Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER1: Today on Inside the OSD, we have a fun topic: Prom.
- 0:06Our Oregon High School Student council members are preparing for prom and have come up with a great idea for making sure classmates have access to formalwear
- 0:16for prom. You're going to want to listen up to this one, especially if you have formal wear sitting around that you're not using.
- 0:24SPEAKER2: Welcome to this episode of Inside the OSD podcast, where it's all about the kids.
- 0:30Here is your host, lifelong educator, and our superintendent, Dr.
- 0:34Leslie Bergstrom.
- 0:40SPEAKER3: I'm here at Oregon High School with one of our student council members, Nate Modjeski.
- 0:46Nate, welcome to Inside the OSD.
- 0:48We're excited to have you on our podcast and know this is going to be a popular topic.
- 0:53So could you start by introducing yourself and your role on student council to our listeners?
- 0:58SPEAKER4: Yeah, thank you. I'm the class representative for the junior class of the Oregon Student Council, and we're organizing a dress drive right now.
- 1:05SPEAKER3: Very nice. So juniors are the class that put on prom.
- 1:09I think that if any of us have been to high school in America, we know that.
- 1:12So you're preparing for prom and how is the planning been going?
- 1:16SPEAKER4: It's been good. They started pretty early.
- 1:18It's in May, so we got lots of time ahead of us.
- 1:20We just had a meeting during lunch the other day where they pick out playlists and songs and getting kind of a theme established for prom.
- 1:27SPEAKER3: Oooh, what's the theme?
- 1:29SPEAKER4: We've got a couple different options.
- 1:30One is Parisian themed.
- 1:33Um, I think another one was just like nighttime themed, all like dark navy colors.
- 1:38And there are a couple of different options.
- 1:40SPEAKER3: Very nice. So is there anything you can share that was decided recently or, you know, is it really all pretty much up in the air other than the date?
- 1:50And when is that?
- 1:50SPEAKER4: It is mostly up in the air, but May 13th is locked down.
- 1:55I'm pulling for Paris theme, though.
- 1:57Are you? That'd be cool.
- 1:58SPEAKER3: Yes, Parisian theme.
- 2:00That's always fun.
- 2:01Where is it going to be?
- 2:02SPEAKER4: It's going to be in downtown Madison at the same venue as last year.
- 2:06It's kind of tough to get a reservation now, but -- It is!
- 2:09SPEAKER3: It is. But it worked very well.
- 2:11I believe it was in on the Park last year, right?
- 2:14Yeah, very nice.
- 2:15So there's a ton of preparations that go into hosting the prom, right?
- 2:21Getting it all together.
- 2:22But attending the prom, there's a lot that goes into that, too.
- 2:24And the biggest thing is probably, what are you going to wear?
- 2:28So student council is helping with this by holding a formal wear drive, which is really cool.
- 2:33So tell me how you came up with this great idea.
- 2:36SPEAKER4: Well, it came from Anna Gavin and Ms.
- 2:38Kuehl. They told us, "Hey, we want to figure out a way for more students to get their hands on formalwear and dresses that maybe can't afford them or are
- 2:45looking for a more sustainable option." And we took it from there and talked and talked and talked about it and kind of hammer it out what we've got going
- 2:53now. Well, how does it work?
- 2:55SPEAKER3: How and when will students go shopping?
- 2:57How do you donate and then how do you shop?
- 2:59SPEAKER4: So for the rest of this week, there will be collection boxes in the front office at OHS and in student services where people can come, bring their pants, dress
- 3:09shirts, clothes, dresses, shoes, the whole nine yards come drop them off in those boxes.
- 3:16And at the end of the week, when I pick them all up and put them away for Saturday the 11th and put all of them out in the gym on a big display that
- 3:25people can come walk through.
- 3:26SPEAKER3: Are there any other places other than the school you can drop it off?
- 3:29Or really, is the school the only place?
- 3:30SPEAKER4: They'll be boxes, hopefully at Kickback and Firefly by the end of the week.
- 3:34SPEAKER3: Oh well that'll be really convenient for people.
- 3:36That's nice. And I love that it's dresses, but also that it's all formalwear because people may choose to wear a variety of things.
- 3:46And I think that a lot of young people who wore pants probably, you know, you wear them one year or the next year, you want to do something different.
- 3:55You're never going to wear these fancy pants again.
- 3:57So, I mean, it works for everybody.
- 3:59SPEAKER4: Exactly. And you can pay it forward and come find clothes for yourself and pass on pass on the stuff that doesn't fit anymore.
- 4:05SPEAKER3: I absolutely love it.
- 4:07So I know that there are people who want to help.
- 4:10Is there anything other than donation, anything that anybody can do?
- 4:13Donating would be awesome because I think so many of us have closets with, if nothing else, for the adults who have classes with your children's prom dresses
- 4:22or formalwear in them.
- 4:24So I can think of several things I can donate right now.
- 4:27But other than donation, is there any other way to help?
- 4:29SPEAKER4: I'd say reach out to your friends.
- 4:31Get, get -- do the collection for us.
- 4:33Grab those dresses. Come drop them all off for us.
- 4:36Um, I think that that really helps.
- 4:38SPEAKER3: Very nice.
- 4:39So what's up next for student council?
- 4:41What other projects do you have coming up?
- 4:43SPEAKER4: Well, we're working on really hammering out prom, first of all.
- 4:46Everybody's focused on that.
- 4:47And then we'll be starting our new class projects pretty soon featuring -- this is kind of insider information, I guess, but featuring puppy yoga.
- 4:56One of those days we're going to have a -- yeah, figure out an event where people can do yoga with puppies to kind of promote a healthy mindset.
- 5:05SPEAKER3: Well, I absolutely love that.
- 5:07But who are you going to do puppy yoga with?
- 5:10Is that the Dane County Humane Society or how do they do it?
- 5:12SPEAKER4: I guess that's kind of TBD, but there are other projects going on with them that we might be able to collaborate.
- 5:17SPEAKER3: That is very fun.
- 5:18So thank you so much for your time today.
- 5:21Yeah. We know you came in extra early for the podcast today and have a full day ahead of you, so we appreciate your time.
- 5:28We will be excited to hear more about the formalwear drive and the big evening as plans move forward.
- 5:34If you have formalwear items to donate, you can take them to the Firefly Coffeehouse, Kickback Cafe, or the Oregon High School main office.
- 5:43The deadline for donating items is this Friday, March 10th.
