- 0:01Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to episode 55 of Revelio for October 15th, 2026.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I'm Aimee.
- 0:31Speaker 2: And I'm Nicole. And in this episode, we will be
- 0:36Speaker 2: discussing the behind-the-scenes magic of ghosts in the Harry Potter films.
- 0:41Speaker 2: But first.
- 0:44Speaker 2: You're listening to WWN, the Wizarding Wireless Network.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Now for the latest headlines.
- 0:54Speaker 2: So, the news. So Harry Potter themed Christmas light displays
- 0:58Speaker 2: are coming to Oxford Street in London this holiday season.
- 1:01Speaker 2: HBO Max and the New West End Company are partnering
- 1:05Speaker 2: for the display, which promises to be a festive celebration
- 1:08Speaker 2: of one of the world's most beloved stories, bringing a
- 1:11Speaker 2: host of Harry Potter inspired celebrations to shoppers, commuters, international
- 1:15Speaker 2: visitors and fans throughout the festive season. The display is
- 1:19Speaker 2: timed with the opening of the London Harry Potter store
- 1:21Speaker 2: on November 4th and, of course, the premiere of the
- 1:24Speaker 2: HBO show this Christmas. There is no official date for
- 1:27Speaker 2: the switch on of the lights as of yet.
- 1:32Speaker 1: That sounds cool.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it'll be really cool. Oxford Street's a really good
- 1:35Speaker 2: place for this display, too.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I don't really know, but it looks like they usually
- 1:42Speaker 1: do a Christmas light display in Oxford Street. So this
- 1:44Speaker 1: is kind of like an addition onto what they usually do.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Yep. Um, yeah, Oxford street's like a major, um, shopping
- 1:52Speaker 2: and also just visit like visitor street, tourist street. I
- 1:56Speaker 2: guess that's the word that tourist location. There we go. Um,
- 2:01Speaker 2: in London. So yeah, really good spot for it. Um, yeah, cool. Cool.
- 2:09Speaker 2: We also have two new of the Pocket Potter books
- 2:13Speaker 2: coming out in February, which I actually completely forgot about these.
- 2:18Speaker 2: But apparently they're still doing them. So one is going
- 2:21Speaker 2: to be for McGonagall, the O.G. McGee.
- 2:24Speaker 1: They must have listened to the last episode.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and like the people want it. Yeah, the people
- 2:29Speaker 2: want it. And then the other one is going to
- 2:32Speaker 2: be for the Weasley twins. So both of them are
- 2:34Speaker 2: coming out on February 23rd, 2027. Um, we talked about
- 2:39Speaker 2: these companion books in the past. Um, but just as
- 2:42Speaker 2: a reminder, because like I said, I kind of forgot
- 2:44Speaker 2: about them too. They are little character guides with info, facts, quotes,
- 2:49Speaker 2: that kind of thing. And they're very like centered for
- 2:52Speaker 2: like children, which is really nice to kind of introduce
- 2:54Speaker 2: them to the characters.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Side note, when I saw these showing up in news, um,
- 3:03Speaker 1: Every headline I saw was so misleading. It was like,
- 3:07Speaker 1: there's two new Harry Potter books coming out and adding
- 3:11Speaker 1: on to the series. I'm like, no. If there was,
- 3:15Speaker 1: I would have known about it before this random headline
- 3:19Speaker 1: on the internet. So what are we talking about? And
- 3:21Speaker 1: then I was like, oh, it's the pocket potters.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Clickbait title and like and also I hate that too
- 3:27Speaker 2: because it's like hello if you did your research you'd
- 3:29Speaker 2: see that this is just another book in a series
- 3:33Speaker 2: that has already come.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Out and it's companion books which we already have 10
- 3:37Speaker 1: billion of and every time a companion book comes out
- 3:40Speaker 1: we're not like.
- 3:41Speaker 2: It's a new Harry Potter book yeah so people yeah
- 3:46Speaker 2: well I'm sure those will continue with the clickbaity articles
- 3:51Speaker 2: so You heard it here first. It is not new
- 3:54Speaker 2: Harry Potter books. We are not expanding the series. It
- 3:57Speaker 2: is just more companion books.
- 3:59Speaker 1: It is not the ninth and tenth stories.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Randomly deciding to come out now.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Don't fall for it.
- 4:07Speaker 2: And a little bit of theme park news. There's been
- 4:09Speaker 2: some construction permit filings, which are giving more legs to
- 4:13Speaker 2: a Wizarding World expansion at Universal Epic Universe. The leaked
- 4:17Speaker 2: permit is for an over 95,000 square foot two-story building. Hmm.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Fan and theme park accounts that are far more versed
- 4:26Speaker 2: in these Orlando area permits than we are have said
- 4:29Speaker 2: that this particular permit is tied to the area adjacent
- 4:33Speaker 2: to the current Ministry of Magic section. So it's highly
- 4:36Speaker 2: likely this would serve as a second indoor ride attraction
- 4:40Speaker 2: for the Wizarding Paris area of Epic.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Which this has basically been rumored since Epic opened that
- 4:49Speaker 1: there's going to be a second ride in this area. So, yeah,
- 4:55Speaker 1: this is exciting. Yeah.
- 4:57Speaker 2: And I think we've talked about, too, them needing, like,
- 5:00Speaker 2: something else, too, just for even repeatability. I mean, at
- 5:03Speaker 2: the end of the day, there is only one ride
- 5:05Speaker 2: in that whole park. I'm trying to think because it's
- 5:09Speaker 2: harder for me to remember since I've only been to
- 5:11Speaker 2: Epic once at this point. Yeah. which I like need
- 5:15Speaker 2: to rectify now that I'm in proximity of it. Um,
- 5:19Speaker 2: I need to rectify that, but, um, I'm trying to
- 5:22Speaker 2: think like, where would they put an entrance back there
- 5:27Speaker 2: into something else? Cause I feel like it was all
- 5:31Speaker 2: closed off.
- 5:33Speaker 1: You could, um, you know, like behind the Cirque Arcanut tent,
- 5:40Speaker 1: Kind of by the exit of Sir Arcanew, there could
- 5:44Speaker 1: be an entrance to something else back there. Because there's no, like,
- 5:47Speaker 1: shop facades there. Right. It's just the walls with the
- 5:50Speaker 1: different posters and stuff on them. And then, like, the
- 5:54Speaker 1: little cart of.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Oh, the animals. Fantastic Beasts.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Fantastic Beasts merch. I was trying to say Beasts and
- 6:02Speaker 1: merch at the same time.
- 6:03Speaker 2: The Fantastic Meats.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Yeah, so maybe there?
- 6:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Or even, like.
- 6:11Speaker 1: On, like, the end of Place Caché, you have, like,
- 6:17Speaker 1: the French Ministry entrance, like, to the left of that.
- 6:21Speaker 2: There's, like, a little stroller.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Parking thing there now, but maybe, like, around in that area.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Right, and regardless of where the building goes up, doesn't
- 6:33Speaker 2: really mean that that's where, like, the entrance needs to be,
- 6:36Speaker 2: because obviously they would build a queue and, like, all
- 6:38Speaker 2: that kind of stuff, too, so... Huh. I'm yeah. I
- 6:43Speaker 2: don't really have any predictions or ideas of like what
- 6:46Speaker 2: the ride could be.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Um, I know the thing that everybody keeps saying is
- 6:52Speaker 1: the broomstick ride.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Because I do remember there was quite a while ago,
- 6:58Speaker 1: they had put in like a patent for a broomstick
- 7:02Speaker 1: ride vehicle and then never used it. I know a
- 7:05Speaker 1: lot of people speculate that that was originally going to
- 7:08Speaker 1: be in this section. Um, and got cut. So maybe, yeah,
- 7:16Speaker 1: possibly something like that. Yeah.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I think that'd be, that'd be cool. Well, I guess
- 7:22Speaker 2: we'll see, but I do think that, yeah, that this
- 7:25Speaker 2: is promising that there will be a little addition expansion.
- 7:28Speaker 2: I think we'll see a lot of probably in the
- 7:30Speaker 2: next couple years, I feel like we'll probably see a
- 7:33Speaker 2: lot of expansions. I'm an epic universe and like all
- 7:36Speaker 2: the lands.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Cause they already have the dark universe one planned.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Um, Yeah. I think the Nintendo area and Isle of
- 7:49Speaker 1: Berk are pretty well packed and fleshed out. I think
- 7:55Speaker 1: that the other two, Dark Universe and Paris, maybe didn't
- 8:02Speaker 1: get as fully fleshed out as the other areas did
- 8:08Speaker 1: prior to opening. But that's okay because that just means
- 8:13Speaker 1: you add stuff and then people come back. Um, and
- 8:17Speaker 1: I could see them adding another portal at some point
- 8:20Speaker 1: as well, but yeah, it's exciting. Love new things. Yeah.
- 8:26Speaker 2: I'm still hoping for an Oz portal.
- 8:27Speaker 1: That'd be really cool. Me too.
- 8:29Speaker 2: That was like the biggest like rumor, like when Wicked
- 8:31Speaker 2: and everything was coming out and I like, obviously now
- 8:34Speaker 2: with that being over, I guess that whole thing could
- 8:37Speaker 2: die down, but I also, yeah, I'm sorry for that.
- 8:42Speaker 1: If you think about how beloved the wizard of Oz
- 8:45Speaker 1: is like.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Oh yeah, for sure. And the whole universe, like for sure. Um, yeah.
- 8:53Speaker 2: So I'm really hoping that that ends up being another portal,
- 8:56Speaker 2: but yeah, I would love that. Well, I guess we'll
- 9:00Speaker 2: see what happens, but, um, and then, yeah, we did
- 9:04Speaker 2: also get a premier date for a season three of
- 9:06Speaker 2: wizards of baking, um, The show will premiere new episodes
- 9:10Speaker 2: on November 4th, which seems to be a big day
- 9:13Speaker 2: because wasn't that when the lights are going up for
- 9:16Speaker 2: the Oxford Street?
- 9:17Speaker 1: The London store.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Something about November 4th.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:20Speaker 2: So the new episodes will premiere, like I said, on
- 9:22Speaker 2: November 4th on the Food Network and on HBO Max.
- 9:27Speaker 2: This season will feature Hogwarts house teams and celebrate moments
- 9:30Speaker 2: from the films with its challenges, as we've seen in
- 9:33Speaker 2: the previous seasons. And the first episode's challenge theme is
- 9:36Speaker 2: memorable moments. So, yeah, I need to still watch season two.
- 9:43Speaker 2: We do. We've talked about this before. I really loved
- 9:47Speaker 2: season one, so I don't know why I fell off
- 9:49Speaker 2: watching season two. Maybe just life got too busy. But
- 9:52Speaker 2: I do really enjoy the show, and I'm really curious
- 9:56Speaker 2: to see like, how, with every season, how they, like,
- 10:00Speaker 2: are still coming up with challenges to do.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Maybe I'll put that on today when I'm trying to
- 10:06Speaker 1: get some knitting done.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a very, like, cozy background show, yeah.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 10:13Speaker 2: And it won't really spoil it because I never really
- 10:15Speaker 2: saw who the winners were either, so I won't even
- 10:17Speaker 2: really be spoiled. It's not like it was this big,
- 10:20Speaker 2: you know, compared to other, I guess, challenge shows.
- 10:25Speaker 1: It's all new to me.
- 10:31Speaker 2: And yeah, that's kind of it for the news right now.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Something will probably happen in the next couple days.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Yeah, always does. Want more Revelio? Join our Patreon for

- 11:04Speaker 1: For our main discussion, we wanted to talk about the
- 11:07Speaker 1: behind the scenes of the making of the ghosts in
- 11:11Speaker 1: the Harry Potter films. You know, last Halloween, last spooky season,
- 11:16Speaker 1: we talked about, like, the stories behind each ghost. So
- 11:20Speaker 1: we wanted to focus this more on the filmmaking aspect
- 11:24Speaker 1: of some of the choices made to translate them to
- 11:28Speaker 1: the screen. So here we are. Shockingly, not a ton
- 11:34Speaker 1: of information about this out there, which, like, someone needs
- 11:38Speaker 1: to go and, like, I don't know. There's got to
- 11:41Speaker 1: be behind the scenes footage of this and we need
- 11:44Speaker 1: more because I feel like this could be a really
- 11:47Speaker 1: fascinating process and how they did this. And I would
- 11:49Speaker 1: love to just watch the step by step. But some
- 11:55Speaker 1: general information on how they were made. The ghosts in
- 11:58Speaker 1: the Harry Potter films were created with a mixture of
- 12:02Speaker 1: actor performances, visual effects, and the layering or compositing of footage.
- 12:09Speaker 1: So basically what they did is they used the method
- 12:13Speaker 1: of filming the actor portraying a ghost in a green
- 12:16Speaker 1: or blue screen room by themselves. So they were not
- 12:21Speaker 1: filming with the other actors in the scene. And this
- 12:25Speaker 1: separate filming really allowed them to key out the background
- 12:28Speaker 1: in post-production and layer the ghost into the scene, which
- 12:32Speaker 1: then in turn really lets them separate that actor from
- 12:36Speaker 1: the background. Um, it lets them drop the opacity on
- 12:41Speaker 1: the ghost without affecting other things. They can add filters
- 12:45Speaker 1: and light to the ghost figure. Um, and really it's
- 12:50Speaker 1: all about kind of isolating that one thing in the
- 12:53Speaker 1: scene rather than ruining your other footage. So, um, On
- 12:59Speaker 1: top of how they filmed it, obviously some other things
- 13:02Speaker 1: come into play. Makeup and costuming is really big when
- 13:06Speaker 1: you're trying to make these ghostly figures. So the costuming
- 13:13Speaker 1: for the ghosts in the films in particular is really
- 13:17Speaker 1: interesting because they are depicted wearing clothing that is very
- 13:24Speaker 1: noticeably old, right? So that already adds to us... as
- 13:29Speaker 1: the viewer being like, okay, well, they're not alive at
- 13:33Speaker 1: this time in the nineties. They're clearly from past, um, centuries.
- 13:39Speaker 1: So it also, um, lets you kind of play with
- 13:45Speaker 1: the color of the costumes. So if you're going for
- 13:47Speaker 1: that eerie ghostly look, you would notice pretty much all
- 13:52Speaker 1: of the ghost costumes are shades of gray and silver,
- 13:57Speaker 1: very muted, um, to help with that more ghostly kind
- 14:03Speaker 1: of look to it. So I wanted to talk about
- 14:07Speaker 1: each of the ghosts that we actually see on screen, um,
- 14:11Speaker 1: and some of the visual choices made with them. So
- 14:16Speaker 1: up first we have nearly headless Nick, who is one
- 14:20Speaker 1: of the first ghosts that we see in the films.
- 14:24Speaker 1: We know obviously he's portrayed by John Cleese. Um, John
- 14:28Speaker 1: Cleese actually recently gave an interview about the filming of
- 14:32Speaker 1: Harry Potter, which was interesting because I feel like we
- 14:35Speaker 1: haven't heard from him on this in a very long time.
- 14:38Speaker 1: So kind of cool to get some quotes about this. Um, and, um,
- 14:43Speaker 1: he basically noted that it was really weird to film
- 14:46Speaker 1: these because he was isolated away from the cast. As
- 14:50Speaker 1: I mentioned, you know, they filmed all the ghosts in
- 14:52Speaker 1: these separate blue screen, green screen rooms. Um, So they
- 14:57Speaker 1: didn't get to really interact with the rest of the
- 14:59Speaker 1: cast so much.
- 15:02Speaker 2: So I wonder if, sorry, I was just thinking like
- 15:04Speaker 2: if that's part of that is like a product of
- 15:08Speaker 2: the time in which these films were filmed versus like
- 15:14Speaker 2: how technology has like changed. And I think of just
- 15:18Speaker 2: a lot of, films that have happened since where we've
- 15:22Speaker 2: utilized motion capture, which some of those films were a
- 15:27Speaker 2: long time ago. Obviously, we saw that with Lord of
- 15:29Speaker 2: the Rings and Gollum and stuff, but with this is
- 15:32Speaker 2: obviously different, right? Because you're talking about you're trying to
- 15:34Speaker 2: do a ghost, so you really don't want anything else
- 15:36Speaker 2: to interfere with then the layering you have to do
- 15:38Speaker 2: to make them look like a ghost. But I wonder
- 15:41Speaker 2: if in the technology that we have now with filming,
- 15:44Speaker 2: if when they film the ghosts and stuff for the show,
- 15:46Speaker 2: if they can do this differently this time around and
- 15:52Speaker 2: still achieve like the same effect, but not have to
- 15:56Speaker 2: isolate the actors in that way.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:59Speaker 1: It'll be interesting to see if we get any behind
- 16:01Speaker 1: the scenes of this. I would love to see what
- 16:03Speaker 1: that difference is. I would assume just like based on,
- 16:08Speaker 1: I don't have a ton of knowledge of how CGI works.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I'm not, that's not my area. But from what I
- 16:16Speaker 1: understand from, like blue screen versus motion capture is, I
- 16:27Speaker 1: feel like motion capture you and maybe use for things
- 16:31Speaker 1: that aren't quite a one-to-one copy of the actor. Right.
- 16:37Speaker 2: You're trying to like capture their expressions, their movement to
- 16:40Speaker 2: then put it on a CGI character.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Right. Whereas like the ghosts, as they were filmed, they
- 16:46Speaker 1: really filmed it to be the actor. but just translucent
- 16:52Speaker 1: like a ghost right yeah so maybe that's why because
- 16:56Speaker 1: like you said that that technology was there so i
- 17:01Speaker 1: don't know if that was just a a choice that
- 17:04Speaker 1: they made i guess they could have recreated the actor
- 17:08Speaker 1: themselves as cgi with motion capture but i don't know.
- 17:12Speaker 2: I don't know And I guess, I mean, I'm glad
- 17:14Speaker 2: they didn't do that, though, because I just don't think
- 17:16Speaker 2: it would look right. Like, if you have a character
- 17:18Speaker 2: that's already CGI, they're already CGI. Right. They're already going
- 17:21Speaker 2: to look kind of CGI, even if, how many times
- 17:24Speaker 2: can I say CGI in a sentence? But even if
- 17:26Speaker 2: CGI has come so far that we can have things
- 17:29Speaker 2: look very realistic, it's still never going to look, like,
- 17:32Speaker 2: completely realistic. Right. But then I also think about, like,
- 17:34Speaker 2: as a big fan of horror films, there's ghosts in
- 17:39Speaker 2: a lot of films. Um, that looks very realistic. And
- 17:44Speaker 2: I don't know if they necessarily, I'm curious how they
- 17:47Speaker 2: filmed it or did it there if it was similar.
- 17:50Speaker 2: And I just think about, especially films like this, where
- 17:53Speaker 2: you've got a lot of child actors and stuff like that,
- 17:55Speaker 2: just the benefit of actually acting out a scene, like
- 17:59Speaker 2: with somebody there for everybody is like just easier. And
- 18:04Speaker 2: I think usually produces a better result than having to
- 18:07Speaker 2: do things separate.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:09Speaker 2: But that's really interesting. I never knew that that's how
- 18:11Speaker 2: they filmed them.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Yeah. So John Cleese, his quote about this, he says, quote,
- 18:22Speaker 1: is special effects shooting, which is not really interesting. I
- 18:27Speaker 1: said to the director, Christopher Columbus, after a take, was
- 18:29Speaker 1: that any good? And he'd say, I don't know. One
- 18:33Speaker 1: special effects person said to me, Would you look surprised
- 18:36Speaker 1: on the next take? And I did. He said, that
- 18:38Speaker 1: was really good. Can you look surprised at half that speed?
- 18:42Speaker 1: So basically, I guess he's just saying like, it's just
- 18:44Speaker 1: a weird, like, no one really knows what the end
- 18:50Speaker 1: performance or results going to look like because you've only
- 18:52Speaker 1: got one piece of the puzzle. You've got him in
- 18:55Speaker 1: this little box of a room. Yeah.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Right. That's what I was saying. It's like, I
- 19:00Speaker 2: just feel like you always, it's just easier for everyone
- 19:03Speaker 2: involved when you actually can be acting off of somebody.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 19:10Speaker 2: And I wonder if too, like as the, and I
- 19:14Speaker 2: don't know if we have this later, but if even
- 19:17Speaker 2: the way that they did this changed over the course
- 19:20Speaker 2: of the films too, because obviously we've got, like you said,
- 19:25Speaker 2: Nearly Headless Nick is one of the first ghosts we see.
- 19:27Speaker 2: We get him right at the beginning in Sorcerer's Stone,
- 19:30Speaker 2: but then, like, I think if you look at Nearly
- 19:34Speaker 2: Headless Nick in Sorcerer's Stone and then compare it with
- 19:38Speaker 2: the effects of, like, Helena Ravenclaw, yeah, like, later on,
- 19:44Speaker 2: it is different. It is different. And she does look more,
- 19:48Speaker 2: you can tell the technology had changed already yeah so
- 19:53Speaker 2: maybe that's something they even also were able to rectify
- 19:56Speaker 2: over the course of the films with technology advanced and I.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Wish that we had gotten more of the ghosts throughout
- 20:02Speaker 1: the films just like in the background to see that
- 20:06Speaker 1: evolution more but yeah Um, so Nick's costume, again, was
- 20:13Speaker 1: made out of gray to really blend into the effects
- 20:16Speaker 1: that were later being added. Um, interestingly, and I feel
- 20:22Speaker 1: like this kind of applies to all the ghosts, um,
- 20:25Speaker 1: the costumes and the time period that the costumes sort
- 20:28Speaker 1: of fall into doesn't quite line up with what we
- 20:31Speaker 1: know of the ghost backstory, which makes sense because nobody
- 20:34Speaker 1: knew the ghost backstory when the first film was made.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Right.
- 20:38Speaker 1: So, you know, we can excuse this. Uh, but Nick
- 20:43Speaker 1: died in 1492, but his costume really has a lot
- 20:50Speaker 1: of 16th century fashion elements to it. Um, in particular
- 20:56Speaker 1: the rough and I fell into a deep rabbit hole
- 20:59Speaker 1: about men's fashion in the 16th century.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Like the around his neck, like the like ruffle dress thing.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, so apparently they were super popular in
- 21:13Speaker 1: the mid-1500s. So after Nick's death is when those would
- 21:17Speaker 1: have come around. But you can understand why they did it.
- 21:21Speaker 1: It's a good visual. And if I'm remembering correctly, even
- 21:28Speaker 1: in the books, don't they mention the ruffle around his neck?
- 21:32Speaker 2: I think so. And I think it works well for
- 21:35Speaker 2: his character, too, because obviously a big focus of his
- 21:38Speaker 2: character is His neck.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Yeah, so to kind of like bring attention to it,
- 21:46Speaker 2: but also kind of like cover it up a little bit. Yeah.
- 21:49Speaker 2: And a little gruesome because, you know, he's nearly severed
- 21:53Speaker 2: at the neck, so.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Yes. Yeah, but the detail, I mean, the details in
- 22:01Speaker 1: everything in these films is always amazing, but the details
- 22:04Speaker 1: in the costume, again, is... just, there's so much there. Um,
- 22:12Speaker 1: the button details going down the front. Um, he's got
- 22:17Speaker 1: like these like pantaloon type things going on.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Um, Well, I think even just like all the like
- 22:28Speaker 2: lace and stuff too, it looks like there's like some
- 22:30Speaker 2: lace around the like cuff, the wrist cuff, which again too,
- 22:36Speaker 2: I think just like you mentioned the level of detail
- 22:39Speaker 2: and just different fabrics, it looks like there's also some
- 22:41Speaker 2: like velvet and stuff in the costume. And I think
- 22:45Speaker 2: at the end of the day, like they then made
- 22:47Speaker 2: them transparent. So I think some of this detail then
- 22:52Speaker 2: doesn't necessarily translate to Yeah. Once you put the effect
- 22:57Speaker 2: on it.
- 22:58Speaker 1: But you got to figure too, if you didn't have
- 23:01Speaker 1: all these different fabrics and textures, how flat this would
- 23:06Speaker 1: look when you turn it transparent. So it's like, it's
- 23:10Speaker 1: funny because turning it transparent takes away a lot of
- 23:12Speaker 1: the detail. But if you had none of this detail,
- 23:16Speaker 1: nothing would translate once it was translucent.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Right, right. But that's why I think it's really nice
- 23:22Speaker 2: that we have like things like the studio tour and
- 23:24Speaker 2: Harry Potter exhibitions and stuff so that these costumes can
- 23:27Speaker 2: be on display and can be fully appreciated for all
- 23:31Speaker 2: of the detail that the costume designers put into it
- 23:34Speaker 2: that you wouldn't necessarily, you know, see.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:38Speaker 2: For sure. Yeah.
- 23:43Speaker 1: So I know whenever we talk about movie making and effects,
- 23:48Speaker 1: we always harp on the whole Practical versus digital. I
- 23:54Speaker 1: just want to say that the ghost in John Cleese
- 23:57Speaker 1: as Nick in particular is a really great example of
- 24:00Speaker 1: doing this correctly with a real actor and practical makeup
- 24:06Speaker 1: combined with those digital effects to make it seem very realistic.
- 24:10Speaker 1: So he actually wore prosthetics on his neck to create
- 24:15Speaker 1: the partially severed look. So that was not added later.
- 24:19Speaker 1: That was... on him while he was filming, which again,
- 24:23Speaker 1: I think really adds to the realness of, um, how
- 24:27Speaker 1: this character ends up looking. So, um, so nearly headless
- 24:34Speaker 1: Nick only appeared in the first two films. He was
- 24:38Speaker 1: reportedly supposed to be in the fifth film, which we
- 24:42Speaker 1: know what that scene would have been, and they should
- 24:45Speaker 1: have kept it of him talking to Harry after serious dies. Um,
- 24:51Speaker 1: But that was cut at the last minute. So no
- 24:55Speaker 1: Nick in movie five, unfortunately. Yeah.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Well, hopefully we'll get that scene in the TV series.
- 25:04Speaker 1: I hope so. And I feel like that's very much
- 25:07Speaker 1: on brand for HBO. Like I feel like that's a
- 25:10Speaker 1: theme that they're going to want to explore the after
- 25:13Speaker 1: death stuff. So yeah.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:19Speaker 1: So next up, we've got the Grey Lady, or as
- 25:23Speaker 1: we know her, Helena Ravenclaw. So she was portrayed by
- 25:28Speaker 1: two actresses. That would be Nina Young, who had the
- 25:32Speaker 1: role in Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets. And then
- 25:36Speaker 1: Kelly MacDonald stepped in in Deathly Hallows Part 2. So
- 25:43Speaker 1: the Grey Lady got two different costumes for these two
- 25:45Speaker 1: different actresses as well. which is really interesting to look
- 25:49Speaker 1: at the difference in these two costumes. The first is
- 25:52Speaker 1: a lot more elaborate, while the second one, seen in
- 25:56Speaker 1: the last film, is a much more simple, yet still
- 26:00Speaker 1: elegant gown. Both are made in shades of gray, and
- 26:05Speaker 1: they are definitely from different time periods. Yeah, the one
- 26:13Speaker 1: from the first two films... Got a lot of ruffles
- 26:19Speaker 1: going on in those puffed sleeves.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't... Actually, I think that I actually like
- 26:26Speaker 2: the second costume more.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I do, too.
- 26:31Speaker 2: And then I think, like, this first one, too, there's
- 26:33Speaker 2: just so many, like... I don't know, like, if they're
- 26:37Speaker 2: meant to be, like, rips and tears, like, in the skirt.
- 26:40Speaker 1: It looks like prison stripes to me.
- 26:44Speaker 2: It does.
- 26:44Speaker 1: It does.
- 26:45Speaker 2: And I think because it's the same shade of gray,
- 26:48Speaker 2: like it's giving like Azkaban high fashion. Yeah.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:58Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean, I guess for the time
- 27:00Speaker 2: period it works, but it's just, I think it's, I
- 27:05Speaker 2: don't know.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Well, okay. What year did Helena die?
- 27:10Speaker 2: Right. This might also, I guess, be another situation of
- 27:13Speaker 2: the time period's really not.
- 27:16Speaker 1: So Helena Ravenclaw died in the early 11th century, so
- 27:20Speaker 1: sometime between 996 and 1000 AD, which I'm no fashion expert,
- 27:31Speaker 1: but the first one looks more, it almost looks more
- 27:36Speaker 1: Elizabethan to me.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Yeah, because I think it would have been the further
- 27:42Speaker 2: back you went, I actually think stuff would have been
- 27:45Speaker 2: more simplistic.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Yes.
- 27:46Speaker 2: And then as you got more into later years would
- 27:52Speaker 2: be a little bit more elaborate. Agree.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Yeah, because the second costume has those long sleeves, which
- 28:00Speaker 1: to me, this screams medieval times. This looks more like
- 28:06Speaker 1: it's like they corrected... The fashion once they realized what
- 28:10Speaker 1: year she would have died. Yes, I agree.
- 28:13Speaker 2: I think her second dress looks very medieval. I do
- 28:16Speaker 2: not think the first one does. I think it's too elaborate. Okay.
- 28:21Speaker 1: I'm looking at women's fashion in the 11th century.
- 28:23Speaker 2: I mean, we could be totally wrong because I was
- 28:27Speaker 2: not around at that time.
- 28:28Speaker 1: A hundred percent. I'm looking at pictures right now. That's
- 28:30Speaker 1: exactly what they did.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Like mid.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Yeah. Yep.
- 28:35Speaker 2: Yeah. I also like looking at it, cannot imagine like
- 28:39Speaker 2: the scene and Deathly Hallows part two with her wearing
- 28:41Speaker 2: like this dress, this first dress. Like it's just not. Yeah, no.
- 28:47Speaker 1: I think it is interesting, too, because obviously they didn't
- 28:52Speaker 1: know who the gray lady was when they filmed the
- 28:54Speaker 1: first two. The first actress did look a bit older.
- 29:01Speaker 2: As well?
- 29:02Speaker 1: Yes. And I think once they knew the story, they, one,
- 29:06Speaker 1: corrected the fashion, and two, they cast someone who looked
- 29:10Speaker 1: like she could believably be about the age Helena would
- 29:14Speaker 1: have been when she was murdered.
- 29:17Speaker 2: I genuinely can't even pull up in my memory the
- 29:21Speaker 2: Grey Lady in the first two films.
- 29:24Speaker 1: We don't get a ton of shots of her, and
- 29:26Speaker 1: that's a big reason why.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, I do remember that, flying over the... Yeah.
- 29:38Speaker 1: And then we get, like, a shot of her and Nick.
- 29:40Speaker 1: walking when he's talking about Harry being on the Quidditch team.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that was a good change, I think,
- 29:50Speaker 2: both costuming and actress-wise.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Yeah, it makes sense. So you had mentioned earlier... the
- 29:59Speaker 1: big difference between the Grey Lady in the first film
- 30:04Speaker 1: and then in the eighth film, just visually and from
- 30:08Speaker 1: a stylistic point. So in the first film, I was
- 30:16Speaker 1: trying to think of the best ways to describe this.
- 30:18Speaker 1: And the only way I can think to describe it
- 30:20Speaker 1: is in the first film, she moves very human-like. Except for, like,
- 30:25Speaker 1: floating a few inches above the ground and gliding instead
- 30:28Speaker 1: of walking. But, like, everything else about her is very just, like,
- 30:31Speaker 1: one-to-one human. In the final film, we get some more, like,
- 30:37Speaker 1: spectral elements where she kind of, like, turns into this
- 30:41Speaker 1: stream of light when she's, like, moving away from Harry.
- 30:44Speaker 1: And he's kind of, like, trying to stop her from, like,
- 30:46Speaker 1: running away. So... It's almost like we go from these
- 30:54Speaker 1: ghosts where stylistically they're just a person who can, like,
- 30:59Speaker 1: move through walls to then we get to this portrayal
- 31:02Speaker 1: of them as being able to basically come and go
- 31:09Speaker 1: through light. And, like, they aren't always solid. Not solid, but, like,
- 31:16Speaker 1: you know.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Right. Like, they're not a physical form, really. It fits
- 31:19Speaker 2: more the, like... ghosts in pop, like general, I don't
- 31:26Speaker 2: want to say popular culture, like in general culture. Um,
- 31:31Speaker 2: I think she also like, there's also a little bit of,
- 31:36Speaker 2: not that like that scene with her and Deathly Hallows
- 31:38Speaker 2: part two is scary, but it has more elements of.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Like horror movie ghosts. Yeah. Yes. Like, you have the
- 31:49Speaker 1: moment where she, like, zooms at the camera and is, like, and, like,
- 31:52Speaker 1: the face looks kind of, like, uncanny.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Disproportionate.
- 31:55Speaker 1: Yes. And, like, the eyes go super dark. Yes.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Yeah. And I like all of that a lot more
- 32:02Speaker 2: than what they did in the first couple films because
- 32:06Speaker 2: at the end of the day, like, right, no, it's
- 32:07Speaker 2: not a horror movie. We're not trying to depict her
- 32:09Speaker 2: as horror. Like, I don't think of her as a
- 32:11Speaker 2: scary ghost. But she's also not.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Well, we've talked about it a lot. We've talked about
- 32:19Speaker 2: the tragedy of her. So she isn't going to be all,
- 32:24Speaker 2: I don't know, happy ghost either. And it also just
- 32:28Speaker 2: makes her feel more like a ghost. Like, you know,
- 32:33Speaker 2: I don't know. She just seems more like a ghost
- 32:37Speaker 2: than they do in the earlier films.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree. So, you know, unfortunately tied together in
- 32:45Speaker 1: life and death, Next up is the Bloody Baron. So
- 32:51Speaker 1: in the films, the Bloody Baron is portrayed by Terrence Baylor.
- 32:57Speaker 1: And weirdly, a very strange choice that they made when
- 33:02Speaker 1: putting this ghost in the Sorcerer's Stone movie is the
- 33:04Speaker 1: Baron seems like very jolly. Yeah. When you see him
- 33:08Speaker 1: in the film, which is odd because even in the
- 33:12Speaker 1: first books, he was always depicted as like kind of
- 33:16Speaker 1: scary and like wearing these chains and like bloody and
- 33:20Speaker 1: like people were scared of him peeves was scared of
- 33:24Speaker 1: the bloody baron so it's kind of strange that we
- 33:28Speaker 1: see him like floating above the table and like laughing
- 33:32Speaker 1: and like being all jokey jokey with his sword.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Like and i do think that Or at least I'm
- 33:40Speaker 2: also kind of hoping that this is a characterization that
- 33:43Speaker 2: they change for the TV show. And I wonder if
- 33:47Speaker 2: maybe they made that choice because it's like... It is
- 33:51Speaker 2: a kid's film. Like we were just saying, right? This
- 33:54Speaker 2: isn't meant to be a horror film. Right. And so...
- 34:00Speaker 2: I could see making that stylistic choice to just be
- 34:03Speaker 2: a little bit less scary to kids where I feel
- 34:07Speaker 2: like now with the tone we're taking with the show
- 34:10Speaker 2: and we're like, okay, like, yes, kids are going to
- 34:12Speaker 2: be watching this, but kids are also exposed to a
- 34:14Speaker 2: lot more now than they were back then. And also,
- 34:17Speaker 2: a lot of the people that are really targeted into
- 34:19Speaker 2: watching this, we're all, we're grown up now. So I
- 34:22Speaker 2: think they can be like.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Right. I was a little kid.
- 34:25Speaker 1: At that point who would have been scared.
- 34:27Speaker 2: And now I'm the adult who wouldn't be scared by
- 34:29Speaker 2: that and actually wants to see it the way that
- 34:31Speaker 2: he's described. Um, so I do think that I could
- 34:34Speaker 2: see them changing his characterization.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Plus, you know, as we've said, we do have the
- 34:40Speaker 1: benefit of having the full picture now. Um, so the
- 34:45Speaker 1: people making the show can understand, um, why he was
- 34:48Speaker 1: written the way he was in the book, whereas Chris
- 34:52Speaker 1: Columbus back in 2000, he was kind of like, oh, well,
- 34:59Speaker 1: if I'm going to have Nick being kind of comedic relief,
- 35:04Speaker 1: why wouldn't I also have the Bloody Baron being funny too?
- 35:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Yeah. You really wonder, do they look back at some
- 35:16Speaker 1: of the choices they made now that they know the
- 35:19Speaker 1: ending of this series and be like, Hmm.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sure. I'm sure. Because let's think to the
- 35:25Speaker 2: benefit that the TV show has from the beginning that
- 35:29Speaker 2: the movies didn't have. Right. We've got the completed series.
- 35:32Speaker 2: We have all of this like companion material that's come out,
- 35:36Speaker 2: all these backstories, all this additional stuff that can inform
- 35:39Speaker 2: every decision that you make that the films just kind
- 35:42Speaker 2: of were, didn't have that.
- 35:43Speaker 1: I am so excited. I'm so excited. For when we
- 35:48Speaker 1: get to the later seasons and the potential to actually
- 35:54Speaker 1: see the Helena Bloody Baron backstory.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Oh, because you know they're, I mean, I don't know.
- 36:01Speaker 1: You have to have that. Like, oh, that would be
- 36:04Speaker 1: so chills.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Yes, and I could totally see, like, if it's still, like,
- 36:08Speaker 2: HBO and everything at that time, them absolutely wanting to
- 36:12Speaker 2: put that in. Like, it's right in their wheelhouse. And I, like... Yeah,
- 36:17Speaker 2: it is really traumatic. And it is.
- 36:20Speaker 2: But yeah, I wanted to see it, too.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:23Speaker 2: I just.
- 36:24Speaker 1: I want to know more about them as characters. Because
- 36:28Speaker 1: it's just.
- 36:30Speaker 2: And as humans.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Yeah. This is also why we need the Founders TV show, though.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Because we could get such a good build-up to this
- 36:40Speaker 1: to realize... why it got to this point how it
- 36:44Speaker 1: got to this point yeah anyway though um so again
- 36:55Speaker 1: the baron's costuming choices are very interesting as well and
- 36:59Speaker 1: there is a story there so apparently his costume is
- 37:03Speaker 1: modeled after 17th century clothing um which again, we know
- 37:10Speaker 1: he died in the 11th century along with Helena. So
- 37:14Speaker 1: when the Sorcerer's Stone film was made, the filmmakers did
- 37:18Speaker 1: not know his death date and they are on record saying, oops,
- 37:25Speaker 1: and later kind of finding that out. So I would
- 37:27Speaker 1: imagine if we got the Bloody Baron in the eighth
- 37:31Speaker 1: film as well, his costume would be totally different than
- 37:35Speaker 1: what it is. Um, But he's got this like very
- 37:41Speaker 1: foppish overcoat going on with like the lacy sleeves and
- 37:46Speaker 1: the little like lace. What do they call that? Like
- 37:48Speaker 1: a cravat or whatever it is. Yeah. That goes down
- 37:51Speaker 1: the front. He does have the bloodstains on his costume
- 37:56Speaker 1: as well. Yes.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Yes.
- 38:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know. It just, the costume looks too
- 38:06Speaker 2: much like I'm the King of England.
- 38:08Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 38:09Speaker 2: Yes.
- 38:10Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Um, something I was reading too also said, you know, the,
- 38:16Speaker 1: the inspiration is interesting because it almost looks very much like, um, hook.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Oh my God.
- 38:25Speaker 1: When you think about the wig that he was wearing too. Yes.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Yes. Yes. I see it, absolutely.
- 38:32Speaker 1: And Maggie Smith is in both of those films, just saying.
- 38:38Speaker 1: So then we also have the Fat Friar, who is
- 38:42Speaker 1: portrayed by Simon Fisher Becker. And the Fat Friar only
- 38:46Speaker 1: appears in the Sorcerer's Stone, never to be seen again.
- 38:49Speaker 1: He just vanishes off the face of the earth. As,
- 38:53Speaker 1: you know, Hufflepuff just historically gets the shaft.
- 38:58Speaker 2: It's fine.
- 38:59Speaker 1: I'm fine. Everything's fine. There's really nothing to talk about
- 39:05Speaker 1: with the fat fryer. Like, we talked about his actual
- 39:08Speaker 1: ghost backstory in our other episode last year. There's really
- 39:14Speaker 1: not much about him when it comes to filming. We
- 39:16Speaker 1: see him for two seconds and then he's gone. But
- 39:21Speaker 1: I felt like I had to include him because, like,
- 39:24Speaker 1: you know, poor guy. His costume also is very... very simple.
- 39:31Speaker 1: It's a gray monk outfit. Not much to it, really.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Just like his story in the films, not much to it.
- 39:44Speaker 1: Yeah, unfortunately. Yeah.
- 39:47Speaker 2: But I will say, though, given that the costuming does
- 39:50Speaker 2: really fit with, like, a friar costume, it just is gray. Like,
- 39:59Speaker 2: you've talked about was the color palette that they went
- 40:04Speaker 2: for all of them, and it's a little bit more
- 40:09Speaker 2: loosey and, like, what's the word I'm looking for? Drapey. Tapped. Yeah.
- 40:16Speaker 2: And like tattered and stuff like that, which I think
- 40:19Speaker 2: fits really well for like when you've got movement of
- 40:21Speaker 2: a ghost. I think if they used an actual just
- 40:24Speaker 2: friar outfit, which is pretty, looks like it's, you know,
- 40:28Speaker 2: right fresh off the press and very like, you know, rigid,
- 40:33Speaker 2: I think wouldn't work as well in the flowy dynamic
- 40:37Speaker 2: of a moving ghost. So yeah, it works.
- 40:41Speaker 1: And with his portrayal in general, like this is one
- 40:44Speaker 1: that I do think they went the right route with
- 40:46Speaker 1: because the fat friar in the books is always kind
- 40:49Speaker 1: of this very like warm jovial kind of figure um
- 40:55Speaker 1: so seeing his two seconds of you know making his
- 40:58Speaker 1: goofy face with this little ghost goblet um it makes
- 41:02Speaker 1: sense that's his character yeah um so then lastly of
- 41:10Speaker 1: course we have moaning myrtle because we can't talk about
- 41:12Speaker 1: ghosts without moaning myrtle So, Shirley Henderson, who portrays Myrtle
- 41:19Speaker 1: in the films, was 37 years old when she got
- 41:22Speaker 1: the role. Which, in a lot of interviews, she's talked
- 41:27Speaker 1: about this and she's like, you know, I thought it
- 41:29Speaker 1: was really weird that I got a call back because...
- 41:31Speaker 1: This character was supposed to be like 14. But the
- 41:35Speaker 1: casting director decided it really didn't matter because she was
- 41:39Speaker 1: a ghost. So no one was going to notice her
- 41:42Speaker 1: age once they got her looking all transparent and ghostly
- 41:45Speaker 1: and such.
- 41:46Speaker 2: I think the casting director was correct.
- 41:49Speaker 1: I think so too. She fooled us all for a
- 41:51Speaker 1: long time. So just like Nearly Headless Nick, Myrtle's takes
- 41:58Speaker 1: were filmed in a green room. Her costume is actually
- 42:02Speaker 1: really interesting because you can see some like shiny metallic
- 42:05Speaker 1: fabric was used underneath the Hogwarts robe, which I'm sure
- 42:10Speaker 1: really helped in adding that ghostly shimmer. So not all
- 42:13Speaker 1: of that was like digital effects. Some of that was
- 42:19Speaker 1: actually built into the costume itself.
- 42:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it kind of looks like, too, they also just
- 42:24Speaker 2: like took a Hogwarts robe and then just put this
- 42:26Speaker 2: like metallic netting like over it.
- 42:30Speaker 1: Right, so it mutes the Hogwarts crest already. Yeah, very interesting. Yeah,
- 42:38Speaker 1: Myrtle is one that's definitely interesting in the films as well,
- 42:43Speaker 1: because she does have a few scenes. I mean, obviously
- 42:46Speaker 1: Chamber of Secrets, she's a big part, but also Goblet
- 42:50Speaker 1: of Fire with the Prefect's bathroom as well. And I
- 42:56Speaker 1: was able to find a few behind-the-scenes scenes things of
- 43:00Speaker 1: the prefect's bathroom scene um because not only did they
- 43:04Speaker 1: film her in her own room but then they had
- 43:08Speaker 1: the stained glass windows that they had to later add
- 43:11Speaker 1: in the moving mermaid so they had a lot going
- 43:14Speaker 1: on just in that scene that's such a short blip
- 43:18Speaker 1: in that movie a lot.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Of special effects in that yeah couple minutes of a
- 43:23Speaker 2: scene yeah for sure.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's kind of my overview on the ghosts
- 43:33Speaker 1: and behind the scenes and how they're portrayed in the films.
- 43:36Speaker 1: It'd be really interesting to revisit this maybe next October.
- 43:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:42Speaker 1: If the TV series gives us some more to talk about. Yeah.
- 43:50Speaker 2: It's about to leave.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Grab on to the portkey.
- 43:59Speaker 2: Okay.
- 43:59Speaker 1: So for our portkey segments, I wanted to take a
- 44:03Speaker 1: little trip over to London. Um, because a lot of
- 44:08Speaker 1: the pictures of the ghost costumes that I found for
- 44:11Speaker 1: the main discussion were from the displays at the studio
- 44:14Speaker 1: tour in London, which really got me wanting to highlight
- 44:17Speaker 1: the studio tour and their Halloween season, all that they
- 44:20Speaker 1: do around this time of year. Um, So now through
- 44:26Speaker 1: November 8th, the studio tour is running what they call
- 44:29Speaker 1: their dark arts season or tour, which is basically just
- 44:32Speaker 1: spooky season. This time of the year, you can see
- 44:36Speaker 1: the Great Hall filled with more than 100 floating pumpkins,
- 44:40Speaker 1: just like in the Sorcerer's Stone film. The tables are
- 44:43Speaker 1: all set as they were for the Halloween feast in
- 44:47Speaker 1: that film as well. And traditionally, during this season, the
- 44:51Speaker 1: Hogwarts ghost costumes are out on display in the Great
- 44:54Speaker 1: Hall as well. So I assume they are there this
- 44:57Speaker 1: year too. I haven't been to the studio tour, but Nicole,
- 45:01Speaker 1: I know you have. Are they out all year or
- 45:04Speaker 1: only during this time?
- 45:07Speaker 2: Sorry, I was distracted because I was looking on my
- 45:09Speaker 2: phone to see if I've been during this time, if
- 45:12Speaker 2: I have pictures from it, because I feel like I
- 45:13Speaker 2: went during a Halloween event, but I can't remember. Yeah.
- 45:19Speaker 2: I feel like they're out all the time.
- 45:26Speaker 1: Are they?
- 45:27Speaker 2: I don't know. It's been a hot minute since I've
- 45:29Speaker 2: been there, like, years.
- 45:31Speaker 1: And they change things all the time, so it's hard
- 45:33Speaker 1: to keep track.
- 45:34Speaker 2: They do, and they, like, change things now even more
- 45:37Speaker 2: than they used to. But, like, it's so crazy because
- 45:39Speaker 2: it's been, like, over a decade since I've been there.
- 45:42Speaker 1: We have to go.
- 45:43Speaker 2: I know. Because I've never been. Sometimes when I think
- 45:45Speaker 2: about how long it's been since I lived in the UK.
- 45:47Speaker 1: It literally makes me have, like, How about this?
- 45:50Speaker 2: It takes my breath away.
- 45:51Speaker 1: We plan ahead and I actually get a passport instead
- 45:54Speaker 1: of our trip to Canada. Our illegal trip to Canada.
- 45:59Speaker 2: It wasn't illegal. Amy had the correct documents. But you
- 46:03Speaker 2: will not get away so easily. No.
- 46:06Speaker 1: I will need a passport to get to London.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know if I went during Halloween because
- 46:12Speaker 2: I went back to, in my phone... The earliest photos
- 46:19Speaker 2: of the studio tour I have are 2015. Again, like
- 46:21Speaker 2: I said, a long time ago.
- 46:24Speaker 1: How is that already more than 10 years ago?
- 46:26Speaker 2: Yeah, let's not talk about it. I have pictures from Christmas. Okay.
- 46:32Speaker 2: The Christmas display. Well, that's really sad if I never
- 46:37Speaker 2: got there for Halloween. But maybe I did because I
- 46:43Speaker 2: did go quite a lot when I lived there.
- 46:45Speaker 1: So next October... We go to London and we do
- 46:48Speaker 1: a live podcast episode from the studio tour.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:53Speaker 1: From the Great Hall. We're just going to set up
- 46:55Speaker 1: right here.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Don't mind us. You're going to have to let us
- 46:57Speaker 2: stay here for a couple hours and not funnel us out.
- 47:02Speaker 2: But I feel like I remember the, maybe I didn't go.
- 47:04Speaker 2: Maybe I'm remembering going into the Great Hall when they
- 47:07Speaker 2: had it decorated for Christmas. I do remember that.
- 47:10Speaker 1: Which I would love to see.
- 47:11Speaker 2: Yes. Yes. And it's definitely worth, like, I think, like,
- 47:15Speaker 2: if you were, like, I can only get to London
- 47:18Speaker 2: for one of the seasons, I would recommend Christmas because
- 47:22Speaker 2: of that, the Hogwarts in the snow model at the end.
- 47:27Speaker 2: But it's got to be really cool to see all, like,
- 47:29Speaker 2: the pumpkins and stuff. Yeah. And the Great Hall. I
- 47:32Speaker 2: feel like I went. I'll have to do some research later.
- 47:37Speaker 2: It is going to bug me. I'm going to have
- 47:38Speaker 2: to do some research and look back on pictures because
- 47:40Speaker 2: I can't believe that I wouldn't have... gone during halloween.
- 47:44Speaker 1: Yeah well regardless um the ghost costume should.
- 47:52Speaker 2: Be there is what i'm getting at i guess maybe
- 47:56Speaker 2: they aren't out all the time because looking at the
- 47:58Speaker 2: pictures you had in the doc i don't remember being
- 48:01Speaker 2: like oh i remember seeing this in person but also
- 48:06Speaker 2: memory from 10 15 years right it's pretty spotty so.
- 48:11Speaker 1: Um um So, this year, during this time period, there
- 48:17Speaker 1: will be roaming Death Eaters and Dementors throughout the sets
- 48:21Speaker 1: at the tour as well.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Wait, how are they going to do roaming Dementors? Are
- 48:26Speaker 2: people just going to be dressed up in Dementor cop and, like,
- 48:28Speaker 2: walking around?
- 48:30Speaker 1: I think it happens in the Forbidden Forest section, so
- 48:34Speaker 1: maybe they're, like, the puppets and maybe they, like, swoop by.
- 48:36Speaker 1: That makes sense.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Yeah. So.
- 48:40Speaker 1: New this year, the tour will feature the Secrets of
- 48:43Speaker 1: Sound Effects exhibit, which I know we talked about them
- 48:45Speaker 1: adding the sound effects exhibit. But it sounds like specifically
- 48:49Speaker 1: for the spooky season tour, they're doing more behind the
- 48:54Speaker 1: scenes of like the darker atmospheric audio moments and how
- 48:58Speaker 1: they achieved it in the films. So that's cool. In
- 49:02Speaker 1: the Creatures Workshop, guests can learn about how Nagini was
- 49:06Speaker 1: brought to life on screen using both practical effects and CGI.
- 49:10Speaker 1: That sounds really interesting. And it looks like as of
- 49:17Speaker 1: this recording, there's only availability in the first week. of
- 49:20Speaker 1: November for this. But you can book as far out
- 49:25Speaker 1: as next year. So you could plan ahead if you're
- 49:28Speaker 1: going to be in London for next Halloween season.
- 49:32Speaker 2: Very cool. It's the noise. Yeah. So in our last episode,
- 49:41Speaker 2: we asked which potion interests you the most and why.
- 49:45Speaker 2: And Jerry shared with us that the potion that she
- 49:48Speaker 2: finds the most interesting and would most want to have
- 49:51Speaker 2: a small vial in her stock is Liquid Luck, otherwise
- 49:54Speaker 2: known as Felix Felicis. Jerry said, I'm interested in how
- 49:57Speaker 2: it works and how it is made and how the
- 49:59Speaker 2: Ministry of Magic or another body manages to keep folks
- 50:02Speaker 2: from using it in sporting events, exams, etc. Jerry also said,
- 50:06Speaker 2: I wonder if it can control the weather. And I
- 50:10Speaker 2: want to have a bottle for myself. I remember that
- 50:13Speaker 2: we were told one should never take it too often.
- 50:15Speaker 2: And I suppose giving it to my husband just before
- 50:17Speaker 2: surgery or some such probably won't work. But just a
- 50:21Speaker 2: swig when getting ready to take early park admission to
- 50:24Speaker 2: be sure that Hagrid's ride doesn't go down. And then
- 50:26Speaker 2: I managed to wave my way through the crowds to
- 50:29Speaker 2: the front of the line. Or should I save it
- 50:31Speaker 2: for early park admission at Epic? Or would it be
- 50:33Speaker 2: most useful to take a swig before a flight to
- 50:35Speaker 2: have that go smoothly? But I loved the way that
- 50:38Speaker 2: Harry was able to use a portion of his supply
- 50:40Speaker 2: to get the memory from Slughorn and then let his
- 50:42Speaker 2: friends share the rest to help ensure their safety during
- 50:45Speaker 2: the battle at the end of the Half-Blood Prince.
- 50:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Which I can't believe we didn't talk about Felix
- 50:52Speaker 1: Felicis when you were even wearing this shirt. Yep.
- 50:55Speaker 2: I came prepared and we didn't even talk about it.
- 50:58Speaker 2: We failed.
- 50:59Speaker 1: But yeah, that is really interesting. And that whole like
- 51:03Speaker 1: him being able to share the potion and Kind of
- 51:06Speaker 1: makes you wonder, like, how much do you have to
- 51:08Speaker 1: take for it to be effective? And, like, does how
- 51:15Speaker 1: well everything goes, is that based on how much you
- 51:19Speaker 1: took of the potion? Like, if you take the whole bottle, is, like,
- 51:23Speaker 1: everything perfect? If you take, like, a little bit, like,
- 51:25Speaker 1: it's the bare minimum of, like, you've got a little
- 51:27Speaker 1: bit of tiny little bit of luck.
- 51:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's that. And I think it's like the,
- 51:32Speaker 2: like we were talking about before, like the duration of
- 51:35Speaker 2: the effect. I could see that really being like the
- 51:38Speaker 2: more you take up Felix Felicis, the longer that would last.
- 51:42Speaker 1: That's true.
- 51:43Speaker 2: If you were taking it before like a Quidditch match,
- 51:45Speaker 2: you're going to want to take enough to like actually
- 51:47Speaker 2: last the whole Quidditch match.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Because Slughorn says something about like one perfect day. So
- 51:53Speaker 1: that could be the whole bottle if you needed one
- 51:55Speaker 1: perfect day.
- 51:57Speaker 2: Right.
- 51:57Speaker 1: But Harry only needed like an hour or so to
- 51:59Speaker 1: get the memory.
- 52:00Speaker 2: Yeah. Right. But it's all try and error because obviously
- 52:05Speaker 2: Harry didn't know how much of that potion he actually
- 52:07Speaker 2: needed to ingest to like. Right. Get to that point. But.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:12Speaker 2: No, I think.
- 52:13Speaker 1: Sheer dumb luck.
- 52:15Speaker 2: I thought of Felix Fleece's when we were talking about
- 52:17Speaker 2: like our favorite potions, but I also thought it was
- 52:19Speaker 2: just like too obvious of a potion.
- 52:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:22Speaker 2: But. then it would be like everybody's favorite.
- 52:26Speaker 1: And it wasn't. Neither of us brought it up. It wasn't. Nope.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Nope. But we can count on Jerry.
- 52:31Speaker 1: Thank you, Jerry.
- 52:32Speaker 2: Thank you, Jerry.
- 52:35Speaker 1: Okay. So our discussion question for this episode is, what
- 52:39Speaker 1: is your favorite ghostly moment in the Harry Potter films?
- 52:43Speaker 1: We would love to hear from you. So drop us
- 52:45Speaker 1: an email at reveliopodcaststaff at gmail.com. or reach out to
- 52:49Speaker 1: us on social media. You can find us on Facebook

- 53:09Speaker 1: We've got lots of fun extras on there, some different
- 53:12Speaker 1: puzzles and digital downloads, extended conversations. All sorts of cool stuff.
- 53:18Speaker 1: So definitely check that out. We've got one more episode
- 53:24Speaker 1: for this spooky season.
- 53:25Speaker 2: I mean, three is pretty good. The way the month
- 53:30Speaker 2: shaked out.
- 53:32Speaker 1: And then it's festive season.
- 53:34Speaker 2: I heard Mariah Carey in my head.
- 53:40Speaker 1: Yes, I feel like we need to splice that in
- 53:42Speaker 1: in our first festive episode.
- 53:47Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll splice that in and not have me do
- 53:48Speaker 2: it again because that did not work. My voice doesn't
- 53:51Speaker 2: go that high, especially with the little bit of throat
- 53:54Speaker 2: issue I have going on right now.
- 53:56Speaker 1: But yes, we do have one more spooky episode, so
- 53:59Speaker 1: definitely listen to that one because it'll be a fun one.
- 54:04Speaker 2: Yep.
- 54:06Speaker 1: All right, until next time, I'm Amy.
- 54:08Speaker 2: And I'm Nicole. Mischief managed.
