- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Jim mor the Yukon Football Coaches Show on
- 0:03Speaker 1: Mike Christino. A few final details on the Delaware game.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I'll tell you what if you're just a football fan,
- 0:10Speaker 1: and I know you can't be a football fan because
- 0:12Speaker 1: you're the head coach, but that was pretty exciting stuff
- 0:17Speaker 1: that first half. If you like offense, My goodness, the
- 0:21Speaker 1: ball was going up and down the field like a
- 0:23Speaker 1: pinball machine both teams. I like the way Yukon bounced back.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Four times you were down in that game and four
- 0:31Speaker 1: times you rallied to get the lead. I mean, that's
- 0:34Speaker 1: got to say something, I think to the coaching staff
- 0:36Speaker 1: about what this team's about.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:38Speaker 3: I was proud of the resolve and resilience we showed,
- 0:41Speaker 3: especially on offense, our ability to respond over and over
- 0:44Speaker 3: again and you know, put up forty one points. It's just,
- 0:47Speaker 3: you know, those questions are so hard for you, Mike,
- 0:49Speaker 3: because you know, and I'm not a pessimist. I'm an optimist.
- 0:52Speaker 3: I'm a glasses half full guy. But I always go
- 0:54Speaker 3: back to, like you know, we were talking about the
- 0:56Speaker 3: last segment, the fourth and one or the overtime, you know,
- 1:00Speaker 3: getting it done at the most important time. You know,
- 1:04Speaker 3: but all those times are important. You're right, and it
- 1:07Speaker 3: does give you. It's like I said, that's why I
- 1:09Speaker 3: have a sense of optimism is because I believe that
- 1:13Speaker 3: we've got some talented players on offense that really really care.
- 1:16Speaker 3: I believe we've got some talented players on defense that
- 1:17Speaker 3: really really care. We've just got to make sure that
- 1:19Speaker 3: we've become more consistent defensively and maintain consistency and even
- 1:24Speaker 3: develop more consistency offensively. But to be able to respond
- 1:27Speaker 3: on the road against a good football team, a good defense.
- 1:30Speaker 3: The way we did offensively is certainly is something that
- 1:33Speaker 3: we've got to build on.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Yeah, and the way that you as an offense spread
- 1:38Speaker 1: the ball around was I thought very very significant because
- 1:42Speaker 1: I mean Joe Finiano twenty eight of thirty eight three
- 1:45Speaker 1: forty six, he hit ten different receivers. Not many football
- 1:50Speaker 1: games you look at the team and say, well, ten
- 1:52Speaker 1: different guys caught passes. Because to me, now, when you
- 1:56Speaker 1: have to defend you Kona through the air, you've got
- 1:59Speaker 1: to look at a lot of ass fix of the
- 2:00Speaker 1: way the Huskies play offense.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Well, you know it's not Skyler's one of the leading
- 2:06Speaker 3: receivers in the country. But he's not the only guy
- 2:08Speaker 3: on his team, and so you know, you know, the
- 2:10Speaker 3: team's going to focus on Skyler, and so you have
- 2:12Speaker 3: to have other guys that can make plays. And we've
- 2:14Speaker 3: got other guys that can make plays. We've got a
- 2:16Speaker 3: quarterback that understands coverages and when they're trying to take
- 2:18Speaker 3: someone away and can get it to other guys. And
- 2:21Speaker 3: you know, we played most of that game without Juice Vereen,
- 2:24Speaker 3: which was you know, he was a big part of
- 2:25Speaker 3: the plan and we lost him. So but then you
- 2:27Speaker 3: have Lou you know, who has become a very dependable
- 2:30Speaker 3: player for us here at Yukon in his two years,
- 2:32Speaker 3: you know, kind of filling the role that Juice was
- 2:35Speaker 3: going to play. In that game, you got Ty Bowman,
- 2:37Speaker 3: you got Ray Mello, and John Nider shows up big.
- 2:41Speaker 3: You know, he made two tremendously big catches for us.
- 2:44Speaker 3: And he had four catches, I believe, but two that
- 2:46Speaker 3: were huge. So there's there's some guys, you know, and
- 2:49Speaker 3: there's some names that you know, a guy like Chris Parker,
- 2:51Speaker 3: who I don't know that he's well, he caught some
- 2:53Speaker 3: balls against Central Connecticut, but you know he's a guy
- 2:56Speaker 3: that's starting to show up in practice and we're getting
- 2:58Speaker 3: him more reps in the game and guys like Karen Smith.
- 3:01Speaker 3: You know, so there's some there's some guys that can
- 3:03Speaker 3: make plays for us. If guys get hurt or if
- 3:07Speaker 3: they focus on one player, like you know teams are
- 3:10Speaker 3: doing with Sky, We've got other guys that can go
- 3:12Speaker 3: make plays for us.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Juice, Fariene Jim. You listen him as a tight end.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I look at him when he comes out on the
- 3:18Speaker 1: field and I say, I don't know, he could be
- 3:20Speaker 1: a slot guy.
- 3:21Speaker 2: He could be a wide out. I mean, he's so
- 3:24Speaker 2: versatile and he's so talented. I love watching him play.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I do too. I like those in between guys
- 3:30Speaker 3: that they're hard to define. So I think they're hard
- 3:33Speaker 3: for the defense to define and how they're going to
- 3:34Speaker 3: cover them. You know, they they post problems for coordinators.
- 3:39Speaker 3: You know, you want to treat him as a tight end.
- 3:40Speaker 3: You want to treat him as a wide out. You know,
- 3:42Speaker 3: you can put him out at number one, you can
- 3:43Speaker 3: put him in the slot so he can create some
- 3:46Speaker 3: matchup issues for us. And you know, fortunately he was
- 3:49Speaker 3: back out of practice today and expect him to play
- 3:52Speaker 3: on Saturday because he's a he's a guy that we
- 3:55Speaker 3: we really like, you know, we really like trying to
- 3:58Speaker 3: design ways to get him the ball.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Before we get off the offense.
- 4:01Speaker 1: For a second, just want to mention the fact that
- 4:04Speaker 1: the tight ends I believe and I'm going to check
- 4:07Speaker 1: my notes here seven catches by the tight ends or
- 4:10Speaker 1: maybe even more. I mean, that's pretty impressive. You're getting
- 4:12Speaker 1: the ball to those guys who can really rumble, and
- 4:15Speaker 1: you got a touchdown pass thrown to Hanig Alex Honick,
- 4:19Speaker 1: and then you got, as you mentioned, Lou Hanson. The
- 4:21Speaker 1: transfer from Michigan is like he's got glue hands. I mean,
- 4:25Speaker 1: he didn't drop anything. So I mean the tight Ends
- 4:28Speaker 1: now become a factor every time a team lines up
- 4:31Speaker 1: to take on Yukon.
- 4:33Speaker 3: And that's what you want, you know, you want that
- 4:35Speaker 3: versatility in terms of different types of bodies, skill sets.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Joe has a lot of confidence in those guys. You know,
- 4:45Speaker 3: they're they're bigger, they're easier to find, they're bigger targets.
- 4:50Speaker 3: You know, you mentioned Alex and Lou. You know they're
- 4:55Speaker 3: they're a little bit more inert. Notter had a nice catch,
- 4:58Speaker 3: you know down the scene. You know you talkalk about
- 5:01Speaker 3: with guys like Alex and Notter. There's you know, there's
- 5:03Speaker 3: six six sixty seven, two hundred and sixty five seventy
- 5:06Speaker 3: pound guys. He can catch the ball well that you know,
- 5:08Speaker 3: they're not just big slug tight ends, Lou. You know,
- 5:11Speaker 3: we play them at full back, we play them at
- 5:13Speaker 3: tight end, we play them at the h back. So
- 5:16Speaker 3: when you have those body types that have the ability
- 5:19Speaker 3: to catch the ball in space, and you want to
- 5:21Speaker 3: utilize them, and I think that our offensive staff does
- 5:23Speaker 3: a really good job of that.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yeah, we're going to talk to Noder Church a little
- 5:27Speaker 2: bit later on.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Played some defensive end in high school, but it looks
- 5:30Speaker 1: like he's going to have a future as a tight
- 5:32Speaker 1: end with that size and his good hands.
- 5:34Speaker 2: So on the defensive side, Brian Parham, and we're going
- 5:38Speaker 2: to talk to him later in the show. Three sacks.
- 5:41Speaker 2: I think he's got four second I'm not sure in
- 5:43Speaker 2: the season something like that.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Anyway, Five Mike, I think you're right. I think he's got.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Five second game in a row though the team has
- 5:51Speaker 1: had four sacks, So you're you're able to put pressure
- 5:55Speaker 1: on people, and in my mind, when you see that
- 5:59Speaker 1: from the defense, subside, and it's guys that aren't the
- 6:02Speaker 1: down lineman that's tricky for quarterbacks to handle because you
- 6:06Speaker 1: don't know where they're coming from.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Is am I right in saying that?
- 6:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Matt does a really good job of
- 6:12Speaker 3: designing pressures to shake different guys free. And I think
- 6:16Speaker 3: that it is a real credit, real credit to Kenny
- 6:20Speaker 3: mcclennon and our defensive line that they are so unselfish,
- 6:24Speaker 3: because I've been in places where defensive linemen if they
- 6:27Speaker 3: aren't getting the great opportunity to come free, they don't
- 6:30Speaker 3: like it, and our guys embrace it, and that is
- 6:33Speaker 3: a real positive. But Brian has really played well for us.
- 6:37Speaker 3: You know, the sacks stand out because you see him
- 6:39Speaker 3: and their obvious plays, but the other things that he
- 6:41Speaker 3: does for us that are so impressive or like his attitude,
- 6:45Speaker 3: his work ethic, his presence, his energy, his study habits,
- 6:50Speaker 3: and then his production on Saturdays. I mean, he's becoming
- 6:53Speaker 3: a guy that you know, has opened a lot of
- 6:56Speaker 3: eyes here hopefully you know, people at the next level
- 7:00Speaker 3: seeing him. And I mean, I'm so glad he's on
- 7:04Speaker 3: our football team. So glad he's on our football team.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I think he had nine tackles in the game. One
- 7:09Speaker 1: final thing before we go to break. Ben Smiley did
- 7:11Speaker 1: not play in the game. You mentioned he was close
- 7:14Speaker 1: during the week last week. Was he back at practice Tuesday?
- 7:17Speaker 3: He was the only guy that wasn't back at practice today.
- 7:20Speaker 3: You know, we had a bunch of guys that got
- 7:22Speaker 3: nicked up in that game and had to leave the game.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Carston has our tackle, had to leave the game. Vincent
- 7:26Speaker 3: Jackson had to leave the game, although he was able
- 7:28Speaker 3: to come back. We mentioned Juice he had to leave
- 7:30Speaker 3: the game. Tyrese Mills he left the game. He didn't
- 7:34Speaker 3: come back. Everyone was back at practice today except for
- 7:37Speaker 3: mel who had surgery having surgery, had surgery on Tuesday.
- 7:42Speaker 1: All right, back in a moment, we'll start looking at
- 7:45Speaker 1: ball State with Jim Morra. This is the Yukon Football
- 7:48Speaker 1: Coaches Show on lear Field.
