crowd cheered him on at the
- 13:03end, but he seemed so upset. And then he later posted a
- 13:07TikTok with the text. When you're performing at the
- 13:09Grammys and all you hear is this in your ear and it's the music
- 13:12playing his song just like echoing over and over and over
- 13:15again. This is devastating.
- 13:17I imagine performing at the Grammys, getting nominated for
- 13:20best new artist, you know, performing at the Grammys, like
- 13:22biggest career moments of your entire life.
- 13:25And then this happens. And like, everybody was so
- 13:27supportive, like every celebrity, everybody's in his
- 13:30comments section being like, you did such a good job.
- 13:32You still sounded so amazing, you know, whatever.
- 13:34And of course, he did like he made the best of what he could
- 13:36have that situation. But it's still so heartbreaking.
- 13:40And I feel really bad because, you know, as a former TikTok
- 13:43star, whether you think he deserves is this or not, you
- 13:45know, the hyper and his song or not, being a former TikTok star,
- 13:49you are so underestimated regardless, especially when you
- 13:53try and pivot and he beat the odds like he had the number one
- 13:57song of 2025 in many respects. And then to be performing in a
- 14:01room filled with your, I guess new peers, I imagine you'd have
- 14:05some level of imposter syndrome. You'd probably be crazy not to
- 14:09entering that room and having to perform for them.
- 14:11And then that happens. I feel really bad for him.
- 14:14Very, very unfortunate. However, I do imagine in a few
- 14:16years he'll look back at this and he'll be like, wow, that was
- 14:20really funny. He'll be able to laugh at it.
- 14:22Right now, maybe he's crying, but he seems to be in good
- 14:25spirits about it. He seems to be handling it well.
- 14:27Anyways, guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 14:29Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
