Speaker 1: Peter Krandler live on Sky News Australia.
0:07
Speaker 2: Good evening, Welcome to the program. Here's what's coming up
0:10
Speaker 2: tonight on Predline. Jubilant scenes with the hostages finally released
0:14
Speaker 2: as we saw last night, and the Trumpet peace plan
0:17
Speaker 2: signed off late last night Australian time. Now, given we've
0:20
Speaker 2: issued some three and a half thousand visas to people
0:23
Speaker 2: coming out of Gaza, isn't it time they now go home?
0:27
Speaker 2: Shocking scenes on the streets of Melbourne, or maybe not
0:30
Speaker 2: so shocking if you leave here. Giving the almost daily
0:32
Speaker 2: crime violence, this time a government arrested in the city
0:36
Speaker 2: after a dramatic police chase.
0:38
Speaker 3: I'll get you an update on that shortly.
0:40
Speaker 2: Plus the PM away on another holiday, this time overseas.
0:44
Speaker 3: All eyes on the.
0:45
Speaker 2: Treasurer as he did his best today to spin away
0:48
Speaker 2: that massive backflip on superannuation changes and revelations to the
0:53
Speaker 2: Victorian schools are secretly allowing children to transition with our
0:58
Speaker 2: parental consent or even Liberal MP Moradeeming joins me a
1:02
Speaker 2: little later, but at least in the NT they're getting
1:05
Speaker 2: it right. Lea Finiciaro banning all biological men from women's
1:10
Speaker 2: prisons in the territory.
1:13
Speaker 4: We have very clear rules here in the Northern Territory.
1:16
Speaker 5: If you're a blot, you go to a men's prison.
1:18
Speaker 6: If you're a woman, you go to women's prison.
1:23
Speaker 2: Please, please, please, Can we have some of that plane
1:25
Speaker 2: talking down in the rest of the country. But first
1:28
Speaker 2: let's go yesterday to those scenes we saw. The release
1:31
Speaker 2: of twenty living Israeli hostages from their two years of
1:34
Speaker 2: hell has produced understandable euphoria and I challenge anyone not
1:40
Speaker 2: to listen and watch this footage and the raw emotion
1:43
Speaker 2: from the Foumiers in particular, and not be moved. Must
2:26
Speaker 2: I don't know what it is about those dads crying,
2:28
Speaker 2: you know, holding up their families, or why their children
2:31
Speaker 2: were away.
2:32
Speaker 3: It's just extraordinary and.
2:33
Speaker 2: You can see why they're aesthetic. You can see why
2:37
Speaker 2: Israeli is rejoicing, and by the wider world and here
2:40
Speaker 2: in Australia, we are.
2:41
Speaker 3: All so relieved.
2:43
Speaker 2: But whether perpetual peace is now broken out in Middle East,
2:47
Speaker 2: as President Trump has declared, we can hope, but I
2:50
Speaker 2: fear it's unlikely indeed, how much of the rest of
2:54
Speaker 2: the Trump piece deal gets implemented Beyond the release of
2:58
Speaker 2: the hostages. We know the bodies have still not been released,
3:03
Speaker 2: or that's far from clear. With Hamas reportedly engaged in
3:07
Speaker 2: a series of gun battles with rival groups inside Gaza,
3:11
Speaker 2: there's little sign that this terrorist death cult is going
3:14
Speaker 2: to give up its role in governing, let alone disarm
3:18
Speaker 2: and disband. In any event, there's very little to stop
3:22
Speaker 2: these killers just moving from Hamas to whatever the new
3:25
Speaker 2: governing body might look like in the future, and there's
3:28
Speaker 2: certainly no sign of any Arab state being prepared to
3:32
Speaker 2: take on peacekeeping duties inside the Gaza strip. Now, at
3:37
Speaker 2: the heart of this issue is something that few want
3:40
Speaker 2: to admit, that we're never going to get peace in
3:43
Speaker 2: the Middle East or anywhere else for that matter, unless
3:46
Speaker 2: there is an end to radical Islamism. That's the cancer here,
3:52
Speaker 2: that's the unspoken truth at the heart of the Middle
3:55
Speaker 2: East dysfunction. And after getting exactly what it wanted by
3:59
Speaker 2: killing Innocence on October seven, does anyone think these terrorists
4:03
Speaker 2: are suddenly going to stop? After all, they got the
4:07
Speaker 2: UN to formally recognize the Palace, city and state, didn't they,
4:10
Speaker 2: And now the West will hand them billions and billions
4:15
Speaker 2: to rebuild. This is the problem. So while we all
4:21
Speaker 2: credit Donald Trump for proposing the peace plan, and he
4:24
Speaker 2: should be credited and getting almost all of Israel's Arab
4:28
Speaker 2: neighbors to sign up, it's now the delivery of that
4:31
Speaker 2: plan that will require real effort, and that's where the
4:35
Speaker 2: West and not just these Arab.
4:37
Speaker 3: States need to step up.
4:40
Speaker 2: Because it wasn't France, the UK and Australia recognizing Palestine
4:44
Speaker 2: that changed things here. It was Trump's determination, his unpredictability
4:50
Speaker 2: that made the difference. And the fact that Israel attacked
4:54
Speaker 2: the Hummas leadership meeting in Qatar, well that's what changed things.
4:59
Speaker 3: That was the game changer.
5:01
Speaker 2: Having wages relentless war in Gaza, having largely destroyed Hezbolla
5:05
Speaker 2: and Lebanon, and the genius of those exploding pages, having
5:09
Speaker 2: also targeted Iran, it was the attack on Katar, the
5:13
Speaker 2: sanctuary for the Hamas leadership and the Hummas principal financial funder,
5:19
Speaker 2: that tip the scales.
5:20
Speaker 3: Fundamentally, this peace deal.
5:22
Speaker 2: Is a product of Israel's implacable determination to make all
5:26
Speaker 2: of its enemies suffer, meaning that this peace will only
5:31
Speaker 2: hold if all the entities previously pledged to Israel's utter
5:36
Speaker 2: destruction now admit defeat and I fear this is where
5:41
Speaker 2: it's going to be impossible, while radical Islamism governs these
5:46
Speaker 2: Islamic countries and the hearts of so many of the citizens.
5:50
Speaker 2: Perhaps the most bizarre product of the past couple of
5:53
Speaker 2: days has been the Alminesi governments claim that they have
5:56
Speaker 2: somehow facilitated this peace deal, Australia's recognition of a Palestinian state. Indeed,
6:04
Speaker 2: the Prime Minister even put out a statement claiming as much,
6:08
Speaker 2: and then he said this.
6:10
Speaker 7: Throughout this devastating conflict, Australia has consistently been part of
6:14
Speaker 7: the international calls for a ceasefire, for the return of hostages,
6:18
Speaker 7: and for the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
6:23
Speaker 2: Well, come on, PM, Australia is so important to the deal.
6:27
Speaker 2: Why was Australia not represented amongst the twenty or so
6:30
Speaker 2: nations gathered at last night's peace summit in Charmel Shaikh.
6:34
Speaker 2: Not only weren't Australia there, not even a minor representative,
6:38
Speaker 2: but our Prime Minister Lee was off on holiday. If,
6:41
Speaker 2: as he claims, Anthony Eweneesi was somehow responsible for the
6:45
Speaker 2: peace gathering, what was he doing being on holidays while
6:48
Speaker 2: it all happened. But more important than all of that
6:52
Speaker 2: is the domestic implications of the Trump peace deal, Because
6:55
Speaker 2: if peace really has broken out, and we all hope
6:58
Speaker 2: that's the case, what are we doing admitting yet more
7:02
Speaker 2: people into Australia from Gaza? If you've missed it today,
7:06
Speaker 2: that's the news that from the three thousand visas we've
7:09
Speaker 2: already handed out to Gazans, the n Easy government has
7:13
Speaker 2: confirmed that seven hundred of them will soon arrive in
7:16
Speaker 2: Australia over the next couple of weeks. A labor Serious
7:22
Speaker 2: Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke claims that the security checks
7:25
Speaker 2: on these people have been and I quote very thorough.
7:29
Speaker 2: He says, this isn't the same Tony Burke who personally
7:33
Speaker 2: skipped out to the airport and greeted the last loss
7:35
Speaker 2: of last lot of Gazans who arrived here not more
7:40
Speaker 2: than a week ago. But how could he possibly claim
7:43
Speaker 2: that any of these people have been thoroughly vetted as
7:46
Speaker 2: there's not a single Australian official in Gaza itself, and
7:49
Speaker 2: he's provided no detailed briefing on who's checked, whom and
7:54
Speaker 2: where they were checked. Whether it's claiming to have helped
7:57
Speaker 2: bring about peace or whether it's claiming to have done
8:00
Speaker 2: adequate security checks on people from a terrorist controlled war zone.
8:05
Speaker 2: This government's living in fantasyland. It's time for all of
8:09
Speaker 2: these Garzans, all of them, every one of them, to
8:12
Speaker 2: go home, and if they don't that these visas were
8:16
Speaker 2: never ever meant to be temporary, as Labor claimed. Paul
8:25
Speaker 2: and Hanson too is pushing for that, the opposition and
8:28
Speaker 2: asking a whole lot of questions here.
8:30
Speaker 3: I'll get to that a little lader in the show.
8:31
Speaker 2: But also this week, the Victorian Parliament's debating the establishment
8:36
Speaker 2: of a First Nation's Assembly that almost entirely mimics the
8:40
Speaker 2: Federal Voice that Victorians rejected at the referendum almost fifty
8:44
Speaker 2: five to forty five percent. Now, like the Voice, this
8:48
Speaker 2: Assembly will effectively be a third chamber of the Parliament,
8:53
Speaker 2: elected only by Aboriginal people and comprising only of Aboriginal people,
8:58
Speaker 2: with a say over all everything in the Victorian government,
9:01
Speaker 2: does not just Indigenous issues, even though only about one
9:06
Speaker 2: percent of Victorians claim Indigenous ancestry and identify as Indigenous.
9:12
Speaker 2: Whenever a bill is introduced in the Victorian Parliament, if
9:15
Speaker 2: this legislation's passed, it will have to be accompanied now
9:20
Speaker 2: by a statement as to whether it's an quote compatible
9:24
Speaker 2: with addressing the unacceptable disadvantage inflicted on First Peoples by
9:29
Speaker 2: the historic wrongs and ongoing injustices of colonialization. Now, each year,
9:37
Speaker 2: the Aboriginal Only Assembly will meet with government ministers and
9:41
Speaker 2: deepartmental secretaries and a whole lot of other officials to
9:44
Speaker 2: ensure that their work is consistent with advancing the interests
9:48
Speaker 2: of Airs peoples. At any time, the First People's Assembly
9:53
Speaker 2: will be able to make representations to ministers and authorities
9:57
Speaker 2: about matters of interest to Aboriginal peace, and they're supposed
10:01
Speaker 2: to get a response. It says that it must be
10:04
Speaker 2: provided within sixty days. There's even provision in the legislation
10:08
Speaker 2: for disagreements to end up before the Victorian Supreme Court.
10:14
Speaker 2: You know I'll be paying for that, don't you. Tax
10:16
Speaker 2: Payers will stump up for the government's legal team, and
10:19
Speaker 2: they'll also stump up for the legal team of the
10:21
Speaker 2: Aboriginal Assembly. Then there's the cost of this new race
10:26
Speaker 2: based body. Right now, it's budget said at seventy two
10:30
Speaker 2: million peradum, and it's going to increase year on year
10:33
Speaker 2: by two and a half percent. If you think Victorian
10:37
Speaker 2: government is already procedurally constipated, if you think it's ineffective, now,
10:43
Speaker 2: well think how much worse it's going to be if
10:45
Speaker 2: this legislation passes the parliament. I mean, this is a
10:49
Speaker 2: government that's turned Victoria into the basket case of Australia.
10:52
Speaker 2: Business is fleeing the state, crime out of control, and
10:56
Speaker 2: this kind of politically correct gesture politics is what the
11:00
Speaker 2: once great state of Victoria has been reduced to under labor.
11:06
Speaker 2: How dare you see Dollen say yes to a state
11:08
Speaker 2: level body that Victorians have already rejected at a federal level?
11:14
Speaker 3: How's that democratic?
11:16
Speaker 2: The Liberal National coalitions so that they'll vote against this legislation,
11:20
Speaker 2: but they won't tell us what they will do if
11:22
Speaker 2: it passes anyway, if elected, will the Liberals repeal it?
11:29
Speaker 2: We still don't know. All right, let's get the headlines
11:36
Speaker 2: out of camperdow Scartier's political reporter can Reddin Good evening.
11:41
Speaker 8: Australia and the United States have struck a deal to
11:45
Speaker 8: co produce thousands of missiles every year on Australian soil.
11:51
Speaker 8: There's a global backlog of production of missiles as people
11:54
Speaker 8: ramp up production.
11:55
Speaker 9: In response to the strategic circumstances.
11:58
Speaker 8: President Trump has openly called on allies to boost their
12:02
Speaker 8: domestic defense spending. This missile deal is the latest in
12:05
Speaker 8: a string of announcements by the Albanese government in just
12:08
Speaker 8: the past month, including billions to build the Henderson Defense
12:12
Speaker 8: Precinct in Western Australia, a new fleet of ghost Shark
12:15
Speaker 8: underwater drones, and a major defense treaty with Papua New Guinea.
12:20
Speaker 10: It just adds to what the Prime Minister will take
12:23
Speaker 10: to Washington.
12:23
Speaker 11: We are investing both in their industrial base and our
12:27
Speaker 11: industrial base.
12:28
Speaker 8: The opposition leader has announced her second reshuffle in just
12:32
Speaker 8: over a month, following the resignation of Andrew Hasty from
12:35
Speaker 8: her front bench. Tasmanian Senator Jonathan Dunniam becomes the new
12:39
Speaker 8: spokesman for Home Affairs. In a surprise move, Julian Lisa
12:43
Speaker 8: shifts to education, with Andrew Wallace the new Shadow Attorney General,
12:47
Speaker 8: while Victorian's second termer Zoe mackenzie has been promoted to
12:51
Speaker 8: Shadow Cabinet Secretary. Cameron Redden's Sky News Canberra.
12:57
Speaker 2: I thot I'll get to an update on Thoset. Dramatic
12:59
Speaker 2: scenes out of Bell we'll do that now. There was,
13:01
Speaker 2: of course, an armed gunman arrested during the afternoon after
13:05
Speaker 2: alleged involvement in the carjacking of two vehicles. And yet
13:09
Speaker 2: despite this, and I warn you the image is pretty shocking,
13:12
Speaker 2: the premiere is out there today claiming that the CBND
13:16
Speaker 2: is safe.
13:17
Speaker 3: Jentyman.
13:17
Speaker 2: How our reporter from Melbourne, Georgie Dickens said, walk us
13:20
Speaker 2: through what's happened?
13:21
Speaker 3: At first?
13:22
Speaker 2: I saw Georgie with some pretty horrific images of a
13:26
Speaker 2: van with blood all over his face picked up by police.
13:30
Speaker 2: What's happened here?
13:32
Speaker 6: Good evening to you, Peter.
13:33
Speaker 4: These were horrific scenes this morning in Melbourne. This armed
13:37
Speaker 4: gunman walking around the streets of Melbourne early this morning
13:41
Speaker 4: when we'd normally see people walking on their way to work.
13:44
Speaker 4: There was heavily armed officers scouring the CBD trying to
13:48
Speaker 4: track down this man from the ground. They were also
13:51
Speaker 4: tracking him from the air. Eventually he was apprehended, but
13:55
Speaker 4: they were quite chaotic scenes that we did see. It
13:59
Speaker 4: all started around order to eight this morning in West
14:01
Speaker 4: Melbourne when this man who was armed with a gun,
14:04
Speaker 4: confronted a driver, pointing the gun at their head, demanding that.
14:07
Speaker 6: They give him their vehicle.
14:10
Speaker 4: He's then proceeded to North Melbourne where a second carjacking
14:13
Speaker 4: took place. Again that driver confronted with a knife being pointed.
14:17
Speaker 6: Directly at them.
14:19
Speaker 4: He's then driven into the CBD where reports and I
14:22
Speaker 4: spoke to some people that saw him driving erratically. One
14:25
Speaker 4: person I spoke to said that they had to actually
14:27
Speaker 4: pull a pedestrian out of the way from the oncoming
14:30
Speaker 4: vehicle that was driving erratically around the streets. He's then
14:35
Speaker 4: proceeded on foot to a hotel in the busy center
14:38
Speaker 4: of Melbourne, and that is where workers as well as
14:41
Speaker 4: tourists were confronted. He pointed the gun at them at
14:44
Speaker 4: One worker I spoke to, who's a chef at a hotel,
14:47
Speaker 4: said he was simply walking out of the bathroom when
14:49
Speaker 4: he was confronted by this man with a gun. Now,
14:53
Speaker 4: thankfully there were so many police around at the time.
14:55
Speaker 4: It only took just over an hour from that first
14:58
Speaker 4: car jacking to when he apprehended for the police to
15:02
Speaker 4: actually take him into custody. And that's when we did
15:04
Speaker 4: see those pretty grim scenes of them actually taking the
15:07
Speaker 4: man out of the hotel. The forty eight year old
15:09
Speaker 4: he was handcuffed. He was lowered onto a stretcher then
15:12
Speaker 4: taken into hospital where he did suffer minor injuries. But
15:16
Speaker 4: Peter very confronting scenes for workers, tourists and shoppers this morning.
15:22
Speaker 2: And the first thing I think that goes through it
15:23
Speaker 2: in Melbournian's head is, please tell me Georgie that he's
15:26
Speaker 2: not out on parole because the bail in Victoria, sorry,
15:31
Speaker 2: the bail, not parole. That he's not out on bail
15:34
Speaker 2: because bail laws in Victoria are incredibly porous. What's been
15:38
Speaker 2: the reaction from Jacinta Allen and the Liberal opposition.
15:43
Speaker 4: Well, Jacinta Allen says that they do have the toughest
15:46
Speaker 4: bail laws in the country, and she says that they
15:48
Speaker 4: are cracking down on crime.
15:50
Speaker 3: But of course we.
15:50
Speaker 4: Must remember it was only a fortnight ago we saw
15:53
Speaker 4: those dramatic scenes of those muthes in a stolen vehicle
15:57
Speaker 4: driving a radically around Burke Street. Now that incident was
16:00
Speaker 4: only around a ten minute walk from where this incident
16:02
Speaker 4: took place. So it begs the question if Melbourne CBD
16:06
Speaker 4: is safe, And we put that exact question to the premiere.
16:09
Speaker 4: Despite these multiple incidents and multiple incidents of machete attacks
16:13
Speaker 4: around Melbourne. Just sing to Allen says that Melbourne CBD
16:17
Speaker 4: is safe. The opposition, of course, says that the government
16:20
Speaker 4: needs to do more.
16:21
Speaker 6: Here was their responses.
16:24
Speaker 5: The CBD of Melbourne is safe. The Victorian community has
16:28
Speaker 5: that protection from Victoria Police. As we saw this morning,
16:32
Speaker 5: Victoria Police moved swiftly dealt with this situation quickly. Again,
16:37
Speaker 5: I wish to reiterate that the Melbourne CBD is safe.
16:41
Speaker 5: I do understand though, too, that when incidences do occur
16:47
Speaker 5: that it would be incredibly distressing.
16:50
Speaker 12: It concerns me it was on the streets anywhere in Victoria.
16:53
Speaker 12: We've already seen tragic outcomes of someone being shot, two
16:56
Speaker 12: police officers being shot up in the north. This is
16:58
Speaker 12: the consequences when you have people who want to commit
17:01
Speaker 12: crimes in the state and the government that's let.
17:02
Speaker 13: It go too long.
17:05
Speaker 2: I'll over there, thank you, Georgie. I hear what it
17:07
Speaker 2: feels like. Melbourne is worse than Johannesburg at the moment,
17:10
Speaker 2: regardless of what the premier has got to say. Let's
17:12
Speaker 2: bring in my panel. I've got lots of other things
17:15
Speaker 2: to get across. Joining with our former liberal MP NA
17:17
Speaker 2: Cole Flint, national Affairs editor of The David Telegraph. Of course,
17:20
Speaker 2: Sky News host James Morrow, we'll leave the war zone
17:24
Speaker 2: of Melbourne if we can. Let's go back to the
17:26
Speaker 2: war zone of the Middle East. We've seen those images
17:29
Speaker 2: of the hostages returning home. I made the point at
17:32
Speaker 2: the top of the show, particularly watching the fathers in.
17:35
Speaker 3: Some of that footage.
17:36
Speaker 2: It's just harrowing to really grapple with what they have
17:40
Speaker 2: suffered over the last two years. The heavy price too
17:43
Speaker 2: paid by Israel, the release of over two thousand Palestinian prisoners,
17:48
Speaker 2: many convicted of terror offenses from the jails in Israel.
17:52
Speaker 2: The world's now turning, of course, to the rebuilding of Gaza.
17:55
Speaker 2: What comes next? I will look domestically at this. We
17:59
Speaker 2: have some of the highest numbers of Garzens that have
18:02
Speaker 2: come here during the war, supposedly on temporary visas, over
18:06
Speaker 2: three and a half thousand, Nicole Flint. We also know
18:10
Speaker 2: another seven hundred we're told by the government are coming
18:13
Speaker 2: here in the next few weeks, very little detail, but
18:17
Speaker 2: that's what we've been told.
18:18
Speaker 3: And what am I missing here?
18:20
Speaker 2: If we haven't got a war, if we are now
18:23
Speaker 2: in a period of peace, if we're going to rebuild
18:26
Speaker 2: in the world, will spend billions of dollars rebuilding gars
18:29
Speaker 2: and a coal Surely these Garzans in Australia need to
18:34
Speaker 2: be sent home.
18:38
Speaker 14: This is obviously a huge concern to all Australians, and
18:43
Speaker 14: all Australians deserve to know precisely what sort of visas
18:48
Speaker 14: the next raft of refugees are being offered, but also
18:53
Speaker 14: precisely the sort of visas that people from Gaza here
18:56
Speaker 14: are already on now. If they are temporary very visas
19:01
Speaker 14: or temporary concern visas, then there are a couple of
19:05
Speaker 14: really important requirements relating to those visas. First of all,
19:09
Speaker 14: that it is by invitation by the minister. So if
19:13
Speaker 14: we have any issues here, we know precisely who should
19:16
Speaker 14: be held to account, and that is Tony Burke, because
19:19
Speaker 14: my reading of these visas are the ones that pertain
19:22
Speaker 14: specifically to Palestinians where that they were by the explicit
19:26
Speaker 14: invitation of the minister. And one of the key components
19:31
Speaker 14: is if you have to be unable to return to
19:34
Speaker 14: your place of residence. Now, it will be very interesting
19:38
Speaker 14: to see how that clause is interpreted, because let's assume
19:42
Speaker 14: it will be generously interpreted to allow people to stay here.
19:48
Speaker 14: But Peter, this is a huge security concern. You've touched
19:53
Speaker 14: on this already. We don't know exactly what sort of
19:57
Speaker 14: security checks have been undertaken as well, So we've got
20:01
Speaker 14: people on specifically the type of visa. We don't know
20:04
Speaker 14: that they've been offered, or that they can stay here
20:06
Speaker 14: on them for how long, and what sort of rights
20:08
Speaker 14: and privileges they get. Also, we don't know the type
20:11
Speaker 14: of security checks that have actually been undertaken, because as
20:13
Speaker 14: you rightly pointed out, we don't have the stadiums on
20:16
Speaker 14: the ground over there.
20:19
Speaker 2: The government's not giving up much information, James. We know
20:21
Speaker 2: that the vast bulk then will not have been determined
20:24
Speaker 2: as refugees. They'll have applied for protection visas in Australia,
20:28
Speaker 2: they came in on temporary visas they get here, they
20:32
Speaker 2: start migrating their way through the court the decisions that
20:35
Speaker 2: are made by tribunals. But one of the provisions under
20:38
Speaker 2: international law is you must be in fear of your life,
20:41
Speaker 2: you must be in fear of persecution.
20:44
Speaker 3: Now peace is there and.
20:46
Speaker 2: Gaza is safe, there's no entitlement under international law for
20:51
Speaker 2: them to stay here. My concerns are that the government
20:55
Speaker 2: had this as a plan all the way along. I mean,
20:58
Speaker 2: Tony Burke goes out to the airport to greet many
21:01
Speaker 2: of them. He was asked about this yesterday.
21:03
Speaker 3: Have a listen.
21:05
Speaker 15: Are you expecting an increase in people from Gaza applying
21:09
Speaker 15: for visas to temporarily come here while Gaza is rebuilt.
21:12
Speaker 16: Look, we have a group of people who are already
21:16
Speaker 16: visa holders, and they are the main group that we've
21:21
Speaker 16: been looking at.
21:22
Speaker 3: Do you know how many people are likely to come here? Minister?
21:26
Speaker 16: The number of visa holders who are still there is
21:30
Speaker 16: in the order of six to seven hundred. That's and
21:35
Speaker 16: there has never been a group where we have conducted
21:39
Speaker 16: more security checks.
21:43
Speaker 9: James, Well, I'm sorry, but I just don't believe that.
21:49
Speaker 9: I feel like this is just a disaster waiting to
21:51
Speaker 9: happen here. We don't know anything about how you can
21:55
Speaker 9: do a security check. Are these people who've come out
21:58
Speaker 9: of Gaza. We don't have any representatives on the ground there.
22:01
Speaker 9: We don't know, you know anything really about these people.
22:06
Speaker 9: We do know though, that if you are going to
22:08
Speaker 9: get out of Gaza, then it is going to be
22:11
Speaker 9: done with the permission of Habas. So you know, you
22:14
Speaker 9: just have to think about the potential implications of that
22:17
Speaker 9: right there. But more to the point, you know, you've
22:21
Speaker 9: got this new nascent Palestinian state. Anthny Albinisi and Emanuel
22:26
Speaker 9: maccrawan and Hearstar were all recognized it. We've now got
22:29
Speaker 9: the peace deal put together by Donald Trump. I don't
22:33
Speaker 9: think in good conscience, really we should want to keep
22:37
Speaker 9: these people who've come here to escape the war now
22:39
Speaker 9: that the war is over, from going back to help
22:43
Speaker 9: rebuild the new Gaza Palestinian state. I mean, frankly, they
22:48
Speaker 9: should be wanting to go back to rebuild this Gaza,
22:53
Speaker 9: this Palestindian state that you know, we're always told, we've
22:56
Speaker 9: been told for decades and decades and decades that Palaestindians
22:59
Speaker 9: having this right to return to. So why wouldn't they
23:03
Speaker 9: want to go back now that it's safe.
23:07
Speaker 2: It has long been the practice of terror organizations in
23:09
Speaker 2: my government experience, that they once once you know, it
23:15
Speaker 2: served their purpose conflict, as it did in Afghanistan, as
23:19
Speaker 2: it obviously has here in Gaza, to get their leadership
23:23
Speaker 2: group out. We know most of them have been in
23:25
Speaker 2: Katar for some time but all their other operatives, it
23:28
Speaker 2: serves their purpose to move them to the next domail,
23:31
Speaker 2: the next theater of activity.
23:34
Speaker 3: That's not the Gaza Strip.
23:36
Speaker 2: That will be countries like Australia and elsewhere in the West.
23:39
Speaker 3: We've got a guard against that.
23:40
Speaker 2: But what concerns me also in addition to these people
23:44
Speaker 2: that could be leaving Gaza, Nicole, is the two thousand
23:49
Speaker 2: or so released from the jails of prisons of Israel.
23:53
Speaker 2: We know that some of those in that cohort will
23:55
Speaker 2: be free to East Jerusalem, about one hundred go to
23:58
Speaker 2: the West Bang about one hundred and thirty.
24:00
Speaker 3: And these are.
24:00
Speaker 2: People convicted of murder or weapons production, terror fences elsewhere.
24:06
Speaker 2: They are going to be deported likely, they say overseas.
24:11
Speaker 3: Now what worries me.
24:13
Speaker 2: Is the government is not ruling out whether they're coming
24:16
Speaker 2: to Australia.
24:17
Speaker 3: The new Shadow Home.
24:18
Speaker 2: Affairs Minister Nicole John o'duoniam has written to Tony Burke.
24:22
Speaker 2: He says he wants the Albertezer government to ensure that
24:25
Speaker 2: none of these former prisoners end up in Australia, and
24:30
Speaker 2: I think after the isis Brides fiasco, he's right to
24:34
Speaker 2: be concerned.
24:37
Speaker 14: After we saw a series of senior Labor government ministers
24:42
Speaker 14: dodging questions about the Isis Bride's return to Australia last week.
24:47
Speaker 14: We should have zero confidence in Labor that they can
24:50
Speaker 14: guarantee that they know who they are letting into our
24:55
Speaker 14: country and the security threat it may pose to Australians.
25:00
Speaker 14: This is also the government, of course, who despite repeated
25:04
Speaker 14: warnings from the High Court, managed to oversee the release
25:08
Speaker 14: of a couple of hundred criminal convicted criminal detainees. The
25:14
Speaker 14: question for the Australian people should be how do Labor
25:17
Speaker 14: always get it so wrong when it comes to ensuring
25:20
Speaker 14: that Australians are as safe as possible, particularly when the
25:25
Speaker 14: safety risk is completely clear.
25:32
Speaker 2: James, I want to go to the super backflip yesterday
25:34
Speaker 2: and the craven politics at play that the government announces it,
25:38
Speaker 2: of course when they know everyone's eyes are turned to Israel.
25:43
Speaker 2: Look deeper into it and you look at the relationship
25:46
Speaker 2: now obviously between the Treasurer and the Prime Minister that's
25:49
Speaker 2: not in good repair.
25:51
Speaker 3: The Prime Minister.
25:52
Speaker 2: Absends himself, the announcements made so no one can say
25:55
Speaker 2: you know where you rolled. The Prime Minister, of course
25:58
Speaker 2: is instrumental to see curing the peace in Israeli was
26:01
Speaker 2: nowhere near I mean Laiston, all the other twenty iver
26:05
Speaker 2: says leaders were there, but not our bloke. He's on
26:07
Speaker 2: a holiday on the island somewhere, which would I latter
26:11
Speaker 2: report about. We are anyway square this circle for me?
26:15
Speaker 2: What's going on inside the Albanezi government, Well.
26:18
Speaker 9: I think it's the tail as all as time, Peter.
26:21
Speaker 9: It's the tale of the rivalries between you know, your treasure,
26:25
Speaker 9: your upstart, ambitious treasure and the Prime ministry who wants
26:28
Speaker 9: to keep the government you know, intact together. I think
26:32
Speaker 9: the biggest concern though, that the Prime Minister has, and
26:35
Speaker 9: this is why he has you know, he would call
26:38
Speaker 9: this being orderly and processed, driven and all of this.
26:42
Speaker 9: But what it's really about is creating again as small
26:45
Speaker 9: a target as possible for the opposition, you know, to
26:49
Speaker 9: have something that they can really hook into. Not that
26:51
Speaker 9: the opposition has done a particularly great job of late
26:54
Speaker 9: picking up on issues that they should. I mean, you
26:58
Speaker 9: only have to look at how they perform question time
27:00
Speaker 9: last week and just let is surprise go hanging in
27:02
Speaker 9: the House of Representatives. But you know, I think that
27:06
Speaker 9: this is really the most cynical sort of political management
27:10
Speaker 9: here that we're seeing by the Prime Minister. I think
27:13
Speaker 9: Jim Chalmers will be aggrieved at this to some degree,
27:16
Speaker 9: and you know that may have reverberations down the road.
27:20
Speaker 9: You know, we've seen that movie before, but it's pretty
27:23
Speaker 9: sure to talk about that. But it is really it
27:26
Speaker 9: is really about media management and avoiding giving any red
27:29
Speaker 9: meat out that I think the Coalition you know, would
27:32
Speaker 9: be able to hook into. And the super changes. That
27:35
Speaker 9: was a big one because it went to the ethic
27:37
Speaker 9: of this government, which is that it doesn't understand business,
27:39
Speaker 9: it doesn't understand the private sector, it doesn't understand agriculture.
27:43
Speaker 9: And you know, the only thing that they think financial
27:46
Speaker 9: planning involves is getting a fat parliamentary pension and a
27:49
Speaker 9: job on a superannuation fund board.
27:54
Speaker 3: Or in a climate body. But I will like the
27:56
Speaker 3: pot climate body is. I linked.
28:00
Speaker 2: Tim Wilson fought on this as a campaign issue. Everybody
28:02
Speaker 2: else was shut down. The Coalition did not fight on
28:05
Speaker 2: this issue at the last election. And well, therein goes
28:08
Speaker 2: a lesson. I will make the point too. I'll leave
28:11
Speaker 2: you both there, but I'll make the point to my
28:12
Speaker 2: viewers there's a red Bridge pole out today. That says
28:15
Speaker 2: a majority of Coalition voters fifty four percent say dump
28:19
Speaker 2: net zero now, and only twenty four percent say no,
28:23
Speaker 2: we like net zero keep going out at Coalition fifty
28:26
Speaker 2: four to twenty four. I have to tell you, if
28:28
Speaker 2: you went inside the Liberal Party party room, you would
28:31
Speaker 2: flip those numbers the other way because the moderates are
28:34
Speaker 2: absolutely in the numbers in the party room, and they
28:38
Speaker 2: are the ones that wanted to stay. But that is
28:40
Speaker 2: a fight that is looming fast. Let's go now to
28:43
Speaker 2: the UK. Huge outrage there of the last couple of
28:46
Speaker 2: days about a graffiti style art use the term very
28:51
Speaker 2: loosely art exhibition that's been installed in the Canterbury Cathedral.
28:57
Speaker 2: The exhibits titled hear Us, created by this poet Alex
29:00
Speaker 2: Vellis and the curator jacquelbin Creswell, reportedly inspired by workshops
29:06
Speaker 2: with marginalized communities.
29:09
Speaker 3: Huge backlash.
29:11
Speaker 2: US Vice president Jodie Vance's weird elon Musk says it's shameful.
29:17
Speaker 2: I mean, this is the oldest cathedral in the United Kingdom.
29:22
Speaker 2: Sophie Elsworth from NewsCorp joins me. Now, But Sophie, I
29:25
Speaker 2: tell you what sometimes it's the little things that take
29:28
Speaker 2: off like a rocket, and jeez, people are cranky about
29:31
Speaker 2: this one.
29:33
Speaker 10: They are cranky, Peter. I mean, this is the UNESCO
29:36
Speaker 10: World Heritage Listed site and many people have argued that
29:40
Speaker 10: it's now been defaced. We're pretty not esthetically pleasing graffiti,
29:47
Speaker 10: many would argue. Now, there was a poll in the
29:49
Speaker 10: Times of London asking whether or not they approved of
29:53
Speaker 10: this installation inside the cathedral, and Peter, seventy nine percent
29:59
Speaker 10: of six thousan respondents said no, they did not approve
30:02
Speaker 10: of this. The backlash has been pretty far and wide
30:06
Speaker 10: here in the UK, many people questioning why earth did
30:09
Speaker 10: they decide to do it in such a sacred place
30:12
Speaker 10: and a special place for so many people.
30:18
Speaker 2: And of course, but I think people are thinking the
30:20
Speaker 2: West has lost its way. You can't fly the British
30:22
Speaker 2: flag in Britain anymore, and it looks like we're openly
30:26
Speaker 2: they're facing Christian places of worship. Yet you know, there's
30:32
Speaker 2: been those reports about a young girl or young girl sorry,
30:36
Speaker 2: being barred from running in a race because it goes
30:41
Speaker 2: past a mosque or there's some involvement of local Muslim authorities.
30:47
Speaker 3: I mean, that's also a huge concern, Peter.
30:51
Speaker 10: It is there's a lot of debates going on here
30:54
Speaker 10: in the UK. Many people proud to show that they're British,
30:58
Speaker 10: but they're effectively being shut down. I mean, we've had
31:01
Speaker 10: this flag issue where people have been putting up the
31:04
Speaker 10: Union Jack and Saint George's flags all around the country
31:07
Speaker 10: and being labeled as racists for doing so. So this
31:11
Speaker 10: is not going away. And many people are angry with
31:14
Speaker 10: the Labor government here in the handling of various issues
31:18
Speaker 10: such as the migration problem, and they're trying to show
31:21
Speaker 10: that they're proud to be British, but other people are
31:24
Speaker 10: arguing that they're simply being racist and looking to divide
31:29
Speaker 10: the population here.
31:30
Speaker 3: Peter, I'll love it there.
31:33
Speaker 2: Thank you, Sophie. Right after the rate we're joined by
31:35
Speaker 2: Liberal MPM. We're deeming with the news at Victorian schools
31:38
Speaker 2: are allowing kids to change their gender without parental consent.
31:43
Speaker 2: Class former White House Chief Information Officer, she's going to
31:47
Speaker 2: join me about the whole debate about digital ID and
31:51
Speaker 2: cybersecurity here obviously in Australia at the moment for an
31:54
Speaker 2: international conference. Welcome back to Victoria and shocking revelations at
32:04
Speaker 2: schools are allowing students to socially transitioned, so to change
32:07
Speaker 2: the gender without parental consent of any kind or indeed
32:11
Speaker 2: medical oversight. State Education Department document show where it is
32:15
Speaker 2: departmental policy for teachers and other school staff to use
32:19
Speaker 2: the concept of mature minor consent to enable children to
32:24
Speaker 2: socially transition in instances where it is deemed that parents
32:29
Speaker 2: might be unsupportive. Now, worse still, no data is being
32:32
Speaker 2: collected on how often this is happening, nor are schools
32:36
Speaker 2: involving medical experts in what could lead to life changing decisions.
32:41
Speaker 2: Victorian Liberal MP Moiradeeming is the person that helped uncover
32:46
Speaker 2: this practice.
32:48
Speaker 3: She joins me.
32:48
Speaker 2: Now, Mura, you have asked questions in the chamber, You've
32:52
Speaker 2: got material coming in from departments. If not let up
32:56
Speaker 2: on this issue when you've got responses back from the
32:59
Speaker 2: Education Minister and the Deputy Premier. Of course he is
33:02
Speaker 2: as well. He admits the department is pushing this, but
33:06
Speaker 2: they don't actually collect data on these children.
33:09
Speaker 3: Now that's a huge.
33:10
Speaker 6: Concern, absolutely, Peter.
33:14
Speaker 17: The fact is they're transferring what is essentially medical power
33:18
Speaker 17: of attorney from parents to the children without recording the
33:22
Speaker 17: names or the justification of the adults who make that decision.
33:25
Speaker 6: It's absolutely disgraceful.
33:30
Speaker 2: We've got Victorian parents completely in the dark, and we
33:33
Speaker 2: know from plenty of medical evidence. We know from the
33:36
Speaker 2: various studies here and overseas into the practice of allowing
33:40
Speaker 2: kids to socially transitioned, so to dress and use pronouns
33:45
Speaker 2: of the other sex, that if they go down this path,
33:50
Speaker 2: they could well end up and they often do end
33:52
Speaker 2: up in a surgical transition. Now that's a huge concern
33:57
Speaker 2: because teachers have got no clinical experience in so those
34:00
Speaker 2: kids are not it would seem from the guidelines, given
34:04
Speaker 2: access to medical or psychological support. And of course, once
34:07
Speaker 2: you shut parents out, they are blind to this. I
34:11
Speaker 2: guess until the kid comes home and says, now I
34:13
Speaker 2: want to go down the path of removing body parts.
34:17
Speaker 2: You're a parent of four kids, how do you feel
34:20
Speaker 2: about this.
34:23
Speaker 17: Well, Peter, at once it gets to that stage, of course,
34:25
Speaker 17: if a parent tries to intervene and hold any of
34:28
Speaker 17: those practices, they can.
34:29
Speaker 6: Be accused of family violence.
34:32
Speaker 17: And you've got to remember that it doesn't just impact
34:34
Speaker 17: that one child. So this means that teachers can change
34:37
Speaker 17: that child's name at school on all the documents, change
34:40
Speaker 17: who they get to go into the change rooms with,
34:42
Speaker 17: who they get to sleep in.
34:45
Speaker 6: A camp room with.
34:46
Speaker 17: So that means girls are being forced to have boys
34:49
Speaker 17: in their change rooms, to have boys in sleeping with
34:52
Speaker 17: them in their rooms at camps. It means they are
34:54
Speaker 17: forced to use wrong sex pronouns. It's absolutely catastrophic, not
34:58
Speaker 17: just for that child based on the the research that
35:00
Speaker 17: was mentioned, but the coercive environment that every other student
35:04
Speaker 17: lives under as a base as a result of this.
35:06
Speaker 17: And just remember, I was a teacher before this, and
35:09
Speaker 17: I've been advocating for this to be exposed and changed
35:13
Speaker 17: about fifteen years. It was the thing that made me
35:15
Speaker 17: want to get into politics because I'm a parent and
35:18
Speaker 17: a teacher, and so you know, a parent teacher interviews.
35:22
Speaker 17: I'd be sitting there with a child who during the
35:24
Speaker 17: day I was addressing by a different name, using different
35:27
Speaker 17: pronouns for was wearing a completely different uniform, was forcing
35:31
Speaker 17: other people to do the same, and yet when the
35:33
Speaker 17: parents are sitting in front of me, I'm expected to
35:35
Speaker 17: lie as a teacher and pretend none of that is happening.
35:38
Speaker 17: I will never lie to parents and I think it's
35:39
Speaker 17: absolutely disgraceful that this government has allowed ordinary parents who
35:43
Speaker 17: have not been proven in a court of law to
35:45
Speaker 17: be unfit parents to be lied to about something so
35:48
Speaker 17: significant about their own children.
35:52
Speaker 3: Yeah, looking call is cynical.
35:53
Speaker 2: But the reason why the government's not collecting their statistics
35:55
Speaker 2: is they don't want us to know when talk about
35:58
Speaker 2: and debate the extent of the issue here. And you
36:01
Speaker 2: know that report in the Australian Yesterday mentions a psychiatrist,
36:06
Speaker 2: a specialist in this area, who says there is no
36:08
Speaker 2: scientific consensus that allowing a child to socially transition improves
36:13
Speaker 2: their mental health. Indeed, the evidence is that if you
36:16
Speaker 2: allow them to socially transition, change the name and change
36:20
Speaker 2: how they dress, very often it leads them down the
36:23
Speaker 2: path of medical transition. So what changes, Moira, do you
36:29
Speaker 2: want to see happen?
36:32
Speaker 17: I think the government needs to make sure that if
36:35
Speaker 17: they believe in this policy, if they stand by it,
36:37
Speaker 17: if they think it's actually preventing suicides rather than contributing
36:42
Speaker 17: to suicides and young people, then they should stand by
36:44
Speaker 17: that policy and they should document who did it on
36:47
Speaker 17: what basis, so that if anything goes wrong, there's an
36:50
Speaker 17: accountability paper trail, right, But because that doesn't exist, and
36:54
Speaker 17: because they've obfiscated and they've made sure that you can
36:56
Speaker 17: actually destroy those records just seven years after the child
36:59
Speaker 17: leaves the school.
37:00
Speaker 6: I don't believe that they have good intentions.
37:03
Speaker 17: And the fact that they hide it from parents rather
37:05
Speaker 17: than deeming them unfit in a court of law where
37:07
Speaker 17: they would know what had happened and be able to
37:09
Speaker 17: challenge it.
37:10
Speaker 6: The fact is that tells us everything that we need
37:12
Speaker 6: to know.
37:13
Speaker 17: This government is anti parental rights, and that means they're
37:17
Speaker 17: anti child safeguards.
37:20
Speaker 2: And just quickly you'd be happy with the clarity of
37:24
Speaker 2: the anti chief minister Leophiniciaro saying, no bloke quote unquote,
37:29
Speaker 2: no bloke belongs in a women's prison and will not
37:33
Speaker 2: happen under me.
37:37
Speaker 6: She's an absolute heroine. I love it.
37:42
Speaker 2: Right, Well, you might need to get in your boss's
37:44

Speaker 2: or right, quick break after the break, we'll talk to
37:57
Speaker 2: a former White House expert about cyber safety, cybersecurity, but
38:02
Speaker 2: also importantly digital I d.
38:11
Speaker 11: You know every time we ask the question about why
38:13
Speaker 11: why are we doing this, it's just because we have.
38:16
Speaker 18: To zero net zero zero. Of course, I want to
38:19
Speaker 18: get to net zerum as soon as possible.
38:21
Speaker 11: I feel so strongly about protecting my home and my
38:23
Speaker 11: community that I had to stand up and take some
38:27
Speaker 11: action and push back against all of this stuff because

Speaker 1: These creams have gone crazy.
39:16
Speaker 3: I can hear that I need a fleet on it.
39:21
Speaker 19: Hey, good night, that.
39:24

39:27
Speaker 3: Could this business get bigger? Absolutely sweet?

39:53

39:58

40:51
Speaker 1: We visit the birth of a national constitution and amaze
40:55
Speaker 1: at it's unparalleled growth. Populat or perish.
40:59
Speaker 3: We can't change the past.
41:01
Speaker 13: Let's learn the right lessons and make the most of
41:04
Speaker 13: what we have.
41:05
Speaker 1: Australia a history continues tonight seven thirty on Sky News.
41:15
Speaker 2: Welcome back in Melbourne this week there are experts from
41:17
Speaker 2: around the world for cyber Con. That's the Australian Cyber
41:21
Speaker 2: Conference and it's a premier cybersecurity event. It brings professionals
41:26
Speaker 2: from all around the world and policy bankers as well
41:29
Speaker 2: to get their heads around some of the issues facing
41:32
Speaker 2: not just Australia but the world about cyber threats and
41:34
Speaker 2: other strategies. And it comes a bit of report that
41:37
Speaker 2: Australia's National Security Agency receives a cyber crime report every
41:41
Speaker 2: six minutes. Major threats to regarding es finanche targeting. We
41:46
Speaker 2: know that we can see that happening with our bank
41:47
Speaker 2: accounts and other things, but also the targeting of Australia's
41:50
Speaker 2: critical infrastructure and the involvement of organized crime groups. Here
41:57
Speaker 2: to give us some expert analysis, former White House Chief
42:00
Speaker 2: Information Officer and a keynotees figure at the conference, thereis
42:03
Speaker 2: a patent.
42:05
Speaker 3: I could talk to you all night because I just
42:06
Speaker 3: think this is the new frontier of warfare.
42:09
Speaker 2: Let's start at sort of government level, at national level,
42:14
Speaker 2: a good state actor like Australia against people who want
42:17
Speaker 2: to do as harm. It's not just getting my personal
42:20
Speaker 2: information as a citizen anymore, is it. It's potentially turning
42:23
Speaker 2: off our water supply or changing the way our traffic moves,
42:27
Speaker 2: or all the critical infrastructure we have, it's all now
42:31
Speaker 2: deeply embedded with digital componentry.
42:35
Speaker 21: No, you're right, it's about can I have remote access
42:38
Speaker 21: to critical infrastructure either to do surveillance, to try and
42:42
Speaker 21: get a leg up to look at intellectual properties. So
42:46
Speaker 21: how can I reverse engineer and make copies, you know,
42:48
Speaker 21: sort of shortcut the R and D process. Or it
42:52
Speaker 21: could be for something more sinister, which is turning things
42:55
Speaker 21: off and wreaking havoc on critical infrastructure.
43:00
Speaker 2: Talking to TOORISA and break or term my viewers and
43:02
Speaker 2: we were discussing what happened at the Defense Department in Australia.
43:06
Speaker 2: There were a whole lot of CCTV cameras put in
43:10
Speaker 2: and have been there for some time and obviously could
43:12
Speaker 2: photograph everyone moving in and out of the building. Some
43:15
Speaker 2: claim that they could turn on record to conversations, and
43:19
Speaker 2: only later on was it discovered that this had a
43:22
Speaker 2: very strong back end into Chinese government entities. But they
43:26
Speaker 2: were also Chinese cameras. I mean you can't overstate the problem.
43:31
Speaker 3: No, you can't.
43:32
Speaker 21: And when you think about something like this, where they're
43:34
Speaker 21: overhearing potentially conversations, getting recordings, photographs, associations, They've got a
43:41
Speaker 21: couple of things now. One is they have patterns of life,
43:43
Speaker 21: and so if I know where you've been and what
43:46
Speaker 21: your patterns are, I can predict with great certainty, probably
43:50
Speaker 21: better than you can yourself, what you're going.
43:51
Speaker 3: To do next.
43:52
Speaker 21: The next thing is deepke audio. Deep thke video is
43:55
Speaker 21: a thing now, and so we don't know how much
43:58
Speaker 21: footage they necessarily have that they could recreate and try
44:01
Speaker 21: to present something that looks very authentic.
44:04
Speaker 2: Talk to me about AI. You know, people are sort
44:07
Speaker 2: of dividing into two camps at the moment. It's all
44:09
Speaker 2: a friend and others who are it's all a foe.
44:12
Speaker 2: And business said, we've got to get our head around this.
44:15
Speaker 3: This is the future. It'll be terrific for productivity.
44:18
Speaker 2: But governments are always the lagged in terms of putting
44:22
Speaker 2: regulation in safeguards around these things, and it's changing so rapidly.
44:27
Speaker 2: I think, even with the best intentions, government is so
44:30
Speaker 2: far behind where AI is.
44:33
Speaker 3: Should we be concerned? Do we need to really get
44:35
Speaker 3: our skates on.
44:37
Speaker 18: We do.
44:38
Speaker 21: Really, this gets to we need governance and guardrails because
44:41
Speaker 21: the technology itself is a great tool if it's used responsibly.
44:46
Speaker 21: So we have to think about the data centers, the energy,
44:49
Speaker 21: the cooling. Then we have to think about the actual
44:51
Speaker 21: technology itself and how can we put in governance and guardrails.
44:55
Speaker 3: So it's a force for good.
44:56
Speaker 21: But we've seen by learning the hard way, and I'm
45:00
Speaker 21: not sure we've totally learned yet that social media and
45:03
Speaker 21: big tech algorithms without AI are already problematic.
45:08
Speaker 3: And again they can be so great.
45:09
Speaker 21: They can connect people, educate people, but at the same
45:14
Speaker 21: time it can be highly addictive and be problematic. So
45:17
Speaker 21: that governance and guardrails we're missing for social media and
45:19
Speaker 21: big tech, we absolutely need them for AI.
45:22
Speaker 2: What about digital ID, I mean, it's the big debate
45:24
Speaker 2: in the UK, it's a looming debate in Australia. There
45:28
Speaker 2: are people that are myself included concerned.
45:32
Speaker 21: Digital ID in and of itself. You could see where
45:35
Speaker 21: people would say, I think this is a good idea.
45:38
Speaker 21: So when people say I think we have to have
45:40
Speaker 21: digital ID to make sure that small children aren't getting
45:43
Speaker 21: access to things on the Internet that they shouldn't be
45:45
Speaker 21: exposed to. In a physical construct that does work because
45:49
Speaker 21: you can present ID, I can look at you, I
45:51
Speaker 21: can have a conversation and we move on. But on
45:55
Speaker 21: digital constructs it doesn't make as much sense. And the
45:58
Speaker 21: concern is once you have the digital ID there, now
46:01
Speaker 21: it can be hacked. Now it can be stolen, and
46:04
Speaker 21: then also will now that it exists, will it be
46:07
Speaker 21: used for things that it shouldn't be used for and
46:10
Speaker 21: wasn't intended to be used for? So ken it turned
46:12
Speaker 21: into something like in China they have a social score, yes,
46:16
Speaker 21: and part of that is linked to your digital ID.
46:19
Speaker 21: I'm not saying that countries every country that says I
46:21
Speaker 21: want to do a digital ID, that that's the eventual
46:24
Speaker 21: place it goes. But you can, you can worry and
46:26
Speaker 21: wonder and again ask the question do we have the
46:29
Speaker 21: right governance and guardrails that if we create it for
46:31
Speaker 21: this purpose, that it won't be stolen and misused, and
46:34
Speaker 21: that down the line somebody decides, well, since it already exists,
46:38
Speaker 21: why not use it for this.
46:40
Speaker 2: This man, there's a lot to talk about. Good luck
46:41
Speaker 2: for you big speech.
46:42
Speaker 3: Tomorrow, Well, thank you, it's so great to meet you.
46:44
Speaker 2: Nice to meet me too, right, quick break after the break.
46:47
Speaker 2: But let us abs data out of migration. It's clear
46:49
Speaker 2: the governments and doing nothing at all to cut back
46:53
Speaker 2: on high immigration.
46:54
Speaker 3: We'll get that money.
47:00
Speaker 2: Let's go to the crime in Melbourne. It's been a
47:02
Speaker 2: horror couple of days. Of course, you've heard what we've
47:04
Speaker 2: said about what happened in the city today with a
47:08
Speaker 2: gunman and two attempts at carjacking, so say police at
47:13
Speaker 2: certainly the claims. And of course on the weekend we
47:15
Speaker 2: had a father and son attacked and stabbed outside Crown
47:18
Speaker 2: Casino and five boys arrested, four out on bail, bail by.
47:25
Speaker 3: The next day in Hawthor of curse.
47:27
Speaker 2: Of course, another man yesterday prevented an alleged home invasion.
47:32
Speaker 2: He raced down the street, chased the criminal, police picked
47:35
Speaker 2: them up, and so much more.
47:38
Speaker 3: I could just do this every single night. Unfortunately.
47:40
Speaker 2: Let's bring in my panel now, Jared Holland from the
47:43
Speaker 2: Page Research Center and our contributor and good friend Terry Barnes.
47:48
Speaker 2: I've got to say to you, Terry, Victoria is broken.
47:51
Speaker 2: I mean, you can't dance around this manymore. Victoria is broken.
47:58
Speaker 15: Oh absolutely right, Peter, and it's broke on so many fronts.
48:01
Speaker 15: I mean, what we've seen today in Melbourne is so symbolic.
48:04
Speaker 3: Of the state of the state.
48:05
Speaker 15: It is absolutely falling to bits now if you take
48:10
Speaker 15: into account what the Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police said
48:12
Speaker 15: today in terms of the twenty five thousand shifts that
48:15
Speaker 15: police ships that had to be given away to police
48:17
Speaker 15: these Palestinian.
48:18
Speaker 8: Protests, you throw those in. I mean, where is our
48:22
Speaker 8: law and order? Where is our government?
48:24
Speaker 15: I've got such a shambalic government here on so many
48:26
Speaker 15: fronts you mentioned earlier, in terms of gender bending in schools,
48:30
Speaker 15: in what's happening on our streets, in terms of what's
48:33
Speaker 15: happening in our economy. I mean, if I was well,
48:36
Speaker 15: I am a Victorian, so I will say Victorian is
48:38
Speaker 15: no longer the state to be. If you're watching this
48:40
Speaker 15: rit of state, don't come here and try and make
48:42
Speaker 15: a living, try and make a business.
48:47
Speaker 2: The sadness there, though, Terry, is if the Pols are
48:49
Speaker 2: to be believed, the Libs will not win the next election. Yes,
48:52
Speaker 2: there's bark taken off the Premier just Inter Allen and
48:55
Speaker 2: the Liberals have improved their positions somewhat from the last election,
49:01
Speaker 2: but they're not on track to win. And this morning
49:04
Speaker 2: on three AW radio there was speculation that there'll be
49:08
Speaker 2: yet another leadership spill.
49:13
Speaker 15: Well, frankly, Peter, I don't think leadership change and Victoria
49:15
Speaker 15: is going to change anything unless the Victorian Liberals Victorian
49:19
Speaker 15: Coalition can get their act together and show that they
49:22
Speaker 15: have a real and genuine and comprehensive plan to deal
49:25
Speaker 15: with the Victoria's problems and show that they can save
49:28
Speaker 15: this state from labor.
49:30
Speaker 3: Labour's going to get back next year. It's just absolutely appalling.
49:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, and of course it's not just a crime position
49:37
Speaker 2: or a platform they need to have. They must have
49:39
Speaker 2: an economic agenda. There's been a change there. There's a
49:42
Speaker 2: new Shadow Treasurer, Jess Wilson. Let's hope we see some
49:45
Speaker 2: movement on that front because they've been appalling up until now.
49:48
Speaker 3: Let's go to migration.
49:50
Speaker 2: The latest AVS data is out and once again, Jared
49:54
Speaker 2: migrant intakes are at record levels. Governor said they'd cut
49:58
Speaker 2: the numbers. They have it and we've got all this
50:01
Speaker 2: pressure on our infrastructure. Enoughs enough here as well.
50:07
Speaker 22: Well, Peter, there's I think three reasons that are really
50:09
Speaker 22: driving the trends that we're seeing, and they're not excuses,
50:12
Speaker 22: but I think we need to understand it if we're
50:13
Speaker 22: to unpack this problem. That first is structural and it's demographic.
50:17
Speaker 22: We're on the back end of decades now of low
50:19
Speaker 22: birth rates, which means we are now an increasingly aging population,
50:23
Speaker 22: and we're seeing those labor shortages which are creating pinch
50:26
Speaker 22: points because we haven't correctly adapted with our skills pathway
50:29
Speaker 22: with students coming through, and we're preparing them for jobs
50:31
Speaker 22: that won't exist while relying on migrants for the jobs
50:34
Speaker 22: that we need now. The second, of course, is economic.
50:37
Speaker 22: We have seen the largest decline in living standards in
50:39
Speaker 22: the OECD. We've been in a per capita recession now
50:42
Speaker 22: for a number of years, and the government and the
50:44
Speaker 22: treasury is increasingly dependent upon the artificial demand and stimulus
50:48
Speaker 22: from mass migration in order to keep the economy chugging along,
50:52
Speaker 22: and with everything else so sclerotic at the moment, are
50:54
Speaker 22: they are desperate for that revenue. But the third one,
50:57
Speaker 22: just since I've gotten at a bit of trouble for
50:58
Speaker 22: for talking about the other day, and that is, as
51:00
Speaker 22: we know from red breach and caused Samarus that new
51:03
Speaker 22: migrants and new rivals when nationalized overwhelmingly.
51:07
Speaker 3: Vote for the Labor Party.
51:08
Speaker 22: So there's very little incentive for Labor to do anything
51:10
Speaker 22: about this mass migration crisis as far as they're concerned.
51:13
Speaker 22: They're bringing in future voters, and it's made it a
51:16
Speaker 22: bit of a hot topic for the Liberal Party to
51:17
Speaker 22: talk about at the moment. They don't want to alienate
51:19
Speaker 22: anyone who could be a potential center right voter. But
51:23
Speaker 22: unless we see some leadership in this space, we're going
51:25
Speaker 22: to It's the increasing pressure on housing, increasing pressure on infrastructure,
51:29
Speaker 22: and break down in that social cohesion that relates to
51:31
Speaker 22: the story we're just talking about.
51:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, and the liberal state and federal dance around this issue.
51:37
Speaker 2: I'm just reading a text from Margaret Thatcher's son is
51:41
Speaker 2: put out a tweet that says, my mother, Margaret Thatcher
51:43
Speaker 2: would respect Nigel Farage. She'd respect his beliefs without a
51:47
Speaker 2: shadow of the doubt. She was always concerned about the
51:50
Speaker 2: belief politician to read that is the conviction politician, and
51:54
Speaker 2: she would have agreed with him and his views about
51:56
Speaker 2: the size of a legal migration today. The same could
52:00
Speaker 2: be said here in Australia, Why terry have we only
52:03
Speaker 2: got about two percent of students in Australia two percent
52:08
Speaker 2: regularly attending class at some campuses. We know what they're
52:14
Speaker 2: taught in schools is not great. We know they're struggling
52:17
Speaker 2: with the curriculum. But what sort of hope do we
52:20
Speaker 2: have if it don't even turn up? Because it won't
52:22
Speaker 2: be so long for these young ones are running the country.
52:28
Speaker 3: Yes, I think that's right, Peter.
52:30
Speaker 15: And really I think what to young people need is hope.
52:32
Speaker 15: They need a sense that there is a future for
52:34
Speaker 15: them to grow up and they actually be educated for.
52:36
Speaker 15: And I think one of the problems that we have,
52:38
Speaker 15: and maybe COVID has contributed to this, is the fact
52:42
Speaker 15: that I think kids no longer see their education as
52:45
Speaker 15: being relevant in the way that maybe our generation and
52:47
Speaker 15: previous generations did. But certainly when they look and see
52:52
Speaker 15: the state of today, they look at the future, particularly
52:55
Speaker 15: in relations the rise of artificial intelligence in terms of
52:58
Speaker 15: its job taking potential. What have they got to live for?
53:01
Speaker 15: And then, really, I think one of the things our
53:04
Speaker 15: political leaders need to do is actually give those kids home.
53:06
Speaker 15: It doesn't matter if they're left or right, as long
53:08
Speaker 15: as they've got a vision that's optimistic and for the future.
53:15
Speaker 2: I'll leave it there, thank you gentlemen. I'm next James
53:19
Speaker 2: uc Ferson filean for Andrew Bolt.
