San Antonio’s river warriors are in a race against time to stop invasive pink bubble-gum-looking apple snails from taking over the river — and they’re doing it with kayaks, egg-picking volunteers, and underwater barriers, all while keeping costs under $2,500. Since 2019, crews have removed 43,000 snails and 118,000 egg clusters, but with these critters laying up to 2,000 eggs every 10-14 days, they’re doubling cleanup frequency to stay ahead.
