- 1:27SPEAKER_05: You ain't even had to tell her what it is, yo.
- 1:29SPEAKER_05: And it's crazy because when Steph's on the radio, she got a whole paragraph that she says.
- 1:39SPEAKER_05: I wanna hear it.
- 1:40SPEAKER_05: I wanna hear it.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: This is it.

- 1:58SPEAKER_01: That's dope.
- 2:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I like it.
- 2:01SPEAKER_05: And all the other no hablos at the job be like, she'd be like, Boogs, what is she saying?
- 2:06SPEAKER_05: They love it.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 2:13SPEAKER_05: You know, I mean Steph representing YO Yonkers, New York, correct?
- 2:17SPEAKER_05: That's a fact, that's a fact.
- 2:19SPEAKER_05: Which is pretty dope, because E, anybody, nobody, right, before Steph, right?
- 2:23SPEAKER_05: From YO.
- 2:24SPEAKER_05: She's the first one.
- 2:25SPEAKER_05: Pretty dope.
- 2:26SPEAKER_05: Pretty dope.
- 2:26SPEAKER_05: And then she out here running around with the locks and all of that.
- 2:29SPEAKER_05: Now I see it.
- 2:30SPEAKER_05: She out here right now with Meek Mill and all that.
- 2:31SPEAKER_05: I see it, we see it.
- 2:32SPEAKER_05: We see it.
- 2:34SPEAKER_05: But I uh this is the first time I admit it, and Camilla's gonna laugh.
- 2:37SPEAKER_05: We was uptown, right?
- 2:39SPEAKER_05: Not not not the block that um Baca was on.
- 2:41SPEAKER_05: What's the other block?
- 2:42SPEAKER_05: What's the other side?
- 2:43SPEAKER_05: Negro Clado.
- 2:44SPEAKER_05: Oh, around there.
- 2:45SPEAKER_05: It was one, oh yeah, yeah.
- 2:46SPEAKER_05: It was one of the smallest.
- 2:49SPEAKER_05: And then Camilla goes, da da da da da, Steph case.
- 2:52SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I'm like, oh, she popping.
- 2:55SPEAKER_05: Camilla's like, Books, she popping.
- 2:57SPEAKER_05: But I'm like, no, I know, I know she is, but but come on.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: Yo, they call L Boogs on his bullshit again.
- 3:04SPEAKER_05: Yo, wait, wait, wait.
- 3:05SPEAKER_05: Yo, and I'm not gonna lie, and this is the first time I talk about it, yo, he was co-signing Steph so hard body, and I was like, but why?
- 3:12SPEAKER_05: But why?
- 3:13SPEAKER_05: Yo, and then it's one of those things, you know, I met Steph and then I got it.
- 3:17SPEAKER_05: I understood it.
- 3:18SPEAKER_05: You know what I'm saying?
- 3:18SPEAKER_05: I understood why Camillo was banned so hard for Steph.
- 3:22SPEAKER_05: And the day we made, we were all behind the scenes.
- 3:25SPEAKER_05: I even reached out to people I never met in my life just to um let them know what we was doing with Steph.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: But I just wanted to say that like classic checks and balance.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: Oh, books classic and balance.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: We have checks and balance.
- 3:34SPEAKER_05: And without talking to Steph, she gets why we do what we do.
- 3:37SPEAKER_07: So I mean, all right, let's let's go to the beginning since we're here.
- 3:41SPEAKER_07: What's the Steph Cake story?
- 3:43SPEAKER_07: We want to hear this.
- 3:46SPEAKER_07: I never heard it, so I'm not.
- 3:49SPEAKER_07: That's why that's why we're here.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: I share the same story.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: All right, bye, bye, but all right.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: I could I'm gonna start way back.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: So when I was in high school slash college, like I always knew I wanted to be an entertainer.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: So I used to, my dream job was to be a host on 106 in Park.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: So like that was that was it for me.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: So uh by the time I got to college, I was getting my degree in communication and media relation.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: So I just knew I wanted to be in the entertainment world, whether I was the star in the front or whether I was the person working in the back, I just knew I wanted to work with like media and stuff like that.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: So by the time I got to college, I was a crazy like party goer.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: I was in all the clubs, I knew all the promoters.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Um, I knew Rick Rock before all of that, so I would pull up to his gigs, and I was always fascinated when Rick Rock was on the set.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Like, if Rick Rock was on the set, me and my girls were pulling up to the club.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: So uh my one of my best friend Flo, she was um a waitress, but she was she had her own game night Wednesdays in Uptown, and she was telling me that she wanted me to DJ her one year anniversary.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: I'm like, girl, no, like I'm gonna pause right there and go back again.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: So growing up, I used to make CDs, lime wire heavy, like you know, mixtapes and playlists and all that stuff.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: So I was that person for all my friends, all my family members.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: So that's kind of where all that stemmed for me.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: And then the iPods came out, I was curating playlists and stuff like that, which would be equivalent to like my crates now.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: So I was just doing a lot of things that kind of were foreshadowing that I was meant to be a DJ.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: Um, so back to college, I get my degree.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, wait, let's pause the degree part.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: My last year, I needed an internship, and I had applied for an internship at Power 105.1, but I didn't get it the first time.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: So I I ended up interning at the Maury show.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: And it wasn't that bad because I got my glimpse of TV, you know, TV show, which I wanted to kind of get in or I was at least interested in.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: So I did the Maury show, I got the A in the internship, and I had all my credits.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: I graduated, but um, pause again.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: I didn't graduate yet.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: It was the first semester of my last year.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: So then my second semester of my last year, I don't need the internship, but I'm like, I want to try again to get this radio internship just so I could get a taste of what radio life is like.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: This time across, I get the internship, and um I got that, I got an AM that class.
- 6:23SPEAKER_07: Well, you said you you were interning at the morning show.
- 6:25SPEAKER_07: Was it the morning show at Power 105 or was the Morris?
- 6:28SPEAKER_07: The Maury, the Maury.
- 6:29SPEAKER_07: Oh, the Maury.
- 6:29SPEAKER_07: I thought you were.
- 6:32SPEAKER_07: Okay, so you were at the Maury show.
- 6:34SPEAKER_07: Oh, were you the person that used to set up who was the dad or not?
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Well, my internship at the Maury show consisted of me like picking up the calls of people calling, trying to get on the show and stuff like that, writing down their situation and stories, and then passing it forward to the producer or producer assistant.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: And the two years, whoever got picked for the show, those are real psychos, yeah.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow from like the West Bubble Fuck.
- 7:00SPEAKER_05: That's what I always I always wonder, like these real people that are.
- 7:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah, these are real-in, stick.
- 7:05SPEAKER_05: Yes, but you I was like, they're doing it for the trip, baby, 100%.
- 7:08SPEAKER_05: That's so good.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Most likely, most likely, because they got a little check.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 7:12SPEAKER_07: So then, so then, so then you got the internship of power 105.
- 7:14SPEAKER_07: But were you already DJing on the side, like by your like your friends and everything?
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: No, I would nothing, nothing at all.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Nothing.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: Okay, so got it.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: Nothing at all.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: I actually did have I had a little uh controller, like Nacerado.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: It was like a I don't want to say bootleg, but it was like a beginner beginner co controller that one of my exes had gotten for me at the time because I she knew I was so interested.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: So, but I never knew like the like the like the official rules or like the official.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was literally like I have a picture of me, like I have to find it, of me like on my bed with like a hookah and the the controller and and the and the laptop.
- 7:52SPEAKER_05: Very essential, the hookah, okay.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Very essential.
- 7:56SPEAKER_05: Oh question.
- 7:57SPEAKER_05: So then you had the station, you got the internship, and then when did the gig start rolling in like?
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: I'm st I'm still not DJing yet.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: So I got the internship and I'm interning for Cherry Martinez.
- 8:07SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: And I it was- What year was that?
- 8:10SPEAKER_05: What year was that?
- 8:10SPEAKER_05: I need a DJ.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: 2009.
- 8:12SPEAKER_05: Okay, bro, that was a minute, yeah.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: 2008.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: No, 2009 for sure, because I graduated that year.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: So 2008, 2009.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: And then um, when that internship finished, I got the A.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: And then the summer happened.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: Well, it didn't happen fully because what I ended up doing that summer was I made a fake school letter from college so that I could get another the internship again at Power.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Because, yes, I got an A in the class, I did everything I had to do, but I didn't feel like I like absorbed everything I had to during my first trial of my internship at Power No 5.1.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: So I made it, yeah, I wanted more.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: I'm like, no, no, this can't be it.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Like I felt like I just did it for school.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: Like I got my A and I'm ready to graduate.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Okay, now what?
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: So um I felt like what happened was Angie has switched over, and I was like, okay, I can't go nowhere right now.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: Like, let me see what what what I can, you know, kind of soak in from her.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: And when Angie came to power, you know, I told I remember telling her, like, whatever she needed, I was there to help, whether it be at the station, whether it be with like her family, her kids, or whatever, because Nico was still really young.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: Good move, good move.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: So I'm like, whatever you need, I'm here.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: Call me.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: And then um, I, you know, she calls me.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: I'm taking care of Nico, I'm driving her around, I'm running errands for her, I'm holding it down at this at the station and stuff like that.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: Whatever it was she needed.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: So I was I was always on call for Angie Martinez.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: You was a real intern.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was a real intern.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: So um the internship ended, and I'm like, damn, I can't do this again.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: Like, I really gotta get it together and you know, do uh what am I gonna do with what I got from these internships and stuff like that?
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: So I worked with Angie a little while longer, but it wasn't stable enough for me to like sustain my bills.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: I got Sally Mae blowing up my phone.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: I uh what am I gonna do?
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: So I had to pivot a little bit and I ended up working at ATT because, like I said, bills and stuff like that.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: I didn't even last a full year.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: So then fac back to where my best friend had called me that she wanted me to uh DJ for her one year anniversary of her game night.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: I was like, you know what?
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Fine, I'll do it.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: And I linked up with DJ Bones for like a week straight, went going to his house every day.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: He was teaching me the fundamentals, like the machine, everything, like everything that was gonna get me through that night.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: So that day came and I killed it.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: And after that, people were hitting me up for bookings and stuff like that.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: I'm like, okay, like so then I'm still working at ATT and I'm trying to do this DJing thing, and it just isn't working out.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: My job doesn't want to give me weekends off, and they don't want to like help me with the hours and stuff like that.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: I'm coming into work looking like a zombie.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: And I have a conversation with my dad.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Now, my dad, he's very strict.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: He like, you know, does everything by the books and you know, papers gotta be done right, and you know, the future and 4010, 401k and stuff like that.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: So I'm thinking my dad's gonna be like, no, you have to stay at ATT, you have a more promising future, is more legit.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: Instead, my dad was like, if you feel like you could make a living out of this and you're gonna be happy and and you know you're gonna be fine DJing, go for it.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: And once he said that, it like took a big weight off my shoulder, and I was like, you know what, I'm going 100% with this DJing thing.
- 11:46SPEAKER_06: And give it up a pop, yeah.
- 11:48SPEAKER_06: Give it up.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right, give it up a pop up.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Because let me tell you, let me tell you, my parents were like, What?
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: Doing who?
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: We're playing what?
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: My mom.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: My mom at first was like that.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: She did not, you know, she was not crazy about the idea of me DJing in the clubs every night out by myself and you know, getting drunk and stuff like that.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: Because I was a heavy drinker when I first started a heavy drinker.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: I got some stories for sure.
- 12:14SPEAKER_05: Yo, Steph, so that because we I know everybody on the screen, so that was your moment, right?
- 12:18SPEAKER_05: When you realized, like, yo, man, you know what, ATT, thank you so much.
- 12:21SPEAKER_05: But yeah, there's a lot going on over there.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm I'm I was prepared for the DJing thing to not work out because if it didn't work out, I would have stayed in ATT and ATT still they have an entertainment department.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: So I was gonna pivot out of sales and work my way into entertainment and then eventually, you know, be a big dog.
- 12:42SPEAKER_05: So, but I know, but at this whole time, uh when did you start?
- 12:47SPEAKER_05: Because yo, Steph's a hustler, B.
- 12:48SPEAKER_05: Don't let her fool you, all right?
- 12:49SPEAKER_05: She's so saw you anything, bro, okay?
- 12:53SPEAKER_05: When didn't that begin?
- 12:54SPEAKER_05: Was that like that's when it started?
- 12:55SPEAKER_05: The Steph, yo, she got air freshness, she got socks, she got pillows, bro.
- 13:00SPEAKER_05: Like hustle lighters.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: You still haven't told us how you came up with your name, right?
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: That's important.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, how do we get to that?
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: So my name is like it was on Twitter.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: I was tired of my original uh Twitter handle, which was Steph Cruz.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I need something else.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: And some girl was like, Why don't you do stuff cakes?
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: I'm like, Well, it has a nice ring, and it's just stuck to that.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: Once I changed my Twitter handle, everybody was like, cakes and stuff cakes and shut that.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: Shut that girl out, shot that girl out.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Uh I think her name was Anna.
- 13:31SPEAKER_05: But it it works though, because Steph is always celebrating.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: It does work because no, I my mom also used to bake cakes.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: I like, I know how to bake.
- 13:39SPEAKER_05: So if you want to get if you want to get technical.
- 13:43SPEAKER_05: Pandemic Steph cakes pulled them to the crib with an entire birthday cake for me, yo.
- 13:48SPEAKER_05: And and to this day, her mom keeps asking for the damn trait, bro.
- 13:53SPEAKER_05: Yes, it's been six years, bro.
- 13:55SPEAKER_05: Every year.
- 13:56SPEAKER_05: I gotta pick that up.
- 13:57SPEAKER_05: I still want it.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: I still want it.
- 13:59SPEAKER_05: By the way, bodied the cake.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: But wait, before even all of that, before all of that, shout out to DJ Primo.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: He's from out here in Yonkers.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: I pulled up on him on time at some like event here.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: Cause you know, a lot of things don't really be happening in Yonkers.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: But I pulled up to one of his events and he let me get on, not knowing a damn thing.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: Like, I just always had an ear to like spend music together.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: But he put me on.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: I have a picture of that.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: I'm there smoking hookah, and I'm behind the DJ booth, and I'm just, I don't know, just I have a lot of things that were foreshadowing that I was meant to be doing this.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: Like, I have a video when I was an intern at power with Frank Roth.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: It was like one in the morning, me and Frank are both interns at power, and he's in the in the studio teaching me.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: He's like cutting up and shit, going crazy.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: I'm like, damn, I'm gonna learn this shit somehow, somehow.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm gonna come for you date DJs and I'm gonna make it one day.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: And I still have that on my Instagram.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: So love that.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: It's just crazy.
- 14:54SPEAKER_05: But now y'all see when y'all be trying to call me a hater, you see how far back and how much they've they worked and they worked.
- 14:59SPEAKER_05: That's why like when I hear the drop when Steph is mixing on the show, I'll be hype.
- 15:04SPEAKER_05: I'll be so hype when she stuck heavy, it'll be like, yeah, yeah.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: But it's like it's about time.
- 15:10SPEAKER_05: Yo, yo, especially her and Frank, man.
- 15:14SPEAKER_05: I I got so much love for both of them, 100%.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: Now, question.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: We're we're we're to DJ now.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: Now we're DJing.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: When was that official nightclub call?
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: Like that, let's say big nightclub, big, you know, because listen, I see you do the big rooms now, I see you doing the pizza zoos, and I see you doing the all RB parties, 3,000, whatever.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: But when was that first call like?
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: Like that big gig?
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: It was probably like Cliff or something.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: I want to say it was like Cliff Nightclub, uptown New York City about 2016, 17?
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: Around now.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: Around yeah.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: 2016.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: And um, and that like I don't know.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: Like, I feel like experience, bad experience, nervous, like super nervous.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: To this day, I get nervous.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: Like, depending on the party, I still get nervous.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: But um, you know, that means you care.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: Uptown was like such a staple for me because I didn't see no female DJs in Uptown.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: Fact.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: Honestly, I didn't see it.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: Especially around that time, fact.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I didn't, you know, I always I was watching, you know, episode one, and I'm like, wow, if I had started DJing when I was 15, 16, 17, like I'd be a different beast right now.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: But um, I don't know, just like any big club in Uptown, as small as that sounds, any big club in Uptown was just special for me, you know, being able to Cliff Cliff was a big club back then.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: It was a good stage.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: Cliff was a good stage.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: Big stage.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: Right, and and it shit, that shit could get intimidating because that shit, you know, was packed from levels lack, yeah.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: I was always I was always nervous, and the drinking is what kind of helped.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: We we see the branching on the screen.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: Nah, the drinking definitely helped, but it also hurt a lot.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: Like, I I I'll never forget one time in Cliff, I got so drunk that I forgot my laptop.
- 17:09SPEAKER_03: Oh, I forgot.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: That was yeah.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: I'm keeping it funky.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: I'm keeping it funky, and I'll never forget that.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: But that was that was a lesson that I learned because after that, like I controlled my drinking.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: Uh I practiced.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: Oh, well, now I don't even drink like that.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: But you got your laptop back or no?
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: So this was a Sunday night in Cliff.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: The next day, I'm calling one of my uh one of the owners' son used to work there, and I think he did the hook or something.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: I'm blowing up his phone, like, bro, it's my book back there.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: It's my book.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Can you check my book back there?
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Can I pick it up?
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Like, it was scary.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: You got lucky because I see you later.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: You don't see a laptop ever.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: No, I mean my laptop did get stolen um like two years ago after International Women's Day leaving the station.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: I I was recording I was on air that day and I went out afterwards to get a drink to celebrate, and they broke into my car and took my whole bag.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: I've heard I've heard that story for another lesson.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: I've heard that story for so many years to DJs.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: The car get broken.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: I've even heard like back in the days when records were in effect.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: The whole crate.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: I think like stretch armstrong, they took his shit from his trunk, like, yo, like that's DJ's nightmare.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: Like, you know what I'm saying?
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: Early lessons that I learned for sure, and I haven't made that mistake ever again.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: To this day, to this day, I be on a set and I watch the opener or the other DJ just leave their laptop right there on the floor.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: Like, why don't the crate's like, yo, how do you leave your shit here?
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: Never again.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, facts.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: I learned now either put it in the trunk and go back to the party, or I'll have one of my boys.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: Never leave it in the car.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: Carry that.
- 18:45unknown: Never leave it in the car.
- 18:46SPEAKER_07: Now, you mentioned, you did mention, you know, since we're in here and you mentioned International Women's Day and all of that stuff.
- 18:52SPEAKER_07: Like, DJing is such a male machismo dominated type of situation.
- 19:00SPEAKER_07: Do you feel like sometimes it's challenging dealing with that, or do you just like whatever, yo, and just keep it pushing?
- 19:06SPEAKER_07: Like, cause I I could I could I can't relate, obviously I can't, but I could almost expect, knowing how people are, that they'll just they'll look at people differently because they're like, oh well, well, you know, she might not be as good as me just because I'm a guy.
- 19:18SPEAKER_07: Or, you know, whatever that may be.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's different very many different angles when it comes to this topic.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: It's like even as me getting to the club and I get to the door and they look at me like I'm stupid, I'm like, I'm the DJ.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: And sometimes I have to prove to them, I have to pull out the flyer, like, this is me.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: That's crazy.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: So it'd be stuff like that, and then like the unprofessionalism that I have to deal with with certain ownerslash promoters.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Like, the minute a promoter calls me babe, like I go.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: Fume comes out my ears.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: It's like, yo, where's the professionalism?
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: Like, where's the boundary?
- 19:51SPEAKER_06: Damn, babe.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: You're not, you're not, you know, you're not getting you're not texting Camelo, babe.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: Are you available?
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: Like, no, like don't don't don't come at me like that.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: I don't care how long we've known each other, like, there's no difference.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: It's a little different.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's gotten better.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: I think it's different now, you know.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: But back in the days, I could see that all day.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: Now it's like, I see you're so many female DJs.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, yeah.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: But I feel like Yeah, that's true.
- 20:17SPEAKER_07: There's a lot of female DJs, but like, even essentially, like, this, let's just even if you if you micro size it and just go uptown, like, you don't see a lot of female DJs in uptown.
- 20:26SPEAKER_07: And you don't see like, even in hip-hop, bro, it's rare.
- 20:29SPEAKER_07: And especially it's rare for them, for for big female DJs in in hip hop where you know, Seth Cakes, you're you're in that, you're in that stratosphere of being, you know, one of the top I mean as I'm saying DJs, as I got older.
- 20:41SPEAKER_07: I'm not saying male DJs or female DJs I'm just saying DJs, right?
- 20:44SPEAKER_07: Period.
- 20:44SPEAKER_07: But people might look at it.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, as I got older, I'm sorry, I became familiar with Coco Chanel.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: That was somebody that I saw, and I'm like, oh, hmm.
- 20:54SPEAKER_06: Nice.
- 20:55SPEAKER_06: Nasty.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: This is uh this looks doable.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: Yo, Coco Chanel was gangster, man.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: She used to roll dolo to the pub or the radio, like like six crates.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: She was putting records on her own.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: She would come in with the stroller, and I used to look at her, I'm like, yo, she's about it.
- 21:12SPEAKER_05: Like she still got what is it, the the cocoa cuts, right?
- 21:14SPEAKER_05: That's what she's a beast.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: I remember her door knockers on, she's looking all pretty with the nails, she had the nails, the whole shit.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: And then, but she's coming in with records.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: You know, records, them shit used to weigh like 60, 70 pounds, though.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah.
- 21:28SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 21:28SPEAKER_05: And and like back to what Cass said, Steph is on that list, and even at work, it's only two female DJs at at a station owned by a big, big corporation.
- 21:38SPEAKER_05: And like, I commend you and I applaud you because Steph handles herself a hundred percent.
- 21:42SPEAKER_05: And like when she comes in the building, she's like, I'm about my business, but we could do a TikTok or two, but I'm here about my business, you know what I'm saying?
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: It ain't out like a thief in the night.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: So we did we did the club.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: Now I want to know that first day on radio.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: You mixing, mixing, not not forget about the Talking it, I want to know the first day you said, okay, you're gonna do uh whatever hour you're on the set.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: Like, talk to me.
- 22:06SPEAKER_05: What show was that?
- 22:07SPEAKER_05: Was it a mixed show or no?
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: No, it was 4 a.m.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: It was full, it was uh late like overnight, and I did it live and I was shaking in my boots.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: I was nervous, I was super nervous.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: Yo, did did five minutes feel like an hour?
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: What?
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: Oh my goodness.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Talk about it.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: It just I I you know, I really couldn't believe it.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: I'm like, damn, like I really made, I did it.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: I'm here, like I still remember like practicing and and just like telling myself I was gonna do this.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: Like I knew I was gonna do this, I was locked in.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: And once I lock in, I I lock in.
- 22:44unknown: Right.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: So that first night on radio, I remember, I think my best friend was with me.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: I think I had a gig the night before.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: I might have been a little, little nice.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: Uh but I didn't talk much.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: It was just straight.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: I let, you know, I let the hands talk, and I guess I did a good job.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: I'm still there.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: I'm still got a job.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: The best feeling though is like you're on, your phone is blowing up, everybody's listening.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: You're like, Oh, I don't touch my phone.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: No, I don't touch my phone.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: I'll talk to y'all after.
- 23:13SPEAKER_05: I told you she's about business, bro.
- 23:16SPEAKER_05: Like she shows up already, bro.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: I don't, yeah, no, I gotta lock in.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Even you saw me on Shade 45.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: I did not bring out my camera until I was done with my set.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: Like, I need to make sure that my set is done.
- 23:28SPEAKER_05: And I will commend Steph because not only is she DJing at work, she's also slowly has become a dope on-air personality.
- 23:35SPEAKER_05: Because I've been I've been around Steph doing the station stuff for like one three years.
- 23:39SPEAKER_05: Well, the on-air stuff for like, yo, when I gotta sub people in on the weekend, Steph is literally my number one phone call.
- 23:45SPEAKER_05: Now, like, yo, she's not, yo, Steph, I meant to hit you.
- 23:48SPEAKER_05: Like, yeah, CIE, you're doing it.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: I'm dependable.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: I'm reliable.
- 23:52SPEAKER_05: Uh, and I love that.
- 23:53SPEAKER_05: And I think DJ should understand that.
- 23:54SPEAKER_05: Like, bro, don't just show up here to DJ.
- 23:56SPEAKER_05: Do every fucking aspect of the radio station.
- 23:59SPEAKER_05: And I always encourage DJs, if you're a DJ, learn how to be an on-air personality.
- 24:03SPEAKER_05: If you're on air personality, and a board out, I don't know how to be a personality.
- 24:07SPEAKER_05: That is so.
- 24:08SPEAKER_05: I made it.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, shout out to Thea.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: She always, you know, gave me like that alley.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: Like, do you want to learn this?
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: I'm like, yes.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: Do you want to learn this?
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Do you want yes?
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: If it fits for me.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: Like, luckily, I haven't had to do anything that doesn't like align with the things that I like or anything.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: Like, nothing to compromise my judgment, nothing like that.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: Like, just alleys.
- 24:30SPEAKER_05: And then um, all the merch and all that, because you was heavy with the merch when it was like pandemic time.
- 24:34SPEAKER_05: Was that out of necessity or was it you know part of the plan?
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: We gotta week all the out before the pandemic, that was like right off the kick of it.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: I started with the socks.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Like, I just always been a person to think outside of the box.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: So when I did the socks, everybody was doing merch, but they were doing shirts, hoodies.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: I'm like, nah, I love socks.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: So I'm like, I'm gonna do my own socks.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: And everybody was so hype about my socks, and I'm like, yes.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: And then I did the air fresheners, yeah.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: Yo, she did the airplane.
- 25:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I gotta the airplane pillows, fire.
- 25:05SPEAKER_02: The airplane pillows, yo.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: Like, I respect, I respect all.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: Yup, there you go, Steph Kate.
- 25:14SPEAKER_04: But when I'm home, it looks different.
- 25:16SPEAKER_04: And we'll be right back.
- 25:22SPEAKER_06: And now, back to the show.
- 25:24SPEAKER_06: What was the first time you um heard or knew anything heavy hitters?
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: I feel like it just my whole childhood listening to Hot 97.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:35SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: I just didn't know it was such a big group.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: I only knew of like the few people.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 25:41SPEAKER_07: So so like when you became because we're in heavy hitter talk now, so when you were aware, was it a thing where you were like eventually like, oh, I want to be a part of this, or did somebody approach, like the Camillo approach and be like, yo, this is what we you what we're trying to do.
- 25:56SPEAKER_07: Or were you like, or did it appear like as a necessity?
- 25:59SPEAKER_07: Or did you even see it as a necessity?
- 26:01SPEAKER_07: Because you know, it's generationally it's the it kind of changes.
- 26:04SPEAKER_07: The younger generation came through and it was like we don't really understand or more so need to be a part of a group, right?
- 26:10SPEAKER_07: Whereas the older generation was more like understood the whole group idea.
- 26:14SPEAKER_07: So I'm interested in knowing about how you experienced it, you know what I'm saying?
- 26:18SPEAKER_07: From like the beginning to the end.
- 26:20SPEAKER_07: Yeah, your perspective.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: Okay, so for me, obviously, once I became a DJ, I saw like what the movement was all about.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: And you know, when I well, first Camillo had reached out to me about being a heavy and enough.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: I remember we went out to eat or something like that, and we had the conversation, and then Pretty Lou was always like on my ear about it, and there was just a little conflict with work at the time because there was no really heavy hitters at power, right?
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: That was like the there was not one, yeah, there was not one deal.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna let you tell the story, but I got I got something to say.
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: Go ahead.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so that was kind of like the thing, and then I'm still new at power, so I didn't really want to like you know, just I wanted to stay in in power's good grace.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: I didn't want nothing to do.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: She didn't want nobody to ask any questions, like, yo, what are you doing?
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: or with this and that.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: And I get it.
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: I get it, I get it.
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: You know, but I explained to her that this is not uh a high ninety seven thing.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: This has nothing to do with radio.
- 27:19SPEAKER_02: This is a DJ family, a crew.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: And I was, you know, I was kicking it with her and I said, Leave it, you know, listen, if you if you work at iHeart, you know, there's heavy hitters on iHeart.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: There's Mr.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: Mauricio, and I started giving her the whole just it happens to be that at power, yeah, there was nobody even even back in the days, like ProStar, he was a heavy hitter.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: He was on iHeart.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: You know, but so she was very like, she wanted to make sure she didn't fucking, you know, rattle the cage over there and and and fuck it up for us or whatever.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: I didn't want to piss anybody off.
- 27:53SPEAKER_05: Yo, I've I've been I rattled that cage as soon as I got there, bro.
- 27:57SPEAKER_05: Fuck all that.
- 27:58SPEAKER_05: I mean, I got in trouble, I don't care, but I got in wild trouble.
- 28:01SPEAKER_05: Because I booked only heavy hitters at the five o'clock mix when I got the gig.
- 28:05SPEAKER_05: So that's it.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: Mo Beats was one of the guests, was one of the guest DJs for the Angie Martinez show, and he dropped uh the the drop and then it went.
- 28:19SPEAKER_05: It was Mo Beats, it was Hollywood at that time, Big Ben.
- 28:23SPEAKER_05: Like, bro, I didn't care because even if he even if he knuffed was over there, you guys were over there, like, yo, what are you doing, bugs of nuts?
- 28:30SPEAKER_05: They fucking with it.
- 28:31SPEAKER_05: They fucking with it.
- 28:31SPEAKER_05: I don't care what they tell you.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: But respectfully, respectfully, these guys that you bringing up, they are amazing fucking.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: Like Mo Beats is Big Sean's DJ, like and and like on the set, bro, crazy.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, so you was picking official motherfuckers.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: It's not like you was like, oh, let me look up for my boy here.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: No, yeah, but you know what?
- 28:50SPEAKER_07: Right, to Seth's point, let's not act like it was a contentious because it was a time when heavy hitters went to Power 105 and it became a thing, right?
- 28:59SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 28:59SPEAKER_07: When Postal was there, when Raymond was there, when Create was there, it became a thing.
- 29:04SPEAKER_07: Because at that time of the radio wars, no, at that time it was so much associated with Hot 97, and then Self's crew was so much uh uh affiliated with Power 105, you know what I'm saying, and then Clue and them was a Power 105, and the Pit Bulls, and for a moment it was a thing.
- 29:23SPEAKER_07: So I could understand why Steph Kings would look at it and be like, I'm not trying to mess up my my ish for this, right?
- 29:29SPEAKER_05: But I I I I excuse me, Camilla, what I will say is once the people that were like the generals of the war at that fucking time on both sides, once they kind of walked away from whatever positions they had, it went away on his own.
- 29:42SPEAKER_05: Like it no, it you know what I mean?
- 29:44SPEAKER_07: But it didn't work.
- 29:45SPEAKER_07: But at the same time, it was fake because at the same time, like I would be on the phone with self.
- 29:50SPEAKER_07: Or we'd be you be talking us, uh, you know, we're talking a spin king, or this one and that one, and this is my guy.
- 29:55SPEAKER_07: You see him, and we're doing clubs together.
- 29:57SPEAKER_07: So even though the radio looked away, yeah.
- 30:01SPEAKER_05: But y'all was trying to keep a job.
- 30:02SPEAKER_05: That's the shit.
- 30:03SPEAKER_05: Y'all was ultra because we even got phone calls and emails about yo, the heavy hitters on the fly with people from Blah Bah Bah Bah Ba Station.
- 30:09SPEAKER_05: And I'd be like, shut the fuck up, leave us alone.
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: Yo, but but but but here's how it went down, though.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: So that first conversation, yeah, Steph didn't get down.
- 30:19SPEAKER_04: Mm-hmm.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: We we like put the what do you how do you say you uh kept it on chill?
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, put it on the side and we waited.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: We waited like a couple of years.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: We waited like three, four days.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: Question though question.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it wasn't happening.
- 30:32SPEAKER_07: Here's kind of like what I want to know.
- 30:34SPEAKER_07: Did you even care to be down?
- 30:35SPEAKER_07: Like, did you know about it and be like, oh, I want to be down?
- 30:37SPEAKER_07: Or were you just like, eh, dub these dudes and see what's happening?
- 30:42SPEAKER_05: They already had the conversation.
- 30:43SPEAKER_05: I remember complicated.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: I did want to be down, right?
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: I did want to be down when all the like smoke was starting to like happen.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: I'm like, damn, like maybe uh, maybe I should chill.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: And then somebody had told me, like, I can't remember who, but they were like, you know, you don't really get much out of it.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: I'm like, what?
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: Like, hell no.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: And it now, like, when I have this conversation with people, I tell them, I'm like, yo, it's not about money, it's not about none of that.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: Like, it's about the community.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: Like having a bunch of DJs that metal business shop, blah, blah, blah.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, having a bunch of DJs that have your back, that that like you need something, you could call them.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: Like, it's more of a familial thing.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Like, that's what it meant for me, and still does.
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, I'm not here to like collect a heavy hitter check.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: Like heavy hitters suck.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: How feel how good does it feel though?
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: Like, Steph, like, real talk, like, so people understand that you could just pick up the phone wherever you are in in the country, and there's a heavy hitter there, or you're like, yo, yo, you hit the chat, guys.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: Do you have uh the new uh uh or I need the the the five hottest reggaeton songs, right?
- 31:47SPEAKER_02: And you get that response right away.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: Like, you can't manage.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: Well, I went to Japan and Marty Rock was hitting me up because he was working out there, and I regret not linking with him, but I was so tired.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: But like, I didn't tell nobody I was going to Japan.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: Like, oh, like, you know, I didn't I didn't set up nothing to like me with nobody.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: I just saw that he was out there.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: I hit him up and I should have linked him, but I didn't.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: Marty, yo.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: Facts.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: Shout out to Marty Rock.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: Yo, Marty Rock, you know, he he he's another one that wants to be a heavy hitter so bad.
- 32:22SPEAKER_07: We gotta have the conversation.
- 32:23SPEAKER_07: We have to have we gotta have the conversation.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: My guy, Marty Rock.
- 32:29SPEAKER_05: Steph, how do you how do you make well because you know, besides the party stuff, and how do you make are these on your own, all these connections with D'Ameek Mills and when you was on tour?
- 32:37SPEAKER_07: Wait, we didn't even we books who we didn't get to the end of the story for the heavy like how did she end up getting that?
- 32:42SPEAKER_07: I'm sorry.
- 32:42SPEAKER_07: She said the one conversation, it went nowhere because she said, I'm dubbing that because I'm not starting any trouble at work.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: But I went to being a journalist.
- 32:49SPEAKER_05: I was being a journalist, pardon me.
- 32:50SPEAKER_01: So and yeah, like Camillo said it was like three or four years, and within those three, four years, Camilo would always be like, Hey, so how you feel about heavy hit?
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: Like he was just always him and pretty Lou were always just like checking my temperature.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: And they always told me, whenever you're ready, like, you know.
- 33:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I wanted to be organic, man.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: Like, I wasn't, you know, I wanted her, her inside to be like, oh fuck, this is what I like.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: I'm one of these motherfuckers.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: I'm a heavy, like, so I didn't want to push on her, and and I'm always about that too.
- 33:18SPEAKER_05: Like, but I just on my on my on my on my side, I wanted to step to like keep cooking, because she was cooking.
- 33:25SPEAKER_05: Like, and then by the time the convo of like, yo, it's happening, happening, when that combo came up, I was like, yeah, like shit, it's it happened five years ago, if that makes any sense, right?
- 33:36SPEAKER_05: But it's you know what I mean?
- 33:37SPEAKER_05: Because there's some people that are running running with us that is like that, like, yeah, bro, years ago, you was already there.
- 33:42SPEAKER_05: Like, we knew it was gonna happen, you know what I mean?
- 33:44SPEAKER_05: And then back to Cass's question, you're here, you're waving the heavy hitter flag.
- 33:49SPEAKER_05: Is it is it has it opened different doors or even started different conversations for you with people?
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it it definitely has.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: Like, it's definitely like, you know, promoters, it'd be like, oh, I see you're a heavy hitter.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: Uh-uh.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: I'm like, yep, that's me.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: And they like people from out of town love it.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: So it's a it's right.
- 34:06SPEAKER_05: I was gonna ask you that, right?
- 34:06SPEAKER_05: When you go out of town, you're like, oh, shit.
- 34:08SPEAKER_05: What is that out of town?
- 34:09SPEAKER_05: What is that?
- 34:11SPEAKER_05: You in this little New York bubble, when you're out of town, it's like, oh, I get it.
- 34:15SPEAKER_05: I get it.
- 34:16SPEAKER_05: I understand this shit.
- 34:17SPEAKER_05: What is the what?
- 34:20SPEAKER_05: What's the video say now?
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: She hasn't said anything.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: No.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: All is well.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: She's, you know, supporting me and whatever I do.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: I think I think we're past all that, and everybody knows what it is.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: And and it's just a different time now.
- 34:33SPEAKER_02: And and I'm not sure.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: Nah, she's been gone.
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm happy we're in this space, though, because this is, you know, at the end of the day, man, we all just fucking DJs that love to do what we do.
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: Yo, didn't he talk to her?
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: Come along.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: No.
- 34:45SPEAKER_06: I didn't talk to her.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, to Thea, no.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: I don't know about that.
- 34:47SPEAKER_06: I don't know if I did or you did.
- 34:48SPEAKER_06: I thought we did, or something, something like that.
- 34:51SPEAKER_05: She don't even know what this she's so blind to this shit.
- 34:54SPEAKER_05: It never got explained.
- 34:55SPEAKER_05: And the only people that the only people that cared about it was when Cadillac was around, like G- Spin, who's my guy when he was around.
- 35:01SPEAKER_05: And I was like, I love G-Spin.
- 35:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I love G Spin.
- 35:04SPEAKER_05: That was my guy, 100%.
- 35:05SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: I get booked in Boston a lot, and I always, he always comes out.
- 35:09SPEAKER_05: And and even when G-Spin was around, I remember I was like, yo, Mr.
- 35:12SPEAKER_05: C, what up?
- 35:13SPEAKER_05: You coming to DJ at 5 o'clock for Angie?
- 35:15SPEAKER_05: Mr.
- 35:15SPEAKER_05: C was like, I don't know, Bugs.
- 35:17SPEAKER_05: I uh I mean they don't fuck with me over there.
- 35:19SPEAKER_05: Three months later, Mr.
- 35:20SPEAKER_05: C, yeah, yeah, he it was it wasn't that nice, by the way.
- 35:23SPEAKER_05: He he he had a lot of choice words.
- 35:25SPEAKER_05: But then three months later, Mr.
- 35:26SPEAKER_05: C's like, Y'all think I'm ready for that five o'clock Angie mix.
- 35:30SPEAKER_05: So then they looking at me, I'm like, yeah, don't worry, yo.
- 35:32SPEAKER_05: I didn't care, bro, because it just made sense.
- 35:35SPEAKER_05: And I know I'm supposed to be like, uh uh, but it was like I was more about like the the culture of it.
- 35:39SPEAKER_05: Because I'm a fan of DJs when it first comes to anyway.
- 35:42SPEAKER_05: So and then knowing that Steph is DJ in it, and I hear that shit ring off at five o'clock, and when Frank is on, like that shit is great to me.
- 35:50SPEAKER_05: Because at the end of the day, and I remember we always used to say this shit.
- 35:53SPEAKER_05: We always used to be like, no one's bigger than the logo, you know what I'm saying?
- 35:56SPEAKER_05: No radio station, no con no nothing, no is bigger than the logo that is the heavy header logo.
- 36:03SPEAKER_06: Leore Cohen, formerly of Def Jam Records.
- 36:07SPEAKER_05: Oh, that right?
- 36:08SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 36:08SPEAKER_05: That's where we get that from.
- 36:09SPEAKER_06: I was just saying, yeah.
- 36:10SPEAKER_05: And then Steph, I know if uh uh uh um a few years ago, not about two years ago, man.
- 36:16SPEAKER_05: Are you still doing trying to get the beats and then work with the artists and all of that, or is that some on the side?
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: There's something on the side.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: On the far side.
- 36:26SPEAKER_05: And then don't be shy because Steph is nasty at flag football.
- 36:32SPEAKER_05: Let them know you got your own league, you got your own, etc.
- 36:34SPEAKER_05: Go ahead, talk about it.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: So I start I opened up with my partner and we started Urban Sports Entertainment, where we try to combine sporting events with entertainment events, and you know, I've been playing flag football for about since like 2018.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: And um, it's just so much fun.
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: And I love getting people together and and you know, curating these events.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: I've been to the game, I've been to the game.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: We have, we have pulled up, and you know, having the kids come.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: A lot of my events I try to do like the first hour for kids, so like uh workshops and stuff like that.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: And then uh we just did for 420 a cannibal, so different cannabis brands, you know, compete for a cash prize.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: And I've been talking to enough about doing one for the heavy hitters, so yeah, man.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: And I'm also a gamer, you know, I'll be streaming.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Um how is that, Steph?
- 37:29SPEAKER_02: During the pandemic, during the pandemic, I had little JQ, my son, playing playing with Steph Cap.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: It's like, yeah, she plays you.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I just linked them up and I let them alone.
- 37:39SPEAKER_02: I don't know what they did.
- 37:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he don't play no more.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's too cool.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: He's too cool.
- 37:46SPEAKER_05: Steph, being in that lane and gaming and all of that, is that is that something that goes hand in hand with the music?
- 37:52SPEAKER_05: Or or is this and as a female, are you or are you in another situation?
- 37:55SPEAKER_05: You're like, fuck, I gotta prove myself to these dumb fucks again.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely that situation.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: But like, I feel like gaming is worse because you're like playing with random sometimes and they'll be like, go to the kitchen, bitch, go make a sandwich.
- 38:09SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm like, yo, it's just a game.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: Like, it's never that serious to be violating.
- 38:13SPEAKER_05: But relax, my God.
- 38:15SPEAKER_01: Like, it's worse.
- 38:15SPEAKER_01: At least, like, when when I when I started DJing, I felt very welcome into the DJ community.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: I don't feel like I got any like backlash or like trash talking.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: It was probably very minimal and probably behind back doors.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: But like, I never experienced that.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: I felt like everybody was very like, oh, if you need any music, let me know, or like, oh, you should do this, or like this is what this does.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: Very like informative.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: So like I feel very blessed that my journey was like that.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: Because I know other girls have it bad.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, they get closed off and things like that.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: But I've just stayed true to myself.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: Like, I feel like in my journey as become of becoming DJ Steph Cakes, I had to figure out if I wanted to be a DJ that gets all empty up, wearing pulling up in heels and stuff like that.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: And I tried it, and that's just not me.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm just a cool girl.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: I like to just look comfy and fly, and that's how I'm gonna pull up and just do me.
- 39:12SPEAKER_05: And Steph being in YO, what was it in YO?
- 39:16SPEAKER_05: Was there any movement in YO that attracted you to the music?
- 39:18SPEAKER_05: You showed up to a teen party or whatnot?
- 39:20SPEAKER_05: Like, what was going on in YO?
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: All right, so let me put y'all on because I don't think I ever shared this with anybody, but so growing up in Yonkers, there wasn't a lot of like activities and and things like that.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: But I used to roll around with like these guys and they were promoters, like they had a DJ in the group, they had like a bartender in the group, and eventually they were doing warehouse parties here in Yonkers and like empty storage, uh like literally like like a construction site, and we were going in like through the back, like it was just crazy.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: So, long story short, I was rolling around with them, they were making all these parties and stuff like that.
- 39:56SPEAKER_01: They had one club here in Yonkers, but I was thinking about this yesterday when um when I was trying to prepare for today, and I'm like, yo, I really used to be like running up and down with these guys, putting flyers on the street, like a street team, like I was up and down with them, and I didn't care because I'm like, yeah, we're gonna party later, so fuck it.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: Like, this is whatever.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: So I used to go up and down, street team, fucking putting up flyers for the club and stuff like that.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: Is this is this hood heritage?
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 40:27SPEAKER_01: So now let me fast forward to Lost Borough, which is um, I don't even know the timestamp for this, but this is before I even was DJing.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: I want to say be like right after college, maybe, because I had nothing but time.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: But my best friend Oliver, he had a studio here in Yonkers, and this was like the beginning for us.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: Like we had an artist, we had a photographer, I was gonna be the DJ, and you know, we had like the the manager who kind of like over overwatched everything.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: So we had our studio in Yonkers, we had we were recording sessions, we had like everything.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: We were going to that studio every day, like so um, you know, we were booking people.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: We had Jadakiss has pulled up to our our studio, DMX.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: We have a picture of him there, styles, like the whole locks.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: Um we had our producers, our engineers.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: My best friend built that studio from scratch.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: We had it running.
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: Like I had when I became a DJ, like officially, I had a couple of like link ups with like eight DJs.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: I remember Mega J, Hayes, Underground, Melvin was there, like all just all of us just chilling there and just you know, DJing.
- 41:37SPEAKER_06: Damn, that's a young wave right there.
- 41:40SPEAKER_06: I love that.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: All of that, but even before all of that, when I had that studio, it it just I when I was thinking about this yesterday and I had that studio.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: I'm like, yo, I used to, if I was doing all that with like what I know now, I'd be a different type of monster because all right, we had an artist, and big shout out to Pax.
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: I feel like he's one of the best rappers that I know out here from Yonters.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: And um, I was pushing his songs.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: I remember uh Camilla played it for me.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you remember, but I was pushing out music, I was getting, you know, getting it to the ear, and I'll never forget.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: Um, he sent me a text one time of him and somebody else just telling him how he was really lucky to have me because I was putting his music in places that nobody was really like you know, playing it.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: I was really an AR and stuff like that.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: So younger me was just like foreshadowing everything for what I'm doing now, and I feel like that's why I'm not saying it's easy, but like I have no problem working hard for like thanks, baby.
- 42:36SPEAKER_06: We love that goal.
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: We love that fire.
- 42:38SPEAKER_01: That is my story.
- 42:39SPEAKER_01: So, like, my best friend Oliver is the battery behind my back.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: Y'all know, y'all see him with me every time I'm so it's just you know, I just want my team to win.
- 42:49SPEAKER_02: That's what a heavy hitter is.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: It's that easy.
- 42:52SPEAKER_05: And and I love that no one had to explain that to Steph.
- 42:55SPEAKER_05: She just got it, understood it, and we're here now, we're moving forward.
- 42:58SPEAKER_05: You know what I'm saying?
- 42:59SPEAKER_05: And what's what's yo, I I know there's a what's next, Steph?
- 43:02SPEAKER_05: What's the plan?
- 43:02SPEAKER_05: What are we doing?
- 43:03SPEAKER_05: What's the plan?
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: What's next?
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna hold y'all.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: I wrote like I wrote a movie, and I'm in the process of writing like a TV show.
- 43:13SPEAKER_05: And what does that gotta do with you?
- 43:16SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: I hit the wrong button.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: Don't drop his finger, his finger, his finger flipped.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: Muscle memory.
- 43:22SPEAKER_07: That's the muscle memory.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: I have um, yeah, no, I have a I have a couple of ideas that hopefully I bring to life soon.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: Like I also had Style and Grace where I was interviewing, it was like my interview uh series.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: But we'll come back stronger sometime in the future.
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: Right now, I'm just trying to get this gaming stuff to like really kick off.
- 43:42SPEAKER_05: That's what's it.
- 43:43SPEAKER_05: I love it.
- 43:44SPEAKER_05: We love that.
- 43:45SPEAKER_05: But there it is, y'all.
- 43:46SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 43:47SPEAKER_05: The heavy hitters DJ's podcast.
- 43:48SPEAKER_07: Big no, Stephanie doesn't get off that easy.
- 43:51SPEAKER_07: Hold on.
- 43:51SPEAKER_07: I now I have a question.
- 43:52SPEAKER_07: I started a question.
- 43:58SPEAKER_07: Uh Five.
- 44:01SPEAKER_07: Oh five?
- 44:03SPEAKER_07: It could be five.
- 44:05SPEAKER_07: She said five.
- 44:06SPEAKER_07: It could be three.
- 44:09SPEAKER_07: I'm always interested in in Steph Cake's uh age groups.
- 44:13SPEAKER_07: Cause it helps me think about how they kind of like came up.
- 44:16SPEAKER_07: Top five influential to you, most influential DJs to your style.
- 44:22SPEAKER_07: Or top five DJ DJs.
- 44:25SPEAKER_07: My top five?
- 44:26SPEAKER_07: I'll do top three.
- 44:28SPEAKER_07: It doesn't have to be like the top three best, just the people that kind of you looked at and you were like, oh man, that's fire, or that's dope.
- 44:33SPEAKER_07: Or I like to listen to them.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: Or you know Well, I meant I mentioned Rick Rock.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: Like Rick Rock is number one because, like I mentioned, I grew up literally like Rick Rock.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: So when Rick Rock met me, I wanted to be a rapper.
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: And my my bad I think my name was Caramel Dropper.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: I never knew that.
- 44:55SPEAKER_07: Kevin Every time I see you now, I'm gonna call you that it's over.
- 44:59SPEAKER_07: Caramel dropper.
- 45:00SPEAKER_01: Frank Frank still calls me dropper because he knows the story.
- 45:03SPEAKER_01: So yeah, because Kevin Hart was chocolate dropper and he was a terrible rapper.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, I'm not that bad, so I can be a caramel dropper.
- 45:10SPEAKER_06: I mean he means why.
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: Alright.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: Ready?
- 45:13SPEAKER_06: Yeah, drop something.
- 45:14SPEAKER_06: Go.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: Steph Cakes is here.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: The end is near.
- 45:17SPEAKER_01: I'm not Jada Kiss, but the champ is here.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: I like to drink beer.
- 45:21SPEAKER_02: Ooh, beer.
- 45:22SPEAKER_02: Without no fear.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: Without no fear.
- 45:25SPEAKER_01: I'm capable of going to the next page.
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: Don't matter my age.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: You know I got flow because I'm from YO.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: When I was downtown, Chris Brown was saying, yo.
- 45:35SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 45:37SPEAKER_01: That's old.

- 46:46SPEAKER_01: There's never parking there.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: I would spend more time trying to find parking than being in like practicing with him.
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: But that didn't scare me away.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: He would pull up to my gigs, he connected me with whoever I need to connect.

- 47:25SPEAKER_07: Whereas she actually talked about DJs that were personal to her and actually helped her throughout the journey.
