- 0:13AST Space Mobile Among the companies in our portfolio, AST
- 0:18Space Mobile presents the widest range of potential outcomes.
- 0:22AST is developing a space based cellular broadband network using
- 0:27a constellation of satellites that will communicate directly
- 0:29with unmodified smartphones using the same cellular bands as
- 0:33terrestrial towers. If successful users will never
- 0:37be out of cellular range. Their network will provide
- 0:40coverage in areas where traditional cell towers cannot
- 0:43reach, enabling users to stream Netflix in the middle of the
- 0:46ocean using their unmodified iPhone.
- 0:50Market Opportunity The market AST is addressing is enormous,
- 0:54encompassing military applications, first responder
- 0:57services, primary mobile Internet access and wireless
- 1:01coverage for areas not currently served by land based cell
- 1:04towers. The company plans to launch 248
- 1:07satellites into low Earth orbit. Each satellite unfolds like an
- 1:11origami creation to reach 700 square feet in size, half a
- 1:16basketball court. The combination of low Earth
- 1:18orbit proximity, satellite size and hundreds of patents enables
- 1:22high speed voice and data connectivity from unmodified
- 1:25smartphones. Strategic Partnerships.
- 1:28AST will work with existing telecom companies leveraging
- 1:32their broad reach spectrum billing systems and customer
- 1:35support infrastructure. Current partnerships include
- 1:38AT&T, Verizon, Google, Samsung, Vodafone, Rakatan and dozens of
- 1:43cellular network operators that collectively reach more than 3
- 1:46billion people. Current Status The company
- 1:50currently has five satellites in orbit that are effectively proof
- 1:53of concept and for testing. Their plan is to launch an
- 1:57additional 60 satellites by the end of Q12026 management
- 2:01projects. They will reach cash flow break
- 2:03even excluding growth CapEx by the end of 2025 when they have
- 2:0725 satellites in orbit. The revenue ramp should be steep
- 2:11in the back half of 2025 as satellites come online.
- 2:15The company has approximately S 1.5 billion in cash to fund
- 2:18their next growth phase. Competitive landscape Starlink
- 2:23is often cited as a competitor and has a partnership with
- 2:26T-Mobile. However, Starlink entered the
- 2:29direct to consumer space via acquisition and their current
- 2:32T-Mobile service is limited to texting.
- 2:35Similarly, Apple offers a satellite service with very
- 2:38limited capability that remains free to users.
- 2:41The market is large enough to support multiple players.
- 2:45ASTS primary differentiation is their satellite size, which
- 2:49provides both higher capacity and broadband capability on
- 2:52unmodified phones. Defense opportunities.
- 2:57There is potentially a very large government business
- 2:59opportunity. One of Trump's executive orders
- 3:02called for creation of a Golden Dome, directing the Department
- 3:06of Defense to develop A next generation missile shield.
- 3:09Trump's recently passed Big Beautiful bill provided $25
- 3:13billion in funding for the Golden Dome, with AST and
- 3:16Starlink cited as potential vendors.
- 3:19ASTES role in the Golden Dome is not yet formalized, but there
- 3:24have been indicators suggesting it could be significant.
- 3:27The company can also provide GPS alternatives valuable to the
- 3:30military where GPS is susceptible to jamming.
- 3:34First Responder market. AST is also partnering with both
- 3:38AT&T and Verizon on their first responder offerings.
- 3:42This partnership will provide .11 coverage in national parks
- 3:46and other areas with limited cell tower coverage.
- 3:49While commercial details are not public, defense and 1st
- 3:52responder applications are expected to provide the best
- 3:55monetization of limited capacity during the initial years when
- 3:59capacity constraints exist. Market sizing and economics
- 4:04Given the early stage nature of the business, pricing and
- 4:07adoption rates remain speculative.
- 4:09Carriers will likely segment their markets with tiered usage
- 4:13at different price points, catering to off grid residents
- 4:16and outdoor enthusiasts at the high end and Peace of Mind
- 4:19subscribers at the low end. Demand will also vary by
- 4:22geography, with some regions like continental Europe having
- 4:26better existing cell coverage than others.
- 4:28Through current partnerships, AST has reached to nearly 3
- 4:32billion subscribers globally. Many are in markets that will be
- 4:35difficult to monetize at high rates, but focusing on the US,
- 4:39Canada, Japan, Australia and Europe yields over billion cell
- 4:43phone subscribers. Accounting for duplicate
- 4:45subscribers, the numbers become compelling with greater than two
- 4:49degrees penetration in these markets.
- 4:52Before considering defense and 1st responder opportunities, the
- 4:55economics become very attractive assuming higher adoption rates,
- 4:59pricing, margins and valuation multiples.
- 5:02Given the market size, various scenarios can generate
- 5:05substantial free cash flow projections.
- 5:08I am confident that if the technology works and achieves
- 5:11modest adoption, the financial model will be successful.
- 5:14However, given the wide range of possible adoption rates,
- 5:18potential pricing, margins and investor multiples, presenting a
- 5:23single scenario would imply a level of precision and
- 5:25confidence. I do not possess investment
- 5:28rationale. Many scenarios support
- 5:31significantly higher valuations. This business has attributes
- 5:35conducive to fast growth leveraging existing mobile
- 5:38network operators, customer bases, AT&T, Verizon, etcetera,
- 5:43as well as the billing and customer support infrastructure.
- 5:46The company will also leverage existing hardware, requiring no
- 5:50specialized hardware purchases from consumers.
- 5:53ASTS share price has more than doubled since our initial
- 5:56purchase, which began as a smaller starter position that
- 5:59has grown through appreciation and additional purchases.
- 6:03While AST carries more regulatory and execution risk
- 6:06than our typical investments, it also possesses several
- 6:09attributes. We seek high insider ownership,
- 6:13CEO owns over 30% recurring revenue potential and operating
- 6:18leverage due to very low variable costs.
- 6:21Additionally, the outcome is potentially very asymmetric with
- 6:25substantially more upside than downside.
- 6:27I believe that it has a high expected value, albeit with a
- 6:30very wide range of outcomes and uncertain timing, but multi year
- 6:34runway acknowledgement. The AST investment would not
- 6:38have occurred without Ryan O'Connor at above of Gods of
- 6:42Crossroads Capital who flagged this opportunity for me in Omaha
- 6:46at the Berkshire Hathaway meeting.
