- 1:38SPEAKER_00: So connections are one of the biggest keys, I believe, to unstoppable success.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: So welcome to the podcast, Zelda.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Thank you for having me.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: I'm excited to be here today.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm so excited.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Um, so little note, listeners, I was on Zelda's podcast and we just she is just absolutely phenomenal, great energy.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: So, Zelda, connections.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, it is your like it is like through and through, you know, as you just shared beforehand, you were at a networking event.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: So tell our listeners why it's so important.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Well, without it, you got nothing in business.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: So you it's those connections that get you the referrals, they get you um, you know, they get you your business, they fuel your success.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: It's like this person you might connect with who can connect you to the next person and the next person, and you you just never know where it's going to lead.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: So connections are, but not just fake, you have to have really deep, authentic connections that lead to building a relationship.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Otherwise, the connection is nothing.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Yep, it is so true.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna get back to that.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: So, how did you come to this and arrive at this?
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Like, not, you know, it is a it's a great thing to know, and people know, but but you live and breathe it.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: So, how did you get here?
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: So many years ago, I guess it was maybe 16 years ago, I had sold our company's business.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: It was a hundred-year-old produce company, and I was looking for something else to do.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: And I thought, what am I gonna do?
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: And my sister said, Zelda, you have so many connections.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: You need to get into real estate because you know everybody.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: I was involved with the chamber, with the women business owners, with so many outside sources.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: I knew so many people.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: She said, You've got to do this, you'll be so successful at it.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: And so that was really my aha moment.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: I was like, Yeah, well, you know, I know all these people.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: What am I gonna do to make a living and knowing how I'm gonna use connections to get ahead in life?
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: So that's how it really started.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Well, that's so I so that's really important and and so pivotal because you know, connections are what help you move forward because you know somebody.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: And it doesn't necessarily mean that they're the person that you're going to do business with.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: Happens all the time.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: It's like you think you know, you're in you're in a networking situation and you know somebody, you go, well, when are they going to give me some business?
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: And it doesn't work that way.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: It's they're not gonna be the one, but they might refer you to someone who they refer you to someone you just never know.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: And it may not happen today, it might happen years down the road.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: And that is pivotal.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right?
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: So years down the road.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: So talk about how you make meaningful, authentic connections.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: So for me, it's a process.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: I have a system that I use.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: And first you you you meet them and uh you get their cards, but what do you do with those cards?
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: They're like they're you know, I always joke with people and I say when I'm out doing a keynote, I say you've gathered all the yes, yes, exactly.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: You've gathered all those, and now they'll never see the light of day again.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: So, what do you do with those cards?
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: That's what's important.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: It's what you do with those business cards, what you do after you've met these people.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: It's that's when you start the follow-up.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: It's the follow-up is how you get the relationship going.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: The follow-up is how you get things moving.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: And so I do several things.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: It depends.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: If I'm wearing my real estate hat, I'll do one thing.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: If I'm wearing my um keynote speaking or podcasting, I'm gonna wear it, I'm gonna do a little different.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: But it's really the same.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: It's what you do with those cards.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: And what I like to tell my clients to do is to take those cards, first of all, put them in your database.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Now, the worst thing is when you get a millennial, I love millennials, I have two of my own, is when they say, Oh, I don't have a card.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: So they want, no, they have the the here's my phone.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Well, you know what?
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: If you put it in someone's phone, they're never, they're not gonna remember your name because they've met so many people.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: So my son was guilty of this for a while.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Now he has a business card.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: But you take those business cards, take them out of the cup holder from your car, get them into the house, put them into a CRM.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: I don't care if it's an Excel spreadsheet.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Excel spreadsheets have been wonderful for me over the years.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: So do that, and then here's where here's where it happens.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: You have to do something with it now.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: You've put them in your database.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: What are you gonna do?
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: It's the follow-up.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: So you nurture it.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: So you can start with sending them an email if they're a baby boomer.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: You know, those millennials don't want an email, but you can text them and they'll look at that text.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: So I'll text them.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, another those are those are just two things that I do.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: I will iPhones are the best.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: They take video.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: You can hi, I just met you this afternoon.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: It was great talking to you.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: I'd love to learn more about you and what you how I can help you.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Text them a video, send.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: Simple.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: That's how you start.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: That's what I do.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Okay, so now here's a question, okay, because nurturing is nurturing the relationship, I think, is really important.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: I love the idea with the video.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: I'm so in line with you when it comes to not having a business card.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: I I mean, I I I I tend to take these and I will mark them.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: I try to, you know, put little notes on them.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Um, there's there's certain things that we do with them.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: But people, I love digital cards, can be amazing, but at the same time, you need something to be able to remember you by.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Um and if you're gonna do a digital card, you actually have what I say to people the digital card may be great, but if you don't message that person within seconds of getting that digital card, they are lost in your phone forever.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: That's correct.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: That's that is correct.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: And when you speak of cards, I like to tell people that cards are real estate.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: So if you're not using the back and the front, you're missing an opportunity.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: So you it's real estate, man.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: You want to use up every room in the house.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: So use up all your space, even if you just have a little space at the bottom that says notes so that you can put those little notes.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: I remember this person because of whatever it was that they did, you know.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: But it's real estate.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: It is, it is real estate.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: So, okay, so you you do you you send them an email, you send them a text.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: I like doing both.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: I'm all about the two steps.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Um then what?
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: I like to try to set up a coffee, and coffee can be a virtual coffee.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: It at you know, if that's what they want to start with, it can be a virtual coffee.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Yes, ma'am.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Yes, I got my coffee.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: And then it can go from there, you go, hey, let's have lunch.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: And I like to do something a little different even.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Um, and when I'm speaking, I talk about this.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Um, it's called create your own event.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: I do something that I called let's do lunch.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: And so every other month I will gather, I'll invite usually 20 to 30 people because you know they're not gonna all show up and say, Hey, let's all get together at the XYZ restaurant and I'll make a reservation and I'll go put your reservation in there.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: You order off the menu, and so it's all Dutch, and everybody gets together and they get to know each other.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: And the last time I did this was so phenomenal.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: So I did this, Joclyn, and I had a group, it was a small group of maybe six women.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: Some of them knew each other, some of them didn't.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: There was just a handful of us.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: And one of them said, you know, I came because hey, you called a meeting, uh lunch, and I'm coming because I figured you have something, you know, you you need to share.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: And she said, This was really cool because it wasn't about that at all.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: There was no business discussion.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: We talked about all of us, we talked about children, we talked about pets, we talked about life, and it was just you get to know people.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: That's how you form a connection.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: It's not about I'm selling widgets, it's about, hey, this is me.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: That's how you get to learn to love, like, and trust somebody is you get to know the authentic person.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Create your own events, create your events.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: I I like creating, I like that creating your own events.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Okay, so you create an event and you're nurturing this.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: So walk us through the process of, let's say, somebody who uh you you met at an event and and you ended up like the process of them becoming either a client or a partner.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: And the reason why I want you to walk them through this because it's our first of all, it's we always have to remember, and I tell my clients this all the time, it's your business, right?
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: You're the one that has to do the follow-up, it's not theirs.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: But but the follow-up is important.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: And so I I'd love to hear like how you take some, how you take them yourself through that with people from start to to to through the process.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: I totally understand.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: So I can give you an example of a really bad one that happened to me and a really good one.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: So the bad one was I went to a new event.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, I was invited to this event.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: This guy says, Hey, this organization's been going on.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: We'd love to have you come and join us.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: 90 people show up.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: It was phenomenal.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: Um, and I will tell you one tip is stay late.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: That's when you can really network, not at the beginning, at the end.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: So this fellow comes up to me, he's uh in finance.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: Okay, and we we, you know, I ask him all the questions, everything's going great.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: And I send him my follow-up text message afterwards within 24 hours.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: And he about two days later, he sends me his um email.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: And it was so obvious that he uh either didn't remember me or didn't care because it was such it was so obvious that the text message he sent me, or it was an email, was a standard email talking about things that he enjoyed talking to me about, which we never discussed.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: It never came up.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: So be genuine, be real.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: People know, people aren't stupid.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: So that's a bad example.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: You know, if you're if you didn't really make a good connection with the person, then don't.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: Just don't do that.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, who does that?
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: So, well, this guy didn't.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: But here's a good example.
- 12:27unknown: Okay.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: So I attended, uh I actually facilitated this lunch, a different luncheon for about eight years.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: And in the past three or four, uh, the wait staff, this waitress, um, we'll call her Kelsey because that's her name.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: And and I nerd, I I got to know her on a more personal level.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: And I she told me, hey, we're gonna be moving in a a couple of years or a year.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure when, but I'd like for you to be my realtor.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: I said, great.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: And then all through the next couple of years, she would ask me questions.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: I would I only saw her maybe once a month, but I would talk to her on the phone every now and then and give her advice.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: There was, I whether it happened or not, I didn't know, but I was happy to share, happy to give her tips, happy to give her value.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: So that's part of the nurturing.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: It's like, will something happen?
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: I didn't know because sometimes nothing happens, but I nurtured it and finally she was ready to sell a couple of years later and she called me, and that's how that transaction happened because, you know, I took my time with her.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: I wasn't pushy, I wasn't trying to sell her anything.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: I was just giving her advice the whole time.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And I think that is the quintessential, you know, you you may have I think there's two things here too, I that I also kind of want to I want to ask about.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's you need to nurture the people that that you have, and you need to kind of like pop in and say hello and say, hey, expensive a little bit, or whatever it is, like put put people on a sequence of a phone call text, you know, video to get in that process because it will happen.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: But here's the thing that I guess I want to ask you because as you're going around and you're collecting, you know, we've got thousands of business cards, um, they go into your CRM.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: You know, how do you, you know, how do you make it so that like you know who you're gonna reach out to?
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: So I have I've put people in categories.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: You have an A category, I even have an A plus.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: Those are the ones who are my customers.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: Not only are they my customers, they have already referred me to people.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: That's my A plus.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: So they're gonna get everything I'm offering.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: It's like they're gonna get my direct mail, they're gonna get my email, they're gonna get everything, they're gonna get all my invitations because I throw like to throw events, so I will invite them.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: They get everything.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: Then you have your A.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: Maybe they've bought from me, but they haven't referred.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Then you have your B.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: They would, but you got to make sure you stay in front of them.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: C, mm, D means you should delete them, but I usually don't because this just depends.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: So I basically do that.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: And the trick with that is you have to constantly be refreshing that.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: It's not like they they landed on the B list and they stay in the B list or they're in the A and they can go up and they can go down.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: So I rate them.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: And they well, I'm looking at it right now.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: Here's an I like to say, Jacqueline, that people, if everybody else is zigging, you should be zagging.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: When they start zagging, you start zigging.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: So direct mail, it will go out.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Now I've gotten very niche about who gets my mail because it's gotten expensive.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: You know, not just the postage, but the envelopes cost money, the product that's going in it costs money.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: So the A plus are gonna get it.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: And probably the A's, but the B's probably not.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Whereas before I did probably do the B's.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: And see, so I I give I believe in direct mail to a point.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, up to a point.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I love that.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: You know, direct mail is so important.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: And I will, I'm gonna share this.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Um, I don't know, listeners, if you know this, but I my first part of my life, I actually was uh in consumer marketing for large publications, and I did direct mail.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, my budgets were huge.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: I used to kid around and tell everybody that when they would say to me, What do you do for a living?
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: I say, I kill trees because I did so much direct mail.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: I get it.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: I'm a tree killer.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: I'm just kidding.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: I actually really want us to bring back the killing of trees and start bringing back paper mills, but that's a whole other topic.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Um, not gonna get political honest.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: But I will tell you, folks, like direct mail is so important.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: Now there are a and I will share this.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't know if you use send out cards or mailbox power, but there are companies out there like those two, and I can put links to those in there.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: They're really great, but that hand, that hand written personal note, and I'm gonna grab this because it's what's sitting on my desk.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: I got cards, a stack, a deck of cards, right?
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: Yep, and these I bought because they were colorful.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, here comes Bob's um up my back driveway.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: Um, but um, but I'm just looking at them, but uh yeah, so listeners, I was I'm sharing this because I'm getting a delivery for a bit and we're gonna pause for a minute in a second, not just yet.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: But um cards matter, and when people like I can't begin to tell you how special that is to get something in the mail, and people do open it, whether it's a personal note or an actual piece of of a direct mail piece that basically is something that you can see to somebody.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, I you know, I I was actually sharing this the other day.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: I thought it was, I almost was um, you know, I I'm I'm angry actually that our business cards, most people, these two actually happen to, but there's so this is a bad example.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: But I will take um, for example, this guy.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: He has a business card, but it doesn't have his um, it does not have his mailing address on it.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: All right, I'm gonna put us on pause.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: All right, so we took a small little break.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Um, as I shared, I'm getting some furniture delivered, and they of course they had to come right at the time that we're doing the season.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: So anyway, so we were talking about notes.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: I can share a little.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: So not only do I regularly send out notes, and my A, B, and C people will get a note.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: I don't I used to do them every month, and now I don't.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: I do them maybe every quarter, but something else you can do that I do every month, and again, this isn't for everybody.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: I just I pick and choose, but at the beginning of the month, I send out birthday cards, and um, I'll usually put in, you can get them on Amazon a little pop-up card inside of it, you know, those little things that give you a little message.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: So I'll do that.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: And I always hope that it makes them feel really special and feel warm.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: I was always hopeful, and I'll share a little story.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: So I went to a Fourth of July party this year, and there was a woman there that I know not real well, but I know her well enough.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: And I guess we were just hanging out, and so we sat down, we start talking about all kinds of things that had no great importance of anything.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: Like I said, you get to know people on an authentic, genuine level.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: So we're talking, and about a week later, I receive in the mail a card from her.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: Uh, just I call them just because, and it talked a little bit about what we talked about and all that.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: And it, I thought, oh my gosh, this feels so good that that is the feeling that I'm hoping the the people who receive my cards get because I mean it that way.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: It's a genuine uh friendship, it's a genuine relationship.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: I'm not a transactional person in real estate, in anything.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: It's I don't want to be, you just did we just exchanged whatever we were exchanging and we're done.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: I like it for the long term to build that relationship.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: That's so great.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, all right.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: So here's my question.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: How do you get people's birthdays?
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's so easy.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: There's two ways.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: One is you can look on Facebook.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Facebook gives you them.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: And the second one, ask them.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: Just ask them, hey, by the way, what's your birthday?
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: I go, I don't want your year, but I just want your and in real estate when you do a transaction, they have to give you um a driver's license when you go to the closing.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: So I'll ask the closing title company, can you tell me what their birth month and day is?
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: And then I put it down.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: And at the beginning of, or rather the end of the month, I look at the next month and I go, okay, who's having a birthday?
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: And I just start addressing my letters.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: In fact, it reminded me when we were talking, oh, I have a stack that I'm supposed to send out yesterday was the 10th, and it's the 11th.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: So they'll go in the mail after this podcast.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: So you know what?
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: But that's actually a really interesting thing to see that too as um when you when you're at a networking event, why not say to somebody, grab your have a pen and say, Oh, you exchange cards?
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: Hey, by the way, your birthday and they might be like why and I go well you know what I drop cards in the mail because I like to achieve that's exactly what I say I drop I I mail things and they go oh I I send people stuff yeah and I you could say I don't know and you could just write down their birthday right there on their card and just write like you know whatever make sure you don't even say because I send birthday cards out right because I send because I like to send birthday birthday cards right and you can say like I'm a sucker for birthdays I like to celebrate people's birthday you don't might not want to celebrate your birthday but I want to celebrate it and make the envelope fun like here's a sticker I got happy mail I stick that on the envelope who doesn't want to open up something that says happy mail right that's awesome make it fun make it fun I really really love that you know Zelda you know making connections is so important and and I will share and I I I want to remind people too that it's not about it's not about you meeting somebody so that you can get a sale correct that's correct in that right and so so when you're networking what do you teach people like how do you teach people to network like what are the things that you kind of walk them through because I think some people you know you walk into a networking event and I and I will say to people all the time like don't just say hey I'm with so and such a thing like so here's what I tell people to do and I actually wrote a course Jacqueline called the ultimate networking playbook it's available on my website you can get it it's a course it's a great course if I say so myself so I'll tell you one of the things that are in it just like what you were asking is when you go to an event a networking event it's a strategy.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: You don't just walk in willy-nilly have a strategy know who the speaker is know who maybe some of the people are that are going to be attending who is it one or two people that's it that's all you need is one or two that you really want to get to know then be a troll go on LinkedIn and check them out go on their Facebook page if you can and check them out learn go to their their websites learn something about them okay and figure out a couple of questions that you can ask them.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: I mean you can go in there and say what do you do but that's so ordinary so I would say ask them some questions about what it is that they do.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: You could even say hey what brought you here today do have you heard this speaker before things like that.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: You can do all kinds of things you know an interesting little pen to get people's attention if you're an introvert to go oh that's really cool that's an icebreaker that's very true.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: I like that and actually it's and I've always shared the tip with people that when you number one is they're gonna give you a name tag but have your own absolutely like and get one that's big enough I wish I had mine here to show you like that's big enough like so that you can read it and I'll and I'm gonna share I ordered when I first got my first set of um I was it business cards name tags I ordered a couple because I inevitably will like leave them in different places so I can have them yep absolutely and I thought they were going to be big and they were these tiny little things.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: I'm like oh I can't even read it.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: I hate it when people have these little bitty tags and you have to go looking up close as I don't want to do that to somebody.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: And I always say put it on your right side so that when I shake your hand oh that you know it's like I'm not looking at the other side of you.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: I'm looking directly at you and you can see it.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: So right side yes and it's when you shake your hand absolutely mine has my name so big that you can see it across the room and if you have a unique name like mine is kind of unique I only have my first name I don't even put my last name on it because the name is Zelda that alone will get attention.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: But if you don't regard your first name large enough where we don't have to come up and get a magnifying glass to read it.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: Oh that's so annoying.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: That's like yeah and and but have your own name tag like if you want if you're in business invest in your own name tag and if you want right to me you know if you don't want to put the name of your company on it because maybe you work for a corporation you're not your you're you're not maybe an entrepreneur you don't have your own company just have your own name and you could say your first name big and your last name smaller underneath it you know have some type of a I always say it's really great to have a personal branding logo that you that that you can have for yourself that people can recognize you with because each and every one of us is a personal brand.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: So brand yours brand yourself and I when I say brand I don't mean like you know with iron but um but put a logo or have something that's that people can remember and have your like again have your own name tag and make sure that it is readable I've seen some where it's like tone on tone and I'm like it looks kind of cool but I can barely see it right but I can't read it yeah yeah exactly think of it like can my can my baby boomer parent or grandparent or whoever can they read it right right so so you know I was saying before about the and you just shared this and I think it's really important listeners you need to walk in with a strategy and not every networking event is the same strategy.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: Correct right so how do you help people figure out the strategy for the networking event well for me it's uh usually when I'm talking to a group of people it's somebody who's on a sales team they're in sales that's my niche is they're in sales whether they're another realtor I'll talk to realtors um different realtors and they're looking for referrals okay so they're they're looking that's sales I mean everybody's in sales let's face it you're in sales uh so it's how do you get to know it's the same thing for everyone in my opinion it's how do you get to know them you're not gonna get hit the ball out of the park on the first go round the strategy is always get to know them what do they want what do they need it is not about you just like when you when you LinkedIn is a great example uh you go on LinkedIn and somebody wants to friend you and you say okay and the next thing you know they're giving you their sales pitch.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah I agree with the pitch work it happens all the time happens all the time well it happens at networking events too here's and they're just talking and talking and talking so if you're an extrovert I implore you to not do all the talking to sit back and give that introvert a time a chance to talk to learn about them and I'm always leading with you know who who is a good referral for you um what what is it that you're hoping to get out of this meeting how can I help you it's like what can you do I you know Bob Berg was on my uh show a couple of weeks ago and he wrote a co-authored the go giver and it's really about serving people giving to people what can you yeah in his book I remember there was a story about it was at the very beginning about I hope I can get this right the fire you want to have a fire well you can't have the fire until you give it some logs you have to go out and get the logs before you can get you know so it's a everything is a process and you have to give the fire some logs before it can have be a fire.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: You have to go out there and give people what they want before you're gonna get what you want.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: And the other key thing about that too is that in order to keep that fire sustained and going and growing you have to actually nurture the fire.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: Absolutely you absolutely have to and that is strategy.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah and that's really great and by the way Bob Berg is absolutely fantastic.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: I he was a guest on our um on this podcast as well and he's so fantastic if you have not listened listened because I listen to books if you've not read or listened to um any of his books like after this episode I'm gonna put a link in there but go and get his the Go giver go get the book go givers it's really great.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: So Zelda if you could give somebody one tip or two on making deeper connections that you you know if you could wave your magic wand that you wish everybody would do what would it be?
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: Wow never thought about that one great question really it's it's truly about listening um and understanding that I mean this world is so different now.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: You've got AI you've got online groups you've got in-person groups so go to both of them online and in person events and listen listen more than you talk because you'll learn more that way and really and truly offer to give more value than you're receiving when you're first starting just be the giver and it will come back to you in many ways.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: And yeah it's so true.
