- 0:22Welcome in to Real Biz.
- 0:24I am your host, Bubba Sartz.
- 0:25And with me today from Paradox Universe, filmmaker Joseph Mumba.
- 0:30Joseph, welcome to the show.
- 0:31Thanks, man.
- 0:32Thanks for having me.
- 0:34It's absolutely my pleasure.
- 0:36Big fan of your work, at least what I've seen of it.
- 0:40I know I got probably some more research to do, but I think you're an amazingly talented
- 0:45individual.
- 0:46Really grateful to have you on the show today.
- 0:49So before we get into all of that and, you know, the newest projects that you're working
- 0:54on, just wanna give you the floor here for a minute and have you share with us a little bit
- 0:58of your backstory.
- 1:00Well, I'm a filmmaker.
- 1:02I've been a filmmaker for fifteen years, and I'm just out here like everybody else trying to
- 1:06figure it out.
- 1:07I think the biggest misconception I had at the beginning is that the people who I looked up to
- 1:14already has everything figured out, but the truth is we're all just out here trying to
- 1:18figure it out, man.
- 1:19So I'm trying to do the same thing.
- 1:23And I think, especially in the film world, the people that you look up to, we we often don't
- 1:28realize the, you know, five years that might have taken to make that movie.
- 1:33Right?
- 1:33Or you you we just see the final product, and we're kind of in awe of that.
- 1:38And you don't see the trials and tribulations that that person went through, not just to make
- 1:44that single film, but to to even be in a position to make that film.
- 1:50So I I appreciate you being willing to kinda, you know, share that off the top because I
- 1:55think that a lot of people who are familiar with your work and after this, you know, after
- 2:00this episode will go out and get familiar, that it would be easy to say, oh my goodness.
- 2:05Like, Joseph is so amazing.
- 2:08He was probably born that way.
- 2:10Nope.
- 2:11I I am far from that.
- 2:13I and I'll share two things.
- 2:15The first thing I wanna say is, like, I just did a video where, so we have a new movie out,
- 2:21and I know we're gonna get into it.
- 2:22But, this is the first movie that I actually have that has, like, a Rotten Tomatoes page,
- 2:30and this Rotten Tomatoes score is, like, a six out of 10.
- 2:33And that is mind blowing to me.
- 2:36And I did a video to just let people understand why I'm celebrating it so much is because I've
- 2:43made now six films.
- 2:44And across all the films, you can look at it, like, two out of ten, two out of ten, four out
- 2:49of ten, three out of 10, and eventually, I
- 2:51got a six out.
- 2:51I'm like, a six?
- 2:52I'm like, that is more than 50 per like, what?
- 2:55Like so yeah.
- 2:56No.
- 2:56I I man, trust me, man.
- 2:59I'm I'm I'm just like I said, I'm just out here trying to figure it out.
- 3:04And and recently, also, I was watching an interview, a sixty minute interview with
- 3:09Christopher Nolan, a bunch of other filmmakers who know who he is.
- 3:14And, you know, he's like the top of the mountain for me.
- 3:18Right?
- 3:18He's like, man, if I can get there.
- 3:20And to to learn I just learned recently that his first breakout feature film, no one wanted
- 3:26it distributed.
- 3:27Like, when other companies saw it, they thought it was a wacky, confusing film, and he and he
- 3:33fought for that movie for, like, a whole year.
- 3:35So I'm like, oh, I'm like, if Christopher Nolan has to deal with rejection and being told
- 3:41you're bad, then who am I?
- 3:43You know?
- 3:44So yeah.
- 3:44No.
- 3:44Absolutely, man.
- 3:46I'm just trying to figure it out.
- 3:48And I think that that story, pretty ubiquitous.
- 3:52Right?
- 3:53Especially in the film world because it is very ingrained in its, you know, in its ways and
- 4:00being the especially in the content world that we're all it's so crazy that it it's become
- 4:06what it is now where really anyone with a cell phone, which is literally, you know,
- 4:106,000,000,000 people on the planet could become, you know, filmmakers or content
- 4:15creators.
- 4:16Right?
- 4:17That film are still the top of that heap.
- 4:21Right?
- 4:21And even though movies aren't, grossing at the box office as they did when we were growing up,
- 4:27Right?
- 4:27These mega hits that are, you know, taking in hundreds of millions of dollars and billion
- 4:33dollars on the opening of the, you know, opening weekends.
- 4:37Even though the film industry isn't that anymore, that it is still the top heap of the
- 4:44content that one can create.
- 4:46Right?
- 4:46That storytelling inside of film still has that.
- 4:51A guy like Christopher Nolan, no doubt, has gone through plenty of people who were
- 4:57established in that world before he got there that were like, oh, you're never going to make
- 5:03it.
- 5:03You're you don't even know what you're doing.
- 5:05And then, it's because the the industry itself was not really made for pioneers.
- 5:13Right?
- 5:13And people had to come in and change it.
- 5:15I would say even a Steven Spielberg who is on the Mount Rushmore of filmmakers, you know,
- 5:21that he would he was not necessarily welcomed in with open arms.
- 5:27I'm sure when they brought Jaws to the you know, that people aren't you know, they weren't
- 5:33clamoring.
- 5:33The establishment was like, this is never going to work.
- 5:36What are you talking about?
- 5:38Correct.
- 5:39Yep.
- 5:39No.
- 5:39That that is, like, that is, like, the it is more common in the film business, that
- 5:46filmmakers get told no first.
- 5:49Get told no multiple times, and eventually then the filmmaker is like, well, I was right to
- 5:53begin with, but you just didn't you you just didn't see what I saw.
- 5:57So yeah.
- 5:58No.
- 5:58It just and the more I find out that the people I looked up to had to deal with the same thing
- 6:05at various levels, the more I'm like, okay, man.
- 6:08It's not that bad.
- 6:09You could you could relax and just keep doing what you're doing.
- 6:11You know?
- 6:12You you you'll get there for sure.
- 6:14Yeah.
- 6:15Well and, I mean, so so many examples.
- 6:17Like, every famous director, writer that you that we can think of, George Lucas and Scorsese
- 6:23and all
- 6:24of these guys were were all when they were trying to break in in the seventies, everyone
- 6:30that was established in Hollywood is like, you're nuts.
- 6:32You're What what is this what is this star's thing you're doing?
- 6:37Stop it.
- 6:38Stop stop it.
- 6:39Star what?
- 6:40Stop who?
- 6:40It's never gonna work.
- 6:41Get out of here.
- 6:43That Nobody's gonna wanna watch that.
- 6:44Like, wait.
- 6:46You your shark isn't working?
- 6:47You you stop stop that, freaking artist.
- 6:54Oh, it it's such a great, but it's such a great, lesson for life.
- 7:01Right?
- 7:01That's what makes these stories so inspiring and and to be a fan, not just of the films, but
- 7:08of the filmmakers themselves, that it it teaches us so much about life because they
- 7:14never did stop.
- 7:15And and it really is in life, you're going to have trials and tribulations that you're going
- 7:22to fight, and there's gonna be so many roadblocks.
- 7:25But if you stay the course and and I think it starts with a dream.
- 7:29No doubt.
- 7:29Mhmm.
- 7:30That if you have a dream, you have to be willing to go through all of that.
- 7:34And in many ways, you know, life or the universe or god or whatever you you, you know,
- 7:40you want to quantify it as, right, and and label it as is going to challenge you to see
- 7:45how much heart you have to make that dream a reality.
- 7:50And the bigger the dream, the greater the challenge is.
- 7:53Yes.
- 7:54Absolutely.
- 7:55I I 1000000000% believe in that because, like, it's if you have a dream that is, like, built
- 8:06on quicksand, which means, like, you that dream is not deeply embedded in you.
- 8:11Like, it's not something like, oh my god.
- 8:12I have to do this thing.
- 8:14I feel like your dream has to be strong enough to withstand the test of time.
- 8:19And now what I I tell people, like, whenever I got asked, like, what didn't what was the thing
- 8:23you didn't expect to happen?
- 8:25I'm like, I just did not expect how long it would take me to get to where I just got.
- 8:30Right?
- 8:30Like, it it took me if you asked me at 17, I was like, yeah, man.
- 8:35It was, you know, two years, three years.
- 8:37You know, I'm gonna come in.
- 8:38I'm gonna do my thing.
- 8:39I put in work, and then, you know, I get discovered.
- 8:41I actually remembered I was 19 years old, and I had the audacity to pick up the phone and call
- 8:48Warner Brothers.
- 8:49And I was like, hey, man.
- 8:52I got this great idea, you know, and I'm trying to do this thing.
- 8:55And the gentleman on the phone was so kind.
- 8:58He was so nice to me, and he just heard he just stayed there and let me talk.
- 9:03And when I was done, he's like, alright, kid.
- 9:06I understand.
- 9:07You're about fifteen years away from what you're telling me.
- 9:11Please go back.
- 9:13And and I
- 9:13was like, man, you don't understand.
- 9:15Watch me.
- 9:16Two years.
- 9:16I'll be back.
- 9:17I'll be right back.
- 9:19Yeah.
- 9:19No.
- 9:19He was right.
- 9:20Fifteen years, man.
- 9:22Jesus.
- 9:23Yeah.
- 9:24No.
- 9:24So but your your dream have to be strong enough to withstand the the test of of time and the
- 9:31and the because, honestly, like, the things like, for what I've learned as I've continued
- 9:37to journey is that the things that happen that I at certain stages, I was like, man, this
- 9:43thing is really bad.
- 9:44It sucks that this thing is happening.
- 9:46Why did this have to happen?
- 9:47The more I've gone along, I have now come to appreciate the fact that those things happen
- 9:52because they were happening for me, not against me because, like, they helped me become who I
- 9:58am today.
- 9:58Like, I wouldn't if I didn't deal with a, I wouldn't have the the the skills and the
- 10:03capability to deal with b, c, and d.
- 10:06You know?
- 10:07So it that's just the way it is.
- 10:09And and I'm I'm honestly, genuinely grateful for the journey for sure.
- 10:14Yes.
- 10:15We have to practice gratitude in all moments, right, not just for the positive things that
- 10:19happen, but for what most people would look at as negative things because it is those moments
- 10:25that have made us the unstoppable forces that we are today.
- 10:29And and your story is no different than mine.
- 10:32Two years ago, I had something inside of me.
- 10:35And, honestly, I thought I was quitting my factory job to be a rock star, Joseph.
- 10:39And p lizards of the show have heard me tell the story, but, I had a bunch of gigs booked,
- 10:43and I had started the podcast just because having been on a few myself and being a podcast
- 10:50fan, it was like, well, I could definitely do this.
- 10:52And I have all these artists that are around me in the music world and comedy and and
- 10:56filmmaking that I would love to have a conversation with them and then broadcast that
- 11:02to the world.
- 11:02That would be fun.
- 11:04So what started out as fun as the, you know, the tours commenced during the summer and I was
- 11:10away from home and staying up way too late, and, I was too damn old for it in my mid
- 11:15thirties and didn't have the stomach for it, then it was like, I think I'm gonna go all in
- 11:19on this podcasting thing.
- 11:21Like, I'm having a really great time doing it.
- 11:23I feel, I feel comfortable in that space, and not that I don't feel comfortable on stage, but
- 11:29I just felt at home.
- 11:30And there was something driving and pulling me in this direction.
- 11:35And when I committed fully to the pull and just going with it and becoming better at my craft,
- 11:42that things really started to accelerate.
- 11:44And now I'm looking back and going, wow.
- 11:46We've done, like, a thousand episodes in two years, and we've created so much more content
- 11:52than I've ever thought possible.
- 11:53I mean, beyond what we've done in house here, but, you know, broadcasting from the red
- 11:59carpets of award shows.
- 12:01And we were just with the sports network broadcasting a charity softball game featuring
- 12:05players from the Minnesota Vikings.
- 12:07And you're looking back and you're going, if I wouldn't have just committed at any point and
- 12:12stayed committed, we would have never gotten these opportunities to go shake hands with guys
- 12:17that are performing at the top of the heap in the one of the biggest businesses and sports
- 12:22franchises in the entire planet.
- 12:25Yeah.
- 12:26No.
- 12:26Like, absolutely, man.
- 12:28Like, that that shift, the turn, man, man, you're you're we're going into, different
- 12:35pockets I don't really get to talk about too much.
- 12:38It's like, one of the things that has been happening more and more again as as I continue
- 12:43the journey is is being aware of the shifts.
- 12:46They're like they're not huge.
- 12:47Right?
- 12:48They're not, like, huge, huge shifts, but they are, like, just shifts that's, like, nudging
- 12:52you in the right direction.
- 12:53And most of the time, it will feel almost like it's the wrong thing to do.
- 12:57But, like, if you just kinda follow along, then it kinda positions you in a way where you're
- 13:02like, oh, wow.
- 13:03Oh.
- 13:03Oh, I see.
- 13:04That's where I'm supposed to be going.
- 13:06And then when you go down that path and you commit, you're like, wow.
- 13:10So, like, I I'm I'm right there with you, man.
- 13:12Like, for for me, for example, like, okay.
- 13:16I wanted to be, you know, a filmmaker.
- 13:18That's the thing.
- 13:19Right?
- 13:19Be a filmmaker.
- 13:20But, like, the idea of, like, doing, like, social media and doing content and getting in
- 13:25front of people and doing like, that sounded to me like the the last thing you do after you
- 13:30made a movie.
- 13:31Like, you make a movie, then you go market it.
- 13:33But, like, the more I was kinda positioning like, social media have changed my life in so
- 13:41many different ways than I could have ever imagined.
- 13:43Like, the people I've been able to to connect with and the relationship I'm able to build and
- 13:48and the opportunities that come from it that then turn around is helping the filmmaking has
- 13:54been a game changer for me.
- 13:57But, honestly, if you ask me just like you, like, two twenty four months ago, I would have
- 14:01been like, no, man.
- 14:02Just oh, I I make movies.
- 14:04That's all I do.
- 14:04Like, I I know.
- 14:05Yeah.
- 14:06Like you know?
- 14:07But, yeah, seriously, just the shifts in life, man, they're they're really again, they work
- 14:14for you for sure.
- 14:16Well and there's a a mental preparation, I think, that, that bring awareness to that.
- 14:22Right?
- 14:23So it's kind of having all of those stressors that we that we talked about a few minutes ago,
- 14:27those tribulations that you go through that mentally prepare you to be able to see when
- 14:33those shifts are coming a little more clearly.
- 14:36And then as we get older and we have more experience, we're able to identify them almost
- 14:42before they're coming.
- 14:43We're able to kind of forecast things that are happening and to go, hey.
- 14:48This is going to be get this and this is going to be get this.
- 14:52So I need to be prepared to start making that shift ahead of time.
- 14:56And, because these, you know, battleships and aircraft carriers that are our lives don't turn
- 15:01on a dime.
- 15:03It no.
- 15:03They don't.
- 15:04They don't.
- 15:04And then especially when, you know, when you when you turn around and you realize, oh, wow.
- 15:09When I was in my early twenties, I could I could easily just get in my truck and, you
- 15:15know, and take a quick drive and hop and go go to California, go do that, go meet together.
- 15:20Like, now in my thirties, I'm like, yeah.
- 15:22No.
- 15:22I can't do that.
- 15:22I have a wife, and then eventually, you're gonna have kids.
- 15:25And, oh, crap.
- 15:26Oh, yeah.
- 15:26No.
- 15:27I can't I can't just hop around.
- 15:29So then but I have to still be strategic and nimble enough to take opportunities as they
- 15:34come, but it comes with being aware so that you could see you coming before it comes so you can
- 15:40prepare yourself and everyone else around you for what might be coming.
- 15:44Yeah, man.
- 15:44Absolutely.
- 15:46Joseph, I'd love to dig into your, you know, your your filmmaking process a little bit,
- 15:52because I know you're kind of writing, directing.
- 15:54You're doing all things.
- 15:55Right?
- 15:56Mhmm.
- 15:56So where does it begin with you?
- 15:59Is it a spark of inspiration, and the story kinda comes in an instant usually, or or is it
- 16:06sometimes, like, it's just, like, you get the the first page and then it evolves from there?
- 16:13Like, I'm curious because, like, in the songwriting world for me, and I know you're a
- 16:17musician as well, so that we could talk about that too.
- 16:20But, like, for me, most of the songs I've ever written in my life have just been done.
- 16:24Right?
- 16:25Like, it was a single stroke of inspiration.
- 16:27It was done.
- 16:27But, an hour long film, you know, hour plus long film is a different animal than a three
- 16:34minute song.
- 16:35So I'm just curious about that process, and I know it I'm sure it's different, you know, with
- 16:40every project.
- 16:41But is there some some, you know, something that are typical in your process?
- 16:47Yeah.
- 16:47I I would say the thing that is most consistent is that initial idea that won't let go.
- 16:53Right?
- 16:53It is it is an idea that, like, almost, like, grabs me mentally and says, hey.
- 16:59I'm here, and you need to pay attention to me.
- 17:01Like so for example so and and the the movies that I end up falling in love with and doing
- 17:09are those ones that is like, hey.
- 17:11This is an idea, and you have to you gotta do something about this.
- 17:14You know?
- 17:15I'm gonna keep knocking around in your head.
- 17:17So I and it happened again, like, two two days ago.
- 17:20I was just I watched something, and then I was out and about, and I was, like, thinking about
- 17:26life.
- 17:27And then all of a sudden, it just kinda hits me.
- 17:29Right?
- 17:30And then before you know it, the the concept of the film is like, hey.
- 17:34This is what I am.
- 17:36And then from there, once I get what the concept is, what tends to happen is, like, then
- 17:42the beginning and, like, the middle and the end or maybe the beginning and the end of the
- 17:47movie, like, comes to me.
- 17:48I'm like, okay.
- 17:48I know this is how the movie starts.
- 17:50And then if I do everything right, this is how the movie's gonna end.
- 17:53Then then then it becomes a journey of, okay.
- 17:56So then what do we do with the
- 17:58rest of this?
- 18:00Like, that that is the challenge.
- 18:02Like, so,
- 18:04like, my like, I can I can call out to all my movies?
- 18:08And what has happened is that I naturally speaking, I'm I'm a director.
- 18:15That that is where my talent lies.
- 18:17Like, I I have that idea, and I have the beginning.
- 18:20And so what I used to try to do is like, okay.
- 18:22Let me take this idea and go give it to another writer and so they could help me bring it to
- 18:27life.
- 18:28As time went on, I realized that, oh, man.
- 18:31No.
- 18:31I have to be the person to give birth to this story in its entirety because there is so much
- 18:37nuances in the story that I just cannot fully articulate.
- 18:41I have to write it down.
- 18:42So then I had to, like, learn how to be a writer, and then that took time, and it's still
- 18:46taking time.
- 18:47So what has happened is, like so as once I have the beginning, I write it down.
- 18:51It's like and it will run me, like, page one to, like, 15, and then that's all I have.
- 18:56Then I would just jump to the very end, and I'll write the very end.
- 19:00And then I would just sit there for months and look at that story.
- 19:04I'm like, okay.
- 19:06So where do we go from here?
- 19:08And, you know, that's just that's my process.
- 19:10And then if if, like, so I had a I had an opportunity.
- 19:14I think my fourth film where I was approached by a distributor who had financing, who was
- 19:20like, hey.
- 19:21We need to make this movie.
- 19:22Here's the idea.
- 19:23Here's the concept, and we need it delivered by x amount of time.
- 19:26So that kinda put a crunch time on me, and then I just had to force myself to get through it.
- 19:32But, you know, it's not my best work because I didn't follow my process.
- 19:36But if if I can whenever I've been able to follow through my process, the early idea and
- 19:41then the procrastination that happens in between, I usually come up
- 19:45I usually come up with something that that is you know,
- 19:48that's something I would, you know, be proud of.
- 19:51So Yeah.
- 19:52Well, that that procrastination period as you put it, that's like the time that the cake is
- 19:57in the oven.
- 19:58Right?
- 19:58There's a lot of excitement when you're putting all the ingredients in the bowl, and then we
- 20:02all know what it's like to eat a birthday cake.
- 20:05But that time where it's just sitting there and you really can't see much happening, but what's
- 20:10happening is what makes it good at the end.
- 20:13Right?
- 20:14And that that may be a little bit too simple of an analogy.
- 20:18I that's a great analogy.
- 20:19It's great.
- 20:21Yeah.
- 20:22But as someone now who is, you know, starting to dabble and I wouldn't necessarily say it's
- 20:28film because I'm just, you know, really swimming in the unscripted content side.
- 20:34I love doing interviews.
- 20:35I love telling but it's telling stories.
- 20:37The stories just happen to be real.
- 20:39Right?
- 20:40And and the documentary style things are are what it is.
- 20:43So while I'm not making pieces of fiction that are telling a story that was made up, you know,
- 20:49with whatever bits of truth may be in it about fictional characters, we we're still trying to
- 20:55pull those real stories out, which in in some cases, I think may be even harder to do because
- 21:02you have to get it right.
- 21:04You know?
- 21:04You you can't fudge the the, you know, the facts along the edges.
- 21:09Yeah.
- 21:10No.
- 21:10I I man, I commend you and anyone who who does, like, documentaries or anything that has to do
- 21:16with, like, real life stories because that's like to me to me, it's like being on stage or
- 21:23being a stage actor.
- 21:24Like, I have nowhere to hide.
- 21:25Like like, you you have to tell the truth.
- 21:28You can't just like, oh, man.
- 21:31Alright.
- 21:31Well, this is not working, hey.
- 21:32But what if we went here?
- 21:34You know?
- 21:34Like, you might have, like, what if we went here while I would have, like, what if I went
- 21:39here, here, maybe here, and here, and maybe we can come through here, then we could patch it
- 21:42up.
- 21:43Like but you guys are like, no.
- 21:44Like so, man, hats off to you and anyone in your in your realm.
- 21:49That it's it's incredible what you guys are able to do and to be able to tell a story that
- 21:54captivates an audience, and that's huge, man.
- 21:56That's that's huge for sure.
- 21:59Yeah.
- 21:59I appreciate that.
- 22:01Joseph, what do you got coming up here, you know, over the course of the next twelve months
- 22:05or so that we can look forward to seeing?
- 22:08I have a film out right now called Whispers Bind.
- 22:12It is a psychological horror starring my wife, Amber Mba, and me as her love interest directed
- 22:19by me and written by both of us.
- 22:21It was like, this film was, like, my best filmmaking experience because it was like a
- 22:26family fun project.
- 22:28You know?
- 22:28It was just me, my wife, my friends, and our collaborators working out of my house and other
- 22:34locations, and we just made a movie that we're very happy with and proud of.
- 22:38And and so, yeah, it's called Whispers Buying.
- 22:41You know, look up the trailer, check it out, and see if it's for you, and, you know, go go
- 22:45give it a watch.
- 22:46It's currently out on Roku and Fossum, and soon it will be Tubi and other platforms.
- 22:52But beyond that, I am writing a movie I've been writing since 2020.
- 22:59Procrastination.
- 23:00Yeah.
- 23:01I've been writing this movie since since 2020.
- 23:05Like, in 2020, I had that same thing.
- 23:07I had the beginning and the end.
- 23:09And then I I've I'm on page 70, and the movie needs to be it's like the story just keeps
- 23:15going.
- 23:15So it's gonna be about a 100 and something pages long.
- 23:19And, but it's an action packed, very much like the like the kind of movie I've been trying to
- 23:25make for all these years.
- 23:26It's, like, gonna be a culmination of everything I've learned so far.
- 23:29So it's gonna be an exciting one.
- 23:31So those, you know so Whisper's Bun, I'll go check it out, and then look out for my next
- 23:36action movie.
- 23:38I'm not I'm not gonna drop the title just yet.
- 23:40So but that's it.
- 23:42Yep.
- 23:42Awesome.
- 23:43Well, Joseph, I I appreciate you coming on the show with me today and, sharing a little bit of
- 23:48your process.
- 23:48I'm sure this won't be the last time we'll be chatting, by any means.
- 23:53I look forward to hopefully getting a chance to work with you on some films in the future and
- 23:58whether that's you helping me direct some, documentary style stuff or maybe me getting to
- 24:03star in one of your feature length films one day even though I have no aspirations to be an
- 24:09actor.
- 24:09You never know when the idea might hit you that you're like, no.
- 24:12It's just it's about him, and you just have to kinda play yourself with a different name.
- 24:18That I could probably accomplish.
- 24:20Yes, man.
- 24:21I I'm I'm so happy that you're open to to the possibility of of the variety of collaboration
- 24:28that can happen.
- 24:29And I that's one of the thing that I love about our industry is that when you step in and you
- 24:34meet like minded people, you just gotta kinda let the magic happen.
- 24:38So I'm I'm excited, and I'm looking forward to it, man, for sure.
- 24:42Joseph Imbah, thank you so much for for spending some time with me here today, and
- 24:47thank you for being part of the scene.
- 24:49Thank you so much.
