- 0:04Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overland Journal podcast. I am
- 0:07Speaker 1: your host, Scott Brady, and I am here with my
- 0:10Speaker 1: co host Matt Scott. Hello, and we are very fortunate
- 0:15Speaker 1: today to have one of the ogs of overlanding in
- 0:20Speaker 1: North America and a close personal friend, Paul May. Thank
- 0:24Speaker 1: you so much for being on the podcast. Man, that's
- 0:27Speaker 1: my pleasure, my honor. Thank you for having me in. Well,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and you were telling Matt and I that you've actually
- 0:32Speaker 1: listened to all of.
- 0:33Speaker 2: The podcasts Kitten Kaboodle, So so.
- 0:37Speaker 1: What are some things that you think we could do
- 0:39Speaker 1: better about the podcast?
- 0:41Speaker 3: I think you guys are spot on. I think you're
- 0:43Speaker 3: doing an awesome.
- 0:43Speaker 4: Job, particularly me. I'm really good right when you're here.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Matt has lots of cool things to do in the podcast.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Is just one of them.
- 0:53Speaker 3: So Lenny on his plate, Yeah, sure, what I really
- 0:57Speaker 3: enjoyed about it, And maybe it's a I don't know,
- 1:01Speaker 3: I don't know how to say it, but it's all
- 1:02Speaker 3: these people that I have met and that are friends
- 1:05Speaker 3: of mine, that you guys have interviewed, and I'm like, yeah,
- 1:08Speaker 3: I know is coming from and you know, I picture
- 1:10Speaker 3: their face sitting right here, and it's been a wonderful experience.
- 1:13Speaker 4: Right now you're sitting right here in this hollowed seat.
- 1:17Speaker 1: And a special thanks to one of this week's sponsors,
- 1:21Speaker 1: Rumpel Blankets. Rumpell started literally in the back of a van.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Their story is interesting. They were on a surf and
- 1:28Speaker 1: ski trip through California and the founders of Rumpel were
- 1:31Speaker 1: sleeping in a van several miles up a dirt road
- 1:34Speaker 1: near a secret hot springs. They woke up the next
- 1:37Speaker 1: morning and sub zero temperatures in a car that wouldn't start.
- 1:40Speaker 1: They were outside of cell reception and confronted with the
- 1:43Speaker 1: real possibility of a long walk into town. So instead
- 1:46Speaker 1: they decided to bundle up in their sleeping bags and
- 1:49Speaker 1: drink whiskey while they waited for someone else to show up.
- 1:52Speaker 1: And that turned into hours, and the conversation extended on
- 1:55Speaker 1: to the subject of bedding and they came up with
- 1:58Speaker 1: Rumpel Blankets.
- 1:59Speaker 3: There.
- 2:00Speaker 1: The most popular product is the original puffy blanket. It
- 2:03Speaker 1: is their flagship product and it's available in a one person,
- 2:06Speaker 1: a two person, and a junior size. I have used
- 2:08Speaker 1: the two person for many years. I keep it as
- 2:12Speaker 1: part of my kit at lives in the vehicle just
- 2:15Speaker 1: in case I run into a situation similar to what
- 2:17Speaker 1: they did where I'm stranded and need some additional warmth
- 2:20Speaker 1: and insulation. It's also really useful for around the campfire
- 2:23Speaker 1: when you want that little bit of extra comfort. I'll
- 2:26Speaker 1: also use it when sleeping in the vehicle, and then
- 2:28Speaker 1: they are just the right size or a roof tent
- 2:31Speaker 1: as well. So these are really high quality blankets that
- 2:34Speaker 1: are weather resistant. They're made from recycled materials, they're washable,
- 2:38Speaker 1: and they have very durable fabrics in construction, which makes
- 2:42Speaker 1: them ideal for overland travel. Check out Rumpel or your
- 2:45Speaker 1: next blanket. You're not on the podcast just because you're
- 2:49Speaker 1: our buddy, but it is because you have lived a
- 2:52Speaker 1: very interesting life, and you have traveled extensively yourself, including
- 2:57Speaker 1: probably a dozen trips by nowadays Africa, if not close
- 3:01Speaker 1: to that. Yeah, and you've traveled a lot also in
- 3:05Speaker 1: North America. You've owned a lot of different land cruisers.
- 3:08Speaker 1: So I'd love to just let this conversation flow through
- 3:13Speaker 1: some of where you've come from and then those little
- 3:17Speaker 1: nuggets of those gems of experience that you've had along
- 3:21Speaker 1: the way with your journeys. So maybe maybe just give
- 3:24Speaker 1: us the where did Paul come from?
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 3:26Speaker 4: Who is Paul?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Who is Paul?
- 3:28Speaker 3: It's been a wonderful life. I'm very fortunate. My parents
- 3:32Speaker 3: were all for travel, and I grew up in traveling
- 3:36Speaker 3: in travel trailers of all. Yeah, we had an Aristocat
- 3:39Speaker 3: it was a single axle, ran around in that in
- 3:42Speaker 3: the early seventies. In the mid to late seventies we
- 3:45Speaker 3: had a double axle prowler and we went all over
- 3:47Speaker 3: the place in that. And I also was involved in
- 3:49Speaker 3: a lot of early activities with the Scouts and we
- 3:52Speaker 3: got out a bunch in there. So seventy five, my
- 3:55Speaker 3: parents took me on a month long around the country tour.
- 3:58Speaker 3: We left and I was in the back seat of
- 4:01Speaker 3: the Ford Country.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Squire and we went from a country squire. That's awesome.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Yeah, And it was a bad country square. I mean
- 4:07Speaker 3: it was mean. And my dad had fly by all
- 4:11Speaker 3: the guys in the pickups of their trailers and he
- 4:13Speaker 3: just hauling it past the guys and he just wave
- 4:15Speaker 3: and sand. Yeah, it was a pretty impressive car. But
- 4:18Speaker 3: we did a trip from Salt Lake to Albuquerque to
- 4:22Speaker 3: Texas to Florida, to New York City to Chicago and yeah,
- 4:26Speaker 3: I mean all around the country and it just opens
- 4:28Speaker 3: your eyes to there's a different world, right, especially at
- 4:30Speaker 3: ten years old. When I was in that that early
- 4:32Speaker 3: time frame, I also started getting into the outdoors. Scouting
- 4:37Speaker 3: was a big thing, and so all my friends were
- 4:39Speaker 3: getting their trains and their hot wheels and the things.
- 4:42Speaker 3: And for Christmas, I'm getting a Kirkham's backpacking tent and
- 4:46Speaker 3: a down sleeping bag and you know, the hard frame
- 4:50Speaker 3: backpack and all this stuff to go camping and getting out.
- 4:53Speaker 3: When I was twelve, we did a sixty mile backpacking
- 4:56Speaker 3: trip for eight days and hiked from Utah through King's
- 4:59Speaker 3: p and out from Wyoming to king Speaking out into
- 5:03Speaker 3: Utah and that hooked me on that on the outdoors
- 5:06Speaker 3: part of that. So from there, man, anytime that I
- 5:08Speaker 3: could get away, I mean I drove. When I was sixteen,
- 5:11Speaker 3: I took off in the car I had at that
- 5:14Speaker 3: time and slept in the front seat of the car
- 5:18Speaker 3: in Newport Beach.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Sweet Sweet ran at sixteen. That's that's legit.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah, you ran off and did that.
- 5:25Speaker 4: That's something that you can only do at sixteen.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Yeah, Well at twenty two as well, I slept in
- 5:31Speaker 3: the front seat of my two thousand and two TII
- 5:33Speaker 3: and saw Salida for a couple of days and so
- 5:35Speaker 3: we were, yeah, doing that stuff.
- 5:37Speaker 2: I bet you wish you still had that car.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Yeah, like those two thousand and twos have just gone
- 5:42Speaker 1: through the roof in the last five years.
- 5:44Speaker 3: I used to used to drag race muscle cars on
- 5:46Speaker 3: State Street and it's all like back in the day.
- 5:51Speaker 3: It was a lot of fun and so you know,
- 5:53Speaker 3: a lot of wanderlust sure involved in that. And that
- 5:58Speaker 3: moved moved me into traveling a little bit more for
- 6:02Speaker 3: just personal enjoyment. Uh, And every dime I made after
- 6:08Speaker 3: after college and getting up through all that stuff, I
- 6:10Speaker 3: spent on traveling the Southwest and getting out and doing
- 6:13Speaker 3: more and more and more. And it was a lot
- 6:15Speaker 3: of fun. I had a blast with it. And you
- 6:17Speaker 3: know that all who wanted not lost kind of thing. Yeah,
- 6:20Speaker 3: that was that was my mantra for a long time.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Got into into vehicles trucks. Started out with a sixty
- 6:29Speaker 3: seven Scout right hand drive Meal Jeep. That was that
- 6:33Speaker 3: was the cool of the skateboard mobile. And in college
- 6:36Speaker 3: went to a CJ three A at Willy's you had, Yeah, Yeah,
- 6:40Speaker 3: it was a CJ three A forty was the top
- 6:42Speaker 3: speed in the thing. But it climb a tree. Sure, sure,
- 6:45Speaker 3: So we flat tow that down to Moab.
- 6:47Speaker 1: And yeah, I've been I've been wanting to buy a
- 6:49Speaker 1: CJ two A or CJ three A for a very
- 6:52Speaker 1: long time.
- 6:52Speaker 4: I want to see J five. I don't know why.
- 6:54Speaker 4: I can't explain it.
- 6:55Speaker 3: It's a V eight in the Yeah, I.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Can explain it. I can do a lot.
- 7:00Speaker 2: I had a three oh four in it, yeah, for sure.
- 7:01Speaker 3: So I had had that three A and then a
- 7:04Speaker 3: friend of mine was deeply involved and still is with
- 7:06Speaker 3: Landrover in Utah, so I got into I had a
- 7:10Speaker 3: Series three eighty eight that we've put a full defender
- 7:12Speaker 3: interior in it and rebuild the engine in that. And
- 7:14Speaker 3: then I had a Series two A one oh nine
- 7:16Speaker 3: right hand drive out of Wales. For a little while,
- 7:18Speaker 3: I couldn't trust either of them out of the town.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Yeah, when you were driving around the town, you were awesome.
- 7:23Speaker 1: You were on Sofari in Salt Lake.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Yeah it was. They were cool, I mean.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Very sexy, super cool.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Yeah, very sexy vehicle.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Did yours stop because my one o nine two A
- 7:33Speaker 4: did not stop.
- 7:34Speaker 3: If you put your feet out on the ground.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Yeah, that was the most effective way to do it.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, I went through a lot of sand.
- 7:40Speaker 4: They had some kind of master cylinder that had like
- 7:42Speaker 4: a little air pocket, and the factory prescribed method was
- 7:46Speaker 4: to park the vehicle on a forty five degree slope
- 7:50Speaker 4: so you could bleed the brakes. So I'm like, we're
- 7:53Speaker 4: going to do that. No, I'm just not going to
- 7:57Speaker 4: have brakes.
- 7:58Speaker 3: I'll just go slow and yeah down hif Yeah, that's right.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Your Your land rover was awesome too, mad. I remember that.
- 8:05Speaker 2: It wasn't it like from a game park somewhere.
- 8:07Speaker 4: It was like imported from I want to say somewhere
- 8:10Speaker 4: that was right hand drive, so South Africa or England.
- 8:14Speaker 4: I was thinking South Africa based on the fact that
- 8:16Speaker 4: there was no rust, and then it lived on a
- 8:18Speaker 4: it was like out of It's like the out of
- 8:20Speaker 4: Africa game park in somewhere in Texas.
- 8:23Speaker 2: That's right there.
- 8:25Speaker 3: I remember the blue with.
- 8:26Speaker 2: The bulging on Ralph Ralph. Yeah, the land Rover. That
- 8:29Speaker 2: thing was awesome, though.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Mine wasn't so lucky. It came out of Wales and
- 8:32Speaker 3: it was a bucket.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Of rust, but it looked awesome, so broke the frame
- 8:37Speaker 4: and so in in in the capacity that I've known Paul,
- 8:40Speaker 4: you have been fanatical about land cruisers, is it? This?
- 8:44Speaker 4: Was it the one O nine's fault that you went Hartially.
- 8:49Speaker 3: A couple of things. One, the old vintage rovers were
- 8:52Speaker 3: pretty snooty bunch. If you did anything outside of rover
- 8:56Speaker 3: it was.
- 8:58Speaker 2: It's still this, It's still.
- 8:59Speaker 3: The same way. Yeah.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Yeah, if you could, if you put a tire wider
- 9:03Speaker 1: than ten inches on a land rover, yeah, your ex
- 9:05Speaker 1: communicat out.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Yeah you're out.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Let's see. I'm I'm I love unicorns, yeah, you know,
- 9:11Speaker 3: and that's I like to see what people can do
- 9:13Speaker 3: with them, and so I did. I hopped into Well
- 9:16Speaker 3: for necessity of something reliable that I could take out
- 9:20Speaker 3: of town to drive and wheel and come back and
- 9:21Speaker 3: still be in the same truck. That was one reason.
- 9:24Speaker 3: But I also like, I'd like to see what people
- 9:26Speaker 3: can do with them and modifying vehicles and so so Yeah,
- 9:28Speaker 3: so I went through. I bought a second Gen four
- 9:31Speaker 3: Runner back in the in the early nineties, proceeded to
- 9:35Speaker 3: roll it.
- 9:35Speaker 2: To to remember that story.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I was up in Snowholmush Pass and hit black
- 9:40Speaker 3: ice and did a seven to twenty on the road,
- 9:42Speaker 3: and then a horizontal seven to twenty off of the
- 9:45Speaker 3: road full on yard. Celle walked away with a scratch
- 9:48Speaker 3: of my nose and the car was dented in every panel,
- 9:51Speaker 3: and I was.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Like, dang, these are pretty good cars.
- 9:53Speaker 3: I went right back to Salt Lake and bought me
- 9:55Speaker 3: another one. Yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Yeah, the car saved your life.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, imagine a few in the land Rover, I mean,
- 10:01Speaker 1: or any Vantage vehicle when that happened.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Paul, Yeah, I.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Would not be around, that's yeah, aren't sure? So yeah.
- 10:10Speaker 3: So it started in the with the four runners, as
- 10:12Speaker 3: far as that goes, and I've been through a couple
- 10:14Speaker 3: of different pickups and from there I ended up with
- 10:18Speaker 3: the hundred series Anchors. There was actually my wife's car
- 10:20Speaker 3: to start with because I had another work truck and
- 10:23Speaker 3: some other things going on there. And when we started
- 10:25Speaker 3: up the started up, EQUIPPED told my wife I need it.
- 10:27Speaker 3: I need a truck to put all the stuff on.
- 10:30Speaker 3: She looked at me square in the eye, she says,
- 10:31Speaker 3: I'm not driving a tank. I want a car.
- 10:34Speaker 2: That was that.
- 10:35Speaker 4: She got a car, and I got it and got
- 10:37Speaker 4: as I got a tank out of it.
- 10:39Speaker 3: So yeah, and then we've got a.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Progression from there now on that on that one hundred
- 10:44Speaker 1: series land cruiser, because that was the one that you
- 10:46Speaker 1: had the longest, and I mean we did a bunch
- 10:49Speaker 1: of traveling together in that and you even competed in
- 10:52Speaker 1: valiantly in the expedition trophies of early days with that vehicle.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Talk a little bit about what you really liked about
- 11:00Speaker 1: you did with the vehicle, and then maybe some things
- 11:02Speaker 1: that you wouldn't do again or that you found were
- 11:04Speaker 1: maybe shortcomings of the hundred.
- 11:06Speaker 3: The hundred was a beast of a vehicle, and anything
- 11:09Speaker 3: I threw at it, it just didn't seem to care.
- 11:12Speaker 3: And I put more on it and more on it
- 11:14Speaker 3: and more on it, and it had everything you can imagine.
- 11:16Speaker 3: It's way over GVWR on that thing. And it was
- 11:20Speaker 3: a blast, and I had a wonderful time, and I
- 11:23Speaker 3: didn't want to get rid of it. And so I
- 11:27Speaker 3: think that what I did is I overbuilt it. There
- 11:30Speaker 3: was just too many systems trying to come out of
- 11:34Speaker 3: that one single vehicle. Now it's still running and still
- 11:36Speaker 3: going and doing fine for the gentleman that has it now.
- 11:40Speaker 3: I think that that was probably the one thing that
- 11:42Speaker 3: I would say that I did.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Is I overbuilt that truck?
- 11:46Speaker 4: Yeah, the cruisers are so heavy and stout to begin
- 11:49Speaker 4: with that they're easy to overbuild, though you know, you
- 11:52Speaker 4: kind of have to put o rear bumper on them.
- 11:55Speaker 4: You kind of need some sliders, you kind of need this,
- 11:58Speaker 4: And all of a sudden got an extra two three
- 12:01Speaker 4: hundred pounds of just stuff bolted before you put the
- 12:04Speaker 4: stuff in it.
- 12:05Speaker 3: And I had a forty five gallon auxiliary tank, so
- 12:07Speaker 3: I was carrying seventy two gallons on board that thing.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I could drive to LA and fill up and drive back.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Sure, there's no problem at all. So I think the
- 12:16Speaker 3: weight of all that stuff. But other than that, boy,
- 12:18Speaker 3: that was a lot of fun. A lot of it
- 12:20Speaker 3: was built by myself. I did a lot of things.
- 12:23Speaker 3: My first rack on there was an ATV ramp that
- 12:26Speaker 3: I bolted together and put some some oddball stuff on there.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Before we really got into the into the market of
- 12:32Speaker 3: what we see today as the overlanding market, it was
- 12:35Speaker 3: you were on your own if you wanted a rack.
- 12:37Speaker 2: There wasn't Yeah, there wasn't a whole lot.
- 12:39Speaker 1: I mean, And I think I think you and I
- 12:41Speaker 1: first started talking probably around two thousand and four or so,
- 12:46Speaker 1: does that sound right on the timeframe, maybe.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Five, I think five fall of five or early six.
- 12:52Speaker 1: I had been working with Nathan Hinman, who was working
- 12:55Speaker 1: on some of the easy On stuff, and then I
- 12:58Speaker 1: think you just called me up one day and you're like, hey,
- 13:02Speaker 1: I'm I'm Paul May and I'm the guy who's bringing
- 13:05Speaker 1: in all this cool easy On stuff. By the way,
- 13:09Speaker 1: thanks for all of the photos and all of the
- 13:11Speaker 1: coverage that you've been I mean, you were just very gracious.
- 13:13Speaker 1: I remember it was such a It left an impression
- 13:17Speaker 1: on me that first conversation. You were very gracious about it.
- 13:20Speaker 1: You were I remember you being very complimentary of Jess
- 13:24Speaker 1: and his dad, and I mean at the time, in fact,
- 13:27Speaker 1: I think that that's how you connected with easy On,
- 13:29Speaker 1: was that you you met one of the stoolers on
- 13:34Speaker 1: their way north right.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that quite honestly, where I am right now,
- 13:38Speaker 3: it wouldn't have happened without my involvement with Line Cruisistion.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Quite honestly, it wouldn't at all. Back in two thousand
- 13:45Speaker 3: and five, I was looking for a change in my life.
- 13:48Speaker 3: I've been working at the same company for going on
- 13:51Speaker 3: twenty twenty years and it was time for me to
- 13:54Speaker 3: do something different. And Jack Stuler, he was a founder
- 13:58Speaker 3: of easy On, and he was on a trip. He
- 14:00Speaker 3: was in his sixties, and I was with his girlfriend
- 14:02Speaker 3: and they had put together a troopie and had driven
- 14:05Speaker 3: it from Uwaya to Alaska and they came into Salt
- 14:09Speaker 3: Lake and I was in the presidency of our local
- 14:11Speaker 3: land Cruiser club and I invited him to stop and
- 14:14Speaker 3: let us see you never saw troopies aren't rare, especially.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Fifteen years ago, totally.
- 14:20Speaker 3: And so he stopped and we kind of hit it off,
- 14:23Speaker 3: and he had all these interesting things on this truck
- 14:26Speaker 3: I had never seen before, and he showed me all
- 14:29Speaker 3: of them, and he says, you know, anybody'd be interested
- 14:31Speaker 3: in bringing this stuff to the United States. And I
- 14:33Speaker 3: started to say somebody else's name, and my wife punched me,
- 14:36Speaker 3: and the arm looked at me, like, you idiots. Just
- 14:40Speaker 3: there's that look. You get the look right, No words
- 14:43Speaker 3: have said, so just give me that look. And I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 14:46Speaker 3: you're right, I am an idiot. And I said, hey,
- 14:49Speaker 3: can we talk about this tomorrow? And I spent a
- 14:50Speaker 3: sleepless night thought it over and decided I'm gonna start
- 14:53Speaker 3: a company. Told Jack that the next day, and we
- 14:55Speaker 3: met with the whole Landage Cruiser Club and I flew
- 14:58Speaker 3: down to Houston when he was backing it up to leave,
- 15:00Speaker 3: and I said, I'm serious, looked him in the eye.
- 15:02Speaker 3: We shook hands, and that's the only deal we've made.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Wow.
- 15:05Speaker 3: And it's been a gentleman's agreement ever since. I think
- 15:08Speaker 3: the stoolers, Jack and his son Jess, Jess is running
- 15:13Speaker 3: easy on now. True gentlemen.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Yeah, incredible, were and above true.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Gentlemen and gentlemen, and they are loyal and honorable men,
- 15:21Speaker 3: and I'm privileged to be involved with that company. So
- 15:25Speaker 3: we started out at that point. I started the company
- 15:28Speaker 3: up and our first show was was the Eastern jep
- 15:32Speaker 3: Sofarani in two thousand and six. And I show up
- 15:35Speaker 3: with this truck and man park it down in the
- 15:36Speaker 3: middle of that booth area. I'm right across from Ksey Highlights,
- 15:40Speaker 3: and they're semi and all this stuff, right, and these
- 15:43Speaker 3: guys are walking by with the tank tops and the
- 15:45Speaker 3: beers and they're staring at my thing like I had
- 15:47Speaker 3: a third head, and they're like, what's that. I haven't
- 15:50Speaker 3: seen anything like that, and I talked to the KC
- 15:52Speaker 3: guys and they're like, well, welcome to the Super Bowl,
- 15:54Speaker 3: young man. And I'm sitting over there by myself, you know, like, hey,
- 15:57Speaker 3: look at me. I'm cool. And yeah, it was a
- 16:00Speaker 3: very interesting start. Yeah, Yeah, that was kind of the
- 16:02Speaker 3: start of the whole thing is we brought stuff in
- 16:04Speaker 3: an early time.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Now Casey has roof tents on their vehicles. Life comes circle.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a pretty interesting start for sure.
- 16:14Speaker 1: And yeah, my experience with the students have also been that.
- 16:17Speaker 1: And in fact, I remember when we were preparing the
- 16:20Speaker 1: land cruisers. We came into Africa and you were with
- 16:23Speaker 1: me and Greg and Kurt and the team from Expedition
- 16:28Speaker 1: seven in Africa. We did that whole trip together. We
- 16:30Speaker 1: did Botswana and the Skeleton Coast and that was just
- 16:34Speaker 1: an incredible experience. And Jess and Jack let us just
- 16:39Speaker 1: basically store those trucks in their shop for a long
- 16:43Speaker 1: time months before we sent them off for Antarctica. On
- 16:47Speaker 1: the E seven experience, what were some of the things
- 16:51Speaker 1: that you noticed, because sometimes I have trouble seeing the
- 16:54Speaker 1: forest for the trees, but since you were involved with
- 16:58Speaker 1: E seven for that one leg, what were some of
- 17:01Speaker 1: the things that you took away from that, things that
- 17:03Speaker 1: maybe you recognize is that's a really good idea, or
- 17:07Speaker 1: maybe that isn't such a good idea. What were some
- 17:09Speaker 1: of the things some of the takeaways that you had
- 17:11Speaker 1: from Expedition seven.
- 17:12Speaker 3: I think the biggest thing I took away was your
- 17:14Speaker 3: philosophy on the builds on the troopies. Out of that
- 17:17Speaker 3: and how you took took great care to make sure
- 17:21Speaker 3: that they were they were light and nimble and functional,
- 17:24Speaker 3: and you had a lot of capability that you probably
- 17:26Speaker 3: would never use, but you had it in case something happened.
- 17:31Speaker 3: You had an ability to take care of it, of
- 17:32Speaker 3: everybody and your crew if you lost one of them
- 17:35Speaker 3: for some reason. And I thought that was that was
- 17:39Speaker 3: pretty cool. I mean, it was a different take than
- 17:41Speaker 3: I had taken on vehicles at that point. You know,
- 17:43Speaker 3: I was throwing all the stuff out of my good
- 17:45Speaker 3: of course, I'm in the market.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, that's what I do.
- 17:47Speaker 3: I sell stuff, so you show the stuff, right, and
- 17:50Speaker 3: I still do and I still have that stuff on there.
- 17:52Speaker 3: But I thought it was a really good way of
- 17:53Speaker 3: going about that. And it's preservation of assets and some
- 17:56Speaker 3: of the things you've taught me early on too. That
- 17:58Speaker 3: one was really cool. Also learned that there is a
- 18:01Speaker 3: rev limitter on a sixty series or a seventy series
- 18:05Speaker 3: land Cruiser with a four speed and V six. When
- 18:09Speaker 3: we were out in the and the Oh yeah, I
- 18:11Speaker 3: got to ride with the gentleman that was our scout.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Yeah that's right, man, he's he just just wrapped that
- 18:18Speaker 3: thing out. Yeah, trip out in the Skeleton coast, and
- 18:24Speaker 3: so I got to ride along with the guy figuring
- 18:26Speaker 3: out where we're going. And he was high marking this
- 18:28Speaker 3: thing like a snowmobile.
- 18:29Speaker 2: He was so good. He was so good at it. Yeah.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Yeah, and it like didn't and he had like a
- 18:35Speaker 1: colostomy baged. It was just like the most unusual experience.
- 18:38Speaker 1: I mean, he was just this ninja on the dunes,
- 18:41Speaker 1: but you know the yeah, and he just needed he
- 18:44Speaker 1: needed his magic carpet.
- 18:45Speaker 2: It was incredible how well he could drive.
- 18:47Speaker 3: And we had these you know, these fairly heavy trucks
- 18:49Speaker 3: for what they but they were underweight but still a
- 18:51Speaker 3: heavy truck, kind of lumbering behind going across the thing.
- 18:56Speaker 3: And he's a little I was like hair on fire.
- 19:00Speaker 3: I'm going, oh god, this is this is awesome. Yeah,
- 19:03Speaker 3: and that was a lot of fun. First helicopter ride
- 19:05Speaker 3: that I ever took in my life was on that
- 19:07Speaker 3: trip up in the Okevando.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Yeah, in that delta there.
- 19:11Speaker 3: And getting up in that glora fied Volkswagen Beetle with.
- 19:15Speaker 1: An R forty four man. It's the most it's the
- 19:19Speaker 1: most deadly helicopter ever made.
- 19:20Speaker 2: It was perfect.
- 19:21Speaker 3: It was such an awesome feeling to be up and
- 19:25Speaker 3: above that and see all that going on.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:28Speaker 3: The wildlife, right, Yeah, the wildlife was impressive, even out
- 19:31Speaker 3: on the Skelton Coast.
- 19:32Speaker 2: The wildlife was impressive. Yeah, for sure.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Four days out there by yourself and the dunes and
- 19:36Speaker 3: there's nobody. Yeah, we were it driving on on Ruby Sand.
- 19:41Speaker 2: I know, it was incredible.
- 19:42Speaker 3: Seeing them, seeing those ships locked in on you know,
- 19:45Speaker 3: one hundred meters from a thousand meters from from the coast.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Just things ingrained in my memory and I will never forget. Yeah,
- 19:53Speaker 3: thanks to you guys. So it was a wonderful trip.
- 19:56Speaker 2: I really, it really was such a great time. I was.
- 19:59Speaker 1: I remember when we first started getting into the dunes
- 20:02Speaker 1: and those seventies were just struggling. We were we weren't
- 20:05Speaker 1: even half a mile in and we weren't even into
- 20:09Speaker 1: the big dunes yet, and these trucks were struggling.
- 20:11Speaker 4: Those dudes are big.
- 20:13Speaker 2: They're big, They're really big.
- 20:15Speaker 1: And I remember a couple there was a couple members
- 20:17Speaker 1: of the team that they were starting to get very
- 20:20Speaker 1: nervous and like, we're never gonna like, we haven't even
- 20:23Speaker 1: made it half a mile yet, and we've got to
- 20:25Speaker 1: go hundreds of miles. And I just kept saying, it's
- 20:28Speaker 1: we're going to find the right tire pressure, We're going
- 20:30Speaker 1: to find the right tire, and we kept getting lower
- 20:32Speaker 1: and lower, and I think we ended up running those trucks,
- 20:35Speaker 1: as I recall, at about ten psi in the rear
- 20:39Speaker 1: and about twelve psi up front, and I did we
- 20:42Speaker 1: did lose some beads on the wheels, but it was
- 20:44Speaker 1: the only way you could get them through was just
- 20:47Speaker 1: very very low pressures.
- 20:49Speaker 3: And good spotting on them.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and good we had great drivers and stuff like that.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I mean, showed how amazing of a driver Kurd is
- 20:56Speaker 1: to haul that seventy nine filled with all that few
- 21:00Speaker 1: and everything like this.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Yeah, and he does just and it doesn't I haven't
- 21:04Speaker 3: yet to find anything that affects.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, he's he's good with whatever.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Ye that's we got to break the truck and you
- 21:11Speaker 4: know in Greenland, great, I get on and fixing that.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Whatever it is. Curtis is swayed in his activities. That
- 21:18Speaker 3: was cool. The other thing that I really remember is
- 21:20Speaker 3: going down the dunes. Okay, so sand can only effectively
- 21:23Speaker 3: get to a forty five degree angle on the sand.
- 21:26Speaker 3: You'd lean over those sand dunes and they.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Would growl at you.
- 21:29Speaker 3: You get the car and he's like right in the
- 21:33Speaker 3: sand because there's so much air in those sand dunes
- 21:35Speaker 3: because they've been blowing around. We're compressing that air out
- 21:37Speaker 3: of them. And the growling that came out of these
- 21:39Speaker 3: hills as you're going down it was.
- 21:41Speaker 1: And I've never I've never experienced that in any other
- 21:44Speaker 1: sand dunes. So in Peru, in the Gobi and any
- 21:47Speaker 1: other sand dunes, I've never experienced that growling effect.
- 21:51Speaker 2: It was. It was unnerving. It was like a lion.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Growing Where's that? You got to go back, man, I
- 21:59Speaker 1: gotta go back.
- 22:00Speaker 2: You got to go back. It wassive.
- 22:01Speaker 3: It was awesome.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I think seven we'll all three of us have
- 22:06Speaker 1: been on that in various stages.
- 22:08Speaker 4: I want to go back to Africa. You're talking about Africa.
- 22:11Speaker 4: I'm just like, nothing else matters anymore. I don't care
- 22:14Speaker 4: about mo I don't care about the Mojave Road. Take
- 22:16Speaker 4: me back to Africa.
- 22:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I've had some wonderful experiences over there, and I
- 22:21Speaker 3: love going.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Over there, and it's just not what people think it is,
- 22:24Speaker 4: you know. I feel like there's a there's a strong apprehension,
- 22:28Speaker 4: like I always get people that ask me, aren't you
- 22:31Speaker 4: are you worried about being there? I'm like, well, if
- 22:33Speaker 4: I went home to Chicago, I'd be a little.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Bit way more worried.
- 22:37Speaker 4: I'd feel a little bit more worried than you know,
- 22:39Speaker 4: like the worst thing that's going to happen, you know
- 22:42Speaker 4: in Namibia is you know you're going to start to
- 22:44Speaker 4: death because there's no one there, which means there's no
- 22:46Speaker 4: one there to commit a crime exactly.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Yeah. You know, there's I think four or five cities
- 22:51Speaker 3: in the United States that are more dangerous than No Question,
- 22:54Speaker 3: Jo No Question in the list of crime issues. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 22:59Speaker 3: there are issues.
- 23:00Speaker 4: I'm giving It still sketches me out, let's be straight.
- 23:02Speaker 3: It is.
- 23:03Speaker 4: But I remember when you picked me up at the airport,
- 23:04Speaker 4: You're like, we gotta be careful driving it. I'm like
- 23:06Speaker 4: we're on the highways, Like, yeah, we gotta be careful
- 23:09Speaker 4: driving it.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 23:11Speaker 3: There are issues, Don't get me wrong. There are There
- 23:13Speaker 3: are certain issues, but there are issues everywhere. There are
- 23:15Speaker 3: certain areas in Los Angeles I don't drive, yeah, or
- 23:19Speaker 3: Chicago or East Saint Louis or you know, you can
- 23:22Speaker 3: pick them out and you just don't go there, or
- 23:24Speaker 3: if you do, you go with people.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Well, and I was picking you up at the airport
- 23:27Speaker 1: in a g wagon and I'm like, we're going to
- 23:29Speaker 1: just like, we're gonna stick to this one route.
- 23:32Speaker 2: It was like that.
- 23:34Speaker 4: When COVID was starting to be a thing. Yeah, I remember,
- 23:37Speaker 4: like when it was like the last trip.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it was the last trip we were all on. Dang,
- 23:45Speaker 1: it's a while ago, totally. What was your favorite trip
- 23:49Speaker 1: in Africa, even if it's you know, let's not assume
- 23:52Speaker 1: that it's East seven. What's been one of the most
- 23:55Speaker 1: memorable adventures that you've had on that continent.
- 23:59Speaker 3: And I'm gonna say a couple Okay, had a chance
- 24:02Speaker 3: to go with Jack and Jess out to Kruger National
- 24:06Speaker 3: Park and travel over that park also went with you
- 24:10Speaker 3: and we and we went up and did that incredible
- 24:14Speaker 3: trip with that medik way right. Yeah, I think it
- 24:17Speaker 3: was in that that in Paula that ran into the
- 24:19Speaker 3: side of the Oh yeah, and.
- 24:20Speaker 2: The wild dogs. Yet I wasn't that wild Matt.
- 24:24Speaker 1: So Matt and I have been having a conversation about Africa,
- 24:26Speaker 1: and I said, I said, Mat, I'm just telling you
- 24:28Speaker 1: from my own screw up do the morning game drives,
- 24:31Speaker 1: because I was the one guy who was.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Like, oh, I'm going to sleep in this day.
- 24:35Speaker 1: And Bruce and paul and whoever else, I mean maybe
- 24:39Speaker 1: Jess was there too. They all go out and and
- 24:42Speaker 1: I Paula runs into the side of the game truck
- 24:46Speaker 1: like center punches, it knocks itself out, and then a
- 24:49Speaker 1: pack of wild dogs devour it right over the vehicle,
- 24:53Speaker 1: like right next to the vehicle.
- 24:55Speaker 3: From me to you, it was like air breathing piranha.
- 24:59Speaker 3: I mean they left like three bones out of this
- 25:01Speaker 3: poor little animal. You're looking at. You've got your camera
- 25:04Speaker 3: in your hair, and you're.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Like and all of a sun and off they go.
- 25:10Speaker 3: And I was like, good God, crazy stuff.
- 25:13Speaker 2: So yeah, and I missed that one. I missed it.
- 25:16Speaker 2: That was what I told Madam, Like Matt, I missed
- 25:17Speaker 2: the coolest thing.
- 25:18Speaker 4: I've got one hundred days until Tanzania.
- 25:20Speaker 3: So yeah, that was a good one. I had to
- 25:23Speaker 3: get Kalahati on the other side, Oh sure, just below
- 25:27Speaker 3: then maybe a beautiful place, lots of animals outside. But
- 25:30Speaker 3: the one it sounds gonna sound funny, the most memorable
- 25:33Speaker 3: trip that I've had over there. I went with Heather
- 25:36Speaker 3: on and it was more of a cruise touring we took.
- 25:40Speaker 3: We flew down to uh Port Elizabeth on the southeast coast.
- 25:45Speaker 3: We were rented a Mercedes and they decided upgraatest to
- 25:48Speaker 3: a jeep Grand cherokeeos less than excited about that. Come on,
- 25:53Speaker 3: really this, come on, where's the murk? And we did
- 26:00Speaker 3: a garden route.
- 26:03Speaker 2: The whole sum Yeah, it was beautiful, and.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Went to the National Parks and rented one of their
- 26:07Speaker 3: cottages in the National Parks and saw that all happen.
- 26:10Speaker 3: We bungee jumped off the highest bungee jump on the planet,
- 26:14Speaker 3: six hundred and seventy foot crevasse that we jumped off
- 26:18Speaker 3: a perfectly good bridge by our ankle. That was that
- 26:20Speaker 3: feel fun feel.
- 26:23Speaker 4: Noodle afterwards, like did it like kind of I imagine
- 26:26Speaker 4: you get a great backcrack.
- 26:29Speaker 3: What they did is they lined you up by size.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Well guess where I was, right, So I got to
- 26:33Speaker 3: watch all of.
- 26:34Speaker 2: The people in front of me lined up there.
- 26:36Speaker 3: And the first one say, the gals were a little
- 26:38Speaker 3: bit scary. It's what they do is they touch you
- 26:41Speaker 3: all over. Like the Heather was up there getting ready
- 26:43Speaker 3: and she was getting all nerved out, and so they
- 26:44Speaker 3: were checking things, you know, and they kept her mind busy.
- 26:47Speaker 3: So she's watching them check them all, you know, check
- 26:49Speaker 3: all over. And they said, okay, we're going to count
- 26:51Speaker 3: to the three and you're gonna go one, two three.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Oh that's all I heard, was my life off that
- 27:00Speaker 3: they she comes back, they go grab you with a winch.
- 27:03Speaker 3: It's like a high speed like one of the eighty
- 27:06Speaker 3: two seventy four winch.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Right, they drop a guy down on a cable, hook
- 27:10Speaker 3: you on and winch you back up to the bridge.
- 27:13Speaker 3: And then I did the jump, and I was a
- 27:14Speaker 3: heavy guy. I think I went the furthest I mean,
- 27:16Speaker 3: there's enough time to scream twice, you know, if you
- 27:18Speaker 3: wanted to breathe in and scream again.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Go yeah, wow, And it was.
- 27:22Speaker 2: It was a lot of fun and all the teeming
- 27:24Speaker 2: crocodiles down right.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Well hopefully we were ways up from the from the
- 27:30Speaker 3: bottom there, but it was quite a good jump. And
- 27:32Speaker 3: we went from there, ended up south of Cape Town
- 27:34Speaker 3: and went out with the sharks the boat and went
- 27:38Speaker 3: swimming with the sharks for a while. And cages off of.
- 27:40Speaker 2: That Great Whites. Yeah, oh incredible. How was that cool?
- 27:45Speaker 2: All sorts of cool.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Now are you are you on like a rebreather or
- 27:50Speaker 1: a regulator to a line to the boat, or you
- 27:53Speaker 1: have your own tank on or how are you staying there?
- 27:55Speaker 3: What they did they set it up as cages off
- 27:57Speaker 3: the side of the boat, and so the cages were
- 27:59Speaker 3: going on about six feet in depth and they had
- 28:02Speaker 3: about two feet of air above so and we all
- 28:06Speaker 3: had tanks and we're all in the gear and so
- 28:08Speaker 3: you'd climb into the cage and the sharks were out
- 28:10Speaker 3: and about, so you could you could get your breather
- 28:12Speaker 3: and go down under the water and be like meet
- 28:14Speaker 3: a you from these great Whites that were swimming around
- 28:17Speaker 3: in that area.
- 28:18Speaker 4: And did they care about you? Were they trying to
- 28:20Speaker 4: eat you?
- 28:21Speaker 2: No?
- 28:22Speaker 3: They you know, they swim by the one.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Eye and stick you out your hand out.
- 28:28Speaker 3: Please don't stick your hands out of this place. So
- 28:31Speaker 3: they really honestly didn't care to give a crap about
- 28:33Speaker 3: us being there. But it was really interesting. We got
- 28:36Speaker 3: to see some of them. Gat It's one of them
- 28:38Speaker 3: was about half the length.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Of the boat.
- 28:40Speaker 3: I bet it was close to twenty feet wow. Twenty
- 28:43Speaker 3: feet long.
- 28:44Speaker 4: Wow.
- 28:44Speaker 3: And videos of the whole thing and we did that.
- 28:46Speaker 3: That was kind of cool. Super jumped off lionhead on
- 28:49Speaker 3: a parasol and did all sorts of fun things that
- 28:51Speaker 3: were just more of a of an adventure for us
- 28:53Speaker 3: in a personal sense than driving off in trucks.
- 28:56Speaker 2: And going r Yeah. Sure we're in the middle.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Of nowhere of that, but I also love just going
- 29:02Speaker 3: in and for the sheer adventure of being in a
- 29:05Speaker 3: new place and finding new things.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Yeah, both sides of that, oh, no question. Yeah, you
- 29:09Speaker 1: got to have the full spectrum. It's like Matt and
- 29:11Speaker 1: I have talked many times about, like how do we
- 29:13Speaker 1: get beyond the truck and maybe that's a mountain bike,
- 29:16Speaker 1: maybe it's hiking. Maybe it's that you just want to
- 29:18Speaker 1: go to that beautiful winery at the end of the day,
- 29:21Speaker 1: you talked about doing a Bourbon tour coming up or
- 29:23Speaker 1: something like that. I think including those those other elements
- 29:27Speaker 1: is so important.
- 29:28Speaker 3: So the trip just yea feed in other things as
- 29:31Speaker 3: you can, because the people that are there and know
- 29:33Speaker 3: what's going on, so not all of those little touristy
- 29:35Speaker 3: things are bad. Yeah, it's a lot of fun.
- 29:37Speaker 4: I'm just thinking about about wine pining a trip around
- 29:43Speaker 4: wine at this point, just like a rose tour, a
- 29:46Speaker 4: rose tour of Provence. But we can call it overlanding.
- 29:50Speaker 3: Yeah, somehow overlanding in your ninety Yeah, I'm overlanding.
- 29:56Speaker 4: It's a pretty uh empty term at this point.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's now completely up to interpretation. Adventure
- 30:05Speaker 2: vehicle travel, right.
- 30:07Speaker 4: We're venture vehicle travel.
- 30:08Speaker 3: Yeah, so if that you know that forces of interest,
- 30:12Speaker 3: how about it?
- 30:12Speaker 2: That's right? Yeah, you could.
- 30:14Speaker 1: It could be a Porsche from Rose Winery to Rose
- 30:18Speaker 1: Winery in the South.
- 30:19Speaker 4: You know, that would be a really great idea, except
- 30:21Speaker 4: I wouldn't really make it past the first one.
- 30:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it could be an issue.
- 30:28Speaker 4: So you have a two hundred series now and you
- 30:30Speaker 4: like it.
- 30:31Speaker 2: I love that truck.
- 30:32Speaker 4: It's kind of like it's my baby it's your baby.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Second baby, though, Yeah, I do. We took the hundred
- 30:38Speaker 3: series as far as I think it could could go.
- 30:41Speaker 3: We were one of the first people to really build
- 30:43Speaker 3: up one hundred series, and so there was a lot
- 30:44Speaker 3: of folks who look at that. We traded it in
- 30:47Speaker 3: for a fifth Gen four Runner twenty thirteen Trail Edition.
- 30:51Speaker 4: I remember that one. That's when you were in Prescott.
- 30:53Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, we bought that and built that up, and
- 30:56Speaker 3: Clay and his crew took that as an impetus to
- 30:59Speaker 3: start their fore Runners too. They looked at a lot
- 31:00Speaker 3: what we did with that four hundred and said, hey man,
- 31:02Speaker 3: this is a great flat it's cool, wonderful truck. Did
- 31:05Speaker 3: anything I asked?
- 31:06Speaker 4: I remember you saying that in dimensions it was very
- 31:10Speaker 4: similar to one hundred series, very much, even though it
- 31:13Speaker 4: looked slightly smaller than one hundred. That's something that's always
- 31:18Speaker 4: kind of stuck with me.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Very capable truck. It hauled on my little at Chaser
- 31:23Speaker 3: around better than the hundred did with the V six.
- 31:28Speaker 3: The one thing I kept on telling everybody is the
- 31:30Speaker 3: reason why I like it more than the hundred is
- 31:33Speaker 3: because it was lighter. Yeah, but the worst thing about.
- 31:35Speaker 2: It is that it was lighter, Yeah, felt lighter.
- 31:38Speaker 3: Yeah, lighter, the metals a little bit lighter. All of
- 31:41Speaker 3: all the things about it made it a more efficient vehicle, right,
- 31:44Speaker 3: And so it outperformed the hundred, no question, but it
- 31:48Speaker 3: was I missed my hundred, Yeah, I missed my hundred,
- 31:52Speaker 3: and so we ended up getting a white twenty thirteen
- 31:55Speaker 3: to two hundred series that that vehicle. I haven't found
- 31:58Speaker 3: an equal in my in my eye, there's there's not
- 32:00Speaker 3: an equal to that vehicle.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:02Speaker 1: And just this morning we went out and did a
- 32:04Speaker 1: nice video shoot on that. So all those that are listening,
- 32:07Speaker 1: you'll see that come up on the YouTube channel expedition
- 32:10Speaker 1: Portal dot com or Expedition Portal on YouTube. You'll see
- 32:13Speaker 1: that come up soon. But what I really noticed in
- 32:17Speaker 1: this particular build, having seen so many of your projects,
- 32:20Speaker 1: is that this really is like the full culmination of
- 32:23Speaker 1: your experience as a traveler and as a vehicle builder.
- 32:26Speaker 2: And it's just a really thoughtful, thoughtful truck.
- 32:29Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 32:30Speaker 1: And what are the things that you like most about
- 32:32Speaker 1: this one? The modification? What are the couple modifications that
- 32:34Speaker 1: you've done that you most liked about, you know, or
- 32:37Speaker 1: that you most appreciate.
- 32:39Speaker 3: Well the start out with good tires and suspension. I
- 32:42Speaker 3: keep to try it. I try my best to keep
- 32:44Speaker 3: it as simple as possible, and most I don't know,
- 32:47Speaker 3: durable as possible. The ones that I really liked the
- 32:52Speaker 3: work that Goose Gear did on the interior back when
- 32:55Speaker 3: when Goose Gear had time to do things. They're very
- 32:57Speaker 3: busy now. But I had a custom goose Gear build
- 33:00Speaker 3: in the inside equal to the weight that I took
- 33:02Speaker 3: out of out of seats, put it back in there
- 33:04Speaker 3: with a lot more functionality. Now I can sleep in
- 33:07Speaker 3: that vehicle when I run by myself. I screwed the
- 33:10Speaker 3: passenger seat forward and chile forward, and I've got six
- 33:15Speaker 3: foot seven inside.
- 33:17Speaker 4: Wow.
- 33:18Speaker 3: So I throw through a rest down and sleeping bag
- 33:19Speaker 3: and just like the East seven, try to like I'm
- 33:21Speaker 3: getting full circle here. Like the Seven's sleep inside, You've
- 33:25Speaker 3: got a lot of visibility, a lot of protection. You
- 33:28Speaker 3: can get out of something fast if you need to,
- 33:30Speaker 3: especially if you're solo. That works out really well. One
- 33:34Speaker 3: of the other things that I figured out it didn't
- 33:36Speaker 3: take long is on a trip to Australia, I looked
- 33:38Speaker 3: around looking for roof racks, and there aren't any roof
- 33:40Speaker 3: racks on vehicles. They're all running load bars and the
- 33:43Speaker 3: reason why is because of the weight restrictions on the vehicles, right,
- 33:46Speaker 3: So guys are trying to run light. All those load
- 33:48Speaker 3: bars instead of racks is saving weight. Load bars are
- 33:51Speaker 3: working just as fine under a hardshell or a soft
- 33:53Speaker 3: shell rooftop tent. It's redundant to have a rack underneath
- 33:56Speaker 3: that scenario. So I'm running load bars on mine instead.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Of a full act that. I noticed that.
- 34:01Speaker 3: Yeah, just about all the weight in that vehicle is
- 34:04Speaker 3: below waist high in my vehicle.
- 34:07Speaker 4: That's cool.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Well, I was watching it on the trail today. I mean,
- 34:10Speaker 1: we went through that very crossed axle downhill obstacle, and
- 34:16Speaker 1: the vehicle was very settled. Even with a roof tent
- 34:19Speaker 1: and an awning up top. All the vehicle was really
- 34:22Speaker 1: you know, the the F two fifty tremor that I
- 34:25Speaker 1: was driving was like dancing wheels, like let me, let
- 34:29Speaker 1: me we lift to this to the moon on this side,
- 34:32Speaker 1: and then we'll lift to the moon on the other side.
- 34:34Speaker 2: And yours, your truck was totally stable.
- 34:36Speaker 3: See now, yeah, there's i mean above above chest high
- 34:39Speaker 3: in that vehicle. There's maybe three hundred and fifty pounds. Yeah,
- 34:43Speaker 3: that includes the roof of the vehicle. Yeah, so there's
- 34:45Speaker 3: not a lot of weight in relative terms to the
- 34:47Speaker 3: rest of the vehicle. Yeah, above waist high on that.
- 34:50Speaker 3: So so it's a good fit.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Is there anything you'd do different with that truck if
- 34:54Speaker 1: you were to build it again, Something that you'd leave
- 34:56Speaker 1: out or do or use a different solution.
- 34:58Speaker 3: For no cool, Not one thing.
- 35:02Speaker 4: Uh.
- 35:02Speaker 3: In the older vehicles, I did a lot of electrical
- 35:05Speaker 3: built up, all sorts of systems and relays and switches
- 35:08Speaker 3: and do dads and bills and all this stuff. I'm
- 35:10Speaker 3: down to a six circuit blue seafuse block. I didn't
- 35:14Speaker 3: need all of that stuff. Now with LED lights, you
- 35:16Speaker 3: don't need all the relays, you don't need all that stuff.
- 35:18Speaker 4: You have all the switch pro switch s pod you.
- 35:23Speaker 3: Can, Yeah, but I don't and I don't even have to.
- 35:26Speaker 3: You don't have to do any of that if you're
- 35:27Speaker 3: into that. Awesome. But what I found is that when
- 35:30Speaker 3: I built it in there, I never used it. The
- 35:32Speaker 3: one hundred series had a hot water system in it.
- 35:34Speaker 3: I had a hot water heat shower system built into
- 35:37Speaker 3: the thing. It was like a two thousand dollars gizmo
- 35:39Speaker 3: I used twice. Yeah, come on, you know, it's a
- 35:42Speaker 3: lot of weight and a lot of the necessary stuff.
- 35:44Speaker 3: So we've really tapled it all down and blended it
- 35:47Speaker 3: all out. And this is a bit umpteeth to build
- 35:50Speaker 3: on a truck. So I've got it down to what
- 35:52Speaker 3: I want and that's fine with me.
- 35:53Speaker 4: I've definitely found that as I build more vehicles, less
- 35:57Speaker 4: is more, you know, Like I with Michael, I tried
- 36:00Speaker 4: to make it a little sailboat, and I now kind
- 36:03Speaker 4: of regret that because I have all this weight in
- 36:05Speaker 4: all this complexity, and I'm like, well, I could have
- 36:09Speaker 4: also just had a fan and a light in there
- 36:11Speaker 4: and probably have been just as happy.
- 36:16Speaker 3: Utah.
- 36:17Speaker 4: Yeah, so you are from Utah, born and raised and raised.
- 36:21Speaker 4: So for those listeners who haven't been, what's the what's
- 36:26Speaker 4: the one thing people should see in Utah?
- 36:28Speaker 3: I'd say, just don't come.
- 36:30Speaker 2: It's just just.
- 36:30Speaker 4: I've heard it's really bad and dangerous, us super dangerous.
- 36:35Speaker 3: No it h And Scott's alluded to this over the years,
- 36:39Speaker 3: and I've heard him say it in quite a few places.
- 36:41Speaker 3: He's been a lot of places. This guy, you know,
- 36:43Speaker 3: this guy here has been a long, he's been a
- 36:44Speaker 3: few and his favorite place is southern Utah. And I
- 36:49Speaker 3: would agree one hundred percent. I know, I've been traveling
- 36:52Speaker 3: southern Utah for going on forty years and I have
- 36:56Speaker 3: not seen it all. And a couple of our friends
- 36:58Speaker 3: have seen more probably seen it all, but I have
- 37:02Speaker 3: not seen it all. And it is just spectacular. There's
- 37:04Speaker 3: nothing else that I have seen on the planet like it.
- 37:07Speaker 4: Well, there's such diversity of terrain in Utah. You know,
- 37:10Speaker 4: you have alpine and then you have these like other
- 37:13Speaker 4: worldly rock eroded sculptures.
- 37:16Speaker 3: Yeah, from you know, from the Arches area, with three
- 37:20Speaker 3: National parks within that range. Bryce Canyon's amazing scion is amazing.
- 37:27Speaker 3: The whole Escalante area is impressive. Sentrafels, Well, I mean
- 37:32Speaker 3: I could go on for forever. And I've done a
- 37:34Speaker 3: couple of little seminars. At some of the events that
- 37:36Speaker 3: we've done, We're all sit down and for an hour.
- 37:39Speaker 3: I take out the paper map, the Utah state official
- 37:43Speaker 3: paper map, and I lay it out and I start
- 37:45Speaker 3: in the northwest corner of the state and I go
- 37:47Speaker 3: to the southeast corner and I say, go here, see this,
- 37:50Speaker 3: this is a great camp spot. Don't miss a burger
- 37:52Speaker 3: at rays and Green.
- 37:53Speaker 4: River to a Yeah.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Another place we've all been together is raised.
- 37:59Speaker 3: And point out all the things and you could spend
- 38:03Speaker 3: a couple months easily doing nothing but going on or
- 38:07Speaker 3: route around the state. It's life changing for me. It's
- 38:10Speaker 3: it's my life. That's what I really enjoy to do.
- 38:13Speaker 3: Is Yeah, Southern Utah. I'm a Utah boy. Yeah, it's
- 38:15Speaker 3: through and through. Northern Utah is beautiful. There's a lot
- 38:18Speaker 3: of alpine there, but there's alpine in Southern Utah too.
- 38:21Speaker 3: We drive up to over ten thousand feet in Southern
- 38:24Speaker 3: Utah and get way above tree line if you want
- 38:27Speaker 3: to do that kind of stuff. It's it's a lot
- 38:28Speaker 3: of fun too. But there's so much area to cover and.
- 38:32Speaker 4: It's so accessible too. I think that's like really the
- 38:35Speaker 4: cool thing for people that are, you know, considering planning
- 38:38Speaker 4: a trip to Utah is that there's not a lot
- 38:40Speaker 4: of private land, so much of it is public, so
- 38:43Speaker 4: much of it is accessible. And I love it.
- 38:46Speaker 3: There, Yeah, I do too. And so as far as
- 38:49Speaker 3: one place to go, do.
- 38:50Speaker 4: You guys ever find yourselves you're in wherever and you're
- 38:54Speaker 4: like that looks like Utah.
- 38:56Speaker 1: Yeah, totally do, except except that there's so much of
- 38:59Speaker 1: that in Utah. I mean the fact that you've got
- 39:01Speaker 1: you know, I mean canyon lands alone. You could it
- 39:05Speaker 1: seems like you could spend a lifetime exploring that.
- 39:08Speaker 3: Oh in the backpacking options down the yeah Sandless. Have
- 39:11Speaker 3: you guys ever been to Capitolcia, Turkey?
- 39:13Speaker 2: No so you yeah, you went there recently?
- 39:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:16Speaker 3: Well the balloons there, right, Yeah, they do the hot
- 39:18Speaker 3: air ballooning above first Limestone, right, and it was kind
- 39:23Speaker 3: of a crossroads between the East West and on the
- 39:25Speaker 3: Silk Round and in that area, you know, coming down
- 39:28Speaker 3: from from well the crossing there in Turkey. It's impressive.
- 39:33Speaker 3: We went up and did the hot air balloons. I
- 39:34Speaker 3: had a friend that was in the military over there,
- 39:35Speaker 3: and so we went over and said hi, and he
- 39:37Speaker 3: took us around there a little ways. But that whole
- 39:39Speaker 3: area reminded me of Bryce with different colors. Wow. Oh
- 39:44Speaker 3: and by the way, they made caves in Bryce.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Yeah sure, but yeah, they had.
- 39:48Speaker 3: You know, hundreds of years of people living in the
- 39:51Speaker 3: caves in like Bryce Canyon, only white.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:54Speaker 3: Sure. Yeah. You go around the world and you're like, yeah,
- 39:56Speaker 3: that's like here, that's like that you assimilated to home.
- 39:59Speaker 1: Yeah. Sure, Oh that's that's such a cool experience. So
- 40:03Speaker 1: I'd love to go to Cappadocia. That'd be awesome. And
- 40:06Speaker 1: a special thanks to this week's supporting sponsor ARB. The
- 40:10Speaker 1: latest episode of AARB Experiences stars land cruiser aficionado and
- 40:15Speaker 1: my good friend Kurt Williams. The Baja one thousand competitor
- 40:18Speaker 1: has been a few places and seen a few things.
- 40:20Speaker 1: His travels span Siberia, Greenland, and the Americas all the
- 40:24Speaker 1: way down to Ushwaya, as well as several crossings of Australia.
- 40:28Speaker 1: Kurt says of his adventures, anything can happen out there.
- 40:31Speaker 1: Just one part not doing its job can ruin a
- 40:33Speaker 1: whole trip. Investments in quality components payback exponentially. You can
- 40:37Speaker 1: watch Kurt's full story at arbusa dot com. And then
- 40:42Speaker 1: there's another kind of vehicle that you have a particular
- 40:45Speaker 1: love for, and that's that Gen one Tundra. You are
- 40:48Speaker 1: definitely a fan of those things.
- 40:50Speaker 3: I think it's the most underrated truck to I think.
- 40:52Speaker 2: I think you're right.
- 40:54Speaker 1: I think it's almost like you don't want to ruin
- 40:56Speaker 1: it by getting the word out there that they're still
- 40:59Speaker 1: one of the best. It has the four to seven
- 41:01Speaker 1: V eight, which is one of the most reliable motors
- 41:04Speaker 1: Toyota ever brought the United States, and it's got plenty
- 41:07Speaker 1: of power, and it's not as big as a full
- 41:10Speaker 1: size truck, but it's also not as compact as a Tacoma.
- 41:13Speaker 3: You know it is, you know, the Gen three Tacomas.
- 41:16Speaker 3: The Gen one Tundra is a bye I think somewhere
- 41:19Speaker 3: in the range of an inch wider and an inch
- 41:22Speaker 3: longer than the Tacoma. Now, yeah, okay, but you've got
- 41:26Speaker 3: a V eight in it. And wait, this one that
- 41:29Speaker 3: we have, we call it Sleepy.
- 41:30Speaker 4: And that's the one that's supercharged. Yeah, we put a
- 41:33Speaker 4: supercharge so Sleepy Kurt Williams, sorry, good friend. He had,
- 41:38Speaker 4: as far as we know, the last inbox on the
- 41:40Speaker 4: shelf TRD supercharger in the United States, and we put
- 41:44Speaker 4: it on this truck. And another friend of mine installed it,
- 41:47Speaker 4: who was the master tech instructor.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Will Carroll put oh yeah, well, yeah, he does amazing.
- 41:51Speaker 3: Work, genius, you know, with a inch. So he put
- 41:54Speaker 3: it on there, so I knew it was all done right,
- 41:56Speaker 3: you know, and that that thing moves now has the
- 42:00Speaker 3: same horse and torque as my Gen three Tundra, but
- 42:03Speaker 3: it's the size of a Tacoma and we put airbags
- 42:05Speaker 3: on it, so I call it my three quarter ton
- 42:07Speaker 3: V eight Tacoma. Yeah, sure, right, But it has the
- 42:10Speaker 3: ability to hold the weight more properly than the Tacoma's do,
- 42:13Speaker 3: and it has the power to handle all that stuff.
- 42:15Speaker 3: And yeah, I think it's it's the most underrated truck
- 42:17Speaker 3: there is.
- 42:18Speaker 4: I think there was a period in time when almost
- 42:20Speaker 4: every mechanic that I knew drove a first gen Tundra
- 42:23Speaker 4: because they didn't want to have to work on anything.
- 42:26Speaker 2: That's so true. Yeah, mechanics don't want like literally, look.
- 42:29Speaker 4: Look in the back car dealer or whatever. You're going
- 42:32Speaker 4: to see mechanics driving first gen Tundras. They just the
- 42:34Speaker 4: only thing that wears out is the paint.
- 42:37Speaker 2: True. No, they do seem to all be using their thing.
- 42:39Speaker 4: That was when they kind of were just switching to
- 42:41Speaker 4: water based paints area, like late nineties, early two thousands.
- 42:46Speaker 3: Right in that range, they were starting to do some
- 42:48Speaker 3: odd ball paint stuff. But yeah, we love that truck.
- 42:51Speaker 3: We love that truck. Everybody fights to drive it.
- 42:54Speaker 1: That's awesome. And then what are some of the other
- 42:56Speaker 1: projects you've got going right now.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Well, I've got a an FJ forty that I've had
- 43:02Speaker 3: for twenty plus years, and we started using that for
- 43:04Speaker 3: display and other things. And that's one of those Unicorn
- 43:07Speaker 3: vehicles that I was telling you about. I've had that
- 43:09Speaker 3: the longest. It's got a five to seven Vortech in it,
- 43:12Speaker 3: thirty sevens and blah blah blah. It's a lot of fun.
- 43:14Speaker 3: That's my summer summer driver, you know, the midlife crisis,
- 43:17Speaker 3: a little red convertible. Yeah, twenty years ago. But the
- 43:21Speaker 3: one we're building right now is a nineteen eighty three
- 43:25Speaker 3: FJA sixty fun and it's a really clean, really clean truck.
- 43:30Speaker 2: But where did you Where did you find that one?
- 43:32Speaker 3: At a friend of mine in Salt Lake City was
- 43:34Speaker 3: selling it. He found it. It was a Texas truck.
- 43:37Speaker 3: And it'll make obvious sense in a second. The Texas
- 43:39Speaker 3: truck that a gentleman bought for his wife. She wanted
- 43:42Speaker 3: a land cruiser. She drove it once and they parked
- 43:44Speaker 3: it for five years. And so he picked it up
- 43:46Speaker 3: and you know, shined it up a little bit and
- 43:48Speaker 3: did a couple of things, and then I took on
- 43:49Speaker 3: the project from there, because I've always loved the sixties.
- 43:53Speaker 3: But the drive train in it's the unique thing. It
- 43:55Speaker 3: has a Ford three point fifty one windsor race engine
- 43:59Speaker 3: in it, Whoa with a Dana transfer transmission and transfer
- 44:04Speaker 3: case four hundred horse v eight in the sixty series,
- 44:08Speaker 3: and it looks stock. I mean from the outside you
- 44:11Speaker 3: look at it.
- 44:11Speaker 2: Just sounds terrible, sounds terrifying. It sounds like it sounds
- 44:15Speaker 2: like that's.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Like a really quick way to end up dead because
- 44:19Speaker 1: that car does not stop or turn either.
- 44:22Speaker 3: It's fine, it's not going to go out and I'm
- 44:23Speaker 3: not in a drag racing but it's fun there you
- 44:25Speaker 3: are maybe a little just a little bit, not like
- 44:29Speaker 3: the two hundred. We're not going to go lightning fast
- 44:31Speaker 3: on the on this one, but it's fun. You get it,
- 44:33Speaker 3: you loaded up, and you pull up to somebody in
- 44:35Speaker 3: there in their Mustang, you know, and they're like, right,
- 44:38Speaker 3: you hit there right next to you.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Look at you, like what the hell?
- 44:45Speaker 3: It's fun. So we've been keeping it pretty stock. We
- 44:48Speaker 3: added a few few odds and bits to make sounds
- 44:50Speaker 3: totally stock, totally stock, not right, just don't look under
- 44:55Speaker 3: the hood. That's kind of a fun.
- 44:57Speaker 4: The worst thing about the sixty is the engine. I mean,
- 44:59Speaker 4: like I'm I'm not saying that it's not reliable, and
- 45:01Speaker 4: it's super Yeah, run forever like an incredible tractor station.
- 45:05Speaker 4: But it's an incredible tractor engine. It's FJ forty with
- 45:08Speaker 4: a really nice body.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Yeah they're slow, they're slow. But that was my first
- 45:13Speaker 2: land cruiser was a nineteen eighty three f J sixty.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Really mm hmm fun. That was my first land cruiser.
- 45:19Speaker 1: I didn't own it for very long because it was
- 45:21Speaker 1: just me driving, and I'm like, why do I need
- 45:23Speaker 1: such a big car? So I found a guy up
- 45:24Speaker 1: in Flagstaff that had a growing family and an FJ forty,
- 45:28Speaker 1: and by some like providence, like we were talking about earlier,
- 45:31Speaker 1: he needed a sixty and I wanted a forty. And
- 45:34Speaker 1: we met up in Lake Pleasant and we drove each
- 45:37Speaker 1: other's car, and we signed each other's titles over and
- 45:39Speaker 1: we both went home in the other vehicle. It was
- 45:41Speaker 1: the craziest exchange I've ever had in my life. There
- 45:44Speaker 1: was no money exchange. It were worth basically the same
- 45:46Speaker 1: amount of money, and he got a super clean Grandpa
- 45:50Speaker 1: driven nineteen eighty three sixty and I got.
- 45:53Speaker 2: A FJ forty.
- 45:54Speaker 3: So both good vehicles.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Yeah, great vehicles.
- 45:56Speaker 3: Those are going to stick with me for a long time.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Yeah that's cool, and no reason to change that. On
- 46:01Speaker 2: the sixties.
- 46:02Speaker 4: Look, they do look great.
- 46:03Speaker 3: It's like classic.
- 46:04Speaker 4: I haven't had a two hundred and I haven't had
- 46:06Speaker 4: a sixty. Those are the only like two land.
- 46:08Speaker 2: Cruisers I haven't Oh you had one hundred, oh.
- 46:10Speaker 4: And I haven't had a hundred. Okay, so this is
- 46:12Speaker 4: all just crap. I was thinking that it was like,
- 46:14Speaker 4: you need to pick it.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Well.
- 46:15Speaker 4: First I started saying, now it's the only one that
- 46:17Speaker 4: I haven't had, And then I'm like the.
- 46:18Speaker 3: Guy that cars like toilet paper and you haven't had those?
- 46:23Speaker 3: What's up with it?
- 46:24Speaker 4: I don't know. I should fix it, I think. So
- 46:26Speaker 4: I got to wait for those containers because.
- 46:28Speaker 2: You had a you had you had an eighty. I
- 46:30Speaker 2: know exactly. You had an eighty very early in life.
- 46:33Speaker 4: I traded I traded a uh land Rover Discovery for it. Oh,
- 46:38Speaker 4: it was like my first car and uh at that
- 46:40Speaker 4: time I couldn't afford to fix the rusty exhaust on
- 46:43Speaker 4: the eighty series and uh I remember driving it to
- 46:47Speaker 4: all of America and the breaks just lines just burst
- 46:50Speaker 4: on the highway, and I'm like, what the hell do
- 46:52Speaker 4: I do?
- 46:54Speaker 2: What did you do?
- 46:55Speaker 4: Uh? Crimped them off, reblet them and went them all
- 46:58Speaker 4: of America. I didn't need rear breaks.
- 47:03Speaker 2: Yeah, totally overrated, completely.
- 47:04Speaker 1: I mean, I don't even know if you can notice
- 47:06Speaker 1: the difference of an eighty series has where breaks or not.
- 47:09Speaker 2: I don't really, they don't. They don't stop. I love eighties,
- 47:13Speaker 2: They're amazing. I just did.
- 47:14Speaker 1: The breaks is just something that I tend to take
- 47:16Speaker 1: issue with.
- 47:17Speaker 4: Closed the chapter on the eighty series.
- 47:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right.
- 47:20Speaker 4: But it was a nice chap, awesome truck.
- 47:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yours was amazing. Yeah, Yeah, that was a very
- 47:25Speaker 1: cool project, Matt, for sure. One of the things we
- 47:27Speaker 1: also like to ask Paul is books that you have
- 47:30Speaker 1: come to love or maybe books that you've given to
- 47:34Speaker 1: others many times, because it's made such a difference for you,
- 47:37Speaker 1: and it can be anything at all, Like what are
- 47:39Speaker 1: some of your favorite reads?
- 47:40Speaker 2: Is Paul may I've been dreading this question.
- 47:42Speaker 4: Okay, is it mad Magazine? That's how I would answer it.
- 47:46Speaker 2: It's pretty close.
- 47:47Speaker 3: Yeah, in a different vein though, Yeah, and in high
- 47:50Speaker 3: school I tried to be deep. I thought I was
- 47:52Speaker 3: going to be philosophical and you know, like Albert Camu
- 47:56Speaker 3: and Heart of Darkness, you know, the whole apocalypse now
- 48:00Speaker 3: kind of like. But what I liked about that that
- 48:02Speaker 3: was is somebody that went far deep into Africa and
- 48:06Speaker 3: found himself, but that what he found was a godlike
- 48:10Speaker 3: person taking over everything in its surroundings. Sure, very interesting.
- 48:14Speaker 2: Deep.
- 48:15Speaker 3: I'm not a deep guy. I found that out after
- 48:17Speaker 3: after reading some of that stuff. I was like, yeah,
- 48:19Speaker 3: I know.
- 48:19Speaker 4: That that's your favorite.
- 48:22Speaker 3: I'm going to stay on the books for a sec.
- 48:24Speaker 3: Then we can talk about your some of the things
- 48:26Speaker 3: uh crack hours put out, Oh yeah, into the deep
- 48:30Speaker 3: or into the thin, into thin air and into the
- 48:32Speaker 3: wild ye both analogous do our lives here as far
- 48:37Speaker 3: as too much crowding in one area can be catastrophic
- 48:40Speaker 3: if you're not taking care of things correctly, or if
- 48:42Speaker 3: you go too far in the deep by yourself and
- 48:44Speaker 3: things can happen out of your control sometimes.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Yeah, he's just such a not only a wordsmith, but
- 48:49Speaker 1: the research that he does to paint a picture of
- 48:52Speaker 1: something that in both cases were tragic, very tragic situations.
- 48:56Speaker 3: But it makes you think more. Yeah, preparation and making
- 48:59Speaker 3: sure sure that what you do is is going to
- 49:01Speaker 3: be Okay, I love those things. This is going to
- 49:03Speaker 3: sound really weird. Maybe not. I really like I'm a
- 49:05Speaker 3: Jimmy Buffett fan. Okay, okay. He wrote a book called
- 49:08Speaker 3: a Pirate looks at fifty, which is a play on
- 49:11Speaker 3: a song of his. It's called Pirate looks at forty
- 49:13Speaker 3: and it was a story in an autobiographical way, and
- 49:17Speaker 3: it talks about him and where he started and what
- 49:19Speaker 3: he did. And so I almost kind of like emulate
- 49:22Speaker 3: that guy. I think he does an awesome job. He
- 49:25Speaker 3: runs an incredible billion dollar enterprise in bare feet. Yeah right.
- 49:31Speaker 3: And Mario, our friend Mario has a great analogy of it.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Is like a duck.
- 49:37Speaker 3: You see a duck on the water and it looks
- 49:39Speaker 3: like it's just cruising in heaven, you know, just ease,
- 49:42Speaker 3: handling life with ease. But you get down under the
- 49:44Speaker 3: water in those little little ways. You're doing this the
- 49:47Speaker 3: whole time. You're doing this constantly. But if you look
- 49:50Speaker 3: at Jimmy Buffett on the outside, you think this guy
- 49:52Speaker 3: is just this laid back, hangout Hawaiian.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Shirt shorts, barefoot.
- 49:56Speaker 4: But he has a billion dollar empire of five hundred
- 49:58Speaker 4: dollars margarita machines.
- 50:00Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, and flies a seaplane. And does you had
- 50:03Speaker 3: a sportsmobile? Yeah?
- 50:04Speaker 2: Yeah, he did a.
- 50:05Speaker 3: Sportsmobile out on his stuff back on the Eastern coast.
- 50:09Speaker 3: And he's been all over the planet and he goes
- 50:11Speaker 3: and explores tropical places and exotic places in Africa and
- 50:15Speaker 3: all over the place. He's been everywhere. But he does
- 50:17Speaker 3: it his way. Yeah, and his way doesn't have shoes,
- 50:20Speaker 3: And I can understand that completely.
- 50:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:22Speaker 1: I think I've seen you wear shoes a few times.
- 50:26Speaker 1: I mean I think maybe because we had to hike
- 50:28Speaker 1: somewhere or whatever it's required. Maybeeah exactly, but yeah, but
- 50:34Speaker 1: I think, yeah, yeah, maybe if you went to Antarctica,
- 50:37Speaker 1: you would put shoes on.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Maybe maybe some socks, some socks.
- 50:41Speaker 3: So I mean, do I hand out books and that
- 50:44Speaker 3: guy that does races reading?
- 50:45Speaker 4: No.
- 50:46Speaker 3: I went to school. I went to grad school, and
- 50:48Speaker 3: I gradually learned I didn't want to read any books anymore.
- 50:50Speaker 2: I'd do enough of that.
- 50:52Speaker 3: So I listened to stuff, you know, the military mystery
- 50:55Speaker 3: thriller kind of stuff, and it gets me across the
- 50:57Speaker 3: thousand mile days.
- 50:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:59Speaker 3: Cool, So it's it's brain dead stuff.
- 51:01Speaker 1: No, just always find it fascinating what what people what
- 51:05Speaker 1: they identify with in that way?
- 51:07Speaker 4: Right?
- 51:07Speaker 3: So yeah, a couple lot of autobiographies. Autobiographies, Yeah I
- 51:12Speaker 3: said it right, you did Barack Obamas. Oh, I promised
- 51:16Speaker 3: land I thought I haven't read that. Yeah great, I
- 51:19Speaker 3: mean it's a pioneer in a different way. Yeah, sure,
- 51:22Speaker 3: he had a lot of upward struggles.
- 51:24Speaker 2: Sure.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Uh.
- 51:25Speaker 3: The other one that might sound kind of oddball is
- 51:28Speaker 3: Matthew mcconaway.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Oh I've heard that. That's excuse me, I've heard It's great.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Yeah it is.
- 51:34Speaker 3: It's his life has been venturing its own right, And
- 51:37Speaker 3: he was a nomad. He bought a vehicle, and he
- 51:40Speaker 3: bought an old airstream and he wandered the United States
- 51:42Speaker 3: for a couple of years. Interest Once in a while
- 51:45Speaker 3: he'd go back and make a film, and then he'd
- 51:46Speaker 3: get back in the truck with his garg and off
- 51:48Speaker 3: he goes again. Yeah, wandered the whole country.
- 51:51Speaker 1: Sounds perfect, sounds like it sounds like you in about
- 51:54Speaker 1: three weeks pretty about to pick up your first airstream.
- 51:58Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, it's super excited about this.
- 52:00Speaker 4: You can get you Margaritaville, Margarita Blunder in the airstream, and.
- 52:04Speaker 2: You've got your dog and you can go wander around.
- 52:07Speaker 3: The country, around the country.
- 52:08Speaker 2: You can draw, You're going to be Matthew McConaughey, pretend that.
- 52:12Speaker 3: You're in a Lincoln Commerci not as good looking. Okay
- 52:14Speaker 3: for one, that's all up the interpretation to you.
- 52:16Speaker 4: It depends which movie he's in.
- 52:19Speaker 3: True, he can look terrible if he wants to. No,
- 52:22Speaker 3: but I found it very humorous. It's not been an
- 52:25Speaker 3: easy life for him. Some of it has, some of
- 52:28Speaker 3: it's not been. But I took a lot away on
- 52:30Speaker 3: being yourself, being true to what you want to be.
- 52:33Speaker 3: Find your goal, Yeah, live it. You find a way
- 52:36Speaker 3: of making that happen for yourself. And then that's what
- 52:38Speaker 3: he's done. He's done a good job of doing that
- 52:39Speaker 3: for himself.
- 52:40Speaker 2: So that's a great suggestion. Cool.
- 52:41Speaker 3: It's a it's a cool book.
- 52:43Speaker 2: Okay.
- 52:43Speaker 1: So now we got to ask you about your favorite beer,
- 52:45Speaker 1: because I remember in your historic home that you had
- 52:48Speaker 1: downtown Salt Lake, you had a beer fridge. Its only
- 52:52Speaker 1: job was to maintain the ideal temperature of I think
- 52:55Speaker 1: a red stripe and there was something else in there.
- 52:57Speaker 3: Frosty barley bops of all nature at fridge, and it
- 53:01Speaker 3: was a full sized fridge we had added in the garage,
- 53:03Speaker 3: and I at any given time I would have a
- 53:06Speaker 3: variety of somewhere between twenty five and thirty different beers
- 53:09Speaker 3: from all over the world stuffed in that fridge. The
- 53:12Speaker 3: new house has a beer fridge. It's just slightly smaller
- 53:14Speaker 3: version of the original. So favorite favorite beers I go
- 53:18Speaker 3: to right now is a full sale amber. Okay, next
- 53:21Speaker 3: getting into the ambers. More the IPAs, no interest whatsoever?
- 53:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I mail frappuccinos something like that. Yeah, anything that
- 53:29Speaker 4: makes you know, these things right here in your neck,
- 53:32Speaker 4: anything that makes a little clinch you shouldn't drink and
- 53:34Speaker 4: then you get cotton mouth afterwards when you have like
- 53:37Speaker 4: an IPA.
- 53:37Speaker 2: Like O interesting. Yeah, that's why I guess I've never
- 53:40Speaker 2: even tried one.
- 53:41Speaker 4: The IPA things interesting right, because it was like, here
- 53:45Speaker 4: have this beer that tastes like dandelions, And somebody was like, oh,
- 53:48Speaker 4: I really liked this, totally lying, and then his friend
- 53:51Speaker 4: next to him was like, oh, yeah, I like that too,
- 53:54Speaker 4: And then it became like a thing thing. It became
- 53:57Speaker 4: like a I'm not going to admit that I don't
- 53:59Speaker 4: like this at least that's that's my opinion, is from
- 54:03Speaker 4: the perhaps blue ribbon drinker.
- 54:04Speaker 3: Yeah, well maybe it maybe it's an acquired taste.
- 54:07Speaker 2: I could be.
- 54:08Speaker 3: I'm really hoping that's the case that I have not
- 54:11Speaker 3: acquired that, And I'm fine with this A great way
- 54:15Speaker 3: to it's a great one. Or pails or something in
- 54:17Speaker 3: that ibu under thirty, I'm good with that. It's just
- 54:20Speaker 3: just fine with me. So, yeah, I got hooked on
- 54:24Speaker 3: red stripes for a while. It was I remember that
- 54:26Speaker 3: very dangerous sport. Utah is known for some very interesting
- 54:31Speaker 3: liquor laws, and so I knew exactly every entrance to
- 54:35Speaker 3: the state of Utah on where to pick up the
- 54:38Speaker 3: stash on the way back in.
- 54:39Speaker 2: I got you. I got you.
- 54:41Speaker 3: One time, coming back from from Nevada, we stopped by
- 54:44Speaker 3: liquor store and Mesquite and I with the Chaser trailer
- 54:47Speaker 3: and I brought back it was like ten or twelve
- 54:49Speaker 3: cases of red stripe in the trailer, legging red stripe.
- 54:54Speaker 1: And now I know why you bought a Chaser trailer.
- 54:56Speaker 1: It was your bootlegs because I could I could adjust
- 54:58Speaker 1: the air pressure on.
- 55:00Speaker 2: No one whatever. No, it wasn't sagging or anything like that.
- 55:03Speaker 3: It worked out great. So for a long time. Now
- 55:05Speaker 3: you just got a little bit better on their whole process,
- 55:07Speaker 3: and so it's not as bad.
- 55:09Speaker 4: Utah actually has some fantastic micro brews. They were kind
- 55:12Speaker 4: of ahead of a lot of the rest of the
- 55:13Speaker 4: country because of their laws, if I remember that correctly.
- 55:16Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, they've done some incredible things to make beers
- 55:19Speaker 3: with not much alcohol in.
- 55:20Speaker 2: Them taste really good.
- 55:22Speaker 3: I actually like that idea.
- 55:24Speaker 4: Yeah, we got like a full bodied beer that was
- 55:27Speaker 4: only you know, three percent or so.
- 55:29Speaker 2: You can just drink a lot more of them.
- 55:32Speaker 4: I don't know if you're a fan of Pacifico Light,
- 55:35Speaker 4: but that is my Baja beer of choice. That's because
- 55:37Speaker 4: I can. It's a maintenance beer. I can sit down
- 55:40Speaker 4: with like a rack of it, and then at the
- 55:42Speaker 4: end I'm like, I'm rehydrated.
- 55:46Speaker 2: I feel slightly bloated, but totally hydrated.
- 55:49Speaker 1: Yeah, and not drunk at all those all day long.
- 55:54Speaker 1: What's next for you, Paul? Where would you like to
- 55:56Speaker 1: travel next? You've you've got this airstream that you're picking up.
- 55:59Speaker 1: What's your with your goals for travel over the next
- 56:01Speaker 1: couple of years.
- 56:03Speaker 3: With that in particular, we're going to do a lot
- 56:05Speaker 3: of Americana. I'm really looking forward to. I'm kind of
- 56:08Speaker 3: going the other way as far as as people are
- 56:10Speaker 3: like getting like, I got to get away from all
- 56:11Speaker 3: the people and I got to like, I'm going to
- 56:13Speaker 3: go and see some things that that are not in
- 56:15Speaker 3: the way out. So yeah, we're gonna We're gonna go
- 56:19Speaker 3: do the Smoky Mountains and we're doing a craft Bourbon
- 56:22Speaker 3: tour for a week and uh and seeing some of
- 56:25Speaker 3: the countryside and going up in South Dakota and seeing
- 56:28Speaker 3: in some of the Americana stuff there. I'm amazing to
- 56:31Speaker 3: cross coast to coast Canada. I think it would be
- 56:34Speaker 3: a lot of.
- 56:34Speaker 4: Fun that great trans Canada Highway.
- 56:37Speaker 3: Yeah, yea, do the full thing.
- 56:39Speaker 2: Uh.
- 56:39Speaker 3: And my wife and I are fortunate enough now that
- 56:41Speaker 3: where we are in our position so we can work
- 56:43Speaker 3: remote for the most part, and so we're going to
- 56:45Speaker 3: go and try that. We're even looking at staying for
- 56:48Speaker 3: a while a few months at a time promote if
- 56:50Speaker 3: we can work it out. There's still some bugs to
- 56:52Speaker 3: work out of that, but more of the Americana stuff
- 56:55Speaker 3: and vehicles that were hauling this trailer around with our
- 56:58Speaker 3: standalone and they're out their own right. So if we find,
- 57:01Speaker 3: you know, get a bug upper nose and we want
- 57:02Speaker 3: to go, hey, let's go over there for a couple
- 57:05Speaker 3: of days and climb this impress a really hard technical thing,
- 57:08Speaker 3: all right, just unhook the unhooked the trailer.
- 57:11Speaker 4: And the cool thing with the trailer is you can
- 57:13Speaker 4: really just leave it.
- 57:14Speaker 2: Yeah that makes sense.
- 57:15Speaker 3: Yeah, So like the trailer trailer that we chose is
- 57:18Speaker 3: light enough that we can haul it around with the
- 57:20Speaker 3: two hundred, and we've got everything on that two hundred
- 57:23Speaker 3: that we can live on its own, right. Sure, So
- 57:26Speaker 3: it's like the base ship and the Satellite X fighter cruiser,
- 57:28Speaker 3: we can head out and do our thing. Or the
- 57:30Speaker 3: Millennium Falcon. Yeah, as we talked about, just get away
- 57:33Speaker 3: and we could go and do the really nasty stuff
- 57:36Speaker 3: if we wanted to, not have a problem. So looking
- 57:38Speaker 3: forward to that adventure.
- 57:40Speaker 1: So as we get close to the end here, I
- 57:42Speaker 1: think that you should talk about why your land cruiser
- 57:44Speaker 1: is called the Millennium Falcon.
- 57:45Speaker 2: I thought that was really great. So you have one
- 57:47Speaker 2: you have one sticker on the vehicle.
- 57:49Speaker 3: One little white cut out and it's of a Millennium Falcon.
- 57:52Speaker 3: What I like in it too, is that it's a
- 57:55Speaker 3: large cargo vessel that's white with black highlights on it,
- 58:00Speaker 3: and it's capable of going like a bat out of hell.
- 58:04Speaker 3: That's exactly what that six.
- 58:05Speaker 2: I've seen you drive Baha on six parces.
- 58:08Speaker 4: Pretty dang well. Not as fast as some of my friends,
- 58:12Speaker 4: but I'm keeping up with them better better.
- 58:14Speaker 3: Yeah it is. It's it's our little Millennium Falcon and
- 58:17Speaker 3: job just right.
- 58:19Speaker 1: I do remember when you came out to Prescott and
- 58:22Speaker 1: you wanted to start doing some higher speed driving and
- 58:25Speaker 1: you and I spent about an hour perfecting your Scandinavian
- 58:29Speaker 1: flick in a one hundred series.
- 58:31Speaker 2: That was really fun. That was a good day.
- 58:33Speaker 3: That was an awesome day. My wife gave me a
- 58:35Speaker 3: birthday present of Scott Brady training one on one. This
- 58:38Speaker 3: is early, early on.
- 58:39Speaker 2: Yeah, this is when I actually did training way back.
- 58:41Speaker 3: Then, right back there, but even before the overland training thing.
- 58:44Speaker 3: And I wanted to learn to drift and it's not
- 58:46Speaker 3: easy to drift a fully kitted one hundred series all
- 58:49Speaker 3: wheel drive track, but.
- 58:50Speaker 2: We got it, oh we did. Yeah.
- 58:52Speaker 3: We also proceeded to break an entire case of red
- 58:55Speaker 3: stripe in my fridge on one of those who are
- 58:57Speaker 3: trying to teach me how to do speed bumps, and
- 59:00Speaker 3: we endowed into one up. Yeah, I had I spent
- 59:03Speaker 3: three hours cleaning the fridge out of glass and about
- 59:06Speaker 3: two gallons of red stripe after that. Just sad day,
- 59:11Speaker 3: but I got over it. But one of the coolest highlights.
- 59:14Speaker 1: I totally I totally remember that. I mean we we
- 59:18Speaker 1: perfected it with heavy trail breaking, so it was just
- 59:21Speaker 1: like the last second of a turn monster breake application,
- 59:27Speaker 1: so left foot breaking trail breaking, and the rear end
- 59:30Speaker 1: would lighten just enough and it would start to rotate
- 59:32Speaker 1: and then I'm like, Paul, full gas and even roll
- 59:34Speaker 1: into full gas and it would just it would pitch
- 59:36Speaker 1: around the whole corner.
- 59:37Speaker 2: It was beautiful.
- 59:38Speaker 3: And then right after we got that done, he goes
- 59:39Speaker 3: stop stop, stop, stop, stop, and I'm like, hit the brakes,
- 59:41Speaker 3: what what what?
- 59:42Speaker 2: And he goes, that was so awesome.
