- 0:00SPEAKER_00: So one time I was in the Starlight Parade by and there was an impromptu naked bike ride where about thirty naked dudes and ladies came around the corner and just caught me off guard.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: It was just glow sticks and dong.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: And I mean, it was like you could tell the guy in the front, he was he was using that dong of his to steer his bike like you would a boat.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: He had that thing in the wind and just it was a rudder.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: He was the utter rudder right there.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: And yeah, it felt weird, but because I'm from Portland, it wasn't like, my God! It was just like, oh, here it comes.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Almost just like when birds come through your picnic, and you're like, oh, that was intense, and that's it.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's what it felt like.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Welcome into the PNW podcast.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: We are back at it again at the Stafford Hills Club, where you can join the greatest club around, and it's not just me who says it, voted the best health and wellness facility in the Portland area, and it's a community over here.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: They hold doors for you.

- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Um, Marcus, uh, nice to have you on.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Good to see you again.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Um, remember you can check out Marcus's Saturday night at the Cooler in Eugene, right down the street from Odson Stadium, where his band, Limewire Summer, will be playing starting at 9 p.m.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: And you got a chance to win yourself a free tattoo from his wife Ashley, who is an incredible artist.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, her tattoos they get better all the time, and they were great a long time ago.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: So um check out her stuff at Area 51 and also go out and check in with Marcus.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: How you doing today, buddy?
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Um, feeling good, man.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Feeling good.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Uh finally starting to shake off the feeling of the fact that the Ducks lost a game uh over the weekend, and that's always good.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: It normally doesn't come till about Thursday, and I'm glad it got here today because, well, we've got a big game coming up that we need to be ready for.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: So Yeah, I went to go pick up my kid at school the other day, and uh a buddy of mine, I walk up and it's him and another dad, and I give him the fist bumps.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: I'm like, hey guys, how are we?
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: And he goes, Good to see you smiling again.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: And I didn't I didn't piece two and two together.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: I just looked at him, I'm like, have I looked like super depressed lately or something?
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And he's all the ducks.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, oh, okay, okay, that's fine.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: That duck was a pit of depression, but it was short term.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: That's not clinical.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: You know, I've I work with a lot of people from the Midwest and the Eastern Seaboard and the Southeast, and every they're all big football fans out there, as you would imagine.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: I've gotten some random texts from people I haven't talked to in months just asking if I'm okay.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: And you really start to kind of wait a second here.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Am I putting too many eggs in the Oregon football basket?
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: But no.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: The answer is the answer is yes, but you're never gonna listen to that, and either am I.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: So it is what it is.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: The good news, Marcus, uh, we've got a little thing here that's gonna be not talking about the ducks for a few minutes um to shake it off for you.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Now, I won't say it's gonna 100% make you happy just because some of these stories make you roll your eyes a little bit, but it'll definitely pull you out of whatever duck rut you were in.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Uh, we've got some weird news from around the Pacific Northwest, and I'm gonna start off with this one.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: The government in the PNW would like to kill off nearly a half a million owls.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: For what?
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Um, well, the I'm glad you asked because it now it is a 30-year plan.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: They're not just gonna go in and kill a half a million tomorrow, um, but they want to kill 450,000 barrel owls.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: So, or sorry, barred owls, not barrel owls, barred owls to save the spotted owl.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: So we got to kill a half a million of them to save some more of them.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Can we not figure out what's going on with the spotted owl, Drew?
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: This goes back, I don't know if you remember this in this state, but all the way back in the 90s, we were talking about the damn spotted owl in this state.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, uh, I guess you would call them climate protesters or or just animal rights activists at the time, were doing some crazy things like suspending themselves between trees.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: So if you cut one tree down, you're gonna take down the person that's trying to save the spotted owl.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: They were spiking trees back then, Drew, where they would drive a metal rod into the tree so that if you tried to cut it with the chainsaw, it would kick the chainsaw back out, possibly maiming the logger that was trying to do his job.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: And here we are, 30 years later, and we're still worried about the spotted owl.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: And now we're gonna kill half a million other animals to try to save the spotted owl.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Tell me, uh, aside from looking cool, what in the blue hell does the spotted owl provide that means that we need to kill off 450,000 of anything?
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, how is it that the same people, Drew, can fight for the spotted owl and also be okay killing half a million owls?
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: It does not add up to me and never will.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Well, it's the same person who's okay with spiking a tree.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: If you spike a tree, I think that should be assault with a deadly weapon because you know what you're doing.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: You're going to try and hurt a person.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: And I just take it all the way back to a little thing I like to call food chain.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: I don't care how much you like an owl.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: You don't get to hurt a human to save an owl.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, and I know that you're a dog person, but I also just don't believe that in order to save a dog, you run over a human unless they're malicious intent, which, you know, the owl is the owl.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: And I think it's it's a little bit silly here when, you know, we're talking about they went around and analyzed this stuff.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Now, these barred owls, it's not like we put them here.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: They migrated from the East Coast over time and have taken over the population here, which I think there's also an argument, but that that's just a part of the evolution of life, right?
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Like things go extinct.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: The we're no one's crying about the woolly mammoth.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Like, it's part of the process, is even we too will go extinct one day.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: It's just part of it.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Like, it's the circle of life.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Now, they did 2.1 million hours of audio recordings to get an idea of how many of these are around.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: And the barred owls were detected with 891 of them per 1,000 acres.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Quite a few owls.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Spotted owls only make up 261.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: So it's almost three times as many barred owls as spotted owls.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: It almost seems like the ship has already sailed, and now we're going to commit owl genocide in an attempt to right the ship.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: I'm going to draw an interesting parallel for you here, Drew, that just popped up in my mind.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: You know, uh, from prior times on the air with me, that I have very serious thoughts about the reintroduction of the, or excuse me, the introduction of the gray wolf into the state of Oregon.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, a wolf species that was not native here, uh, a wolf species that was used to taking down things like moose and competing with polar bears and grizzly bears for not polar bears, that was mistaken, but grizzly bears for food, okay?
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: Um, we had wolves in Oregon.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we did.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: We had timber wolves in Oregon, a much smaller breed, uh, not quite as devastating to some of the local undulate populations or farm animals.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: And there are people in this state that would lay down in the middle of a railroad track if you said you were even going to kill one of these wolves.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Well, that's a non-native species that we introduced.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: They're here because we put them here and you won't let anybody touch them.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: Now we're talking about a non-native species that has migrated here on its own.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Nature ran its course, and you want to kill half a million of them?
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: How does that logic add up?
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: It doesn't.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: It never will.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: And again, maybe the spotted owl is riding the short bus to owl school.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: We've been working on it for 30 years and it's still in the tank.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: Has anybody asked the spotted owl if maybe it's just done its time and it's ready to check out?
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: Have we thought about that?
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: No, we can't.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: We can't talk to animals.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: We can only listen to see how many of them are there per acre.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: How many millions of dollars went into just listening to see how many owls there were before you decided you're going to spend millions more on killing them all?
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: This is this is the exact this is a great um uh example, Drew, of how our state runs and why I get so pissed off at it when this stuff comes up.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Well, if you want to know, I don't know exactly how much it costs to listen to the owls, but I will tell you how much the program is gonna cost to get rid of nearly a half a million owls, and that is$1.35 billion.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: I said billion.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: To kill.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: So more than than Phil and Penny Knight donated to the hospital to try to uh you know advance women's health to kill half a million owl.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: I have 10 friends with fully loaded 12 gauges that would go out and do it for a buck 309 a day.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: All you gotta do is ask them, okay?
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Um this is ridiculous.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: And another example, yet again, of how we just blow money in this state.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: Because here's what I want to know.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: How about you spend a quarter of the 1.1 billion on a really good environmental study and tell me where we're gonna be in 30 years?
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Because if you kill half a million barred owls and 30 years down the road, you go, well, now there's only 150 spotted owls per acre.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: It's because they want to die.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: They're actively trying to die, and you're not letting them die.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Let nature run its course if that's what has to happen.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: You already said it.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: We all go extinct.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: I miss the dodo more than certain dead relatives, Drew, but there's nothing I can do about it.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: And I will say that uh keep your eye out down in Eugene, because Portland and Eugene have a new campaign uh which is trying to stop this from happening called Hoot Don't Shoot.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: I like the name.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: You gotta have something there.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: You gotta have a catchy name, man.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: You got to.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: If you're gonna win these uh these deep political battles in a blue state, you gotta have a catchy name to start with.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: You gotta.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: If it doesn't rhyme, then what are we really doing?
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Uh so we'll keep an eye on the owls.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: We'll see how much money we can spend and how many we can shoot straight out of the air in an attempt to save just a couple of spotted ones.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Um, Marcus, I hope you're coming to town September 19th because it's right around the corner.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Weirdfest is coming to Portland at Oaks Park.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Perhaps not a better place that they could have put it on the face of the earth.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: Weirdfest belongs in Portland, Drew.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: It really does.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: 60 plus vendors, live music, weird characters.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Um, there's gonna be a beer garden, which you're gonna need because it's gonna get weird.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Um, they've got an interpretive dance competition, they've got a chicken beauty contest, and even Marcus, a kid's rave.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: We're gonna load these kids up on their Adderall that they've been prescribed and let them dance the night away to Veggie Tales.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Um there's some things here, Drew.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: How do you judge an interpretive dance competition?
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: Now, I want you guys to really think words matter, right?
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: They have an interpretive, meaning open to my interpretation, dance competition.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: We're gonna have 20 winners, and there's nothing you can do about it because it's gonna be whoever each judge picks, and they're never gonna be able to come to a decision, right?
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, the whole thing seems impossible to judge.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: And here's here's the other thing is a chicken beauty contest, they all look exactly the same.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Like they how much prettier?
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: My brother has chickens.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: The only ones that look different is a rooster.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: And it's not a chicken.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's a couple different colors, but they're still it's not like, oh my god, gorgeous chicken.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Has anyone ever said that when they're not having fried chicken week?
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: No, and bold move to put the chicken beauty contest at the end of fried chicken week.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: No doubt one of those chickens that was fried chicken week chicken probably could have won the beauty contest based on the criteria.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: But of course, we had to get hungry.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: That's what happened, Marcus.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: All right, so I'm gonna rapid fire you, weird or not, on a couple of things in Portland.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Uh, because what weird used to be is counterculture, weird art, bikes, food carts, random things like that, right?
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Now, now, even though like uh there's a lot of weird where I'll see somebody like snake charming downtown.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Like, first of all, where do you keep that snake?
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: You don't have a home, and it's just weird to me that you're allowed to like roam around with with a reptile like that, but I don't get who am I to say?
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and a pan flute.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: You got a reptile and a pan flute.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: You don't have any cages, but you got a wicker basket and a pan flute.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Thank God you're the guy with the cobra.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and no wonder we get goats on the bus because there's no regulation to any of this stuff.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: Now, all right, weird or not, naked bike ride.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's look, it's more mainstream than it ever used to be, but it's still so weird to me given how you sit on a bike and thinking about the things and where they go and the chafing.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: They don't make enough baby powder to make this anything other than weird to me, Drew.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: So one time I was in um the Starlight Parade, and so I had to walk all the way back through downtown to go get back to my car.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: And my kids and wife had come to it, and so I had to walk back to where they were at the they were at the parade, I was in it.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: And so I'm walking by, and there was an impromptu naked bike ride where about 30 naked dudes and ladies came around the corner and just caught me off guard.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: It was just glow sticks and dong.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: And I mean, it was like you could tell the guy in the front, he was he was using that dong of his to steer his bike like you would a boat.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: He had that thing in the wind and just it was a rudder, it was the utter rudder right there.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: And yeah, it felt weird, but because I'm from Portland, it wasn't like, oh my god, it was just like, oh, here it comes.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Almost just like when birds come through your picnic, and you're like, Oh, that was intense, and that's it.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's what it felt like.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: You know, I'll never get the idea behind it, Drew.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: One time when I was a kid, I slid my red line into a little bit of a gravel pit, and I was picking rocks out of my knee for like the the last half of the day.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: And I remember every time we went to go like BMX riding after that, it was jeans because why you dress for the slide, not the ride.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: How many naked skin graphs like of the butt have people had to do after naked or after naked bike rides?
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: It's it's there's gotta be a statistic out there somewhere.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: And I listen, guys, wear your helmets, of course, but maybe throw on some underwear too.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I think some of those bikes come with a taint guard.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, god Marcus, is it weird or not?
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Chicken beauty pageant.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: I I chimed in.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: What do you think?
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, very weird and and almost a little bit scary weird because you have to have somebody that comes up with the idea, let's have a chicken beauty pageant.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: And maybe that's just a whimsical grandma, Drew.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: But then you have to have people that look at the chicken and go, oh, this is a gorgeous chicken.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: And that's the guy I'm worried about.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: That's the weird right there.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: How about the$7 artisanal pickle?
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: I don't know, man.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Weird, I'm more obnoxious than weird, I guess.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: It's definitely look, I'll call it weird that you thought somebody would pay$7 for a pickle because it ain't happening for me.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Like the only way I'm paying$7 for a pickle is if I'm getting one of those hot mamas and giving it to somebody else.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: You brought up hot mamas a couple uh shows ago.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: I'd pay seven bucks to watch somebody else eat that, but that's the only way you're getting it for me.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Now you're waiting to throw a hot mama at a beaver fan.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: I can see it happening.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: All right, here's a good one for you.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: Dog breweries.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: I think that's really cool.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: And you know me as a dog person, like we've only taken the Corgis out to a couple of these, um, but it's really cool because it uh I think it gives another social aspect to it.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: Dog people are very friendly and they want to meet your dog and more than they want to meet you.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: And so if you're a person that doesn't really like the social part of a really packed bar, but you really love dogs, you kind of get both of your things there.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: You get your your bar with all the drinks that you want.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's some stuff going on, but I might meet a German shepherd that just steals my heart, Drew.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: And that's that's totally normal for me.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: I don't know why, but I prefer a dog in a brewery than Home Depot.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: It's like I'm trying to move lumber and this dog is losing its mind over here.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: You know, and I'm a good dog, is one thing.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: You get to Home Depot and they're like, oh, all dogs in?
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: It means train dogs.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Dogs that like can understand what's going on here, not you dragging it by the leash where it looks like it's gonna be choked to death.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I got a bruise on my shin from a pit bull packing an eight foot two by four down the aisle.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: That was fun.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: Uh, let's let's keep them on a leash in Home Depot, please.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: So I'm with you.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: The dog brewery is cool.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: How about the unicycle bagpipe player, the Unipiper?
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: You know, I always thought it was kind of just dumb until I actually saw it.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: I uh it actually was the weekend of your bachelor party.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: I had a band that was playing a show in Portland, and we were packing our stuff up.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: We played a coffee shop in like the middle of the day, and we're packing our stuff up, and he rode by flames and all, playing his bagpipes.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: And I thought I thought it was dumb until that guy rode in front of the keep Portland weird sign because that's where we were parked, and I was like, this is this is right down the middle, man.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: This is a perfect thing to have at Portland and keep it mysterious too.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't like knowing who he is.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: I want I want that guy to have some whimsy.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: And you sadly, because of my old radio job, I did see the man behind the mask, and he is super cool.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: I really like the guy, and it is weird to other people, but to me, it's kind of a part of Portland now, and so I definitely like it.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: And then after all the drama will where Paul Blart tried to kick him out of the Lloyd Center on the final day.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm I'm team Uni Piper, so I'll go ahead and say not that weird.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: And finally, Marcus, how about that kids' rave at Oaks Park?
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: Again, um, it's not the person that comes up with the idea.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: It would be fun to have the kids have a little dance.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: It's the person that's like, oh, I can't wait to make that a rave.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: Like, I again, like a little bit weird here.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: It's very Portland.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: Let's put it that way.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: If if you're gonna find a kid's rave, nine times out of ten, I think you find it in Portland, Oregon.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, kids hopped up on their Adderall and Red 40.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: Take it right to the cleaners.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna give this give this kid a six-pack of Mountain Dew and let him go dance the night away.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: Can't wait to see what happens.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Nothing could go wrong there.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: This kid's walking around like he rode the scrambler for an hour.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: All right, we're gonna take a break.

- 22:07SPEAKER_00: All right, we are still going through some of the weird news affecting the Pacific Northwest.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: And I don't know if you saw this, Marcus.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: It's a little bit south for you, but there was a Pacific Northwest fireball mystery that's been going on.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: It was sighted across Oregon and Washington on August 30th.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: So it's a little bit ago now, but it's kind of been going through the conversation.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: This thing's been analyzed by NASA, first visible 52 miles above Mount St.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Helens, traveling at 48,000 miles an hour.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Thing went at least 80 miles through the atmosphere before it disintegrated about 33 miles above Astoria, just out over the water there, which didn't allow for anything to hit the ground that we would see.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: But it's wild to me that this thing was only two feet wide.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: So it's a heavy, like dense chunk of something, but something that's only two feet causes that big of a fireball to burn for that long.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: I just the first thing I do is I fear that when a bigger dog shows up, what in the hell is gonna happen?
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, if if a two-foot chunk can be a thousand pounds, what's a Honda Civic size chunk weigh, Drew?
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: And how fast does it have to be going to blow our planet in half, for God's sakes?
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: And what'd you say, 50 some miles above Mount St.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Helens?
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: That ain't far enough above Mount St.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: Helens for me to be okay with it.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: Like if you would have said 500 miles, I would have been like, oh, certainly.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: But 50 miles seems like that's just like right there.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, from here, that's like Salem and Change.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: If I can drive there in an hour, I don't like how close this thing is to us.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: And it makes me wonder how often stuff flies into our atmosphere and we just don't see it.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: Oh, all the time.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: And and like the the space junk, I think about that too, like all the stuff floating around just above the atmosphere that has been kicked off of spaceships or whatever.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: How much of that stuff comes flying back in and burns up before we ever notice it?
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: Um, and how many people, Drew, looked up at this one and thought, finally, it's all over.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: Uh good night, sweet prince.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: I I I know there was a few.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: I don't know any of them personally, but I'm sure there was a few of them that thought, all right, we can finally open a bottle of expensive whiskey and call this one a go, if you will.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm glad I maxed out my visa.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: Done and done, buddy.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: Now, I also there's also the thought that, you know, like how quick are we just to chew on whatever answer they give us?
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like, oh my God, massive fireball in the sky.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: Was that an alien?
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: What was it?
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: Was that a missile?
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: Oh, did Russia shoot something at us?
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: Nah, dog.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: No, no.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: It's a two-foot size rock.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: Uh, forget about it.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: How do I know that isn't that Tesla that Elon threw up there and finally sucked back into our atmosphere and burned up?
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: How do I know this isn't a Chinese weather balloon trying to take pictures of my butt when I'm sleeping?
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: I don't, but I'll buy it if you tell me it's not.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: And there's part of me that's like, I like to sleep at night.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: I don't want you to be like, okay, well, there was something, it was super shady.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: We're all frightened.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, everybody at the Pentagon's freaking out.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: We don't know a damn thing about it.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: Good night.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: Like that would not help either.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Don't cause another sorry.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: I was just gonna say, we're just likely to eat up whatever they give us.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: And well, don't cause another run on the toilet paper.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's what we're really trying to stay away from here.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: If I can't go and comfortably buy a pallet of toilet paper and when bottled water at the store anymore, that's when I'll start panicking about lizard people, I guess.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: But I don't know.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: This one, I would have loved to see it.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: I bet you it looked really cool.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: Oh, I bet it was great.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: Uh, but as as of now it's burned up somewhere outside Astoria, a little pebble fell and hit the roof of the Goonies house.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: And scene.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: And the guy that owned the Goonies house came out and yelled at it.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: I'm sure.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: Well, I gotta I gotta clear that up a little bit.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: They I actually interviewed the guy who bought that house from the Grumpy family.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: He fixed it up entirely and now does let people come all the way up to the property.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, he's a true Goonies fan, and I really like the guy, so I'm I'm proud that he is the owner now.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: He's actually, I believe, from Kansas City.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: He's a Chiefs fan.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: And when we talked to him, they were winning like every Super Bowl and as an embarrassment of Riches, so I'll never forget that.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: But he's definitely uh a Goonies fan first and has refused uh to act a fool like the old owners.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: So the old owners just has a regular house now that he sits on the front porch and get off my lawns, people.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: I'm sure of it.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and there's far fewer people showing up because they're like, no one cared about you.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: It's the house, dude.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: Do the truffle shuffle and hit the road.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: Settle down, dirty Harry.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: Um, and finally, we got one more here, Marcus.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: Did you hear about the$200,000 Oregon Lego scandal?
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: I did.
- 27:17SPEAKER_01: I I've been uh sort of following this when it was going on and uh kind of crazy, man.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: First of all, crazy that Legos can get to that value uh regardless of the size of collection, but these things are are super expensive and uh a little bit of shadiness going on with this story.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: Well, I would say that Legos are the are to toys as jelly bellies are to candy as Ferraris are to cars.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: There.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: Because that's a good point.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: There is no higher priced jelly belly or Lego in their prospective category.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: Same thing with a luxury vehicle, but Legos, like my kids have always loved Legos, and as a parent and as a grown-up kid, there's nothing more fun than going through the a big booklet and building a massive Lego.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Like you straight up take over whatever project your child's on, and you're like, you need help, elbow.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: Like, I got this.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: And they know it.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: And so a little one is 50 bucks, a medium one's 150 bucks.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: If you want a castle or something, three or four hundred dollars.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: Dude, it's wild.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: And then that price gets extrapolated if they become some sort of collectible like a Star Wars or Avengers, you know, you you name it.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, the less of them that they make and the more people that want them once they are out of production, that price just keeps going up, dude.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: Do you know uh what the racket was, what the plan was?
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: So from what I understand, this was a consignment deal.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: Um, uh, and if I'm not mistaken here, uh the guy that actually owned the collection passed away, and his family wanted to sell it at a store in Kaiser called Bricks and Minifigs, and so they put it there on consignment.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: Uh, about$200,000 worth of Legos uh collected over the years.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: Well, they hadn't heard anything, and from what I understand, they went to the store to see what was going on, or there was some back and forth, and they couldn't get a response from the owner of the store, which by the way is a franchise location, so that's important here too.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Um they went down to the store to see if they could talk to this guy face to face, and the store was closed, and not planning on being reopened and closed along with it, uh, was the$200,000 worth of collectible Legos.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: And so that's where I think that the legal process had to start getting involved.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: Um, I I don't know about you know what contracts were signed or anything like that, but I assume that with the path that the people that were wronged or felt they had been wronged took, um, I would guess that there was some sort of contract signed here because they seem to have the legal foothold over the guy that owns the franchise.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: Well, it's like anything, you know, they've got an a consignment art business down the street from my house, high-end art, but it's all independent artists put their stuff in there on consignment.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: You don't get to shudder and keep my stuff.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: You are you're borrowing it until you sell it, and then you get a commission on the sale.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: Like it's not yours, it's mine.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: You're holding it for me.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: Consignment.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: Like it's not yours.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: And so the second, and I don't know what the contract says, it might say you have to give us X number of weeks to sell the items.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: But if you shutter the store, it should be void and give me my stuff back.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: I need to go somewhere where they can sell it.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: This is$200,000 of my money wrapped up in this.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: And while people are like, Well, it's just a toy, you're a dumbass.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: It's money.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: Lego is gold.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: That's a down payment on a really big house, is what that is.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: Or that's just a house.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: If you don't want to go in the really big category, you could still probably take 200 grand and find yourself a little two-bed, one bath someplace, uh, and and live quite comfortably.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, man, uh, it this isn't a goodwill situation here.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: In goodwill, you donate it to them, they sell it, they keep the cash, everything's good.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: Uh, consignment and donation are not the same thing.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah, I think the last that I'd heard about this, Drew, that the family was actually getting the the Legos back.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Has there been a resolution at this point in time?
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: It doesn't give me the full breakdown here.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: I'm guessing uh that they are in the process if they don't already have it back.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: Because the end of this story just basically says that that they were they're in the middle of this battle.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: Well, it it definitely lawsuits are currently filed, so that leads me to believe that they haven't handed it back.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's kind of what it sounds like.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: Wouldn't that lead you to believe that maybe they sold some and it's not there and you don't have the money?
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, that definitely could happen.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: And and in that case, if you sold it and you took that money and did whatever you did with it, uh, and and they've got a good lawyer, uh, you're gonna owe that money back.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: There's nothing that's gonna save you from that.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: So I hope you didn't sell all 200 grand worth and then go out and buy a Ferrari, uh, because that thing's gonna have to go back to the shop and you're gonna have to take that check and hand it to the people that owned this property.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, man, it's it like I said, a little bit shady, okay?
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: Because if I was going to be an upstanding business person and I wanted to maybe open up another business in this town, the only thing that you can do here when you're gonna shut the doors is call these people and tell them to come get their stuff.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: It kind of seems to me, and this is speculation, but it seems to me like you shut the doors on the store because you now had more merchandise in that store than you ever had and you realize the value of it.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: Why not just keep it and sell it on eBay um and get the profits that way and not have to worry about actually paying the dude for his stuff?
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: So that's why I say it sounds shady.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: I can't prove that yet, but I'll be following along.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: I would be prying their fingers off saying, Lego my stuff.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Um, we gotta get going, but before we do, Marcus has a big show coming up on Saturday at the Cooler in Eugene, right there on MLK Same Street.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: You'll find Odson Stadium.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: Tell us what they can expect Saturday night.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: My band LimeWire Summer playing all your favorite uh pop punk and emo hits from the early, excuse me, late 90s, early 2000s.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: Uh free tattoo giveaway from Area 51.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: Um, probably gonna have a bag full of wristbands that I'll be throwing out for free too.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: We got all sorts of merch.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: Come on down, sing along with us, 9 p.m.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: to midnight this Saturday, September 19th at the coolers, Drew said.
- 33:45SPEAKER_01: Thanks for the plug, man.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: And we will see you down there.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: Go Ducks this weekend or this Friday.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: And then Beaver fans, if you listen to your coach, they're begging you to fill the stands this week.
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: The students don't come back for another week or even two weeks, then they head out on the road.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: They're not going to get that opportunity.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: You want to keep this season going, you want to build on the momentum of last week, get down there and fill the seats.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: Do it for your alma mater, do it for your team, do it for your beeves.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: I want to see both teams succeed in this state.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: Have a great day, Marcus.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: You too, bud.
