- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:07to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host, Andrew McGivern for December 14th.
- 0:14Today is Monkey Day, an international celebration of our
- 0:17primate cousins. Created in the year 2000 by art
- 0:21students Casey Soro and Eric Milliken at the Michigan State
- 0:25University, Monkey Day started as a joke scribbled on a
- 0:28friend's calendar. But this playful holiday has
- 0:32evolved into a serious platform for primate conservation
- 0:36awareness. Today, Monkey Day is celebrated
- 0:40in zoos, sanctuaries, and classrooms worldwide.
- 0:44It's supported by primatologists, environmental
- 0:47activists, and animal rights organizations.
- 0:50Playful spirit remains. People dress in monkey costumes,
- 0:54create primate themed art, and share monkey memes.
- 0:57But beneath the fun lies an urgent message.
- 1:01Over half the world's 262 monkey species are threatened with
- 1:06extinction. Monkey Day reminds us that our
- 1:10closest relatives in the animal Kingdom need our help.
- 1:14And that brings us to today's quote from renowned
- 1:17primatologist Jane Goodall. We spent over 60 years studying
- 1:22chimpanzees and captured the essence of conservation when she
- 1:26said only if we understand will we care.
- 1:31Only if we care will we help. Good old simple progression
- 1:36reveals how change happens. Understanding comes first.
- 1:41Not assumptions or stereotypes, but real knowledge.
- 1:45She spent years observing chimpanzees, learning their
- 1:49behaviors, recognizing their intelligence and emotions.
- 1:53That understanding led to caring.
- 1:56Once she saw chimpanzees as individuals with personalities,
- 1:59families, and feelings, she couldn't look away.
- 2:03Understanding transformed indifference into connection,
- 2:07and caring naturally leads to helping.
- 2:09When you truly care about something, action becomes
- 2:12inevitable. Goodall founded institutions,
- 2:16changed laws, and spent decades advocating for primate
- 2:20protection. Monkey Day follows this same
- 2:24progression, too. Learn about monkeys, understand
- 2:28them, care about them, help protect them.
- 2:32The holiday works because it makes understanding accessible.
- 2:36You don't need a PhD to celebrate Monkey Day.
- 2:39You just need curiosity. Watch a documentary or visit a
- 2:43sanctuary. Read about a species that
- 2:47understanding plants, seeds of caring which grow into action.
- 2:53So today, celebrate Monkey Day by following Goodall's wisdom.
- 2:57First, understand. Learn about a monkey species.
- 3:01Read about their habitats, behaviors and the threats that
- 3:05they face. YouTube has incredible primate
- 3:08documentaries. 5 minutes of watching will change how you see
- 3:12these animals. Second, let yourself care.
- 3:16Don't distance yourself from the problem.
- 3:19Feel the connection to these intelligent, playful social
- 3:22creatures who share 98% of our DNA.
- 3:25And 3rd, help. Support reputable primate
- 3:29sanctuaries. Donate or spread awareness.
- 3:33Make choices that protect their habitats.
- 3:36Even small actions matter. Because Goodall was right.
- 3:39The progression from understanding to helping is
- 3:42natural. We just need to take that first
- 3:45step. That's going to do it for today.
- 3:48I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 3:54tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 3:59with another daily quote.
