- 0:05She's a happy girl. Hello, friends, and welcome back to another podcast of Woman.
- 0:10At the Well Ministries, where we believe that all of us have to come to Jesus
- 0:15like the woman at the well in John chapter 4.
- 0:18Our highest priority is making God real in your life.
- 0:21Whether you are listening in our app, in your favorite podcasting app,
- 0:25or on our website at watwm.org, we invite you to sit down with us as we look
- 0:31to the scriptures to learn more about God and to strengthen your daily walk with Jesus Christ.
- 1:03Join us in this broadcast of Women at the Well Ministries, as Kim continues in her series on prayer.
- 1:09In this lesson, Kim will address some of the reasons the Bible says our prayers are hindered.
- 1:14A portion of this lesson is also dedicated to the practice of thanksgiving and
- 1:19the important role that a thankful heart plays in praying prayers that produce.
- 1:26Hello, and thank you for joining us in this fourth part of our series on practicing the elements of prayer.
- 1:32And in our last lesson, we spoke about three of the five elements that we have
- 1:37chosen to highlight for this series on prayer.
- 1:41Those five elements that we've been talking about are we are to worship, surrender.
- 1:49Petition, confession, and thanksgiving are the five elements that we pulled
- 1:55out to highlight in our prayers.
- 1:57But make no mistake and be very clear on this.
- 2:01God hears your prayers if you are his child and do not regard iniquity in your
- 2:05heart and don't have sin in there, regardless of what it is.
- 2:08You don't have to be an orator to be able to speak to God. You don't have to know some set prayers.
- 2:14You don't have to know some recipe. He said in 1 Thessalonians 5,
- 2:1917 to pray without ceasing.
- 2:21He told us again in 1 Chronicles that we are to seek him continually.
- 2:25He hears the simplest of prayers as he heard Peter when he said, save me.
- 2:30And he hears the big long orations like you saw of the prayer of J.
- 2:34Biz or the prayer of the Sermon on the Mount that Jesus makes.
- 2:37He hears your prayers that come from a repentant heart, seeking God in faith, believing.
- 2:46And so when you begin to pray, just speak to God from your heart,
- 2:50knowing who he is, trusting in him and worshiping him for who he is.
- 2:56And that helps us to get ourselves into the right frame of mind.
- 3:01It helps us to really increase our faith as we begin to see who he is and worship
- 3:05him for his majesty and his power.
- 3:08Then we are to surrender, understanding our positioning with God.
- 3:12And I don't mean on your knees or face forward, however you choose to pray.
- 3:16That's between you and God. I mean that proximity position of our hierarchy,
- 3:22knowing that God is God and we are his children created in his image,
- 3:27that our works are nothing but filthy rags, that he imputes his righteousness
- 3:31to us and that he makes our black, dark sinfulness white as snow and that his
- 3:37crimson red blood flows through us.
- 3:39And when Jesus looks at us, he sees his blood.
- 3:42And when he talks to the father, he says, there's one of mine, that's my child.
- 3:47Because of his sinless work,
- 3:49on calvary because of the completed work on calvary
- 3:52where he shed his sinless blood for each of us
- 3:55and that he was buried and on the third day rose again and was victorious over
- 3:59hell death and the grave we have a savior who is risen who is alive who hears
- 4:04our prayers and john chapter 17 says he prays for us we're told in hebrews that
- 4:11he ever liveth to make a recession for us,
- 4:14Jesus Christ is real, and we need to realize who we are in him.
- 4:19Then we need to take him at his word, offer our petitions to him knowing that
- 4:25our help comes from him, that we can come boldly to the throne of grace and
- 4:29obtain mercy in time of need.
- 4:31What a beautiful, beautiful truth, that we can cast our cares upon him for he cares for us.
- 4:38In James chapter 5 and verse 16, he says,
- 4:41confess your faults one to another and pray
- 4:44one for another that you may be healed the effectual fervent prayer
- 4:46of a righteous man availeth much but he
- 4:49encourages us to confess our faults one to
- 4:52another we're going to speak about confession in this portion of our lesson
- 4:57and he says in psalms 32 5 that i acknowledge my sin unto thee and mine iniquity
- 5:04have i not hid i said i will confess my transgressions unto the Lord and thou
- 5:09forgave us the iniquity of my sin.
- 5:12In Psalms chapter 66 and verse 18, he says, if I regard iniquity in my heart,
- 5:18the Lord will not hear me.
- 5:20It's a common misconception out there that God hears every prayer that everybody prays.
- 5:25The Bible tells us in James that sometimes we pray amiss.
- 5:29I know that in my own prayer life that I have prayed prayers that didn't even
- 5:32reach it to the ceiling because they were just form and fashion.
- 5:35They were just words that I were repeating. They were just blocks I was checking off.
- 5:40Sometimes I was just too tired to say anything else and I was doing something
- 5:43else and sort of just uttering some words.
- 5:45Prayer is a condition of the heart and it's the condition that says,
- 5:49Lord, I need you. Lord, I trust you. Lord, help me.
- 5:53Lord, I come to you because your grace is sufficient. I come to you because you are God.
- 5:57I come to you because you are the great I am. i come to you because you are
- 6:01the beginning and the end i come to you because you invite me and i love you
- 6:06and i know you love me and i know who you are and your righteousness flows through me,
- 6:10you see it's an interesting thing that we think that we can go to god and ask
- 6:14him for anything regardless of whatever yet.
- 6:18In our earthly relationships, as a child and a parent, we would never go to
- 6:23our earthly father and ask him for something big if we were not in good standing with him.
- 6:29If you'd just been grounded, you didn't ask him for something new or something that you wanted.
- 6:34If you were getting ready to ask him for something that you thought might be
- 6:37difficult for him to say yes to, where a very common practice was to sort of butter him up.
- 6:42You crawl up in his lap and you tell him how much you love him and you hang
- 6:46out with him and you you know get his shoes for him and you get him something
- 6:49to drink in the evening and you hang out with him a little bit and then you spring the news on him,
- 6:54but yet that worked for some of
- 6:57us probably others it may not have
- 7:00but that stuff never works with jesus christ because
- 7:03you see you can't fool him he knows whether
- 7:06he has a relationship with you or not and you know whether you have
- 7:09a relationship with him or not because the bible says he said
- 7:12i write these things into you little children that you may know and
- 7:16he says that we can know him and from genesis to revelations we have a beautiful
- 7:20picture of who he is the old testament prophesizes who he is the new testament
- 7:24is the fulfillment of those prophecies and the new testament gives us the life
- 7:27for jesus and since jesus and the god are one and the same and the holy spirit
- 7:32all three in one then we can fully know god because we can fully know jesus.
- 7:37And you're not going to fool him anyway. And if you don't have a relationship
- 7:41with him, it's a little late to try praying about such and thus.
- 7:46But the prayer that he did promise to hear from all of us was the prayer of repentance.
- 7:51He said in Romans 10, 13, that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- 7:56In Acts, the Philippian jellers says to Paul and Silas, what must I do to be saved?
- 8:03And they said, believe on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be
- 8:06saved. And then they add it in the house.
- 8:08You can't get saved for someone else, but your life certainly can introduce someone else to Jesus.
- 8:13And when they see the change that is wrought in you by the new birth,
- 8:16because old things are passed away and all things are become new,
- 8:19there is a difference in your life that they'll want.
- 8:22There's a joy in your life that will attract them. There's a light that they
- 8:25will flock to like a moth to light at night.
- 8:28There's a peace that they've been seeking that you have, that they're going
- 8:32to want with all they have.
- 8:34And you'll be able to show them that. and you'll be able to introduce them because
- 8:36the Bible says in Matthew chapter 5 that ye are the light of the world and that
- 8:41you don't hide that light under a bushel but you put it out for all the house to see.
- 8:45That your works may glorify your Father which is in heaven.
- 8:48We need to confess our sins because the Lord's not going to hear our prayers,
- 8:54if we regard sin in our hearts.
- 8:56And if we're serving Satan, he certainly is not going to bless us by answering our prayers.
- 9:02We can see that in our earthly situations. it seems
- 9:05that we should be able to see that in a spiritual condition and
- 9:08i hope that you're looking at that he said that if you were lukewarm he would
- 9:12spew you from your mouth you can't serve mammon and god in other words you can't
- 9:16have two masters and he explains to us in no uncertain terms and i'm praying
- 9:21to god that he gives me the liberty to teach a lesson on romans chapter 6 that
- 9:25says sin has no more dominion over you.
- 9:28Yet, we walk around and you can't tell us from the world. And he said, be a peculiar person.
- 9:34You should be very different than the person around you who doesn't know Jesus.
- 9:38The Holy Spirit dwells inside of you and it teaches you all things that you
- 9:41need to know. It guides you. It leads you.
- 9:43It's your absolute connection at all times to the living God.
- 9:48How could you not be different than somebody who doesn't have that inside of them?
- 9:52You need to take a close look and make sure you got there where the spout,
- 9:56where the glory come out. because if there's no difference in you,
- 9:59my friend, I'm not a judge, but I can inspect fruit and an orange tree is never
- 10:04going to produce lemons.
- 10:06And a child of God is not going to have continual works of the devil.
- 10:10You see, he chastises whom he loves. The Bible says in 1 John 1,
- 10:149, that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
- 10:17and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 10:19And as Christians, we make mistakes. As Christians, we fall,
- 10:23but we're not utterly cast down and we're never in despair because Jesus Christ
- 10:28is our hope, the hope of all glory.
- 10:29And he said that he would forgive us our sins and that Holy Spirit inside of us convicts us.
- 10:33And we just can't get far from the straight and narrow because he tugs at us
- 10:38and he pulls us. And let me tell you what, my rope that he has on me is extremely
- 10:41short. And I praise his holy name for that because I get myself hooked up and all messed up.
- 10:47But he doesn't let me slip and slide because I am on the solid rock on Jesus Christ as whom I stand.
- 10:53And you see, my grip might be loose, but his is sure.
- 10:59And I don't have to worry about my salvation because I have a relationship with
- 11:02him. And I love him and he loves me and I've received him as Savior.
- 11:05And I'm going to live with him for all eternity. but that
- 11:08same salvation that same grace that
- 11:11has saved my soul that same imputed righteousness is the same one that wants
- 11:15me to work for him that wants me that i want to go out and i want to just love
- 11:19all over him and i can do that but love it all over somebody else i want to
- 11:23stand for him because my friend if you won't stand for something you'll fall
- 11:26for anything and i want to stand he says when you've done all else just stand kim.
- 11:32See, that's the problem. We want to talk to Jesus when we're not.
- 11:37We want to talk to Jesus when it's convenient. And we want to be associated
- 11:41with Jesus when it's the popular thing.
- 11:43But you see, some of us, when we're out with our buddies who don't claim to
- 11:47be Christians, well, we just act like they are.
- 11:50And everybody who sees us wouldn't know one from the other.
- 11:53That ought not be, my friend. And he says, if you regard iniquity in my heart,
- 11:57the Lord will not hear me.
- 11:59That's Psalm 66, 18. and you might want to mark that on your heart.
- 12:03In Isaiah 59 too, he says, but your iniquities have separated between you and
- 12:09your God and your sins have hid his face from you that he will not hear.
- 12:16There is nothing that will separate you from the love of God.
- 12:18He tells us that very plainly in Romans chapter eight.
- 12:22But my friend, there's something that will separate you from right fellowship.
- 12:28He may love you but he can't hang out with you i don't
- 12:32know if you ever had the experience growing up
- 12:35where you had friends that maybe you liked but your parents didn't think
- 12:37were the kind you should hang around and it didn't matter too much how much
- 12:40you you liked them you didn't associate with them you could bring them to church
- 12:45didn't matter who they were i was never turned down but my parents are bringing
- 12:49somebody to church they could come to where i was but absolutely under in no
- 12:54circumstance was they were going to let me go to where they were.
- 12:56And you see, Jesus came to me when I couldn't go to where he was,
- 13:02that I could be where he is. You get that?
- 13:06Jesus came to me when I couldn't go to where he was, that I might go to where he is.
- 13:14Isn't that a fabulous, fabulous truth?
- 13:18But he never let me go where someone who doesn't know who Jesus is,
- 13:23living the kind of life that is sinful and wicked.
- 13:26I used to have friends that you would go to bars and stuff, and they'd say,
- 13:29oh, I'm witnessing. Yeah, you're witnessing, all right.
- 13:32But not for Jesus. You see, a Christian needs to be holy and separated.
- 13:37And it may not be a popular thing for me to say, but you know,
- 13:40the devil has duped many Christians into believing that strong drink is okay
- 13:46as long as you don't do it in excess.
- 13:48And that strong drink is just fine because the Bible talks about it and this
- 13:53and that. But let me tell you what the Bible says.
- 13:55The Bible says that you're to submit yourselves to God and nothing else.
- 13:59And when you begin to drink even in just a little bit, you lose control of who
- 14:04you are and you lose control of your faculties.
- 14:06And my friend, I don't care whether you think you can hold it or whether you
- 14:10think you can't hold your liquor.
- 14:11The truth of the matter is, is you're giving, you're submitting to something
- 14:15other than the mighty hand of God.
- 14:16The other thing I'd like for you to see is that you're setting a standard and
- 14:20a witness that makes it very difficult for the world to see a difference in you.
- 14:25And if you have objections to those statements or something,
- 14:28feel free to write me or email me and we can discuss it further and at length.
- 14:32But this message is about confessing our sins.
- 14:34And my friends, we need to get sin out of our life and we need to call sin what
- 14:39it is. It's not an alternate lifestyle.
- 14:41It's sin. It's not a choice. It's a child.
- 14:44It's not doing something because everybody else can do it.
- 14:49Sin is sin and God does not distinguish between sins. That's something man does.
- 14:53We call them white lies. A lie is a lie to Jesus Christ.
- 14:57And anything that we do without faith it's a sin you realize how difficult that
- 15:02is when you think about it anything we do that is not done in faith is a sin
- 15:06and the lord says that we need to get the sins out of our life,
- 15:11and then he will hear our prayers you see again he said but your iniquities
- 15:17have separated between you and your god and your sins have hid his face from
- 15:21you that he will not hear you what is it in your life.
- 15:26Is worth going to hell over for those of you who have not received jesus christ
- 15:31as savior but you're going to hell and something about your life you think is
- 15:37better than the life would be if you turned your life over to jesus christ and
- 15:41received his free gift of salvation,
- 15:43what is it that you think is more important and is worth going to hell what
- 15:48lie has the devil told you that is keeping you from receiving jesus christ as
- 15:52savior and my friends those of you who know Jesus as Savior,
- 15:56what sin are you harboring in your life that is worth?
- 16:00Now listen to me, that is worth jeopardizing your fellowship with Jesus Christ. That is worth,
- 16:09standing in the way of being all you can be in Jesus Christ.
- 16:14What sin are you harboring that God has said, get rid of?
- 16:18Because he said that if we confess our sins, he's faithful and just to forgive
- 16:21us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteous, you can come to him.
- 16:25And he said, there's not a temptation that has taken man, but that he has given
- 16:28us the grace to overcome.
- 16:31You don't have to submit to that sin. You can give it to Jesus Christ and he
- 16:34can get you through it, Whether it's alcoholism, a drug addiction,
- 16:38pornography, women lying,
- 16:40cheating, not having enough faith, being anxious, worrying, whatever gluttony,
- 16:46whatever it might be that your sin is, that nobody might even know but you.
- 16:51Jesus Christ has the power to forgive you of that and to move you through it.
- 16:57And you can be an overcomer through Jesus Christ.
- 17:00The Bible says that we are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
- 17:05The final element that we want to highlight in this series on prayer is thanksgiving.
- 17:10And my friends, 2 Corinthians 2.14 says, Now thanks be unto God,
- 17:16which always causes us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savor of
- 17:22his knowledge by us in every place.
- 17:24Now thanks be unto God, who always causes us to triumph.
- 17:30Second corinthians 9 15 says thanks be unto god
- 17:33for his unspeakable gift and that
- 17:36relationship that you have with jesus christ is an unspeakable gift as we begin
- 17:42to think about worship and we begin to talk about thanksgiving and and we begin
- 17:45to look at these things i ask you to look to to the book of psalms in chapter
- 17:50100 he says make a joyful noise into the lord all you land serve the.
- 17:57Come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord, he is God.
- 18:00It is he that hath made us and not we ourselves. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
- 18:06Enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise.
- 18:10Be thankful unto him and bless his name. For the Lord is good.
- 18:14His mercy is everlasting and his truth endures to all generations. Hallelujah.
- 18:20We have much to be thankful for.
- 18:22When we come to Jesus Christ, We have the confidence in knowing that if we have
- 18:26come in faith, believing in our hearts and our lives are right with God,
- 18:31that he has heard our prayer. He will answer our prayer.
- 18:34He's working all things out for our good. He'll take our burden and he'll make it his.
- 18:38He'll give us his light burden. He'll walk with us and talk with us.
- 18:42He'll never leave us, never forsake us. How could you not be thankful?
- 18:46We should walk away as Hannah did in the first chapter of 1 Samuel when she
- 18:52prayed and she heard from the Lord and she knew her prayer was answered and
- 18:57though she hadn't eaten and though she had been grief-stricken and very sorrowful
- 19:01when she come up from her prayer,
- 19:03she was no longer sad and she began to eat.
- 19:06I've seen the time in my life when I've prayed to God and I got up just as upset
- 19:11and sad as I was when I sit down.
- 19:13Now, did I really pray? No. Did I give him my heart? No.
- 19:15Was I able to let God take my burden? No. I gave it to him and before I got
- 19:20up, I picked it right up and walked out the door with it.
- 19:22He said to cast your care off, man. You need to leave it there.
- 19:25It's a beautiful old hymn that my father used to sing. And he said, leave it there.
- 19:30Leave it there. Take your burdens to the Lord and leave it there.
- 19:34Friends, we need to be thankful that we have a God that hears and understands and he cares.
- 19:38And Hebrews chapter 4 verses 14 through 16 tells us that he was tempted like
- 19:42as we are yet without sin.
- 19:44And he invites us to come boldly to the throne of God that we may obtain mercy in time of need.
- 19:51Oh, my friends, it's a beautiful thing to trust in the Lord.
- 19:55It's a beautiful thing to know that he is God.
- 19:59It's a wonderful thing to believe in him and to know that when you peel your
- 20:04head at night, that all is well.
- 20:06In Ephesians chapter 5 and verse 20, he says, Giving thanks always for all things
- 20:12unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 20:15In Philippians 4, 6, he says, Be careful for nothing, but in everything by prayer
- 20:19and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God.
- 20:22And then verse 7 says, and the peace of God shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
- 20:28All my friends, don't worry.
- 20:32Oh, we can't put a price tag on the value of not worrying. We can't put a price
- 20:36tag in the value of being able to pillow our head at night and knowing that everything's okay.
- 20:42And we can do that with Thanksgiving because we can walk away knowing that we've
- 20:46handed it to God and it's okay.
- 20:48You know, I don't know what problem you have right now, but it's safe in the Lord's hands.
- 20:52I don't know what's bothering you right now or what's troubling you,
- 20:55but it's safe in the Lord's hands.
- 20:57You see, our faith can get tested sometimes and we can walk through the valley
- 21:01and we can think we believe in God,
- 21:03but maybe you're just a little too afraid to place that sick loved one in the
- 21:09hands of God because perhaps you're afraid the outcome won't be what you want.
- 21:12But my friend, the outcome will be exactly the right thing and the outcome will
- 21:16be what's best for that sick loved one and that outcome will be the best for
- 21:19what's best for you too because he said that all things work together for the
- 21:23good to them that love the Lord and that are called according to his purpose in Romans 8, 28.
- 21:27And friends, he told us in Romans 8, 38 that nothing could separate us from
- 21:31the love of God. Nothing, not height, nor depth, not angels, nor principalities.
- 21:34Nothing can separate us from the love of God. And he said, all things come down
- 21:38from the Father of lights. And with him, there is no turning or no variableness.
- 21:41He loves you and he's always loved you. And regardless of what the problem is
- 21:45that you're facing right now, regardless of how upset you might be,
- 21:49regardless of how it may not look anything like the way you want it to be,
- 21:52he's still God and he's still in control.
- 21:54He's a God on the mountain and he's the God in the valley.
- 21:56You've got to trust him at all times and always, and in all ways acknowledge
- 22:00him and be thankful when you land the prayer in his hands because he is worthy
- 22:04and trustworthy and he can keep your prayer,
- 22:08and he can keep that loved one and he can keep that burden that you have and
- 22:12he'll do more with that burden than you could ever do.
- 22:14You're kidding yourself when you think that you're taking care of that burden.
- 22:17You don't have what it takes. If you really believe and you really have a burden.
- 22:23Hand that burden to the Lord because that's the only place that it's safe.
- 22:27As the only place that it can be trusted.
- 22:31We begin to close this lesson, I want to remind you that we've highlighted five
- 22:36elements in this series on prayer that we need to have in our prayer life. We need to worship.
- 22:43We need to surrender. We need to have a petition.
- 22:47We need to confess our sins because he won't hear us if we have iniquity in
