Sam: Hello and welcome to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam. Today we're talking about 'On the Shortness of Life' by Seneca. Sophie, did this essay make you feel a little attacked?
• 0:12
Sophie: Hey there Sam. Absolutely. Because Seneca's whole point is that we're the ones wasting our time. He says life isn't short, we just use it badly.
• 0:23
Sam: Right. It starts with this irony, we all complain about how fast life goes, but then we fritter away hours on stuff we don't even care about.
• 0:32
Sophie: Exactly. He says we guard our money but throw away time like it's worthless. And time is the one thing you can't get back.
• 0:40
Sam: Yeah. The part that got me was about being 'preoccupied'. Like, we're so busy with status, money, and pleasure that we never actually live.
• 0:49
Sophie: He's brutal on the guy who's always chasing the next thing. The businessman, the politician, the socialite, they're all anxious, never satisfied.
• 0:59
Sam: They're always preparing to live, but they never actually do. Like, they postpone happiness to some future that never comes.
• 1:07
Sophie: And Seneca says that's the real tragedy. You die without having truly lived. You've just existed.
• 1:15
Sam: So what's the antidote? He talks about 'true leisure'. But he doesn't mean binge-watching Netflix, does he?
• 1:22
Sophie: No, not at all. True leisure is active engagement with important things. Studying philosophy, reflecting on your life, reading the great thinkers.
• 1:32
Sam: He says spending time with Socrates or Epicurus makes your life longer because you're connecting with something eternal.
• 1:40
Sophie: Yeah. And the wise person lives in the present. They don't waste time regretting the past or worrying about the future.
• 1:47
Sam: That's easier said than done. But he's not just giving abstract advice. He says, look at your life, see where your time actually goes.
• 1:55
Sophie: Right. He wants you to be ruthless. Cut out the unnecessary. Say no to things that drain you.
• 2:03
Sam: And he's harsh on pleasure-seeking. He says the pursuit of pleasure is a trap, it just creates more craving.
• 2:10
Sophie: Instead, happiness comes from virtue. Living with integrity, courage, and justice. That's reliable.
• 2:19
Sam: I also liked his take on death. He says we're terrified of it, but that fear makes us live even less.
• 2:26
Sophie: The wise person accepts death. They know it's natural, so they focus on living well right now.
• 2:32
Sam: It's not morbid, it's liberating. Because if you're ready to die at any moment, you stop wasting time.
• 2:39
Sophie: Exactly. The essay is actually optimistic. It says we have the power to change our relationship with time.
• 2:47
Sam: My biggest takeaway is to stop postponing. I keep thinking 'I'll do that when I retire' but there's no guarantee I'll make it.
• 2:55
Sophie: And if you want to go deeper into Seneca or any other book, the whole library is on 7minutebooks.com/app. Over six thousand fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language. It starts at $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 for lifetime access.

Sophie: But the real takeaway is that we have the power to choose how we spend our time. Seneca's message is as urgent now as it was two thousand years ago. We'll see you in the next one.
