Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: A Very Different Starting Line
Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey hurdlers, Emily A. Badi here bringing you this week's
- 0:22Speaker 1: episode of Five Minute Friday. What a week. I said
- 0:28Speaker 1: that at the beginning of every one of these episodes,
- 0:31Speaker 1: I am anxious and excited and feel like I'm forgetting things,
- 0:36Speaker 1: but that happens all the time. This week a little
- 0:39Speaker 1: bit more than usual because I am setting out to
- 0:42Speaker 1: run a virtual marathon this weekend because why not? And really,
- 0:48Speaker 1: I mean I wrote about that on social media earlier yesterday,
- 0:53Speaker 1: just like this idea that I feel as though in
- 0:58Speaker 1: a year that is so full of ups and downs
- 1:01Speaker 1: and things that I am unsure of and feeling like
- 1:05Speaker 1: you're like not enough, or that you have so much
- 1:08Speaker 1: to prove and you're spending so much time alone, like
- 1:11Speaker 1: so many things about this year, so many hard things,
- 1:15Speaker 1: that this virtual marathon for me is a reminder I
- 1:20Speaker 1: know that I can do the hard things. And so
- 1:25Speaker 1: when I keep getting asked, you know, why would you
- 1:28Speaker 1: do that, I'm just kind of like, you know what,
- 1:32Speaker 1: why not? Anyway, for five Minute Friday this week, I
- 1:36Speaker 1: am talking a little bit more about the virtual marathon.
- 1:39Speaker 1: You know, I'll be lacing up on Saturday to do it,
- 1:42Speaker 1: and you know, we all think a ton of things
- 1:44Speaker 1: before any race, whether it's a mile or a five k,
- 1:48Speaker 1: ten k half marathon, marathon, what have you? You have
- 1:51Speaker 1: a lot of thoughts right this week. I have been thinking,
- 1:54Speaker 1: like I need to do laundry, I need to buy bagels.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I'm out of peanut butter. I should I wear race bib?
- 2:00Speaker 1: I'm wondering if the temperature, which I think is like
- 2:04Speaker 1: maybe a high of forty eight right now, Like should
- 2:07Speaker 1: I be wearing shorts? Should I be wearing pants? Should
- 2:09Speaker 1: I be wearing a long sleeve? Do I know what
- 2:11Speaker 1: root I'm going? Which actually is kind of comical considering
- 2:15Speaker 1: you need to map out where you're gonna go in
- 2:18Speaker 1: some respects to make sure that you have enough room
- 2:21Speaker 1: to run twenty six point two miles. But God, that
- 2:25Speaker 1: makes it a lot more difficult to design your own
- 2:27Speaker 1: root instead of someone just guiding you exactly where to go. Okay,
- 2:32Speaker 1: I digress anyway. I mean, so many questions in my
- 2:36Speaker 1: head and so many things that are swirling, and so
- 2:38Speaker 1: many things that are different, Like I haven't or didn't
- 2:41Speaker 1: talk to my parents about the fact that I was
- 2:43Speaker 1: doing this in depth because I wouldn't expect them to
- 2:45Speaker 1: come for it unlike a normal marathon. Obviously, I'm not
- 2:50Speaker 1: going to a marathon expo. I'm not worrying about telling
- 2:53Speaker 1: people where to meet afterward to celebrate, like I'm not
- 2:56Speaker 1: doing a bunch of the normal things. It's it's my
- 3:00Speaker 1: race and it's my rules. With that said, something that
- 3:06Speaker 1: did pop into my head today that is interesting is
- 3:11Speaker 1: the thought that I am going to be starting this
- 3:14Speaker 1: race completely by myself. I do have like a friend,
- 3:18Speaker 1: a couple of friends that will be jumping in at
- 3:20Speaker 1: different points on this run, but not for like the
- 3:24Speaker 1: first eight to ten miles. And that's kind of crazy. Like,
- 3:29Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, so many times I go out for
- 3:32Speaker 1: a weekend long run or I go out on a
- 3:34Speaker 1: run and I'm going by myself, and that's one thing,
- 3:36Speaker 1: but never have I ever like set out on a marathon.
- 3:40Speaker 1: It feels really appropriate to go hand in hand with
- 3:44Speaker 1: twenty twenty, Like, how many things this year, whether you
- 3:48Speaker 1: are single or attached, have you had to pony up
- 3:51Speaker 1: and do alone? Have you had to do in a
- 3:55Speaker 1: way that is different than what you used to know?
- 3:58Speaker 1: This is just an other example of that. You know,
- 4:02Speaker 1: no one's going to be standing there watching me and
- 4:05Speaker 1: cheering me on. This is something that certainly has the
- 4:08Speaker 1: potential to be uncomfortable, and it becomes my responsibility, and
- 4:13Speaker 1: my responsibility alone as I have set out to do this,
- 4:17Speaker 1: that I'm going to stay the course. This is an
- 4:19Speaker 1: opportunity for me to focus on the things that I
- 4:21Speaker 1: can control and kind of throw my hands up in
- 4:25Speaker 1: the air to the things that I can't. Just like
- 4:29Speaker 1: this crazy, crazy year, I have no goal, no expectation
- 4:35Speaker 1: aside from the fact that I will finish, and I
- 4:40Speaker 1: feel as though Saturday is really just another opportunity for
- 4:44Speaker 1: me to lace up my shoes and go out there
- 4:48Speaker 1: and do something that I love that makes me feel
- 4:51Speaker 1: like me a little less adrenaline maybe than usual, but
- 4:56Speaker 1: I will always, whether it's Saturday or any other day,
- 5:02Speaker 1: have me have my thoughts and be my own biggest
- 5:08Speaker 1: hype man. My prompt for you this week, what is
- 5:12Speaker 1: one goal that you have for the remainder of twenty twenty.
- 5:15Speaker 1: What's something that you want to get done? Again, what
- 5:17Speaker 1: is one goal you have for the remainder of twenty twenty?
- 5:21Speaker 1: What is something that you want to get done? Listener
- 5:26Speaker 1: Question of the Week, Who is your dream hurdle? Guest well,
- 5:33Speaker 1: I have a lot of them, and I've been very
- 5:35Speaker 1: lucky to have had the opportunity to talk to some
- 5:38Speaker 1: of them throughout the past almost three years. I would say,
- 5:43Speaker 1: on the top of my list right now some people
- 5:46Speaker 1: I would love to talk to uh Serena Williams, Simone Biles,
- 5:52Speaker 1: Megan Rappino, Misty Copeland, Chilane Flanagan. These are all like
- 5:58Speaker 1: complete female asses, but just rambling off some of them.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And if someone listening to this knows away, we can
- 6:06Speaker 1: make this happen. Trust me, I have been trying. I'm trying.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I'm always trying, So feel free to inbox me if
- 6:13Speaker 1: you've got the in highlights of the week. As always,

- 6:29Speaker 1: me talk to the founder of Tracksmith, Matt Taylor on
- 6:33Speaker 1: the show before. They're a huge brand that is all
- 6:37Speaker 1: about the running scene. They've got a ton of great
- 6:39Speaker 1: product and I'm really big on this new collection that
- 6:43Speaker 1: they have inspired by the legacy of New York Pioneer
- 6:46Speaker 1: Club athlete Ted Corbett. It's in celebration of the fifty
- 6:51Speaker 1: years of the New York Marathon. Corbett helped plan that
- 6:54Speaker 1: course and they Tracksmith worked with another fellow hurdler, Robinson,
- 7:00Speaker 1: to create this really awesome limited edition collection. They've got
- 7:05Speaker 1: racing kits, teas, sweatshirts, all with Varsity lettering and colors,
- 7:10Speaker 1: and I am just so about it. Next up, learn

- 8:41Speaker 1: bit more appropriate Gray Mallon's Goals Journal. I am a
- 8:45Speaker 1: huge Gray Mallon fan. If you don't know about him,
- 8:48Speaker 1: he is a stunning photographer, most known for his aerial
- 8:54Speaker 1: beach photography. I love all of his stuff from Italy.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Mallan recently released this journy, which is basically a series
- 9:01Speaker 1: of prompted exercises alongside his awesome photography. And I love
- 9:06Speaker 1: that in this Gray himself he sprinkled and just like
- 9:10Speaker 1: his own advice and tidbits and experiences, and I really
- 9:13Speaker 1: like it. So give that a LOOXI Talking about books
- 9:18Speaker 1: and writing, I finally have picked next month aka December
- 9:23Speaker 1: ninth Hurdle book Club choice, we're going to be reading
