Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So corner Tan Ti Haha says the system is broken
- 0:04Speaker 1: after probing the suicides of six young people, These young
- 0:07Speaker 1: people that she looked at age between twelve and seventeen. Now,
- 0:12Speaker 1: some of these children, some of these young people had
- 0:14Speaker 1: contact with up to seventeen agencies, and yet still fell
- 0:18Speaker 1: through the gaps and the coroner's messages blunt, streamline care
- 0:23Speaker 1: or this will keep happening. My work. Psychologist Sarah Chatwin
- 0:27Speaker 1: is with me this morning. Good morning to you, Sarah. Sorry, Sarah,
- 0:31Speaker 1: my mouse is not working. I'll use my finger. No,
- 0:34Speaker 1: that doesn't work either. Ah, there we go, got you on,
- 0:38Speaker 1: I got it. I've got a sticky mouse, So there
- 0:41Speaker 1: we go.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Oh dear, we don't want one of those this early in.
- 0:44Speaker 1: The morning, Sarah. How on earth does this happen? How
- 0:48Speaker 1: do so many children slip through cracks?
- 0:51Speaker 2: That was a particularly hard rate, and you know, it's
- 0:55Speaker 2: hard to not be Yet another voice suggesting that the
- 0:59Speaker 2: needs of the and are not being met by an
- 1:02Speaker 2: enormous amount of services and groups that don't seem to
- 1:06Speaker 2: be interfacing, sharing information, you know, picking up on the need,
- 1:12Speaker 2: picking up on those kids who are presenting in a
- 1:15Speaker 2: way that must be you know somewhat clear in these situations.
- 1:20Speaker 2: So you know, it's just hard not to sound like
- 1:23Speaker 2: another person who says the continuity of care when dealing
- 1:26Speaker 2: with these kids going through these issues is just wow,
- 1:32Speaker 2: it ain't there, right, No.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Well, with so many agencies seventeen some had contact with seventeen,
- 1:39Speaker 1: you have to wonder whether the left hand knows what
- 1:41Speaker 1: the right hand is doing, and whether the right hand
- 1:43Speaker 1: is actually just presuming and assuming that the left hand
- 1:46Speaker 1: is doing all the work and when it isn't happening.
- 1:49Speaker 2: And even if that isn't the case, and it clearly
- 1:53Speaker 2: looks to be that because there is no continuity of care,
- 1:56Speaker 2: because the conversation, the transparency between agencies, I mean, it
- 2:01Speaker 2: just can't exist or in a form that's workable. You
- 2:06Speaker 2: think to yourself, wow, we can understand the coroner's suggestion,
- 2:12Speaker 2: you know, about providing a single coordinated care pathway. Yes,
- 2:17Speaker 2: that sounds tremendous. Then of course we go to the
- 2:21Speaker 2: fact of, okay, how do we do that? So we
- 2:23Speaker 2: have all these agencies up to seventeen and the kids
- 2:26Speaker 2: that were highlighted in this article were I think six,
- 2:31Speaker 2: you know, they had been through they had seen thirteen agencies,
- 2:34Speaker 2: seventeen agencies they had experienced, you know, a raft of situations, bullying,
- 2:40Speaker 2: domestic violence, you know, disconnection with far no family parents.
- 2:47Speaker 2: The symptoms were very very similar in most cases, and
- 2:51Speaker 2: they had been in front of these agencies, but for
- 2:56Speaker 2: whatever reason, whether it was the lack of transparency, agency
- 3:00Speaker 2: picked it up but didn't transmit to another agency when
- 3:03Speaker 2: they lost the child because clearly the child wasn't seeing
- 3:06Speaker 2: them all at the same time, there weren't any of
- 3:09Speaker 2: those markers, any of will, any people putting their hands
- 3:12Speaker 2: up and saying, hey, we are seeing this person now
- 3:15Speaker 2: and then and ongoing. So clearly something has to be
- 3:20Speaker 2: more focused with regard to this particular person, with regard
- 3:24Speaker 2: to that particular person. But it's just not happening being
- 3:28Speaker 2: identified or being followed through with.
- 3:31Speaker 1: If they create a single coordinated care pathway, it's still
- 3:34Speaker 1: going to be the same people that start it, and
- 3:36Speaker 1: they've just been amalgamated into one unit.
- 3:39Speaker 2: So well, I think the key is that that doesn't happen.
- 3:43Speaker 2: The key is that if you are providing a single
- 3:46Speaker 2: coordinative care pathway, you clearly have to change the people up.
- 3:51Speaker 2: You clearly have to put people in place that have,
- 3:54Speaker 2: you know, communication skills, the ability to be transparent, the
- 3:58Speaker 2: willingness to deal with these issues, not just have thinking
- 4:02Speaker 2: groups and focus groups and documentation that proves that we
- 4:07Speaker 2: have this problem. Oh yes, in New Zealand, we clearly
- 4:11Speaker 2: have this problem. We are being viewed by other countries
- 4:14Speaker 2: as a country with a huge problem with regard to
- 4:17Speaker 2: teen suicide rates. So I think you're right. It can't
- 4:22Speaker 2: be an amalgamation. A single pathway that the coroner suggests
- 4:26Speaker 2: cannot be just an amalgamation of what we're going on
- 4:30Speaker 2: with at the moment with the same people, because clearly
- 4:32Speaker 2: this isn't working, and the people who are in this system,
- 4:36Speaker 2: there may be some who don't work. So it has
- 4:39Speaker 2: to be changed up and looked at. This will take
- 4:42Speaker 2: time and this will take resources.
- 4:44Speaker 1: All right, Sarah Chah, I thank you. Yes, attending a
- 4:46Speaker 1: meeting in a room is not actually helping a kid
- 4:48Speaker 1: in any way, shape or form. James Murray twelve, Maya
- 4:52Speaker 1: Marshall fourteen, Harmawara elis Araje seventeen, Marty Leffen, Romanoli fifteen,
- 4:57Speaker 1: Summer Mills, Mecca fifteen at Harbor you hit at sixteen
- 5:03Speaker 1: on behalf of those responsible. We're so sorry for your family.
