- 1:09Speaker 1: drive to the airport. On Sunday, the UC basketball team
- 1:14Speaker 1: had a two o'clock home game which I called on
- 1:16Speaker 1: the radio. I had a flight to Dallas book for
- 1:19Speaker 1: five point thirty, so I figured if the game ended
- 1:22Speaker 1: at four, I should be able to make it to
- 1:25Speaker 1: the airport in time. Well, the traffic leaving campus was
- 1:29Speaker 1: brutal and I didn't exit UC until four point thirty,
- 1:34Speaker 1: giving me about forty five minutes to get to the airport,
- 1:37Speaker 1: park my car, get through security, and make it to
- 1:40Speaker 1: the gate before they closed the door around.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Five point fifteen.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Well, I made it with one of the greatest driving
- 1:47Speaker 1: performances in history. I'm thinking a maximum of three drivers
- 1:53Speaker 1: in the one hundred and eight race history of the
- 1:55Speaker 1: Indy five hundred have navigated traffic better than I did.
- 2:00Speaker 1: We're talking aj Foyd, al Unser, Haleyo, castron Nevis and me.
- 2:05Speaker 1: But don't take my word for it. Kelsey Conway from
- 2:08Speaker 1: the Cincinnati Inquirer hitched a ride with me and tweeted
- 2:12Speaker 1: the following, we made it thanks to Dan's exceptional driving skills.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Is that enough bragging for one podcast? I think? So
- 2:23Speaker 1: let's get to the radio replays from Monday night's matchup
- 2:26Speaker 1: in Dallas. Tonight, for the fifth time this year, the
- 2:31Speaker 1: NFL's prime time spotlight shines on the Cincinnati Bengals. The
- 2:36Speaker 1: question is what will Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase do next.
- 2:41Speaker 1: They are having incredible seasons and they will look to
- 2:44Speaker 1: add another chapter tonight as the Bengals take on the
- 2:48Speaker 1: Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. Fourth down and two
- 2:54Speaker 1: at the Cincinnati twelve yard line, rush in the gun,
- 2:58Speaker 1: two receivers to each side of the formation. He catches
- 3:01Speaker 1: the shotgun snap, throwing for the end zone. It is
- 3:04Speaker 1: caught by a wide open CD Lamb. He got about
- 3:09Speaker 1: four yards of separation and the decision to go for
- 3:13Speaker 1: it on fourth and two.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Is worth seven second and goal from the five.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Burrow waiting for the shotgun snap at the ten, Joe
- 3:20Speaker 1: catches short drop fires for Chase and it is caught
- 3:24Speaker 1: for the touchdown at the forward right pylon. Jamar Chase
- 3:31Speaker 1: continuing to put up incredible numbers. That is his NFL
- 3:35Speaker 1: leading fourteenth touchdown.
- 3:37Speaker 4: And had good coverage. I mean that was tight coverage.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Joe Burrow threw a rocket rush back to throw looking
- 3:44Speaker 3: left throws.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And it is in her seb night deflected by Cam
- 3:48Speaker 1: Taylor Brick picked off by Geno Stone.
- 3:52Speaker 3: The pass was intended for cebe lamb.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Legal formation and the offensive tackle is on the under
- 3:59Speaker 4: line uncovered he he's the.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Flying first down.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Nice job by Gino Stone there to quickly react to
- 4:05Speaker 1: the ricochet off the body of Cam Taylor Brent It's
- 4:09Speaker 1: the second interception of the year for Gino Stone. Three
- 4:13Speaker 1: point thirty five left in the second quarter. Here's a
- 4:15Speaker 1: swing pass caught in the flat by Chase Briton running
- 4:18Speaker 1: down the sideline toward the pylon. Looked like he stepped out.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Who inside the tent ont scoring.
- 4:25Speaker 3: He stepped out at the five According to one of the.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Officials, Boy, I'll tell you the acceleration was there. And
- 4:32Speaker 4: did that left foot stay in bounds? Did the right foot? Boy,
- 4:35Speaker 4: I'll tell you, I'm not sure.
- 4:37Speaker 1: The decision to throw the red challenge flag is a
- 4:40Speaker 1: great one by the Bengals coaching step. It is reversed
- 4:43Speaker 1: and that is a touchdown. Chase Brown did not step
- 4:46Speaker 1: out of bounds. It becomes a nineteen yard touchdown pass
- 4:50Speaker 1: from Burrow to Chase Brown, and the Bengals had taken
- 4:53Speaker 1: the lead for the first time. Tonight, Rush Catches drops
- 4:57Speaker 1: back to throw, looking bouncing in the pocket, firing to
- 5:00Speaker 1: the end zone put he's a penalty flag down. Brandon
- 5:03Speaker 1: Cooks with the catch as he beat Josh Newton for
- 5:06Speaker 1: the score. Here comes the forty seven yarder for the lead.
- 5:09Speaker 1: It is good. Dallas twenty Cincinnati seventeen five seconds into.
- 5:14Speaker 3: The fourth quarter to snap the right footed gick.
- 5:17Speaker 1: It is good, and the Bengals have pulled even at twenty.
- 5:21Speaker 1: With ten minutes and twenty four seconds to go. Rico
- 5:25Speaker 1: punting for the third time. He's averaged fifty three and
- 5:28Speaker 1: a half yards per punt. The snap is good. Here
- 5:31Speaker 1: comes the punt and it's blocked. Can you believe it?
- 5:35Speaker 1: It's rolling forward. The Cowboys may have touched it. If
- 5:38Speaker 1: that's the case, the Bengals would get the ball.
- 5:40Speaker 3: He got it.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Colossal mistake by the Dallas Cowboys. They just needed to
- 5:45Speaker 1: get out of the way after blocking that punt. One
- 5:49Speaker 1: of their players touched it and the Bengals recovered. A
- 5:53Speaker 1: colossal blunder by Dallas, and the Bengals are going to
- 5:57Speaker 1: get the ball near midfield.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Joe has the foot ball. He'll look to throw. Fires
- 6:01Speaker 3: a pass caught by Jamar Chase down the sideline. Twenty
- 6:05Speaker 3: fifteen tas.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Touchdown Bengals one on one to go, a forty yard
- 6:14Speaker 1: strike to Jamar Chase.
- 6:17Speaker 4: Oh man, I'll tell you he made Bland miss.
- 6:20Speaker 3: That was the key.
- 6:21Speaker 4: I mean, a great player like Lamb on the sideline,
- 6:24Speaker 4: Jamar Chase just fun inside of him and then it
- 6:27Speaker 4: was off to the races.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Fourth down in seven, officially Dallas at its own forty eight.
- 6:32Speaker 1: The Bengals have two safeties playing deep stone and battle
- 6:36Speaker 1: shotgun snap rush dropping way back fires, a pass too
- 6:40Speaker 1: high and complete too high for Ferguson, and that is
- 6:46Speaker 1: coffin nails.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Bam, bam bam.
- 6:50Speaker 4: How about the Bengals coming down to Dallas one in
- 6:52Speaker 4: seven in Dallas. Before this football game, they had lost
- 6:56Speaker 4: five straight down here and that all ends today.
- 7:01Speaker 1: And it is glorious to see the Bengals in a
- 7:03Speaker 1: victory formation. Burrow takes the snap, he takes a knee,
- 7:08Speaker 1: and that will do it. The final score Cincinnati twenty seven,
- 7:15Speaker 1: Dallas twenty The Bengals have had their share of tough
- 7:18Speaker 1: finishes this year, but this time the big break went
- 7:21Speaker 1: their way. With two minutes to go, former Bengal Nick
- 7:24Speaker 1: Vigil blocked Ryan Rico's punt, a play that probably should
- 7:28Speaker 1: have won the game for Dallas, but rather than letting
- 7:31Speaker 1: the ball roll to a stop, amani O Ruwarie tried
- 7:35Speaker 1: to pick it up and muffed it, allowing Muma johng
- 7:39Speaker 1: Mata to recover for Cincinnati. Three snaps later, Joe Burrow
- 7:43Speaker 1: threw a short pass to Jamar Chase and he did
- 7:45Speaker 1: the rest, zipping past pro bowler Doran Bland and going
- 7:49Speaker 1: forty yards for the game winning touchdown. Two years ago
- 7:53Speaker 1: in New Orleans, Burrow and Chase ran the same play
- 7:56Speaker 1: to the left side instead of the right for a
- 7:59Speaker 1: game winning touch down to beat the Saints.
- 8:01Speaker 5: That's a throw that we rep all the time, and
- 8:04Speaker 5: we talk about throwing it inside shoulder so you can
- 8:06Speaker 5: turn and make a play if the if the corners off.
- 8:09Speaker 6: You know he was able to do what he does.
- 8:11Speaker 6: We've wrapped that million times, brag a love play we
- 8:13Speaker 6: always run. But at the end of that, it was
- 8:16Speaker 6: like me and Joe's on the same page. That goes
- 8:18Speaker 6: back to the New Orleans game, same play.
- 8:22Speaker 7: You know, we both on the same page.
- 8:23Speaker 8: Throwing it on my inside showed us like a turn
- 8:25Speaker 8: up field and make a run at the catch in
- 8:28Speaker 8: Just good job by him giving me an opportunity to.
- 8:30Speaker 7: Make a play.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Burrow threw for three hundred and sixty nine yards and
- 8:33Speaker 1: three touchdowns, his fifth straight game with three or more tds,
- 8:37Speaker 1: giving him an NFL leading thirty three touchdown passes for
- 8:41Speaker 1: the season. Chase had fourteen catches for one hundred and
- 8:44Speaker 1: seventy seven yards and two of burrows three tds. Jamar's
- 8:48Speaker 1: two touchdowns away from tying Carl Pickens team record of
- 8:52Speaker 1: seventeen touchdown catches in a season. Those two went out
- 8:57Speaker 1: for the coin toss before the game, along with the
- 8:59Speaker 1: running man T Higgins. It's obviously been speculated that this
- 9:03Speaker 1: could be their last year together in Cincinnati, but Chase
- 9:07Speaker 1: is under contract through next season, and Burrow expressed optimism
- 9:11Speaker 1: that Higgins could be back as well.
- 9:14Speaker 5: You know, those discussions are ongoing, and I'm confident that
- 9:20Speaker 5: I think we're gonna be able to do what it
- 9:21Speaker 5: takes to bring Tea back. You know, I know that
- 9:26Speaker 5: I'm going to do what it takes to get him back,
- 9:28Speaker 5: and so is he. We've had those talks, so you know,
- 9:30Speaker 5: those are those are going to be offseason discussions, but
- 9:33Speaker 5: I think we're excited about that opportunity.
- 9:35Speaker 8: I try to think too much of it. You know,
- 9:36Speaker 8: that's really out of my control. I wish I could
- 9:39Speaker 8: sign Tea myself and have him with me, you know.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Fully turning, Joe threw the ball forty times on Monday
- 9:44Speaker 1: night and only got sacked twice. Three time pro bowler
- 9:48Speaker 1: Michah Parsons hit him a couple of times but did
- 9:51Speaker 1: not get a sack. Mike has spent most of the
- 9:54Speaker 1: game matched up against a Marius Mims, and I spoke
- 9:57Speaker 1: to the rookie right tackle after the game, A Marius
- 10:01Speaker 1: on the final stat sheet, no tackles, no sacks for
- 10:04Speaker 1: Micah Parsons.
- 10:05Speaker 9: Your reaction, Great team win, great team effort, Like I said, man,
- 10:11Speaker 9: just a great job by the whole line tight ends.
- 10:13Speaker 9: Everybody will helped hit them and helped me with them.
- 10:15Speaker 9: So I mean, like I said, man, that's a great
- 10:17Speaker 9: team win. I don't, really, like I said, care about
- 10:19Speaker 9: like individual stats, but I'm just glad we got the
- 10:22Speaker 9: team win, especially especially on the road.
- 10:24Speaker 10: Man.
- 10:24Speaker 9: It's just hard to play, especially on the road in NFL. Man,
- 10:27Speaker 9: I'm just glad we got to win.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Describe the emotional boost you get when the special teams
- 10:31Speaker 1: makes that play and you've got the ball right back
- 10:34Speaker 1: near midfield with a chance to win the game.
- 10:36Speaker 9: The only thing I went in my head is thank
- 10:37Speaker 9: god Joe Burns our quarterback. I mean, I mean, you
- 10:40Speaker 9: got Like I said, when we got the old line
- 10:42Speaker 9: up we got, we got. We got the best quarterback
- 10:44Speaker 9: in the league in my opinion. Back then, we got
- 10:47Speaker 9: the best wide receiver win in my opinion in the league. Also,
- 10:49Speaker 9: just I mean, I just got trusted my guys.
- 10:51Speaker 10: Man.
- 10:52Speaker 9: Like I said, we went down and made a play
- 10:53Speaker 9: when we needed to.
- 10:54Speaker 10: We won the game.
- 10:54Speaker 1: So how about Jamar fourteen catches, bucks seventy seven, two touchdowns,
- 10:59Speaker 1: game winner four yard or down the sideline to win
- 11:01Speaker 1: the game. I mean, I'm running out of superlatives to
- 11:04Speaker 1: describe him.
- 11:04Speaker 9: I'm running out of them too. Man, Like I said,
- 11:06Speaker 9: best athlete ever to play with. I love getting the
- 11:08Speaker 9: whole of win. I'm like, man, just thank god he's
- 11:09Speaker 9: on my team, not nobody else team. So, like I said,
- 11:12Speaker 9: when I look at him in the whole, I'm like, man,
- 11:14Speaker 9: thank god he's on my team. Man, special player, special guy,
- 11:17Speaker 9: specially like I said, even better teammate. And I'm just
- 11:19Speaker 9: I'm just proud of him. Man, so, like I said,
- 11:21Speaker 9: we just keep building from this win, just go get
- 11:22Speaker 9: the next one.
- 11:24Speaker 2: What is the emotion tonight? Is it relief?
- 11:27Speaker 1: How are you guys feeling after coming in here and
- 11:29Speaker 1: the ending a three game losing streak and getting a
- 11:31Speaker 1: big win.
- 11:31Speaker 10: I'm to be honest with you, man, I feel like
- 11:33Speaker 10: everybody excited.
- 11:33Speaker 7: Man.
- 11:34Speaker 9: Like I said, it hasn't been like I said, it
- 11:35Speaker 9: hasn't been the past couple of games like we wanted,
- 11:37Speaker 9: or the season like we want it. But like I said,
- 11:38Speaker 9: just going the road and un Dallas in Dallas, and
- 11:41Speaker 9: you know, go get a win.
- 11:42Speaker 7: Man.
- 11:43Speaker 10: Like I said, we're all excited.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Man.
- 11:44Speaker 9: We needed his win the state of Cincinnati. It was
- 11:46Speaker 9: state of Ohio. Cincinnati needed his win.
- 11:48Speaker 7: Man.
- 11:49Speaker 9: And like I said, we had one goal coming in
- 11:51Speaker 9: this game, and that was neutralized eleven as much as possible,
- 11:53Speaker 9: Like I said, we know he's gonna make his fast
- 11:55Speaker 9: share of plays. But as long as we can limit
- 11:56Speaker 9: him as much as possible, man, I feel like you know,
- 11:59Speaker 9: we'll pretty good.
- 12:01Speaker 2: What stood out about blocking him.
- 12:03Speaker 10: Man, he's relentless.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Man.
- 12:04Speaker 9: He's the most active and physical rusher I probably don't
- 12:08Speaker 9: played against this year.
- 12:09Speaker 10: I'd give him like I said, hass all to him.
- 12:10Speaker 9: Man, he's a great player, and you know, just got
- 12:12Speaker 9: to just go get back in the film room and
- 12:14Speaker 9: you know see what I did wrong to just learn
- 12:16Speaker 9: from it.
- 12:17Speaker 10: Man.
- 12:17Speaker 9: But like I said, Man, one of the best guys
- 12:18Speaker 9: I ever played against, man in my whole entire life. Man,
- 12:20Speaker 9: that dude was just a dog. He's relentless.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Final thing for Marius Mems.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Are you looking forward to checking out how you looked
- 12:25Speaker 1: down the Simpsons telecast? Oh?
- 12:27Speaker 10: That would be nice. Ye, I'm be waiting on that.
- 12:30Speaker 10: I'm gonna be watching it.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Congrats on a great way. I appreciate you.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Defensively, The Bengals struggle to stop the run, allowing one
- 12:38Speaker 1: hundred and fifty six yards on the ground, but they
- 12:41Speaker 1: held Cooper Rush under two hundred passing yards and only
- 12:45Speaker 1: surrendered twenty points, the lowest total they've allowed since beating
- 12:49Speaker 1: the Browns in October. Here's my conversation with Cam Taylor Brett.
- 12:55Speaker 7: Damn.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Before we started this interview, you said we needed that.
- 12:58Speaker 1: It's got to be a great feeling this.
- 13:00Speaker 11: This is a game that you dreaming about Monday night. U.
- 13:03Speaker 11: The whole world is watching U, and we, like I said,
- 13:05Speaker 11: we needed to win. It's been a long time coming.
- 13:08Speaker 11: Then I feel like we showed it right that we
- 13:10Speaker 11: can actually finish and now players a team.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Let's talk about one of the big plays in the game.
- 13:14Speaker 1: You tipped it, Gino Stone picked it off at the
- 13:16Speaker 1: four yard line, keep the Cowboys out of the end
- 13:18Speaker 1: zone when they had it in the red zone.
- 13:20Speaker 11: They've run a lot of the same concepts throughout the game,
- 13:22Speaker 11: but really, hit my face.
- 13:24Speaker 10: Man, he threw a.
- 13:25Speaker 11: Bullet, So you know I caught it, you know, but
- 13:28Speaker 11: I he threw a bullet, and so by the time
- 13:30Speaker 11: I was able to look, uh yeah, I was on
- 13:32Speaker 11: the face mats. I was so glad, you know, car
- 13:34Speaker 11: because I was gonna try to die for it. But
- 13:35Speaker 11: now see in Geno's oh you got it, get up,
- 13:38Speaker 11: get up, get up, So you know, uh yeah, we
- 13:39Speaker 11: we just went team defense. Man, everybody traveling to the ball.
- 13:43Speaker 11: You know, he was in the right place at the
- 13:44Speaker 11: right time.
- 13:44Speaker 2: We need the assist stat in football.
- 13:47Speaker 10: Oh yeah, mother, definitely, man, I need to assist.
- 13:50Speaker 1: So the Cowboys went down the field and scored to
- 13:52Speaker 1: begin the first half.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Did it to begin the second half.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Other than that, I thought the defense played great they
- 13:58Speaker 1: had those two drives, so give him credit, but you
- 14:00Speaker 1: guys played really well other than those two drives.
- 14:03Speaker 10: Yeah, I'm with you on that as well.
- 14:04Speaker 7: Man.
- 14:04Speaker 11: This is the NFL at the end of the day.
- 14:06Speaker 11: How they got good players. We got good players. We
- 14:08Speaker 11: can get our scheme a lot better within ourselves on
- 14:11Speaker 11: the defense a far as talking on the field and
- 14:14Speaker 11: then everything we kill everything dead just like that.
- 14:16Speaker 7: Though.
- 14:16Speaker 11: You know, I feel like when we talked, nobody's confused
- 14:19Speaker 11: and everybody's on the same page, and we play.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Fast trunk to Cam Taylor, Brad, let's talk about the
- 14:23Speaker 1: special teams play. With less than two minutes to go,
- 14:25Speaker 1: you guys are getting ready to go out there in
- 14:27Speaker 1: defense and try to force overtime. The next thing you know,
- 14:30Speaker 1: they make a mistake and you guys have the ball
- 14:32Speaker 1: right back.
- 14:32Speaker 2: What was your reaction on the sideline?
- 14:34Speaker 11: Honestly, I was just so shocked, man, I've never been
- 14:37Speaker 11: in a game like that where that happened in the
- 14:39Speaker 11: turn of the events. Honestly, just was ready to go
- 14:41Speaker 11: back out there with the guys and you know, get
- 14:43Speaker 11: a stop. You know that was on my mind and
- 14:45Speaker 11: that that happened. Yeah, Chinese events ball game.
- 14:49Speaker 1: As Jamar Chase is sprinting down the sideline, what are
- 14:53Speaker 1: you thinking.
- 14:53Speaker 10: Go get a stop, get out the field. We got
- 14:56Speaker 10: to win the game. They put it on this offense date.
- 14:58Speaker 11: They show love and got that last touchdown. Know, he
- 15:00Speaker 11: did his thing, and uh, we got to go out
- 15:01Speaker 11: there and you know protect well basically back up, Joe.
- 15:07Speaker 1: That's fifteen touchdown catches for Jamar. I mean, is there
- 15:10Speaker 1: anything this guy does at this point that amazes you?
- 15:14Speaker 10: Nah, not really.
- 15:15Speaker 11: I've seen him get hit by the safety coming out
- 15:18Speaker 11: the post and break three four tackles and steer run
- 15:20Speaker 11: for sixty yards. So there's a lot of things that
- 15:23Speaker 11: he's done that showed me how great of a player is.
- 15:26Speaker 1: All Right, you could make the case that he should
- 15:29Speaker 1: have like slid down at the one yard line. That
- 15:33Speaker 1: might have been the smart thing to do. On the
- 15:34Speaker 1: other hand, on defense, so you guys like go ahead
- 15:37Speaker 1: and score, will protect it.
- 15:39Speaker 11: So initially, most definitely, like I think far as like
- 15:41Speaker 11: football terms and everything, you would get down you know
- 15:44Speaker 11: before that, But we were ready to go, Like I
- 15:47Speaker 11: think we were excited honestly with him scoring, and like
- 15:50Speaker 11: we just knew our job was to go back out there.
- 15:51Speaker 11: And get him out a.
- 15:52Speaker 10: Few in the game.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Nice wing, congratulations, thank you so much.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Let's hear what Zach Taylor had to say is he
- 15:59Speaker 1: spent a few minutes with Dave Lapham after the game.
- 16:03Speaker 10: Every time you.
- 16:03Speaker 4: Play the Cowboys, it is just it's a battle, royal man.
- 16:06Speaker 4: It comes down to like a possession or a mistake
- 16:09Speaker 4: or a player or whatever.
- 16:11Speaker 12: That's just how these games are going right now, you know.
- 16:12Speaker 12: And just proud of our guys for stepping up in
- 16:14Speaker 12: those moments. And defense got some huge stops there at
- 16:17Speaker 12: the end of the game. Special teams came up with
- 16:19Speaker 12: the fumble on the blocked pawn and then often is
- 16:23Speaker 12: able to put it away. So just prout of the way.
- 16:24Speaker 12: The guys have fought, stuck together, done it the right way,
- 16:26Speaker 12: and are rewarded with a victory.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean you go from the peak of victory
- 16:32Speaker 4: to the agony defeat or the other way around. I
- 16:34Speaker 4: mean the punch block and then man mistakes made. He
- 16:37Speaker 4: tries to pick it up and hero ball and score whatever,
- 16:39Speaker 4: and he fumbles it and Johnny on the spot to
- 16:42Speaker 4: make that play. What about your quarterback though, I mean
- 16:46Speaker 4: thirty three for forty four three hundred and sixty nine yards,
- 16:49Speaker 4: three touchdowns. He's got thirty three touchdowns now and what
- 16:53Speaker 4: is it, five interceptions.
- 16:54Speaker 10: I mean it's ridiculous.
- 16:55Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean, he's he's unmatched his physical toughness, total toughness,
- 17:00Speaker 12: because you know, like everybody going against Mike Zimmer for
- 17:03Speaker 12: an entire game is exhausting. All the looks he presents,
- 17:06Speaker 12: all the challenges he puts on the quarterback, so he's
- 17:09Speaker 12: got to fight through all that too, pre snap and
- 17:11Speaker 12: then deal with you know, some of those monsters they
- 17:13Speaker 12: got post snapped. And just really proud of the way
- 17:16Speaker 12: that he led us today and happy that we all
- 17:18Speaker 12: got that victory.
- 17:19Speaker 4: The best one to two punch offensively in football. His
- 17:22Speaker 4: running mate, Jamar Chase fourteen catchers, one hundred and seventy
- 17:26Speaker 4: seven yards, two touchdowns. He ran the ball for fourteen
- 17:29Speaker 4: more so, fifteen touches, one hundred and ninety one yards
- 17:33Speaker 4: and a couple of touchdowns. There's none nothing better than
- 17:37Speaker 4: Barrow and Chase.
- 17:38Speaker 12: No, there isn't. And then we got Tea over there
- 17:42Speaker 12: on the other side. Yeah, that's tough. It takes a
- 17:44Speaker 12: lot of the pressure off of it. So really proud
- 17:46Speaker 12: of Jamar that the job he did tonight, the attention
- 17:49Speaker 12: to details. We're able to move him all over the
- 17:51Speaker 12: place and get him the ball every which way imaginable,
- 17:53Speaker 12: and it's still not enough. But he always shows up
- 17:55Speaker 12: for us, and he certainly did in a big way tonight.
- 17:58Speaker 4: So Joe had one, two, three, four, or five six,
- 18:01Speaker 4: seven different players with a catch of twelve yards or longer.
- 18:05Speaker 4: Went from twelve yards to forty yards and everything in between.
- 18:08Speaker 4: I mean he found eight different receivers, seven of them
- 18:13Speaker 4: had a catch of twelve yards and more. You talk
- 18:15Speaker 4: about distributing the football, reading the football field, going where
- 18:19Speaker 4: he's supposed to go with the football in a timely fashion.
- 18:21Speaker 10: I mean, it's crazy.
- 18:22Speaker 12: It just so is the confidence he has gotten everybody
- 18:24Speaker 12: we put on the field, and he's not afraid to
- 18:26Speaker 12: give it to everybody. He's going to read the defense
- 18:28Speaker 12: out and what you give him, he's going to take it.
- 18:29Speaker 12: He's not going to force the ball to somebody. He's
- 18:32Speaker 12: going to make you pay for every coverage and every
- 18:34Speaker 12: blitzer like you give. And sometimes they'll hang in there
- 18:36Speaker 12: the last second and take that extra hit. He took
- 18:39Speaker 12: one from Micah, you know, and a tough five man
- 18:41Speaker 12: protection look and hung in there and got a huge
- 18:44Speaker 12: to play to Mike HSEEKI you know, they got us
- 18:45Speaker 12: in the red zone. So proud of his toughness, both
- 18:48Speaker 12: physically and mentally.
- 18:49Speaker 4: So I was thinking, all right, I'd like to see
- 18:52Speaker 4: at least twenty carries in the football gameteen seventeen nineteen
- 18:56Speaker 4: nineteen carries. Chase Brown had fourteen of them fifty eight yards,
- 19:00Speaker 4: and then he also had six catches sixty five yards
- 19:03Speaker 4: and a touchdown. Fifteen touches of the football for one
- 19:07Speaker 4: hundred and nineteen yards and a touchdown. I mean, he's
- 19:10Speaker 4: he's doing a lot of things for you. Plus he'd
- 19:13Speaker 4: stuck his nose in his A gap, blitz his you
- 19:15Speaker 4: know double A gaps that the zim head cook.
- 19:17Speaker 10: And I mean he was big time today. He was.
- 19:19Speaker 10: He was.
- 19:19Speaker 12: And some of those some of those receptions were just
- 19:21Speaker 12: getting the ball. There's a extended handoffs, you know, and
- 19:24Speaker 12: they don't go in the rushing stats, but it's just
- 19:26Speaker 12: a different way to get in the ball on the perimeter.
- 19:28Speaker 12: And usually when we do that, he makes it pay.
- 19:30Speaker 12: And so many of those play actions, Joe so quick
- 19:32Speaker 12: to come off of it and just put the ball
- 19:33Speaker 12: in his hands because he can see they're sinking underneath
- 19:35Speaker 12: it and there's a big play to be had. And
- 19:37Speaker 12: I can think of many of them where he made
- 19:38Speaker 12: that decision and he's a great weapon to have.
- 19:41Speaker 4: What'd you think about your pass rush today? Overall, Trey
- 19:43Speaker 4: gets the sack he gets, He's got twelve and a
- 19:45Speaker 4: half now in the season. But overall, what'd you think
- 19:48Speaker 4: They put.
- 19:48Speaker 12: Him under dress, you know, and he could feel that heat,
- 19:51Speaker 12: you know, from multiple different guys. You know, bj got
- 19:53Speaker 12: one and Joseph and Trey, and so I was proud
- 19:56Speaker 12: of those guys. I thought the coverage is pretty tight
- 19:57Speaker 12: on the back end as well. You know, we took
- 19:59Speaker 12: the air cover and guys made him have to go
- 20:01Speaker 12: play quarterback.
- 20:02Speaker 4: You had a stretch in the game where the game
- 20:04Speaker 4: was on the line where he threw five straight and completions.
- 20:07Speaker 4: I mean he really couldn't find anybody, or didn't have
- 20:11Speaker 4: time to find anybody, or a combination of both.
- 20:13Speaker 12: It was great to see the offense go down and
- 20:15Speaker 12: put pressure on by scoring a touchdown the defense close
- 20:17Speaker 12: it out.
- 20:17Speaker 1: You know.
- 20:17Speaker 3: It's a great way to do it.
- 20:18Speaker 12: And our kicker kids can getting touch back, you know,
- 20:21Speaker 12: and not giving the ball to Turpen and letting him
- 20:22Speaker 12: return it. You know, that was a big part of
- 20:24Speaker 12: the game as well that we stressed and so all
- 20:26Speaker 12: three phases able to close it out. It is a
- 20:27Speaker 12: good way to do it. Yeah, that was a big
- 20:28Speaker 12: thing we talked about in the pregame show. And you're
- 20:31Speaker 12: comment on field position was right dead on. Now you know,
- 20:35Speaker 12: you had an interception to set your back field position. Wise,
- 20:38Speaker 12: they stopped you on fourth down, you know, so they
- 20:40Speaker 12: got an edge on you know, average drive start just
- 20:42Speaker 12: on that little sequence.
- 20:43Speaker 10: But overall, what did you think?
- 20:45Speaker 12: I thought our guys played the game the right way.
- 20:47Speaker 12: You know, it was a tight game, didn't feel like
- 20:48Speaker 12: a lot of possessions, so everyone of them mattered. But ultimately,
- 20:51Speaker 12: our guys made the plays that we needed to make
- 20:53Speaker 12: at the end of the game. That's what we've been
- 20:55Speaker 12: dying for all season. We finally got it and now
- 20:57Speaker 12: we got to carry on this moment of next week instittency.
- 21:00Speaker 4: Yeah, so now you had a long week, now you
- 21:03Speaker 4: got the short week, and I know you're really good about,
- 21:07Speaker 4: you know, manipulating how many hours you got to work
- 21:10Speaker 4: with during the course of the week and keeping your
- 21:13Speaker 4: players fresh and the players really appreciate the way you
- 21:16Speaker 4: handle that part of their business. What do you have
- 21:19Speaker 4: in mind for this week for your players?
- 21:20Speaker 12: Yeah, it's a modified week we've we've gone through before,
- 21:24Speaker 12: so we'll start a little later on Wednesday with the
- 21:25Speaker 12: jog through and then get our full speed work in
- 21:27Speaker 12: on Thursday and Friday.
- 21:29Speaker 4: So next up, like you said, Tennessee, the Callahan men.
- 21:33Speaker 4: Obviously they're very close to you. They think they think
- 21:38Speaker 4: the world of you, and you think the world of them.
- 21:40Speaker 4: It's going to be very interesting competing against friends like that,
- 21:43Speaker 4: but hey, it's the National Football League. Man best man wins.
- 21:46Speaker 12: Yeah, a lot of respect for them and the job
- 21:48Speaker 12: that they're doing and the foundation they're laying. But we
- 21:50Speaker 12: want to go in there and get a win, get
- 21:51Speaker 12: too in a row.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Up next a one o'clock road game next Sunday against
- 21:56Speaker 1: old friend Brian Callahan and the three and ten Tennessee Titans.
- 22:01Speaker 1: The Bengals open is a five and a half point favorite.
- 22:05Speaker 1: The Bengals Booth Podcast is brought to you by pay Corps,
- 22:07Speaker 1: proud to be the Bengals official HR software provider by

- 22:15Speaker 1: business and community to a new level and by Kettering
- 22:19Speaker 1: Health the best care for the best fans. Kettering Health
- 22:23Speaker 1: is the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. Now time
- 22:27Speaker 1: for the radio guys recap. All right, Lap, you got
- 22:32Speaker 1: admitted into Harvard. You've got a good vocabulary. What words
- 22:37Speaker 1: would you use to describe Jamar Chase at this point
- 22:39Speaker 1: after fourteen catches one hundred and seventy seven yards and
- 22:42Speaker 1: his fourteenth and fifteenth touchdown catches of the year.
- 22:46Speaker 4: Wow, I mean, I mean, it's just he's one to one.
- 22:51Speaker 4: Everything that he does he does so extraordinarily well. And
- 22:55Speaker 4: it's not like, Okay, pick five traits and you got
- 22:59Speaker 4: to have maybe two or three of them, all five
- 23:02Speaker 4: of them, I mean, and to do what he does
- 23:06Speaker 4: mentally and physically. Joe Burrow as well, both of these guys, Zimmer,
- 23:11Speaker 4: it's exhausting to go through a game and figure out
- 23:16Speaker 4: all of his pressure packages. How do you adjust off
- 23:18Speaker 4: those pressure packages? I mean, it is such a challenge
- 23:22Speaker 4: mentally and physically because they play a physical brand of football.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Telling you, man, I admire both of those guys because
- 23:29Speaker 4: they left it all out there. I mean, they are
- 23:31Speaker 4: spent mentally, physically, emotionally, I mean, every way he can
- 23:36Speaker 4: be spent. They're spent. And I'm glad that they are
- 23:39Speaker 4: spent after a victory, because you know, we were talking
- 23:43Speaker 4: about it. Oh no, in twenty twenty two, in that
- 23:46Speaker 4: game seventeen seventeen, after the Bengals went nineteen plays eighty
- 23:50Speaker 4: three yards to tie the game Dallas in fifty seven seconds,
- 23:53Speaker 4: thirty three yards and six plays have a walk.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Off field goal with the same quarterback, with.
- 23:57Speaker 4: The same quarterback, and it's twenty seventeen, thinking, oh no, man,
- 24:02Speaker 4: good thing he tried to pick that block punt up.
- 24:04Speaker 4: I want to kiss that guy right on the mouth.
- 24:06Speaker 4: I'm telling you, man, you know it's like your football
- 24:10Speaker 4: instincts say, it's there, pick it up. Make a play,
- 24:13Speaker 4: you know, not necessarily trying to be a hero, just
- 24:16Speaker 4: try to in your mind you're making a play that's
- 24:18Speaker 4: going to help your football team win a game. Man,
- 24:21Speaker 4: the worst thing you could have done, just stay away
- 24:23Speaker 4: from it. I mean that ball, that ball bounces, funny man,
- 24:26Speaker 4: stay away from that bad boy, and the Bengals took
- 24:29Speaker 4: full advantage of that fomal.
- 24:31Speaker 1: What are the odds to a former Bengal Nick Vitchell
- 24:33Speaker 1: hadn't heard that name in years. He blocks the punt,
- 24:36Speaker 1: and then the guy you were referring to, Amani oh
- 24:39Speaker 1: Ruwaia just added to the roster with a colossal blunder,
- 24:44Speaker 1: the type of blunder that Cowboys fans are going to
- 24:47Speaker 1: be talking about for years.
- 24:48Speaker 4: And I'll guarantee you that he was not in John
- 24:52Speaker 4: Fasto Special teams meetings during the course of the week.
- 24:55Speaker 4: I mean, you know, he's new to the roster. I mean,
- 24:57Speaker 4: they just picked the guy up basically, and I'm sure
- 25:00Speaker 4: owens is Uh is not is not happy. I mean,
- 25:02Speaker 4: you talk about, you know, the thriller victory in the
- 25:05Speaker 4: Agony defeat. He sees a guy blocking punt. He's got
- 25:08Speaker 4: the thriller victory. Darren Simmons got the agon to defeat,
- 25:11Speaker 4: and then you see a player do that, and all
- 25:13Speaker 4: of a sudden, the guy who had the thriller victory
- 25:15Speaker 4: is now got the agon to defeat, and Darren Simmons
- 25:17Speaker 4: has got the thriller victory and walking off, you know,
- 25:20Speaker 4: smoking the victory a cigar as such. It's it's just
- 25:23Speaker 4: the way it is in the in the game of football.
- 25:26Speaker 4: The football gods giveth and they taketh away, and they
- 25:29Speaker 4: can be cruel.
- 25:30Speaker 10: There's no question.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Nobody seemed to upset that Jamar Chase didn't go into
- 25:34Speaker 1: a slide at the one yard line.
- 25:36Speaker 4: No, that's I mean, that's that's a that's a hard
- 25:39Speaker 4: thing to do as well. It's like, I know, I
- 25:41Speaker 4: know it's talked about, you go over it, but man,
- 25:44Speaker 4: once you're in that situation, you make a great play.
- 25:46Speaker 4: I mean, it's tight coverage and you make a great
- 25:49Speaker 4: play like that and lead blanding the dust and it's like, man,
- 25:52Speaker 4: all you're thinking you're seeing golden goal posts.
- 25:54Speaker 10: You know you're not.
- 25:55Speaker 4: You're not thinking that, You're not thinking anything more than that.
- 25:57Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean, the best thing, you know, would
- 26:00Speaker 4: have been sit down at the one yard line, built
- 26:03Speaker 4: the rest of the clock, kick a game winning field goal,
- 26:06Speaker 4: and get out of town.
- 26:07Speaker 1: On the other hand, you got a brand new kicker
- 26:09Speaker 1: just join the team on Thursday. I mean, do you
- 26:12Speaker 1: really want to risk it? I mean, Kay York was great,
- 26:15Speaker 1: to his credit, made all his kicks, blasted all of
- 26:17Speaker 1: his kickoffs through the back of the end zone, But
- 26:19Speaker 1: do you want to put that kind of pressure on him?
- 26:22Speaker 2: In his first Bengals game, and you.
- 26:23Speaker 4: Know, analytics would never even consider that. I mean, when
- 26:26Speaker 4: you're looking at analytics, they're not looking at that kind
- 26:28Speaker 4: of thing. And that's why you know, I analytics are okay,
- 26:32Speaker 4: but I am not, like, you know, live and die
- 26:35Speaker 4: on analytics, because there's always circumstances in a game that
- 26:39Speaker 4: are different and you're going to have, you know, personnel
- 26:42Speaker 4: issues like this that you never dream of. I mean,
- 26:45Speaker 4: the guy that gave you the opportunity was somebody that
- 26:49Speaker 4: wasn't on the football team when they broke training camp.
- 26:51Speaker 4: The kicker wasn't on the football team for the Bengals
- 26:53Speaker 4: when they broke training camp. I mean, it's that's life's
- 26:56Speaker 4: in the National Football League. You you make a lot
- 27:00Speaker 4: of roster moves, there's a lot of injuries. You have
- 27:02Speaker 4: to massage your roster, you know, on a weekly basis
- 27:05Speaker 4: and man getting everybody up to speed as much as
- 27:09Speaker 4: you possibly can. You try to cover everything, but sometimes
- 27:12Speaker 4: there's just not enough time to get it all covered.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Let's talk about that young puppet right tackle a Marius Mims,
- 27:19Speaker 1: Michael Parsons, no tackles, no sacks, a couple of quarterback hits,
- 27:23Speaker 1: but no tackles, no sacks.
- 27:26Speaker 4: I think a Marius Mims. Let's face it, in the
- 27:31Speaker 4: in the four weeks that he's been back, they had
- 27:34Speaker 4: sixteen sacks as a team, and he had his share.
- 27:37Speaker 4: They were tied for most in the National Football League
- 27:39Speaker 4: in that four week span with the Denver Broncos, and
- 27:43Speaker 4: a Marius Mims played his ass off quite frankly, I
- 27:46Speaker 4: mean this this guy is a big man that has athleticism, mobility.
- 27:52Speaker 4: You know, he's he's made of the right stuff, both
- 27:54Speaker 4: both mentally and physically. He's extremely intelligent, he's got a
- 27:58Speaker 4: high football IQ as well overall intelligence and telling you
- 28:02Speaker 4: this guy is uh, he's going to be a special,
- 28:05Speaker 4: special guy at the end of the line of scrimmage
- 28:07Speaker 4: for a lot of years. And you know, when you
- 28:09Speaker 4: look at it, I know Orlando is fighting, fighting injury,
- 28:12Speaker 4: trying to come back and do everything you can. But
- 28:15Speaker 4: when when those two are healthy and performing at the
- 28:17Speaker 4: level that they can perform at man, that's a great
- 28:19Speaker 4: feeling for Joe Burrow.
- 28:20Speaker 10: I mean a great feeling.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Big clinching sack for big play Tray, giving him twelve
- 28:26Speaker 1: and a half for the year, but another sack for
- 28:28Speaker 1: Joseph Aside now you talk to him after the game,
- 28:31Speaker 1: had the block field goal last week. He's now had
- 28:33Speaker 1: a sack at each of his last three games. He
- 28:36Speaker 1: is coming on at the tail end of his fourth
- 28:39Speaker 1: NFL season.
- 28:40Speaker 4: And he and Trey Henderson worked so hard in the offseason.
- 28:44Speaker 4: Joey Bisse was saying that those guys were in there
- 28:46Speaker 4: every day. They were they were there before him to
- 28:48Speaker 4: open the weight room up. And uh and so that
- 28:52Speaker 4: hard work is paying off.
- 28:54Speaker 10: And uh and you uh, you know, you.
- 28:57Speaker 4: Get both of those guys make key plays defensive players
- 29:01Speaker 4: in that football game, and you know that's where that's
- 29:04Speaker 4: where the Bengals, you know, they need to get that
- 29:07Speaker 4: pass rush pass rush going, and those guys are going
- 29:10Speaker 4: to be two huge contributors as the final month of
- 29:14Speaker 4: the season unfolds.
- 29:15Speaker 1: They had some troubles on run defense r he could
- 29:18Speaker 1: Dada end up having a big game, but the pass
- 29:20Speaker 1: defense by and large is very good.
- 29:21Speaker 4: In this game, it was you know, and uh, you know,
- 29:24Speaker 4: I think I think the pressure and coverage combination was
- 29:29Speaker 4: pretty good. And Cooper Rush a pretty accurate guy, and
- 29:32Speaker 4: he was off by a lot on some of his throws.
- 29:36Speaker 4: I mean, you know, it looked like he was he
- 29:39Speaker 4: was worried about putting the ball in danger because he
- 29:41Speaker 4: really couldn't see. He didn't have a good feel for it,
- 29:43Speaker 4: and he missed. He missed some throws that were, you know,
- 29:48Speaker 4: pretty extraordinary. And then when he when he was on
- 29:51Speaker 4: the money a little bit, the coverage was there, like
- 29:53Speaker 4: you said, so I think the pass rush in the
- 29:56Speaker 4: in the back end coverage. They played very good, complimentary
- 29:59Speaker 4: football today.
- 30:00Speaker 1: So a primetime road win for the second time this year,
- 30:03Speaker 1: that's hard to do. They got one in New York
- 30:05Speaker 1: against the Giants, they get one in Dallas tonight, and
- 30:08Speaker 1: now we can go back and here's where we are different.
- 30:12Speaker 1: I can't wait to watch the Simpsons version of this game.
- 30:16Speaker 1: And I'm guessing that's the last thing that you're going
- 30:18Speaker 1: to do.
- 30:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm just gonna hear about it from my grandson
- 30:22Speaker 4: because I know Casey Casey Sickon was watching it, and
- 30:25Speaker 4: I'm sure he'll he'll have a lot to say about it,
- 30:28Speaker 4: so I'll get I'll get his feedback. But yeah, it's
- 30:34Speaker 4: just it's good to get a good to get a w.
- 30:36Speaker 4: I mean, every game in the National Football like, particularly
- 30:40Speaker 4: for the Bengals. This year has been a battle. I mean,
- 30:42Speaker 4: you know, another one score game and now they're you
- 30:46Speaker 4: know two and eight and those bad two and seven
- 30:48Speaker 4: and those bad boys instead of just having that one
- 30:51Speaker 4: lonely victory.
- 30:53Speaker 1: That puts a rap on the Cowboys game. Now it's
- 30:56Speaker 1: time for this week's fun Fact segment where you get
- 30:58Speaker 1: to know the person under the pads. Time for some
- 31:03Speaker 1: fun facts with Josh Newton from Monroe, Louisiana that's in
- 31:07Speaker 1: the northern part of the state of Louisiana, not too
- 31:10Speaker 1: far from the Arkansas state line. Tell us a little
- 31:13Speaker 1: bit about your hometown and what you like to do
- 31:15Speaker 1: growing up there.
- 31:17Speaker 7: Very small me growing up. I grew up outside a
- 31:20Speaker 7: lot so riding schools, playing football, basketball, kickball, any ball
- 31:26Speaker 7: you could find. We played it in the neighborhood so
- 31:28Speaker 7: hide and go seek, man. I mean, it was just
- 31:32Speaker 7: really active. So it's kind of like Will helped me
- 31:35Speaker 7: as far as being an athlete, just being active when
- 31:37Speaker 7: I was a young kid.
- 31:39Speaker 1: For visiting with Josh Newton around draft time, you were
- 31:42Speaker 1: asked about why you played football, and you said, my
- 31:45Speaker 1: why is to retire my mama. There's a lot of
- 31:48Speaker 1: love and respect in that sentence, tell us about your mom.
- 31:52Speaker 7: Oh, very strong, very open, kind hearted, lovely person, respects people,
- 31:57Speaker 7: leeds respect, and she's definitely still there to me, and
- 32:01Speaker 7: I try to exploit that to people. Lee with love,
- 32:05Speaker 7: leave with spaceball. Also, you're not gonna be able to
- 32:07Speaker 7: run over me as well, So just watching her for
- 32:11Speaker 7: a long time, studying her and you know, also growing
- 32:14Speaker 7: into my own shoes as well, because you know, that's
- 32:17Speaker 7: what it w That's what it that's what it is.
- 32:20Speaker 1: You were an outstanding wide receiver in high school, but
- 32:23Speaker 1: colleges didn't beat a path to your door. Was it
- 32:26Speaker 1: frustrating or hard to understand?
- 32:29Speaker 7: I feel like it was just more the more for
- 32:31Speaker 7: me to just understand for her, cause I was really
- 32:33Speaker 7: new to all the office. I was just playing football,
- 32:37Speaker 7: so I really didn't know how who to get in
- 32:39Speaker 7: contact with or you know, sending emails or none of that.
- 32:44Speaker 7: So I mean I only end up when one offering,
- 32:47Speaker 7: that's all I needed.
- 32:49Speaker 1: That one offer came from your hometown school, the University
- 32:52Speaker 1: of Louisiana Monroe. Did you like playing close to home?
- 32:55Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 32:56Speaker 7: I did, I did. I enjoyed it for sure. It
- 32:59Speaker 7: wasn't five but at the end of the day, you
- 33:01Speaker 7: got to start somewhere, so you just do the work
- 33:04Speaker 7: and everything else will come.
- 33:06Speaker 1: In twenty twenty, the pandemic year in college football, Louisiana
- 33:11Speaker 1: and Road didn't win a game.
- 33:12Speaker 10: I'll in ten.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Did you learn anything from going through that?
- 33:15Speaker 7: I learned a lot. I learned a lot, a lot,
- 33:18Speaker 7: a lot, like a bookworth. I'm already trying to get
- 33:21Speaker 7: too much doubt, but I just see, you know, I've
- 33:23Speaker 7: seen a lot of true colors.
- 33:26Speaker 1: After four years at ULM, you transferred to TCU. I've
- 33:30Speaker 1: been on the TCU campus. The facilities are spectacular. It's
- 33:34Speaker 1: an amazing place. Did you feel like you had died
- 33:36Speaker 1: and gone to heaven.
- 33:38Speaker 7: For a little bit? But once I got there, it's like, Okay,
- 33:41Speaker 7: this is what it is now. But bro, they even
- 33:43Speaker 7: they renovating again off the championship year. So whenever I
- 33:47Speaker 7: get back, whenever I go back in like, was it
- 33:49Speaker 7: twenty five, So they should be done like twenty five,
- 33:53Speaker 7: So whenever I go back, it's gonna even look even
- 33:56Speaker 7: more different.
- 33:57Speaker 1: They also have gigantic pictures of their former stuff all
- 34:00Speaker 1: over the place. It's like a shrine to Andy Dalton.
- 34:02Speaker 1: There do you anticipate that there's going to be some
- 34:05Speaker 1: nice images of Josh Newton on display.
- 34:08Speaker 7: Uh, we'll see after my career does what it does.
- 34:13Speaker 7: Planning for a long time, so whenever that's finished, we'll see.
- 34:17Speaker 7: But I ain't no first, second round, third round peak.
- 34:20Speaker 7: So it's you know, you gotta do a little bit
- 34:23Speaker 7: more work.
- 34:23Speaker 1: So in your first year at TCU, you made a
- 34:26Speaker 1: famous training camp speech for a team that ultimately made
- 34:29Speaker 1: it to the National Championship Game. You said, quote, God
- 34:33Speaker 1: gave us change for the ones that have been here.
- 34:35Speaker 1: They gave you a new staff. He gave me a
- 34:38Speaker 1: new home and a new family. Now what are we
- 34:41Speaker 1: going to do with it? That's powerful stuff. Do you
- 34:44Speaker 1: believe it had an impact.
- 34:46Speaker 7: Most definitely over over time, over time, it just you know,
- 34:51Speaker 7: everybody said that this much was they was ready to
- 34:54Speaker 7: go play after that that day.
- 34:56Speaker 1: It's gotten a lot of hits on YouTube over the years.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Have a lot of people that you've never met come
- 35:01Speaker 1: up to you and asked you about that speech.
- 35:04Speaker 7: I say a lot of like Bingle saying, for sure,
- 35:07Speaker 7: like once I got drafted. Once everybody's still okay. Once
- 35:11Speaker 7: you get drafted, they go do a little bit deeper research,
- 35:13Speaker 7: and you know I got a few things about that
- 35:17Speaker 7: for sure.
- 35:18Speaker 1: For chatting with Josh Newton. That team was picked to
- 35:20Speaker 1: finish seventh in the Big Twelve. You won the league,
- 35:24Speaker 1: you upset Michigan and the Fiesta Ball. You made it
- 35:26Speaker 1: to the National Championship before losing to Georgia. Is there
- 35:30Speaker 1: a game or a play or a moment that really
- 35:32Speaker 1: stands out for you?
- 35:34Speaker 7: For me, I don't even want to because if I
- 35:38Speaker 7: say a play, don't remember another player and then we're
- 35:40Speaker 7: gonna I can't even I can't even do the game
- 35:43Speaker 7: like that.
- 35:44Speaker 1: You were selected in the fifth round of this year's draft.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Describe the draft weekend.
- 35:50Speaker 7: Oh, I'm just ready. I was ready to get it
- 35:53Speaker 7: over with, get the football, get to the meetings, get
- 35:58Speaker 7: to knowing the guys, getting communicating on the playbook. Like
- 36:03Speaker 7: I was just ready to get it over with. See
- 36:04Speaker 7: where I'm going? You get to play in ball.
- 36:07Speaker 1: So much work leads up to that moment when you
- 36:11Speaker 1: looked at your phone and you saw five one three,
- 36:14Speaker 1: pay Court Stadium, whatever it's said.
- 36:16Speaker 7: I was first of all, I was like, pay Court Stadium.
- 36:19Speaker 7: I've never heard of this stadium in my life. But
- 36:23Speaker 7: it didn't say Cincinnati and nothing, so he said, it's
- 36:26Speaker 7: Zack Taylor Cincinnati Bans. I'm like, oh shit, but now
- 36:33Speaker 7: I talk my people from the day four, I'm like, bro,
- 36:35Speaker 7: like y'all just on know, like it's a contender team bro.
- 36:39Speaker 7: Like two three years ago they was just in the
- 36:42Speaker 7: Super Bowl with they ain't need the same guys that
- 36:45Speaker 7: we still have on the roster. So I was. I
- 36:48Speaker 7: was more excited as far as getting to the business
- 36:51Speaker 7: part of it, getting to work with Joe Burrow, Jamar
- 36:54Speaker 7: Chase t Higgins, Ted, Jermaine Logan, Trey cam Mike, Like,
- 37:03Speaker 7: like just knowing who you about to get a chance
- 37:05Speaker 7: to go to work with. I mean, bruh, I w
- 37:07Speaker 7: I will cite.
- 37:09Speaker 1: What's it take to be a great corner back in
- 37:12Speaker 1: the NFL?
- 37:13Speaker 7: Oh mentality for sure? Uh yeah, I have no fear.
- 37:17Speaker 7: He can't be scared to lose. Uh, just knowing what
- 37:20Speaker 7: you signed up for and like it's it's on you,
- 37:23Speaker 7: Like nobody else can say you. You gotta be a
- 37:25Speaker 7: Navy seal. And it's like when Navy seals get caught
- 37:29Speaker 7: its life or death, they know they about to face
- 37:31Speaker 7: in first situation. It's just like they not they not
- 37:35Speaker 7: thinking they n they going into the battle, not even
- 37:37Speaker 7: thinking they finna come out alive until they come out alive.
- 37:41Speaker 7: So just I feel like it's that same type of
- 37:43Speaker 7: mentality when you go out there on the island, bru.
- 37:45Speaker 7: You gotta you gotta fight to survive. For sure.
- 37:49Speaker 1: A lot of guys who played wide receiver in high
- 37:51Speaker 1: school and then get switched to defensive back when they're
- 37:54Speaker 1: in college were forced to do it by the coaching staff,
- 37:57Speaker 1: or at least strongly told that they should try and
- 37:59Speaker 1: do it. That wasn't the case for you, right, no, I.
- 38:02Speaker 7: Asked, So I was. My thing was is like, okay,
- 38:05Speaker 7: ten receivers versus four corners.
- 38:09Speaker 10: And it's math.
- 38:10Speaker 7: Yeah, it's math. So I mean, you know made the
- 38:13Speaker 7: right choice.
- 38:14Speaker 1: When you say ten receivers versus four corners? Is that
- 38:17Speaker 1: in terms of getting on the field at that stage
- 38:20Speaker 1: or thinking about the pros down the.
- 38:22Speaker 7: Road, both right now and because if you don't get
- 38:25Speaker 7: on the field right now, you can't set yourself up
- 38:27Speaker 7: for later. So that was my whole I guess, not
- 38:30Speaker 7: that I was a bad receiver. It's just like, man,
- 38:32Speaker 7: look like my size at receiver is is mediocre, below
- 38:40Speaker 7: average with my size at corner it's above average to
- 38:45Speaker 7: right on points. So it's like, you know, I just
- 38:47Speaker 7: made that decision and ran with it.
- 38:50Speaker 1: Smart decision. All right, a few wild card topics now
- 38:53Speaker 1: for Josh Newton, who's your all time favorite athlete in
- 38:57Speaker 1: any sport?
- 38:58Speaker 7: And why Kobe? And it's not because of the cliche
- 39:03Speaker 7: things the championships. Is the little things that he took serious,
- 39:10Speaker 7: like a lot of things that I feel like, ass
- 39:14Speaker 7: you a young human period, like you may not take
- 39:17Speaker 7: taking the trash out series. You might not take doing
- 39:21Speaker 7: the dishes or making your bed, or you might not
- 39:23Speaker 7: take all that stuff serious. But once you get into
- 39:27Speaker 7: a certain a certain area of a certain hierarchy or
- 39:30Speaker 7: a certain level and where expectation follows this what you wanted,
- 39:35Speaker 7: and then it's like, okay, now you don't really know
- 39:38Speaker 7: how to be consistent because you ain't been doing the
- 39:40Speaker 7: every day thing. So the thing about that made Kobe
- 39:43Speaker 7: just different. He did the everything every day things like
- 39:47Speaker 7: like it was just his last day living and he
- 39:50Speaker 7: took you serious, or he was passionate about with everything
- 39:52Speaker 7: he did. He had a purpose and he knew his purpose.
- 39:56Speaker 7: He walked with his purpose. He had confidence in his purpose,
- 39:59Speaker 7: and I wish he was still living just so I
- 40:01Speaker 7: can have a chance to meet him. But no, he's
- 40:04Speaker 7: definitely like just he did to meet even though I
- 40:06Speaker 7: didn't really get to meet him for sure.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Did it shake you when he passed?
- 40:10Speaker 7: Yeah, I couldn't believe. I'm like bro all people and
- 40:13Speaker 7: it's like, I don't wish that from nobody, not a
- 40:15Speaker 7: soul living. But it's just like Kobe, let me, like,
- 40:19Speaker 7: let me at least make it to the lead where
- 40:20Speaker 7: I could at least, you know what I'm saying. I
- 40:23Speaker 7: could move around a little bit. I could fly to La,
- 40:25Speaker 7: I could catch a game or catch him at a
- 40:27Speaker 7: game or something like that. But it's just like, you know,
- 40:30Speaker 7: you know, life happens, and you know they don't start
- 40:33Speaker 7: from nobody.
- 40:34Speaker 1: You told me during training camp that you like to cook,
- 40:37Speaker 1: and you shared this wisdom that I thought was great.
- 40:41Speaker 1: If the food is flavored, it will cook itself. That
- 40:45Speaker 1: is all about seasoning. That is really good chef advice.
- 40:48Speaker 7: Yeah, you only you only do that through experience though cooking.
- 40:51Speaker 7: And you know I done messed up grits. I haven't
- 40:54Speaker 7: missed the rights, but nah, and you know, just trial
- 40:57Speaker 7: and error and just over time you eventually you find
- 41:01Speaker 7: your you find your little niche, you find your Okay,
- 41:03Speaker 7: I like this, I like how I did that, or
- 41:05Speaker 7: I remember this, so you know. So I mean, you
- 41:08Speaker 7: gotta get in the you gotta get in the kitchen
- 41:11Speaker 7: to you know, give advice.
- 41:13Speaker 1: You also told me that cooking and the patience required
- 41:17Speaker 1: to do it well help you be more patient in
- 41:19Speaker 1: the rest of your life.
- 41:20Speaker 7: Yeah, it does. I mean, if a two year old
- 41:25Speaker 7: two year old baby teachers a mother or father patients,
- 41:29Speaker 7: I mean, it's a lot of more things they can
- 41:32Speaker 7: teach you patience as well. It's just one one way
- 41:34Speaker 7: to learn Patience's just I feel like that's the most
- 41:37Speaker 7: common way we all learn patience. It's dough, like giving
- 41:40Speaker 7: birth to a child. Anybody said that when they like,
- 41:44Speaker 7: I'd have had to grow patience. I didn't. I had
- 41:47Speaker 7: to come. I done had to calm down. I didn't
- 41:48Speaker 7: have to you know, you done had to do something.
- 41:51Speaker 7: Something made you. And you know, but when you out
- 41:56Speaker 7: there on the island when bullets and fly on bullets
- 42:00Speaker 7: flying at the end of the day, like you have
- 42:02Speaker 7: to and exhaled and be calm through the situation. For sure.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Your nickname is fig as in Fig Newton's. I'll be honest,
- 42:13Speaker 1: I'm not a fan. I'm good cookie either.
- 42:17Speaker 7: It's just about it. Just I was like, bro, I'm
- 42:18Speaker 7: gonna start calling you feed feed Newton. And then the
- 42:21Speaker 7: rest of the rest of the rest of the meat
- 42:24Speaker 7: room went with it, and I went with it too,
- 42:26Speaker 7: So I mean, it is what it is. Nice, it's
- 42:28Speaker 7: it's easy, it's quick. You don't have to you know
- 42:31Speaker 7: what I'm saying.
- 42:33Speaker 1: I like the nickname. And if they want to give
- 42:36Speaker 1: you a contract to endorse the cookie.
- 42:38Speaker 7: Come on with it, it can come on with it.
- 42:40Speaker 7: I am down. I'm down. I definitely will Yeah, for sure.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Where do you like to spend your money on?
- 42:50Speaker 7: I like good food. I'm not gonna lie I'm a
- 42:52Speaker 7: good food person. I like Jeff Rubis. I haven't hit
- 42:56Speaker 7: the rest of the spots yet, but Jeff Rubis, Rue,
- 42:59Speaker 7: Chris red Feather. It's a couple more spots, you know.
- 43:03Speaker 7: I like, you know, just is consistent fried rice with
- 43:08Speaker 7: the egg. I'm good like it's just a good meal
- 43:10Speaker 7: for me just because I'm an athlete. It's rice. You
- 43:13Speaker 7: got your protein good? All right?
- 43:16Speaker 1: Final fun fact for Josh Newton. This one's kind of deep.
- 43:21Speaker 1: If you could meet anybody in history, living or deceased,
- 43:26Speaker 1: who would that person be?
- 43:28Speaker 7: Oh? How many people? I get.
- 43:31Speaker 1: You can have as many as you like.
- 43:33Speaker 7: Martin, Luther, King, Malcolm X, Kobe Bryant, Bernie Mac, James, Wooderspoon.
- 43:44Speaker 7: He played on Friday, he played, He was Crags Kris
- 43:48Speaker 7: that ice cubes at on Friday, Like super funny, Like
- 43:53Speaker 7: he just passed like with them, I say, like the
- 43:55Speaker 7: last two to three years. But yeah, that was fin Malcolm, Ma,
- 43:59Speaker 7: Marlin Luther, Kobe Bryant, Bernie Mack, Bernie, Matt James with
- 44:04Speaker 7: just for sure Late, that's a good mix legends legends
- 44:09Speaker 7: for sure.
- 44:11Speaker 1: All right, this has been fun. I appreciate your time.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Best of luck the rest of the year.
- 44:16Speaker 7: Thank you.
