- 0:00Mason said. 260 now, Yeah, yeah, actually, May, right before I
- 0:04came down here on the fly, I waited at 2:59 for.
- 0:07So not quite 260, but close enough.
- 0:09You know what's? What's the goal with?
- 0:11That like where, where do you want to get to and what does
- 0:13that do for you? Right, right.
- 0:16Honestly, I didn't plan on it to be honest.
- 0:18I've been working on the facility, so I've been working
- 0:20with the strength coaches over there and I think I'm in a
- 0:22pretty good straight strength program.
- 0:24I feel a lot stronger for sure, and that that weight just came
- 0:27with it for sure. It just feels more explosive.
- 0:34I don't know if it is. I can describe it.
- 0:36When I was in the cage the other day, I just felt a lot more
- 0:38explosive than I do at this point in the offseason, man.
- 0:41And so now I'm just really ready to get into some live ABS, maybe
- 0:44some matchups to see how I can, you know how it feels during,
- 0:47you know, in game play. You're living in Jupiter now.
- 0:50What does a typical day look like?
- 0:52Are you? Working with Cheo, Yeah, Yeah,
- 0:54absolutely. Yeah.
- 0:55So he's broken down for me. He, he really wants me to go
- 0:57through this whole process. So I'll actually break it down
- 1:00for you. I get there probably around
- 1:029:45. I stretch out and then I go work
- 1:04with Cheo at about 10 for about 30 minutes to an hour based on
- 1:08what he wants me to work on that day.
- 1:09Whether it's first step, quickness, whether it's tracking
- 1:12balls, whether it's coming up and getting, whether it's, you
- 1:16know, my emotion towards throwing somebody out.
- 1:19And then so 3030 minutes to an hour, I would say that I would
- 1:21hop right into the cage and work out right by the, the, the four
- 1:24cages out there in the back and I'll head in there for maybe
- 1:28like 45 minutes to an hour as well.
- 1:30Sometimes Donnie will be in there with me.
- 1:32So if he's in there with me, you know, talk to me a little bit,
- 1:35it'll be a little bit longer. And then afterwards I'll go to
- 1:38the strength and conditioning and probably lift and if I have
- 1:41to run that day, I'll run. So that takes about an hour, 30
- 1:44minutes. I'll get back home around 2:30
- 1:45based on what I get for lunch that day.
- 1:49Are you happy with the progress you've made?
- 1:51Defensively. Oh yeah.
- 1:52In the offseason, yeah. So we've been working on in the
- 1:54in the strength and conditioning.
- 1:55I've been working on movements being a little bit quicker
- 1:58laterally and you know I grew fast and they and they told me
- 2:03that. So it was just a little bit
- 2:04difficult. I was a little bit behind
- 2:05catching up to you know how my body moved.
- 2:07But they've definitely helped me out a lot with that in this
- 2:09offseason is I have to continue to do my drills so I can
- 2:12maintain it. So now is that like if you talk
- 2:15about adding a little more size, keeping the mobility, Yeah,
- 2:21absolutely, Yeah. And now they don't want me to
- 2:23lose that either. Thing is I I put on this weight
- 2:26during the in the offseason, but usually after I run a few a
- 2:30little bit during the the regular season, that water
- 2:32weight I'll I'll lose a little bit of it.
- 2:34And so mobility wise, I feel pretty good.
- 2:36I feel kind of like how I did, how fluid I was last offseason,
- 2:42but just a little bit stronger and it's a little bit more
- 2:43explosive, if that makes sense, right?
- 2:47Individual. Goals.
- 2:49With the way we finished last year with the power, what would
- 2:52be realistic numbers? Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:54I think honestly I would like to start driving the ball a little
- 2:57bit more, a little bit earlier on as the season went on.
- 3:00I started driving the ball a lot, a lot better.
- 3:02And I think that's just a kind of a vague goal to have right
- 3:05now. And usually my dad and I, we
- 3:06talk about specific, you know, stats, goals to do with stats
- 3:11later on. And once I do, we'll get back to
- 3:13you. And there's some stats I met
- 3:15last season and that I didn't. So we'll try to, you know, do a
- 3:18better job of, you know, bearing down this year.
- 3:22I would like it to be. Yes, Sir.
- 3:24Yeah, I would like it to be for sure, dating.
- 3:26Back to November. Zaylock has said that his ideal
- 3:29starting out bills for 2024. Because you carrying that, what
- 3:34does that do for your confidence?
- 3:35Knowing that you're. Going to come in in 2024 and
- 3:37have a consistent goal especially.
- 3:42Yeah, absolutely. It means a lot, first of all.
- 3:45But that was my goal out the gate, to be the starting right
- 3:48fielder for sure. So I put a lot of work in this
- 3:51offseason, but to hear him say that, definitely, it meant a lot
- 3:53to me. For sure you.
- 3:55Think it all about. The some last year you were
- 3:58sitting up there. Talking about trying.
- 3:59To make the team. Did.
- 4:01You reflect, you know when you got away from it, all the things
- 4:05that you did last. Season.
- 4:06Yeah, absolutely. I took that time, you know, kind
- 4:08of after this season, you know, Body's tired after this season,
- 4:12obviously. But there's a little bit of
- 4:14like, I don't know, just nostalgic feeling to it.
- 4:16And just look back on the season.
- 4:19Yeah, sometimes it felt long based on how my body felt at the
- 4:22end of the year. But I look back, it went really
- 4:25by really quickly. And so I have to, you know,
- 4:27remind myself to enjoy, you know, every part of baseball
- 4:29because it is a really fun sport to play the most.
- 4:35I'm sorry. Most about myself.
- 4:36Oh, absolutely. Yeah.
- 4:37That's a good question, man. I think I learned that.
- 4:41I'm going to have to, you know, I got to forget some of the
- 4:44things I learned coming up here because having all these
- 4:46veterans, having all these coaches, man, they've taught me
- 4:48a lot about the game. And that I think the one thing I
- 4:50learned about myself is that I have to always be able to adjust
- 4:53and and be coachable, to be honest, because you never know.
- 4:55I don't. I didn't ever feel like I I knew
- 4:58you know, the whole game because they're always teaching me
- 4:59something. What did you?
- 5:01What did you see in Mason? He's struggled offensively and
- 5:06what do you think that? Does As far as driving, yeah,
- 5:11honestly, yeah. I I think everybody struggles.
- 5:14It just happened to him at the that.
- 5:16It happened at the beginning. But I wasn't worried.
- 5:18I'm not worried about him at all.
- 5:20I've seen him hit like for what, 20/20/20?
- 5:22I've been here for four years now.
- 5:24I know that he can handle it and I I know the type of plan that
- 5:26he is and I think that he just needs to you know, relax, just
- 5:29like how I had a problem relaxing.
- 5:31I think we're we're pretty similar when it comes to that.
- 5:33And once he, you know, fully relaxes, he's going to play his
- 5:36game. He's going to be a great hitter.
- 5:37He's going to be a great defender as you guys know.
- 5:39So no problem with him at all. He.
- 5:40Mentioned that he when he gets to a level he kind of struggles
- 5:44then takes off know better than anybody what that what that
- 5:49looks like from the outside is that his competitiveness?
- 5:52Is that how? Analytically it is, yeah.
- 5:54No, I I think it just goes with competitiveness as all we.
- 5:57We're always competing whether it's on the baseball field or
- 6:00off playing video games. He'll say he's better than me at
- 6:02video games. I'll I'll disagree with that.
- 6:05But he's always competitive. Everything we do.
- 6:07You know, when it came to, you know, either either sports or
- 6:11just pretty much anything when it comes to, you know, arguing
- 6:13he's the best basketball player of all time.
- 6:15I'll argue Jordan. He argues LeBron, but he's
- 6:17competitive with that. So it's just, I think it's the
- 6:19competitive spirit that he has. What kind of?
- 6:21Hitter can he be? For those of.
- 6:23Us who really haven't seen that. Day-to-day, right?
- 6:27I think he's going to be a really good hitter for average,
- 6:29but I think he has some power. I think people sleep on his
- 6:31power a lot, so I think he's going to hit a little bit more
- 6:33home runs than people think he's going to be.
- 6:34So I think he's going to be a pretty complete hitter when it
- 6:36comes down to it, Jordan. Mr. Scott second.
- 6:39Did here this morning. So that you've given him some
- 6:42advice. About going, yeah.
- 6:46How do those conversations? Come up and some of the things
- 6:49that you've. Kind of given him as kind of a
- 6:52some some advice as going into this spring.
- 6:56For him, Absolutely. Yeah.
- 6:56I mean it for gossip guys. It's kind of hard to give advice
- 6:59in my situation because he's just so good.
- 7:01Like what? I'm not going to tell him.
- 7:02You know what I'm saying? When it comes to the game, I
- 7:04don't, I shouldn't tell him anything.
- 7:06He just keep doing what he's doing.
- 7:08Unbelievable athlete. I don't know if you guys have
- 7:10seen him and have you guys he he's unbelievable basketball
- 7:12player, unbelievable bowler. He's kind of like the Mookie
- 7:15Betts the Cardinals of how to say.
- 7:18But yeah, it's hard to tell a guy you know to give advice to
- 7:21someone who's that good when it comes to it.
- 7:24I I just kind of, you know, give him little tidbits and just how
- 7:27it's going to go your first, like full spring training and
- 7:30things like that. And I expect him, you know, to
- 7:32be up pretty soon as well. So I was just trying to give
- 7:34him, you know, a few heads up about some things, just how
- 7:36things work and and how he's going to go about something.
- 7:42Oh, yeah, absolutely. For sure.
- 7:48Yeah, absolutely. I would like it like that.
- 7:50I wouldn't want him to sugar coat it at all.
- 7:52I feel like when you're sugar coating it, you're trying to
- 7:54keep from hurting someone's feelings.
- 7:55But no, I mean, sometimes you're going to have to hurt someone's
- 7:57feelings if you don't want to be good at something for sure.
- 7:59So yeah, absolutely. He's definitely tough on me.
- 8:03Went into the decision to spend, you know, this offseason down in
- 8:09the floor. Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:10So these the training and conditioning coaches, they told
- 8:12me, you know, they want to have eyes on me and I feel like I
- 8:15trust them because they've seen me all season.
- 8:17They've seen how my body worked. They know better than any, you
- 8:20know, strength coach like what to do and things like that.
- 8:23So I have that trust with them. They've been working with me and
- 8:25I've been really happy with the results so far.
- 8:26Jordan. Last year, I mean, there's
- 8:28different guys he played next to and center.
- 8:31Field with. Tommy Edmond as the stated
- 8:33center fielder going into the year.
- 8:34What? What kind of value can that
- 8:35have? Just know I'm going to play
- 8:36next. To this guy, major value, as you
- 8:40saw Tommy Evans, fantastic outfielder, you know?
- 8:43And if any of that rubs up on me, I feel like that's that's a
- 8:45pretty good thing for sure. Oh absolutely.
- 8:50So yeah, if if I can just pick his brand a little bit, you know
- 8:52talk to him a little bit what he sees because his jumps and his
- 8:55routes are are very, very, very good and that's something that I
- 8:58really wanted to focus on this offseason and I think that's
- 9:01just the first step as well. So once again that down packed,
- 9:04you know, getting the balls, tracking the balls and then
- 9:06using some of my athleticism can definitely become help become a
- 9:08great outfielder. So just that communication is
- 9:11very important I believe, if that answers your question.
- 9:13Are are jumps and routes the thing that you can measure
- 9:16against the baseline? Like there was their video
- 9:18they're testing that shows you were here and now.
- 9:20You're here? Yeah, actually.
- 9:22So when I'm working with you, he said.
- 9:24He looked at video. He said when my jumps were
- 9:27better than others, it actually comes to actually, I'm glad you
- 9:31asked. It comes to the thing we were
- 9:31talking about the other day. I have a tendency to start, like
- 9:36when I see a ball, I go after it and then I'm trying to make sure
- 9:38that, you know, I read it right. So I come back on my heels a
- 9:41little bit more and he's been really working with me and
- 9:43teaching me to just go after it. Trust your gut instinct.
- 9:45And so he said he can tell the difference between me getting to
- 9:49a ball later in the season and earlier in the season, like kind
- 9:52of the same ball. And so I think that's just
- 9:55something, you know, that helps. It's not always maybe you know,
- 9:58whether you're athletic enough or not.
- 10:00It's just based on like a mental mindset of, you know, trusting
- 10:03your first gut instinct. How much is.
- 10:07Yeah, right. And some, yeah.
- 10:11Some players talk about how it comes off the bat.
- 10:14And and I think maybe part of my issue is I I couldn't really
- 10:17tell, to be honest. You know, sometimes it sounded
- 10:19harder than it actually was. And so I really don't want to,
- 10:23you know, trust that as much. I kind of just want to like
- 10:25trust my eyes a little bit more than my ears.
- 10:27George. You made the jump from
- 10:29Springfield. Go to Saint Louis and spend some
- 10:31time in Memphis with last year. Teach you about kind of the the
- 10:34differences between minor league ball and what it takes to thrive
- 10:38in the big. Leagues, the attention to detail
- 10:40and things like that, Yeah. I feel like when it comes to
- 10:44that, I have the big leaves get to be a lot more consistent.
- 10:46I have to be on a lot, a lot more than I would have to the
- 10:48mileage. Not saying the mile leagues is
- 10:50easy, because it's definitely not.
- 10:52But in the big leagues, they made, they made less mistakes.
- 10:54So those mistakes I have, I would have to capitalize on them
- 10:56when they didn't make them those mistakes.
- 10:58And so I would have to be better, you know, a lot more
- 11:00consistently, if that makes sense.
- 11:03Yeah. Like to lean back on like now
- 11:05you've got that internalized a little bit.
- 11:06How much does that help you? Does it give you like an added
- 11:09confidence going into this year because there's.
- 11:11Less that's. Like you know what to.
- 11:13Expect. Yeah, Yeah.
- 11:15I I actually always don't think I, I know all of what I, you
- 11:18know, need to know. But yeah, definitely.
- 11:21If your question was, is it giving me confidence?
- 11:23Absolutely. Having my first year is
- 11:25definitely something I can look back on.
- 11:27Definitely a first step in my career and definitely helps me
- 11:29with my confidence wise. For sure.
- 11:30You were you? Were asked.
- 11:32You know what, like a temporary hitter Mason can be?
- 11:35Yeah. After a year of the big league,
- 11:38what sort of a hitter do you feel like you should be in your
- 11:41second? Yeah, I I I've always wanted to
- 11:43be a hitter that can drive the ball.
- 11:44And now that I've seen for a year how they how they pitched
- 11:46me last year and what to expect, you know, talking to Goldie and
- 11:50talking to Arenado, how my approach should be at the plate.
- 11:52I thought it's going to be a consistent, you know here that
- 11:54drives the ball to all parts of the field and I can drive the
- 11:57ball over the wall. So I expect I want to also be
- 12:00consistent here as well. I want to be able to hit the
- 12:02ball and and get on base by hitting the ball higher than the
- 12:06average, you know what I'm saying?
- 12:07So I want to hit for average. I want to hit for power and I
- 12:09believe based off of the first season, if I make those
- 12:12adjustments this offseason, that I can do both of those.
- 12:28Yeah, right. I honestly haven't talked to him
- 12:33too much about it. Most of my conversations with
- 12:34him I've been about, you know, hitting the baseball.
- 12:37So whenever I get a chance to talk to him in the cage, he he,
- 12:41he's actually kind of been one of my heading coaches.
- 12:43I think he used to say he sees what I'm doing and he sees, you
- 12:47know what I can work on, what, you know, why I'm pulling off
- 12:51the ball in the cage maybe, or why I'm cutting myself off in
- 12:54the cage. He's the guy to talk to you
- 12:55about that. So most of our conversations
- 12:57have been hitting wise. Sorry about that.
- 12:58What is Brendan Donovan like as a leader?
- 13:01Yeah, yeah, he's stoic, man. He'll tell you exactly how it is
- 13:05and I wouldn't want it any other way.
- 13:06He he will hurt your feelings, that's for sure.
- 13:09But yeah, I I think that's a good thing about him and he
- 13:12tells you exactly how it is. He gets to the point he makes it
- 13:15short and quick. But you know you know he loves
- 13:16you and you know he he wants the best for you.
- 13:19And so whenever you you you see something that you're doing
- 13:22wrong. He'll he'll let you know for
- 13:23sure with you and the outfielder.
- 13:29Like, what would be the example towards the beginning of the
- 13:35offseason, we were hitting the cage and he was talking about my
- 13:39hip mobility, which has gotten a lot better as like throughout
- 13:43the whole offseason. But he was like, yeah, you can't
- 13:46hit like this. I was like you got to get those
- 13:49hips right and things like that. So I mean, obviously he he was
- 13:52telling me and he one of the best for me, but he wasn't
- 13:54trying to hurt me in any way as well and I'm, I'm glad he did
- 13:56tell me that. So it was the strength coaches.
- 13:58I've been working with them. They've also told me that as
- 14:00well. But he's the first person to
- 14:02tell me, as blunt as that, for sure.
- 14:04You're on. Winter warm up is a unique
- 14:06experience. You're able to go on the road in
- 14:08a different way, meet different people, meet fans.
- 14:11Can you talk about what that does for the camaraderie?
- 14:14Between the team, Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 14:17Yeah. So you're talking about the the
- 14:19whole winter world experience. Yeah, I'm having a I'm having a
- 14:22great time when we were absolutely.
- 14:23So we got to travel, we got to see fans everywhere and just
- 14:25seeing how they are excited. I went through the Peoria route,
- 14:29so it's being how excited they are.
- 14:30But like that gives you a different feel for the game.
- 14:33Like, you know you, I mean, obviously we're playing for
- 14:35them, I play for them, I play for my family.
- 14:38And so being able to see how excited they are, how much they
- 14:42want you to succeed gives you an extra drive to be better, if
- 14:45that answers your question. You're going to see a hungry
- 14:51ball club, yeah. Who's the drivers of that?
- 14:53Who's? Who's picking up who's?
- 14:56Motivating gas. Yeah, actually I would say
- 14:57Donnie's a a head driver just of the I I haven't talked to him.
- 15:02You know our one-on-one conversations have been like
- 15:04that. But the group chat, yeah, he's,
- 15:05you know, talking about, he's usually one pumping us up.
- 15:09Last year, you know, it was Wainwright.
- 15:11But I mean, once we all convene and and see each other in this
- 15:15spring training, I think that there's going to be some talks
- 15:17and there's definitely going to be some guys, you know,
- 15:19motivating the group and at least against him, I'm really
- 15:22excited to meet these new guys like Lance Lynn, Sony Grey, Kyle
- 15:25Gibson. Heard a lot about them and a lot
- 15:27about their leadership. So I'm looking forward to them
- 15:30to, you know, help drive the group as well.
- 15:32Donovan was in. Gary talked about it was mostly
- 15:34in the battery box, but sometimes it's best just to not.
- 15:37Think, Yeah. You were talking about in the
- 15:38outfield, sometimes trusting your.
- 15:40Absolutely. You might be focusing on this
- 15:42offseason out there. Trust your instinct.
- 15:44And maybe not. Think as much.
- 15:45Yeah. Actually, he put it.
- 15:46He put it perfectly. Yeah.
- 15:47Don usually has the right way to say it.
- 15:48Yeah. Just not think.
- 15:49You trust your instincts? Absolutely.
- 15:51When you get to thinking, that's kind of, you know, when things
- 15:53go a little bit haywire.
