- 0:55Speaker 3: the way. For today's episode, I am chatting with WNBA
- 1:00Speaker 3: player Kelsey Plumb.
- 1:04Speaker 2: There's no two ways about it. I walked away from
- 1:06Speaker 2: my conversation with Kelsey.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Feeling really thankful, firstly that she's here to tell her
- 1:14Speaker 3: story and also that in doing so she is helping
- 1:18Speaker 3: so many people, myself included. For episode two twenty nine,
- 1:22Speaker 3: Kelsey shares what it was like for her to grow
- 1:24Speaker 3: up in a house of athletes and the way that
- 1:27Speaker 3: family competition really impacted her mindset, both on and off
- 1:31Speaker 3: the court. She talked to me about what it was
- 1:34Speaker 3: like to be one of the best college athletes of
- 1:36Speaker 3: her time and unfortunately the negative impact that had on her.
- 1:41Speaker 3: And then we really get into it as Kelsey talks
- 1:44Speaker 3: about navigating a period of time where she had suicidal thoughts,
- 1:49Speaker 3: not wanting to live anymore, going as far as sitting
- 1:53Speaker 3: on top of a tall parking structure with her feet
- 1:56Speaker 3: dangling over the edge, wondering how her family would feel
- 2:01Speaker 3: if she decided to take the leap. We also talk
- 2:04Speaker 3: about the hard emotions that came with draft day, something
- 2:07Speaker 3: that she had looked forward to her whole.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Life, but was nothing like she had imagined.
- 2:13Speaker 3: We also touch on coming out of the fog of
- 2:16Speaker 3: depression and what her best advice is for anyone who
- 2:19Speaker 3: can relate with her story, plus her excitement for life
- 2:23Speaker 3: these days playing with the aces out in Vegas, her
- 2:27Speaker 3: morning ritual that helps her see the good in each
- 2:30Speaker 3: and every single day, and also her exciting new partnerships
- 2:34Speaker 3: with both GSTQ and under Armour. I'm thankful for this conversation,
- 2:38Speaker 3: and I also know that it does touch on a
- 2:42Speaker 3: lot of sensitive topics.
- 2:44Speaker 2: So if you or.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, know
- 2:48Speaker 3: that you are not alone.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Period.
- 2:51Speaker 3: There are resources in the show notes of organizations like
- 2:55Speaker 3: the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. They offer
- 2:58Speaker 3: a twenty four to seven hotline that you can call
- 3:02Speaker 3: for help. That's one eight hundred sixty six' two. Help
- 3:05Speaker 3: that's one eight hundred sixty six two.

- 3:14Speaker 3: social it's over At hurdle. PODCASTS i am over At

- 3:37Speaker 2: Good how are? You i'm so.
- 3:39Speaker 3: GOOD i ADMITTEDLY i am a little, raspy BUT i
- 3:43Speaker 3: do need to tell you that you have an excellent podcasting.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Voice oh, wow you know, what this is the first
- 3:50Speaker 2: Time i've heard, this so thank. You it's like smooth and.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Sexy I've i've definitely listened to maybe like two to
- 3:57Speaker 3: Three Kelsey plum podcasts now And i'm, like, oh this
- 4:00Speaker 3: is a vibe.
- 4:04Speaker 1: SEXY i don't Think i've ever been told that my
- 4:06Speaker 1: voice is, Sexy SO i FEEL i feel empowered right.
- 4:09Speaker 3: NOW i, figure IF i gas you up from the get,
- 4:11Speaker 3: go then this is just gonna go really well for.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Us and then also speaking of gassing you, up you
- 4:18Speaker 3: and the NEW gstq, Photos i'm, like my mind is
- 4:22Speaker 3: you look also, Again i'm not hitting on, you But
- 4:25Speaker 3: i'm just telling you.
- 4:29Speaker 1: It's.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Fire thank.
- 4:31Speaker 1: You that was such a fun. Time the crew was.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Awesome it was in like a really cute Like airbnb
- 4:37Speaker 1: house In. Vegas the vibe was. Immaculate the clothes dope
- 4:42Speaker 1: made for women by. WOMEN i think that's why you
- 4:44Speaker 1: kind of see the energy come out in the pictures
- 4:46Speaker 1: because you feel comfortable wearing the. Clothes AND i don't
- 4:48Speaker 1: know if you've gotten to experience wearing ANY gsq, stuff
- 4:53Speaker 1: but if, not we need to put you on the mailing.
- 4:54Speaker 3: List need to get on that mailing. LIST i THINK
- 4:57Speaker 3: i have some stuff coming my way. Soon by, Regardless i'm,
- 5:02Speaker 3: YEAH i was, like, wow this definitely makes me want
- 5:04Speaker 3: to get on the bandwagon for.
- 5:06Speaker 2: SURE i love. That that's what we want.
- 5:09Speaker 3: For sure For Share and so you're a relatively new
- 5:12Speaker 3: ambassador for them and also last, WEEK i, believe If
- 5:16Speaker 3: i'm not losing complete track of, time WHICH i might.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Be you also announced your new partnership with Under.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Armour, Yes i'm super excited about that as. Well you,
- 5:25Speaker 1: KNOW gstq is off the, court you, know, fashion and
- 5:29Speaker 1: then obviously Under armour is on the, court which is
- 5:33Speaker 1: Something i'm also super passionate. ABOUT i just really believe
- 5:36Speaker 1: in where they're headed and what they're wanting to do
- 5:39Speaker 1: for women and their. Vision it's pretty powerful to see
- 5:43Speaker 1: a company kind of step up to the plate and
- 5:44Speaker 1: want to you, know take a swing at kind of
- 5:47Speaker 1: this new space that we're in right and so there's
- 5:50Speaker 1: a ton of opportunity with women in sports right, now
- 5:53Speaker 1: And i'm just grateful that they see WHAT i see
- 5:55Speaker 1: and so being, ALIGNED i think it's going to be
- 5:58Speaker 1: a lot of things to.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Come when you say this new space that we're, in
- 6:04Speaker 3: what do you mean by?
- 6:05Speaker 2: THAT i, mean, shoot where do we? Start women in sports.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Has been you, know, growing and we're at this time
- 6:14Speaker 1: right now in especially obviously look in The United states
- 6:17Speaker 1: as a, woman there's more opportunities than.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Ever so it's kind of like this.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Middle ground of, like obviously you want to be grateful
- 6:24Speaker 1: for things that have, come like opportunities That i've gotten
- 6:27Speaker 1: that my mom wasn't you, know able to. Have but
- 6:30Speaker 1: at the same, TIME uh kind of pushing that needle
- 6:33Speaker 1: forward for the next generation to come that they can
- 6:35Speaker 1: have more.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Opportunities and better opportunities THAN i.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Had and, SO i, mean viewership is up ON tv
- 6:42Speaker 1: the W Nba playoffs for the highest viewed that it's been,
- 6:45Speaker 1: ever millions and millions of people tuning. In you, know
- 6:48Speaker 1: salaries are being, raised there's a lot of being a
- 6:51Speaker 1: lot of money being put in behind, women and that's
- 6:54Speaker 1: what's so interesting about this space right, now especially in.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Basketball you, know THE. Nba i'm, Sorry i'm going on
- 6:59Speaker 1: a little bit of a tangent, here but THE nba is
- 7:03Speaker 1: one hundred years, old, right or seventy five years, old,
- 7:06Speaker 1: Right and THE wnba is twenty five years. Old so
- 7:07Speaker 1: where we're at right now at twenty five compared to
- 7:10Speaker 1: where THE nba was at at twenty, five we're way
- 7:13Speaker 1: ahead without the. Investment and we know that when we
- 7:16Speaker 1: invest in, women it pays. Off so we're, working we're we're,
- 7:20Speaker 1: climbing and it's going to take a little, bit but
- 7:23Speaker 1: the direction is. Tremendous the direction is.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Tremendous to fact check, here we've got seventy six years
- 7:29Speaker 3: on THE.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Nba seventy, SIX i knew it wasn't one. HUNDRED i was,
- 7:32Speaker 2: like let me go. Back it just feels like.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Forever BUT i echo your sentiments here about how rad
- 7:36Speaker 3: it is to see finally not just broader investment in women's,
- 7:41Speaker 3: sports but also just the viewership and the attention that
- 7:46Speaker 3: is finally being allegated to women's.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Sports it's it's really awesome to.
- 7:51Speaker 1: SEE i mean it, is and when you think about,
- 7:54Speaker 1: it there's less than five percent of women's sports broadcasting ON.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Tv so like even for this final windows that we do,
- 8:00Speaker 1: have we're making, big you, know. Strides and so just
- 8:04Speaker 1: imagine if we're put on prime time in a big
- 8:07Speaker 1: time you know, category whether that's ON espn at you,
- 8:12Speaker 1: know noon On. Sunday like there's just certain slots that
- 8:16Speaker 1: we're starting to be able to get to open people's,
- 8:18Speaker 1: eyes and the products so good that when people tune,
- 8:21Speaker 1: in they, stay you. Know so we only need we
- 8:25Speaker 1: only need that one, opportunity and we're starting to get
- 8:27Speaker 1: those and that's what is really exciting about.
- 8:29Speaker 2: This, yeah and it's been awesome for.
- 8:31Speaker 3: ME i, MEAN i love a few blocks From, barclays
- 8:34Speaker 3: so for me to be able to walk over and
- 8:36Speaker 3: see The liberty and see where it has where it
- 8:40Speaker 3: is now versus where it, was and like the audience
- 8:44Speaker 3: growing and the excitement, growing it's just it's.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Phenomenal it's.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Phenomenal and they that's, like that's a great product that
- 8:52Speaker 1: they're putting out on the floor right Like barclays and
- 8:54Speaker 1: The liberty is a franchise that's invested and it's really
- 8:57Speaker 1: cool to, see you, know us here In vegas at The.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Aces we Have Mark davis backing.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Us and, again you, KNOW i always tell people don't support.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Me you Know i'm not. Here you don't go Support
- 9:08Speaker 1: lebron when you go watch and. Play you go watch
- 9:10Speaker 1: him play because he can. HOOP i want you to
- 9:12Speaker 1: come watch me play BECAUSE i can. Hoop and there's
- 9:14Speaker 1: a big difference. Between you, know we're not here asking for.
- 9:16Speaker 1: CHARITY i. Don't i'm not asking for. ANYTHING i want
- 9:19Speaker 1: to earn your. RESPECT i just need the opportunity to do.
- 9:22Speaker 3: It, yeah and you mentioned your mom before also an
- 9:26Speaker 3: accomplished volleyball. Player your dad an athlete as, well so
- 9:30Speaker 3: tell us a little bit about what it was like
- 9:33Speaker 3: growing up in a household with two parents with an athletic.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Background pure. Chaos you're.
- 9:41Speaker 1: CHAOS i MEAN i have three, siblings all four of
- 9:44Speaker 1: us Play division one, sports and both my parents did as.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Well like you, said and WHEN i tell you just
- 9:51Speaker 1: everything was competitive from the first person to the car
- 9:55Speaker 1: to you got to finish your, plate you got to
- 9:58Speaker 1: box out so no one's, taking you, know chicken off
- 10:00Speaker 1: of your plate at. DINNER i, mean it's it got,
- 10:03Speaker 1: honestly it's it's pretty like. Extreme BUT i DO i
- 10:07Speaker 1: do know THAT i think that competitiveness has really, helped you,
- 10:11Speaker 1: know everyone in my family be super. Successful and it's
- 10:14Speaker 1: hard to, uh it's instill in that later in. Life you,
- 10:17Speaker 1: know when you have an early dose of competitiveness when
- 10:20Speaker 1: you're growing, up you just want to win in, everything
- 10:22Speaker 1: AND i think that translates into a lot of facets
- 10:25Speaker 1: off the court outside of.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Basketball that perspective comes with years of, reflection right because
- 10:32Speaker 3: at the, time did you feel as though that nurturing
- 10:38Speaker 3: aspect of your upbringing was always in your best?
- 10:42Speaker 1: Interest, well you, know it's so, funny you don't really
- 10:45Speaker 1: notice your family if something is like out of the,
- 10:49Speaker 1: ordinary until you spend time with other people's family and you're.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Like you guys don't do.
- 10:53Speaker 1: That you guys don't fight each other for you, know
- 10:57Speaker 1: who has to do the dishes or my dad used
- 10:59Speaker 1: to we used to shoot in the backyard for who
- 11:02Speaker 1: had to pick up the dog.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Poop like you, guys don't you know WHAT i?
- 11:05Speaker 1: Mean and SO i these little things were just so
- 11:08Speaker 1: normal in my life UNTIL i probably became an, adult
- 11:11Speaker 1: and then you start to hear other people's childhoods and you're, like,
- 11:13Speaker 1: wow that that is not like my. Childhood BUT i
- 11:17Speaker 1: thought my parents did a tremendous. Job they were always super.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Supportive they were always you, know whatever you, need very,
- 11:22Speaker 1: empowering very. Uplifting AND i feel like as a, kid
- 11:26Speaker 1: when you grow up with that and there's that type
- 11:28Speaker 1: of like, confidence you really truly believe WHATEVER i want to,
- 11:31Speaker 1: DO i can. DO i just have to be able
- 11:33Speaker 1: to like put the work. In SO i, Mean i'm
- 11:35Speaker 1: super grateful my parents put in a lot of work
- 11:37Speaker 1: AND i thought THEY i thought they did a great.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Job but then you continue to go and put in
- 11:43Speaker 3: a lot of work that helps you really stand in
- 11:46Speaker 3: your power within that. CONFIDENCE i, mean tell us a
- 11:50Speaker 3: little bit about what it was like as you really
- 11:53Speaker 3: started to get more and more into basketball on the.
- 11:56Speaker 3: COURT i know your sisters stuck with the volleyball side of.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Things, yeah it was definitely a volleyball. FAMILY i knew pretty.
- 12:04Speaker 1: EARLY i was, like, ah this is not WHAT i
- 12:08Speaker 1: want to.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Do, no no disrespect to.
- 12:09Speaker 1: VOLLEYBALL i love, volleyball but it's just it Wasn't it
- 12:12Speaker 1: wasn't my. Love and, YEAH i, knew you, know basketball
- 12:17Speaker 1: pretty early. ON i think about ten years. OLD i
- 12:19Speaker 1: told my. MOM i told, HER i just want to
- 12:21Speaker 1: let you KNOW i will be playing in THE. WNBA
- 12:25Speaker 1: i said that pretty early. On AND i think, that you,
- 12:27Speaker 1: know she had a, Choice like she could have said, like,
- 12:30Speaker 1: hey let's pick something a little bit more, realistic or you,
- 12:35Speaker 1: know maybe maybe had some thoughts on, it but she
- 12:38Speaker 1: was very, Like, okay well let me know WHAT i
- 12:40Speaker 1: can do to help. You AND i just really appreciate.
- 12:43Speaker 1: That you, Know i'm not the biggest and the fastest
- 12:46Speaker 1: and the, strongest BUT i think, that like you, know,
- 12:49Speaker 1: competitiveness what we talked about, earlier that is really the
- 12:53Speaker 1: difference maker in a lot of, ways and SO i
- 12:55Speaker 1: don't plan on losing that anytime.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Soon what did that level of support look like in?
- 13:02Speaker 3: Practice when you tell your mom that's at ten years,
- 13:04Speaker 3: old and then you go on to become such an
- 13:07Speaker 3: accomplished player even at a young, Age what did that look?
- 13:12Speaker 3: Like was it attending your? Games was it practicing with?
- 13:15Speaker 3: You tell us a little bit about.
- 13:17Speaker 2: That both my parents were super.
- 13:19Speaker 1: INVOLVED i, MEAN i think WHAT i admire most looking
- 13:22Speaker 1: back now is that they had, said, listen whatever you
- 13:26Speaker 1: want to, do we're, in but you're gonna have to
- 13:30Speaker 1: like tell, us we're not going to like schedule you
- 13:33Speaker 1: and sign you up for all this. Stuff SO i
- 13:35Speaker 1: REMEMBER i WOULD i would be like ten or, eleven
- 13:37Speaker 1: And i'd have to find the team On, google call the,
- 13:41Speaker 1: coach tell, them, Hey i'm coming to, tryouts fill out the,
- 13:46Speaker 1: paperwork print. Out do you remember the map quest like, now.
- 13:50Speaker 2: FIRST i remember the map wive kealty.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Pronounce map, quest staple, it hand it to, him tell, them, hey,
- 13:55Speaker 1: listen we got to be there at eight, thirty so
- 13:58Speaker 1: that means we've got to leave at seven. Thirty and
- 14:00Speaker 1: this was me from you, know, ten, eleven, Twelve AND
- 14:03Speaker 1: i think that like ownership and level of independence as
- 14:07Speaker 1: we both, know like in anything in, life, right if
- 14:09Speaker 1: you if you do the work to get to that,
- 14:12Speaker 1: point you're gonna practice really hard because you had to, map,
- 14:16Speaker 1: quest find, it call the, coach like it matters To you're,
- 14:18Speaker 1: invested you. Know SO i think my parents taught me
- 14:21Speaker 1: that really, early to be invested and whatever you, do
- 14:24Speaker 1: like do with all your. Heart and SO i think
- 14:27Speaker 1: that that was one of the things THAT i took from.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Them but they WERE i mean every, tournament every, practice every,
- 14:33Speaker 1: game somebody was, there somebody was straightened, off somebody was.
- 14:37Speaker 3: There, yeah it's impressive that at age eleven you had
- 14:40Speaker 3: the concept of leave time. MASTERED i have, friends like
- 14:44Speaker 3: even in my mid twenties when we would have a
- 14:46Speaker 3: plan And i'd be, like, no but just because dinner's
- 14:48Speaker 3: at seven, thirty you have to leave at six.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Thirty, oh trialing. Error it wasn't always it wasn't always that.
- 14:57Speaker 2: SMOOTH i tell you. That, okay, okay so you excel
- 15:03Speaker 2: would be like an.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Understatement in high, school you are named McDonald's All, american
- 15:08Speaker 3: you qualify to participate in The All American Girls. Game
- 15:11Speaker 3: do you know at this point when you commit to
- 15:15Speaker 3: going To washington that this is truly gonna be, like all,
- 15:20Speaker 3: Right i'm heading in to THE.
- 15:21Speaker 2: WNBA i just never had a. PLAN.
- 15:24Speaker 1: B looking back, now it's always something That i'm, like
- 15:28Speaker 1: that was really, ballsy like BECAUSE i didn't realize the
- 15:34Speaker 1: jump from high school to college in the terms of
- 15:37Speaker 1: the competition and the skill, level and then also the
- 15:40Speaker 1: jump from college to PRO i didn't factor any of that.
- 15:43Speaker 1: IN i just kind of was, Like, yeah this is
- 15:45Speaker 1: What i'm gonna. Do but, YEAH i never had a.
- 15:47Speaker 2: PLAN.
- 15:48Speaker 1: B i JUST i just. WAS i was in AND
- 15:52Speaker 1: i think that's why it worked BECAUSE i was never
- 15:54Speaker 1: anytime it got. Hard it wasn't like if this doesn't work,
- 15:57Speaker 1: Out i'll go back to school and get my degree and,
- 15:59Speaker 1: whatever Or i'm gonna try.
- 16:01Speaker 2: This it was, Like, nah this is, hard and.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Yeah but are You are you meaning to tell me
- 16:06Speaker 3: that you never had one of those moments like being
- 16:08Speaker 3: a kid being heavy in sport that you wanted to
- 16:12Speaker 3: throw on the.
- 16:12Speaker 1: TOWEL I i just don't THINK i ever considered another.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Life AND i KNOW i know that sounds, absurd but,
- 16:22Speaker 2: NO i MEAN i think it's.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Admirable, yeah looking back, now IF i IF i, like for,
- 16:26Speaker 1: EXAMPLE i think IF i was a mom AND i
- 16:28Speaker 1: had a daughter that was saying WHAT i, said it
- 16:31Speaker 1: would be really hard not to, interject not in a
- 16:35Speaker 1: way of LIKE i don't believe in, you but.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Just like, hey, honey like let's let's also think about
- 16:40Speaker 2: this or.
- 16:40Speaker 1: That AND i was Just my parents Were i'm sure
- 16:45Speaker 1: they thought, it BUT i was just in And i've
- 16:50Speaker 1: just been in And i'll continue to be in UNTIL
- 16:54Speaker 1: i Decide i'm done.
- 16:55Speaker 2: With, it UNTIL i Decide i'm done with.
- 16:57Speaker 3: It, WELL i don't want to jump too, much but
- 17:01Speaker 3: you go through your college career and you finally get this,
- 17:07Speaker 3: moment this big moment that you were thinking about since
- 17:10Speaker 3: you were ten years, old to play in A, wnba
- 17:14Speaker 3: and you get drafted and it's not what you.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Envisioned tell us about.
- 17:19Speaker 1: THAT i prepared my whole life for that, moment kind
- 17:23Speaker 1: of like what we talked, about, right that was only
- 17:26Speaker 1: like the only thing THAT i really like fully believed
- 17:30Speaker 1: in AND i KNEW i was going to.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Do AND i felt like.
- 17:34Speaker 1: WHEN i got, THERE i was supposed to feel like
- 17:37Speaker 1: kind of, relieved you, know or proud or, Excited and,
- 17:41Speaker 1: actually WHEN i finally got to that moment of being,
- 17:44Speaker 1: DRAFTED i felt so. EMPTY i realized that my full
- 17:48Speaker 1: identity was just caught up in performance in basketball and,
- 17:53Speaker 1: accolades and that was my. Value And i've realized pretty
- 17:58Speaker 1: quickly in that, Moment i'm, Like i'm in. TROUBLE i
- 18:02Speaker 1: don't know exactly how to get out of this right,
- 18:04Speaker 1: now and it took me years to get out of.
- 18:05Speaker 1: It BUT i was in like a hole in terms
- 18:09Speaker 1: of like depression and feeling just very low about myself
- 18:13Speaker 1: Because i'm, like if this is ALL i can contribute
- 18:15Speaker 1: to the, world, LIKE i.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Don't love.
- 18:19Speaker 1: IT i don't love WHERE i am right. Now and
- 18:21Speaker 1: SO i think that that was a pretty low moment for. Me, yeah, Absolutely.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Yeah and what would you say contributed to this sense
- 18:31Speaker 3: of basketball being your, identity especially in the years leading
- 18:35Speaker 3: up to that, moment perhaps during.
- 18:37Speaker 1: COLLEGE i think that AS i performed in, college just
- 18:42Speaker 1: kept getting better and. Better the surrounding, people not necessarily,
- 18:49Speaker 1: intentionally but their identity of how they see you is
- 18:54Speaker 1: the value that you bring to the basketball, court and
- 18:57Speaker 1: really as a human or as a, person it's a
- 19:00Speaker 1: it falls to the, wayside you, Know and SO i
- 19:03Speaker 1: just kept performing and playing better and better and, better
- 19:05Speaker 1: AND i just felt so neglected as a. PERSON i
- 19:08Speaker 1: felt like people didn't see me as a, human and
- 19:12Speaker 1: SO i felt kind of like a people, pleaser like
- 19:14Speaker 1: maybe the BETTER i, play the more That i'll get
- 19:18Speaker 1: like love.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Or attention or you, know.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Support AND i think that was a combination of, Obviously
- 19:24Speaker 1: i'm young And i'm trying to go for something that's pretty.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Gutsy but at the same, TIME i felt LIKE i
- 19:28Speaker 1: didn't really have anyone to lean on in terms of, like,
- 19:33Speaker 1: no don't get, wrong my family and friends were super.
- 19:34Speaker 1: SUPPORTIVE i just think they knew how to support me with.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Basketball you, know it was kind of like nothing really
- 19:42Speaker 1: else got like mattered or which NOW i think about
- 19:46Speaker 1: the big, picture everything else matters a lot more than.
- 19:49Speaker 3: That, yeah, yeah did you at the time vocalize any
- 19:56Speaker 3: of this to?
- 19:57Speaker 2: ANYONE i didn't tell. ANYONE i.
- 19:59Speaker 1: WAS i was being treated heavily for depression and anxiety
- 20:05Speaker 1: and suicidal like. IDEATIONS i was on, medications sleeping, medications
- 20:10Speaker 1: AND i only had talked to my psychologists about.
- 20:14Speaker 3: It do you remember the day that you made the
- 20:18Speaker 3: decision to tell your psychologist about what you were?
- 20:22Speaker 1: Feeling you, Know it's so interesting because it kind of happened.
- 20:26Speaker 1: ACCIDENTALLY i was working. OUT i was about to be
- 20:28Speaker 1: a senior in. COLLEGE i was running on the treadmill
- 20:31Speaker 1: AND i like felt LIKE i had like these massive
- 20:35Speaker 1: chest pains AND i almost like passed out. Right And
- 20:39Speaker 1: i'm in great shape and great, Health like this is really.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Abnormal they DID. Ekg they did blood. Tests then the
- 20:46Speaker 1: doctor brought me into the office and kind of closed
- 20:49Speaker 1: the door and he was, like, hey, listen before you,
- 20:52Speaker 1: REACT i just want you to think about. This and
- 20:55Speaker 1: at First i'm, LIKE i thought he's gonna tell me
- 20:57Speaker 1: THAT i have cancer or you know WHAT i. Mean
- 20:59Speaker 1: Like i'm rolling through my head figuring Out he's, like,
- 21:02Speaker 1: listen all these symptoms that you have and all these,
- 21:06Speaker 1: things we can't find anything on your labs other than
- 21:11Speaker 1: he was, LIKE i think, that you, know IF i
- 21:13Speaker 1: were to diagnose, YOU i think that you're dealing, with you,
- 21:16Speaker 1: know severe depression and. Anxiety and at that point in my,
- 21:20Speaker 1: LIFE i had never even heard that. Before you, know
- 21:23Speaker 1: it just didn't exist in my world or any like my.
- 21:26Speaker 1: FAMILY i had never heard of that, before and SO
- 21:29Speaker 1: i kind of just blew it. Off but it was
- 21:31Speaker 1: like a thing in my head that like kept it
- 21:34Speaker 1: didn't go, away you, know and so for MONTHS i
- 21:38Speaker 1: chewed on it and push it to the. Side and
- 21:40Speaker 1: we as we all, know you, know if we've ever
- 21:42Speaker 1: been to, therapy, like if you have something and you neglect,
- 21:45Speaker 1: it it's just going to keep growing until you address.
- 21:48Speaker 2: It and that's what did. It, BASICALLY i was kind
- 21:50Speaker 2: of forced to address.
- 21:51Speaker 1: It.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Yeah, also you mentioned suicidal.
- 21:55Speaker 3: Thoughts did you experience those before or after you cided
- 21:59Speaker 3: to start using maybe medication to deal with the repercussions
- 22:05Speaker 3: of your.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Depression it was. Both it was.
- 22:08Speaker 1: BOTH i had it before and then started taking, it
- 22:12Speaker 1: and you, KNOW i felt like a little bit better
- 22:15Speaker 1: for a, while but then LIKE i, didn't AND i
- 22:18Speaker 1: definitely had thoughts. After so it was it was really
- 22:23Speaker 1: before and. AFTER i don't feel like the medication really
- 22:26Speaker 1: treated my you, know my.
- 22:30Speaker 3: ISSUES i think that's what's so often not spoken about
- 22:34Speaker 3: about treatment for anxiety and depression is two part one
- 22:39Speaker 3: the fact that it does take a while for that
- 22:41Speaker 3: medication to start working. Right so usually by the point
- 22:45Speaker 3: that someone, says, OKAY i need, help they're so desperate
- 22:49Speaker 3: to feel, different and then you have to go through
- 22:51Speaker 3: this time period where it's, like, oh but this isn't
- 22:54Speaker 3: just going to be the flip of a, switch and
- 22:56Speaker 3: that is so.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Frustrating oh my, gosh it's such a great. Point we
- 23:00Speaker 2: don't talk about that.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Enough it's like we think that it's like with, admil
- 23:04Speaker 1: like you take it and then twenty minutes later you feel,
- 23:07Speaker 1: better like your headache or backache or. Whatever that's WHAT
- 23:10Speaker 1: i THOUGHT i was getting AND i did not get,
- 23:13Speaker 1: That and, uh you're. RIGHT i also don't feel LIKE
- 23:16Speaker 1: i addressed the because you can address the, symptoms BUT
- 23:19Speaker 1: i wasn't addressing the root of the, problem dealing, with you,
- 23:22Speaker 1: know things in my childhood and emotional, stuff THINGS i
- 23:25Speaker 1: had never talked, about my, feelings expressing, Things and SO
- 23:30Speaker 1: i feel LIKE, i obviously now looking, back understand that
- 23:35Speaker 1: dealing And i'm not saying this is with, everyone this
- 23:38Speaker 1: is with, me but dealing with those root issues then
- 23:41Speaker 1: took away my.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Symptoms when did you first seek out.
- 23:46Speaker 1: THERAPY i first sought out therapy after being SO i
- 23:56Speaker 1: was kind of like talking to a, psychologist but it.
- 23:58Speaker 1: WASN'T i don't THINK i was fully bought. IN i
- 24:02Speaker 1: THINK i started talking to someone like on my own
- 24:05Speaker 1: with my own will and you, know wanting to get
- 24:08Speaker 1: better after maybe year two of being a pro. A,
- 24:13Speaker 1: wow so a while after you recognize that you were
- 24:16Speaker 1: dealing with all of these.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Issues, yeah it was a.
- 24:20Speaker 1: While it was a while BECAUSE i kind of always
- 24:23Speaker 1: came from the idea of, like if you want to
- 24:26Speaker 1: figure it, out fix it. YOURSELF i didn't like it
- 24:30Speaker 1: was a pride, thing but it was also like a shame,
- 24:33Speaker 1: thing LIKE I i can't be telling people That i'm
- 24:36Speaker 1: dealing with, This LIKE i have a wonderful life AND
- 24:38Speaker 1: i have no excuse to be feeling like, this and
- 24:41Speaker 1: so it's just very like. SHAME i didn't want to
- 24:43Speaker 1: be expressing that type of you, know What i'm going,
- 24:48Speaker 1: through How i'm.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Feeling, yeah and that's totally understandable that you felt that
- 24:52Speaker 3: way because you were performing so, Well so for you
- 24:56Speaker 3: not to want to show people what you felt as
- 25:01Speaker 3: at the time was a sign of. Weakness, again it's totally. Understandable.
- 25:06Speaker 1: YEAH i MEAN i look back now AND i really
- 25:09Speaker 1: WISH i had a better. Understanding and that's WHY i
- 25:12Speaker 1: feel like Now i'm so open with my journey BECAUSE
- 25:15Speaker 1: i didn't fully, Connect like it's been a lot of
- 25:20Speaker 1: growth in the mental health space in terms of like
- 25:22Speaker 1: talking about, things but still there's a, stigma especially in college,
- 25:25Speaker 1: sports about like just dealing with it getting to the next,
- 25:30Speaker 1: day and there's not a lot of like mental, HEALTHINESS
- 25:33Speaker 1: i would. Say and so for, ME i feel like
- 25:36Speaker 1: anytime NOW i can reach out and talk to kids
- 25:39Speaker 1: that were in my spot to just tell them, like,
- 25:42Speaker 1: listen this is. This you're not, alone you. KNOW i
- 25:45Speaker 1: THOUGHT i was completely, alone AND i think that's why people.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Don't share totally.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Totally so if you were to think back to that,
- 25:51Speaker 3: time maybe around the time that you got, drafted what
- 25:57Speaker 3: do you, recall like if you were to look at
- 25:59Speaker 3: yourself in the, mirror what did you see looking back at?
- 26:02Speaker 1: You a, shadow just, empty no, identity just didn't know
- 26:09Speaker 1: WHO i, was didn't know WHAT.
- 26:11Speaker 2: I liked outside of. Basketball very, uh just very. Sad
- 26:18Speaker 2: yeah that's.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Not, me that's not my, personality you, Know and SO
- 26:21Speaker 1: i just didn't even recognize WHO i. Was, yeah, again so.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Understandable so you, mentioned of, course like let me know
- 26:28Speaker 3: if you don't want to chat on, this but you
- 26:29Speaker 3: also mentioned having suicidal. Thoughts did you ever genuinely get
- 26:34Speaker 3: to a place where you almost acted on.
- 26:38Speaker 1: That, yeah there were multiple times WHERE i, was you,
- 26:42Speaker 1: know on bridges looking over on parking structures with my feet,
- 26:47Speaker 1: dangling AND i JUST i would sit there for hours
- 26:51Speaker 1: and just think, about like contemplating what would, happen you, know,
- 26:58Speaker 1: like AND i think the one of the biggest things
- 27:00Speaker 1: that stopped me would be, like how would my.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Family feel if this was over for?
- 27:06Speaker 1: Me you? Know and SO i think that that always
- 27:09Speaker 1: was a big. Thing and then the other thing that
- 27:12Speaker 1: really always brought me back was feeling like there has
- 27:17Speaker 1: to be more AND i can't not experience it Before
- 27:21Speaker 1: i'm my time is, up you, know like there's got
- 27:24Speaker 1: to be. More and SO i felt like in those,
- 27:27Speaker 1: moments those were the two biggest thoughts that always hit,
- 27:30Speaker 1: me but definitely moments WHERE i contemplated many.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Times, yeah, yeah and in that thought process there's got
- 27:40Speaker 3: to be. More how did you come back to that
- 27:44Speaker 3: resounding thought on the night of the draft WHEN i
- 27:49Speaker 3: know that it was anything but what you expected it to.
- 27:53Speaker 2: BE i feel, like for.
- 27:57Speaker 1: ME I i, Mean i'm gonna be, honest from the
- 28:01Speaker 1: draft UNTIL i finally felt relief was.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Three four.
- 28:08Speaker 1: YEARS I, mean it wasn't like like you, said magic,
- 28:13Speaker 1: switch AND i was. BACK i honestly think tearing my
- 28:16Speaker 1: achilles was one of the biggest. BLESSINGS i still tell
- 28:20Speaker 1: people that to this day that happened to me BECAUSE
- 28:23Speaker 1: i was able, to like for the first time.
- 28:24Speaker 2: In my, life sit down and like completely.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Reset you, know when you tear your, achilles you're out
- 28:33Speaker 1: of basketball for at least eight, months like at, least
- 28:36Speaker 1: So i'm, like what else AM i gonna? Do LIKE
- 28:38Speaker 1: i need to like reidentify what's going on, SPIRITUALLY i
- 28:43Speaker 1: needed to connect better With. God AND i just felt
- 28:46Speaker 1: like it was the best reset that could have happened to.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Me so another really introest back to have our perspective
- 28:52Speaker 3: moment Where i'm sure at the time it was as
- 28:56Speaker 3: though basketball was the thing that you quote unquote did.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Well it's so.
- 29:00Speaker 1: INTERESTING i tore my, achilles and OBVIOUSLY i was really
- 29:03Speaker 1: upset because it, hurt AND i knew that it's a
- 29:06Speaker 1: serious injury and you're gonna be out for a. While
- 29:10Speaker 1: BUT i pretty much after that felt. Relief i'm, Like,
- 29:15Speaker 1: okay no one's expecting me to do anything right. NOW
- 29:20Speaker 1: i have all this time to like find myself and just.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Re set my.
- 29:30Speaker 1: LIFE i felt like my life was going in a
- 29:32Speaker 1: completely different trajectory than WHAT i wanted it to, go
- 29:36Speaker 1: and it was like an opportunity to just. Reset And
- 29:41Speaker 1: i'm so grateful for those like life changing, months life changing.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Months i'm not the same. Person i'm not the same,
- 29:48Speaker 1: Partner i'm not the same, daughter, friend teammate THAT i
- 29:53Speaker 1: was Pre, achilles and that was because of the TIME
- 29:56Speaker 1: i got to really look inside and dig deep and
- 30:00Speaker 1: figure out WHO i was going to.

- 32:54Speaker 3: do something that you hear often about individuals who go
- 32:59Speaker 3: through a time of deep depression and anxiety is that
- 33:03Speaker 3: they don't have a lot of recollection or memory from that.
- 33:07Speaker 3: Time do you feel like that holds true for? You
- 33:10Speaker 3: from those two three four years after getting drafted until
- 33:14Speaker 3: this pit stop in twenty twenty.
- 33:16Speaker 1: One even to this, Day i'll have people come up to, Me,
- 33:20Speaker 1: hey do you REMEMBER i.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Really couldn't tell.
- 33:23Speaker 1: YOU i mean like obviously, big bigger, events and like
- 33:26Speaker 1: WHERE i was in the world because you, KNOW i
- 33:29Speaker 1: don't know if you, KNOW wnba we play six months
- 33:32Speaker 1: in the w and then we go play In. Europe
- 33:34Speaker 1: so out of those like three and a half, YEARS
- 33:37Speaker 1: i was In. Turkey So i'm already isolated away from my,
- 33:40Speaker 1: family dealing with depression like heavy, stuff and so those
- 33:45Speaker 1: years over. THERE i you're, RIGHT i feel LIKE i
- 33:48Speaker 1: blacked them.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Out, YEAH i MEAN i can.
- 33:51Speaker 3: TOTALLY i can totally RELATE i went. Through just WHEN
- 33:56Speaker 3: i think back to moments of my childhood and even
- 33:59Speaker 3: like early, college people will say things to me AND
- 34:02Speaker 3: i just have no. Recollection and that's why to this,
- 34:05Speaker 3: day and i'd be curious to know if you have
- 34:08Speaker 3: one as. WELL i have such an active journaling practice.
- 34:11Speaker 2: BECAUSE i never want to experience that. Again THAT'S i,
- 34:15Speaker 2: mean that's so.
- 34:15Speaker 1: GREAT i write in my journal every day, now but
- 34:19Speaker 1: back THEN i didn't have any of those. TOOLS i
- 34:21Speaker 1: don't know about, you BUT i was. Lost so, yeah you're.
- 34:26Speaker 1: RIGHT i don't remember anything from those. Times AND i
- 34:30Speaker 1: don't know if that's like a coping mechanism that the brain,
- 34:34Speaker 1: does so like totally survival or get us. Out but,
- 34:38Speaker 1: YEAH i look back on those years and they just
- 34:39Speaker 1: Are they're just blanks to, me blanks.
- 34:44Speaker 3: Blanks so you talked a lot about finding yourself after
- 34:49Speaker 3: The achilles. Injury, again that was In june twenty. Twenty
- 34:53Speaker 3: what does finding yourself look? Like what did you start to? Discover?
- 34:59Speaker 1: WELL i think the the first thing and most important
- 35:01Speaker 1: thing was my relationship With. God you, know, SPIRITUALLY i
- 35:04Speaker 1: felt so. DRAINED i didn't feel LIKE i was producing
- 35:08Speaker 1: any joy AND i.
- 35:10Speaker 2: So for, ME.
- 35:12Speaker 1: I knew that my value has got to be outside of,
- 35:14Speaker 1: basketball and it's got to be more And i'm good
- 35:17Speaker 1: enough regardless of my. Performance and SO i think figuring
- 35:20Speaker 1: that was number, one and then number two figuring, Out, okay,
- 35:24Speaker 1: BASKETBALL i can't do that every day all, day AND
- 35:28Speaker 1: i don't want to, be you, know the person that's
- 35:33Speaker 1: not well rounded or doesn't have any hobbies outside of.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Basketball SO i feel like tapping in more with my,
- 35:38Speaker 1: relationships like in my life my friends were. Big, definitely
- 35:41Speaker 1: like spending more time with my, family getting, outdoors being more,
- 35:45Speaker 1: adventurous trying new types of. FOODS i, MEAN i was
- 35:49Speaker 1: just pretty much opening up myself to, like, yes let's do,
- 35:53Speaker 1: it let's try experiences and stuff like. That so those
- 35:57Speaker 1: were all really big things THAT i started to, like
- 36:00Speaker 1: really just be. PRESIDENT i don't THINK i was present.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Before as you, know being present is like life changing
- 36:08Speaker 1: in certain. Moments when you're, present you can enjoy something
- 36:11Speaker 1: to the. Fullest AND i had never done that before
- 36:14Speaker 1: up until that.
- 36:14Speaker 3: Time you played in the twenty Twenty olympics and your gold,
- 36:21Speaker 3: medalist would you say that you were present for?
- 36:24Speaker 2: THAT i was so present for.
- 36:28Speaker 1: That that was, why to this, day it was one
- 36:31Speaker 1: of the most amazing Experiences i've ever had because That
- 36:36Speaker 1: achilles injury and then coming back and then being able
- 36:39Speaker 1: to play and then win it for your. COUNTRY i
- 36:43Speaker 1: was so proud of myself for that, journey you, Know
- 36:49Speaker 1: AND i know that it wasn't about the, Gold LIKE
- 36:55Speaker 1: i was proud THAT i was present playing and, YEAH
- 36:59Speaker 1: i happened to, win but it Wasn't that wasn't like
- 37:02Speaker 1: the REASON i was, proud if that makes any. Sense so,
- 37:05Speaker 1: yeah that it was an amazing, experience life changing for.
- 37:08Speaker 3: Sure chat us through the other aspects of navigating. Injury
- 37:13Speaker 3: so many people listening to this episode right now have
- 37:16Speaker 3: certainly been on the bench on the injured list for
- 37:20Speaker 3: you and that, Rehab how could you focus on letting
- 37:24Speaker 3: go of the things that you couldn't.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Control that's such a good.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Question WHAT i didn't realize in My achilles rehab process
- 37:32Speaker 1: was how many people are hurt or get.
- 37:35Speaker 2: Hurt you.
- 37:36Speaker 1: KNOW i think that we think injury is like. Sports
- 37:39Speaker 1: that's not. True that's AND i didn't know that because
- 37:42Speaker 1: it was my first time having a serious. INJURY i
- 37:44Speaker 1: had so many people reach out to me on social
- 37:46Speaker 1: media and ask me about advice and, questions and then
- 37:51Speaker 1: also thank me WHEN i would talk about WHAT i
- 37:54Speaker 1: was dealing with on a day to day. BASIS i
- 37:57Speaker 1: think the biggest thing in rehab THAT i try to
- 37:59Speaker 1: tell people is that every day is a new, day
- 38:04Speaker 1: and you have a. Choice when you get, up you
- 38:06Speaker 1: can decide to even if it's like a little bit of.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Progress you can decide to be a, positive affirmation's joyous
- 38:15Speaker 1: person and take steps, forward or you can play victim and.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Feel sorry for.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Yourself and if you pick the second, ONE i promise
- 38:22Speaker 1: you it's only going to take you longer to come.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Back SO i feel like people THAT i, tell regardless
- 38:29Speaker 1: of what they're, rehabbing make a conscious decision through your
- 38:34Speaker 1: process and then keep yourself accountable every day and have
- 38:36Speaker 1: people around you keep you, accountable to approach it with
- 38:39Speaker 1: a positive mindset and be gracious to yourself because it's
- 38:45Speaker 1: every day is not going to feel like you, one
- 38:48Speaker 1: but it's about you getting up and keep going and
- 38:51Speaker 1: having that attitude that's going.
- 38:52Speaker 2: To get you.
- 38:53Speaker 3: Through it's especially beautiful to hear these takeaways from you,
- 39:00Speaker 3: know specific to that victim, mindset because it is super
- 39:06Speaker 3: clear that for so many years you lingered in the victim.
- 39:13Speaker 3: Mindset do you have any other takeaways from your experience
- 39:18Speaker 3: of shifting out of that to a place of power
- 39:23Speaker 3: that you can.
- 39:24Speaker 1: Offer, wow that's so good replacing that mindset with. You
- 39:29Speaker 1: and we talk about, joy but the. Gratitude SO i feel,
- 39:32Speaker 1: like you, know every DAY i get up AND i
- 39:34Speaker 1: write down ten Things i'm grateful, for AND i feel
- 39:38Speaker 1: like that starts my day with the with the mindset of, opportunity, gratitude,
- 39:45Speaker 1: joy and that. Translates we all know people that when
- 39:49Speaker 1: they walk in a, room they give. Energy you want
- 39:53Speaker 1: to be an energy. Giver and SO i realized that
- 39:56Speaker 1: that starts with me and HOW i conduct myself BEFORE
- 39:59Speaker 1: i walk outside and, so AND i try to be
- 40:03Speaker 1: super creative with my gratitude, stuff like every day can't
- 40:05Speaker 1: be the same ten, things.
- 40:07Speaker 2: You know WHAT i, mean give us an.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Example, oh, shoot, okay, Today i'm grateful for it stopped,
- 40:13Speaker 1: raining so it was it was pouring down last, night
- 40:16Speaker 1: so it's a beautiful day. Outside i'm grateful THAT i
- 40:20Speaker 1: get the opportunity to go work. OUT i know, that you,
- 40:23Speaker 1: know with the, pandemic we never thought we couldn't go places,
- 40:25Speaker 1: before you, Know so that's, Like i'm GRATEFUL i get
- 40:28Speaker 1: the opportunity to work. Out i'm grateful for this hot
- 40:31Speaker 1: shower in the. Morning i'm grateful FOR i get to
- 40:34Speaker 1: see a couple of my teammates later. Today i'm grateful
- 40:38Speaker 1: for THAT i get to rehab, with you, know professionals
- 40:41Speaker 1: Like pete that are high level and can help. Me
- 40:44Speaker 1: i'm grateful for, breakfast just LIKE i, mean, shoot anything
- 40:48Speaker 1: like any you could put. Anything BUT i think that
- 40:52Speaker 1: it makes it so much like it's just so much
- 40:55Speaker 1: more present about the things that you never really noticed.
- 40:58Speaker 3: Before and What i'm hearing you say is that these
- 41:03Speaker 3: items on the gratitude list don't need to be, large,
- 41:08Speaker 3: right it can be small.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Stuff oh my.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Gosh, yeah Like i'm thankful THAT i get to do
- 41:14Speaker 1: this with you, Today Like i'm thankful For Trader joe's sparkling.
- 41:19Speaker 1: WATER i don't even feel like these DAYS i write.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Down SOMETIMES i write down big, things BUT i try.
- 41:25Speaker 2: To make them just very.
- 41:27Speaker 1: Like things you barely would think, about you know WHAT i,
- 41:30Speaker 1: Mean and that to, me you just appreciate those, things
- 41:33Speaker 1: and that's what makes up a great.
- 41:35Speaker 3: Day it's truly, beautiful you, said and spoke so fondly
- 41:39Speaker 3: about your experience at The. Olympics but if you think
- 41:42Speaker 3: back to that, time and we're talking about coming out
- 41:45Speaker 3: of the, fog so to, speak do you have a
- 41:48Speaker 3: recollection or a memory of a specific time where you
- 41:54Speaker 3: noticed that you were, changing that you were shifting into
- 41:58Speaker 3: this new. Mindset, ooh that's a great.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Question.
- 42:02Speaker 1: YES i remember in My achilles, REHAB i was cleared to.
- 42:08Speaker 1: WALK i was so excited to, walk LIKE i never
- 42:15Speaker 1: thought EVER i would be just happy to just. WALK
- 42:20Speaker 1: i know it sounds like like just, remedial you, know
- 42:24Speaker 1: BUT i so REMEMBER i was walking and that they're
- 42:28Speaker 1: filming me so that they can have me look at
- 42:30Speaker 1: it and See because you want it to be, aligned you,
- 42:32Speaker 1: know like your steps and my pt guy he's pretty,
- 42:37Speaker 1: funny his name Is. Bobby he was, like you walk
- 42:40Speaker 1: like in a. Orangutang AND i was laughing because like he's.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Right AND i could have taken that as like super, like,
- 42:51Speaker 1: uh LIKE i don't walk.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Right WHATEVER i was.
- 42:54Speaker 1: HYPED i was, like this is the best o rangutang
- 42:56Speaker 1: walk you've ever, seen you, Know AND i think in
- 42:58Speaker 1: that MOMENT i, Realized i'm, like, wow that's. GROWTH i
- 43:01Speaker 1: didn't even think about taking that as a, negative you.
- 43:04Speaker 1: KNOW i took that as like a just something that
- 43:07Speaker 1: made my, day to be, honest and so that was
- 43:09Speaker 1: WHEN i think that shift was, like, oh this work
- 43:12Speaker 1: That i've been putting in is It's we're getting.
- 43:15Speaker 3: Somewhere, yeah growth will always be, challenging but when you
- 43:20Speaker 3: can find the little silver linings and see it in.
- 43:24Speaker 3: Action LIKE i had a really hard day a couple
- 43:27Speaker 3: of weeks, back and thing THAT i do as someone
- 43:31Speaker 3: who lost a lot of weight back in, college was
- 43:34Speaker 3: THAT i still When i'm going through something, hard, LIKE
- 43:36Speaker 3: i always reach for. Food AND i had this moment
- 43:39Speaker 3: WHERE i decided THAT i wasn't going to walk to
- 43:42Speaker 3: like The canoli spot THAT i love to go. To
- 43:45Speaker 3: BUT i like saw this other store that was selling
- 43:48Speaker 3: this ring THAT i had been targeted for On, instagram.
- 43:52Speaker 2: AND i went in AND i was, like fuck, It
- 43:53Speaker 2: i'm going to buy this.
- 43:54Speaker 3: Ring and now Like i'm wearing it right, now AND
- 43:57Speaker 3: i look down AND i think about. That that's, growth,
- 44:00Speaker 3: Right like growth is making the decision to do something
- 44:03Speaker 3: for you that feels. Good knowing how you'll feel later
- 44:07Speaker 3: because of that.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Action that's huge and you having the awareness to see
- 44:13Speaker 1: that in that moment is just that's growth.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Too, oh it's growth.
- 44:18Speaker 3: Too so now twenty twenty, one you come off the,
- 44:21Speaker 3: bench your back is doing up. Things, finally how thing
- 44:26Speaker 3: let's call it a career revamp. Season now that you're
- 44:29Speaker 3: present in your body and in your. Power how did
- 44:32Speaker 3: that really feel for?
- 44:33Speaker 1: You you, Know it's so funny BECAUSE i was when
- 44:36Speaker 1: they told me that they wanted me to come off the.
- 44:38Speaker 2: BENCH i was.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Pissed, HERE i, AM i just want to gold. Medal
- 44:43Speaker 1: you want me to come off the. Bench and SO
- 44:47Speaker 1: i remember that was a that was another growth moment
- 44:49Speaker 1: THAT i was, Like, OKAY i can either complain about
- 44:52Speaker 1: this OR i can just have the best bench season
- 44:56Speaker 1: that we've ever had in the.
- 44:58Speaker 3: League why would you for those that may not, understand
- 45:03Speaker 3: why would that be something that you'd complain.
- 45:05Speaker 2: About, SO i, mean for, basketball.
- 45:11Speaker 1: It, depends but ninety percent of the, time your best
- 45:14Speaker 1: players are, starting right And i'm competitive, obviously AND i
- 45:19Speaker 1: was one of the best five players on our, team
- 45:21Speaker 1: and for the sake of the, team it was better
- 45:24Speaker 1: for me to come off the bench and bring like,
- 45:27Speaker 1: energy scoring that type of stuff then for me to
- 45:31Speaker 1: start with the unit that we. Had and so it
- 45:36Speaker 1: was kind of like a, sacrifice like they were, gonna,
- 45:38Speaker 1: like we're gonna Bring kelsey off the, bench and this
- 45:40Speaker 1: is what's best for the. Team was it best for me?
- 45:42Speaker 1: INDIVIDUALLY i don't, know BUT i knew in that moment
- 45:49Speaker 1: it was an opportunity to grow AND i learned a.
- 45:52Speaker 1: TON i remember thinking thinking, Like, Okay i've never come
- 45:56Speaker 1: off the bench, before and you, know you don't have
- 46:00Speaker 1: passion for people that come off the bench that like
- 46:01Speaker 1: maybe make mistakes or or do something, wrong or you,
- 46:04Speaker 1: know whatever the case may. Be and SO i think
- 46:07Speaker 1: it gave me a great perspective THAT i had never.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Had and then coming into this, YEAR i, MEAN i
- 46:12Speaker 1: TOLD i made it clear by my. PLAY i was,
- 46:16Speaker 1: like there's no way you can bring me off the,
- 46:17Speaker 1: bench and they. Didn't but uh it Was it was
- 46:23Speaker 1: great BECAUSE i FINALLY i felt LIKE i had a
- 46:25Speaker 1: lot more compassion for a different perspective of a role
- 46:30Speaker 1: THAT i had never played.
- 46:31Speaker 3: Before, yeah another role that you've never played. Before speaking
- 46:38Speaker 3: of kind of having a better understanding of, YOURSELF i
- 46:42Speaker 3: KNOW i asked you at the time back in, college
- 46:45Speaker 3: when you looked in the.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Mirror what you.
- 46:47Speaker 3: Saw, now when you look in the, mirror who is
- 46:51Speaker 3: it that you see looking back at?
- 46:52Speaker 2: You who are?
- 46:53Speaker 3: You aside from Being Kelsey plum The aces basketball, PLAYER.
- 47:01Speaker 1: I look AND i see someone that is a very
- 47:04Speaker 1: unfinished product in the best. WAY i feel like that
- 47:09Speaker 1: growth mindset that we've kind of talked about on that
- 47:12Speaker 1: awareness is something That i'm continuing to grow in every,
- 47:16Speaker 1: day AND i feel like with my, journey definitely passing
- 47:21Speaker 1: that along right so someone else can maybe not have
- 47:24Speaker 1: to go through as much AS i went. Through WHEN
- 47:27Speaker 1: i look in the, Mirror i'm proud BECAUSE i don't
- 47:29Speaker 1: think about my value or identity in.
- 47:32Speaker 2: BASKETBALL i just.
- 47:34Speaker 1: Don't and that's that's to, me is like the greatest
- 47:37Speaker 1: accomplishment That i've ever, had AND i know for, me
- 47:41Speaker 1: like my focus these days is figuring out how figuring
- 47:46Speaker 1: out HOW i can impact, others figuring out HOW i
- 47:49Speaker 1: can use my story and use my journey to help,
- 47:54Speaker 1: people not just in, basketball but in. Life i'm really passionate,
- 47:58Speaker 1: about you, know giving back and figuring out ways THAT
- 48:02Speaker 1: i can, help especially like young girls having that kind
- 48:05Speaker 1: of mentorship THAT i maybe didn't. Have so those are
- 48:09Speaker 1: the things That I'M i got cooking up in the off, season,
- 48:13Speaker 1: obviously along with training and stuff like. That but that's
- 48:16Speaker 1: that's my.
- 48:17Speaker 3: FOCUS i love what you're saying here about making it
- 48:21Speaker 3: your personal mission to give back and also to do
- 48:26Speaker 3: whatever it is within your power to help, others specifically.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Women not feel how you.
- 48:34Speaker 3: Felt so provided the, platform what do you say to the,
- 48:40Speaker 3: woman the young woman that is dealing with so many
- 48:45Speaker 3: of those thoughts that you struggled with back in the, DAY.
- 48:49Speaker 1: I would, say first things, first take a deep. Breath
- 48:53Speaker 1: didn't even know how to breathe back, then you, know
- 48:56Speaker 1: take a deep, breath AND i would, say you got
- 48:59Speaker 1: to give yourself from grace whatever you're going, through you
- 49:03Speaker 1: got to give yourself. GRACE i don't know HOW i
- 49:06Speaker 1: got through it without it, before you, Know so those
- 49:09Speaker 1: two things right off the. Bat the other thing is
- 49:12Speaker 1: too IS i feel like surrounding yourself with people that
- 49:18Speaker 1: are uplifting and that can help you in your journey
- 49:21Speaker 1: is more important THAN i ever. Imagined you need to
- 49:25Speaker 1: hear a consistent, basis not just within yourself your self positive,
- 49:28Speaker 1: talk but around you that you're doing. Great and it's
- 49:32Speaker 1: not like the fake rah rah, Raw it's. Real you,
- 49:35Speaker 1: know we need brothers and sisters like lifting us. Up
- 49:38Speaker 1: and SO i feel like for me telling young girls
- 49:42Speaker 1: like AND i can be that resource for, them but
- 49:44Speaker 1: also having people around them that are bringing those you,
- 49:48Speaker 1: know positive consistent reminders of that they're they're, beautiful they're,
- 49:54Speaker 1: confident they're. Great whatever they want to, do they can do.
- 49:58Speaker 1: It SO i think those things off the bat are
- 50:02Speaker 1: big gaping holes that we can help feel just, initially
- 50:06Speaker 1: and then obviously there's a lot, more but those things
- 50:09Speaker 1: to me stand.
- 50:10Speaker 3: OUT i love what you said earlier as well about
- 50:15Speaker 3: knowing that how you walk into a room your energy,
- 50:20Speaker 3: matters and what you just said touching on the people
- 50:24Speaker 3: that you surround yourself with their energy also.
- 50:28Speaker 2: Matters their energy impacts.
- 50:30Speaker 3: You for someone who may feel as though they're kind
- 50:35Speaker 3: of stuck in a situation where that energy is just not,
- 50:39Speaker 3: right how does someone break that? Cycle how does someone
- 50:42Speaker 3: make a shift to seek something that may be better
- 50:46Speaker 3: serving for, Them that's a great, QUESTION i, think first and,
- 50:50Speaker 3: foremost having that awareness is.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Key also asking, yourself is this person helping me be?
- 50:57Speaker 1: Better is this person helping me? Grow and we're Not
- 51:01Speaker 1: i'm not in the business of like, heisman like at
- 51:05Speaker 1: what place for you in my?
- 51:06Speaker 2: Life you know WHAT i? Mean BUT i just think.
- 51:08Speaker 1: That those questions are super important to ask, yourself you,
- 51:12Speaker 1: know and we can all like we we all know
- 51:15Speaker 1: like as, humans like you're you're giving me energy right, now,
- 51:18Speaker 1: RIGHT i can feel. It there are times when there
- 51:21Speaker 1: are people that take, energy and so just having those
- 51:24Speaker 1: understandings and awarenesses of, like, man why DO i leave
- 51:27Speaker 1: AND i feel?
- 51:28Speaker 3: Worse how do you feel when you leave? Someone is
- 51:32Speaker 3: the most important question to ask. Yourself and also not for,
- 51:36Speaker 3: nothing sometimes you kind of have to heisman you do.
- 51:40Speaker 2: You do to a point and there's A i think
- 51:42Speaker 2: there's a way to do.
- 51:43Speaker 1: That but but but, yeah, ABSOLUTELY i think That i've
- 51:48Speaker 1: definitely over time just separated myself from people that maybe
- 51:54Speaker 1: we're talking about other people or tearing people.
- 51:56Speaker 2: Down or being negative or not helping me.
- 52:01Speaker 1: Grow and SO i think that that to me is like,
- 52:08Speaker 1: Huge like if you can weed out some of, that
- 52:10Speaker 1: you'd be. Amazing how like it kind of like oh,
- 52:13Speaker 1: okay like you, know and then obviously you bring people,
- 52:16Speaker 1: in BUT i think you got to get some of
- 52:17Speaker 1: that stuff out before you can bring some stuff.
- 52:19Speaker 3: In how does it feel for you now to be
- 52:23Speaker 3: in this place where you know you have this genuine
- 52:28Speaker 3: opportunity to help, others that your words have.
- 52:33Speaker 2: Weight i'm.
- 52:36Speaker 1: HUMBLED i wake up every, day wake up every, day
- 52:39Speaker 1: AND i Thank god for it BECAUSE i know that
- 52:43Speaker 1: it's a privilege to be able to speak to people
- 52:49Speaker 1: and to share a.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Journey you.
- 52:53Speaker 1: KNOW i think in the moments in these, JOURNEYS i
- 52:55Speaker 1: questioned a lot like, man why AM i going through?
- 52:57Speaker 2: This like like why am? Me and that victim?
- 53:01Speaker 1: Mentality, Right but NOW i THINK i look at it
- 53:04Speaker 1: more as, like, Man i'm so grateful THAT i got
- 53:08Speaker 1: to do this Because i've been molded into a better
- 53:12Speaker 1: woman for, it and LIKE i CAN i can really
- 53:16Speaker 1: help people and SO i feel LIKE i just feel,
- 53:20Speaker 1: humbled AND i make sure that when every ROOM i walk,
- 53:24Speaker 1: Into i'm bringing the. Energy i'll tell you, that LIKE,
- 53:27Speaker 1: i you will find you with. ENERGY i don't care
- 53:30Speaker 1: how TIRED i. AM i don't care Like i'm bringing
- 53:33Speaker 1: it BECAUSE i know that it's a lot bigger than.
- 53:35Speaker 2: Myself but let's be real for just a. Second, yeah
- 53:39Speaker 2: let's be.
- 53:40Speaker 3: Real there are gonna be days where you wake up
- 53:43Speaker 3: and you don't feel so shiny and so exuberant and
- 53:48Speaker 3: so ready to bring.
- 53:50Speaker 2: It so what do you do on those?
- 53:52Speaker 1: Days, Well i'll tell you one thing that's that. Happens
- 53:55Speaker 1: i'll tell you what, Though i'm not Gonna i'm not
- 53:57Speaker 1: going to take. Energy that's just like a. STANDARD i
- 54:02Speaker 1: also think, too that If i'm not focused on, myself
- 54:06Speaker 1: like selfishly like oh this is HOW i feel OR
- 54:08Speaker 1: i feel, Down i've learned that that selfish mentality of
- 54:12Speaker 1: like thinking about HOW i, feel when in, REALITY i
- 54:16Speaker 1: can be thinking about how other people, feel even if
- 54:19Speaker 1: it's one. Person it's Like, okay what CAN i do
- 54:22Speaker 1: to help so and so, today or like what CAN
- 54:25Speaker 1: i do? Too it DOESN'T i don't have, to you,
- 54:28Speaker 1: know be the sun for one hundred people. Today BUT
- 54:31Speaker 1: i feel LIKE i can bring. SOMETHING i can bring
- 54:34Speaker 1: SOMETHING i KNOW i, can And you're, right it's there
- 54:37Speaker 1: are certain days where you're just, LIKE i don't have it,
- 54:39Speaker 1: today And i'm not going to fake, it But i'm
- 54:41Speaker 1: definitely still going to figure out a way to make
- 54:43Speaker 1: an impact. Somehow how do you give back to? YOU
- 54:47Speaker 1: i think it starts with. ME i can't give Unless
- 54:51Speaker 1: i'm taking care of. Me and SO i think that
- 54:53Speaker 1: kind of what we talked about, earlier of like those practices,
- 54:57Speaker 1: JOURNALING i meditate every, DAY i, PRAY i do my gratitude.
- 55:02Speaker 1: Practice having that awareness and that presence that all starts with.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Me and SO i feel Like i've learned that IF
- 55:10Speaker 1: i don't have joy And i'm not bringing, that THEN
- 55:14Speaker 1: i can't give.
- 55:15Speaker 2: What gives you? Joy right?
- 55:17Speaker 1: Now oh my, gosh so many, things my relationship With,
- 55:21Speaker 1: god my, family my beautiful my beautiful, man.
- 55:29Speaker 2: My, friends my, teammates.
- 55:32Speaker 1: GOSH i FEEL i, MEAN i could go on and
- 55:34Speaker 1: on about the things that bring me.
- 55:36Speaker 2: Joy JUST i feel Like i'm.
- 55:39Speaker 3: Floating that's so special in this off. Season what you
- 55:44Speaker 3: got going?
- 55:44Speaker 1: On oh, man where do you? START i actually you
- 55:48Speaker 1: know it's. CRAZY i actually had shoulder. Surgery, nothing nothing's
- 55:53Speaker 1: as intense as The, achilles but a little clean. Up
- 55:56Speaker 1: So i've been rehabbing. That so any of you rehab,
- 56:00Speaker 1: People i'm still in it with. You i'm doing. That
- 56:04Speaker 1: we got some great things going on with Just hugh
- 56:07Speaker 1: that would be coming, out you, know periodically Under. Armor
- 56:10Speaker 1: i'm really excited we're going to be launching some new,
- 56:12Speaker 1: stuff so be tuned for. That, also what we talked
- 56:15Speaker 1: about earlier with making an impact with especially with young,
- 56:18Speaker 1: Girls we're going to be hopefully launching some camps and
- 56:22Speaker 1: different you know, activations hopefully locally In vegas as well
- 56:27Speaker 1: as you, know around.
- 56:28Speaker 2: The, states so look out for.
- 56:30Speaker 1: That and then, also you, know working on trying to
- 56:32Speaker 1: be the best player in the.
- 56:33Speaker 2: World so a couple of, things you.
- 56:37Speaker 1: Know.
- 56:39Speaker 3: Just a couple of things BEFORE i let you, go
- 56:42Speaker 3: just to dial it back for a, second BECAUSE i
- 56:44Speaker 3: know you spoke about how difficult it was to be
- 56:48Speaker 3: back in college and for so many people to look at,
- 56:51Speaker 3: you like for your worth as a basketball. Player now
- 56:57Speaker 3: you go, ONLINE i go to Your. Instagram you've got
- 57:00Speaker 3: over six hundred thousand. Followers how do you navigate that
- 57:05Speaker 3: space on a regular basis in a way that serves.
- 57:08Speaker 2: You that's a great. Question i've had to set.
- 57:12Speaker 1: BOUNDARIES i know that social media can be a great
- 57:16Speaker 1: thing and it also can be something that really helps
- 57:19Speaker 1: us kind of bring us, down you, know in a
- 57:23Speaker 1: way of we don't mean to compare our lives to,
- 57:26Speaker 1: people but we.
- 57:27Speaker 2: Do you, know it's like.
- 57:28Speaker 1: INEVITABLE i think THAT i don't touch my phone, obviously
- 57:32Speaker 1: like IF i got to like call or text, someone
- 57:34Speaker 1: it's a little bit. Different But i'm saying social, MEDIA
- 57:37Speaker 1: i try not to touch my phone before noon in the, morning.
- 57:43Speaker 2: And THEN i have my.
- 57:44Speaker 1: Notifications off AND i try not to touch it an
- 57:48Speaker 1: hour before.
- 57:49Speaker 2: Bed so definitely setting.
- 57:51Speaker 1: Those boundaries for, ME i feel like has been super
- 57:55Speaker 1: helpful because it's like a healthy. Dose you got to
- 57:57Speaker 1: see what's going. On they obviously want to connect and
- 57:59Speaker 1: support people and also share what you have going, On
- 58:02Speaker 1: but there's a limit to. THAT i would say that
- 58:06Speaker 1: is number, one and then over. Two number two that
- 58:09Speaker 1: is tough for a lot of people is. OVERSHARING i
- 58:14Speaker 1: feel like for, me the value of having a little
- 58:17Speaker 1: bit of privacy in my life is. Priceless and the
- 58:21Speaker 1: older you get, Like i'm sure you, know like peace
- 58:25Speaker 1: is something that is just it's worth more than. Anything
- 58:31Speaker 1: SO i feel like having that peace of my personal
- 58:34Speaker 1: life has been really really healthy for. Me SO i
- 58:40Speaker 1: encourage kids, like, yeah, share but just is it at
- 58:43Speaker 1: the sake of?
- 58:44Speaker 2: Oversharing you? Know maybe just ask yourself some of those.
- 58:47Speaker 1: Questions and maybe that's not just, kids it's, everyone but
- 58:52Speaker 1: specifically like, college high, school that, age you don't got
- 58:55Speaker 1: to overshare to be.
- 58:56Speaker 3: Valued, Yeah and knowing that you feel that, WAY i
- 59:00Speaker 3: feel even more grateful and thankful that you feel that
- 59:06Speaker 3: sharing your story and what you've been through in terms
- 59:10Speaker 3: of your mental health is the.
- 59:14Speaker 2: Right share for.
- 59:14Speaker 3: YOU i think that is truly just the most beautiful
- 59:18Speaker 3: thing because you're at a place now in your journey
- 59:21Speaker 3: where talking about these things truly resonates and feels right
- 59:26Speaker 3: like in your chest to deepen your.
- 59:28Speaker 2: Soul it, does and it wasn't always that, way you.
- 59:33Speaker 1: Know AND i feel like the more Comfortable i've become
- 59:35Speaker 1: in my own, skin the MORE i, feel like you,
- 59:38Speaker 1: SAID i feel empowered to be able to, share and
- 59:42Speaker 1: it grateful for the opportunity to come on a platform
- 59:45Speaker 1: like this and. Share and SO i would, say you,
- 59:49Speaker 1: know for people that are going through, it when you
- 59:54Speaker 1: feel like you're ready to share your story is very
- 59:57Speaker 1: powerful and you really don't know who's listening and who
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: you can help that can connect to. You so just
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: know that you're not, alone and just know that your
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: story matters and it needs to be.
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: Heard you, KNOW i wind down AND i feel like
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: you've offered a lot of really great advice so, far
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: but in this, context maybe it'll shift just a little.
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: Bit right, now you have the opportunity to offer yourself
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: a piece of, advice let's, say sitting on the bridge
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: or the parking structure with your legs dangling over the,
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: edge knowing what you? Know, now what do you tell
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: yourself at that hurdle? MOMENT i just got the chills
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: when you said that there's so much. More, please, like baby,
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: girl please don't give. Up there's so much, more and
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: you're worth. It don't listen to that voice in your
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: head that tells you you're.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: Not you're worth.
