- 0:06Hello dear listeners, this is the dulcet will self SAT voice
- 0:12of Paul Quinn who you may recognise from various Hamster
- 0:16podcasts. It was I who poured score on the
- 0:18resurrection of the Dialects and I who defended Orphan 55, and I
- 0:23who brought in all those tedious literary references to Ghost
- 0:26Light. And I'm here with Go Forward of
- 0:30course the Father of Hamster to introduce our new insane
- 0:35project, Hamster. Doctor Who creatives join Joe
- 0:40and I as we go through every story of Classic Who and every
- 0:46story of New Who. Looking at the creators who
- 0:49produced those stories, the producers, the directors, the
- 0:54script writers, the actors playing the Doctor, the actors
- 0:57playing the companions and some wild cards.
- 0:59Those actors who turn up in three or more stories.
- 1:02And it won't just be the episodes that they appear in
- 1:05that we talk about. We're looking at their wider
- 1:08corpus of work. So the Barry Let's story is
- 1:10going to be a three hour epic and the Paula Mall will be four
- 1:15or five hours and won't be lucky if when you join us for that
- 1:18one. I'm joined here by Joe for the
- 1:21big FA Cup style draw to see what we're going to be talking
- 1:25about next month. Hello, hello.
- 1:28To give this a bit of context, Paul is currently holding a is
- 1:32it Doctor Who experience? Yes, Sack full of.
- 1:36This is how high tech we are. It's full of pieces of paper,
- 1:39which we're going to select out each time.
- 1:42And I'm assuming we're going to put at the end of each episode
- 1:45where we're going next. So we'll do A tag, yeah.
- 1:49A really long wheeled, long long winded FA Cup draw.
- 1:54A really interesting way, a new way of looking at Doctor Who via
- 1:59the creatives. And it's going to give us a
- 2:01chance to look at their work, obviously on Doctor Who, but
- 2:05some of their work outside Doctor Who and just give it a
- 2:09bit of context. So come on, I'm excited.
- 2:12Let's put the first name out. Put my hand in my sack.
- 2:16Some of you will be thinking in terms of Alan Partridge where he
- 2:19lists a lot of police detective programs from regional locations
- 2:23and Tony has the hated head of BBC says Means.
- 2:26We don't need any more TV detectives.
- 2:29You might be thinking that about Doctor Who podcasting, but you'd
- 2:31be wrong here. That's the first name I've drawn
- 2:35out of my sack. If I can find something, he's
- 2:39got to. It's John Hurt.
- 2:45No. My God, John Hurt.
- 2:49Well, how many movies can I watch in the next two weeks?
- 2:52Do we need another name to go along with the War Doctor?
- 2:56The one. Or shall we just go John?
- 3:00I mean, John Hurt's had a long and prestigious career.
- 3:03There's certainly an episode in John Hurt.
- 3:06So are we going with John Hurt the War Doctor for the first
- 3:08episode of Hamster? Because I've also heard his Big
- 3:13Finish audios as well. So that's that's an hour
- 3:17straight away and we can talk about the curious case of three
- 3:20Doctor Who actors playing Winston Smith in adaptations of
- 3:231984. And it's sort of leaning into
- 3:26what you were talking about the other day when you said, you
- 3:29know, John, her, Peter Cushing, the, the sort of the most widely
- 3:32respected actors that have taken a a few rare turns of playing
- 3:36the Doctor. And this was such a coup for
- 3:39Moffett. I mean, I think, I think there's
- 3:43an hour a day of the Doctor alone, but absolutely there's a
- 3:47lot of John Hurt's career. I haven't, I haven't explored as
- 3:50well. He's a marvellous actor.
- 3:52He's a genuine loss. I mean, I have an unfortunate
- 3:56voice which sounds like I'm taking the piss.
- 3:57So you've had to essentially explain the whole concept again
- 4:01because it is like Henry's Cat came in to talk to people.
- 4:03But John Hill is the most marvelous actor and and yeah,
- 4:07from across his range of stuff here.
- 4:09Alien The Elephant Man 1984 Champions Control in the film
- 4:17adaptation of Ticker Taylor Soldiers by he's a genuine
- 4:20genuine loss. The only time I kind of thought
- 4:23he was a bit off was when he kind of got very annoyed on who
- 4:26do you think you are When he discovered he wasn't actually
- 4:28Irish though I've got a weird connection to that because
- 4:32that's Westport which is where a lot of my family lives.
- 4:33So I know that building very well so.
- 4:36Well I think you are because I think you're far more away of
- 4:38his career now. You give me 5 things to watch
- 4:42like non Doctor Who thing so we can talk about.
- 4:44Well we'll do it off camera, don't worry.
- 4:46And then we'll do a bit of research.
- 4:48We're we're going to be coming up with our first episode in the
- 4:51next couple of weeks, So in about two weeks time, that'll be
- 4:54coming out. And this is a very exciting
- 4:58idea. And it's doubly exciting because
- 5:01Paul, as I've recently said on Sy Hart's Journal of Impossible
- 5:07Things, like Library of Impossible Things.
- 5:09Sorry, Paul was my oldest friend.
- 5:12I've known him since I was about four years old.
- 5:13He's the man who introduced me to Doctor Who.
- 5:16We went our our own paths for a long old time and This Is Us
- 5:19coming back together. And finally the great work
- 5:23begins. We do this all the way through.
- 5:27It's at least 300 episodes. We will be very old men.
- 5:31It will be like history today on the Mary Whitehouse experience
- 5:36sketch, but with actually intelligent conversation, not
- 5:38just stuff about that your mum. That is because that can't be
- 5:41the case for either of us tragically canning, and that's
- 5:43gone in a very dark direction very quickly.
- 5:46I've I've already turned out nearly 700 episodes of how to
- 5:49start. I'm sure we can do 300.
- 5:53So John Hurt. Coming.
- 5:55John Hurt. Five in the next couple of
- 5:58weeks. Yeah, I can't wait.
- 6:00Looking forward to it. That's such a good draw because
- 6:02I was terrified it's going to be something.
- 6:05Leslie Scott. I mean, big up to Norman Stone
- 6:09because he has to deal with two of the worst stories to film and
- 6:12I love Underworld, but that was a real, you know, he wasn't even
- 6:15a proper director. You're talking about Norman
- 6:17Stewart there, aren't you? Norman Stewart?
- 6:19Not Norman Stewart. An actor, isn't he?
- 6:20I am Norman Stewart. Oh, he's going off to a great
- 6:22start, isn't he? And.
- 6:24This is the exact factual accuracy you didn't have to
- 6:27expect. No, actually I've quite the
- 6:30reverse because I know, I know that you will bring your typical
- 6:34smarts to this. Norman Stone.
- 6:38He's he's in the Silurians, isn't he?
- 6:41He's Colonel Baker. Oh, that's Norman Jones.
- 6:43Oh well, who's Norman story for today?
- 6:47Yes, answers on a postcard, please, to whoever Norman Stone
- 6:50is. Please let us know who Norman
- 6:52Stone is and join us in two. Weeks.
- 6:55Are you there, Norman? It's John Hart with you.
- 7:00For our first episode covering John Hurt.
