- 0:35What's going on, everybody, and welcome to The Drive Thru, our monthly recap
- 0:39where we put together a menu of local, racing, and random car adjacent news.
- 0:43I'm your host, Brad.
- 0:44With me, as always, is Eric.
- 0:46Heyo!
- 0:46And we also have Tanya.
- 0:50Now let's pull up to window number one for some industry news.
- 0:54I would like to talk about BMW.
- 0:58Before you all change the channel, BMW has announced, well their M division
- 1:03has announced, that they're going to finally make A touring for those of
- 1:08you that don't know touring means wagon and BMW has never made an M3 wagon.
- 1:14The closest they ever got was the 46 where they made a prototype and there
- 1:18have been all kinds of conversions where people have taken regular three series
- 1:21wagons and converted them with all the M, you know, parts and all that good stuff.
- 1:26Well, BMW M has confirmed today that they are going to finally release one.
- 1:30It's going to be built on the same chassis as the M3 Sedan and the M4 Coupe.
- 1:35It's going to have the same motor, the same everything.
- 1:37It's going to be basically the same car, just the long roof edition.
- 1:40You know, all the long roof fans in the club rejoice.
- 1:43Yay!
- 1:45Here's the problem though.
- 1:46There's several.
- 1:47Well, the one glaring problem for us is that it is not coming to the U.
- 1:52S.
- 1:53No surprise there.
- 1:55What are some of the other problems, Eric?
- 1:56You say there's several.
- 1:57Well, other, other than the fact that it's A BMW.
- 1:59Well, yeah.
- 2:00And that's, that's, that's my leading problem.
- 2:02The second problem is that grill.
- 2:04'cause if it looks anything like the current M three, you can keep it.
- 2:07Oh my God.
- 2:10, the spy photos that rodent track posted of the back were just a rendering and
- 2:14that was, you know, a wide body version of the current three series, which
- 2:17I'm okay with from that rear angle, but the rest of it, mm, not so much.
- 2:22If from a usability standpoint, I know that's not the point of our performance
- 2:27wagon, but if it's anything like the current three series wagons, it's.
- 2:30It's pretty much useless and just buy an M3 and call it a day.
- 2:33You're not really missing out on a whole lot.
- 2:35I will say there's a probably an upside to it and the fact that even though
- 2:39we'll never see it, it is going to be available in a manual transmission.
- 2:43So plus a million points to BMW for putting a standard.
- 2:46Well, that's, that's the lower model.
- 2:49I mean the lower model of the M3.
- 2:51Now if you want to get the competition model with the 30 more horsepower
- 2:54and the all wheel drive optional.
- 2:56They did away with the manual.
- 2:57It's got to be automatic only.
- 2:59I'm suspecting it's probably got something to do with the manual
- 3:02probably has a hard time dealing with the torque numbers or something.
- 3:05I mean, that's the excuse that a lot of these manufacturers have started
- 3:08to give lately, but it's still a disappointment and all wheel drive manual
- 3:13wagon with close to 500 horsepower.
- 3:16I mean, sign me up if that's the case, except for signing without one from BMW.
- 3:22Yeah, exactly.
- 3:23And the competitors too, at the Audi and the Mercedes.
- 3:26Uh, you know, the RS4, RS6s, and the Mercedes E63 wagons, we're
- 3:30never going to see those either.
- 3:31I mean, wagons, as we covered in a later episode that our listeners will
- 3:36enjoy, wagons in the United States are basically dead at this point.
- 3:40I was going to say, so if you've got the money for an M3 Touring in the U.
- 3:44S., go out and buy yourself a Porsche Macan S.
- 3:48I would agree with that statement and you'd probably be much
- 3:50happier at the end of the day.
- 3:52Exactly.
- 3:52Tanya, we know how you feel about the wagons.
- 3:55How do you feel about this story?
- 3:56I could care less.
- 4:03she, she checked out at wagon, at bmw, at m at, at automatic, all of
- 4:10those things, at not coming to the us.
- 4:13She, she has not been a part of this story at all.
- 4:15, all the boxes got checked right from the headline.
- 4:20, well Poo.
- 4:21Anyway, you had me at Giant Kidney Grill and I walked away.
- 4:25Oh my god, that grill looks like, how is that legal?
- 4:28I mean, that's why it's not coming to the U.
- 4:29S.
- 4:30because it's not legal.
- 4:30It does not have the pedestrian crash guards.
- 4:33I just want to know who the engineer at BMW was that was at Waffle House and was
- 4:38staring at the cook going, you know what?
- 4:40That's a good idea for what a grill should look like.
- 4:43It looks like a waffle maker.
- 4:44That's wide open They were clear.
- 4:46They were clearly looking at a large mouth bass and they just said let's
- 4:50put two of them together And there's our new grill, you know, it's not the
- 4:52kidney It's the bass It's the upside to the aftermarket of the new bmws is that
- 4:57all the tuners are going to make the grills look like the old cars So I guess
- 5:01there's the plus But you know speaking of crazy town I think that is the new
- 5:07name for Detroit these days because there is all sorts of bonkers going on.
- 5:13We got CEOs stepping down, Jim Hackett from Ford is out, we've got GM still
- 5:19suing Chrysler over like secret clandestine moles and they're playing
- 5:24spy versus spy and offshore accounts.
- 5:26I mean, it's like the next edition of James Bond is going on between
- 5:30Fiat and Chrysler and, and, and GM.
- 5:33And then we've got on the same, same token, uh, Caesar, their Remini.
- 5:38Cesare Remiti.
- 5:39Yeah.
- 5:39Right.
- 5:40Who brought Fiat through all the tough times through the darkness.
- 5:44He's like the Iacocca.
- 5:45Of fiat has passed away.
- 5:48So there's all sorts of turmoil.
- 5:50There's all sorts of upheaval.
- 5:51And when you read all these different articles that we're going to put out
- 5:54there, you're still wondering what happened to the merger between fiat
- 5:58Peugeot and all the rest of that, which nobody's talking about right now.
- 6:01And then on top of it all, they've decided they're going to come up
- 6:05with a new name for the company.
- 6:07Yeah.
- 6:07Yeah.
- 6:07So, so yeah, they're changing the company name too.
- 6:10Stellantis?
- 6:12Stellantis.
- 6:14Let's go to Atlantis in a Stellantis.
- 6:16I mean, I mean, what are these people?
- 6:18What are they doing over there?
- 6:20They're drinking absinthe.
- 6:21Yeah, I don't understand.
- 6:23Apparently, the word is rooted in the
- 6:31Which I don't know if I fully agree with that, but Stella in Italian is star.
- 6:37Yeah, but why couldn't we have just called it Atlantis?
- 6:39They could have had Aquaman as their mascot.
- 6:41Because Atlantis is trademarked.
- 6:44There's an entire resort.
- 6:46There's an entire city under the water.
- 6:48You can't just take a whole city.
- 6:50Yes, the Alantans, or the resident people from the city
- 6:55of Atlantis lost under the sea.
- 6:57Have a copyright.
- 6:59I was just thinking about it because it would have made sense with like
- 7:02the Trident, the Maserati logo would have made total sense there.
- 7:05And then, you know, the cars are starting to look like fish nowadays anyway.
- 7:08So it would have been completely thematic.
- 7:11We could have had these really cool like fish scale paint jobs, like the
- 7:14old, uh, the Ford Mystique where it would turn green and purple and change.
- 7:18I think there's a whole theme that they're missing out on here.
- 7:21But this Atlantis thing, do not understand what is going on over there.
- 7:25I mean, they have lost their minds.
- 7:26As long as they continue to make the Hellcat, I'm okay
- 7:32with whatever else they do.
- 7:33Well, and that's part of the whole, you know, the lawsuit thing
- 7:36and the labor with GM and Fiat.
- 7:39I mean, it's just like, what is going on?
- 7:41Like, why does GM even care at the end of the day what Fiat Chrysler is up to?
- 7:46Like, let them just go build their muscle cars.
- 7:48Are you jealous because the C8 is a disappointment?
- 7:51Moving on.
- 7:52So Brad, you've got some other Detroit news.
- 7:55What have you got for us?
- 7:56So yeah, Chevy just came out with a C8 Corvette.
- 8:00Everybody's heard about it.
- 8:01It's, you know, it made the rounds about, you know, what,
- 8:03three, four, five, six months ago.
- 8:05That's not what we're talking about right now.
- 8:06Right now we're going to talk about the outgoing C7 and the C7 ZR1.
- 8:13Because apparently at the time Chevrolet claimed that the
- 8:15C7 ZR1, you know, with a 6.
- 8:182 liter supercharged motor, a V8, 755 horsepower, its top speed
- 8:23was claimed to 212 miles an hour.
- 8:25That's the official number from Chevrolet.
- 8:27Really?
- 8:28Yep.
- 8:29Well, it turns out the car can go just a little bit quicker with the optional
- 8:34eight speed automatic transmission fitted with the low downforce
- 8:38arrow setup, not the, uh, you know, giant wings and all that stuff that
- 8:41some of us have seen at the track.
- 8:44It can get to a whopping Miles per hour.
- 8:48I gotta say that's pretty impressive that it's knocking on the doors
- 8:53of your What your law ferraris and your 918s and all those?
- 8:58McLaren p1s.
- 8:59I mean for a car that costs a fraction of the cost that's
- 9:02pretty damn awesome Yeah, exactly.
- 9:04I mean, and whether you like the design of the C7 or not, I mean, styling is,
- 9:09is an acquired taste in a lot of cases.
- 9:12It's a pretty slippery car compared to some of the old ones.
- 9:14There's a lot of engineering in that.
- 9:15I've had the luxury of riding in many C7s on NCM at the factory test track.
- 9:21Phenomenal car.
- 9:22Absolutely phenomenal car.
- 9:23But to know that the ZR1, you know, that kind of final hoorah for that
- 9:27car, that it can do it well over 200 miles an hour is that's impressive.
- 9:31I never, I thought, figured the top speed on a, on a Corvette
- 9:35was probably 170, 180 at best.
- 9:38But over 200 and on a, on a standard Corvette, you're probably right.
- 9:43It's probably around 180, 186, something like that.
- 9:46But yeah, the ZR1 with the giant blower on top and, you know, and
- 9:50the correct aerodynamic bits.
- 9:52Yeah.
- 9:52214 miles an hour.
- 9:54Dang.
- 9:55That is commendable.
- 9:57I mean, I tip my hat to Chevrolet for, for creating something like that.
- 10:00That costs, what were they new?
- 10:02Like 120, 000.
- 10:03Yeah.
- 10:05That's the fastest Corvette, basically.
- 10:08Yeah.
- 10:09Production Corvette, because when you look at the old Lingenfelters and all those
- 10:14specialty Callaways and all that stuff, they would do over 200 back in the 80s.
- 10:19But they also had like 12 turbos and they were completely
- 10:21gutted and everything else.
- 10:23And they could do it once and then, you know, never again.
- 10:26You have to take hours to cool down.
- 10:27Yeah.
- 10:27You needed a parachute and six miles to slow the thing down.
- 10:30Cause it had, you know, 10 speed bicycle brakes and you couldn't go to the
- 10:34dealership, buy the car and then go have a warranty with it and run this, this run.
- 10:39Yeah.
- 10:39So that's, that's awesome.
- 10:40So, wow.
- 10:41Wow.
- 10:42Really cool.
- 10:43So what else about Corvettes here?
- 10:45You mentioned the C8.
- 10:46Sticking with the Corvette, we're going to go with the C8 now.
- 10:49And a little bit of news.
- 10:51The C8 has its first recall.
- 10:53Apparently they try to eat people.
- 10:56Now it's not like, it's not like the Mustang's eating people at the
- 10:59cars and coffee and stuff like that.
- 11:00It's nothing like that.
- 11:02The problem is with the frunk, you know, Chevy, this is their, their
- 11:05first official foray in a, you know, in a mid engine Corvette.
- 11:10So they've got a little bit of space up front and that's where people can
- 11:12store their bag with their new balances and their gold chains and stuff.
- 11:16Well, there's a recall because apparently.
- 11:19When you turn the car off, the frunk release button doesn't activate.
- 11:23Apparently the, the voltage to wake the car up.
- 11:26Is too high and the button it won't activate so god forbid your
- 11:31your new balance are stuck in the frunk You got your junk in the
- 11:37frunk, yeah Junk in the front.
- 11:39Apparently you can't get them out with the car turned off now Chevy is fixing
- 11:43this with an over the air if if if you want Uh update to your system or you can
- 11:48go to the dealership and have it fixed.
- 11:50Basically.
- 11:51They're lowering The, the voltage requirement to have the button active.
- 11:55I've been waiting and then I Chevy recalls the C8 Corvette because people
- 12:01can get trapped inside the front trunk.
- 12:04Why are you inside the front trunk?
- 12:08Because there's also another problem with the frunk.
- 12:11They pop up at speed.
- 12:12There's been a number of issues where the frunk, because they
- 12:18can't figure out how to keep it latched, it will pop up at speed.
- 12:21Now, luckily at the HOD event we were all just at, there was a C8 Corvette there.
- 12:25I did not hear anything about him and his frunk popping up.
- 12:29But, you know, and he was in my run group, so I didn't see that
- 12:31happen, but That explains the blue painter's tape holding the front down.
- 12:35I get it now.
- 12:37It happens.
- 12:38Wow, so it sounds like some backwards wiring there.
- 12:42Won't stay closed when it's running and won't open when it's turned off.
- 12:44That is, wow.
- 12:46It seems like they just need to switch those two wires and you're good.
- 12:49So, uh, we got another article here.
- 12:51I think we want to dive into, and it recently crossed our desk.
- 12:54Thanks to one of our other members, the 22 best GT cars and GT standing
- 13:00for grand touring cars that road and track put out, uh, not too late
- 13:04within this month of August here.
- 13:05So do we want to go through that?
- 13:07I mean, I scrolled through the carousel and there's only about four
- 13:10or five cars I actually care about.
- 13:11How about you guys?
- 13:12I don't know what the criteria were for the best GT cars, like what is
- 13:17the price point or anything because there are some cars on this list
- 13:21that I would never be able to afford.
- 13:23I can't even dream of how much it would cost to afford one of those cars.
- 13:27And then there are some that are like, Oh, there's a Corvette on the list.
- 13:30Yeah, okay, there's a Ford Mustang and then there's a McLaren.
- 13:35Yeah, the oddest comparison was, yeah, there's the Mustang and then right
- 13:40underneath it, the Ferrari 812 Superfast.
- 13:42Yes, those two cars are really, really good to compare.
- 13:47Well, I mean, as you go through this, here's where I was turned
- 13:50off by the article, right?
- 13:51So first car on the list, Ferrari 456, right?
- 13:54Or 456 GT.
- 13:56It's a GT car.
- 13:57It's a two plus two.
- 13:58There's certain requirements to be a GT car, right?
- 14:01Extended body, two doors, et cetera.
- 14:04And I think the 456 is an underappreciated car.
- 14:07I like the look of it.
- 14:09However, I'm a much bigger fan of the 550 Maranello.
- 14:12It's a much prettier car, you know, but it's, it's based on the 456 or it's
- 14:16an evolution of the 456, I should say.
- 14:19But when you scroll to the next one in the carousel, it's the C8 Corvette.
- 14:23When did a mid engine sports car become a grand tourer?
- 14:27How did that classification change?
- 14:28It makes absolutely no sense.
- 14:30And then they flip back and it's like, Oh, well, here's the bangle version
- 14:33of the M6, which it is a GT car.
- 14:36And I don't necessarily mind it with the right wheel package and
- 14:39body kit and things like that.
- 14:41But as you scroll, as you guys said, you scroll through this list.
- 14:43And it's like Bentley, Continental.
- 14:45GT convertible and I'm like, well, first of all, You know, it seems
- 14:50like a lot of these because the car has gt in the name Yeah, yeah, and
- 14:56then and then then there's a sedan.
- 14:58There's the rs7 What the hell I was like what I mean, so this list was a little
- 15:04bit all over the map But some of the rest of these, yes, the Aston Martin
- 15:08Vanquish, I'm like, the Rolls Royce Wraith, yeah, and the DBS Superleggera
- 15:13and like all this other stuff on the list.
- 15:15And I'm like, you know, the 928 quintessential GT
- 15:19car, yes, checks the box.
- 15:20Again, these are the cars I cared about, but they're also,
- 15:24you know, 30 years old, right?
- 15:25You start looking at the Jag and the Porsche and the Ferrari, and those
- 15:29were true GT Boulevard cruisers.
- 15:31But the 911?
- 15:33Like, 9 11's never been a GT car.
- 15:35But nowadays it is.
- 15:37It's gotten bigger, it's gotten fatter.
- 15:39I think people are considering the 9 11 the GT car, and the
- 15:43Cayman is the sports car now.
- 15:45But I gotta tip my hat to whoever the gray haired soul at Road Track that was writing
- 15:51this article that put in the E Type Jag.
- 15:54Because out of all the cars that are there, that's the best one.
- 15:57Hands down, if I, and that's the oldest one of the bunch, uh, in this
- 16:01group, I mean, granted, they had the hairdressers car in there, you know,
- 16:04the BMW 850 and all that kind of stuff, but having the E type was the right
- 16:08move on that list, but the rest of these modern ones, I think they could
- 16:12have separated this into modern GT cars versus classic GT cars because they
- 16:16just don't hold a candle to each other.
- 16:18Okay, so real quick, then let's just go through 1, 2, 3, what
- 16:22car on this list would you have?
- 16:23I would go with the 928.
- 16:25Tanya Mercedes sl, and I would take the lc.
- 16:30500 Lexus.
- 16:31Sounds like a plan.
- 16:32Hey, at least we've picked something off the list.
- 16:34So what's next?
- 16:35Vehicles that are out the door for 2021.
- 16:39So yeah, there's a few cars on here that I'm sure Tanya will
- 16:42be saddened to see go away.
- 16:44One of them being a carryover from last month's episode.
- 16:47The Chevrolet Impala.
- 16:49I know you're saddened to see that.
- 16:53I mean, when you look at it, it is not a bad looking car
- 16:57compared to previous versions.
- 16:58But yes, Chevrolet GM has finally decided that it is out the door.
- 17:02And along with it is the much loved Chevy Sonic.
- 17:06You know, we're all gonna miss that car.
- 17:09Sadder about that.
- 17:12Along with that, you know, a staple in many a large family's garage or
- 17:16driveway is the Dodge Grand Caravan.
- 17:18The Caravan is out in favor of the Pacifica and the base model Voyager.
- 17:23The Dodge Journey, which is actually a Fiat of some sort is also out the door.
- 17:29It should have been gone three years ago if you really read about it.
- 17:33But you know,
- 17:37it's true, but you know, they decided to keep that going for a while
- 17:41and that's okay now, sports car enthusiasts will be disappointed to
- 17:46know that the two door Hondas are out.
- 17:49They are following the trend of VW and there will be no more two door Hondas.
- 17:54So the Civic Coupe and the Civic Si two door are gone along with anything else
- 17:59that's got two doors from Honda, which isn't a whole lot of things, but your
- 18:03only option there is the, you know, four door Civic and the other cars.
- 18:06Along with that, the Honda Fit is out.
- 18:10The Lexus GS, the Lincoln Continental, which I thought was actually
- 18:15really disappointing because if you like a large Luxo boat, the
- 18:19Continental was a very striking car.
- 18:22I was really excited to see it come back a couple of years ago that they
- 18:25brought back that moniker again, really impressive car, great proportions.
- 18:30You know much better styling than the 300 and I'm a fan of the 300
- 18:34and I just think that the Lincoln is a really good looking car.
- 18:37I, I think they screwed up with the Continental that they
- 18:41didn't give it suicide doors.
- 18:43I think had they given it suicide doors it would still be around.
- 18:47Possibly sold a lot more.
- 18:48And I don't think they marketed it very well at the end of the day.
- 18:51At the same time, you know, it was inevitable that the Lincoln
- 18:54MKZ was out the door because as we know, the Mondeo has been retired.
- 18:59Sorry, for those of us on this side of the ocean, the Ford Fusion
- 19:03is gone and the Mark Z or the MKZ is built on that same platform.
- 19:07And so it's no shock that the MKZ is out the door.
- 19:10Now, the next one is one that.
- 19:11Mr.
- 19:12Khafeesi is going to be really saddened by this is true.
- 19:15The Mercedes SLC, SLK, the, the little kind of toad grasshopper Mercedes is gone.
- 19:20The, you know, the smallest convertible that I have, I can't say
- 19:25I'm going to miss the styling of it.
- 19:27It just, this last version is now what's interesting though, is that
- 19:31Mercedes is getting rid of this, but BMW just released the new Z4, right?
- 19:37Which is a direct competitor, right?
- 19:39Exactly.
- 19:39So maybe, maybe it'll be back.
- 19:42I don't know.
- 19:43Maybe they're just better off sticking to a slightly larger convertible.
- 19:46I've always felt that the SLK was a little too tight, but I agree.
- 19:52There's some others on the list.
- 19:54You know, the BMW, I ate the Alfa Romeo four C, which.
- 19:57You know, I've only seen three of those and they've only been at track events.
- 20:01You don't see them on the street.
- 20:03A couple of Acuras, you know, stuff like that.
- 20:05I think the only other one that I was kind of surprised to see go, and maybe it's
- 20:09because people are moving away from the subcompact market, is the Yaris or the
- 20:14Yaris, depending on how you pronounce it.
- 20:16I'm very disappointed because this means there is definitely no way that
- 20:21the GR Yaris make it across the shores.
- 20:28Looks cool.
- 20:29It does.
- 20:30And it also puts a very big question mark on next year's WRC series, which
- 20:35I'm the only follower of in this club.
- 20:37I think they are.
- 20:40Exactly.
- 20:41And so what are they going to campaign next year?
- 20:43The Corolla hatchback, because it's slightly larger, which that's probably it.
- 20:48But it gives way for Hyundai to run something bigger.
- 20:52It gives way for all the other manufacturers to run slightly
- 20:54larger cars because they had to stay within a certain size.
- 20:57And the Corolla is bigger than the Yaris.
- 21:00So it'll be interesting to see how that changes the WRC landscape next year.
- 21:04However, you'll probably still see the GRs or the Gazoo.
- 21:07Zoo racing Yares run in WRC two, where you still see the polos and a lot
- 21:13of the skoda's and the smaller cars or the older chassis cars are still
- 21:18running in that that subclass of WRC.
- 21:20So it'll be, it would be really cool to see what happens next year.
- 21:23So what are the chances that we can get a number of GTM members together?
- 21:27We go out, we all buy Toyota.
- 21:29Ours is, and we start our own little club series.
- 21:31Uh, zero.
- 21:34Yeah.
- 21:34Yeah.
- 21:35You guys have no, no imagination B spec racing for everybody.
- 21:40I think this would be more like D or E spec racing you're talking about.
- 21:44If you had the GR 57 true, true, true.
- 21:49Pretty good.
- 21:50All the broken axles you can ask for.
- 21:52But I'll put it to you this way.
- 21:53I'm waiting for the Alpha GTA to come, right?
- 21:55Which we saw at Salem's last year, which is the golf sized Alfa Romeo, which is
- 22:01rear wheel drive with a two liter turbo.
- 22:03And there's been rumors that it was coming to the U.
- 22:05S.
- 22:06And still haven't seen it yet, because believe me, I would line up for that car.
- 22:10So you can keep your Honda Fits and your Yaris's and your Fiestas,
- 22:13because if that Alpha comes, that's going to be the hot ticket.
- 22:16It's going to be a GTI killer.
- 22:17See, see what had happened was Fiat had their money in their savings
- 22:21account, and they got to transfer the monies over to the check ins account
- 22:24so they can move the Alphas over here.
- 22:27Yeah, but there was in the Cayman Islands, thanks to gm, so, you know, I
- 22:30know . But you know, it was funny that that article dropped about cars that
- 22:35are out for 2021 because WTOP, which is a local news station here in the,
- 22:39in the DMV, posted an article about a week later talking about the best
- 22:45cars for teens to pick up in 2020.
- 22:48And so, as I was, I was scrolling through this list.
- 22:51Cars like the Honda Fit and the Yaris are, are on this list.
- 22:54And I'm like.
- 22:55Yeah, but they're out the door, but it got me thinking when I was driving at
- 22:5916 years old, I was driving a 10 year old car and that seemed to be the thing.
- 23:04You bought something that was a decade old, 12 years old, maybe on the new
- 23:08side, eight years old, but I wasn't running out to the dealership and
- 23:11buying a brand new Corolla or a Honda.
- 23:14Or any of the cars that are on this list and they're all econo boxes,
- 23:17you know, except for, you know, let's say the exception of the Ford escape
- 23:21and the Kia Optima and some of these larger cars that are on this list.
- 23:25I don't know.
- 23:26I mean, I think about it with respect to my eldest daughter
- 23:29who, you know, she'll be 16.
- 23:31In 10 years.
- 23:32So the cars that are coming out now would be the cars that she
- 23:35might be driving at 10 years old.
- 23:37I don't know that I want to put her in any of these and any of the ones that are on
- 23:40this list, to be honest with you, because the price tag for a lot of these is, you
- 23:45know, best new SUV for teens at 35, 000.
- 23:49Nissan Rogue.
- 23:51I'm like, really?
- 23:51I'm gonna, I'm gonna go ahead and say it right now and people
- 23:54can flame me all they want.
- 23:56If you spend more than five grand on a car for your 16 year
- 23:59old kid, You're doing it wrong.
- 24:01You're doing it wrong.
- 24:02No, no, no, no.
- 24:02You're, you're, you're an effing idiot.
- 24:04I don't care what you say.
- 24:05You've lost all credibility to me.
- 24:08Yeah, I just can't see.
- 24:09I mean, I get it because you get the door to door warranty and all that
- 24:12kind of stuff or bumper to bumper warranty and all that kind of stuff.
- 24:15But I don't know.
- 24:16I wouldn't pick any of the cars on this list for my 16 year old right now.
- 24:20Looking back 10 years, let's just talk about that.
- 24:23Is there a car that you guys would pick as a recommendation for a
- 24:2616 year old starting out now?
- 24:27Kind of thinking about a car from 2010 that would be in that 000 range.
- 24:32Is there something that just pops out volkswagen rabbit or any volkswagen jetta?
- 24:38Honda, right?
- 24:39Yeah.
- 24:40I mean, there's a lot of options there that you could save a lot of money and
- 24:45those cars are still kicking strong.
- 24:46I mean, to your point, Brad, a mark five rabbit with a two
- 24:49and a half liter five cylinder.
- 24:51Those motors are bulletproof.
- 24:52They run forever.
- 24:54And, you know, simple to work on to compare to, to the, yeah, they're, they're
- 24:59German and they've got some, some little eccentricities to them, but they're
- 25:04still pretty damn simple to work on.
- 25:06The 2.
- 25:075 liters been around forever.
- 25:08The five cylinder, yeah.
- 25:09Exactly.
- 25:10And any of the old Hondas and even, I mean, let's face it, you could buy your
- 25:14kid an HHR, it would still be probably a better investment than a brand new
- 25:19Nissan Rogue or a Kia Optima, you know what I mean, at the end of the day,
- 25:23as much as I regret saying that you heard the words come out of my mouth,
- 25:26but, but you know what the people of today are doing, they're going out
- 25:31and they're buying their children.
- 25:32Those 65, 000 Bugatti electric cars.
- 25:36That's what they're doing.
- 25:37I forgot about that.
- 25:38You're right.
- 25:39They've already, they have a ton of practice.
- 25:42So realistically the Kia is a down step.
- 25:45It's a much cheaper vehicle than the all electric Bugatti that
- 25:48they've been driving around it.
- 25:49All right.
- 25:51All sarcasm aside, let's jump into our new section.
- 25:55We call.
- 25:56Jolt Cola
- 26:03Where we cover electric car news.
- 26:07Electric car and maybe electric adjacent, depending how you look at it.
- 26:12So the first one up here is a follow on article to the Sony Vision S.
- 26:18It's actually an original debut of this back in the beginning of the year, in
- 26:22January, and then there's been more developments recently on what this is.
- 26:26Prototype vehicle from, yes, Sony, as in, you know, Sony Electronics,
- 26:33creating an EV for the modern day.
- 26:36So, the Vision S According to the Car and Driver article,
- 26:39it's equipped with 33 sensors.
- 26:42It's got LiDAR, radar, cameras, you name it.
- 26:45It's got a 360 degree immersive audio system.
- 26:50It's got a panoramic screen that stretches across the entire dashboard.
- 26:54There's no mention of a PS5.
- 26:56It's going to be installed in it, but, but granted the PS5 isn't out yet.
- 27:00So there's still time.
- 27:01Right.
- 27:01So, I mean, really what's the deal here.
- 27:03This came out as a surprise, basically unveiling at the consumer electronics
- 27:08show and people thought they were, I think, going to go see news about
- 27:13a PlayStation five and instead they unveiled this vision as vehicle.
- 27:17So in terms of specs, it's on an all wheel drive platform, which
- 27:21isn't surprising because apparently there is some collaboration with.
- 27:25The Austrian Company, Magna Steyr, who back in the day created the
- 27:31four wheel drive system on the Mercedes G Class and whatnot.
- 27:34The car alleges a top speed of 149 miles an hour, a 0 60 in 4.
- 27:398 seconds.
- 27:40It weighs a honking 5, 180 pounds.
- 27:45I'm, I'm guessing those sensors are really heavy, along with that 360 sound system.
- 27:52At the end of the day, it's really unclear.
- 27:54Nobody's sure why Sony is doing this.
- 27:56Uh, I would suspect, personally, that it's more about the technology and what they
- 28:01can bring to cars versus the car itself.
- 28:04They're just, the car is the platform to display all their fancy gadgetry in it.
- 28:08It's not an unattractive vehicle, but it's very similar looking to a Tesla.
- 28:13So I'm going to throw in my two cents here.
- 28:15If we have any it people listening, this is equivalent to the Sony VIO laptops
- 28:21of the early two thousands, right?
- 28:23They brought nothing to the market other than some flash and
- 28:27panache and Sony specific things.
- 28:30But otherwise it was just a Toshiba laptop, like anything else.
- 28:33And I think that's exactly the point that you're making here.
- 28:36There's these Sony electronic proprietary things that they
- 28:39want to bring to the show.
- 28:41And it might be a rebadged car from somebody else because I don't think Sony's
- 28:44got the tooling to create a car, right?
- 28:48It just, that's why they were, that's why they've been.
- 28:51It seems with some people that actually know how to build cars.
- 28:55Yeah for that development for the chassis work, etc So i'm thinking
- 29:00this car is not I mean, I know it was displayed At the consumer electronics
- 29:05show, but maybe it's not directed at us.
- 29:07Maybe it's directed at other auto manufacturers I just
- 29:11changed the stereo in my truck.
- 29:13It's a Panasonic.
- 29:14Maybe they're trying to steal some of that business and sell to the manufacturers.
- 29:18Look at all these cool things that we can put into your car.
- 29:21I just want to know if I can buy a Sony Vision S at Best Buy.
- 29:24Because it's the only place I can figure out is where I would be able to get one.
- 29:28How many reward zone points do I get when I buy it?
- 29:33You'll be able to buy a PS five for free.
- 29:36You better.
- 29:38Yeah.
- 29:38You better believe it.
- 29:39That's like the demon package, right?
- 29:40For an extra dollar, you get a PS five in the trunk.
- 29:46It clip with project cars three.
- 29:48All right, Tanya, what else you got on the list?
- 29:50So the next one is maybe.
- 29:52Electric adjacent.
- 29:54I mean, not really because it's it's a hydrogen vehicle and hydrogen is
- 29:57used to power an electric motor.
- 29:58So it's still.
- 29:59Hydrogen fuel cell powered cars are still considered EVs.
- 30:03This article again comes from Car and Driver and it's about the
- 30:06Hyperion XP 1, which is a 221 mile an hour hydrogen powered hyper car.
- 30:13So just as a little background here for folks who have not heard of Hyperion,
- 30:17this is straight from their website.
- 30:18They were founded in 2011 by an expert team of PhDs.
- 30:22Hyperion is a technology company that consists of three divisions,
- 30:25Hyperion Energy, Hyperion Motors, and Hyperion Aerospace.
- 30:29All focused on hydrogen based power and delivery.
- 30:33They're based in Orange, California.
- 30:35Hyperion delivers cutting edge space technology, pioneered
- 30:38by NASA, to the world.
- 30:39From road vehicles to space travel, Hyperion seeks to completely
- 30:42revolutionize the transportation industry by offering convenient,
- 30:46high quality, low cost solutions.
- 30:48Hydrogen fuel across America.
- 30:50And as a quote from the CEO, there are enough car companies or an energy company
- 30:55that's building this car to tell a story.
- 30:57So again, it's, it's a little bit less about the actual car, just
- 31:01super futuristic looking and, you know, hypercar looking, but it's
- 31:04more about the power plant, the fuel cell technology using the hydrogen.
- 31:09So what it's all about, they're claiming zero to 60 in 2.
- 31:142 seconds.
- 31:15a top speed of 221 miles an hour with a range of Just over 1, 000 miles,
- 31:22granted, I'm sure that's not at 221 miles an hour, but nonetheless, it's
- 31:27also a carbon titanium monocoque chassis and unlike the Vision S, the
- 31:32curb weight is around 2, 200 pounds.
- 31:35It's very lightweight.
- 31:37Further on with the spec, so it's not out yet.
- 31:40So they've got their, their prototype here, but it's slated
- 31:44to go into production in 2022.
- 31:47So it's still two years out.
- 31:48It's going to be very limited run, apparently only 300 cars.
- 31:51Um, it will be an all wheel drive setup and we'll have a three speed
- 31:56transmission with ultra capacitors to buffer the output of the fuel cell.
- 32:01The body also includes active aero elements that double as solar panels.
- 32:05The double barrel exhaust stacks are functional, but all that comes
- 32:09out is deionized water vapor.
- 32:11So that is straight from the car and driver article.
- 32:14Does it play engine sounds in the interior like the BMWs?
- 32:18There was no mention of that.
- 32:20I thought the Hyperion was the shuttle that they used, the
- 32:24big space station in Andromeda.
- 32:26I thought that was Yeah, I think so.
- 32:28That was the Hyperion.
- 32:29But my other question is, how big is the Frunk and does it
- 32:33stay closed at 200 miles an hour?
- 32:35They did not mention
- 32:45it.
- 32:45You say hydrogen, usually people just go with Hindenburg.
- 32:51So now because of this disaster, everyone thinks hydrogen is going to be
- 32:54a gigantic death Trap, and there's tons of conspiracy theories, I guess, around
- 32:59questioning of what really happened.
- 33:01Was it sabotage?
- 33:02Was it Hitler ordered it to be, you know, exploded, etc, etc.
- 33:07Or did just something go wrong, right?
- 33:09And a spark ensued and the hydrogen exploded, or, you know, caught on fire.
- 33:13As it will, because it's very flammable.
- 33:15So, Hyperion, obviously, they have to address this, because it's going
- 33:19to be a big concern to people.
- 33:21I'm driving around Hindenburg, right?
- 33:23And they said, quote, You can throw our tanks off a building or shoot
- 33:27them with a high powered rifle.
- 33:28They won't rupture.
- 33:29They're seemingly with their PhDs and their NASA friends are spending
- 33:33a lot of time trying to develop the fuel tank to be safe and what it is
- 33:37apparently is carbon fiber construction.
- 33:40So I would guess that they're probably pretty thick tanks and carbon fiber.
- 33:43Anything generally isn't.
- 33:45necessarily cost effective, so that's definitely one thing they still need
- 33:49to tackle is how do we make, you know, that strength, but also cost effective
- 33:54for mass production into into vehicles.
- 33:56I think that they can crack that nut and get the affordability down.
- 34:00They've got something interesting.
- 34:01So, you know, someone might say, still be stuck on.
- 34:09I mean, I could see the rebuttal to that because it's, it's the challenger effect
- 34:12and I'm not talking about the dodge.
- 34:13I'm talking about the space shuttle where, you know, it
- 34:16wasn't this that or the other.
- 34:18It was an O ring.
- 34:19It was a coupler.
- 34:20It was whatever.
- 34:20It's something else in the system.
- 34:23That then causes a cascading failure, right?
- 34:25And so I think hydrogen being so volatile, and it does have a stigma.
- 34:29Unfortunately, thanks to thanks to the Hindenburg, much like diesel has a stigma.
- 34:33Rotaries have a stigma.
- 34:34Every engine type has its own problem.
- 34:37And, you know, ICEs or internal combustion engines have been have outlasted the rest
- 34:42of them, because at the end of the day.
- 34:44Even that is a controlled explosion, but it's the safest
- 34:48of its alternatives, right?
- 34:49So I'm a little bit apprehensive of hydrogen as well.
- 34:52And I think maybe a lot of our listeners would probably be disappointed because,
- 34:57you know, if something did come out, it's kind of like the early adopters
- 35:00of Tesla's are all electric vehicles.
- 35:02It's like, well, where am I going to get the fuel?
- 35:04You know, how does that work?
- 35:06What's the distribution network?
- 35:08Well, I'll address two things there.
- 35:10First, the volatile comment.
- 35:11is somewhat misleading because it's volatile in so much that oxygen is
- 35:16present, and a f ignition source.
- 35:19So, again, I mean, you can have as much hydrogen sitting open here,
- 35:23and as long as nobody lights a match, nothing's gonna happen.
- 35:27Granted, electrostatic issues could cause It's, you know, maybe it's a
- 35:33catch on fire, that's actually one thing that they think happened with
- 35:36the Hindenburg, there might have been some electrostatic stuff going on.
- 35:40They did, like, they did have a leak, but then electrostatic.
- 35:44Cause the spark and then everything caught on fire, but I mean, I think
- 35:48if they can get, if they can seal the hydrogen off, if the system sealed
- 35:51off well, I mean, there's risk.
- 35:54I think the risk can probably be mitigated.
- 35:56I mean, it's no different than anything else necessarily catching on fire.
- 36:00But the thing is, this isn't the first hydrogen vehicle.
- 36:04No, I mean, Honda, Honda.
- 36:06I'm looking at it right now.
- 36:07Honda offers.
- 36:08Yeah, Honda has the clarity.
- 36:10It's a hydrogen powered car.
- 36:12Chevrolet back in with the early 90s came out with a hydrogen fuel cell.
- 36:16BMW had a prototype.
- 36:17I mean, there's been a several attempts at this before.
- 36:20I mean, the Toyota has one right now.
- 36:22I think part of their, I don't think they're displaying the
- 36:24range that this is displaying.
- 36:26So I think this is actually a huge significant improvement to the
- 36:30technology and they're trying to make improvements to the safety to make
- 36:33people, you know, feel more secure.
- 36:36Additionally, to address the other point you brought up around fueling,
- 36:40this company is also trying to set up a network of hydrogen fueling stations.
- 36:44And what they're saying is given the range, you need far less.
- 36:49hydrogen fueling stations because you're going to be go you're
- 36:51going to get to go farther.
- 36:52Yeah, so I got to drive to Rhode Atlanta to get to Dakota.
- 36:57So that's how I'm going to get fuel, right?
- 36:58I mean, that doesn't make sense.
- 36:59That's not a good way to do it because that's not the paths that people travel.
- 37:03And now you're forcing traffic to go a specific way because the only way
- 37:07you can get your fuel source from.
- 37:09I can't fill up at home.
- 37:10I can't fill up outside of sheets.
- 37:12I, you know, that that's kind of a weird way to do it.
- 37:14And I, I don't know, I don't, I don't buy that.
- 37:16I mean, same things with electric cars and where you plug it in.
- 37:23Yeah.
- 37:23At any rate, I think I'm interested to see where they develop the technology.
- 37:27Sure.
- 37:28I find it interesting.
- 37:29It's much more environmentally friendly in terms of emissions
- 37:33than your standard ice engine.
- 37:34There's arguments to be had around, well, how are you making the hydrogen?
- 37:38It'll be interesting to see what they come up with if they're actually able
- 37:40to produce those 300 cars in two years.
- 37:42So what's next Tanya?
- 37:44So the next one on the list is the.
- 37:47Cadillac unveiling of their new electric SUV, supposed to be their
- 37:53flagship, I think, electric SUV model.
- 37:56And it is called The Escalade.
- 37:58It is called the Lyric.
- 38:02Now there's some debate around the pronunciation of it.
- 38:05Lyric.
- 38:07It's spelled L Y R I Q.
- 38:10So, you know people are going to be confused on how to pronounce it when
- 38:14you try to Wikipedia it and they don't give you any pronunciation for it.
- 38:17I was further confused when I saw Cadillac was actually
- 38:21showing it all capital letters.
- 38:24Then I was wondering what it could possibly stand for.
- 38:27I didn't come up with anything good.
- 38:29So I, I was trying harder to peruse the, the origins of this name.
- 38:33So I did find on GM authority website, um, they have a old blog there and
- 38:40they were explaining the origin.
- 38:42So apparently the IQ is going to be the new suffix, basically, I
- 38:47think for all their electric cars.
- 38:49What it says is, additionally, the IQ suffix names provide a sort of.
- 38:54alteration of sorts for Cadillac brand cars.
- 38:58With Cadillac and the model name both ending in an ick sound, these
- 39:03names roll off the tongue quite well.
- 39:06I didn't realize it was a Cadillac.
- 39:09It's a Cadillac, but.
- 39:13So is the next one going to be called the brick?
- 39:15B R I Q.
- 39:17And then there's the stick.
- 39:18The trick.
- 39:20The flick.
- 39:21The lick.
- 39:22We asked about the escal Escaladic.
- 39:27Um, this is terrible.
- 39:29What are they thinking?
- 39:30Apparently there's a celestic.
- 39:32I didn't know that.
- 39:33Is that made by, is that made by Stellantis?
- 39:36I don't know, but feel better that it's, it's two years out.
- 39:40So maybe, maybe they'll go with the whole naming convention change.
- 39:45They've got plenty of time to make it worse now.
- 39:47Yes.
- 39:49Either way, it's 50 50 right now.
- 39:52But that brings up a good point.
- 39:53Have you seen the back of this thing?
- 39:55From the side, it reminded me of a smushed Range Rover.
- 40:00And from the back, it looks like a car I saw in the junkyard.
- 40:03Like, it was rear ended by a semi.
- 40:07Like, what were they thinking?
- 40:09The front looks like all the other Cadillacs that are out there right now.
- 40:12They all share the same nose.
- 40:14But it's like, do the engineers run out of pencils?
- 40:17Like, can I buy you all, like, refillable mechanical pencils so
- 40:21you can finish the back of the car?
- 40:23Like, what is going on these days?
- 40:26So according to advertisers, Cadillac, it's designed to energize your senses.
- 40:33Yeah, it makes me angry.
- 40:37With the introduction of Cadillac's new design language, the Lyric, Showcar brings
- 40:43the sensual and the technical together.
- 40:47It's the Vibric.
- 40:48Decisive graphic elements contrast against fluid form.
- 40:53The full glass two tone roof subtly slopes creating a fast profile
- 40:58while choreographed lighting and iridescent colors engage the senses.
- 41:03This is effortless design with a magnetic draw.
- 41:07I think I threw up in the back of my throat a little bit.
- 41:10I mean, that is the, this is like mad men level of advertising here.
- 41:14Because any sensical human that looks at that design goes, that
- 41:18car has no space in the trunk.
- 41:21I, I don't know.
- 41:23I'm curious to see it in person.
- 41:24Maybe it's like the Mach E.
- 41:26and some of these other new cars where they look better in person,
- 41:29but the photos do not do that.
- 41:31Lyric, and I'm going to stick with that as the pronunciation, it
- 41:34doesn't do it any justice whatsoever.
- 41:37Maybe it doesn't need a large back side because it has a frunk.
- 41:42Oh, that makes sense.
- 41:44All right.
- 41:45There really wasn't much other.
- 41:46It does have 19 speakers in it and active noise cancellation and 23 inch wheels.
- 41:52Are they Sony speakers?
- 41:54I don't know, but maybe.
- 41:55And if you got rid of the 23 inch wheels, it would look like a Volvo V70 or V90.
- 42:01It would be a regular wagon.
- 42:03Come on now.
- 42:03It's six inches taller because of the stupid wheels.
- 42:07Yeah, it's true.
- 42:08Ground clearance by way of diameter.
- 42:11All right.
- 42:11So what else?
- 42:12Oh, goodness.
- 42:14There was an article about the revolutionary Tesla windshield.
- 42:18That's going to, I guess, possibly debut on the cyber truck.
- 42:21So revolutionary is usually cool till it breaks in my opinion.
- 42:27And there's just something about.
- 42:29Tried and true, simple technology that just functions when you need it.
- 42:34I mean, I see this and then I painfully remember these heinous
- 42:40telecom phones that we use in some of our conference rooms at work.
- 42:44And they're modern and they're fancy and they have a touch
- 42:46keypad that's completely flat.
- 42:48Ooh, they look so nice.
- 42:50And guess what?
- 42:51It's a gigantic piece of crack that doesn't work, alright?
- 42:54Like, you gotta press the button, the button in quotes, like, super hard
- 42:59and in the exact right spot, and then it still doesn't register that you're
- 43:02pushing the button, so then you're just pounding on the darn thing.
- 43:06You know what, what hardly ever fails?
- 43:09A friggin raised button on the telephone.
- 43:12Okay, those things have lasted through the decades, okay?
- 43:16There's something to be said for certain technology.
- 43:18I don't, I don't know that it was a technology that needed to be reinvented.
- 43:23It was, it's literally like reinventing the wheel.
- 43:25So I read this article too, and God bless the guy that wrote it, and
- 43:29he threw the whole schematic with the patent and everything in there.
- 43:33It was very well written and I understood and when I got to the bottom and I
- 43:37really stepped back and I looked at it, if anyone has ever watched the videos
- 43:41on YouTube about how the inside of an Etch A Sketch works, it is identical.
- 43:47It uses a similar weird pulley axial system to move these blades around and the
- 43:53reason it makes sense on the Cybertruck is because the glass is completely flat.
- 43:57So you're trying to wipe A non curved surface.
- 44:01So it's like trying to wipe down a blackboard, right?
- 44:03Or an Etch A Sketch screen.
- 44:05It's the same idea.
- 44:06So, again, to your point, simplicity, a regular wiper system because of the
- 44:10springs and everything else and the way that the wipers are now squeegees,
- 44:14it would work on a Cybertruck.
- 44:15They do not need to reinvent the wiper blades.
- 44:18I'm concerned and I haven't used very many single bladed vehicles before.
- 44:24I know they exist, but Mercedes.
- 44:26The article talked about it being a single wiper.
- 44:29So you have a single wiper just moving across the windscreen.
- 44:32If this thing isn't moving fast enough, I mean, on a regular car, with two wipers.
- 44:38You're partially blinded by water because when it's on the down wipe,
- 44:43you suddenly have several seconds of rain flooding your windshield.
- 44:46Now, if this arm is over doing its thing on the other side of the car
- 44:48and the passenger's Six feet away.
- 44:50Like, I'm super blind.
- 44:52Like, a really large portion of the windshield.
- 44:55I mean, maybe it's the same as regular two wiper blades?
- 44:59I don't know.
- 45:00Maybe with autopilot, you don't need to worry about it because the GPS is going to
- 45:04drive you where you need to go, regardless of the weather conditions, right?
- 45:07I have to say, I'm kind of disappointed.
- 45:09I was expecting more from Tesla.
- 45:11Have you ever seen Demolition Man?
- 45:14Mm hmm.
- 45:14And you've seen the part where that little Spray can pops up out of the
- 45:18dirt and sprays the the graffiti on the sign And then like another one comes up
- 45:24and sprays a laser and gets rid of it I think tesla needs to use that technology
- 45:29so it zaps the rain away with these little lasers and shit I think that's
- 45:32what I would be expecting from tesla.
- 45:34I hate to say if you leave it up to tesla I think we'll all be
- 45:36wiping our butts with seashells.
- 45:38But you know, let's leave that where it is Since we're talking about
- 45:41demolition, man, it doesn't really matter because people are going to
- 45:43throw rocks at your cyber truck and all the windows are going to break because
- 45:47they're not made of bulletproof glass.
- 45:49True.
- 45:49And there's a video out there I recently watched about how strong old car glass is.
- 45:54I saw it too with Volkswagen.
- 45:56Yeah.
- 45:56And guys are throwing high speed baseballs at the glass
- 45:59repeatedly and it will not break.
- 46:01He essentially had to take a sledgehammer.
- 46:03To, to hit it, and you had to hit it hard, too, because it kept bouncing off.
- 46:07Yeah, and that was a car from 20 years ago.
- 46:08To that, uh, second reason that this could possibly only ever work, because first, it
- 46:13needs the flat windshield, which history has told auto manufacturers that doesn't
- 46:18work because insects can break the glass at high speed because it's more fragile.
- 46:23So, the Cybertruck's got the flat windscreen, allegedly, but it also has the
- 46:29Tesla armor glass that is indestructible.
- 46:33So maybe it requires those two things to work.
- 46:36Is that like the armor glass that I put on my cell phone that
- 46:39after I drop my cell phone on the ground, it still breaks anyway?
- 46:42I, you know, it's that same armor glass.
- 46:44So when he threw the ball at the cyber truck on display, the glass shattered.
- 46:49I've got a great idea for Tesla.
- 46:51Use a normal windscreen.
- 46:53It works.
- 46:54Companies have been doing it for you forever.
- 46:56Well, the reason they're doing this.
- 46:58is to reduce draw that the wiper motor would pull on the batteries.
- 47:03They're reducing draw, they're reducing customer draw.
- 47:07Yeah, that, that Cybertruck is a discussion for another day.
- 47:10But since we're talking about Teslas and wiper blades, just as an aside, you
- 47:15know, to make matters worse, if the new Cybertruck's Etch a Sketch wiper blades
- 47:19require you to use the tablet dashboard to activate them like a gentleman in
- 47:24Germany did in his Tesla 3, you may.
- 47:28with a citation, or if you live in Germany, you could get a one month
- 47:33suspension after crashing your vehicle because you were tapping
- 47:38on your screen repeatedly as to get your wiper blades working.
- 47:41So yeah, again, what's wrong with the lever on the stock on the steering column?
- 47:47I don't know.
- 47:48I call BS.
- 47:49I think that guy was playing Fruit Ninja.
- 47:51And that's why he got in trouble.
- 47:55Anyway, so electric cars.
- 47:57Sometimes they get them right, sometimes they don't.
- 48:00But I think we got one here that actually defies expectations.
- 48:04If only it ever were to come true, which it is not going to.
- 48:07So there was a grassroots.
- 48:11This is a Motorsport article about an electric Trabant.
- 48:15So for the listeners that don't know what a Trabant is, it is a
- 48:20very old, very square, very square East German car that actually I
- 48:27guess was in production until 1990.
- 48:29Yeah.
- 48:30Apparently, so from 1957 to 1990.
- 48:32The flagship of the Soviet Union.
- 48:35It was an amazing little vehicle.
- 48:37It was, you know, the simplicity vehicle.
- 48:40It was, it was, interestingly, I learned a fun fact, made of plastic.
- 48:46I did not know that.
- 48:47So, Duraplast, composite thermosetting plastic.
- 48:51Similar to Formica.
- 48:52Okay, it's a kitchen counter with wheels.
- 48:54Sounds cool.
- 48:55It looked like a kitchen counter with wheels.
- 48:59Uh, I mean, yes.
- 49:00The body lines are very simple.
- 49:02I thought it was also interesting that pretty much, I guess, close to 1990, 1989,
- 49:08they got the rights to use a Volkswagen engine in them, so that was, I guess,
- 49:13sadly short lived for about a year.
- 49:15But anyway, somebody And this actually was already probably about 10 years
- 49:20ago, tried to revive the Travanc.
- 49:24Some investors wanted to bring it back into modern days, so kind of a retro redo.
- 49:29And then I mean, it has that pedigree and that desire and that passion that only.
- 49:35A true enthusiast could enjoy and if you have racing heritage Oh, yeah, and if you
- 49:40had 50 extra rubles, you would upgrade to a Lada, you know a copy of a fiat 128
- 49:46But anyway continue I mean Nonetheless,
- 50:00so I think in 2012 the investors then tried to come up with this trabant
- 50:05NT version which allegedly I guess would have had a little battery inside
- 50:09of it to give it 100 miles of range.
- 50:11I'm not sure where you were going with your little Trabant, but nonetheless,
- 50:14they didn't get the backing for this.
- 50:16So, you know, that was already a while ago.
- 50:18So it was kind of reposted as a, Oh, Hey, what would you think about
- 50:21this in today's burgeoning EV world?
- 50:25Is there a home for an electric Trabant or not?
- 50:29So I read the article and I looked at the renderings.
- 50:31I like it.
- 50:32And to your point before you kind of, you're on the same wave link
- 50:36that I'm on, which is, it looks like a sedan version of a mini, and
- 50:41it wasn't a hateful looking car.
- 50:43I could see the throwbacks to the reon, although, I mean, anything is better.
- 50:47Any design is better than the original trant.
- 50:50So you, your leaps and bounds ahead of that.
- 50:52But it wasn't an unattractive car and I could see its relevance in the world.
- 50:56It's just a matter of getting it out.
- 50:59Getting it out there.
- 50:59Right?
- 51:00I mean, the design fits in this.
- 51:03Cutesy Ev Futurey design that a lot of people are coming up with.
- 51:09I mean, it's right up there with the Gary Busey and all the ones we
- 51:11talked about on the last episode.
- 51:13Right, exactly.
- 51:14So I mean, it could have a home next to your eBuy.
- 51:17A hundred percent.
- 51:18Maybe you could even, like, drive it up into the back of the
- 51:21flatbed version of the eBus y.
- 51:23Nice.
- 51:24So you're Tramont with your eBus y.
- 51:25Perfect.
- 51:26Not bad, though.
- 51:26Not bad, though.
- 51:27And it'd probably be cheap.
- 51:28Probably still made of plastic, though.
- 51:30But now I think it's time to make some donuts.
- 51:33It's time to go behind the pit wall and talk about some motorsport news.
- 51:38So in local news for the listeners out there, we have 20 events left on
- 51:43the CHIN schedule for 2020 and a big shout out to Mark Hicks for coming
- 51:47on Break Fix earlier this month.
- 51:49If you haven't listened to that episode, we get behind the scenes with Mark
- 51:52and talk about the origin of CHIN and everything that goes along with
- 51:56that so you can get more familiar and better acquainted with their program
- 51:59and the peculiarities of what they do.
- 52:02Meanwhile, Hooked on Driving Northeast still has three
- 52:05events left on their schedule.
- 52:07NJMP Lightning in September, a newly added VIR date in the middle of October,
- 52:13which happens to be a week before their fall finale at Watkins Glen,
- 52:17which is closer to the end of October.
- 52:19A reminder to all the folks in DMV and surrounding states, Always check
- 52:25the latest COVID and health updates because many states are still not
- 52:30able to travel to New York I know there's rules about oh, well if you're
- 52:34going to be there for a week or two or whatever But places like Watkins
- 52:38Glen are still turning away drivers because they are checking licenses.
- 52:42And if you are from one of the states that is basically on the no
- 52:45fly list, you will be turned away.
- 52:47So don't waste your time.
- 52:49Do your research ahead of time before going out to places like Watkins Glen,
- 52:53Lime Rock and JMP, et cetera, to make sure it's okay for you to go there.
- 52:57Meanwhile, SCCA still has a couple of events left basically around summit point.
- 53:02Uh, at Shenandoah, as well as over at Dominion down in Fredericksburg,
- 53:07and the Audi club has their fall finale at VIR in November.
- 53:11I'm sure there's other groups out there, you know, track days
- 53:14and, and Porsche club, etc.
- 53:16We don't dive into everybody's schedules, so be sure to check
- 53:18Motorsport Reg for all the dates and locations as those are changing as
- 53:23we get here closer into the fall.
- 53:25And then obviously everybody, you know, stay safe, wear
- 53:27your mask, social distance.
- 53:29All that kind of stuff that is being enforced at the track.
- 53:32So don't forget your mask when you're out there, things of that nature on the
- 53:35brighter side, things we get to look forward to in 2021 and beyond officials
- 53:40are now promoting a new track and it's actually not going to be that far away.
- 53:45We're talking about seven hours, maybe less depending on how
- 53:48fast you tow from the DC area.
- 53:51It's going to be in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
- 53:53Many of you probably don't know about Oak Ridge unless you're
- 53:55familiar with Oak Ridge Labs nestled between Chattanooga and Knoxville.
- 54:00Basically, they're on the eastern edge of Tennessee, and the track is
- 54:04going to be built on a 330 acre plot housing a five mile racing circuit.
- 54:11With 20 turns, I've looked at the maps and we're going to post a
- 54:15link to it so you can check it out.
- 54:17The course layout looks really cool and I'm super excited
- 54:21that they're going to do this.
- 54:22Apparently they have all the approvals.
- 54:24The land that it's being built on has basically been
- 54:26abandoned for about 25 years.
- 54:29Nobody wants to develop there.
- 54:30Nobody wants to do anything in that surrounding area.
- 54:32So they've gotten permission to build a racetrack and I hope we
- 54:36get to go there when it opens.
- 54:37Brad, some world news.
- 54:39So, F1, you know, that series that we all like to either watch or sleep
- 54:45during, has decided that they will not be coming to the Americas, North or South
- 54:51America, at all during the 2020 season.
- 54:54Thanks to COVID, they are not going to be traveling on this side of the pond.
- 54:58Instead, they're going to replace the U.
- 55:00S.
- 55:00Grand Prix, the Mexican Grand Prix, and the Brazilian Grand Prix.
- 55:04With three new races in Europe, they're going to be doing the Nürburgring
- 55:08Grand Prix circuit, which they haven't had a race there since 2013.
- 55:12They're also going to be doing Imola and Portima.
- 55:15So for all those listeners that were looking forward to going to a Grand
- 55:18Prix this year, you better get your plane tickets to go across the ocean,
- 55:22because you're not going to be able to on this side of the Atlantic.
- 55:25And then the next story I'm going to talk about is less about news and more just
- 55:29something that's kind of interesting.
- 55:31So I'm going to ask a question.
- 55:32What is the best color in motorsports?
- 55:35Black.
- 55:36Well, you would say black.
- 55:38Manufacturers would say bright colors that help them sell their cars, you
- 55:41know, liveries and things like that.
- 55:43Drivers would say the checkered flag, black and white.
- 55:46But manufacturers, they say, and team coaches and team
- 55:49principals, it's the gray.
- 55:52The gray color, the gray area between the rule books and cheating.
- 55:55Oh, man.
- 55:58So in light of the, the recent events with force India, uh, and the, the, the
- 56:04cheating, the alleged cheating going on with their team, they've got all kinds
- 56:10of, you know, investigations going on, or we're going to talk about a couple of.
- 56:15Stories from history in the motor sports world where teens, you know,
- 56:19cheated, got away with it for a little bit, you know, had a lot
- 56:22of success until they got caught.
- 56:25So the first one Eric might know about.
- 56:27Does it start with Lotus?
- 56:28I'm so excited.
- 56:29No, it does not start with Lotus.
- 56:31It actually starts with a Toyota Celica.
- 56:34Back in, back in 1995, the World Rally Championship, so I figured
- 56:38you might know about this one.
- 56:40The World Rally Championship authorities said the drivers and said that the
- 56:44cars had to have restrictor plates.
- 56:46Well, Toyota manufactured these, these little spring mechanisms that,
- 56:52while under load, they would push the restrictor plates open just enough to
- 56:56get a little additional air through.
- 56:58But then, you know, coming off throttle and coming back into the pits after,
- 57:03after the racing or whatever, the, the pressure would be taken off the springs,
- 57:07or they could take the pressure off the springs and the restrictor plate
- 57:10would go back into the legal limits.
- 57:14The next story is about a NASCAR and Unic.
- 57:22His car is HAHAHAHAHA You were what was that again?
- 57:28His name, his name is Smokey Unic.
- 57:33You gotta be kidding me, right?
- 57:35No, it's brilliant.
- 57:37It's not spelled like you would spell eunuch.
- 57:39It's Y U N I C.
- 57:41But anyway, he got his cars, he got his cars from Chevrolet.
- 57:45He drove a Chevy Chevelle, uh, in the 67 and 68 NASCAR series.
- 57:50But he did all kinds of little things to his car to make it kind of
- 57:54questionable, whether it was legal or not.
- 57:56He had the bottom undercarriage smoothed, so it didn't have all the
- 58:00little imperfections and everything.
- 58:02So it made it more slippery.
- 58:03He had a tube frame welded completely to the frame of the car.
- 58:07So it was kind of, I guess the first, you know, uh, yeah, the first integrated
- 58:11version of the, the tube frame chassis.
- 58:14Uh, he had the chrome front bumper was deepened to act as an air dam.
- 58:18He had the rain gutters and the glass gutters and glass trim and
- 58:21everything were made to be flush with the rest of the body of the car.
- 58:25So really there was nowhere for the air to go but around it.
- 58:28It just, it made the car super slippery and super fast.
- 58:32And NASCAR caught him and then he was in trouble.
- 58:35But I think my favorite parts about this story.
- 58:38And not his name, Smokey Eunuch, because that is just amazing.
- 58:43My favorite part about this story was the fuel tank.
- 58:46So he got in trouble for the fuel tank.
- 58:48I guess he was carrying too much fuel and NASCAR took the fuel tank out
- 58:52of the car to inspect it further.
- 58:55While the fuel tank was removed from the car, he was able to start it and drive
- 58:59it Back to his pit because apparently he used thicker than usual fuel lines.
- 59:06So they held up to, they held up to two to five gallons more fuel, which allowed him
- 59:13to have fewer pit stops and everything.
- 59:15So that's my favorite part.
- 59:17A quote from his autobiography.
- 59:20Somebody asked him, was this car a cheater, Smokey?
- 59:22And he said, you're goddamn right.
- 59:24It was.
- 59:28That's awesome.
- 59:29Honesty to the very end.
- 59:32So moving on to Formula 1, which we touched on earlier.
- 59:35Red Bull racing flirted with the gray area and racing a little bit
- 59:39back in 2011 to 2014, where they had that front wing on the RB seven cars.
- 59:45Now, these are the cars that Sebastian Vettel drove during his four time
- 59:49championships with the team and the RB seven car had a flexible.
- 59:53front wing.
- 59:55So what this means is it, you know, paddock speeds and driving around, you
- 59:59know, for inspection and everything, the wing was in one, one position.
- 1:00:03It was, you know, a certain height above the road as was legal by, uh, the F FIA,
- 1:00:08uh, you know, regulations, but it's speed.
- 1:00:11The wing would get closer to the ground.
- 1:00:14Which would allow the car to, I guess, handle better, the aerodynamics were
- 1:00:17better, it would be faster, and this gave, you know, Red Bull an advantage,
- 1:00:22you know, and then eventually they got caught, uh, and then therefore
- 1:00:25they got penalized, and, and the wing was deemed to be, uh, not valid.
- 1:00:29Moving on, you know, uh, Formula One, again, uh, back in 1981, this
- 1:00:35is with the Brabham BT49C, they had hydro pneumatic suspension.
- 1:00:40It was suspension that was half filled with air.
- 1:00:43And half filled with hydraulic fluid.
- 1:00:46So what it would do is driving around the paddock and everything.
- 1:00:48It was just normal ride height.
- 1:00:49Once the car was up to speed, the aerodynamic downforce provided by the
- 1:00:52front and rear wings would push down the body, expelling just enough of
- 1:00:57the cylinders contents to the central reservoir, thereby lowering the right
- 1:01:01height, the car would remain in its lowered state until the end of the race.
- 1:01:05And then once you were coming back into the paddock, all that,
- 1:01:08you know, the contents would.
- 1:01:09Go back to the suspension, raising the ride height again,
- 1:01:13back to the legal limit.
- 1:01:14You know, this was when, uh, when PK won the championship, he won in 1981.
- 1:01:18He was caught, they were caught halfway through the season.
- 1:01:22Uh, and then essentially they lost their advantage because other teams
- 1:01:24were like, Hey, we can do that too.
- 1:01:26And they started, you know, playing with the rules and stuff.
- 1:01:28Well, there is an upside to all that.
- 1:01:30Let's call it alleged cheating.
- 1:01:32Is that that pushing the boundary to win to, to get that competitive advantage?
- 1:01:37Usually.
- 1:01:38Trickles down years later into production cars because that, you know,
- 1:01:42hydropneumatic suspension and all that we take advantage of that on on road cars.
- 1:01:46Now, with even the magneto suspensions and air ride and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:01:50And so all of these guys, you know, maybe they wear the scarlet letter.
- 1:01:54But at the end of the day, they were pioneers of automotive engineering
- 1:01:58and we've reaped the benefits.
- 1:01:59decades later of them pushing the boundary.
- 1:02:02So I mean, I don't fault them so much.
- 1:02:03And I'm sure whatever's going on with force India will
- 1:02:06have a rippling effect later.
- 1:02:08And you know, the next Toyota Yaris that debuts will have some technology
- 1:02:13from maybe that Formula One car.
- 1:02:14Who knows, right?
- 1:02:15On the other side of the pond, on our side, there's, you know,
- 1:02:18big, big race just happened.
- 1:02:20The weekend of August 23rd was the Indy 500, right?
- 1:02:23The Indy 500 usually happens Memorial Day weekend, but thanks to COVID it was
- 1:02:26punted all the way to the end of August.
- 1:02:29And I have a feeling most of us probably forgot about it because Penske pulled
- 1:02:34the plug late July reversing their course and saying the Indy 500 is
- 1:02:39closed to fans because originally it was going to be one of the first big
- 1:02:42races to reopen with full grandstands and said they pulled that away.
- 1:02:46In addition to that, it was the first Indy 500 without a woman driver
- 1:02:51in the field since the year 2000.
- 1:02:53So there's been a female driver in the Indy 500 since 2000 up until this year.
- 1:02:58And you know, that goes back to a previous episode we did, you know,
- 1:03:01about the gentleman driver and getting sponsorship and all that kind of thing.
- 1:03:04We debated that and then about, you know, females and motorsport.
- 1:03:07So that's an interesting story, uh, there too.
- 1:03:10And we posted the link for that if you want to dive into that a little bit more.
- 1:03:13But it poses a question, you know, I know granted we were busy at the track
- 1:03:16and we're going to talk about that a little bit more here towards the end
- 1:03:18of the segment, you know, this past weekend when the Indy 500 was going
- 1:03:22on, but I didn't even hear anybody talk about it around the paddock.
- 1:03:25Like it just seemed off.
- 1:03:27Like, did anybody even care?
- 1:03:29The only time I heard about it was from Sam when I was getting ready
- 1:03:32to leave and he asked me if I was gonna try and find it on the radio.
- 1:03:35Up to that point, I had no idea what was going on, but I'm not that big of
- 1:03:38an IndyCar fan, so I'm not surprised that I didn't know it was going on.
- 1:03:43Yeah, it's a shame though, and I hope next year's better.
- 1:03:46And we all get back in the groove and, and, you know, we haven't lost that
- 1:03:49enthusiasm about racing and some of the larger events, but that doesn't seem to
- 1:03:53have stopped the crazies over at MotoGP.
- 1:03:57Has it Tanya?
- 1:03:58No, they were still racing and, uh, weekend, I guess at the Austria, uh,
- 1:04:04GP race, there was a massive crash.
- 1:04:08Well, I guess what could have been a very massive crash.
- 1:04:12Morbidelli and Zarco collided with each other, which caused Morbidelli's
- 1:04:17bike to keep going down the track.
- 1:04:19And the Austrian track is not well known for its safety, if you will,
- 1:04:24particularly for motorcycles.
- 1:04:26There were no barriers to prevent the motorcycle from continuing its path
- 1:04:29of travel, and continuing it did.
- 1:04:31Straight across, you know, all the sand, trap, the grass, back out on the track,
- 1:04:36right as Vinales and Rossi were coming out of the turn and his bike, if there was a
- 1:04:44paper between his bike flying in front of Rossi, that was a lot of, a lot of space.
- 1:04:50There's a video, um, that you can watch, they kind of cover several
- 1:04:54angles and go through it a few times.
- 1:04:57And at first you're like, Oh, okay, big deal.
- 1:04:58And then you kind of see the different angles and you're like, Oh my goodness.
- 1:05:02He's so lucky.
- 1:05:03They're both lucky that they didn't get completely taken out, wiped out
- 1:05:07by a motorcycle that's probably still traveling at close to 200 miles an
- 1:05:11hour, just across the ground, right?
- 1:05:12A projectile coming at them.
- 1:05:14I mean, scary.
- 1:05:15Those guys, without a doubt, are just a different caliber of racer
- 1:05:19to do what they do that close to the ground without, you know, a
- 1:05:23metal cage around them by any means.
- 1:05:25So, you know, hats off to their bravery and they're just.
- 1:05:29Very lucky.
- 1:05:30Glad to see that nobody was seriously injured.
- 1:05:33I say it about hockey players all the time, and the same rings true
- 1:05:37for motorcyclists and MotoGP riders.
- 1:05:41They are a complete different species.
- 1:05:44They are not human.
- 1:05:45I mean, if you think about, like, all the crashes and stuff that happened at
- 1:05:48the Isle of Man, during the time trials they run there, and how many people die.
- 1:05:52or get seriously injured year in and year out.
- 1:05:56And yet they still show up.
- 1:05:58What is it?
- 1:05:58Hundreds of riders every single year to test and to tempt fate, you
- 1:06:03know, to try and set the best times.
- 1:06:05It's just that it's ludicrous what these guys go through.
- 1:06:07Same with hockey players and, and, you know, against other sports.
- 1:06:10It's just, it's amazing.
- 1:06:12Yeah.
- 1:06:12And I mean, a lot of people say, you know, IndyCar is the best thing on TV.
- 1:06:15NASCAR is the best thing on TV.
- 1:06:17I'm a, I'm a big fan of WRC.
- 1:06:19But I mean, my dad used to be a big MotoGP Superbike fan and he graduated
- 1:06:24into that and he was like, man, none of this other racing even holds a candle
- 1:06:29to what the guys on the bikes do.
- 1:06:30So if you're looking for something different and something really exciting,
- 1:06:34start watching MotoGP and start watching Superbike because it is out of this world
- 1:06:38crazy and you definitely won't be put to sleep like watching any of those F1 races.
- 1:06:43That is for sure.
- 1:06:44But speaking of formula one and kind of stepping back in time, another
- 1:06:48article that came across our desk was machine learning reveals the fastest
- 1:06:52F1 driver of the past 40 years.
- 1:06:54And I said,
- 1:06:59Yeah, exactly.
- 1:07:00Sad trombone.
- 1:07:01I said to myself, who cares?
- 1:07:04Right?
- 1:07:04Because it's like comparing apples and chainsaws.
- 1:07:07I mean, this was the premise of the Fongio documentary that I, that
- 1:07:11I reviewed a couple months back.
- 1:07:12If anybody searches our website and looks it up, it's under must see documentaries.
- 1:07:17And it was the whole thing.
- 1:07:17Oh, we're going to talk to all these.
- 1:07:18People were going to run machine learning algorithms.
- 1:07:21And at the end of the day, Fongio is the best driver of all time,
- 1:07:24but it's an economy of scale.
- 1:07:26So Senna was the best.
- 1:07:28Is he better than Schumacher?
- 1:07:30Yes, because Schumacher wasn't as good when Schumacher and Senna ran together.
- 1:07:35But is Hamilton as good as Senna or vice versa?
- 1:07:39You know, Senna was better than Emerson, Fittipaldi, you know, but it's like,
- 1:07:42who cares at the end of the day, realistically, the only thing that matters
- 1:07:46is the number of wins you have and, you know, Schumacher still holds the title
- 1:07:50for the most championships until that gets, you know, it's like Babe Ruth in
- 1:07:54baseball until you beat it or, or whoever.
- 1:07:57That it doesn't really matter.
- 1:07:59And they do this, like you just said, in baseball.
- 1:08:01They do this in every sport.
- 1:08:03I mean, what was it, a couple years ago?
- 1:08:05Five years ago?
- 1:08:05They did this in horse racing.
- 1:08:07Yeah.
- 1:08:07And they ran a simulation.
- 1:08:09Now, granted, the variables in F1 racing are significantly
- 1:08:13more than in horse racing.
- 1:08:14In horse racing, essentially, you have the horses and the track.
- 1:08:17And with the exception of weather, it's the same conditions every single time.
- 1:08:21But With you got different cars, you got different competition,
- 1:08:26uh, it's, it's just completely it's, it's an asinine comparison.
- 1:08:31They do it in basketball.
- 1:08:32Was Kobe the best ever?
- 1:08:33Is, you know, Jordan the best ever?
- 1:08:36Or is it someone from before, you know, in baseball, like you said, Babe
- 1:08:39Ruth, Hank Aaron, are they the best?
- 1:08:41Or is it the Barry Bonds and them?
- 1:08:42Exactly.
- 1:08:43It's just, it's these comparisons.
- 1:08:45They're really just.
- 1:08:47They're their fan service and the fans of the whoever, you know, they're going
- 1:08:52to debate because they have a favorite.
- 1:08:54Absolutely.
- 1:08:55But there's 1 superstar that we cannot contest.
- 1:08:58And time is going to tell us about Mr Tom Cruise.
- 1:09:02So this is this is old news quite frankly, but it.
- 1:09:05It kind of, I don't remember why it came up in the GTM conversation at some point.
- 1:09:10Something came up about Tom Cruise and I was like, yeah, Tom Cruise.
- 1:09:13There's a picture of him at Summit.
- 1:09:15And yes, there is.
- 1:09:16There's a picture of him and, uh, the late great Paul Newman,
- 1:09:20um, hanging in the Shea kitchen.
- 1:09:21Shea Summit, that's the main raceway, but, um, before his days of thunder, Tom
- 1:09:28actually tried his hand at a little bit of race car driving, and I believe Paul
- 1:09:32Newman kind of helped him a little bit.
- 1:09:34He was driving Newman Sharp sponsored Nissan at one point, and there's a
- 1:09:40Jalopnik article that actually goes through this, and again, it's called
- 1:09:44Old News because it's Was released all the way back in 2010, but, um, obviously
- 1:09:49the story isn't going to change and I'm going to quote a lot out of it because
- 1:09:52I think it's better told that way, you know, he had, he had his racing career
- 1:09:56and I will say there's a couple of YouTube videos of real live footage of
- 1:10:00him racing at summit point and everything.
- 1:10:02And it's pretty interesting to watch and listen to the very dramatic announcer
- 1:10:07announcing the race and there's.
- 1:10:09A few clips of them kind of interviewing Tom and whatnot in the paddock in that
- 1:10:14one YouTube video clip they were talking about, I guess, in his first year, he had
- 1:10:17one, he had 16 starts, one, four races.
- 1:10:20So, okay.
- 1:10:20He was doing something out there.
- 1:10:22And then that second year, I think is when he moved up classes and was in
- 1:10:25the Nissan 300 ZX Nissan, and you know.
- 1:10:30At one point, I guess they called in or they were interviewing this gentleman,
- 1:10:35Roger French, who at the time was a regional champion with SCCA and they were
- 1:10:40kind of asking, Hey, hey, look at this.
- 1:10:42You look at some footage of Tom driving.
- 1:10:44What do you think?
- 1:10:47And Mr.
- 1:10:48French there says doesn't look too good.
- 1:10:54So there's clue number one.
- 1:10:56He was eating ice cream.
- 1:10:59So he said, this is a quote, In the car he was very aggressive.
- 1:11:03I was trying to hold him back so he could learn in stages, but he wanted to go fast.
- 1:11:07It's in his nature.
- 1:11:08His attitude was go fast all the time.
- 1:11:10So he was a full send kind of guy.
- 1:11:13That's my kind of driver right there.
- 1:11:16And if you watch some of the video replays, I mean, there's
- 1:11:20a lot of him going sideways.
- 1:11:23A couple spins in there.
- 1:11:24Oh yeah, the video we're posting with this show is excellent, uh,
- 1:11:27summarization of Tom Cruise's STCA career.
- 1:11:31I mean, the article, he earned the nickname C.
- 1:11:35Cruise Crash Again, so there's something going on with this article.
- 1:11:41Overall, I described him as a nice guy and, you know, he's
- 1:11:45really into the, into that racing life for that time he was there.
- 1:11:47So he was trying to be dedicated to the sport.
- 1:11:49sport when he was there.
- 1:11:50He just wasn't, you know, there to get some photos or anything.
- 1:11:53He, he wanted to talk to talk and do all that stuff.
- 1:11:56But another quote from this gentleman, he didn't seem to put my advice into practice
- 1:12:00very much, but he was a really good guy when he was in the world of racing.
- 1:12:04He was in the world of racing for his part.
- 1:12:06He just fit right in.
- 1:12:08He was serious about racing and that's all he wanted to talk about.
- 1:12:11You just really had the feeling that once he closed the visor,
- 1:12:14he was back to being aggressive.
- 1:12:16So at the end of the day, you see his driving style, you kind of hear
- 1:12:20someone who was trying to coach him.
- 1:12:22He was a difficult student, is what we would probably say, you know, he,
- 1:12:26he was trying to do his own thing.
- 1:12:28These are my takeaways from, from reading and watching the videos.
- 1:12:33That confident and aggressive behavior probably overshadowed any.
- 1:12:36Possible talent he had and it just didn't develop.
- 1:12:39And, and who's to say like, you know, his acting career was taking off
- 1:12:42and you, you have to make choices in the path you wanna take in life.
- 1:12:46And clearly he opted, maybe it was a better choice to go down
- 1:12:50the, uh, the movie side of things.
- 1:12:52It depends if you're a fan or not.
- 1:12:53It's questionable some of the movies, but I don't know.
- 1:12:56It's interesting.
- 1:12:57Very cool.
- 1:12:58So with that, we move into our next section.
- 1:13:01Would you like some fries with that?
- 1:13:04So Tanya, kick us off.
- 1:13:06Back to Florida.
- 1:13:07There's a lot of nice, fine people in Florida.
- 1:13:10We're not trying to, you know, poke fun at Floridians.
- 1:13:13There's crazy people in every state, in every part of the world
- 1:13:17that do some very crazy things.
- 1:13:19And, you know, this just happens again.
- 1:13:22It's another Florida man.
- 1:13:22And, you know, he wanted a Porsche, wanted a 911 Turbo.
- 1:13:27And, you know, perhaps he didn't have the 140 grand for it, but.
- 1:13:31He had the 75 for a home printer.
- 1:13:37So, you know, what do you do?
- 1:13:40I mean, you just print a cashier's check for 140, 000 and you walk into the
- 1:13:44dealer and you buy yourself a 9 11 gerbo.
- 1:13:46Makes total sense.
- 1:13:47Seems legit.
- 1:13:48And then you try to buy three Rolexes with more printed checks.
- 1:13:51And then of course, because you bought a 75 printer, and I don't know if you
- 1:13:55bought a 75 printer, you get caught, then you get arrested, and you very likely go
- 1:14:01to jail for fraudulent activities, and Check forging and all sorts of good stuff.
- 1:14:07So needless to say, he was caught.
- 1:14:09Short lived.
- 1:14:10Hope he enjoyed the two days he had to 9 11.
- 1:14:13I mean, there is all sorts of wrong with this equation.
- 1:14:17From not just the printing of the check, but the people that accepted it,
- 1:14:21the dealership, and everything else.
- 1:14:23I mean, it's just mind boggling.
- 1:14:25And again, not trying to single out Florida, because But the
- 1:14:29stuff that goes on down there, you can't, you can't make this up.
- 1:14:32What, maybe it was a really good printer, I don't know.
- 1:14:35I mean, usually the cashier's checks and things like that, I
- 1:14:37mean, checks in general, I mean, have certain marks, watermark.
- 1:14:42They use a special magnetic ink.
- 1:14:45There you go.
- 1:14:45So again, it all comes full circle.
- 1:14:47You take apart the Etch a Sketch to use the parts to repair your
- 1:14:50Cybertruck, use the magnet, aluminum magnetic powder inside the Etch a
- 1:14:54Sketch to make your, Your check that you bought the printer from Best Buy,
- 1:14:58so you can go buy your Sony Vision S.
- 1:15:00You see it all, it's all full circle.
- 1:15:03It's turtles all the way down from here.
- 1:15:06And then, with your Best Buy rewards points, you can turn
- 1:15:08around on the PlayStation 5, and put in your Sony Vision S.
- 1:15:13There you go.
- 1:15:14We have connected all the dots now.
- 1:15:16So what else is going on in Florida?
- 1:15:18Anything?
- 1:15:20So this one is quite good, and it's worth a look at the image.
- 1:15:25So, it's a very short article, and our southern friends at Wink News,
- 1:15:31Southwest Florida's leading news, Posted this article about a Florida
- 1:15:35man, seen on video, riding on the hood of a truck down a busy highway.
- 1:15:40And I would like to point out that it's not just a truck, like,
- 1:15:44ain't no Ford F 150 or Chevy.
- 1:15:47This is a frickin semi truck, okay?
- 1:15:51And, according to the picture, He's only wearing underwear.
- 1:15:55He's sunbathing.
- 1:15:57I noticed that too.
- 1:15:59I was like, wow.
- 1:16:00At least I hope it's underwear and not blurred out.
- 1:16:04But at any rate, it's hopefully grey underwear.
- 1:16:06I'm gonna read.
- 1:16:08Florida man went for a nine mile busy highway.
- 1:16:13But in a highly unusual fashion, on the hood of a tractor trailer, the
- 1:16:17South Florida Sun Sentinel reported that the unidentified man climbed onto
- 1:16:21the hood, Saturday, after stopping his vehicle along Florida's Turnpike
- 1:16:26and walking out onto the highway.
- 1:16:27The Florida Highway Patrol says, the tractor trailer driver continued on down
- 1:16:33the road as the man clung to the hood and began pounding on the windshield
- 1:16:38with his fists and his forehead.
- 1:16:41Eventually, a trooper stopped the tractor trailer and took the man into custody.
- 1:16:45He was committed for a 72 hour mental health evaluation
- 1:16:48under the state's Baker Act.
- 1:16:50No serious injuries were reported.
- 1:16:52Not to say, if he has a mental health issue.
- 1:16:55But that's nothing to make fun of, and I hope he gets the help that he
- 1:16:58needs, because that's very serious.
- 1:17:00That aside, what the hell was the tractor trailer driver doing?
- 1:17:03Like, why did you keep going for nine miles?
- 1:17:06That guy, that guy was standing his ground.
- 1:17:09Maybe.
- 1:17:10He's got that stand your ground law.
- 1:17:12I bet that's what he was doing.
- 1:17:13Maybe they were reenacting the scene from Indiana Jones, where he crawls up from
- 1:17:18underneath of the Nazi, you know, military truck and then ends up on the windshield.
- 1:17:23They'll say there was some other crazy stuff that happened in Florida this past
- 1:17:26month and it involved inebriation and or in the riding was going down the highway.
- 1:17:39So public service announcement, please do not operate any sort of
- 1:17:44motorized vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, please.
- 1:17:49Period.
- 1:17:49Full stop.
- 1:17:50But with that being said, I can explain our next story, which is A
- 1:17:55square body hauls 32, 000 pounds.
- 1:17:59What's a square body?
- 1:18:01Shimmy!
- 1:18:02Yeah!
- 1:18:04And I tell you what, I started watching this video and I got about 30 seconds
- 1:18:09in and my brain started to melt.
- 1:18:13And then I realized, Mountain Man Dan is gonna be so proud of this.
- 1:18:17So I gotta watch this video because it involves square bodies.
- 1:18:21And I'm like, alright, I'm in it.
- 1:18:23And then I realized it's 20 minutes long and I'm like I'm
- 1:18:28like, holy cow Where are we going?
- 1:18:32So the moral to the story is If you want to understand the phrase more money than
- 1:18:39brains, you can't have that much money.
- 1:18:41He's got a square body All right, hold up He bought a retired fire
- 1:18:45truck, bright red, all the decals on the side, paid 15 grand for a square
- 1:18:51body, and it's mint, lifted, I mean they showed pictures of it underneath,
- 1:18:55all the parts have been replaced.
- 1:18:57manual transmission, rebuilt 350.
- 1:19:00All this stuff.
- 1:19:01I mean, this truck, this truck was ready to go, but I'm looking at this thing for,
- 1:19:05for what it is being as, as old as it is.
- 1:19:07It's a great truck, 15 grand, maybe a little bit much to spend on it.
- 1:19:11And then this guy, younger gentlemen, he decides.
- 1:19:15Well, we did a test on another episode where we wanted to see how much a
- 1:19:19Ford F 150 diesel or whatever it was could tow to its absolute limit.
- 1:19:25And apparently this gentleman is not a fan of the square body.
- 1:19:29And he tells you that pretty much within the first minute of the video.
- 1:19:33And he says, I want to prove or disprove whether or not these trucks are really
- 1:19:37all that they're cracked up to be because square body owners are religious.
- 1:19:40As we know, Mount Mandan is those trucks can do anything.
- 1:19:43They can go anywhere.
- 1:19:45There will be one in space next to the Tesla Roadster.
- 1:19:48It'll be flying rust, though, but you know, hey, whatever.
- 1:19:51He decides, okay, I'm gonna make sides for the bed, and I'm
- 1:19:55gonna fill it with firewood.
- 1:19:56Cool.
- 1:19:57I was like, well, to me, that does not seem like 16 tons of wood.
- 1:20:02Nope.
- 1:20:02That was to level the bed with the roof, so that he could then proceed
- 1:20:08to put logs, telephone poles, and all sorts of trees on top of the truck.
- 1:20:16And then strap it down with chains to the body and see how far he could drive.
- 1:20:20Once they realized they had forward motion, Then it was time
- 1:20:24to do all sorts of crazy things.
- 1:20:26So I'm not gonna spoiler alert, but you need to watch the video and watch it
- 1:20:30through the end because there's even stuff in the outtakes of the video
- 1:20:34that are just mind bogglingly stupid.
- 1:20:37But I will say it has left me with a new impression of the square body.
- 1:20:42Those trucks are Hilux.
- 1:20:46You cannot kill one as hard as these guys try.
- 1:20:50But you will lose brain cells by the end of that 20 minute period.
- 1:20:54It is absolutely bonkers.
- 1:20:56All right, and on that it's time for some random car adjacent news.
- 1:21:01So let's order up some golden nuggets.
- 1:21:03First up, many of you may or may not know, the DeLorean Motor Company still exists.
- 1:21:09It is based out of Texas and they are still working on developing a new version
- 1:21:15of the DeLorean and we wrote about this in a in an article earlier this year that
- 1:21:19Mountain Man Dan put together because he's a big fan of the DeLorean but you
- 1:21:22can now own your own time machine and i'm not talking about a gullwing stainless
- 1:21:27steel car No, Texas based DMC Motors has licensed the rights to the UK based
- 1:21:34Charlie Foxtrot watches to release a line of DeLorean inspired DMC watches.
- 1:21:42And so the website is dmc watch.
- 1:21:45com.
- 1:21:45They have seven different styles and they clock in.
- 1:21:49Haha, pun intended.
- 1:21:51Between 130 and 150 U.
- 1:21:53S.
- 1:21:54So they're really affordable.
- 1:21:55They're actually very stylish.
- 1:21:57All of the bezels are stainless steel, and you can check them out on the website.
- 1:22:01Really cool stuff.
- 1:22:02I'm actually thinking about picking one up.
- 1:22:04So, yes, you can now own your own DeLorean at a very affordable price, unlike the
- 1:22:08DeLoreans that are going to be coming out of Texas, which will probably have
- 1:22:12a sticker price well above 100, 000.
- 1:22:16Do they come with a line of Coke?
- 1:22:19That's the DeLorean S model.
- 1:22:20What else we got in there, Tanya?
- 1:22:25Somebody posted from Road and Track.
- 1:22:27You don't use brake clean to clean everything in your shop.
- 1:22:30Probably most people have brake clean or maybe use gum out instead.
- 1:22:35I mean, at the end of the day, it's a chemical.
- 1:22:39There's always going to be a warning label saying there's potential for causing
- 1:22:42cancer, and BrakeClean's no different.
- 1:22:44I mean, honestly, you should always use BrakeClean or GumOut or any of those
- 1:22:49solvents in a well ventilated area.
- 1:22:51I mean, I tend to use GumOut, which is basically Acetone.
- 1:22:56Yeah, aerosol nail polish remover, so.
- 1:22:58You know, I'm a little less concerned about acetone, but at the end of the day,
- 1:23:03you're under the car and you're spraying stuff down and that vapor cloud is hanging
- 1:23:06over your head and you start choking and you start nose burning and whatnot.
- 1:23:11I mean, it's not good for you.
- 1:23:12It's not healthy.
- 1:23:12So, I mean, the verdict I don't think is a solid.
- 1:23:16You spray it on your hands and you're going to die.
- 1:23:19You're in a room where it's in the air.
- 1:23:21You're going to die.
- 1:23:22I think it all comes down to prolonged exposure and how
- 1:23:25you're getting exposed to it.
- 1:23:26Obviously don't inhale it.
- 1:23:28Don't ingest it in any other form.
- 1:23:30You know, be sensible about when you're using chemicals.
- 1:23:32Yeah.
- 1:23:33And I don't have the chemistry background that you do.
- 1:23:35And I don't think of a lot of our listeners probably realize that yet
- 1:23:38about your background, that, you know, that's the industry you're in,
- 1:23:41you know, in the chemicals industry.
- 1:23:43I've always shied away from break clean because.
- 1:23:47The way I understood it is it's a formulation of bleach and the same
- 1:23:51chemicals they use for dry cleaning.
- 1:23:53And it's one of those things that is extremely harmful.
- 1:23:56And to your point, gum out or equivalent carbon choke cleaners, which are acetone
- 1:24:02based are not good for you either, but less harmful or carcinogenic,
- 1:24:07et cetera, compared to break clean.
- 1:24:09So I shy away from it.
- 1:24:11But I think the article was well written and it explains why you shouldn't
- 1:24:15and if you're concerned, you know what you have in your cabinet and
- 1:24:18you've never really thought about it before, I would recommend reading the
- 1:24:21article and getting a little bit more familiar with the solvents you do use.
- 1:24:26And I would say if you're a DIY mechanic and you're doing a lot of cleaning.
- 1:24:30Look into mineral spirits that do not have vapors in the same way as like an aerosol
- 1:24:36based cleaner does that, you know, with a proper wash tank and things like that.
- 1:24:40If you're doing a lot of heavy cleaning, especially if it's
- 1:24:42parts that are off of the car.
- 1:24:44And, you know, obviously, if it's something under the
- 1:24:45vehicle, you can't dismantle it.
- 1:24:48That makes it difficult.
- 1:24:49You need a spray.
- 1:24:50But even then, you can put mineral spirits in a spray bottle, like an
- 1:24:54old Windex bottle or something like that, and have the same effect, right?
- 1:24:58It cleans, I find the mineral spirits cleans up oil spills really well.
- 1:25:02That was one of the use cases in the article, but I also looked at it, went,
- 1:25:05well, you can buy a 5 bag of kitty litter.
- 1:25:08And just let it sit there, sop it up and then sweep it away.
- 1:25:10But you know, wear a mask when you're sweeping that too, because all that
- 1:25:14dust is not good for your lungs.
- 1:25:16So again, be safe.
- 1:25:18And in the day and now in the days of COVID where we're all wearing masks,
- 1:25:21remember to wear a mask when you're doing something in the garage that
- 1:25:24involves chemicals, vapors, et cetera.
- 1:25:26But is brake clean still the best for cleaning your brakes and preparing
- 1:25:31your new brakes to go on the car?
- 1:25:33I can do the same thing with gum out.
- 1:25:35I just prefer gum out and it evaporates quicker like I find break clean to
- 1:25:38be a little oilier in my opinion You know a little more just wetter.
- 1:25:43I don't know.
- 1:25:44It's hard to explain I I just find that gum out evaporates quicker dries
- 1:25:48cleaner But gum out you have to be really really careful because it will strip
- 1:25:51paint and it will melt plastics, right?
- 1:25:53Because that's the one of the things of acetone nail polish remover, right?
- 1:25:58So anyway, but we could we could diverge on that forever anything
- 1:26:01you want to add to that tanya?
- 1:26:02I mean chlorinated things generally aren't necessarily safe
- 1:26:08or, or, or healthy for the body.
- 1:26:10Something's excluded like table salt, which has chlorine in it, but that's
- 1:26:15a whole other compound that's safe.
- 1:26:17I mean, again, it just comes down to proper handling of it, good ventilation,
- 1:26:22and you don't want to let it sit there and be on your body or, or anything like that.
- 1:26:27I mean, if you got it in your eye and you need to take.
- 1:26:30You know, 15 minutes of flushing your eyes with water and, you know, seek medical
- 1:26:35attention, all that stuff, wash it off.
- 1:26:36You're part of the problem is like it can absorb into bloodstream
- 1:26:40and cause issues like that, which are health issues, which are bad.
- 1:26:44Well, switching gears to a little lighter subject.
- 1:26:46A lot of us have probably already.
- 1:26:48started thinking about the holidays and thinking about Christmas shopping.
- 1:26:51And we do put together a holiday shopping list at GTM every year.
- 1:26:54We've been doing it kind of as a tradition now for several years.
- 1:26:57And one of the things that just came across my desk, the post
- 1:27:00office has released for the first time, Hot Wheels inspired stamps.
- 1:27:05So you can start using those on your Christmas cards as you're getting
- 1:27:08prepared, since we're talking about the post office a little bit.
- 1:27:11You've also issued a.
- 1:27:14Small, little die cast, matchbox size, postal jeep that you can buy for 5.
- 1:27:2099.
- 1:27:21And I think they have a larger semi truck option, which is about 30, and
- 1:27:26the money goes to helping USPS out.
- 1:27:29So if you're into, again, collecting The little Matchbox Hot Wheels type cars.
- 1:27:33You could add a USPS postal truck to your collection.
- 1:27:37Very cool.
- 1:27:38So switching gears a little bit, we want to talk about a documentary
- 1:27:42that Brad actually brought to our attention not too long ago.
- 1:27:45We're not going to go in deep like we do in a lot of other movies, but I was
- 1:27:48really surprised to review Brock, which is considered a two part mini series.
- 1:27:54It was available on Netflix.
- 1:27:55It's now available on Amazon prime for you to review.
- 1:27:58It's all about the famous Australian driver, Peter Perfect,
- 1:28:02also known as Peter Brock.
- 1:28:04And it starts with his early days driving Austin eight thirties.
- 1:28:08You know how he got hooked up with the Holden racing team and all that and his
- 1:28:12career and his separation from GM and in the middle 80s not to give away the
- 1:28:16whole story but Peter Perfect outside of having most wins at the Bathurst
- 1:28:2212 hour race or the Bathurst Endurance race he's basically the creator of
- 1:28:28HSV or Holden Special Vehicles, right?
- 1:28:30So that was a specific branch of GM Australia that they let him spin
- 1:28:35off at the, that we know today, which now we know that Holden has
- 1:28:38been officially, you know, retired.
- 1:28:40And we heard, we learned that from Mike Crutchfield earlier this month.
- 1:28:43So really cool movie to tie back into some of the things that Mike was talking about.
- 1:28:48Unlike a typical documentary.
- 1:28:50It was a dramatization, which was cool.
- 1:28:52So they're real actors playing the parts.
- 1:28:54And some people you may recognize other people, you may not playing the
- 1:28:57parts of all the different people, you know, be it a Peter Brock, be it
- 1:29:01his manager and some, you know, the racers that he was with, et cetera.
- 1:29:04I found it fun, even though it was three hours long, the three
- 1:29:08hours went by really fast and it was, it was a good movie overall.
- 1:29:13But one of the cool things that they did was they actually interlaced real footage.
- 1:29:19into the movie footage with some CGI to simulate, you know, the
- 1:29:24actor being there as Peter Brock.
- 1:29:27And that was seamless, absolutely beautiful, very well done.
- 1:29:30So that made things move along really well.
- 1:29:33And it made the storytelling, I thought, more profound because it was
- 1:29:36a dramatization and not a documentary with a narrator or anything like that.
- 1:29:41So good story, worth checking out, free on Amazon Prime,
- 1:29:44uh, if you have access to it.
- 1:29:46in addition to that of movies when we posted links to these on the follow on
- 1:29:50article to this episode you can watch the new viral video that's going going around
- 1:29:55about a guy who mounts a gopro inside of his wheel and drives down the road so
- 1:29:59you actually get to see how a tire works from the inside i don't know about you
- 1:30:03guys but I thought it was interesting, but also not at the same time.
- 1:30:09I mean, it was anticlimactic.
- 1:30:10I mean, it's a fixed camera position, so it was really hard to see all the
- 1:30:15possible deflections and whatnot.
- 1:30:17And I don't know that, uh, it's been a while since I watched it, but
- 1:30:19I felt like he just kind of drove slowly around the blocks a few times.
- 1:30:23And then there were potholes or, you know, small potholes on those roads, but
- 1:30:27I don't know, it would have been cool kind of to see it go over a speed bump
- 1:30:31or really aggressively take a corner.
- 1:30:34I think he did at one point just kind of like quickly take off and
- 1:30:37make a turn, but it would have been interesting to really see an aggressive
- 1:30:41turn to see how the tire deflects.
- 1:30:44Yeah, I think I would have liked to have seen that video redone maybe with
- 1:30:47a slightly higher profile tire because I think that was the worry is that
- 1:30:51if because it was such a low profile tire, it probably crushed the camera.
- 1:30:55But I think on a higher profile tire on a racetrack, that would be really
- 1:30:59cool to see the deflection and the side, the sidewalls moving and all that
- 1:31:02kind of stuff on a proper race course, you know what it's like when you hit a
- 1:31:05curb at the racetrack, stuff like that.
- 1:31:07So we also learn how hot.
- 1:31:09Uh, that is true.
- 1:31:12That is very true.
- 1:31:13In addition to kind of cool movies that are out there.
- 1:31:15I posted links to a guy that built a working Lego rotary motor, all these
- 1:31:22cool light effects and he hooked up the spark plugs and he walks you through
- 1:31:25the build and It really kind of put into perspective if you're not into
- 1:31:29rotaries, like how a Winkle engine works and you know, how it's designed
- 1:31:34to work and at high speed, you can really see it with all the articulation,
- 1:31:39like how it actually functions.
- 1:31:41So if you're, if you want to learn something different, I
- 1:31:43would definitely check that out.
- 1:31:44And it was really cool to see the imagination and the creativity
- 1:31:47and the time that people put into.
- 1:31:49Building that kind of stuff.
- 1:31:50And on the opposite extreme of that, there's a gentleman in the
- 1:31:54UK who has become very famous for 3d printing, large scale Legos.
- 1:32:00And he just recently put together a double XL go kart.
- 1:32:05And it looks like a giant Lego Technic go kart and it's powered by
- 1:32:09an electric motor and he walks you through some testing and things like
- 1:32:13that of this prototype that he built.
- 1:32:16He gets it up to 31 miles an hour in a straight line drag race.
- 1:32:20But unfortunately it corners like, like a brick kind of terribly.
- 1:32:25And the reason being, and it was cool because the tires
- 1:32:29he has look like Lego tires.
- 1:32:30I mean, it's legit, right?
- 1:32:32The problem is they were plastic tires, but they were hard plastic.
- 1:32:35They were, no, they were, they were rubber tires, but they
- 1:32:38look like the knobby Lego tires.
- 1:32:40Like we're used to the everything, the steering wheel.
- 1:32:42It was all technique.
- 1:32:43The whole rack and pinion was a giant gear.
- 1:32:46I mean, when you see the video, you're like, wow, that's really cool.
- 1:32:49The problem was, and I guess him not being a car guy, this is
- 1:32:54where I saw the design fall apart.
- 1:32:55Yes, it's a go kart.
- 1:32:57Yes, it goes straight.
- 1:32:58Yes, it turns.
- 1:33:00The brakes were still a little suspect.
- 1:33:03The whole engine stuff was really cool, but he never thought
- 1:33:06to put a differential in it.
- 1:33:08So it turns.
- 1:33:10like a brick.
- 1:33:12It will not turn.
- 1:33:14And then what they did was they sped up the video to make
- 1:33:17it look like it's turning.
- 1:33:18But in an outtake at the very end, you can hear him going.
- 1:33:21This thing will not turn.
- 1:33:22And he's doing like one mile an hour because the rear wheels are locked and
- 1:33:26it's just basically hopping around.
- 1:33:28It's pretty bad.
- 1:33:29So Apparently he's going to try to redesign the rear end to have a
- 1:33:32differential and then they're going to try again and put it on the legitimate
- 1:33:35go kart track and test it against real go karts to see how it holds up.
- 1:33:39So I'm actually waiting to see that video come out and that seems really cool.
- 1:33:43But if you're interested, this guy has got a pretty, pretty good following
- 1:33:47and we posted the video to that.
- 1:33:49Brad, you had something I think in there we consider a golden nugget.
- 1:33:52So a guy up in Canada essentially spent 140, 000 1, 000 rebuilding and
- 1:34:01putting his own twist on a Mark I GTI.
- 1:34:04I mean, that leaves me with a very big why.
- 1:34:08I mean, don't get me wrong.
- 1:34:09I love, and I'm nostalgic and I wax poetic.
- 1:34:13Over the mark one gtis but 140 grand really it was it was about 200 grand
- 1:34:19in total If you include all the tools and stuff that he had to buy
- 1:34:23And he spent about 12 000 hours of labor going through this car now.
- 1:34:29It's really cool It's got a high compression 16 valve engine.
- 1:34:32Uh, he bumped it out to 2.
- 1:34:341 liters Completely redid the interior with period correct colors
- 1:34:37and uh in fabrics and everything.
- 1:34:40It's got 220 horsepower all motor KW V3 coilovers.
- 1:34:45It's got Mark 2 GTI transmission.
- 1:34:49He's got 14 inch wheels that hide four piston brakes.
- 1:34:53It's got carbon fiber bits, carbon fiber hood and hatch.
- 1:34:57Um, so he, he spent some time and did a really good job on it.
- 1:35:01But the real question is just why?
- 1:35:04I know because all the stuff you listed sounds like a, let's call it a 30,
- 1:35:08000 Mark I GTI I would see at Vagfare.
- 1:35:11You know what I mean?
- 1:35:12It's like, I don't know.
- 1:35:13Like, where did he sink?
- 1:35:14Is he factoring in his labor?
- 1:35:16I mean, I don't know.
- 1:35:17I just want to know what it sells for and bring a trailer at the end of the day.
- 1:35:19In the article, there is a 122 page write up.
- 1:35:24Of everything that he did.
- 1:35:26And then there's also a documented 180 different videos kind of showcasing
- 1:35:32the how to's and and everything he did.
- 1:35:34And a lot of that 140 grand goes into his one off research and development.
- 1:35:40So he's including his R and D cost.
- 1:35:43Uh, into building this car.
- 1:35:45Got it.
- 1:35:45Okay.
- 1:35:46He sold it.
- 1:35:46He sold it to a couple up in, uh, in, in Canada, uh, and he's got a couple
- 1:35:52other projects that he's looking to do.
- 1:35:54I guess the bigger question is, is this in Canadian dollars or U.
- 1:35:57S.
- 1:35:57dollars?
- 1:35:58The article did not say.
- 1:36:00Hmm.
- 1:36:00But he's got two other projects.
- 1:36:02The first project is he, he hasn't started him yet, but he wants to do E mini bikes.
- 1:36:07Um, so he wants to electrify some of the, uh, the seventies, like banana bikes.
- 1:36:11So you used to see running around and he also wants to build a Tesla
- 1:36:15model three for the track, probably.
- 1:36:17So we can beat that nine 11 GT three.
- 1:36:20Yeah, Pike's Peak, baby.
- 1:36:23Uh, last thing in this segment.
- 1:36:24So an article came across our desk, thanks to Sam.
- 1:36:27And it really explains why software developers choose what they choose.
- 1:36:32They build a simulation game, especially a racing game.
- 1:36:35I thought it was actually quite interesting.
- 1:36:36I won't bore you guys with the details.
- 1:36:38We will post the link to the article, but basically it comes down to
- 1:36:41processing power and concessions, right?
- 1:36:44They can only simulate so much and only give you so much realism based on, you
- 1:36:49technology that we have, processing power.
- 1:36:51And then there's a gameplay aspect to it, right?
- 1:36:53So if you make it too difficult, nobody wants to play it, you make it too
- 1:36:56easy, then it's just for, for kids.
- 1:36:58It's like Mario Kart.
- 1:36:59So there's a lot of that going back and forth and they
- 1:37:01try to make everybody happy.
- 1:37:03So I know we complain a lot about certain games.
- 1:37:06Oh, Forza doesn't have this and Project Cars doesn't have that.
- 1:37:08And then this one has, you know, the other thing.
- 1:37:10At the end of the day, it's all about compromises.
- 1:37:13So if you're interested in getting that backstory, check
- 1:37:15out the link to that article.
- 1:37:16I found it to be interesting just to kind of nerd out on.
- 1:37:21So now we come to our final segment, the secret sauce, where we cover some
- 1:37:25quickly cover some internal GTM news.
- 1:37:28So.

- 1:38:17Pete also cheated and dabbled in that gray area with his 47 second run.

- 1:40:17Yeah.
- 1:40:18I mean, you know, what you guys don't realize is she does a lot of work.
- 1:40:23This drive through series that we put together is really inspired by her.
- 1:40:26And she's done a really good job of kind of formulating these segments and
- 1:40:29collecting the data and making sure that this goes off without a hitch.
- 1:40:32And we could not do this without her.
- 1:40:34And we're looking forward to doing more of these episodes and hearing more
