- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Fun Francis.
- 0:03SPEAKER_05: Hello, and welcome to Tebo Sports Podcast 19.
- 0:09SPEAKER_05: One fanball game.
- 0:11SPEAKER_05: Thursday night football between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks.
- 0:18SPEAKER_05: We will get to that momentarily.
- 0:20SPEAKER_05: Well, the Avalanche played their second, their first back-to-back, home and home, against the Dallas Stars.
- 0:26SPEAKER_05: They beat Dallas in Dallas 3-2 and unfortunately lost last night in Denver.
- 0:35SPEAKER_05: 3-2 in a shootout.
- 0:37SPEAKER_05: Two goals back to back were taken away from the abs.
- 0:40SPEAKER_05: One was a kicking motion, which was the first goal of the game, and then the other one was offsides.
- 0:47SPEAKER_05: And you know, both calls were obviously probably the right call.
- 0:52SPEAKER_05: But disappointing to to have to sit there and go up one-nothing and then have the video the people in Montreal in Montreal come back and and disallow the goal.
- 1:06SPEAKER_05: And then you know, go up again one-nothing and then and disallow the goal.
- 1:10SPEAKER_05: They did play from behind, they were able to tie it late in the third period and then come back and win.
- 1:17SPEAKER_05: And and then go into a shootout.
- 1:20SPEAKER_05: You know, like I said earlier, and like I said yesterday, the the these games are so important in especially early in the season, because they are divisional games, they are games where you you do play you know somebody in your division and and you know they're they're four point eight-point games to where you can, you know, really decide whether or not you're going to be able to who's gonna be in that division.
- 1:53SPEAKER_05: You know, the division they have are in this year, you know, and and and it's always the same, you know, as is super hard and you know, super, super tough.
- 2:03SPEAKER_05: But you know, to to lose the back-to-back game like that, especially coming back home, is is is uh is is difficult.
- 2:12SPEAKER_05: But you know, when Lannon Scogg was able to get you know the goal in the second period at the four fifty-five mark, you know, take the lead, and then Dallas was able to score early on in the in the first period.
- 2:27SPEAKER_05: At the fifteen oh three mark in the first period in the second period and and go up one-nothing.
- 2:33SPEAKER_05: Third period, you know, the abs at the one oh at the one oh two mark early in the beginning of the third period, you know, Dallas was able to go up again, Nelson was able to tie it at the 821 mark in the second in the third period, and then you know, the shootout, you know.
- 2:50SPEAKER_05: Natus missed, you know, the the the stars missed, Condri made his goal, Jacushin missed, or McKinnon missed, and then Nelson missed.
- 3:00SPEAKER_05: And it's just, you know, it w it was a good game from from what I understand, but you know, hard, hard to lose at home, and especially in a in a back-to-back situation like that.
- 3:17SPEAKER_05: But when when you you know, and and it's early, and you know, the abs are you know they're still in there and they're they're still fighting for you know what what I think is is they could win the division, but you know, when when you play you know a division by well, especially in a back-to-back, it's it's never one of the it's never one of the easiest things in the world, you know, with the standings in the Western Conference for the Central for the for the Colorado Avalanche, you know, Utah Mammoth are seven five and two at ten points, the Winnipeg Jacks are six four, one and one at nine points, the Calor Avalanche are in third place at seven four-two and one at nine points, Minnesota is seven four, two, one and nine points.
- 4:08SPEAKER_05: St.
- 4:09SPEAKER_05: Louis is down near the bottom at six-three, two and one at seven points.
- 4:15SPEAKER_05: Dallas is a seven three, three and one at seven points.
- 4:18SPEAKER_05: Nasfield Predators are six-two, two and two at six points.
- 4:22SPEAKER_05: Chicago Blackhawks are seven, two, five, zero with four points.
- 4:27SPEAKER_05: You know, and it's early.
- 4:28SPEAKER_05: You you you look at some of these teams that you know typically play really, really well.
- 4:33SPEAKER_05: The Calgary Flames have you know two points.
- 4:38SPEAKER_05: And, you know, they are you know, they are six, one, five, and zero, and you know, they they don't have you know, they don't have any points.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: And it's just it's crazy to where you know, it's it's there and and the Aves are you know, are are just are right there, you know.
- 5:04SPEAKER_05: And they're they're playing well, but it's early in the season, so you know, that's it's a little bit longer season this year, 84 games instead of 82, but you know, it's it's gonna be an exciting season for for the Aves.
- 5:20SPEAKER_05: So, as I said at the beginning, Thursday night football in Denver.
- 5:26SPEAKER_05: The Seattle Seahawks will be playing the Denver Broncos here at home, Amazon Prime.
- 5:36SPEAKER_05: But, you know, let's let's hear from Sean Payton here, you know, what it's like to play on a short week and get ready for a short week.
- 5:43SPEAKER_05: And we'll discuss some other things that Bonic said.
- 5:47SPEAKER_05: You know, we'll see if the Broncos can can win this game.
- 5:49SPEAKER_05: You know, this is the third game that they've played in the AFC West.
- 5:52SPEAKER_05: They only have one more team, or NFC West, they only have one more team to play in the NFC West, which is the Arizona Cardinals, which they play after this Thursday, and a little mini 10-day bye.
- 6:02SPEAKER_05: Here we go.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: So obviously a different schedule this week.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: Today's our first day.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: We have two days really of work.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Any questions as you get into planning here?
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Like offensive, what is sort of the first thing if you want to see better than I think look, we've covered it, you know, the the the balance, the the attention to details, you know, all those things.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Uh we're playing a real good defense.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: You know, we've got to get ready for what they do defensively and yeah, in a short time frame.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: What are some of the things you have to do to compact things?
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: How do you compact short weeks?
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: Look, I I you know, a lot of times you get to stuff that you practiced a lot that applies to the opponent you're playing.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: And you know, a lot of it's walkthrough repetitions.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: I think all all the teams know a little bit more now compared to 20 years ago or 15 years ago, how to handle a a shorter week.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: And unfortunately we're playing it at home.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: Where of where do you see defensively?
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Where where's it start for that in terms of what they do?
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: Well, they're they're they're complete in in all three areas in in every statistical mark you look at.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: They've got a real good front.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: They're fantastic in their coverage fits.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: They defend the run well when they're you know in their seven and a half man fronts, you know, very well.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: You don't see plays get on top of them.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: They've got a real good pressure package, and you know Mike's done a real good job in a in a really a short period of time of putting together you know a a super talented defense.
- 7:47SPEAKER_04: What makes Jackson do that so good?
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well you see you feel great football IQ, and then you put that with great talent and hips, you know, he can really transition, and then he's a really, really good rack player, so you know, he's catching it cleanly with his feet on the ground.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, all all the above.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: Thursday can be uh a game where it seems performance is most unpredictable.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: Have you ever had a situation where like you thought you had no chance or gonna struggle and then Thursday comes and everything's clicking?
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: Look, the all the analytic studies that we do, you know, you know, playing well early on Thursdays is important.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Obviously a lot of it depends on the team you have and the team you're playing.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: You know, and I think just from my experience, you know, a lot of times or at least historically it's been a division opponent.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: Obviously, in this case it's not, but maybe an old division opponent if if you follow the game.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: But uh, I think in that quick turnaround, you know, being ready to play and rested, all all of those things I think play a big part in it.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: You sure with Coach McDonald Grace when that thing with the interview came out a couple weeks ago.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you and I are good.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: You talked to him before the game gave him a hard time because of Sean and like the competition.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, digging in people a little bit.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: No, it wasn't until afterwards.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: And I I I know John, but Mike and I visited and yeah, that that there's so many other things on your radar, you know, that he was getting ready to play a game, we were getting ready to play a game, and yeah, it's all good.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: Sean, y you guys have come from behind in all three of your wins in the fourth quarter.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: What was that say about the testament of a team and the end receiver?
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, I like the fact that there's that confidence that you're in a game and then you know, we talked at the onset of the season, I think you guys heard it from me that it'd be nice to play well earlier and and not constantly put ourselves in that position.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: But each week the opponent can vary, the game can unfold differently.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: And and so sometimes that happens where you're at halftime and you you would have never projected that score.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: You know last night you saw a first half and then you saw an entirely different second half.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: That's not that unusual, actually.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: Along those lines, you say every single game there's a way to win.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: But for this group, is their identity to really make it a dogfight and because they have confidence to talk about us or then uh you guys you have the confidence to make those lights in the fourth quarter is the identity to try to make it a dogfight to get to the fourth quarter.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean I I'd be silly to go through the the keys to winning this game you know, two days before we play it.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: You always prepare for a physical game, especially against a team that that just won the Super Bowl and and is talented up front.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: So there'll there'll be certain points of emphasis, things that we feel like will be really important and we'll kind of go from there.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: So there's play calling like riding a bike, or did you feel like maybe you gotta get some of those comments?
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Probably a little bit of both.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's some things that you gotta spit out quickly.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: Maybe just some subtle terminology changes and then Yeah, I I wish it was like riding a bike because uh my memories of riding bikes was always carefree.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: Relaxing.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: So I don't I don't I don't I wouldn't use that necessarily, but you you get you do get used to how fast everything goes, especially when you go from college to the NFL and and the clock is much quicker.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: You uh you've talked before about quarterbacks and you're fit, and sometimes the second or third stop with McDonald.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: What do you see that kind of works there for them and then how ease they want to improve it?
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: It's been impressive.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: You know, you get the right script, the right producer, the right actor, the right player, and we see it all the time in our league.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: You know, I brought it up as a compliment to prior games we played when you talk about Matt Stafford or you know, other players that found you know, McCaffrey in San Francisco.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, those are career changing turn of events.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: And in and for Sam, you know, all of a sudden you have to say career changing because he's a Super Bowl winning quarterback on a fantastic team.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: His confidence is entirely different with where he's going, he's decisive.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: Nothing surprises you, like, you know, in our league.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: It's it's happened, you know, when Trent Green got hurt and Kurt Warner was thrust into a lineup.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: Like it kind of repeats itself sometimes.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: If I asked Bo today about taking risks or playing loss or is that kind of comical to you or no?
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: No, I mean I think listen, he and I talk about it and and I read you know his quote his quotes the other day.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: There is this look, uh part of what we're trying to do is find him these throws where man, like there's gonna be times where you know he's gonna have to make a play that that may be covered pretty well, but he he scrambles and finds a throw.
- 13:32SPEAKER_02: We're always trying to find those uh those plays that that are clean, that kind of unfold versus the coverage you want.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: But to answer your question, uh you know, a lot of it's you're really paying attention to the game you're into, you know, relative to risk.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: And I think that that's something that I think his experience uh certainly at Oregon has helped him, and then you know, it's it's bumpy.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, we're we're constantly grinding to calm to calm it down and and and create some matchups and some call it first or second in the progression throws that that make it less risky.
- 14:20SPEAKER_02: And but there's a time though, in and look, you know, sometimes, and I would say this all the time, not with Bo, with any quarterback, you know, I I don't want to feel like we're down 17 in the fourth quarter where now you're playing in a different type of game relative to the throws you're making.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: So there is that happy medium, I think.
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: And I think part of that, you know, these guys can get on a roll a little bit.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: You know, the two guys playing last night certainly were feeling it.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: And and yen there's that throw at the end of the half by Josh where so I think it's you gotta be careful how much it's one of those things where there's that old you gotta be careful how much you tell that position.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: And and when you do, it means something.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: And then sometimes something will happen in a play and and I'm fine with what just happened.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: Let's get to the next play.
- 15:20unknown: Okay.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: But keep going.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: I just want to clear one thing.
- 15:22unknown: Yeah.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: No, no, you're not a young man, but I'm really old.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: So back in the day, if don't you could say something, and I could run to a player's lot or anything.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: Oh, I didn't mean it that way.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, I know.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: I w I was I didn't mean it that way.
- 15:38SPEAKER_02: Totally.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: So I asked you very respectfully.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: And I didn't mean it was I did not mean it in I asked you very respectfully.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: Yes, I did not mean that.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: No, I was just frickin' tired and cranky.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: What's my nickname?
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: I was Mr.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Krabby Pants.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: I appreciate you asking that.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: Is it that that area like a quarterback is trying to find that group where you do have the right balance of being aggressive, don't check it out.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: Is that an area where you found it's better to let him find his way or can you press too hard to push up front?
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: Again, I think you just when you're when you're talking look, you get to game day and and I don't think you're talking as much hookands.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: You know, I think you're talking about what you see, and and I think you gotta be careful how much you say, and then there's times where is what we're looking for.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: And hopefully you planted the seed enough with the looks, and that's why the like today and tomorrow, because we're walking through those looks are still invaluable that involve a progression.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I I think that only only the expert knows what to ignore.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: Sometimes there's things that I remember as a young coach, you you want to cover everything, and then sometimes when you're young and you don't know better and you're covering everything, you haven't covered anything.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: If that makes any sense.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: I saw that away.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: He he was so fixated.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: Um, is that like in short weeks?
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: It's like, let's just do what we were supposed to do and then get to the game.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and and look, you know, when you're tired and you're into that later part of the game, you you have to fall back on f something.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: Your fundamentals, you know, schemes that maybe you've read 14 more times than uh one more time.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: Does the way you finish Sunday's game give you additional confidence in the running game, but you look at it, you still have issues.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: Well, as coaches yeah.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: No, I listen, as coaches I think we go to bed every night, we feel like we have issues.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: But yeah, that's that's uh it's important.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: It's important in this game for both teams.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: What what did you see for JK specifically and and the rest of the running game in that with a little bit more consistency and and you know, we kinda it's hard to it's hard to get in a rhythm sometimes if you're if you're not having the enough touches and and we were able to do that.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: From a defensive standpoint.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: So we're all the game.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: We had such a high rate of force turnovers.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: All the above, I mean, you know, we you we're seeing it almost and you go back to Lovey Smith and Monty Kiffin.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: There was that they used to be turnovers and then they became takeaways.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Really in our lifetime, you know, late eighties, early nineties, y you saw peanut tilt you you saw that beginning to take place where I would say prior to there were fumbles and there were interceptions, but the way that it's being coached last night you know, late in the game there's a punch out, you know, it's those are purposeful it happened with Huff early in the game last week.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: You know, those are those are huge huge swings of momentum and and obviously the statistics on it, you you guys are well aware.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: It's just overwhelming.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: We have an end-of-the-situation this week, especially in Washington game.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, you think the last as far.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, come back and you you always you know, we'll have a review period, we'll go through this week in football.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: Like we'll kind of go around the lake and just look at all those things.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: You know, I I've said this historically speaking, it it started way back with Pisarchick, you know, fumbling and Herman Edwards scampering in the end zone, and then everyone had a an index card the following week, and that that's so we're we're always looking at end of game, end of half situations.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: Evan Rothstein's fantastic.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: He'll remind me, I'll scream at him, I know.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: But it's good to be reminded.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: And yeah, there's there's there's there's so many different scenarios that you just gotta keep you know, giving him names, calling it, talking about it, and then you know, keeping track of timeouts and that type of thing.
- 20:35SPEAKER_04: Do you rely on Evan even four when you're calling plays now?
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: Because you you have yeah, but but uh both, you know, in in New Orleans uh Rizzy's real good.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: So Rizzy's in yelling, Evan's yelling, I'm yelling back at him, I know.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: But it's good to like I I I always want that.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: You know, it's it's great that I'm hearing we're all on the same page.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: And so yeah.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: You uh you talked about toward the end of last year and early this year about when the crowd is loud.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: Have you seen that change?
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: It's been a it's been old.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: It's been it's been fantastic.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: It's been fantastic.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: It's been fantastic.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: Peyton's got his little thing going, you know.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: I like that we stopped the shell games and all that.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: You know, if you ask them to listen, if you ask them to quiet down, they will.
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: But it's been fantastic.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: The atmosphere's been great.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: The defending champions are if you think it helps you, you play such tough teams already.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: Shoot, they play tough teams each week.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: You know, you feel like it's a challenge.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: They just came off a tough game and but you guys have played among the rest of the league.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: No, it's it's you just you turn the page after you go to sleep after that game, and then the next one starts.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: It's kind of where we're at.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: You're uh you you've gotten pressured on pressure looks out there down, I think.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Some metrics say like more than anybody in football.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Have you felt that?
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: You think there's funity there?
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: Fair question, yeah, to some degree, and then you all right, philosophically, you know, spags, you you you look at some of the teams you're playing, you gotta look at you know what their philosophy is.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: Certainly it'll keep coming if you're not, you know, if you don't have ways to to beat it.
- 22:22SPEAKER_05: So, you know, obviously he was talking early on in that press conference about playing on a short week, you know, 15, 20 years, you know, 20, 30 years ago, the the short week was playing on a Sunday and then and then or playing on a Monday night and then playing on a Sunday, you know, and and and back then that was a short week, and how much the NFL has changed now, you know, teams back then, you know, especially early in the in the 80s and and and 90s, you know, some teams handled the short week better than others, and it was it was difficult to do, and it was difficult to really sit there and and and be ready.
- 23:00SPEAKER_05: And again, all these conferences that I play here on this podcast are via Denver Broncos.com.
- 23:05SPEAKER_05: The app I follow so thank you to them.
- 23:07SPEAKER_05: They don't pay me, I don't pay them, but it's just a a fun little app that I use to keep up on the Broncos.
- 23:13SPEAKER_05: The next little bit I'm gonna play here is a hype video to get us all hyped up for Thursday Night Football between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks.
- 23:21SPEAKER_05: Both will be wearing their 1977 throwback uniforms, which are both really, really cool.
- 23:27SPEAKER_05: And it'll be an old rematch lobber knocker of when the Seattle Seahawks were in the AFC West before they join joining the NFC West.
- 23:39SPEAKER_05: So here's a quick little hike video.
- 23:42SPEAKER_05: Let's go broncos.
- 24:18SPEAKER_05: So hopefully that gets everybody hyped up and they're ready to go.
- 24:23SPEAKER_05: We'll see.
- 24:24SPEAKER_05: But I mean I'm I'm happy to see how the Broncos are gonna do tonight.
