- Lucas: Ciao, and welcome back to Learn Italian with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 30! Can you believe it? Lucas: I know, it's amazing. We've learned so much together. Luna: Yeah! We can say hello, order coffee, even count to twenty. Lucas: Exactly. Today, we're going to learn some animal names. The animals you might see on a farm. Luna: Oh, like cows and horses? That sounds fun. Lucas: Yes. Let's start with a very common one: il cane. 'The dog'. Luna: Il cane. Lucas: Perfect. Il cane. Can you say it again? Luna: Il cane. Lucas: Good. So if you see a dog, you say 'il cane'. Let's use it in a sentence. Io ho un cane. 'I have a dog.' Luna: Io ho un cane. That's easy. I remember 'io' from the essere episode. Lucas: Great memory. Now, another very popular pet: il gatto. 'The cat'. Luna: Il gatto. I love cats. Lucas: Then you'll like this: il gatto è piccolo. 'The cat is small.' Luna: Il gatto è piccolo. Lucas: Yes. Now let's try a bigger animal: il cavallo. 'The horse'. Luna: Il cavallo. That sounds like 'cavalry' in English. Lucas: Same root, yes. Il cavallo è grande. 'The horse is big.' Luna: Il cavallo è grande. Lucas: Good. Now let's do la mucca. 'The cow'. Luna: La mucca. That's a feminine word, right? Because it ends in 'a'. Lucas: Exactly. La mucca. Notice we say 'la' for feminine. So: la mucca è bianca e nera. 'The cow is black and white.' Luna: La mucca è bianca e nera. Lucas: Wonderful. Now one more: l'uccello. 'The bird'. Luna: L'uccello. That begins with a vowel, so it's l'. Lucas: Right. L'uccello vola. 'The bird flies.' Luna: L'uccello vola. That's pretty. Lucas: Okay, let's review all five. I'll say them, you repeat. Luna: Ready. Lucas: Il cane. Luna: Il cane. Lucas: Il gatto. Luna: Il gatto. Lucas: Il cavallo. Luna: Il cavallo. Lucas: La mucca. Luna: La mucca. Lucas: L'uccello. Luna: L'uccello. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's do a little story. Imagine we're at a farm. Luna, you see a dog. What do you say? Luna: Io vedo il cane. 'I see the dog.' Lucas: Ecco il cane! 'There's the dog!' Good. Then you see a cat. Luna: Io vedo il gatto. Lucas: Esatto. And then a horse. Luna: Io vedo il cavallo. Lucas: Now a cow. Luna: Io vedo la mucca. Lucas: And a bird. Luna: Io vedo l'uccello. Lucas: You did it. Now let's practice with 'I have'. I have a dog. Luna: Io ho un cane. Lucas: I have a cat. Luna: Io ho un gatto. Lucas: I have a horse. Luna: Io ho un cavallo. Lucas: I have a cow. Careful — un' for feminine? Luna: Uh, io ho una mucca? No, wait — mucca is feminine, so una mucca. Lucas: Yes! Una mucca. But because it starts with a consonant, it's una. So: io ho una mucca. Luna: Io ho una mucca. Lucas: Great. And I have a bird. Luna: Io ho un uccello. Because uccello starts with u, it's un again. Lucas: Exactly. You're catching on fast. Let's do a final round: tell me what you see at the farm. Luna: Io vedo il cane, il gatto, il cavallo, la mucca, e l'uccello. Lucas: Wonderful. Now you can name five animals in Italian. Practice with things around you. If you see a dog, think 'il cane'. Luna: Or a cat: il gatto. Lucas: That's it for today. Grazie per aver ascoltato, and keep practicing with Fexingo. Luna: Arrivederci! Lucas: Ciao ciao!
