Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Day bar two on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest Line,
- 0:03Speaker 1: and we're live from Dancing Rabbit Golf Club.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Before we went to break, I asked you if you
- 0:08Speaker 1: if you had to pick between John David Baker and
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jeff Levy as an offensive coordinator, you would go John
- 0:14Speaker 1: David Baker.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Yes, I would, And you know, kind of judging by
- 0:19Speaker 3: through tone, it's like, well why right, right, you know.
- 0:22Speaker 3: And so for me when I talk about it on
- 0:25Speaker 3: the show a lot is I'm a natural pessimist and
- 0:30Speaker 3: I always look at the risk side on the bottom side, right,
- 0:32Speaker 3: And so I would just simply go, okay, Levy Baker,
- 0:36Speaker 3: what's the floor? Okay, well, yeah, you know, and what's
- 0:39Speaker 3: my ceiling? And my ceiling is one elite year at
- 0:44Speaker 3: Oklahoma with elite talent versus not top twenty five talent
- 0:49Speaker 3: in the Big twelve, right, and then the bottom end
- 0:53Speaker 3: of that we saw the bottom end of the offense
- 0:56Speaker 3: was twenty twenty four with State, in twenty twenty with Oklahoma,
- 1:01Speaker 3: and then over it at East Carolina. And I'm not
- 1:03Speaker 3: saying John David is that much better right now? Because
- 1:07Speaker 3: our sample size, we don't really have a floor, right,
- 1:10Speaker 3: you know, he was good last year, not great. His
- 1:13Speaker 3: first year was really good, but it was extremely up tempo,
- 1:16Speaker 3: and he's not gonna be able to do that in
- 1:18Speaker 3: the SEC right right. He's just key that there's too
- 1:20Speaker 3: much athleticism when you try to play speed. There's too
- 1:25Speaker 3: much speed on the field. I think for the SEC.
- 1:27Speaker 3: That's why you have to have a running game. You
- 1:29Speaker 3: can't go all pass right. You've got to be able
- 1:32Speaker 3: to control tempo and and be able to move players around,
- 1:36Speaker 3: not just go go fast because the athleticism will catch
- 1:40Speaker 3: up to you. So that's why it's more about the
- 1:42Speaker 3: floor than the ceiling in terms of the risk.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Would either one of them be considered a top fifty
- 1:48Speaker 1: offensive coordinator right now?
- 1:50Speaker 2: Yes? No, I didn't know. No.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Well, I mean to John David in our in our
- 1:54Speaker 3: grading system, he's only been doing it for two years.
- 1:56Speaker 3: So you wouldn't have a grade, Okay, you know I wouldn't.
- 1:58Speaker 3: I wouldn't be good or bad about him. I would
- 2:01Speaker 3: just say, look, here's the trend that he's going at
- 2:04Speaker 3: right now. But then if you look at Jeff just
- 2:06Speaker 3: been a play caller for four years right two at
- 2:08Speaker 3: Oklahoma to a Mississippi State Okay, So he has two
- 2:11Speaker 3: years outside the top seventy five one at Oklahoma one
- 2:14Speaker 3: Mississippi State last year.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I don't know what his is.
- 2:17Speaker 1: You tell me he finished it at sixtieth with the
- 2:19Speaker 1: Justede schedule.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Actually, I have an entirely new way of grading guys too,
- 2:26Speaker 3: and I will pull that up right now.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I'm asking the system.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I gotta take a break. That's a perfect timing.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So this is a good tease, all right. So and
- 2:34Speaker 1: Jackson Meadows just said you got to get out. So
- 2:36Speaker 1: we're live from Dancing Rabbit Golf Club on the property
- 2:40Speaker 1: of Pearl River Rest Resort. The show is powered by
- 2:43Speaker 1: ricks Pro Truck Baby Spraying bedliners, lift kits, tires and wheels.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Three locations RPT trucks live here and we're off out
- 3:17Speaker 1: of bounds ESPN one oh five nine The Zone Big
- 3:21Speaker 1: Big giveaway two rounds of golf to Dancing Rabbit Golf
- 3:24Speaker 1: Club and a night at the Golden Moon Hotel. Obviously,
- 3:28Speaker 1: the casino is on the first floor with the Vegas
- 3:31Speaker 1: Style sportsbook. Here's how you enter and you could win
- 3:35Speaker 1: on the Dancing Rabbit Golf text line six oh one
- 3:38Speaker 1: eight eight five three, seven, seven, six. We'd like to
- 3:42Speaker 1: know are you listening on one oh five nine the
- 3:44Speaker 1: zone or streaming the show? Where are you listening from?
- 3:50Speaker 1: And who's your team? And what is your prediction for
- 3:56Speaker 1: your team? Eleven and one?
- 4:01Speaker 2: Which way are we.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Going here for for your team? So six oho one, eight, eight, five, three, seven, seven,
- 4:09Speaker 1: six and bar two we were talking about John David
- 4:13Speaker 1: Baker and Jeff Levy and top fifty offensive coordinators going
- 4:19Speaker 1: into the break. Do you have some numbers for our
- 4:23Speaker 1: beautiful listeners.
- 4:24Speaker 3: There they're still pulling right now? Okay, cool, But here
- 4:27Speaker 3: here I'm gonna I want to hit on one guy
- 4:29Speaker 3: that has been a thorn in the side of the
- 4:32Speaker 3: fan base for seemingly a few years, and that's Mike Bobo.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I got his numbers here, and he's been at
- 4:40Speaker 2: Georgia for three years now.
- 4:42Speaker 3: And by my calculations the way I do things, I
- 4:46Speaker 3: look at three main things that drive football momentum, game control,
- 4:52Speaker 3: scoring efficiency, and expected points above above average so EPA.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Those are the big three. And and with Mike his
- 5:02Speaker 3: first year at Georgia, he was seventh in the country
- 5:04Speaker 3: and all that right, and we've talked about this, you
- 5:07Speaker 3: got to be top three in anything to win a
- 5:09Speaker 3: national title the last twenty five years. So he's seventh
- 5:12Speaker 3: on offense, but then two years ago he was twelve,
- 5:16Speaker 3: and last year it slipped to thirteen. So we all
- 5:20Speaker 3: know that in the SEC, everybody's expectations are sky high, right,
- 5:23Speaker 3: And so with Mike, he's still performing at a good level,
- 5:27Speaker 3: but it's been a little bit of a regression each
- 5:30Speaker 3: year relative to those national championship.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Years with Mancoin Todd Monkin.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Right, and so mister who's now at the Cleveland Browns, Right,
- 5:42Speaker 3: So he's the head coach.
- 5:44Speaker 2: He is the head coach. He is the head coach.
- 5:47Speaker 3: And you know it's sometimes when I text with him
- 5:51Speaker 3: back and forth, it's like it's it's like going to
- 5:54Speaker 3: the college, back to the to the NFL and then
- 5:56Speaker 3: the NFL staffing. When we talk about staffing, the decision
- 6:00Speaker 3: in paradigm between college and the NFL.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Is everybody listening.
- 6:05Speaker 3: You got to understand in the NFL, you think college
- 6:08Speaker 3: football is myopic, and next fan up and Buddy hires
- 6:12Speaker 3: the NFL. There is so much pressure to hire somebody
- 6:15Speaker 3: else's best friend. It is insane up there. I mean,
- 6:20Speaker 3: you want to talk about a bunch of just I mean,
- 6:23Speaker 3: it is just it's the NFL is a different, different
- 6:27Speaker 3: beast when it comes down to staffing and relationships. I
- 6:30Speaker 3: thought it was going to be better. It is not
- 6:33Speaker 3: better than college football. It is it is much much worse.
- 6:36Speaker 1: So I describe a little bit better. So give me
- 6:41Speaker 1: an example. You don't have to give me a team. No,
- 6:44Speaker 1: to give me an example.
- 6:45Speaker 3: An assistant GM that that really likes bow Bounds and
- 6:48Speaker 3: I'm the head coach. I don't like him. I don't
- 6:51Speaker 3: like anything about him. I don't like his attitude. I
- 6:54Speaker 3: don't think he's a good coach. But my assistant GM
- 6:57Speaker 3: wants him on the staff, and I'm I'm just like, Okay.
- 7:01Speaker 3: So there's because gms helped build rosters right the NFL level.
- 7:06Speaker 3: What a lot of head coaches, you know, they don't
- 7:08Speaker 3: even have a saying anything, and some of them don't
- 7:10Speaker 3: even care to, so they're building rosters. You also have
- 7:13Speaker 3: the GM profiles that are saying, hey, here's how you
- 7:15Speaker 3: staff your guys too, And you know, look at look
- 7:20Speaker 3: at Jerry Jones hiring flues. Okay, by the numbers, it
- 7:25Speaker 3: was a terrible higher, right, Jerry Jones worst GM and
- 7:28Speaker 3: call in professional sports.
- 7:30Speaker 2: And he made he made the eber Flues higher.
- 7:33Speaker 3: We know it, right, I mean, even though Schottenheimer is
- 7:35Speaker 3: not going to throw him under the bus, we know
- 7:37Speaker 3: Eberflues was a Jerry Jones guy. But by the numbers,
- 7:40Speaker 3: ibra Flus's defenses at UH, at Indianapolis, and at Chicago
- 7:45Speaker 3: regressed every year. And my calculations had Dallas at best
- 7:49Speaker 3: the twenty five best defense in the NFL before the
- 7:53Speaker 3: season started last year. Now he ended up thirty second,
- 7:56Speaker 3: right right, you know, and and and and and and
- 8:01Speaker 3: him and Colman were armed wrestling for the worst defense
- 8:03Speaker 3: in the seven.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Oh Coleman Hudler. Yeah, yeah, worst defensive coordinator in the
- 8:07Speaker 1: history of Mississippi State.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Oh god, they did that twenty twenty four bad throw
- 8:13Speaker 2: them over the boat.
- 8:14Speaker 3: So but but Jerry made that higher, right, That's a
- 8:17Speaker 3: that's a GM telling the head coach.
- 8:20Speaker 2: This is the guy you're hiring, right right?
- 8:22Speaker 3: You could you, you know, could you imagine Keith Carter telling,
- 8:28Speaker 3: you know, gold Pe Golding, here's here's the new OC.
- 8:32Speaker 2: No, that's not right, but see that the inner workings
- 8:36Speaker 2: of the NFL is is just a little bit different.
- 8:38Speaker 3: You know, it's it's much more connective, it's much more,
- 8:41Speaker 3: much more who you know. So John David Baker, though
- 8:45Speaker 3: by his by his numbers last year and the year before,
- 8:50Speaker 3: actually we're remarkably consistent. I think one of the best
- 8:53Speaker 3: things pre John David Baker at e c U. E
- 8:56Speaker 3: CU was number one, nineteen out of one hundred and
- 8:58Speaker 3: thirty six in offense I my three metrics ECU. So
- 9:01Speaker 3: when John David Baker took over at ECU that twenty
- 9:04Speaker 3: twenty three, that offense was trash.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Okay, absolutely trash.
- 9:10Speaker 1: So give him credit, yeah, for rebooting the offense overnight.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Right and then and then actually maintaining it. Okay, because
- 9:17Speaker 3: his points per possession year one, and this is not
- 9:23Speaker 3: adjusted for talent, I'm assuming ECU is probably in the nineties,
- 9:28Speaker 3: eighties or nineties in talent. So when when when he
- 9:32Speaker 3: posted a sixty eight in scoring efficiency, that's way above talent. Okay, Okay,
- 9:39Speaker 3: he was sixty fifth in game control and momentum development,
- 9:43Speaker 3: the most important number in college but wball he was
- 9:45Speaker 3: sixty fifth. He was fifty fifth last year even though
- 9:48Speaker 3: his scoring efficiency and explosiveness dropped to eighty eight. So
- 9:53Speaker 3: his ability to generate momentum and game control is his
- 9:58Speaker 3: best quality as an offen defensive coordinator. And for his
- 10:01Speaker 3: two years, his average his average ranking was about sixty. Okay,
- 10:06Speaker 3: relative to the you know, relative to the talent, right right,
- 10:09Speaker 3: we got to go back to the talent talent they had,
- 10:11Speaker 3: and then you flipped over and we look at Jeff
- 10:19Speaker 3: and so at Oklahoma, his high his best season was
- 10:24Speaker 3: sixteenth in in momentum and game control, tenth in points
- 10:31Speaker 3: per play, So his scoring efficiency was really good. Mississippi
- 10:35Speaker 3: State the last two years. Okay, it was thirty eighth
- 10:39Speaker 3: and now forty eighth in twenty twenty five. So offensively
- 10:43Speaker 3: the numbers have been there actually pretty good. I mean,
- 10:47Speaker 3: you and I both know State recruits in the mid
- 10:49Speaker 3: twenties to the mid thirties, right, that's kind of their
- 10:51Speaker 3: range bound recruiting, that's their ban, and so to have
- 10:54Speaker 3: an offense in the thirties and forties is a little
- 10:57Speaker 3: bit under the actual talent. But given those numbers, we
- 11:03Speaker 3: just need an average defense right at State to be
- 11:07Speaker 3: six and six, seven and five.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Yeah, if you'd have had Zach Arnett level defense the
- 11:12Speaker 1: last two years and Coleman Hutzler finished outside the top
- 11:15Speaker 1: one hundred and defensive scoring efficiency in both years is DC.
- 11:20Speaker 1: So if you'd ha had somebody just finished between sixtieth
- 11:23Speaker 1: and eightieth, you're looking at probably Levy is sitting here
- 11:28Speaker 1: with a thirteen and twelve or twelve and thirteen overall
- 11:32Speaker 1: record and a couple more wins and conference play instead
- 11:36Speaker 1: of being one in fifteen, and people aren't in total
- 11:39Speaker 1: preak out mode.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Right, you know, twenty twenty four, let's just throw the
- 11:41Speaker 3: film away right there, there's nothing redeeming about.
- 11:44Speaker 1: It's the worst season in the history of my lifetime.
- 11:46Speaker 2: And they've had some bett last year.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Look at if tempo had been controlled, if we had
- 11:51Speaker 3: a better tempo control and better game control offensively and defensively.
- 11:55Speaker 3: You know, yeah, you had to come back miracle win
- 11:58Speaker 3: against Arizona State, right right, So maybe you throw that
- 12:01Speaker 3: one back in and say we didn't deserve to win
- 12:03Speaker 3: that fair enough, but with good game control and good
- 12:06Speaker 3: defensive control.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Do you beat Texas? Yes? Do you beat Florida? Yes?
- 12:09Speaker 2: You beat Tennessee yes? Wow?
- 12:11Speaker 3: I mean the narrative in those three games, you flip
- 12:14Speaker 3: flop those four games. You take the Arizona State loss, right,
- 12:16Speaker 3: you would take that loss for a Texas Florida Tennessee win.
- 12:20Speaker 2: In a heartbeat.
- 12:21Speaker 1: The Texas game I think cost Levy and the Texas
- 12:25Speaker 1: game I think costs the university thirty to forty million dollars.
- 12:29Speaker 1: We gotta take a break. We got the big sec
- 12:31Speaker 1: inside our head. Coming up next, I want to continue
- 12:33Speaker 1: to discuss this day bar two on the Out of
- 12:36Speaker 1: Bounds Show, brought to you by RPT and Rix Pro
- 12:40Speaker 1: Truck Spray in bedliners and lift kits
