- 0:01Speaker 1: It's always good to get away for a few days.
- 0:04Speaker 1: I've always wanted to go to Salem, Massachusetts. It's the
- 0:07Speaker 1: weirdest fixation I have with the Salem witch trials and
- 0:11Speaker 1: how collective hysteria can lead to the execution of 20 people.
- 0:17Speaker 1: They hanged 19 women and men, and they pressed a
- 0:21Speaker 1: guy to death, some 80-year-old.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Oh, Lord.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Yeah, they didn't like him at all.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Golly.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Well, but the stories behind all the executions are crazy.
- 0:31Speaker 1: And Salem is one of those charming, picturesque, historic American
- 0:37Speaker 1: towns right on the water.
- 0:39Speaker 2: It's northeast of Boston. I've never been. I've always wanted to.
- 0:42Speaker 2: So I was eager to hear.
- 0:43Speaker 1: About your trip. Me too. I've always wanted to go.
- 0:45Speaker 1: And it's October. They've now taken the whole month of
- 0:48Speaker 1: October and turned it into a celebration of all things witches.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Well, is there a Halloween connection there? Because if there's
- 0:55Speaker 2: one thing I've learned, this town does enjoy having some
- 0:57Speaker 2: fun with the history. The local high school nickname is
- 1:01Speaker 2: The Witches.
- 1:02Speaker 1: They've got a giant statue to bewitch the star Elizabeth Montgomery. Oh,
- 1:09Speaker 1: my gosh. Which is very controversial because the locals resent
- 1:12Speaker 1: the heck out of it. Somebody once threw red paint
- 1:15Speaker 1: on the statue because they feel it insults. Now, you
- 1:18Speaker 1: remember this. No, no, please finish that sentence. They feel
- 1:21Speaker 1: it insults real witches? What? It degrades the memory of
- 1:26Speaker 1: the women and the men who were put to death. Oh, right.
- 1:29Speaker 1: And it trivializes it. I didn't remember this. Did you
- 1:32Speaker 1: remember that Bewitched was actually filmed for a whole season
- 1:35Speaker 1: in Salem, Massachusetts? I'll bet you don't remember that. I
- 1:38Speaker 1: didn't remember. I may throw down BS. Why in the
- 1:43Speaker 1: world would they do that? Because the studio that they
- 1:45Speaker 1: were filming Bewitched in burned to the ground and they
- 1:48Speaker 1: needed to film somewhere and they decided to take it
- 1:50Speaker 1: to Salem. No, it's not.
- 1:52Speaker 2: So rather than stay in Los Angeles, let's go to Salem, Massachusetts.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I mean, it was a bit because it was Salem, Massachusetts,
- 2:00Speaker 1: home of the witchcraft trials and all that. All right. Well, Mark, no,
- 2:03Speaker 1: it did happen.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I mean, maybe for an episode, but you're telling me
- 2:07Speaker 2: an entire season of Bewitched was filmed in Salem, Massachusetts.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Do me a favor. Save your pomposity for 30 seconds,
- 2:15Speaker 1: and let me educate you. Yes, Bewitched was filmed for
- 2:17Speaker 1: an entire— Go right ahead, because you know what I'll
- 2:19Speaker 1: be doing. You know what I'll be doing, so you
- 2:20Speaker 1: just talk about it. Go look right now. All eight
- 2:22Speaker 1: episodes for that particular season were filmed in Salem, Massachusetts.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Excuse me.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Eight episodes. There was 39 episodes in the average TV
- 2:30Speaker 2: season back then.
- 2:30Speaker 1: It was a season of eight episodes, Smarty Pants, and
- 2:34Speaker 1: they called it a season. I even know where they
- 2:37Speaker 1: put Elizabeth Montgomery. She stayed at the Hawthorne Hotel. So, no,
- 2:40Speaker 1: I just got back from there, Smarty. You think I
- 2:43Speaker 1: don't know what I'm talking about? Okay, sure. So they
- 2:46Speaker 1: build a statue to her and then they throw paint
- 2:49Speaker 1: on it because they think it's degrading. Anyway, the whole
- 2:51Speaker 1: thing is a blast. I mean, the town, it's this chart.
- 2:55Speaker 1: And I love, I'm into history lately. I'm into these
- 2:58Speaker 1: tours and these houses. You know, and I just handed
- 3:03Speaker 1: out to the team here Gibraltar's Gibraltar's, the very first
- 3:07Speaker 1: commercial candy ever in America made in Salem, Massachusetts by
- 3:11Speaker 1: Mary Spencer. She started making them for the sailors that
- 3:14Speaker 1: would go out to sea. And they're called Gibraltar's. They're
- 3:17Speaker 1: like this weird they're like hard candy, lemon and peppermint.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Coolest thing ever. So I've been giving those out to
- 3:24Speaker 1: everybody today. Anyway, great to go. Great to be back.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Did you find it? I see the little look on
- 3:29Speaker 1: your face. Did you see it? I did.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Asked TV critic Grok, was an entire season of Bewitched
- 3:35Speaker 2: filmed in Salem, Massachusetts? Yes. Answer is no.
- 3:39Speaker 1: No, that's where you're going to try to say it.
- 3:41Speaker 1: You got me? Because eight episodes don't constitute a season?
- 3:45Speaker 2: Because it doesn't. It was with it. Listen, be as
- 3:48Speaker 2: right as you are, because you do have a point.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I am right. And it's still kind of fun.
- 3:52Speaker 2: In season seven, episodes three through ten, so a portion
- 3:57Speaker 2: of that season, they did go Go to Salem for
- 3:59Speaker 2: seven seasons.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Eight episodes. You said, I'm calling BS. They didn't do...
- 4:02Speaker 1: A season. And does it explain because the movies, the
- 4:06Speaker 1: TV studio burned down? Looked at him, doubting Thomas.
- 4:09Speaker 2: The trip happened after a fire damaged part of the
- 4:12Speaker 2: Stevens house set in Hollywood.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I'm called BS.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I never doubted that.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Let's take 60 seconds and call BS. I never doubted that.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I doubted the whole season, which.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Of course, I was correct. I go away for a
- 4:23Speaker 1: few days and you become incorrigible. You are so full
- 4:26Speaker 1: of yourself, flying solo on the podcast while I'm back.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I am back. He's back, baby. And, Mark, while I'm away,
- 4:34Speaker 1: I'm watching stuff on my phone. Zoran Mamdani's pro-Palestinian statement.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Did you see where he went to dinner last night?
- 4:44Speaker 2: No.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Are you ready for this? I am. There is one
- 4:48Speaker 1: Palestinian restaurant on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
- 4:52Speaker 2: That's surprising.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Uh-huh. Guess where he went to dinner?
- 4:55Speaker 2: That one.
- 4:56Speaker 1: That one. He went to dinner. That's subtle. Huh? How
- 4:59Speaker 1: about that?
- 4:59Speaker 2: For those that don't know, and this was after, I guess,
- 5:01Speaker 2: after the show was over and the podcast was over yesterday,
- 5:05Speaker 2: Zoran Mamdani. Islamist, Marxist, blah, blah, blah, puts out an
- 5:09Speaker 2: October 7th statement. And the first paragraph is pretty darn great.
- 5:13Speaker 2: It says, we mourn. This was terrible. We remember those
- 5:16Speaker 2: lost in the October 7th attacks. And then for– perfunctory
- 5:20Speaker 2: and phony. And then for like three straight paragraphs, it's like, however,
- 5:25Speaker 2: the genocide in Gaza is also terrible. The lies, the anti-Semitism,
- 5:32Speaker 2: and he just got roasted all day for it and,
- 5:36Speaker 2: of course, did not care.
- 5:37Speaker 1: And didn't care because, again, having dinner at your local
- 5:40Speaker 1: friendly Palestinian restaurant. And then, of course– There's this hoax,
- 5:44Speaker 1: this charade, the playbook we've seen a thousand times where
- 5:48Speaker 1: they lie about something Trump said. And you know they
- 5:51Speaker 1: don't believe it. They don't believe a word that he
- 5:54Speaker 1: wants Iran to nuke L.A. and San Diego. We've seen
- 5:58Speaker 1: it over. And they take it. And they're the same
- 6:00Speaker 1: people who line up behind figures like Trump. Mamdani, there's
- 6:05Speaker 1: no hoax there. What he wrote about the genocide by
- 6:09Speaker 1: Israel wasn't a hoax. Or Abdul El-Sayed, a guy who's
- 6:14Speaker 1: cozy with extremists tied to the Iranian regime. But they
- 6:18Speaker 1: feign outrage at Trump for saying, you just wait. Watch
- 6:22Speaker 1: and see what would happen if they were to bomb L.A.
- 6:24Speaker 1: or San Diego. Exactly. My dog knew what he meant,
- 6:28Speaker 1: and I wondered so much. I so wished I missed it.
- 6:30Speaker 2: If there's any time I missed you the most, it
- 6:32Speaker 2: was that day, I guess, day before yesterday, where what
- 6:34Speaker 2: he said was, he said, look, I know gas is expensive,
- 6:38Speaker 2: but it's a small price to pay. Imagine the Iranians...
- 6:44Speaker 2: Los Angeles or San Diego. It's a small price to pay.
- 6:48Speaker 2: And everybody, listen, all you have to have is a
- 6:50Speaker 2: tiny brainstem to realize that's what he was talking about.
- 6:53Speaker 2: A bunch of people with intellectual dishonesty cranked up to 12, said,
- 6:58Speaker 2: look what he's doing. He's inviting the Iranians to attack
- 7:01Speaker 2: Los Angeles and San Diego. Is it just me, Mike?
- 7:03Speaker 2: Was it a straw breaking the camel's back? Because listen,
- 7:06Speaker 2: for 10 years, we've been used to the media culture
- 7:08Speaker 2: lying about him, berating him, attacking him. There's something about
- 7:12Speaker 2: this one that was so malicious, so intentional. I found
- 7:16Speaker 2: it And Gavin Newsom, J.D. Pritzker, this is disqualifying for
- 7:21Speaker 2: president of the United States. And anybody saying this on
- 7:23Speaker 2: TV should like take a month off or something like that.
- 7:26Speaker 2: There's something about this one that really hit me wrong.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Well, it hit a lot of Americans wrong. And I
- 7:31Speaker 1: think it's because we instinctively recognize what contempt they have
- 7:36Speaker 1: for the American people. Do you realize how they're insulting
- 7:39Speaker 1: the intelligence department? Of every man and woman who could
- 7:43Speaker 1: absorb what Trump said, know what he said, know the context.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Even ABC said it. I mean, I couldn't believe it
- 7:49Speaker 1: the other night. ABC posted very accurately that he is
- 7:53Speaker 1: pointing out how awful it would be if Iran nuked
- 7:57Speaker 1: an American city. ABC. But here's the mayor of Los Angeles,
- 8:01Speaker 1: Mayor Karen Bass. calling on the House Oversight and Government
- 8:07Speaker 1: Reform Committee to investigate the dangerous threats that President Trump
- 8:12Speaker 1: has encouraged against Angelenos. I saw that goofy Anna Navarro. Well,
- 8:18Speaker 1: you know who's in Los Angeles and San Diego. Latinos.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Brown people.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Brown people. He wants to nuke brown people. But they're
- 8:27Speaker 1: such bald-faced liars. But they have such disdain for the
- 8:32Speaker 1: American people. You do know they have to think we're just–
- 8:36Speaker 1: their lemmings are so stupid that they would buy them. True.
- 8:39Speaker 2: But here's the gamble they're making because X percent of
- 8:42Speaker 2: the American people are either a stupid or more likely–
- 8:47Speaker 2: just inattentive or maybe all they watch is the view
- 8:50Speaker 2: or all they do is catch somebody's stupid twitter feed
- 8:53Speaker 2: even the people who hate trump's guts on twitter like
- 8:56Speaker 2: jonah goldberg got this right but if somebody was just
- 8:59Speaker 2: one of those folks who's just paying marginal residual attention
- 9:04Speaker 2: and they saw this then maybe they believe it and
- 9:06Speaker 2: that's their bargain and they figured it was worth be
- 9:09Speaker 2: clowning themselves in order to maybe uh flip a few
- 9:12Speaker 2: votes well that's.
- 9:12Speaker 1: A good way to put it because it's humiliating that
- 9:14Speaker 1: they would even go down that path and it's pathetic
- 9:17Speaker 1: But meanwhile, on the other side of the aisle, we
- 9:19Speaker 1: got folks like Marco Rubio. Tell me you saw his
- 9:22Speaker 1: speech every minute of it.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Every minute of it.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I'm telling you, this guy's the real deal.
- 9:28Speaker 2: He is.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Every time he opens his mouth, more and more Americans
- 9:31Speaker 1: are saying, could that be our next president?
- 9:34Speaker 2: I would love it. And yet, and yet, I won't
- 9:38Speaker 2: run if my friend J.D. does, which I understand. He's
- 9:42Speaker 2: got to get over that. He's got to get over that.
- 9:44Speaker 2: I want the choice.
- 9:45Speaker 1: It was just a master class about how we should
- 9:48Speaker 1: not be ashamed to be proud of our country. We
- 9:51Speaker 1: should not. that nationalism is not a dirty word. Pride
- 9:55Speaker 1: in your country, and he did it at the birthplace
- 9:58Speaker 1: of Western civilization. It was so powerful. Although there is
- 10:01Speaker 1: that little pesky issue of Kimberly Guilfoyle.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Oh, my Lord.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Are you following that story?
- 10:07Speaker 2: Did she make a request of somebody of something in
- 10:11Speaker 2: conjunction with her ambassadorship?
- 10:12Speaker 1: $ 100, 000. Send that to my Amex and they'll never catch
- 10:16Speaker 1: the money. Oh, boy. That's a rough story. I don't
- 10:22Speaker 1: know if it's true. I was reading about it just
- 10:23Speaker 1: a moment ago in the Daily Caller. So we'll see
- 10:27Speaker 1: how that thing unfolds.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Well, okay, real quick. Our level of caring about a
- 10:32Speaker 2: Kimberly Guilfoyle story?
- 10:35Speaker 1: Well, she's the ambassador to Greece. So she's also, of course,
- 10:38Speaker 1: a former Fox News star.
- 10:40Speaker 2: And a former girlfriend of Don Jr., right?
- 10:43Speaker 1: That's right. And Gavin Newsom, right?
- 10:46Speaker 2: Correct, yeah. So she gets around. She's bipartisan.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Yeah, she's everywhere. But speaking of Fox News, has it
- 10:54Speaker 1: been fun to watch their 30th anniversary stuff this week?
- 10:58Speaker 2: It has. They ran a feature on The Five and,
- 11:02Speaker 2: first of all, showed old pictures of Greg and Jesse.
- 11:05Speaker 2: They're babies of Dana Perino, who just doesn't age. I
- 11:08Speaker 2: don't know what she's doing. And then they had this
- 11:10Speaker 2: little feature of employees you never know, never know the
- 11:13Speaker 2: names of, just talking about the technology. of 1996 running
- 11:17Speaker 2: a news network. You remember the movie Broadcast News? They
- 11:19Speaker 2: even showed a little clip of that with Holly Hunter
- 11:21Speaker 2: and William Hurt. Instead of just hitting a button and
- 11:26Speaker 2: sending an email or running a story, you had to
- 11:28Speaker 2: take a big clunky videotape and run it a mile
- 11:31Speaker 2: down a hallway and trip over people and spill coffee
- 11:34Speaker 2: in order to put it in a big clunky bay
- 11:36Speaker 2: and hit a button and play it on TV. It's
- 11:37Speaker 2: like stone knives and bear skins. I can only imagine.
- 11:40Speaker 1: And it's fun because I remember those days so fondly
- 11:42Speaker 1: because I was a contributor kind of early on. Spent
- 11:46Speaker 1: about nine or ten years of my life.
- 11:47Speaker 2: When did you secure that gig as a Fox contributor?
- 11:50Speaker 1: It had to be 1990. 9,000, maybe 2,000. Yeah, it
- 11:54Speaker 1: goes way back. What were you even doing? I mean,
- 11:57Speaker 1: what was yours at WNBC in New York?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Okay, gotcha.
- 12:01Speaker 1: And so I know a lot of these folks from– look,
- 12:03Speaker 1: one of the big top executives to this day at
- 12:05Speaker 1: Fox News was my producer in New York, Ron Mitchell.
- 12:08Speaker 1: He then went on to The O'Reilly Show and went
- 12:10Speaker 1: on to be one of the top dogs. Speaking finally
- 12:13Speaker 1: on the level of care, though, I got to ask
- 12:15Speaker 1: you about your level of caring over this– battle royale
- 12:20Speaker 1: over daylight saving time, President Trump has now picked a
- 12:24Speaker 1: fight with Tom Cotton. He gave out his cell phone number.
- 12:28Speaker 1: When he's really mad at you, you know, just ask
- 12:31Speaker 1: the memory of the late Lindsey Graham. He gives out
- 12:34Speaker 1: cell phone numbers. So he gave out Cotton's cell phone
- 12:36Speaker 1: number saying, urge him to get this thing done. Mark,
- 12:42Speaker 1: I can't even care a little bit. I don't care.
- 12:45Speaker 1: I care some.
- 12:46Speaker 2: What's going to get up in the middle of the night?
- 12:49Speaker 2: Which means it kind of doesn't matter. It's going to
- 12:51Speaker 2: be dark when I get up. No matter what. But
- 12:54Speaker 2: coming up in a few weeks when we go on
- 12:56Speaker 2: to daylight standard, when we go on to standard time again,
- 12:59Speaker 2: it's going to be, the sun's going to set at 545.
- 13:00Speaker 2: And that's insane. The sun needs to be up when
- 13:04Speaker 2: people are actually up and functioning. It's a safety issue.
- 13:08Speaker 2: It's a recreational issue. It's a lifestyle issue. I want
- 13:12Speaker 2: what Trump wants, and that's daylight saving time the way
- 13:14Speaker 2: it is right now.
- 13:15Speaker 1: All year long.
- 13:16Speaker 2: 12 months a year.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Well, Fox News says it's a popular issue with voters
- 13:20Speaker 1: and the president. There's a bill that passed the House.
- 13:23Speaker 1: That enacts the change. But Tom Cotton is digging in.
- 13:27Speaker 1: He's vowing to block it. And what he's saying, what's
- 13:31Speaker 1: his objection?
- 13:32Speaker 2: A lot of the people are worried about the darkness
- 13:35Speaker 2: in the morning when some of the kiddos are going
- 13:36Speaker 2: to school. And I'm not blind to that at all.
- 13:39Speaker 2: But everything's a trick. Slap some reflective tape on them.
- 13:44Speaker 1: They're all right. Oh, he's back, everybody. Just put some tape.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Get one of those little blinking lights, put it on
- 13:50Speaker 1: their beanies, put a little hat on with the blinks light.
- 13:52Speaker 2: They're fine.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Kids like darkness. Give me a break. Kids, they'll be fine.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Let them dart among the cars. Kids like darkness. Mike Gallagher, everybody.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Happy Thursday. See you on the podcast. I'm so glad
- 14:06Speaker 1: to be back. And I miss the podcast almost as
- 14:09Speaker 1: much as the talk show. So see you, Eminem Extra, Apple, Spotify, YouTube,
- 14:13Speaker 1: live at noon Eastern, 11 Central, and And I'll continue
- 14:16Speaker 1: to school you about this season that they spent up
- 14:19Speaker 1: in Salem, Massachusetts.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Not a full season. Not a full season.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Oh, you're such a school mom. He's back.
- 14:23Speaker 2: He's back.
- 14:23Speaker 1: All's right with the world.
