- 0:0716, 1978, the Cleveland Indians traveled to Detroit
- 0:11to play the Tigers at Tiger Stadium for a Wednesday
- 0:13night game. Both teams were squarely out of the
- 0:16playoff hunt at this point. Cleveland was managed
- 0:18by Jeff Torborg and was far below .500 at 53
- 0:21-65. The Tigers were managed by Ralph Houck,
- 0:24and although a respectable 65 -52 record, were
- 0:27nine games back and in fourth place in the AL
- 0:29East. This game featured starting pitchers David
- 0:31Clyde for the Indians versus Jack Billingham
- 0:34for the Tigers. This audio recording is from
- 0:36the Cleveland Radio Broadcast featuring announcers
- 0:38Herb Score and Joe Tate. No score at the end
- 0:41of one in their first game. And here at Tiger
- 0:44Stadium, Jack Billingham. Twelve wins, five losses.
- 0:47One -on -one against the Indians ready to go.
- 0:49He'll face Rick Manning. It's Joe Tate to tell
- 0:51you that it is. A beautiful night for baseball.
- 0:53Thank you, Herb. Good evening, everybody. Billingham
- 0:55throws the first pitch outside to Manning, and
- 0:57the game is underway. Rick hitting .260, three
- 1:00homers, 39 RBIs, and the pitch to him is a strike
- 1:02to the outside. Corner one and one. Manning seven
- 1:05for 23 against the Tigers this year with two
- 1:08runs batted in. Billingham, the right -hander,
- 1:11he's started twice before against the Indians,
- 1:13won one and lost one. Pitched to Manning, popped
- 1:16foul out of play upstairs over our heads of the
- 1:18count as one and two. Cleveland comes in with
- 1:21a record of 53 and 64 on the road. They have
- 1:23won 20 and lost 37, including two straight here
- 1:26at Detroit. They've taken the Tigers three out
- 1:28of five in Cleveland. Tigers at 64 and 52. Both
- 1:32teams coming off losses last night. 1 -2 pitch
- 1:34to Manning, pop -up foul, again out of play to
- 1:36the left, but the count remains at a ball and
- 1:38two strikes. Here in Tiger Stadium, 325 to the
- 1:41right field line, 340 in left, 370 in the power
- 1:45alley in right center, 365 in left center, 440
- 1:49feet in straightaway center field. Bellingham
- 1:52with a 1 -2 pitch to Manning, hits a shot into
- 1:54the hole and into left field, a base hit between
- 1:56Rodriguez and Trammell. Now Manning opens the
- 1:59ball game with a single to left field. And the
- 2:03batter is Buddy Bell. Bell, a right -hand hitter,
- 2:08at 300 right on the hit. Five homers, 48 RBIs.
- 2:11One for 10 against Detroit with two runs batted
- 2:13in. Buddy's hit safely in his last six games.
- 2:17Nine for 26 in that span, a .346 mark. He's 11th
- 2:21in the league at a .300 mark, and just 23 hits
- 2:23short of a .1000 mark for his career. He's also
- 2:26tied for fifth in the league in triples. Bellingham
- 2:30to the stretch, banning at first, pitch to Bell,
- 2:32drive down the right field line, it is starting
- 2:34to fade into the corner, and Corcoran reaches
- 2:36out, cuts the ball, bangs into the usher at the
- 2:39wall, and hangs on. Corcoran takes a foul fly
- 2:45on the corner. The good thing about usher was
- 2:49there, he added some panning because Corcoran
- 2:51plowed into the wall after the catch. He did
- 2:54a good job of just getting through that ball.
- 2:59Todd Manning still at first base, and here's
- 3:01Johnny Grubb, the left -hand batter. Grubb at
- 3:04.276, 14 homers, 55 RBIs, 5 for 20 against Detroit
- 3:08this year. He, too, has a six -game hitting streak
- 3:11going. He's ninth in the American League with
- 3:13a .383 on -base percentage, tied with Bell for
- 3:16fifth and triples with sixth. In his last six
- 3:19games, he's eighth for 23, and over his last
- 3:2230 ballgames, his batting average, .339, dating
- 3:24back to July 14th. He has had six homers, 24
- 3:28RBIs, and 20 runs scored in that 30 -game stretch.
- 3:31The pitch is low, ball one. Joe Nasek coaching
- 3:34at third, Rocky Calavito at first. Billingham
- 3:37with one out, one on. Mickey Stanley at first
- 3:40base tonight. Filling in for Jason Thompson,
- 3:43holding out the bag with a runner. Throw to first
- 3:46base, Manning goes back. Whitaker at second,
- 3:48Trammell at short, Rodriguez at third. Kempin
- 3:51left, LaFleur in center, Corcoran in right. Parrish
- 3:54catching, and Jack Billingham on the mound. A
- 3:56stretch, 1 -0 pitch, and Grubb checked his swing
- 3:59but went too far, and the count is even at a
- 4:01ball and a strike. Andre Thornton on deck. Indians
- 4:05hitting .267 as a team with 78 homers, hitting
- 4:08only .229 against Detroit with five home runs.
- 4:14Billingham looks in for the sign from Parrish.
- 4:17One ball, one strike. Manning leads at first.
- 4:19The pitch to Grubb, and John raps one into center
- 4:21field. The floor is out there and stabs that
- 4:23line drive two out. Hard hit ball, but LaFleur
- 4:29picks it off in the air. Two down, Manning still
- 4:31at first base, and on comes Andre Thornton. Thunder
- 4:35hitting 276, 23 homers, 76 RBIs, 5 for 20 against
- 4:39the Tigers with one home run, four RBIs. The
- 4:42Tigers have walked him eight times this year.
- 4:45Thornton, fifth in home runs and RBIs among scored,
- 4:48third in walks and on -base percentage, fifth
- 4:51in slugging. He has accounted for 26 % of the
- 4:54Tribe's total runs this year. Andre has scored
- 4:5874 and driven in 76. Stretch, pitch. Thornton
- 5:04takes strike one. Throwing in that big sweeping
- 5:10curveball for a good hard sinker, slider. This
- 5:14had good control this year. Check the temperature.
- 5:19Here's the strike one pitch. Thornton chops the
- 5:22ball foul back to the base of the screen in the
- 5:23counter strike two. First of a brief two -game
- 5:28set. Indians will be back here one more time
- 5:31before the Tigers come to Cleveland. We'll be
- 5:34playing them on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,
- 5:36the 8th, 9th, and 10th of September. And then
- 5:37the Tigers come back to town on Friday, Saturday,
- 5:40and Sunday, the 15th, 16th, and 17th of September.
- 5:44Stretch by Bellingham. Two -strike pitch. Thornton
- 5:48takes a little low. One ball, two strikes. Incidentally,
- 5:51today, right -hand reliever Steve Foucault...
- 5:54was claimed on waivers by Kansas City, and the
- 5:56Tigers have purchased the contract of right -hand
- 5:58pitcher Dave Tobik from Evansville. He was a
- 6:01former All -American at Ohio University. One
- 6:05ball, two strikes with two outs. The pitch is
- 6:07hit into the hole that's short, right through
- 6:09Trammell's legs into left field. That was a croquet
- 6:14shot right through the legs of the shortstop,
- 6:16Allen Trammell. You'll not see that happen very
- 6:19often because he has really played defensively
- 6:22outstandingly well. Air charged to Trammell.
- 6:32And the batter is Gary Alexander. Alexander,
- 6:38a right -hand batter, catching tonight for the
- 6:40Indians. Hitting 235, 22 homers, 64 runs batted
- 6:44in. 7 for 25 against Detroit in a Cleveland uniform
- 6:49with 3 homers and 11 RBI. Gary's had five hits
- 6:52in his last nine at -bats. First pitch is a strike
- 6:56of an ease on the inside corner, strike one.
- 7:0080 degrees at 8 o 'clock, according to the Weather
- 7:03Bureau. Wind is west at 12 miles per hour. The
- 7:08pitch, hit hard but fouled on the third baseline
- 7:11to the Tiger bullpen. Bangs off the dugout to
- 7:13the usher down that way, still strike two. First
- 7:24inning, Indians with runners at first and at
- 7:26second and two outs. Stretch. Two -strike pitch.
- 7:35Check swing. Pitch low and outside. One ball,
- 7:38two strikes. Alexander says something to Ron
- 7:42Luciano, and Luciano wants to see the baseball.
- 7:46Takes a look at it. a little saliva and decides
- 7:51that he can't get the spot off the ball and throws
- 7:53it out of play. One ball, two strikes with two
- 7:58outs in the top of the first inning. Herb Billingham
- 8:02is one of these guys, if you get to him, you
- 8:04better get him early. If you get in the groove,
- 8:06you're in trouble. That is right. He starts changing
- 8:07speeds on you and gets that good control working.
- 8:111 -2 pitch. Alexander hits a very high pop -up
- 8:14down the right side. Corcoran going over into
- 8:17the corner, under the ball, makes the catch to
- 8:18retire the side. On the first inning for the
- 8:21Indians, no run to hit an error. Two men left.
- 8:24And at the end of one half inning of play, the
- 8:26Indians nothing and the Tigers are coming to
- 8:27bat. 26 silver dollars. That's right, 26 silver
- 8:31dollars. John Lucas is giving away 26 silver
- 8:33dollars with purchase of selected appliances
- 8:35at the White Westinghouse Anniversary Special
- 8:37Sale going on now at Lucas Appliance in Mount
- 8:40Vernon. A family -sized... energy -saving chest
- 8:42freezer or a deluxe 30 -inch full -featured electric
- 8:45range, now only $218. That's a savings of over
- 8:48$60, and you could use your 26 silver dollars
- 8:51as down payment. Lucas Appliance at 121 South
- 8:54Main Street in Mount Vernon is having their 26th
- 8:56anniversary sale now. Here's some great news
- 8:59for people who like to know they've made a smart
- 9:01buy. At Spitzer Dodge in Columbus, we've got
- 9:03the stylish 1978 Dodge Diplomat for just $47
- 9:06.95. That's right, a luxurious Diplomat, not
- 9:09$6 ,000 or $7 ,000, just $47 .95. And diplomatically
- 9:13speaking, that's a smart buy. This time, instead
- 9:16of Chevy or Ford, pick out a mind -changer, the
- 9:19new favorite Diplomat for just $47 .95. See you
- 9:22soon at Spitzer Dodge, a Columbus tradition at
- 9:255100 East Main Street. but Dave Tobik from Ohio
- 9:34University, and of course he is a native of Euclid,
- 9:36Ohio, and now resides in Lyndhurst. He had a
- 9:39non -roster trial with the Tigers last spring.
- 9:41He will be in uniform tomorrow wearing number
- 9:443080. It was 5 -4 with nine saves at Evansville
- 9:47and a 3 .38 ERA in 33 games with the triplets.
- 9:52He allowed 72 hits but struck out 70 while walking
- 9:5526 in 80 innings. 6 '1", 190 pounds, and an All
- 9:59-American at Ohio University. He replaces Steve
- 10:01Foucault. who was put on waivers today by the
- 10:04Tigers and claimed to buy Kansas City. I see
- 10:09the White Sox are going to crank up a new face
- 10:11tonight. Baumgarten is pitching for the Chicago
- 10:15White Sox down in Texas, and he will be going
- 10:19against Doyle Alexander. Leading off for the
- 10:26Detroit Tigers in the home half of the first
- 10:28inning is Ron LaFleur, and he takes the first
- 10:30pitch from David Clyde, low ball one. LaFleur
- 10:34at 291, seven homers, 43 RBIs, nine for 30 against
- 10:37Cleveland with three runs batted in. He has a
- 10:39six -game hitting streak going, takes the first
- 10:41pitch low, and then the next one high and tight,
- 10:43ball two. LaFleur has hit safely in six straight,
- 10:47seven for 22, and also hit safely in seven of
- 10:50his last eight games. He moves up on a pitch
- 10:53that's a strike, and the count is 2 -1. His five
- 10:56-game scoring streak was snapped last night,
- 10:58but he has crossed the plate eight times in the
- 11:00last six games. Here comes the 2 -1 pitch to
- 11:04LaFleur, and he wraps the bouncing ball by Bellman
- 11:06into left field of base set, and now that sets
- 11:08the stage for another set of statistics from
- 11:10Ron LaFleur. That's right. LaFleur has swiped
- 11:1424 bases in a row since last being caught at
- 11:16Texas on July 9th, and he needs two more to tie
- 11:19Mitchell Page's American League record of 26
- 11:21straight set last year. He leads 0 -55. That
- 11:25tops the American and National League. He's also
- 11:28scored 94 runs, which is tops in both leagues.
- 11:31He's only been caught eight times trying to steal.
- 11:35His hitting streak has been extended to seven
- 11:37straight with that leadoff single against David
- 11:39Clyde. Now we'll see what he does to the bases.
- 11:41And a bunt try by Whitaker, his foul tip, strike
- 11:44one. Whitaker at 300, two homers, 41 RBIs, eight
- 11:48for 18 against Cleveland with three RBIs. They
- 11:50have also walked him five times. Here comes Jimmy
- 11:52Warfield out to check on Gary Alexander, who
- 11:55took that foul tip. on his hand. Come on, the
- 12:00gloved hand, however. Whitaker has had 12 hits
- 12:04in his last 30 at -bats during the eight -game
- 12:06streak. He has scored 10 and batted an eight.
- 12:10Herb, we were impressed with Whitaker and we
- 12:12saw him early in the season. He has done nothing
- 12:14since that time to take away the impressiveness.
- 12:16I should say not. I was talking with Ralph Hock
- 12:18before the game and he said that Whitaker and
- 12:20Trammell, he said in all his years of baseball,
- 12:23and he's been around a while, he said he's never
- 12:24seen two kids come up. at such a young age that
- 12:27work so well together and do the job so well.
- 12:29He said they have just been outstanding. He had
- 12:31the pleasure to watch them. Milwaukee has taken
- 12:33a 2 -0 lead on Toronto at the end of three in
- 12:36their first game. Stretch by Clyde with LaFleur
- 12:39at first and they pitch out. Evens the count
- 12:42at one and one, LaFleur was not going. Overall,
- 12:47LaFleur has stolen 55 times in 63 tries. Bell
- 12:53on the grass at third. Stretch and pitch, and
- 12:56Whitaker ducks away from a high -tight fastball,
- 12:592 -1. Thornton at first, Kuyper at second, Berizer
- 13:04at short, Bell at third, Grubb in left, Manning
- 13:08in center, Norris in right, Alexander catching,
- 13:10and on the mound, the left -hander, David Clyde.
- 13:12McClure at first, and nobody up, 2 -1, pitch
- 13:14to Whitaker, swing, and a miss, two balls, two
- 13:17strikes. Dick Krasuski coaching at third base,
- 13:21Freddie Hatfield at first. Tigers in with a team
- 13:26batting average of .280 and .95. Homers hitting
- 13:28.271 against Cleveland with four home runs. 2
- 13:32-2 pitch to Whitaker. Moves up and Bunce foul.
- 13:34He's out of there. Oh, Whitaker. Bunce foul on
- 13:38a third strike. Goes as a strikeout. First one
- 13:42for David Kladd. One out with LaFleur at first
- 13:46base. Here's Rusty Staub. Staub at 301, 19 homers,
- 13:5096 RBIs, 7 for 26 against Cleveland with 2 home
- 13:53runs, 7 runs batted in, and the Indians have
- 13:56walked him 7 times. Staub is hit safely in 7
- 14:02of his last 8 games, 13 for 31 on that span.
- 14:05He's batted in 9 runs now to tie Jim Rice for
- 14:07the Major League lead with 96. He'll be a post
- 14:10-game guest. Stretch by Clive, looks to the forward
- 14:15first. And the pitch to Staub. Long drive. Right
- 14:19center field. Manning going back with a lot of
- 14:21pasture. Backpedaling and makes the catch deep
- 14:23at right center. Two outs. Staub gave that one
- 14:30a long ride. Two down. Steve Kemp the batter.
- 14:36Kemp is hitting .283, nine homers, 59 RBIs. Three
- 14:39for 29 against Cleveland. One home run, five
- 14:41runs batted in. And he has walked five times
- 14:44against the tribe. Steve had a rough night in
- 14:50left field last night, and I guess the fans,
- 14:53judging from what you read in the papers, touched
- 14:54him up pretty good. Two outs with LaFleur at
- 15:02first base of the first inning. Lance Perry,
- 15:05Shondek. Stretch by Clyde. And the pitch. Pitch
- 15:09out. LaFleur not going. Ball one. Campe left
- 15:14-hand batter. He's hit safely in 14 of his last
- 15:1915 games, hitting .377 on that span, hitting
- 15:23.318 over his last 20 games, and he's second
- 15:25in the league in walks with 80. Pitch is high
- 15:28and inside, ball two. The Detroit Tigers have
- 15:35won nine out of their last 12, and the Indians
- 15:37have dropped 10 of their last 12. The stretch.
- 15:46Look to first. And the pitch. High and inside
- 15:50with a fastball. 3 -0. Tigers have been hot since
- 16:00we saw them last. After their 8 -4 win over Cleveland
- 16:03on July 6th, they were 40 -41. They're now 64
- 16:06-52. The pitch. Fastball. Strike. Knee high.
- 16:12Inside corner. 3 -1. The Indians, when they departed
- 16:15Detroit, were at 37 -44. They are now 53 -64.
- 16:23A stretch. Look to first. 3 -1 pitch. LaFleur
- 16:27goes, and the ball is rammed to right center
- 16:29field. Well tagged. Manning racing back. Can't
- 16:31get it. Bounces up against the wall. LaFleur
- 16:33will score easily. Kept the second base standing
- 16:36with a double. And the Tigers lead 1 -0. Well,
- 16:39LaFleur running with the pitch, and he scored
- 16:41easily. That is Steve Kemp's 60th run batted
- 16:51in against Cleveland. And for Steve Kemp, his
- 16:5914th double of the year. Now this brings to bat
- 17:08Lance Parrish, the right -hand batting catcher,
- 17:09hitting .232, 11 homers, 26 RBIs. Bounces in
- 17:14to Alexander, ball one. Parrish is four for 13
- 17:19with a run batted in against Cleveland this year.
- 17:25The Giants in Montreal. They're scoreless after
- 17:28one. Blue against Freiman. The stretch. Look
- 17:35back to Kemp. Pitch. Swing and a miss on a high
- 17:38fastball. One ball, one strike. Pirates 2 -0
- 17:42over... Cincinnati at the end of two in Pittsburgh.
- 17:46And Reggie Smith just did a grand slam for the
- 17:48Dodgers off Jim Cotta, the third inning. Dodgers
- 17:52leading 4 -0 at Philadelphia. Stretch by Clyde.
- 17:57And the 1 -1 pitch to Lance Parrish. Swing and
- 17:59a miss. Now foul tip. He stays alive. Ball was
- 18:04just grazed on the bat of Parrish in and out
- 18:07of the middle of Alexander. One ball, two strikes.
- 18:17David Clyde with a runner at second base and
- 18:19two outs. A stretch, one -two pitch, Parrish
- 18:24fouls another one back, bounces off the facing
- 18:26in front of the seats, ricochets back out to
- 18:29the foul line, one ball, two strikes. Detroit
- 18:33has taken a one -to -nothing lead in the first
- 18:35inning here at Tiger Stadium, single by LaFleur
- 18:38and a two -out double by Kemp. Stretch by Clyde.
- 18:46And the 1 -2 pitch to the left -hand batter.
- 18:48Parrish takes low and inside. Two balls, two
- 18:51strikes. Parrish is 6 '3", 195. At a Diamond
- 18:57Bar, California. Clyde the stretch. Look back
- 19:06to Kemp. And the 2 -2 pitch to Parrish. Way outside
- 19:10and high. Full count of 3 -2. The Tigers lead
- 19:171 -0. Indians with a threat on the top. The first
- 19:20could not score against Billingham. Look in for
- 19:33the sign. Here's the stretch. 3 -2 pitch to Parrish.
- 19:37Chopped foul behind the plate. And the count
- 19:39is still three balls, two strikes. Back to Kemp.
- 19:573 -2 pitch to Parrish. Fastball. Low ball for
- 20:00him. That is the first walk given up by David
- 20:07Clyde. Dave now in 103 and one -third innings
- 20:11has struck out 55 and walked 42. Kuyper, Clyde,
- 20:15and Alexander will meet on the mound as Aurelio
- 20:17Rodriguez gets ready to step in. Rodriguez hitting
- 20:20266. Six homers, 34 runs batted in. 5 -for -21
- 20:24against Cleveland with two ribbies. He's hit
- 20:26safely in his last five ballgames. 6 -for -12
- 20:30in that span. And it is this time of the year
- 20:33that the PR folks sometimes have to reach a little
- 20:36bit to find things to put in their notes. And
- 20:38tonight, with Aurelio Rodriguez, the notes say,
- 20:40one of the few players in Major League history
- 20:42to have each vowel in his first name. Now that's
- 20:46reaching a little bit. That is reaching. Kemp
- 20:49at second, Parrish at first. Two outs, Tigers
- 20:51lead 1 -0. The stretch by David Clyde, the look
- 20:55back, and the bluff by Kuyper towards second.
- 20:59Kemp jumps about a step and a half back toward
- 21:01the bag. Rodriguez, a right -hand batter. A stretch
- 21:10by Clyde, and the pitch to Rodriguez. Takes strike
- 21:13one on the inside corner. Al McCray is on. inning
- 21:19for Kansas City, but that may be too little too
- 21:22late. It is 5 -1 in favor of the Twins, and they
- 21:26are batting in the 8th. A stretch. And the pitch.
- 21:33Hit hard and foul and into the seats in the upper
- 21:37deck on the right. Depending on what California
- 21:39does with Boston tonight, Kansas City could drop
- 21:42out of first place. Milwaukee is rolling at the
- 21:46expense of the Blue Jays. They have a 4 -0 lead
- 21:49at the end of four innings of their first game
- 21:50behind Mike Caldwell. A stretch by Clyde and
- 21:54the two -strike pitch to Rodriguez. Fastball.
- 21:57Outside. 1 -2. David Clyde has thrown quite a
- 22:04few pitches here in this first inning. Tigers
- 22:08lead 1 -0. Two men on, two men out. A stretch.
- 22:13And the left -hander with a 1 -2 pitch to Rodriguez.
- 22:15High fly ball. Right center field. Manning and
- 22:19Norris getting together. And Jimmy Norris makes
- 22:21the catch. The right fielder retires the side
- 22:23with that grab. But the Tigers get on the scoreboard.
- 22:26One run, two hits, and a walk with two men left.
- 22:29And at the end of one inning of play, Detroit
- 22:311 and Cleveland nothing. This is Dave Smith from

- 23:37of the second inning, Carbo, Norris, and Kuyper,
- 23:39three left -hand batters against the right -hander,
- 23:41Billingham. Urban, I would like to wish the very
- 23:44best to J .T. Miller of Canton, Ohio, the young
- 23:47man just home from the hospital after sustaining
- 23:49a foot injury. We understand that J .T. is numbered
- 23:52among the best of Indian fans down around Canton,
- 23:54Ohio, and we sincerely hope that he's back in
- 23:56good health in the very near future. We're happy
- 23:58to have him listening in tonight. Down on the
- 24:01farm last night, the opponents won two and the
- 24:03weatherman got the other two. Albuquerque shut
- 24:06out Portland for another one of the few times
- 24:08Portland's been shut out this year. They've been
- 24:10banging the ball. They were held to three hits.
- 24:12Tom McGuff took the loss. Chattanooga and Waterloo
- 24:15were both rained out. Little Falls beat Batavia
- 24:17in the New York Penn League in both games of
- 24:19a twin -eyed doubleheader. Pitched to Carbo,
- 24:22fastball inside, ball one. Bernie hitting 262,
- 24:25two homers, 14 RBIs, 4 for 14 against Detroit
- 24:28with one run batted in. Little Falls beat Batavia
- 24:328 -7 and 7 -0. Saavedra hit a home run for Batavia
- 24:35in the first game, but Bozeman throw a no -hitter
- 24:38in the nightcap for Little Falls. There's a shot
- 24:40up the middle on the ground and into center field.
- 24:42A base hit by Whitaker. Bernie Carbo spanks the
- 24:45ball on the ground right up the middle. Whitaker
- 24:47came galloping over behind the bag but couldn't
- 24:50flag it down, and the Indians have their second
- 24:52hit. Jimmy Norris, the left -hand batting right
- 24:55fielder. 269, two homers, 20 RBIs. He is 0 for
- 25:027 against Detroit with one run batted in. Tigers
- 25:07lead 1 -0 in the top half of the second inning.
- 25:11Zach Billingham looking for win number 13. And
- 25:14tomorrow night we look at another 12 -game winner,
- 25:16Jim Slayton. Stretch of the pitch, fastball,
- 25:19low ball one. Tigers, one run, two hits, one
- 25:24error. And the Indians, no runs. Two hits, no
- 25:27errors. Now stretch. Pitch. Fastball again loaded.
- 25:37Norris ball two. 2 -0. Jack Billingham. Fine
- 25:52days with the Cincinnati Reds. He throws a pitch
- 25:54outside to Norris. Now the count goes to 3 -0,
- 25:58and the Indians may be on the verge of getting
- 25:59something started here on the second inning.
- 26:03Tigers picked up a run on the first on a single
- 26:05by LaFleur and a two -out double by Kemp. A stretch.
- 26:103 -0 pitch. Norris takes a strike on the outside
- 26:13part of the plate above the knees. 3 -1. Bernie
- 26:19Carbo at first base. Mickey Stanley holding the
- 26:21bag. A stretch. And a 3 -1 pitch. Norris chops
- 26:28the ball foul over to the first base dugout.
- 26:31Usher beats the ball boy to the ball. Pretty
- 26:34good race. 3 -2. Indians occupy the first base
- 26:39dugout here at Tiger Stadium. And the Detroit
- 26:42Tigers almost below us here on the third base
- 26:44side. Urban and I sit in an ideal place to see
- 26:48the ball game. Looking right up the first base
- 26:51foul line. About 70 feet from home plate. Wrapped
- 26:54down the first base line. Great grab by Stanley
- 26:56Diving. Throws to second and got Carbo trapped
- 26:58off the bag. Clips to Rodriguez. Running him
- 27:01back to second. And it's a double play. Oh, my.
- 27:05Carbo didn't know where the ball was. He made
- 27:07the turn at second base and took about a step
- 27:10and a half or two steps beyond the bag and just
- 27:11stopped and looked around. And when he looked
- 27:14towards second base, there was Whitaker with
- 27:16the ball chasing him. Hanley engineered the whole
- 27:21thing with a spectacular dive toward the foul
- 27:23line. Caught the ball on one hop, falling on
- 27:26the bag for the out, straightened up, and then
- 27:28found Mr. Carbo wandering between second and
- 27:31third, and they ran him down. Now there are two
- 27:36outs and nobody on. Here's Dwayne Kuyper at bat,
- 27:41and Dwayne pops the foul over our heads. Out
- 27:44of play, strike one. Kuyper hitting 285, 33 RBIs,
- 27:495 for 23 against Detroit. Kuyper has been sidelined
- 27:52since August the 11th with cartilage damage in
- 27:55his right knee, and he had collected 10 hits
- 27:56and 28 at -bats prior to the injury. Picks high
- 27:59and outside. One ball, one strike. Wind up on
- 28:09the next pitch. Kuyper fouls it back to the screen.
- 28:11One ball, two strikes. That play went 3 -6 -5.
- 28:15on the rundown of Carabao. Two outs and nobody
- 28:25on. Here's the one -two pitch. High. Two balls,
- 28:29two strikes. Bellingham looks in, gets the sign.
- 28:40Wind up. 2 -2 pitch to Dwayne Kuyper. Hits the
- 28:43bouncing ball up the middle behind the bag. Grabbed
- 28:46by Whitaker, but no chance to throw. Kuyper beats
- 28:48out the infield hit. Dwayne Kuyper returns to
- 28:51the lineup with a bouncing single. That is the
- 28:58third Indian hit. I tell you, that Dwayne Kuyper
- 29:02is something else. He sure is. You put that kind
- 29:04of desire and determination and hustle into 25
- 29:07people in the same uniform, you're going to have
- 29:09yourself a ball club that'll just beat you to
- 29:10death. Verizer, 291, 24 RBIs, 7 for 20 against
- 29:16his former teammates with one run batted in.
- 29:18Pitch to Tommy, low, good stop on the bouncing
- 29:21pitch by Parrish. He had to go quickly to his
- 29:24right and take that ball on the bounce in the
- 29:26left -hand batter's box. 1 -0 count on Verizer.
- 29:35Kuyper leads at first base, Stanley holding in
- 29:37the bag, stretched by Billingham, pitch to Verizer,
- 29:40fastball inside. Ball two. Tommy back down in
- 29:45the number nine spot of the order where he has
- 29:47done so very well this year. Rick Manning on
- 29:50deck. Stretch by Billingham. Pitch to Beriser.
- 29:53Swing and a miss. Two balls and a strike. There's
- 30:00a pretty healthy breeze roaring by this ballpark,
- 30:02but down inside, not quite that strong a wind.
- 30:07When you get something up in the air, it might
- 30:08ride. Pitch to Verizer. Bouncing ball to the
- 30:10shortstop. Trammell has it. Flips over to Whitaker
- 30:12for the force on Kuyper. And the side is retired.
- 30:15No runs. Two hits. But a man left. And at the
- 30:17end of one and one -half innings of play, the
- 30:20score, the Detroit Tigers won the Cleveland Indians
- 30:23nothing. Say, did you hear about all the great
- 30:25specials at our car wash in Newark? Yeah, Wednesday

- 31:09And diplomatically speaking, that's a smart buy.

- 31:14a mind -changer, the new favorite Diplomat for
- 31:16just $47 .95. See you soon at Spitzer Dodge,
- 31:20a Columbus tradition at 5100 East Main Street.
- 31:27action in the National League. Houston beat St.
- 31:29Louis 4 -2. San Diego beat New York 2 -1. And
- 31:32Atlanta blanked the Cubs 9 -0. Both Phil Necro
- 31:35and Joe Necro started one and one for distance
- 31:38today. Joe for the Astros and Phil for the Braves.
- 31:41Tonight, Pirates 2 -0 over Cincinnati in the
- 31:44fourth. The Dodgers 4 -1 over the Phillies in
- 31:46the fifth. The Giants and the Expos scoreless
- 31:49in the third. Minnesota 5 -1 over Kansas City
- 31:52in the eighth inning of their first game. Milwaukee
- 31:544 -0 over Toronto in the fifth inning of their
- 31:56first game. First pitch to Mickey Stanley in
- 31:58the second inning is a swinging strike one. Stanley,
- 32:01264, two homers, seven RBIs, and two for nine
- 32:04in the series against the Cleveland Indians this
- 32:07year. Wind up by Clyde to the pitch. Stanley
- 32:10drives one into left field. Johnny Grubb going
- 32:13back, getting under the ball, and makes the catch
- 32:15about a step away from the warning pass. One
- 32:20out of the second inning. Batter is Tim Corcoran,
- 32:25the right fielder, left -hand batter. Corcoran
- 32:27at 269, one over 22 RBIs, two for nine against
- 32:30Cleveland thus far this year. He has had 10 hits
- 32:33in his last 26 at -bats, hitting safely in six
- 32:35of his last seven games, and he's had seven RBIs
- 32:38in that span. Start of the year, Charlie Spikes
- 32:42and Corcoran were scheduled to duel it out for
- 32:44that right field spot. Charlie ended up in Evansville
- 32:47and also on the injured list. Bunt. Beauty. Third
- 32:49base. Side. Bell. No chance. Face it. Boy, Corcoran
- 32:52laid down a perfect punt. No chance to get in.
- 33:00Bunt single for Tim Corcoran. Hits are now even
- 33:05at three. And it brings on Allen Trammell, the
- 33:07shortstop. Trammell at 255. Two homers, 22 RBIs.
- 33:11Five for 14 against Cleveland with one run batted
- 33:14in. One out, one on. Second inning, Tigers lead
- 33:18one to nothing. Cramer looks down to the third
- 33:24base coach, Dick Krasuski, for the sign. Dick
- 33:29Krasuski's taking his television set and he's,
- 33:31well, he's risking a TV set. He's going to have
- 33:33Howard Stitzel, our engineer, fix it. Say goodbye
- 33:37to the TV set. Fitch is inside ball one. You
- 33:39are living dangerously when you hand Mr. Stitzel
- 33:42a screwdriver. You're living dangerously when
- 33:45you're just close to him. Well caught on Alan
- 33:49Trammell. A stretch by the left -hander, David
- 33:51Clyde. Looks to first base and delivers to Trammell.
- 33:54Inside again, ball two. Howard Stitzel was the
- 33:59engineer for the Detroit Tigers for how many
- 34:01years, Howard? 27 years. He was the engineer
- 34:04for Marconi. What are you talking about? Here's
- 34:08the stretch. Look to first base. 2 -0 pitch.
- 34:11Trammell hits it hard up the middle. Verizer
- 34:12near the bag. Goes over. Steps on second. Throws
- 34:15the first double play. No runs and a hit with
- 34:18nobody left. At the end of two, it is Detroit
- 34:211, Cleveland nothing. About time you got here.
- 34:28Can't lay another foot in track till we unload
- 34:30your flat cars. Help yourself. And there's a
- 34:32mail pouch for you back in the caboose. Oh, that'll
- 34:34have my tobacco in it. Hank, tell the men I got
- 34:36some real fine leaf tobacco for chewing. Came
- 34:38in the mail pouch. The men who want to share
- 34:41line up at the caboose. You others, get these
- 34:43barrels of spice off the platform. The story
- 34:46of a great American tradition, Mail Pouch chewing
- 34:48tobacco. Mail Pouch was America's first brand
- 34:51of leaf tobacco, and it's been pleasing men ever
- 34:53since. That's because Mail Pouch has its own
- 34:56special one -of -a -kind flavor that comes from
- 34:58over 90 years' experience in giving tobacco chewers
- 35:01what they want. A clean, fresh taste that's not
- 35:04too strong, but isn't too sweet either. a flavor
- 35:07that really lasts and satisfies a man all day
- 35:10long. So if you haven't tried Mail Pouch lately,
- 35:12chew a few packs and taste the Mail Pouch difference.
- 35:15You'll see why it's become a tradition to chew
- 35:18Mail Pouch and treat yourself to the best. In
- 35:26the top of the third inning, Manning, Bell, and
- 35:28Grubb, the top of the Indians' order. Against
- 35:30Jack Billingham, the Tigers leading 1 -0 in the
- 35:33first inning. Ronald LaFleur single to left and
- 35:35with two outs. Kemp bashed a double to drive
- 35:38home on the floor from first base. Now it's at
- 35:42the top of the third. Manning, single left field
- 35:45to start the ball game for the Indians. They
- 35:46got him as far as second base on an error. That's
- 35:49as far as he could go in the first inning. Rick
- 35:58Manning, left hand batter. Fillingham standing
- 36:08behind the mound. I thought he was doing an Al
- 36:11Roboski there for a minute. Either that or he
- 36:13swallowed his chew. Here's the lineup first pitch
- 36:19to Manning. Fastball, strike one on the outside
- 36:21corner. I don't think he chews. Strike one pitch.
- 36:29Manning hits it hard up the middle. Whitaker
- 36:31knocks at it with the glove. Couldn't stop it.
- 36:34It got by him. And Manning should be two for
- 36:36two. Base hit for Manning. That is the Indians'
- 36:50fourth hit. Now, if our engineer was really on
- 36:52the ball, he would fix the squawk box so we could
- 36:54hear the official score from upstairs. A word
- 36:59to the Y. Here's the stretch. The pitch. Manning
- 37:04going. Bell hits the ball to third. Rodriguez
- 37:05no chance at second. Throws on over to first.
- 37:07Bell is out and a runner at second base. Very
- 37:16easily have been two had Manning not been going.
- 37:21Johnny Grubb, a line drive to the center fielder
- 37:23in the first inning of play. Detroit leads 1
- 37:30-0. They're in the top of the third inning. Now
- 37:39Urban. In terms of watching a ball game, I like
- 37:41this vantage point better than any place in baseball.
- 37:43This is one of the really nice ballparks. It's
- 37:46one of the older ones, but it's well kept. And
- 37:48I think for the fans in almost any seat, they
- 37:50sit in there very close to the action. Time called.
- 37:53And that goes doubly so for us. We're suspended
- 37:56from the facing of the upper deck. We actually
- 37:59protrude out from the upper deck. A stretch.
- 38:03Look back, pitch. That is a ball low. Ball one.
- 38:15Detroit leads 1 -0. Stretch by Bellingham. Looks
- 38:18back to Manning. 1 -0 pitch. Grubb takes. Going
- 38:20outside. Ball to 2 -0. Andre Thornton on deck.
- 38:29Tigers one run, three hits, one error. The Indians
- 38:31no runs on four base hits. A stretch. The pitch.
- 38:35And Grubb hits the ball foul to the coach's box
- 38:38at first base. Down to the bullpen. The count
- 38:40is 2 -1. Tomorrow night, 8 o 'clock, game two
- 38:46of this brief two -game set. And tomorrow night,
- 38:49for the Cleveland Indians, Dave Friesleben. And
- 38:53for the Detroit Tigers, it will be Jim Slate.
- 38:59Here's the 2 -1 pitch to Grubb. John takes a
- 39:02strike. Neha on the outside corner. Two balls,
- 39:04two strikes. Looking ahead to the Indians' homestand
- 39:07of the weekend against the White Sox. Friday
- 39:09night, Mike Proley against Rick Wise. Saturday
- 39:12night, Francisco Barrios against Mike Paxton.
- 39:14Sunday afternoon, Steve Stone against Rick Waits.
- 39:17Stretch, 2 -2, pitch to Grob. Check swing, in
- 39:21time, ball 3 -3 -2. What a tough loss that Steve
- 39:24Stone had last night. He gave up only two hits.
- 39:26One of them, the home run to Richie Zisk, and
- 39:28he lost one to nothing. Three balls, two strikes.
- 39:33One out on the top of the third. Manning at second
- 39:36base. The stretch. Payoff pitch to John. He bounces
- 39:39the ball back to the second baseman Whitaker.
- 39:41Throws to first and Manning checks in at third
- 39:43base with two outs. Andre Thornton the batter.
- 39:48He had a ground ball that went right through
- 39:50the legs of Alan Trammell, a shortstop for an
- 39:53error in the first inning. Thornton officially
- 40:020 for 1 on the night. Indians had two men on
- 40:07in the first inning, couldn't score. Had two
- 40:09hits in the second inning, and couldn't score.
- 40:11Now we have a runner at third with two outs in
- 40:13the third. Look in for the sign, and here's the
- 40:17windup and the pitch to Thornton, and a fastball,
- 40:19strike one. Every once in a while, Jack Fillingham
- 40:21can still bring that fastball, and he did right
- 40:23there. Fillingham looks into Parrish and gets
- 40:31the sign. Manning leading at third base. Billingham
- 40:37nods and then steps back. Time called for the
- 40:45moment. Now both men are set. Strike one pitch
- 40:47to Thornton. He's going to bunt. Drops it third
- 40:49base side of the mound. Here comes Manning. Pick
- 40:51up by Billingham. Throw to first base. And they
- 40:52count him by an island. Oh, is that close? Close
- 40:56play at first base, but it retires the side.
- 41:00And in the third inning, no runs. One hit and
- 41:02a man left. At the end of two and one half innings
- 41:05of play. Detroit 1, Cleveland nothing. You know,
- 41:10listening to Major League Baseball on 3WJ is
- 41:12a great way to follow the national pastime. But
- 41:14to really appreciate the game and the players'
- 41:16talents, at least once in a while you should

- 42:16Game is over in Minnesota. And the Minnesota
- 42:19Twins knocked off Kansas City 5 -1. Zahn over
- 42:22Bird. In the second game, it'll be Splittorf
- 42:26against Kurzanowski. Here in the third inning
- 42:32for the Detroit Tigers, the top of their order.
- 42:35Ron LaFleur. He got things rolling for the Tigers.
- 42:39With a hit in the first inning, eventually scored
- 42:41on a two -out double by Kemp. Wind up by David
- 42:55Clyde to the first pitch to LeFleur. It is a
- 42:57ball. Ball one. Next pitch to LeFleur. He rammed
- 43:08over Berizer's glove as he leaped up for that
- 43:10shot. In the left field, a single, and LeFleur
- 43:13is two for two. Well, they told us when we got
- 43:15here today, he is hot, and he is. Oh, the runner
- 43:20at first base. Nobody out. Four hits for the
- 43:23Tigers. He tried to punt his way out on the first
- 43:31inning and was out on a punted third strike.
- 43:38Stretch by Clyde. Look to LaFleur. Look at him
- 43:41again. And the pitch. Whitaker takes low. Ball
- 43:45one. Mentioned before that Ron LaFleur has stolen
- 43:5124 straight. Two away from the American League
- 43:55record set last year by Mitchell Page and ended,
- 43:58by the way, by the Indians. 1 -0 pitch will come
- 44:02after a throw puts LaFleur back in the bag. Cincinnati
- 44:06is tied up. Pittsburgh 2 -2 at the end of four.
- 44:11And the Dodgers have knocked out Codd in the
- 44:13fifth. Another throw to first base and LaFleur
- 44:18back easily. Home half of the third inning. The
- 44:27Tigers leading 1 -0. Look forward first base.
- 44:30Nobody out. 1 -0 count to Whitaker. Fastball.
- 44:33High ball two. Whitaker is one of these young
- 44:39fellas who had better walk into the ballpark
- 44:41with the rest of the team or they won't let him
- 44:43through the gates. Very young looking guy. 2
- 44:47-0 pitch. Fastball. Inside. Ball three. Whitaker
- 44:56is only 21 years old, but he looks like he's
- 44:58about 15. And he plays like he's been around
- 45:02for five years. Stretch, 3 -0 pitch, inside and
- 45:08high ball four. Now LaFleur goes to second base
- 45:11on a walk -over. And he plays like he's been
- 45:15around for five years. Stretch, 3 -0 pitch, inside
- 45:20and high ball four. Now LaFleur goes to second
- 45:23base on the walk to Whitaker, and now the Tigers
- 45:26have something cranked up. Second walk by Clyde
- 45:30to go with one strikeout. Rusty Staub, first
- 45:33time up, he sent Manning deep into center field
- 45:36to haul down a fly ball. Kuyper, Clyde, and Alexander
- 45:42have a conference in the mound. Staub leading
- 45:46the majors with 96 runs batted in. And as Herb
- 45:50mentioned, he will be Herb's guest tonight on
- 45:53the 10th inning show here at Tiger Stadium. Clyde
- 46:03looks in, stretches. And the pitch to Staub.
- 46:08He takes the fastball, the strike of the knees,
- 46:10strike one. Stob the batter. Steve Kemp on deck.
- 46:28Hyde looks back to the floor at second. Looks
- 46:31at him again and steps back. Stob choking that
- 46:37bat up about four inches, three and a half, four
- 46:39inches. It's a very small bat as well. Stretch.
- 46:47And Clyde with the strike one pitch to star.
- 46:50Curve is high. 1 -1. We're going to talk to him
- 46:53on the postgame show. We've already recorded
- 46:54it, and we'll be talking about the fact that
- 46:56he's a fellow who's driven in 96 runs already.
- 46:59Hit 19 home runs. He still chokes up the bat.
- 47:09The 1 -1 pitch. Dob takes one low. Gets away
- 47:11from Alexander. The runners move to second and
- 47:13third while Alexander raced over to the on -deck
- 47:15circle to pick it up. He did a great job of just
- 47:18even getting a glove on that ball. That ball
- 47:19bounced in the right -hand hitting batting box.
- 47:23Almost out of the right -handed batting box.
- 47:27The Tigers now have runners at second and third
- 47:30and nobody out. David Clyde uncorking his eighth
- 47:34wild pitch of the year. The Indians 45th and
- 47:36the bullpen for the tribe. Dan Spilner is throwing.
- 47:44Two balls, one strike. LaFleur at third, Whitaker
- 47:48at second. Nobody out. A stretch and pitch. There's
- 47:53a drive into right field. Jimmy Norris stabs
- 47:55the liner. LaFleur tags. He's coming home over
- 47:58to third base. Goes Whitaker and it's 2 -0. That
- 48:02was a sacrifice line drive. 97 runs batted in
- 48:08for Busty Staub. 2 -0 Detroit. The 8th RBI that
- 48:21Staub has had against the Indians this year.
- 48:29Brings up Steve Kemp. He doubled in the first
- 48:31Tiger run. Whitaker at third base and one out.
- 48:39Stretch by Clyde and the pitch and Kemp takes
- 48:42a strike to the knees of the outside corner.
- 48:44Strike one. Thornton, Kuyper, Verizer and Bell
- 48:48all pulled in around the edge of the infield
- 48:50grass. Stretch. Strike one pitch. That is strike
- 48:58two. 0 -2 count. Steve Kemp backing out of the
- 49:03batter's box, nodding and saying, yes, yes, yes.
- 49:05As if to say to Luciano, you're right. I don't
- 49:07know why I didn't swing. Clyde looks in and gets
- 49:12the sign. Here's the stretch. And the 0 -2 pitch
- 49:17to Kemp. Swing and a miss. Struck him out with
- 49:19a curveball. That is the second strikeout for
- 49:25David Clyde. And it brings on Lance Parrish.
- 49:29Parrish walked in the first inning of play. Dodgers
- 49:37now 5 -1 over the Phillies in the fifth. White
- 49:42Sox get a run on the first at Texas. Rangers
- 49:44are now batting Bumgarten against Alexander.
- 49:47Fastball is high to Lance Parrish, ball one.
- 49:50And Montreal has a 1 -0 lead over the Giants
- 49:53at the end of four. Dodgers could well be in
- 49:56first place by themselves when the evening is
- 49:58over. Pitch to Parrish. Low and inside. Ball
- 50:02two. 2 -0. Well, Heisel just hit number 28 and
- 50:13Yacht hit number three. And Milwaukee now in
- 50:16front 7 -0 after six of their first game. Stretch
- 50:22by Clyde. And the 2 -0 pitch. And Parrish hits
- 50:24it hard to third. Picked up by Bell. Throws across.
- 50:28Parrish is out. And the side is retired. One
- 50:31run, one hit, one walk, one wild pitch, and one
- 50:35left. At the end of three innings of play, Detroit
- 50:382, Cleveland nothing. After a long home run After
- 51:17the game is won King of Bears is waiting for
- 51:20you Anheuser -Busch, St. Louis. Now, before we
- 51:42do anything else, let's pause for station identification.
- 51:44This is the Cleveland Indians baseball network.
- 51:48This is 3WJ, Central Ohio's home in the Cleveland
- 51:52Cavaliers, Browns, and Indians. WWWJ, Johnstown.
- 52:00Hitting number four, and here's Herb's score.
- 52:02Thank you, John Hagan, everybody, for the...
- 52:05Indians, Alexander Carbo -Norris come up against
- 52:08Jack Fillingham. The Indians trail in this game
- 52:102 -0. It's Fillingham against David Clyde. Fillingham
- 52:14has surrendered four hits, but the Indians are
- 52:17not able to cross home plate yet. Gary Alexander,
- 52:27first time up, lifted a high, towering fly ball
- 52:30to right field. Caught out there by Corcoran.
- 52:40Big fella, 6 '4", 215 pounds. Inside and low
- 52:45ball one. Bellingham started his baseball career
- 52:54in 1961 with Orlando. Back in the Florida State
- 52:57League then. There's a strike over the outside
- 53:00corner knee high. First came up to the major
- 53:03leagues with the Dodgers in 1968 briefly. Went
- 53:06to Houston. arrived in Cincinnati in 1972, and
- 53:10there he had some really good years, twice won
- 53:1119 games. He was traded here to the Tigers during
- 53:21spring training this year. Ground ball, sharply
- 53:24hit, one bounce to the shortstop. Trammell, the
- 53:26long throw, they get Gary Alexander. 6 -3 on
- 53:30the out. Young Mr. Trammell can pop that baseball.
- 53:40The batter now will be the Indian designated
- 53:42hitter, Ernie Cabo. First time up, he bounced
- 53:44one right through the middle. First pitch is
- 53:53over at the knees, strike a curveball. Time call,
- 54:00they like that baseball exam, and Ron Luciano
- 54:03looks it over, says nothing wrong with it, throws
- 54:05it right back. Lined up and the pitch. Curve
- 54:19ball, this one stays high. Ball one, strike one.
- 54:23They do not post the batting averages here in
- 54:26Tiger Stadium, so they don't keep the current.
- 54:29Bernie Carbo started out hitting 262. He probably
- 54:31hit about 265. Line drive, right field, base
- 54:33hit. He waited on the curve ball and slammed
- 54:35it to right. So Bernie Carbo is two for two.
- 54:39Indians collect their fifth base hit. They have
- 54:42out -hit the Tigers now five to four, but the
- 54:44Tigers have out -run them two to nothing. Jimmy
- 54:47Norris smashed one that looked like it might
- 54:49be a base hit down the first base side. Mickey
- 54:52Stanley playing first base dove at the ball,
- 54:54grabs it. In fact, he landed right on top of
- 54:56the bag, scrambled up through to second. Carbo
- 54:58had made a turn at second. When we looked back,
- 55:01there was a shortstop with a baseball chasing
- 55:02him. Carbo now up to 271. Pitch to Jimmy, bouncing
- 55:07ball. This one goes over the head of Stanley
- 55:08into right field. Carbo to second, makes the
- 55:10turn. He'll go for third. The throw is all the
- 55:14way through and grabbed by Rodriguez off the
- 55:16bag. Holding at first is Norris with a base hit.
- 55:19At third base, Cabo with one man down. Indians
- 55:22have runners at first and at third, and here's
- 55:24Dwayne Kuyper. First time up in the game, Kuyper
- 55:28bounced the single right through the middle.
- 55:35Cabo at third, Norris at first. Here's a fellow
- 55:44who said, Ran to Detroit from Cleveland Heights
- 55:47to see the tribe and say hello. He says, I jogged
- 55:51all the way. I must have left Christmas Day or
- 55:54something. Who is this fellow? Ron Lawrence.
- 55:57I wonder if that's true. He did. Boy, that's
- 55:59something. Here's the pitcher. Bouncing ball.
- 56:06First base. Grabbed by Stanley. He has Cabo.
- 56:08Stuck off third. Running toward him. Throws to
- 56:10Rodriguez. Rodriguez now throws home. They're
- 56:13going to have Cabo. Long up. They make the tag
- 56:15a hand throw to third. And almost. Dale Norris.
- 56:19Now the Tigers were trying to time that. They
- 56:23had everybody jockeying back and forth. Hoping
- 56:25they could get Carbo running towards third. And
- 56:28also Norris coming to third. Carbo stayed in
- 56:31the rundown long enough to let Jimmy get into
- 56:33third base. So it'll be a fielder's choice. And
- 56:38it will go three. Or three to five to two. And
- 56:47on the play, Morris legs it around to third.
- 56:51And Kuyper goes to second. But now there are
- 56:54two men out. Tommy Verizon, the batter, hit a
- 56:56ground ball his first time up. And the shortstop
- 56:59grabbed and forced the runner a second on. Dillingham
- 57:04will go from the windup. Two men in scoring position.
- 57:06Two men out. Curveball slips it over, but Hive,
- 57:09all one. Wind up and the pitch. Swing and a miss
- 57:20on the slider. Frank and Wilma Hippley and Eric
- 57:25Hines here tonight. They say they're from the
- 57:27Akron area. They came over to see the Indians
- 57:29play. Pitch to Tommy. Foul back and out of play.
- 57:40Tommy came into the game with a batting average
- 57:42of 291. No home runs. 24 runs batted in. Two
- 57:52strikes on Tom. Schumann out. Indian runners
- 57:55at second and at third. They trail 2 -0 here
- 57:57in the fourth. Rick Manning's on deck, and he
- 58:01is 2 -for -2 in the game. Indians have had six
- 58:04base hits. They're trying to get their first
- 58:07run. Fillingham checking the sign with Lance
- 58:10Parrish. Wying up and the pitch. Check swings,
- 58:15like three calls. Flider over the inside corner.
- 58:18Tommy Verizon looks back to the umpire and says,
- 58:21Did I swing? And he says, No. And he points to
- 58:23home plate and says, It was over. First strikeout
- 58:27for Billingham, and he could not pick the better
- 58:29spot for himself to get it. For the Indians in
- 58:31the fourth inning, no runs. They get two more
- 58:34hits. No errors. They leave two more. They've
- 58:37now left six men in the first four innings. And
- 58:40at the middle of the fourth inning, the score.
- 58:42Tigers 2, Indians nothing. This is Dave Smith
- 58:48from Dave Smith Ford. We're over here in Pataskala,
- 58:51which is halfway between Columbus and Newark,
- 58:52on Route 16. And we will save you money on a

- 59:14us, and do your best. We will, too. What flowers
- 59:17have to say are things words just can't express.
- 59:20In times of joy or sorrow, a gift of plants or
- 59:23flowers from the Posie Pot in Johnstown is always
- 59:26perfect. At the same location for over 30 years,
- 59:29the Posie Pot at 56 East Coshocton offers the
- 59:32same friendly service generations have grown
- 59:34with and the same quality flowers and plants
- 59:37guaranteed to please. Your Visa or Master Charge
- 59:40cards are welcome and the Posie Pot also delivers.
- 59:49the fourth inning for the Tigers. Tigers leading
- 59:51two to nothing. Indians have had some scoring
- 59:53opportunities, but have not been able to get
- 59:55the base hit when they really needed it. Here's
- 59:57Rodriguez, who has flied to right his only time
- 59:59up. Swing and a miss on the curve. David Clyde
- 1:00:07with that good overhand curveball. Arulio, right
- 1:00:10-handed batter. Started out with the California
- 1:00:14Angels back several years ago. Ended up in a
- 1:00:16big trade with then Washington. Curveball too
- 1:00:21low. Came over here in a rather large steal.
- 1:00:25Not many third basemen around baseball anywhere
- 1:00:28that has a truer or stronger throwing arm than
- 1:00:31Rodriguez. One ball and a strike. Fastball, foul
- 1:00:38back. This one gets a piece of Gary Alexander.
- 1:00:41Twice he's been hit tonight. Ron Luciano umpiring
- 1:00:50his home plate. Kenny Kaiser at first. Mike Riley,
- 1:00:54the second -base umpire. Third -base umpire is
- 1:00:57Bill Haller. A wind -up and the pitch. Curveball
- 1:01:02wrapped toward the shortstop. Grabbed by Tommy
- 1:01:03Verizon. Throws across and gets it. 6 -3 on the
- 1:01:09out. One man gone. Fourth inning. Brings up Mickey
- 1:01:13Stanley. Mickey, the oldest Tiger in terms of
- 1:01:16service. He's in his 13th year in the Major League.
- 1:01:30All with the Tigers. Swing and a miss on David
- 1:01:40Clyde's curve. Strike one. Make it a night. Clyde
- 1:01:44to left field. His only time up. 6 '1", about
- 1:01:52195 pounds. Just turned 36 years old. Long drive.
- 1:02:09on mickey stanley ever since texas anything headed
- 1:02:16for the foul pole makes me nervous i should say
- 1:02:18one man down fourth inning indians on top or
- 1:02:23behind now to nothing fastball inside drives
- 1:02:27them back all one strike two david clyde cut
- 1:02:31loose with his best fastball that time We're
- 1:02:39just jolted by four runs off the bat to the Pirates.
- 1:02:43Curveball too low, 2 -2. Game was tied going
- 1:02:46into the last half of inning number five. Pirates
- 1:02:48came up with four. They now lead Cincinnati 6
- 1:02:51-2. Somebody did some damage in that inning.
- 1:02:55Bill Robinson, a three -run homer. 2 -2 pitch.
- 1:03:02Fastball strike, three -call. He buzzed it over
- 1:03:04the outside part of the plate wayside. Stanley
- 1:03:07looks at a third strike. And the third strikeout
- 1:03:10for left -handed David Clyde brings up Tim Corcoran.
- 1:03:14He laid down a perfect one single his first time
- 1:03:17up. And his batting average up over the 270 mark.
- 1:03:21By the way, I understand that Nestor Shylock
- 1:03:23now has returned to his home to recuperate from
- 1:03:26his siege in the hospital and reportedly is in
- 1:03:29fine fettle. Fastball inside. I think it nipped
- 1:03:32him. Apparently it didn't. Right around the letters.
- 1:03:40Nested left the hospital fairly early and recovering
- 1:03:44at home. And we certainly wish him the best.
- 1:03:47He is, my way of thinking, the best umpire I've
- 1:03:49seen. Curveball, strike over the outside corner.
- 1:03:53David Clyde in this inning has the best curveball
- 1:03:55he's had all game long. Looks like he's really
- 1:03:57started to get right through it. One ball and
- 1:04:00a strike. Wind up, 1 -1 pitch. Fastball, swung
- 1:04:06on a miss, blew it right by him. One ball, two
- 1:04:10strikes. Fourth inning. Tigers two, Indians nothing.
- 1:04:14Indians have six hits, the Tigers have four.
- 1:04:17Tigers single runs in the first and in the third.
- 1:04:21Swing and a miss, strike three on the fastball.
- 1:04:23David Clyde gets them down one, two, three in
- 1:04:26the fourth inning, striking out two. And he has
- 1:04:28now retired the last six men that he's faced.
- 1:04:32For the Tigers, no runs, no hits, no errors,
- 1:04:35nothing across. End of four innings in Tiger
- 1:04:38Stadium, the first of a two -game series. It's
- 1:04:41Detroit 2 and Cleveland nothing. Here's some
- 1:04:43great news for people who like to know they've

- 1:05:59Jack Billingham, Indians trail, 2 -0. Manning
- 1:06:04single to left, single right up the middle. Both
- 1:06:07times hit the ball solidly. They're playing him
- 1:06:11straight away in the outfield. The pitch, line
- 1:06:13foul, third base side, and scattering a couple
- 1:06:16of members of the ground crew sitting along the
- 1:06:18railing down near the Tiger bullpen. whipping
- 1:06:29around on top of the stadium. We can't feel much
- 1:06:31of it down here in the stadium. Curveball bouncing
- 1:06:34in front of home plate. A ball on the strike.
- 1:06:35Here in Tiger Stadium it is a completely surrounded
- 1:06:38ballpark. Double decked all the way around to
- 1:06:41the power alleys in both left center and right
- 1:06:43center. Then they have an open up a deck which
- 1:06:45they consider the bleachers. But you can watch
- 1:06:48the flags on top of this ballpark and there's
- 1:06:50a lot of wind blowing. 1 -1 pitch. Bouncing foul
- 1:06:56over near the Indian dugout this time. And again,
- 1:06:59the usher beats the bad boys to the ball. One
- 1:07:03ball, two strikes. Ground ball. Ground ball.
- 1:07:10It's Sorkin Bay side. Grabbed by Lou Whitaker.
- 1:07:12Picks it up. Throws him out. Manning shattered
- 1:07:15his bat on that one. They're not booing here.
- 1:07:18That noise from the stands. They're going, Lou,
- 1:07:21he has become quite a favorite here. One man
- 1:07:25down in the fifth inning for the Indians. And
- 1:07:27Buddy Bell, who is fouled to the right field.
- 1:07:29A good running catch by Corcoran. Grounded out
- 1:07:31to the third baseman. Buddy 0 for 2. On deck,
- 1:07:34John Grubb. Johnny's sliding that lead donut
- 1:07:37up on the barrel of the bat. Bouncing ball, shortstop
- 1:07:39side. Al Trammell has this one. Throws, he gets
- 1:07:41him. Two up, two down. This one on a 6 -3 play.
- 1:07:47Johnny Grubb is lined out to the center field.
- 1:07:50Grounded out to the second baseman. He's 0 for
- 1:07:512. Latest report from Milwaukee, six innings
- 1:07:55in their first game with Toronto. Milwaukee cruising
- 1:07:58along with a 7 -0 lead. Jantz and Heissel have
- 1:08:01home it. Heissel's home run is 28th, and Joe
- 1:08:04and I were talking between innings. That ties
- 1:08:06Jim Rice to the league lead. One try and miss,
- 1:08:10strike one. You can see Heissel's home run came
- 1:08:13with nobody on. I don't know how many RBI's that
- 1:08:17is. He's up in the 80s, though. I've got the
- 1:08:18thing somewhere found here. I've got it right
- 1:08:22here. Wind up the pitch. Low, one ball and a
- 1:08:28strike. Heisel now with 87 runs batted in, at
- 1:08:33least, because he may have had more earlier in
- 1:08:35the game. 1 -1 pitch. Fastball. It is a bit off
- 1:08:41the outside part of the plate. Two balls and
- 1:08:43a strike. Jack Fillingham, not really certain,
- 1:08:45but Pai Luciano saw that one correctly. Two balls,
- 1:08:51one strike. And the delivery. Curveball flips
- 1:08:56it over, but low. 3 -1. Dillingham has a funny
- 1:09:02little motion. Not really sidearm, but he hides
- 1:09:06the ball well. Sort of short -arms you once in
- 1:09:08a while. Bouncing ball foul to the right of home
- 1:09:12plate. Byron Luciano looks the ball over, says
- 1:09:17it's fit to use. Three balls, two strikes. Fifth
- 1:09:23inning, Indians trailing by 2 -2 -0. This afternoon
- 1:09:27in the National League, three afternoon games,
- 1:09:30a big afternoon really in baseball. St. Louis
- 1:09:34at home against Houston, lost. Houston 4 -2 over
- 1:09:36the St. Louis Cardinals. San Diego at New York,
- 1:09:39San Diego 2, the Mets 1. And Atlanta in Chicago,
- 1:09:43bomb the White, the Cubs, 9 -0. Foul ball, back
- 1:09:47above our heads to the right, upstairs. Now that's
- 1:09:49the kind, partner. It comes in this way. Get
- 1:09:52down quick. There's just one thing I want to
- 1:09:54get straight. You can call the Cubs anything
- 1:09:57you want. Good, bad, nasty. Never call them the
- 1:10:01White Sox. No? Never. No? I get very uptight
- 1:10:05when you do that. 3 -2 pitch. Hearted ball and
- 1:10:09foul just outside the line. Oh, we got a pretty
- 1:10:12good shot at that because we looked right down
- 1:10:13the first baseline. And it falls. From here,
- 1:10:17it looked like it almost went right over the
- 1:10:18first corner of first base on the home plate
- 1:10:20side. Looking all the way. Very close. Umpire
- 1:10:24down that way is Kenny Kyson. He was right behind
- 1:10:26it. Home plate umpire Ron Luciano looking also.
- 1:10:31You know, let's see. Speaking of the White Sox,
- 1:10:34they lead Texas 2 -0 at the end of an inning
- 1:10:35and a half. I wasn't speaking of the White Sox?
- 1:10:39No, no. Okay. Three balls, two strikes. Two men
- 1:10:44down on the pitch. Ground ball is sharply hit
- 1:10:47towards second baseman Whitaker. He picks it
- 1:10:49up, throws him out. And on three ground balls,
- 1:10:52the Indians are gone. One, two, three in the
- 1:10:54fifth inning. Three up, three down, nothing across.
- 1:10:57At the middle of five here in Tiger Stadium,
- 1:10:59the score, the Cleveland Indians nothing, the
- 1:11:02Detroit Tigers two. The technical rubber company

- 1:12:09of the fifth inning. It is two to nothing. The
- 1:12:12Detroit Tigers, they scored a run on the first,
- 1:12:14a run on the third, and they've made it stand
- 1:12:16up thus far. David Clyde has retired the last
- 1:12:18six men and three of those on strikeouts. And
- 1:12:20last inning, he threw the ball as well as he's
- 1:12:22thrown it in his last four or five starts. Al
- 1:12:27Trammell will come along. He is a 20 -year -old
- 1:12:31young man from San Diego, California. really
- 1:12:35a baby as far as baseball is concerned. I told
- 1:12:38you earlier that Ronald Hoff was saying that
- 1:12:40with Trammell at 20 and Whitaker at 21, he said
- 1:12:43they are the two best young second base and shortstop
- 1:12:46double play combination to come along at one
- 1:12:48time that he's ever seen in his years in baseball.
- 1:12:50That's high praise. Whitaker, of course, being
- 1:12:53considered for the rookie of the year and pretty
- 1:12:56good credentials with a batting average of 300.
- 1:12:58Al Trammell is sitting at 255 with two home runs,
- 1:13:0122 runs batted in. Hit into a double play, started
- 1:13:04by the shortstop his first time up. Right -hand
- 1:13:06batter. Pitched by David Clyde. The curve is
- 1:13:10a bunt try. Foul back strike one. Minnesota won
- 1:13:21the first game at home against Kansas City, 5
- 1:13:24-1. Second game, split off, and Krasinowski will
- 1:13:28go. One strike. Wind up in the pitch. Fastball.
- 1:13:34High fly ball. Shallow center field. Manning
- 1:13:36on the go. Still coming. Reaches out. Makes the
- 1:13:38running catch. Rick Manning eating up the ground
- 1:13:41with that speed. Trammell flies to shallow center.
- 1:13:45One gone fifth inning. Here's Ron LaFleur who
- 1:13:49is single twice the left. One a line drive over
- 1:13:54the head of Verizer. The other a sharp ground
- 1:13:57ball between Verizer and Buddy Bell. Came in
- 1:14:01hitting a 291, so he's up around the 295, 296
- 1:14:04mark. Wind up. Left -handed throw is a curve
- 1:14:10low, ball one. My partner with his trusty calculator
- 1:14:13will tell us that it is 294. Fastball too low.
- 1:14:21The floor is not that many times where it's tough
- 1:14:24to raise the average. About this time of year,
- 1:14:26you usually go up two points with a hit and down
- 1:14:28one point if you don't get a hit. Two balls,
- 1:14:31no strike. Foul back. And this one, it's Gary
- 1:14:36Alexander, and that hurt him. He is down. Umpire
- 1:14:40Luciano calling for Jimmy Warfield to come out.
- 1:14:42That got him on the left shoulder. And as you
- 1:14:44may recall, he was hit on the left shoulder about
- 1:14:47five or six days ago. And it was a point where
- 1:14:50he got it the last time. He could hardly raise
- 1:14:52that left arm. We talked about this the other
- 1:14:56day with Jeff Torborg, and now we have a little
- 1:14:58time as they're working on him. Gary down on
- 1:15:00home plate. When you talk about a catcher, and
- 1:15:03you look at his batting average or something,
- 1:15:05and see a fellow might not be hitting too high,
- 1:15:06or no matter what he's hitting, you just have
- 1:15:08to consider that hitting is a very exact science.
- 1:15:12When Paul's getting up there at 90 -plus miles
- 1:15:15an hour, you have about two -fifths of a second
- 1:15:17to react, and a catcher is always full of bruises.
- 1:15:20He gets hit on the arms, the hands, the legs,
- 1:15:22and it's got to be very difficult. They get down,
- 1:15:25they got to squat down every pitch, get up and
- 1:15:27down. It takes a lot out of them. When you've
- 1:15:29got a catcher hitting around 280, 290, you have
- 1:15:32a fellow who's done a whale of a job. 2 -2 pitch.
- 1:15:36Bounces in. This one hits Gary in the pit of
- 1:15:38the stomach. 3 -1. You remember a couple of years
- 1:15:42ago, Ray Fossey, when he had that year where
- 1:15:44he just got nailed every time he turned around?
- 1:15:45Right. His body looked like a road map by the
- 1:15:48end of the year. Yeah, he was very fair -skinned,
- 1:15:49and every time he got a bruise, he could spot
- 1:15:51it. 3 -1 pitch. Ground ball. Shortstop side.
- 1:15:55Backhanded by Verizon. He's going to have to
- 1:15:56hurry the long throw. He gets him. Good play
- 1:15:58by Tom Beriser. Oh, he had no time to waste on
- 1:16:03that one. 6 -3 on the out. LaFleur is cut down
- 1:16:06by less than a half a step. Here's Lou Whitaker.
- 1:16:12Lou has struck out, trying to bunt with two strikes
- 1:16:15and fouled it off, and then he walked. David
- 1:16:19Clyde. In the first inning, he gave up a single
- 1:16:22to LaFleur, struck out Whitaker, and he tried
- 1:16:25to bunt. Starr flied to center. And then Kemp
- 1:16:28with LaFleur running, doubled the right center,
- 1:16:30drove home LaFleur from first. Foul back on the
- 1:16:33screen. In inning number three, a single by LaFleur.
- 1:16:38Whitaker walked and a sacrifice drive by Rusty
- 1:16:45Staub after a wild pitch drove home the run.
- 1:16:47That's the way it's been ever since. Two to nothing.
- 1:16:51Down low, one ball and a strike. Lou Whitaker,
- 1:16:55left -hand batter, wind up. Line delivers. Curve.
- 1:16:58Line drive. Right pass Kuyper. Kuyper put the
- 1:17:01glove down and barely slowed it down. That's
- 1:17:04going to be a tough play to score because that
- 1:17:07was a line drive that had an overspin on and
- 1:17:10Kuyper was going to grab it with the glove palm
- 1:17:12up about a little above the knees and suddenly
- 1:17:15the ball was sinking. He tried to reverse himself.
- 1:17:17The ball hit the glove and rolled through. They'll
- 1:17:19score it an error. Whittaker safe on an error.
- 1:17:25That is the first error for the Indians. Now
- 1:17:28the error is evened up at one apiece. Here's
- 1:17:32Rusty Staub who played deep to center and lined
- 1:17:35out the center. His line drive drove in a run.
- 1:17:39Actually, fastball outside. It was a line drive
- 1:17:43to right, not center. Line smash right at the
- 1:17:46right fielder that drove home the run in the
- 1:17:48third inning. And they are playing him deep in
- 1:17:52the outfield. Ball one to him. 97 RBI is the
- 1:17:56rusty is up at the front part of the batter's
- 1:17:58box curveball drops too low little Whitaker at
- 1:18:02first a definite threat to run Whitaker on the
- 1:18:06year has stolen seven times and then caught seven
- 1:18:11times fastball strike over the outside corner
- 1:18:18two balls and a strike Kansas City scores two
- 1:18:23in the first inning of their second game with
- 1:18:24the Twins. And the Minnesota Twins fail. Steve
- 1:18:30Kemp on deck with an oversized lead donut up
- 1:18:33on the barrel of the bat. 2 -1 pitch. Bouncing
- 1:18:38ball foul over near the coaching box at first.
- 1:18:41Freddie Hatfield watches it roll by. The ball
- 1:18:44is two strikes. Two minutes down and the Tigers
- 1:18:47lead 2 -0 here in inning number five. Been a
- 1:18:50good ball game thus far. David Clyde has settled
- 1:18:54down nicely. He had retired eight men in a row
- 1:18:58before the error allowed Whitaker to reach first.
- 1:19:05Two balls, two strikes, two men out, the pitch.
- 1:19:08Ground ball, first base side, Kuyper overtires,
- 1:19:10can't get it. Around second and hanging on is
- 1:19:13little Whitaker, up with the ball quickly, Norris
- 1:19:15back to the infield. Kuyper launched himself
- 1:19:17to his left and he just couldn't reach it. Rusty
- 1:19:21Stive gets a hit. That's his first hit. The fifth
- 1:19:24hit for the Tigers, their first since the third
- 1:19:26inning. Runners at first and at second, here's
- 1:19:29Steve Kemp, who doubled home a run in the first
- 1:19:31inning. Kemp with 60 runs batted in. He struck
- 1:19:38out swinging in the third. David Clyde has had
- 1:19:46four strikeouts in the game. He's walked the
- 1:19:47pair. Whitaker, a fast man at second. Rusty Stodd,
- 1:19:52nuts to Speedy on at first. And Clyde backs off
- 1:19:57as the riser tucked in behind the runner. Lance
- 1:20:02Parrish on deck. Check to the runner at second
- 1:20:13base. Curve low, ball one. In the bullpen, we're
- 1:20:19going to get activity for the Indians. It's like
- 1:20:21Dan Spillner will get up again, and that's who
- 1:20:23it's going to be. The pitch. Ground ball to second
- 1:20:34base side. Kuypek loves it. Throws to Thornton.
- 1:20:37Side retired. In the inning for the Detroit Tigers,
- 1:20:43no runs. They have one hit. There's one Indian
- 1:20:46error. Two men are left. We have played five
- 1:20:48here in Tiger Stadium. The score. Detroit two,
- 1:20:51Cleveland nothing. Anheuser -Busch, St. Louis.
- 1:20:59Well, it's the last half of the top half inning,
- 1:21:03number six. And for Jack Fillingham, he'll be
- 1:21:06looking at Thornton, Alexander, and Carbo. Alexander's
- 1:21:09been in trouble in almost every inning. In fact,
- 1:21:12last inning was the first time he set the tribe
- 1:21:13down in order. The Indians have left six men
- 1:21:16on base. But when he has needed it, he has had
- 1:21:18it. Billingham has not walked anybody. He has
- 1:21:20struck out one. Indians with no runs, six hits
- 1:21:23and one error. The Tigers, two runs, five hits
- 1:21:28and an error. Andre Thornton has been safe on
- 1:21:34an error. Tried to punt his way on in the third
- 1:21:37inning with Manning at third. And he came within
- 1:21:39about a half a step of beating one out. Pitcher
- 1:21:41Jack Billingham just didn't nip him at first.
- 1:21:49deep in the batter's box. The wind -up, Billingham's
- 1:21:51pitch is a slider breaking low and away. Ball
- 1:21:53one. On deck, Gary Alexander has that donut up
- 1:21:58on the bat. He is really whipping it around.
- 1:22:02Down low. 2 -0. Talk about a very exuberant young
- 1:22:07man. That's Gary Alexander. He's not loud or
- 1:22:09noisy. Talk to him about baseball or anything
- 1:22:13for that matter. He just has a lot of enthusiasm.
- 1:22:15I guess a lot of joy out of life. 2 -0 pitch.
- 1:22:20Ground ball, hard hit. Backhanded by Rodriguez,
- 1:22:23the third. Oh, he gets him. When you were a youngster
- 1:22:27and used to play and somebody would make a play
- 1:22:29like that, you'd always say, well, look what
- 1:22:30I found. And that's exactly what that was. A
- 1:22:33sharply hit ground ball to the right or the foul
- 1:22:36line side. Rodriguez just stuck his hand across,
- 1:22:39backhanded, and there it was. He's a pretty good
- 1:22:42third baseman. That's five minutes in a row,
- 1:22:47six minutes in a row, polished off by Billingham.
- 1:22:51And on the six outs, five of them have been ground
- 1:22:54balls and won a strikeout. Here's Gary Alexander,
- 1:22:57has flied to right, grounded the short. And on
- 1:23:00his ground ball, the short, it was a smash to
- 1:23:02the right of Trammell. Trammell backhanded it
- 1:23:05to him out. Wind up. Billingham throws the curve.
- 1:23:11It's bounced foul past Joe Nostick in the coaching
- 1:23:13box. Indians are on the road again. tomorrow
- 1:23:14night here in Tiger Stadium, but they will return
- 1:23:16to the Cleveland Stadium on Friday night, Saturday
- 1:23:19night, and there's an afternoon game on Sunday
- 1:23:21against the Chicago White Sox. See Larry Doby
- 1:23:24and his team come in. First time we've seen Larry
- 1:23:26since he's a manager. On Friday afternoon, big
- 1:23:29doings at the Boncourt Hotel. We'll tell you
- 1:23:31about that as we get this pitch in. Fastball
- 1:23:35missed low. Ball won on a strike. Buddy Bell
- 1:23:38will be honored by the Wahoo Club at the Boncourt
- 1:23:41Hotel Friday at noon. Buddy. He'll be joined
- 1:23:45by his co -captain on the Indians, Dwayne Kuyper.
- 1:23:481 -1 pitch. Fastball over the inside corner strike.
- 1:23:51But he only needs 23 hits to get to the 1 ,000
- 1:23:54mark, and he'll be one of the younger players
- 1:23:56to reach that mark of 1 ,000 hits. Certainly
- 1:23:59the fine years he's had with the Tribe deserve
- 1:24:01a good showing at that Wild Club luncheon on
- 1:24:03Friday. It's open to the public. If you want
- 1:24:05some information on it, tickets and so forth,
- 1:24:08861 -1200. They'll be happy to take care of you.
- 1:24:11Time called. Ron Luciano leaps out in front of
- 1:24:14home plate, says don't throw. Incidentally, the
- 1:24:17master of ceremonies at that luncheon will be
- 1:24:20Harry Jones, the public relations director of
- 1:24:22the Indians. I talked to Harry today, and Harry
- 1:24:24tells me that they really have a very impressive
- 1:24:26guest list lined up, and it promises to be quite
- 1:24:28a show. One -two pitch, high, high, fly ball,
- 1:24:33left field. Going back, Kemp at the edge of the
- 1:24:35warning pad. Now a few steps to his left, he
- 1:24:37puts it away. That ball was at a mile high. Two
- 1:24:44men gone in the sixth inning. And that'll bring
- 1:24:47along Bernie Carbo. He is that. Hits his first
- 1:24:49two times up. Single up the middle. Line the
- 1:24:51single to right. Two for two. Billingham looking
- 1:25:02around, waiting for Kemp to get back in position.
- 1:25:06Two men down. Tigers lead 2 -0. A swing and a
- 1:25:08miss on a sinking fastball. Carbo has... asking
- 1:25:14that the home plate umpire examine the baseball.
- 1:25:16Ron Luciano obliges, says, I don't see anything
- 1:25:19wrong, shrugs his shoulders, walks back to home
- 1:25:22plate. We've talked about this before. Ron Luciano
- 1:25:25is a devotee of Shakespeare, and occasionally
- 1:25:30he can put on a performance of his own. Fastball
- 1:25:35missed outside. Also a bird watcher. That's right.
- 1:25:39You didn't know that? He's in the right league
- 1:25:42for it. Well, the birds aren't as disabled as
- 1:25:45for the rest of the year. 1 -1 pitch. Bouncing
- 1:25:47ball. First base side. Grabbed by the first baseman,
- 1:25:50Mickey Stanley. Runs to the bag. Gets there ahead
- 1:25:53of Carbo. Second straight inning. Indians have
- 1:25:55been retired. 1 -2 -3. At the middle of six here
- 1:25:59in Tagus Stadium. The score. Tagus 2. Indians
- 1:26:02nothing. Here's some great news for people who

- 1:27:07the latter half of inning number six. The Tigers
- 1:27:09holding on to a 2 -0 lead. Thus far, Jack Fillingham
- 1:27:13has made it stand up for David Clyde. He has
- 1:27:16pitched extremely well. It'll be Lance Parrish,
- 1:27:23Aurelio Rodriguez, and then Mickey Stanley. Three
- 1:27:26right -hand batters coming up against the lefty,
- 1:27:28David Clyde. Parrish has walked. He is grounded
- 1:27:33to third. Parrish, 6 '3", about 195 pounds, from
- 1:27:40Diamond Bar, California. Fastball low. Parrish
- 1:27:49just 22 years old. Tigers have some really fine
- 1:27:53young ballplayers. Ball one. Parrish wears number
- 1:27:5713 on his white Tiger uniform. Curveball drops
- 1:28:01to... Slow 2 -0. 15 ,819 here in Tiger Stadium.
- 1:28:12Swing and a miss on the fastball down around
- 1:28:14the knee. Tiger home attendance tonight with
- 1:28:19the 15 ,000 puts them just under 1 ,300 ,000.
- 1:28:23About 1 ,000 shy of that. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:28:32Wind up by David Clyde. Swing and a miss. Fastball,
- 1:28:35pumped it by him. David with that good fastball.
- 1:28:42He really popped that one. Last three innings,
- 1:28:48David Clyde fits as well as he has in the last
- 1:28:51month. David Clyde fits as well as he has in
- 1:28:55the last month. He's really throwing extremely
- 1:28:57well. Fastball, strike three, called, and he
- 1:29:00knew it. He's fired it by Anthony. Catcher of
- 1:29:05the Tigers turns and drives away. Five strikeouts
- 1:29:08recorded by David Clyde. The matter now is the
- 1:29:15third baseman, Aurelio Rodriguez. He flies to
- 1:29:17right. He has grounded the short. Open two. Rodriguez.
- 1:29:26Lightly closed in. Curves too low. Ball one.
- 1:29:34Pirates picked up another run in the sixth inning.
- 1:29:37They lead Cincinnati now 7 -2. And the Pirates
- 1:29:41are batting in the last half of the seventh.
- 1:29:47Some game going in Montreal tonight. Fastball.
- 1:29:53Foul back. This one hits. Gary Alexander on the
- 1:29:57right foot. Oh, man. Is he taking a beating tonight?
- 1:30:00That San Francisco -Montreal game, they've gone
- 1:30:02to the top half of inning number eight. Montreal
- 1:30:05leading 1 -0. Vida Blue and Woody Freeman hooked
- 1:30:08up. Vida Blue's 16 -5 on the year. Frank Deneb
- 1:30:14won last night, so did Ron Guidry. Yankee left
- 1:30:18-hander became the first 17 -game winner in baseball
- 1:30:21this year, and he is leading the league in strikeouts.
- 1:30:25He's ahead of Nolan Ryan. He also pitched his
- 1:30:27sixth shutout. One ball and a strike. Dodgers
- 1:30:33leading the Phillies 5 -1, and they are in the
- 1:30:35ninth. Dodgers batting. Ball one, strike one.
- 1:30:41A Rulio Rodriguez. Wind up and the pitch. Curve,
- 1:30:48bounce forward short. Reiser comes on, gets a
- 1:30:50big hop, throws, gets him. 6 -3 on the out at
- 1:30:54first base. There are two men gone in the sixth
- 1:30:58inning, and here is Mickey Stanley. Mickey 0
- 1:31:01for 2 in the game. Last time up, called on a
- 1:31:03strike. Mickey picking up some dirt. Home plate.
- 1:31:11Banner's box, flipping it out. David Clyde right
- 1:31:14back up on top. There's a rosin stack behind
- 1:31:16the mound. Neither pitch side. I think it's gone
- 1:31:17to that rosin once. Tim Corcoran on deck. Two
- 1:31:27men out in the sixth. Tigers lead 2 -0. Check
- 1:31:29swing. Did he go around? Yes, he did to Zumpai
- 1:31:31Kaiser from first base. Mickey Stanley looking
- 1:31:34down at Ken Kaiser with less than affection.
- 1:31:38The fans just found out that they made that a
- 1:31:40strike. And they are not happy. Strike one. David
- 1:31:47Clyde working on Mickey Stanley. Tigers lead
- 1:31:50the Indians 2 -0. We are in the last of six here
- 1:31:53at Tiger Stadium. Ground ball. Third base side.
- 1:31:58Buddy to his right. Spears it. Throws. He gets
- 1:32:00them. One, two, three. David Clyde has polished
- 1:32:04off the Tigers in the sixth. Nothing across.
- 1:32:07And we go now into the seventh inning here at
- 1:32:09Tiger Stadium. The score, the Tigers two, the
- 1:32:12Indians nothing. You know, listening to Major

- 1:33:28then Dwayne Kuyper, and Tom Verizer. 7 -8 -9
- 1:33:32in the tribe order. Detroit with a 2 -0 lead.
- 1:33:35Picked up a run on the first on a single by LaPorte
- 1:33:37and a double by Kemp. Added a run on the third
- 1:33:40on a single by LaPorte. A walk, a wild pitch,
- 1:33:43and Staub sacrificed line drive fly ball to right.
- 1:33:49Jimmy Norris. Bob's to the first. Baseman Stanley
- 1:33:52made a spectacular play. Fell in the bag for
- 1:33:54one out. Picked himself up. Discovered Carbo
- 1:33:56wandering around off second base and turned it
- 1:33:58into a double play. Pitched to Norris. Pop foul.
- 1:34:00Out of play left side. Rodriguez charging over
- 1:34:03for this one. Lynn blew that one back toward
- 1:34:06the field, but it was still about five rows deep.
- 1:34:07Strike one. Stanley at first. Whitaker at second.
- 1:34:12Trammell at short. Rodriguez at third. Kemp in
- 1:34:15left. Lepore in center. Corcoran in right, Parrish
- 1:34:18catching, and Jack Fillingham on the mound. Over
- 1:34:19the first six innings, Fillingham has given up
- 1:34:21six base hits, struck out one, and has not walked
- 1:34:24anyone. Wind up, strike one pitch, Norris takes
- 1:34:27strike two. Norris in the fourth inning bounced
- 1:34:30a single over the first baseman's head into right
- 1:34:32field. Jimmy one for two on the night. Fillingham
- 1:34:36with the 0 -2 pitch. Norris takes low and outside,
- 1:34:38one ball, two strikes. Have a nice note here
- 1:34:41from a former Clevelander, Pat O 'Neill. Wants
- 1:34:44to be remembered to all friends and relatives
- 1:34:46back in Cleveland. He now works for Pro Sports
- 1:34:48Publications here in Detroit. Pitch is low. Two
- 1:34:53balls, two strikes. Top of the seventh. Detroit,
- 1:34:58two runs, five hits, one error. Cleveland, no
- 1:35:00runs, six hits, and one error. Billingham all
- 1:35:08set. Here's the 2 -2 pitch to Norris. Kim takes
- 1:35:10outside. Full count of 3 -2. Earlier today, the
- 1:35:14Detroit Tigers placed right -hand relief pitcher
- 1:35:17Steve Foucault on waivers. He was claimed by
- 1:35:20the Kansas City Royals, and the Tigers have now
- 1:35:24called up Dave Tobik from Evansville. Pitch,
- 1:35:29high fly ball, short left field, trammel going
- 1:35:32back, shortstop in short left field, and makes
- 1:35:34the catch. Norris pops to the shortstop, and
- 1:35:37there's one out of the seventh inning. Dwayne
- 1:35:42Kuyper has singled to the second baseman and
- 1:35:44been saved for the fielder's choice. Dwayne coming
- 1:35:53off that bad knee. Still has the knee, but he's
- 1:35:55back in the lineup tonight. Going to give it
- 1:36:00a go, take that knee as far as it'll take him.
- 1:36:03There's a high fly ball to left field. Kemp coming
- 1:36:05in, getting under the ball, and makes the catch
- 1:36:08to us. Well, what we said about Billingham has
- 1:36:13evidently proven true again. If you don't get
- 1:36:17him early, he's going to get you. Indians had
- 1:36:20two on in the first, two hits in the second.
- 1:36:22Another man on in the third. Had two more hits
- 1:36:25in the fourth. Did not score against Billingham,
- 1:36:28and he has now wiped out the last nine men in
- 1:36:32a row. Tom Berizer, the batter. Tommy takes inside
- 1:36:35ball one. Tom has been safe on a fielder's choice
- 1:36:37and called out on strikes. Billingham winds up.
- 1:36:43Here's the 1 -0 pitch. Reiser takes the fastball,
- 1:36:46though. Ball two. Rocky Calabito coaching at
- 1:36:49first, John Ossock at third. Billingham turns,
- 1:36:53walks behind the mound. Staring down at the ground,
- 1:36:58flexes his right arm, turns and comes back up
- 1:37:00on top of the hill. He's done that two or three
- 1:37:02times tonight, it seems. So, occasionally he
- 1:37:06wants to regroup, so he goes back behind the
- 1:37:09mound. Not with the drama of Roboski. But with
- 1:37:11the same intent, pitch is high, ball three, 3
- 1:37:14-0. Rick Manning on deck. Here comes the 3 -0
- 1:37:21pitch to Verizer, and Tommy takes a strike. Below
- 1:37:24the belt on the inside corner, 3 -1. Wind up
- 1:37:31by Bellingham, and the 3 -1 pitch to Verizer
- 1:37:32chops the ball down the third baseline. Glove
- 1:37:34foul of the bag, throw across, but it's a foul
- 1:37:37ball, and the count is 3 -2, and Verizer will
- 1:37:39come back. Kaiser pops a fly ball into center
- 1:38:04field. Coming in to get it is LaFleur. He does,
- 1:38:07and the sides retire. Three up, three down. At
- 1:38:10the end of six and one -half innings of play,
- 1:38:13it is Detroit 2, Cleveland nothing. This is Dave
- 1:38:20Smith from Dave Smith Ford. We're over here in

- 1:38:56you believe you understand what you think I said,

- 1:39:14USDA, Washington, D .C., 20250. Or ask your travel
- 1:39:17agent. and Corcoran Trammell on the floor against
- 1:39:23David Clyde. Detroit leading 2 -0. Corcoran,
- 1:39:35left -hand batting right fielder, had a fun single
- 1:39:37the first time up and then was doubled up on
- 1:39:40a ground ball to the shortstop. And he struck
- 1:39:42out in the fourth inning. Over the first six
- 1:39:45innings, David Clyde has given up two runs, five
- 1:39:47hits, struck out, five walked, two thrown, one
- 1:39:49wild pitch. Wind up. And the first pitch to Corcoran.
- 1:39:56Line drive. Right field. Norris coming in. Reaches
- 1:39:59out and grabs that ball. Corcoran is away. And
- 1:40:03there's one down on the seventh inning of play.
- 1:40:05Trammell with that ground ball to shorten. A
- 1:40:07pop fly ball to center field. 0 for 2 on the
- 1:40:09ninth. Defensively, it started at first. Kuyper
- 1:40:13at second. Verizer at short. Bell at third. Grubbin
- 1:40:15left. Manning in center. Norris at right. Alexander
- 1:40:18catching. And David Clyde at the mound. Tigers
- 1:40:21with a run on the first and a run in the third.
- 1:40:23Two to nothing. Tigers are now batting in the
- 1:40:25seventh inning. Here's the pitch. Trammell takes
- 1:40:32strike at the knees. David Clyde has given up
- 1:40:34just one hit since the third inning. Time call.
- 1:40:41Trammell steps back. Here's the strike one pitch
- 1:40:49to Trammell. Fast ball, low. One ball, one strike.
- 1:41:041 -1 pitch. Trammell takes strike two to the
- 1:41:07inside corner. Freddie Hetfield coaching at first
- 1:41:13base. Dick Krasuski at third. Side shakes his
- 1:41:19head, then winds up. Here comes the one -two
- 1:41:21pitch. Trammell drives one down the left field
- 1:41:23line. This is going to be trouble. Into the corner,
- 1:41:26bounces up against the wall. Trammell's taken
- 1:41:28to second base. Rounds second and hangs on with
- 1:41:30a double. Alan Trammell doubles with one out
- 1:41:33of the seven. Indians will not play him the bullet
- 1:41:36ball, and he jerks it down the left field line.
- 1:41:42Six hits off Clyde, evening the hits between
- 1:41:44the two clubs at six each way. Bullpen action.
- 1:41:48Don Hood is trotting down there. Ron LaFleur
- 1:41:53has singled twice, scored twice, bounced a short
- 1:41:57once. Verizer got him on a fine play the last
- 1:41:59time up. Stretch by Clyde. Look back to Trammell.
- 1:42:06And the pitch to LaFleur. Outside, ball one.
- 1:42:09Lou Whitaker on deck. inside and the count is
- 1:42:232 -0. Alexander trots to the mound to have a
- 1:42:28little chat with David Clyde. The moment LaFleur
- 1:42:38hitting 293. And he has collected 11 hits and
- 1:42:4333 at -bats against Cleveland. Don't need the
- 1:42:45computer for that. Too bad. 333. gets the side.
- 1:42:59A stretch. 2 -0 pitch. LaFleur swing and a miss.
- 1:43:03Ball rolls behind the plate. Picked up by Alexander.
- 1:43:06Trammell not sure whether it was foul tipped.
- 1:43:08Did not go to third base. At first he couldn't
- 1:43:10find the ball. He knew that Alexander had lost
- 1:43:14it somewhere but he thought it might have been
- 1:43:15down right between his feet. Rolled behind him
- 1:43:17by the time Trammell thought he couldn't move.
- 1:43:28Two on the count. Cramer leading at second base.
- 1:43:44The pitch is outside. Free ball. Left -hander
- 1:43:57and a right -hander in the Indians' bullpen.
- 1:43:59Stretch. And here comes the 3 -1 pitch to LaFleur.
- 1:44:03Strike two. Full count. Good curveball. That's
- 1:44:08what makes hitting tough. You've got a fella
- 1:44:10that's 3 -1. You look like you might be able
- 1:44:12to get a pitch you can pick on and come through
- 1:44:14with a good curveball like that. The stretch
- 1:44:17by Clyde. Look back to Trammell at second. One
- 1:44:21out. 3 -2 pitch to Ron LaFleur. Swing and a miss,
- 1:44:23and the curveball struck him out. Clyde with
- 1:44:28his sixth strikeout of the night. That is his
- 1:44:3560th strikeout of the year. Lou Whitaker has
- 1:44:38struck out trying to bunt. That was in the first
- 1:44:41inning. He walked to the third. The safe on Kuyper's
- 1:44:44error on a sinking line drive in the fifth. The
- 1:44:53stretch by Clyde. Look back to Trammell. And
- 1:44:57the first pitch to the left -hand batter, and
- 1:44:58Whitaker takes low and outside. Ball one. Rusty
- 1:45:04Staub on deck. RBI's tonight have been by Staub
- 1:45:08is 97th and Kemp is 60th. On both occasions,
- 1:45:11they drove home around to the floor. A stretch.
- 1:45:17And the pitch. Whitaker hits a very high fly
- 1:45:19ball down the left field line. Grubb coming hard
- 1:45:21toward the foul line into the bullpen. Running
- 1:45:23catch in foul ground to retire the Suns. Now
- 1:45:27runs and a hit with a man left at second base.
- 1:45:30And at the end of seven innings of play, it is
- 1:45:32still Detroit 2, Cleveland nothing. This is Dave
- 1:45:38Smith from Dave Smith Ford. We're over here in
- 1:45:40Pataskala, which is halfway between Columbus
- 1:45:42and Newark, on Route 16. and we will save you
- 1:45:47money on a new Ford, or as you've heard me say
- 1:45:49many times, I'll buy you two fake dinners. Now,
- 1:45:52right now, we're having our clearance sale, summer,

- 1:45:5678th, get ready for the 79th. So come on over.
- 1:45:59We will save you money on a new car. We need
- 1:46:01used cars. We have a good selection. So come
- 1:46:04on over and see us, and do your best. We will,
- 1:46:06too. car drivers, baseball players, football
- 1:46:26players. Professionals like these face danger
- 1:46:31every day, and they all wear helmets for protection.
- 1:46:34Motorcycle riders are pros, too. That's why they
- 1:46:37wear helmets. They won't let a head injury take
- 1:46:39them out of the action. For more information
- 1:46:41on motorcycle safety, write the Ohio Department
- 1:46:44of Highway Safety, Columbus, Ohio, 43205. Wind
- 1:47:16up by Billingham. First pitch to Manning and
- 1:47:17Rick takes low and outside. Ball one. Manning
- 1:47:20a single twice in three trips. Hit to left in
- 1:47:23the first to center field in the third off Whitaker's
- 1:47:26glove. Bounce to the second baseman in the fifth.
- 1:47:28Pitch to Manning is a strike. Knee high on the
- 1:47:31outside corner. A ball and a strike. Billingham
- 1:47:39ready with a one -one pitch to Manning. Rick
- 1:47:41takes low and outside. The count is two and one.
- 1:48:08the left into the upper deck and that takes the
- 1:48:13count to two balls two strikes wind up to to
- 1:48:24pitch Manny check swing pitch a touch outside
- 1:48:27full count of three and two Third base side,
- 1:48:42backhanded by Rodriguez. Long throw. He's out
- 1:48:45at first by an island. Tom Morgan, Calivator,
- 1:48:48will argue with Ken Kaiser that Stanley was not
- 1:48:51on the bag when he took the throw. Kaiser gives
- 1:48:54you that great big wind -up motion when he calls
- 1:48:57a man out, and they are arguing that he was so
- 1:48:59busy winding up to call the man out, he didn't
- 1:49:01even see whether or not Stanley was on the bag
- 1:49:03or not. But Manning is out, and that's the way
- 1:49:05it's going to stand. One out, nobody out on the
- 1:49:10earth. Bell is fouled to right. Bounce to third.
- 1:49:13Bounce to the shortstop. Billingham. Ready to
- 1:49:30work to the right -hand batter. Wind up and the
- 1:49:35pitch. High and inside. Ball one. He has knocked
- 1:49:43off Toronto in their first game by a score of
- 1:49:488 -1. Tough defense as the Indians. Johnny Grubb
- 1:50:25is lined to center, bounced to second, and again
- 1:50:27to second base. 0 -3 on the night. First pitch
- 1:50:39to John is a fastball. Strike of the knees. Strike
- 1:50:42one. Thirteen men in a row polished off by Jack
- 1:50:44Fillingham with the help of his defense. Pitch
- 1:50:50to John is low again, and the ball on strike
- 1:50:52one. Mike Caldwell is now a 15 -game winner for
- 1:50:59Milwaukee. Pitch to Grubb outside. Two balls
- 1:51:02and a strike. Wind up. 2 -1 pitch. Hit hard off
- 1:51:18the glove of the pitcher. Deflected to win. Got
- 1:51:30some leather on, deflected over to Whitaker,
- 1:51:32and he made the play. Three up, three down. The
- 1:51:35end of seven and one half innings of play. The
- 1:51:37score, the Tigers two, the Indians nothing. Hey,
- 1:52:26that's right. Nothing goes with that special
- 1:52:29time you call yours like the clean, fresh taste
- 1:52:32of Budweiser. Home half of the eighth inning,
- 1:52:45Staub, Kemp, and Parrish against David Clyde.
- 1:52:49Then we find out what happens to Rusty Staub.
- 1:52:52We'll get a station break. Rusty right now is
- 1:52:54stepping in. He has flied to center and has sacrificed
- 1:52:59line drive to the right fielder and singled.
- 1:53:05And that takes... Strike one, Nehi on the inside
- 1:53:08corner. White Sox 2, Texas 1 in the fifth at
- 1:53:11Arlington. Here's the strike one pitch to Staub.
- 1:53:14He takes low. One ball, one strike. Down in the
- 1:53:17bullpen, a left -hander, Ed Glynn, warming up.
- 1:53:27Montreal just knocked off the Giants, and the
- 1:53:29Dodgers defeated Philadelphia. The Dodgers are
- 1:53:32in first by a game. Pitch curve ball rammed right
- 1:53:35over Freddie Hatfield's head. The first base
- 1:53:37coach and bangs off the wall by the bullpen.
- 1:53:39One ball, two strikes. Staub ready again. One
- 1:53:46ball, two strikes. And Clyde's pitch. Staub pops
- 1:53:50it up. Foul. First base side. Back goes Thornton
- 1:53:53toward the bullpen. Fell on the grass. Makes
- 1:53:56the catch. One out and we pause for station identification.
- 1:54:00This is the Cleveland Indians baseball network.
- 1:54:05You know, listening to Major League Baseball
- 1:54:07on 3WJ is a great way to follow the national
- 1:54:09pastime, but to really appreciate the game and
- 1:54:11the players' talent... This is 3WJ, Central Ohio's
- 1:54:17home, and the Cleveland Cavaliers, Browns, and
- 1:54:19Indians. WWWJ, Johnstown. Driving around on the
- 1:54:25first inning, struck out in the third, bounced
- 1:54:27the second to the fifth. Back to the screen.
- 1:54:40Ball one. Woody Freiman threw a one -hitter at
- 1:54:50the Giants tonight. Vida Blue threw a three -hitter
- 1:54:53at Montreal. Wind up on the pitch. Kemp pops
- 1:54:59a foul back upstairs. Headed for the roof for
- 1:55:02the counters. Even at a ball, but a strike. to
- 1:55:29nothing. One out and nobody on. Pitch is low.
- 1:55:38He looked as though he was going to butter the
- 1:55:40ball but got the bat out of there in time. 2
- 1:55:42-1 the count. Wind up by David Clyde and the
- 1:55:552 -1 pitch. Kemp takes low and outside. And that
- 1:55:58takes the count to 3 -1. Here comes the 3 -1
- 1:56:09offering to the left -hand batter. And Kemp wraps
- 1:56:11the ball foul down the first baseline. Gloved
- 1:56:13by Thornton in foul ground. And it's a full count
- 1:56:16of 3 -2. Pittsburgh just hit the Reds with four
- 1:56:20more in the seventh. And they now lead Cincinnati
- 1:56:2211 -2 in the eighth inning of play. Wind up in
- 1:56:33the pitch to Kemp. Hits hard. Kuiper can't get
- 1:56:35it. It's five in the right field. That was a
- 1:56:38bullet. Nice smash into right. That is the seventh
- 1:56:45hit off David Clyde. Minnesota has battled back
- 1:56:49to tie up Kansas City 2 -2 after three of their
- 1:56:52second game. Minnesota beat them in the first
- 1:56:54game 5 -1. David Clyde. Look to first. And the
- 1:57:07pitch. High drive. Center field. Manning galloping
- 1:57:10back. Still going back. Still going back on the
- 1:57:13warning path. Holds it down. Parrish with a long
- 1:57:21drive to center field. Two outs. That was really
- 1:57:29posted. He grabbed it right in front of that
- 1:57:30415 sign. In the bullpen for the Indians, Spillner
- 1:57:49and the hood again. A stretch in the pitch, and
- 1:57:56Rodriguez chops the ball toward third. Bell comes
- 1:57:59in, grabs another run, throws across, got him
- 1:58:01to retire this time. Eighth inning of play for
- 1:58:05the Tigers. No runs and a hit with a man left.
- 1:58:07At the end of eight, Detroit 2, Cleveland nothing.
- 1:58:12The day is done. It's time to let it go. It's
- 1:58:19the moment to... no matter what you do no matter
- 1:58:39when or where you know a glass of blood is like
- 1:59:10Bush St. Louis. is up in the bullpen for the
- 1:59:54Tigers. Wind up first pitch to Andre. Outside,
- 1:59:56ball one. Thornton, safe on an error. Tried to
- 1:59:59put his way on with a squeeze and narrowly missed
- 2:00:01it. And then bounced to third in the sixth and
- 2:00:04a good play by Rodriguez. The pitch, Thornton
- 2:00:07hits a shot into left field. It's going to drop
- 2:00:09for a hit. Kept over, picks it up, and Thornton
- 2:00:13is on with a leadoff single in the ninth inning
- 2:00:15of play. That break is swing of 14 in a row,
- 2:00:18polished off by the right -hander, Jack Billingham.
- 2:00:22Seven Indian heads. Fourteen in a row. Gary Alexander
- 2:00:33has flied to right, bounced to short, and flied
- 2:00:35to left. Cillingham will go to work from the
- 2:00:45stretch for the first time in some time. baseman
- 2:00:51Mickey Stanley telling Billingham he will not
- 2:00:53cover at first base with Thornton. The stretch.
- 2:00:59The pitch. High fly ball to short right. Corcoran
- 2:01:03coming in under the ball and makes the catch.
- 2:01:06That's one out. Alexander for that high fly ball
- 2:01:10to right. Bernie Carbo is single to center, single
- 2:01:14to right and bounce to the first baseman. The
- 2:01:27Indians have a runner on. Killingham, the stretch,
- 2:01:39the pitch. Carbo takes the fastball, though.
- 2:01:42Ball one. Carbo takes again low. Ball two, 2
- 2:01:58-0. Thornton at first base with one out of the
- 2:02:13ninth inning. Carbo hitting 270. Stretch, pitch.
- 2:02:19Ernie takes low and outside. Ball three, 3 -0.
- 2:02:27for the Indians. Half of the night. One out,
- 2:02:30one on. And the Tigers leading 2 -0. They picked
- 2:02:32up a run in the first and one more in the third.
- 2:02:42Look in for the sign. Right -hander Billingham
- 2:02:46against the left -hander Bernie Carbo. 3 -0 pitch.
- 2:02:49Bernie takes a strike. 3 -1. Billingham has not
- 2:02:52walked about it tonight. He's been behind very
- 2:02:54few of them. is in the bullpen. Pitch to Burney.
- 2:03:05Line drive, left field. Kemp coming over. Makes
- 2:03:08the catch. Two outs. Well, he hit it right on
- 2:03:14the nose to left field. When it first left the
- 2:03:16bat, it looked like it might be in there, but
- 2:03:18it didn't slice very much, and Kemp was playing
- 2:03:20over, and he got over there quickly. Jim Norris,
- 2:03:23the last man to keep it alive. He is bounced
- 2:03:27to first on a super play by Stanley. Bounced
- 2:03:30a hit over Stanley's head into right field and
- 2:03:32then popped up to the shortstop of the seven.
- 2:03:37Two to nothing, Detroit. Two outs and a man on
- 2:03:40in the ninth. Pitch to Jimmy Norris. He's low.
- 2:03:47Ball one. John Hiller staying ready in the bullpen.
- 2:03:59Norris, a strike at the knees. One ball, one
- 2:04:01strike. Fillingham keeping that ball right out
- 2:04:03over the outside part of the plate. Thinking
- 2:04:06that Norris will be trying to pull one. He's
- 2:04:08going to try and prevent him from doing that.
- 2:04:12The pitch. That is a strike at the knees. One
- 2:04:15ball, two strikes. Rolled in the slider, and
- 2:04:17that time moved it in on his hand. Fillingham
- 2:04:24has really done an artistic job here tonight.
- 2:04:33Norris takes a good stop by Parrish and a ball
- 2:04:35that bounced in. 2 -2 count. Bellingham again
- 2:04:48looks. Taking a lot of time with the game on
- 2:04:54the line here on the ninth. The pitch to Norris.
- 2:05:12count on Jimmy Norris. Killer in the bullpen.
- 2:05:15The stretch. Here's the payoff pitch, and a bouncing
- 2:05:20ball back to Whitaker. Second baseman throws
- 2:05:22the game. Final score, the Detroit Tigers 2,
- 2:05:27the Indians nothing. We'll start the wrap -up
- 2:05:32after a moment. It's Trader John's Traveling
- 2:05:46Emporium, the general store on wheels. Trader
- 2:05:48John's wagon has everything and the best of everything.
- 2:05:51Just smell this soap, little lady. And for you,
- 2:05:54sir, hand tools, handguns, and the finest fresh
- 2:05:57chewing tobacco. That'll be mail pouch chewing
- 2:05:59tobacco, gentlemen. The story of a great American
- 2:06:02tradition, Mail Pouch chewing tobacco. Mail Pouch
- 2:06:05was America's first brand of leaf tobacco, and
- 2:06:08it's been pleasing men ever since. That's because
- 2:06:10Mail Pouch has its own special, one -of -a -kind
- 2:06:12flavor that comes from over 90 years' experience
- 2:06:15in giving tobacco chewers what they want. A clean,
- 2:06:18fresh taste that's not too strong, but isn't
- 2:06:21too sweet either. A flavor that really lasts
- 2:06:23and satisfies a man all day long. So if you haven't
- 2:06:26tried Mail Pouch lately, chew a few packs. and
- 2:06:29taste the mail pouch difference, you'll see why
- 2:06:32it's become a tradition to chew mail pouch and
- 2:06:34treat yourself to the best. Well, here tonight
- 2:06:38it was Detroit. Two runs, seven hits, one error,
- 2:06:40seven left. Cleveland, no runs, seven hits, one
- 2:06:43error, seven left. The winner is Jack Billingham.
- 2:06:46He is 13 -5, and Herb, he is hot. He surely is.
- 2:06:50That is his eighth straight win. Four of those
- 2:06:53wins have come on the shutout route, and tonight...
- 2:06:57He just did a whale of a job, did not walk a
- 2:07:00batter, struck only one man out, so he had them
- 2:07:01hitting the ball, he had the ball down, and a
- 2:07:03lot of the outs were on ground balls. And Jack
- 2:07:05Billingham, now a 13 -game winner, I have to
- 2:07:09say that the Tigers made a pretty good acquisition
- 2:07:11on Jack Billingham when they picked him up this
- 2:07:13spring. That is his 27th career shutout, and
- 2:07:19fourth with the Detroit Tigers, but... By the
- 2:07:21same token, Herb, you really have to be encouraged
- 2:07:24with the work of David Clyde. David Clyde tonight,
- 2:07:26I think, pitched as well as he has at any game
- 2:07:28this year. He started off in the first inning,
- 2:07:32gave up a run on two hits. He gave up a run in
- 2:07:35the third inning, a wild pitch, hurt him there.
- 2:07:37But after that, settled right down. He walked
- 2:07:39only two batters in the game. Both the walks
- 2:07:41came by the third inning. He struck out six.
- 2:07:44And David Clyde allowed just seven base hits.
- 2:07:46And I thought from about the fourth inning on.
- 2:07:48He just really started to cut loose and throw
- 2:07:50the ball the way David Clyde threw it in his
- 2:07:52first four or five starts. And that is encouraging.
- 2:07:54And, of course, again, the Indians lose another
- 2:07:56very tough ballgame, a close ballgame. And Jeff
- 2:07:59Tolborg, the eternal optimist, and I'm not saying
- 2:08:01that in a derogatory manner, but, you know, you
- 2:08:03try to look for positive things. And it's the
- 2:08:05case tonight of getting men on base and just
- 2:08:07not being able to get the hit when you needed
- 2:08:09it. Indians' best opportunity probably came right
- 2:08:12at the beginning of the ballgame. They had two
- 2:08:13men on the first inning, single by Manning. The
- 2:08:16next two men were out. And then Thornton was
- 2:08:17safe on an error. They couldn't score. Then in
- 2:08:20the second inning, Carville let off with a single.
- 2:08:22And he went to second base on a ground ball but
- 2:08:25made a turn not knowing where the ball was. And
- 2:08:27they trapped him off. And that sort of ended
- 2:08:28that threat because Kuyper followed with a base
- 2:08:30hit. And that was it. We'll have more for you
- 2:08:33from Tiger Stadium in Detroit after this timeout.
- 2:08:39The day is done. It's time to let it go. No matter
- 2:09:02what you do, no matter when or where, you know
- 2:09:09a glass of blood is like an easy drink. Let me
- 2:09:21tell you something I learned a long time ago.
- 2:09:24When you work hard, you ought to relax. Easy.
- 2:09:27That's what Budweiser's all about. When you think
- 2:09:31about it, you get it all. And I was a boy singer.
- 2:09:39Well, with this win tonight, the Tigers go to
- 2:09:4165 -52 on the year. They're 5 -3 against the
- 2:09:45Cleveland Indians, including three straight here
- 2:09:47at Tiger Stadium. The Indians flip to 53 -65.
- 2:09:51And on the road, their record is 20 -38. The
- 2:09:55Detroit Tigers assure themselves of... Well,
- 2:09:59they don't, because Milwaukee has won their first
- 2:10:01game. And should Milwaukee win the nightcap over
- 2:10:03Toronto, then Milwaukee would move a half game
- 2:10:05in front of the Detroit Tigers. But the Tigers
- 2:10:07are still in excellent shape in the American
- 2:10:10League East. And tomorrow night, in the second
- 2:10:13game of this brief two -game set, we're going
- 2:10:15to see Dave Friesleb in one and four for the
- 2:10:18Indians. and Jim Slayton, 12 -9 for the Detroit
- 2:10:21Tigers. And Herb, when you talk about Dave Friesleben,
- 2:10:24and I know you've talked about this with Jeff
- 2:10:26Torborg previously, here's another man that is
- 2:10:30slowly but surely getting his act together. Sort
- 2:10:32of being reconstructed as far as the pitcher
- 2:10:33goes because they're trying to smooth out his
- 2:10:36pitching style and his motion. And after the
- 2:10:38last performance by Dave Friesleben, a game in
- 2:10:40which he didn't win, but Jeff Torborg saying
- 2:10:42it was the best that he had thrown as far as
- 2:10:44staying in a groove, getting the fastball over,
- 2:10:47getting the breaking ball over. And each time
- 2:10:49he goes out, it looks like he's getting a little
- 2:10:50bit better, and of course that is a very good
- 2:10:52sign for the Indians. The Indians are just hoping
- 2:10:54that several on the line, they can put some hitting
- 2:10:56and some pitching together and get back in the
- 2:10:58winning pass. We'll have more for you here at
- 2:11:00Detroit right after we take this timeout. This
- 2:11:05is Dave Smith from Dave Smith Ford. We're over

- 2:13:31you some disturbing facts from the March of Dimes.
- 2:13:34In 16 foreign countries, a newborn baby has a
- 2:13:37better chance of surviving to his first birthday
- 2:13:40than he has in the United States. More of our
- 2:13:43babies die partly because we have a higher number
- 2:13:45of low birth weight babies. And low birth weight
- 2:13:48is the most common birth defect in our country.
- 2:13:50It is the cause of the greatest number of infant
- 2:13:52deaths. It is the major cause of disability in
- 2:13:55childhood. An unborn baby can't choose the country
- 2:13:59of its own. I'll have all the scores of all the
