- 0:00Speaker 1: Speaking of wedge of long worn football, uh our man
- 0:04Speaker 1: Will Matthews sits down with long worn players every week.
- 0:07Speaker 1: We'll hear some collective conversations here. Here's one that he
- 0:10Speaker 1: hads with the long worns starting offensive love tackle Calvin Banks.
- 0:14Speaker 2: One of the things that Jake Major said was being
- 0:17Speaker 2: able to show the young guys what it means to
- 0:20Speaker 2: bounce back. It seems like inside of the culture there's
- 0:23Speaker 2: room for bounce back and growth. Talk about that process
- 0:27Speaker 2: for you in the line.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Oh yeah, especially for one, you have to be able
- 0:31Speaker 3: to bounce back from from from games like this because
- 0:34Speaker 3: it's kind of like a point of of we need
- 0:38Speaker 3: to do better for the team because as old, you
- 0:40Speaker 3: feel like you're that cornerstone for the whole team, no
- 0:43Speaker 3: matter if it's for the defense or for the offense.
- 0:45Speaker 3: You kind of just got to go out there and
- 0:46Speaker 3: set the tone. And coming off of that loss is
- 0:49Speaker 3: kind of hard because like, all right, are we are
- 0:52Speaker 3: we doing anything wrong?
- 0:53Speaker 4: Or what are we doing wrong? But at the point
- 0:56Speaker 4: of fact, is really just how you execute and.
- 0:57Speaker 3: How you come out and and play, and how you
- 1:00Speaker 3: execute Sark's playing that he's putting in front of you,
- 1:03Speaker 3: and and from that point, Jake saying that we need
- 1:06Speaker 3: this is it's a good chance to show the young guy,
- 1:08Speaker 3: this is how you bounce back from a loss. This
- 1:10Speaker 3: is how you take a loss and then move forward
- 1:12Speaker 3: and keep your eyes focused on what's ahead of you
- 1:15Speaker 3: and now that's Vanderbilt.
- 1:16Speaker 4: So just just focusing week week about week.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Day by day, just going by and just trying to
- 1:20Speaker 3: make sure we un instill that into the young guys
- 1:22Speaker 3: so when they when they get in this position as
- 1:24Speaker 3: an older guy, they can seal it until the guys
- 1:26Speaker 3: who's coming in as well.
- 1:27Speaker 2: As you're talking talking about legacy and and and this
- 1:31Speaker 2: season specifically, we know it's not over. There's a lot,
- 1:35Speaker 2: there's a lot to play for. In fact, and I
- 1:36Speaker 2: think it's really off the table talk about what Sark
- 1:39Speaker 2: has been telling you guys about the rest of the season.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Yeah, really, he's just been telling us like if you
- 1:45Speaker 3: if you dwell on what's already happened, you're kind of
- 1:47Speaker 3: gonna shoot yourself in the foot. And in a sense,
- 1:50Speaker 3: like looking back on what's already happening Saturday with Saturday
- 1:54Speaker 3: and if you think about if you're thinking about Saturday
- 1:57Speaker 3: while you're playing Vanderbilt, how are you gonna be able
- 1:59Speaker 3: to focus on Vanderbilt's play is and focus on what
- 2:02Speaker 3: they're trying to throw at you? Kind of a sense
- 2:04Speaker 3: of just make sure we focus on what's happening right
- 2:06Speaker 3: now and today's Monday.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Let's focus on Monday kind of thing like that.
- 2:11Speaker 2: As you're looking into going into Vanderbilt. They've got a
- 2:14Speaker 2: really great team. They've had upsets against Bama, and they've
- 2:18Speaker 2: been at the doorstep of a couple of other ones
- 2:20Speaker 2: as well. How do you prepare for a team that
- 2:23Speaker 2: like this?
- 2:24Speaker 3: I mean, just just just going out there every week,
- 2:26Speaker 3: just like we doing practice hard.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Man.
- 2:28Speaker 3: I feel like if you don't just don't try to coase,
- 2:33Speaker 3: like like say, don't make stuff up, don't make anything up.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Go do exactly what you do every week, the same
- 2:38Speaker 3: routine you have, and just go out there and be
- 2:39Speaker 3: prepared to play hard.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Until we just alluded to this for a second, everything's okay,
- 2:45Speaker 2: everything's on the table. Longhorns showed up hugely Saturday. Can
- 2:50Speaker 2: you talk to Longhorns and just tell them where are
- 2:54Speaker 2: you guys at and how are y'all feeling moving forward?
- 2:56Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 2:56Speaker 3: We feel good moving forward, man, Like I'm I'm gonna
- 3:00Speaker 3: piggyback just from the beginning, Like we took our loss,
- 3:02Speaker 3: and we kind of the same situations last year we lost,
- 3:06Speaker 3: Like we know what it takes to come back from
- 3:08Speaker 3: that loss, and we're going to do our best to
- 3:10Speaker 3: try to keep pushing that forward for us and then
- 3:13Speaker 3: our other teammates as well. But I just want to
- 3:15Speaker 3: say I appreciate the fans for actually coming out and
- 3:18Speaker 3: even showing love.
- 3:18Speaker 4: No matter what the score was.
- 3:20Speaker 3: They were there the whole time, still cheering us so on,
- 3:22Speaker 3: no matter if we were down or if we were
- 3:24Speaker 3: having a good drive or anything like that. So I
- 3:25Speaker 3: just want to appreciate the fans for that and just
- 3:28Speaker 3: let them know that, man, we're still here.
- 3:30Speaker 4: All right there it is.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I'm Calvin Banks, and I think a lot of folks
- 3:33Speaker 1: got a chance to learn a little bit more about
- 3:35Speaker 1: Calvin with the ESPN's college game downtown. They did the
- 3:38Speaker 1: big feature on his mom, who was critically ill and
- 3:43Speaker 1: had actually been placed in hospice care, and then they
- 3:45Speaker 1: found out that it was her body reacting to her
- 3:48Speaker 1: diabetics medications, and once they were able to correct all
- 3:54Speaker 1: of that, then she's recovered and has been back in
- 3:57Speaker 1: the football games again. So it was pretty inspiring story
- 3:59Speaker 1: and great for great guy like Calvin. And I understand. Listen,
- 4:05Speaker 1: trust me on this. I understand if you are a
- 4:09Speaker 1: fan of a team and the team does not perform
- 4:12Speaker 1: to what you hope I'm not even getting into the expectation.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I'm just saying, how you hope that they would. The
- 4:20Speaker 1: disappointment frustration completely understandable. And the guys understand that. The
- 4:24Speaker 1: coaches understand that because they understand they're in that same category.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Nobody has higher expectations for wanting to perform well than
- 4:30Speaker 1: they do, but they understand the fans thing. But these
- 4:38Speaker 1: are guys that going out there giving it everything they
- 4:40Speaker 1: can in week after week. Kelvin Banks has done an
- 4:43Speaker 1: outstanding job and he didn't even really get graded that
- 4:47Speaker 1: poorly by those who do the grading of such things.
- 4:50Speaker 1: But as Sark was pointing out, it took a lot
- 4:54Speaker 1: of Monday morning quarterbacks calling out certain players said well
- 4:57Speaker 1: they didn't do this and they didn't do that, and
- 5:00Speaker 1: that it had become you know, experts in the field
- 5:04Speaker 1: a little bit. And I don't know that I've never
- 5:06Speaker 1: felt that I was such an expert on football I
- 5:09Speaker 1: could grade an offensive lineman's performance. You can tell if
- 5:12Speaker 1: somebody has a really difficult time, for sure. But I
- 5:15Speaker 1: just try to keep in mind that I know these
- 5:17Speaker 1: guys are grinded during the week. I see it with
- 5:20Speaker 1: my own eyes, how hard to working in practice and
- 5:22Speaker 1: trying to get ready for a given game. So it's
- 5:25Speaker 1: tough for them. If you think it's tough for you,
- 5:28Speaker 1: you know understand it's definitely tough for them as well.
- 5:30Speaker 1: All Right, we'll be back to wrap up Hour number
- 5:32Speaker 1: two here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under The Zone.
