Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Ken's latest on Alex Bregman and Ketel Marte, Munetaka Murakami/Kyle Schwarber comp, STACKED Team USA for WBC
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:04Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal here with Elana Rizzo and Alana. We had
- 0:07Speaker 1: some exciting news this morning, the naming of Trek Scoogle
- 0:11Speaker 1: and Mason Miller to Team USA in the.
- 0:14Speaker 2: World Baseball Classic.
- 0:15Speaker 1: We'll get into this more later, but wow, that starting
- 0:19Speaker 1: rotation will be led by Cy Young winner, Trek Schooble
- 0:23Speaker 1: two tight Cy Young winner, Cy Young winner, Paul Skins,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and Joe Ryan. And you've got Clay Holmes, You've got
- 0:29Speaker 1: Matthew Boyd. You've got some relievers too, including Mason Miller.
- 0:32Speaker 1: The WBC is looking like it's going to be a
- 0:35Speaker 1: lot of fun.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Ow can I love the interest?
- 0:38Speaker 4: One of the best starters in the game, just named
- 0:40Speaker 4: one of the best closers in the game just named
- 0:43Speaker 4: to the WBC as well. We'll talk more about that momentarily,
- 0:46Speaker 4: but Ken, in this offseason period, there still are a
- 0:49Speaker 4: lot of teams that have a lot of work to do.
- 0:52Speaker 1: There are, and I'm gonna name five teams in particular, Elana,
- 0:56Speaker 1: because yes, a lot of teams we could fit into
- 0:59Speaker 1: this category.
- 1:00Speaker 2: These teams are teams that are generally.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Big market and have a lot to do, and frankly,
- 1:06Speaker 1: it's a little bit concerning where some of these clubs are,
- 1:09Speaker 1: maybe all of them for that matter.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Let's start with the Yankees.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Now, the Yankees are entering a season in which Aaron
- 1:16Speaker 1: Judge will turn thirty four years old. Guess what, Aaron
- 1:19Speaker 1: Judge is not going to be great forever. They need
- 1:22Speaker 1: to win a World Series when he is still in
- 1:24Speaker 1: his prime.
- 1:25Speaker 2: And what has happened so far.
- 1:27Speaker 1: They've signed Ryan Yarborough, They've signed onmed Razzario, both one year,
- 1:30Speaker 1: two point five million dollar contracts. They've lost Luke Weaver
- 1:35Speaker 1: and Devin Williams, two of their relievers, to the Mets
- 1:38Speaker 1: of all teams, and they still need that big bat
- 1:41Speaker 1: to go with Judge, and they still need as well
- 1:45Speaker 1: a starting pitcher because they have some questions injury wise
- 1:48Speaker 1: in that rotation. Obviously, when Gary Cole comes back and
- 1:51Speaker 1: Rodin comes back, they'll be in a better position. But
- 1:54Speaker 1: you don't know exactly how those guys are going to
- 1:57Speaker 1: perform and what they'll be capable of. So look for
- 2:00Speaker 1: the Yankees to be active. They've been on Bellinger, we
- 2:02Speaker 1: all know that, but they need to do some things,
- 2:06Speaker 1: certainly to be the team that they want to be
- 2:08Speaker 1: in twenty twenty six. The same can be said for
- 2:11Speaker 1: their biggest rival, the Boston Red Sox. We've seen the
- 2:14Speaker 1: Red Sox trade for Sonny Gray, We've seen them trade
- 2:16Speaker 1: for Johann Oviedo. But what about the offense. We've heard
- 2:21Speaker 1: them talking about adding two bats. Well, Alex Bregman is
- 2:25Speaker 1: their main target. He is still out there. There are
- 2:28Speaker 1: any number of possibilities for first base. You can trade
- 2:30Speaker 1: for Wilson Contreris, you can trade for Ezach Parades. You
- 2:34Speaker 1: didn't sign Pete Alonzo, so there are a lot of
- 2:37Speaker 1: things they can do. Bobashett is another option for the
- 2:40Speaker 1: Red Sox, but again we have yet to see them.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Alana really take.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Charge this offseason with regard to free agency, They've done
- 2:48Speaker 1: some interesting trades.
- 2:50Speaker 4: And that's what I was going to ask you, Ken,
- 2:51Speaker 4: There's only two teams right now that sit out there
- 2:54Speaker 4: that haven't made any sort of big free agent signing.
- 2:57Speaker 4: The pairing is interesting, Ken. It's the Color Rockies, which
- 3:00Speaker 4: I guess that is to be expected just based on
- 3:02Speaker 4: history of the franchise, but it's also the Boston Red Sox.
- 3:06Speaker 4: They've not done that big free agent signing now. They
- 3:08Speaker 4: missed out on Bregman, they missed out on Pete Alonzo
- 3:10Speaker 4: or not Breagan, excuse me. They missed out on Pete
- 3:12Speaker 4: Alonzo and Kyle Schwarber.
- 3:14Speaker 3: But are you.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Okay with the fact that they've done some things via trade,
- 3:18Speaker 4: just not on the free agent market.
- 3:20Speaker 2: I'm fine with it now.
- 3:21Speaker 1: It all depends, of course, Alana, with all of these teams,
- 3:24Speaker 1: where they end up and where are the Red Sox
- 3:27Speaker 1: going to end up? We don't know, but we do
- 3:29Speaker 1: know this. They saved a lot of money with the
- 3:31Speaker 1: Ralphaeld Devers trade last season, and let's.
- 3:33Speaker 2: See them put it to good use. Now.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Some other teams I want to mention here as well,
- 3:38Speaker 1: National League teams, the Mets. We talked about them a
- 3:41Speaker 1: little bit already. They get Devin Williams, they get Luke
- 3:44Speaker 1: Weaver for their bullpen, good moves. You can't really question that.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Even though they did lose Edwin Diaz, they make the
- 3:50Speaker 1: trade Nimo for Marcus Simeon, and of course they lose
- 3:53Speaker 1: Pete Alonso as well.
- 3:56Speaker 2: They have a lot of work to do.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Even though they have signed Jorge polan Go, they have
- 4:01Speaker 1: to get more offense too, and someone who is going
- 4:04Speaker 1: to compliment Juan Soto. He is younger than Aaron Judge,
- 4:07Speaker 1: but he too is in his prime years right now.
- 4:11Speaker 1: He is a guy you want to take advantage of
- 4:13Speaker 1: while he is still at this level. I expect him
- 4:16Speaker 1: to be at this level for a number of years.
- 4:18Speaker 2: But you don't want to waste any of them.
- 4:20Speaker 1: So the Mets, we talk about that for one thing,
- 4:23Speaker 1: the compliment to Soto in the lineup, but the starting
- 4:25Speaker 1: pitching is another issue. You've got Senga and MacLean and Sprote.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Those guys are not going to be heavy.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Innings guys this season, and.
- 4:33Speaker 1: You've got some spots to fill. You've got David Peterson still,
- 4:36Speaker 1: they've talked about possibly trading him along with Senga. They've
- 4:40Speaker 1: got Sean Manya coming back. There are a lot of
- 4:44Speaker 1: things going on here, a lot in play. But is
- 4:47Speaker 1: this a championship rotation right now? I would suggest that
- 4:51Speaker 1: it is not. The San Diego Padres. We've talked about
- 4:54Speaker 1: them as well. I talked about them at length on
- 4:56Speaker 1: our Monday show, Alana, because they've been talking to the Mets,
- 5:00Speaker 1: talking to all twenty nine other teams. As Aj Preller
- 5:03Speaker 1: always does, they have lost Dylan Cees, they have lost
- 5:07Speaker 1: Robert Suarez, they could lose Michael King, though they still
- 5:10Speaker 1: might be in the mix for him. He is a
- 5:12Speaker 1: free agent who likely will sign this week. So the
- 5:16Speaker 1: Padres obviously need to fortify their rotation. They were going
- 5:20Speaker 1: to be without you Darvish as well. He's out for
- 5:21Speaker 1: the season. They need to supplement their bullpen, and other
- 5:25Speaker 1: than that, they're losing Luisa Rise, so maybe they find
- 5:28Speaker 1: somebody in the infield to help them along. They're an
- 5:31Speaker 1: interesting team. Aj Preller, as we've said many times before,
- 5:34Speaker 1: capable of anything. And finally the Chicago Cubs. Now, the
- 5:38Speaker 1: Cubs have taken some steps to improve their bullpen as well,
- 5:42Speaker 1: film Aytion, Caleb Thielbar and Hoby Milner three additions that
- 5:45Speaker 1: should help them. Of course, they are a team that
- 5:49Speaker 1: has a big hole though as well, and that's Kyle Tucker.
- 5:52Speaker 1: And Kyle Tucker is a free agent not expected to
- 5:55Speaker 1: sign re sign with the Cubs, So where's their bat coming.
- 6:00Speaker 1: They've been linked to Bregman. They can do some other
- 6:02Speaker 1: things as well, but they need another hitter and they
- 6:05Speaker 1: need a starting pitcher as well. Because of just where
- 6:08Speaker 1: they are in their rotation. They could use one more,
- 6:10Speaker 1: even with Shoda Immenaga returning on the qualifying offer.
- 6:14Speaker 3: All right, let's talk about another team in the National League.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Ken.
- 6:17Speaker 4: Of course, you've discussed the Mets, You've discussed the Padres,
- 6:19Speaker 4: You've discussed the Cubs.
- 6:20Speaker 3: To a certain extent.
- 6:21Speaker 4: What about the Arizona Diamondbacks entering the twenty twenty five season, Ken,
- 6:26Speaker 4: it was the largest payroll that they have ever had.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Ken Kendrick says, let's go for it. Let's ask I'll
- 6:32Speaker 4: ask you this. Do they sign Alex Bregman? Apparently they're
- 6:35Speaker 4: in on the conversations. And does that mean they move
- 6:38Speaker 4: Katel Marte or is Katel Marte and Alex Bregman a
- 6:41Speaker 4: tandem deal?
- 6:43Speaker 1: A lot of both excellent questions, And I can't say
- 6:46Speaker 1: I know the answer is. But the fact that they're
- 6:48Speaker 1: in these free agent discussions with Bregman is fascinating. And
- 6:53Speaker 1: you remember March of twenty four they signed Jordan Montgomery
- 6:56Speaker 1: out of nowhere.
- 6:57Speaker 2: That didn't work out so well.
- 6:59Speaker 1: End of twenty five, for they signed Corbyn Burns out
- 7:02Speaker 1: of nowhere. He has had Tommy John Obviously it hasn't
- 7:04Speaker 1: worked out yet, but you still have Corbyn Burns, he
- 7:07Speaker 1: hasn't opt out after this year.
- 7:09Speaker 2: But Ken Kendrick as.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Their owner, he's a guy in his eighties.
- 7:12Speaker 2: He clearly wants to win.
- 7:14Speaker 1: And I joked, while I quoted in it nationally executive
- 7:18Speaker 1: joking about the Diamondbacks the other day saying their off
- 7:20Speaker 1: season mantra.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Is we have no money. We have no money, We
- 7:23Speaker 2: have no money.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Oh but then Ken god aggressive and that is kind
- 7:28Speaker 1: of how they operate. But yes, they are in on Bregman.
- 7:31Speaker 1: The question is, and the bigger question to me is
- 7:33Speaker 1: what happens with Marte If they get Bregman. You want
- 7:37Speaker 1: to keep Marte? You put him with Perdomo and Corbyn Carroll.
- 7:40Speaker 1: You've got a heck of a position club. But Marte
- 7:44Speaker 1: is the player they can trade to get the pitching
- 7:46Speaker 1: that they need, while Burns recovers from Tommy John, while
- 7:50Speaker 1: Justin Martinez and aj Puck in their bullpen recover from
- 7:53Speaker 1: Tommy John. So it's a fascinating team to watch. It's
- 7:57Speaker 1: an owner who is routinely a great in a way
- 8:01Speaker 1: that most other teams do not emulate in their market position. Now,
- 8:05Speaker 1: Phoenix is a big city, but in terms of baseball markets,
- 8:08Speaker 1: we don't consider it to be one of the top ones.
- 8:10Speaker 1: It's not New York, it's not LA or Chicago, even Philly.
- 8:14Speaker 1: So Ken Kendrick hats off to him. Now, they haven't
- 8:16Speaker 1: done anything yet, but the mere effort should be applauded. Ken.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Who has the pitching depth that the Arizona Diamondbacks would
- 8:24Speaker 4: be looking for in order to trade kateel Martelet's do's
- 8:28Speaker 4: take Bregman out of the equation. If Katel gets moved,
- 8:31Speaker 4: what's the pitching call?
- 8:32Speaker 3: Who has it?
- 8:34Speaker 1: Seattle has it, but I think they're more focused on
- 8:36Speaker 1: Brendan Donovan. There are other teams, the Mets being one
- 8:39Speaker 1: of them, that have it. They don't necessarily need katel Marte.
- 8:42Speaker 1: With Marcus Simeon. You can look at a team like
- 8:45Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay Rays even now, the Rays might not
- 8:49Speaker 1: want to take on six years of katel Marte, even
- 8:51Speaker 1: at a discounted rate, when it's ages thirty two to
- 8:55Speaker 1: thirty seven seasons.
- 8:57Speaker 2: I believe so.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I don't know that they be in but they do
- 9:00Speaker 1: have pitching, and there are other teams as well. It's
- 9:03Speaker 1: a fascinating guy because he is one of the best
- 9:06Speaker 1: players in the game at his position second base, no
- 9:09Speaker 1: question about that. He had the clubhouse issues last year,
- 9:12Speaker 1: which were not small if you want to read about it.
- 9:14Speaker 1: I've written about it, a lot of people have. And
- 9:17Speaker 1: he's on this contract while he's a little bit older.
- 9:20Speaker 1: It's a luxury tax hit of fourteen point six million
- 9:23Speaker 1: per season, which is for a player of that caliber,
- 9:26Speaker 1: very small. So I don't know how this turns out.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Maybe they don't sign Bregman and maybe they don't trade Marte.
- 9:33Speaker 1: That is a possible outcome here. The range of outcomes
- 9:36Speaker 1: is what is what is so fascinating Alana with the
- 9:39Speaker 1: Diamondbacks right now.
- 9:41Speaker 3: And I think the.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Biggest domino still to fall after it was Schwarber, after
- 9:45Speaker 4: it was Pete Alonso, is Alex Bregman. We know Alex
- 9:48Speaker 4: Bredman is an Arizona in the offseason. He likes the
- 9:51Speaker 4: Arizona lifestyle and the climate. I would imagine how much,
- 9:55Speaker 4: if at all, Arizona being where it is, would would
- 10:00Speaker 4: make Bregman want to go there instead of an American
- 10:03Speaker 4: League team or a national team that's spring trains in Florida.
- 10:07Speaker 1: It's a good question, and the Diamondbacks have one unique advantage.
- 10:10Speaker 1: They are the only team that trains in the same
- 10:14Speaker 1: metropolitan area where they play. No other team does that.
- 10:17Speaker 1: None of the Florida teams do that. So that is
- 10:20Speaker 1: something that is appealing to players spending spree training in
- 10:23Speaker 1: the same place where they're going to live during the season. Now,
- 10:26Speaker 1: Bregman is a little different than Corbyn Burns. Corbyn Burns
- 10:30Speaker 1: signed with the Diamondbacks in large part because he wanted
- 10:33Speaker 1: to stay in the Scottsdale Phoenix area. He just had
- 10:37Speaker 1: twins with his wife and he's got a young family.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Now Bregman does.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Too, But Bregman, from what I'm told, is more willing
- 10:44Speaker 1: to go to other places.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Would he be.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Comfortable staying with the Diamondbacks or joining the Diamondbacks, He
- 10:50Speaker 1: absolutely would be comfortable doing that. But he was quite
- 10:53Speaker 1: happy in Boston last season, and I don't know that
- 10:56Speaker 1: that geographical consideration is going to be as strong with
- 10:59Speaker 1: him as it was with Burns.
- 11:02Speaker 2: We'll see, We'll see how this all plays out, all right.
- 11:05Speaker 4: For more on the Dback's dilemma, if that's what you
- 11:07Speaker 4: want to call it, check out the latest episode of
- 11:09Speaker 4: Snake's Territory, part of the Foul Territory Network. Jesse Friedman
- 11:13Speaker 4: and Jack Summers rattle off why Bregman should sign in
- 11:16Speaker 4: the Desert Think your Teeth into multiple episodes each week
- 11:19Speaker 4: all year long. Subscribe on YouTube and share with a friend.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Snake's Territory is part of the Foul Territory Network.
- 11:28Speaker 3: As we continue here on Fair Territory.
- 11:30Speaker 4: With Ken Rosenthal, let's talk a little bit about Moonataka Murakami. Ken,
- 11:36Speaker 4: what do you know about him? Obviously, the posting window
- 11:38Speaker 4: deadline is five pm on Monday. What do you think
- 11:42Speaker 4: happens in that situation?
- 11:44Speaker 1: My colleague Will Salmon of The Athletic wrote a fascinating
- 11:47Speaker 1: story about Murakami today and I encourage everyone to read it.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And the gist of the story is this Murakami, at
- 11:54Speaker 1: twenty five years old, might be the next Kyle Schwarber.
- 11:57Speaker 2: He is mostly a DH type.
- 11:59Speaker 1: He plays first, he plays third, But from what I understand,
- 12:03Speaker 1: from what everyone is saying, he's not a great defender.
- 12:06Speaker 1: He has a lot of swing and miss in his game.
- 12:08Speaker 1: That's the concern teams have. The other concern is will.
- 12:11Speaker 2: He hit velocity?
- 12:12Speaker 1: But he has incredible power, the power that teams crave.
- 12:17Speaker 1: So if you sign him, you're betting that maybe he
- 12:21Speaker 1: is the next shorever, but maybe he doesn't want to
- 12:25Speaker 1: necessarily settle for a long term deal that will not
- 12:28Speaker 1: pay him what he thinks he might be worth. Maybe
- 12:30Speaker 1: he prefers to go short term, and maybe teams prefer
- 12:33Speaker 1: to go short term because he is the boom bus
- 12:36Speaker 1: player in this market. So what Will Roton got into
- 12:40Speaker 1: was all of those details. And this is going to
- 12:43Speaker 1: be really interesting on Monday to see exactly what happens
- 12:46Speaker 1: here if you sign him short term.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Let's say it's I don't know, just through throw.
- 12:50Speaker 1: A number out there, two years, forty million with an
- 12:52Speaker 1: opt out.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I'm just throwing numbers out there. I don't know.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Well, you still got to pay the posting fee, so
- 12:57Speaker 1: that adds to the cost on a short term deal.
- 13:00Speaker 2: When you might lose the player after one.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Or two years, that complicates matters somewhat. So it's a
- 13:06Speaker 1: fascinating player. It's a player who hit fifty six home
- 13:10Speaker 1: runs I believe in twenty twenty two and has continued
- 13:13Speaker 1: to show great power in Japan. The question is how
- 13:16Speaker 1: it's going to translate. It's always the question with Japanese
- 13:19Speaker 1: hitters who come over. Some have done quite well. I
- 13:23Speaker 1: would think it back to hed Hideki, Matsui and of
- 13:26Speaker 1: course Saya Suzuki. Now some have not done so well,
- 13:29Speaker 1: so Tsugo a couple of years ago, even Yoshida with
- 13:31Speaker 1: the Red Sox. So the pitchers generally have been better
- 13:35Speaker 1: bets coming over from Japan. Murakami represents perhaps the biggest
- 13:39Speaker 1: gamble of all of the hitters who have come so far,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and yet also he has massive, massive upside.
- 13:47Speaker 3: The upside I agree with you.
- 13:49Speaker 4: The downside Ken, in my opinion, is that are they
- 13:51Speaker 4: going to pay the posting fee and a short term
- 13:54Speaker 4: deal for a d H he doesn't play on both
- 13:56Speaker 4: sides of the ball? Does that factor into anything? Second
- 13:59Speaker 4: part of the koestion is how long can you wait
- 14:02Speaker 4: until he gets acclimated to playing baseball in the United
- 14:06Speaker 4: States versus in Japan?
- 14:08Speaker 2: A lot of fair questions both.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Now he does play third base, apparently it doesn't play
- 14:12Speaker 1: it all that well.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Maybe he can play him first.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Too, So he's not a pure DH necessarily. That's something
- 14:18Speaker 1: we should consider when we discuss the comparison to Schwarber.
- 14:21Speaker 1: He does offer some positional value if he doesn't play
- 14:24Speaker 1: the position well. He doesn't offer much positional value, but
- 14:27Speaker 1: at least right now he can man a position. And
- 14:31Speaker 1: sure the question about the posting fee is a good one.
- 14:34Speaker 1: You don't want to lose this guy right away if
- 14:36Speaker 1: you're paying the extra money to get him. So obviously
- 14:42Speaker 1: long term is the better way to go for a club,
- 14:44Speaker 1: but long term is a bigger risk as well. And
- 14:47Speaker 1: it's just a lot going on with this free agency
- 14:50Speaker 1: with him. It's just really interesting to me and I'm
- 14:54Speaker 1: fascinated to see how it all turns out.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Monday at five pm.
- 14:57Speaker 4: Yeah, a lot of fans, I'm sure have questions about
- 14:59Speaker 4: this and much more, and you have an opportunity to
- 15:01Speaker 4: ask Ken next. Will be right back after this quick
- 15:04Speaker 4: break with Grillen Ken. All right, we welcome you back
- 15:12Speaker 4: to Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal. Let me ask you this.
- 15:15Speaker 4: Ken Armand is amazing and he has a question for you.
- 15:17Speaker 4: We always appreciate him participating in these is the Twins
- 15:21Speaker 4: reported five hundred million dollar debt paid off now or
- 15:24Speaker 4: be paid off in time with the three minority ownership groups.
- 15:28Speaker 1: I don't know exactly the pay structure involved with paying
- 15:32Speaker 1: down that debt and how they're going to go about it.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Certainly the investment from these new minority owners is going
- 15:38Speaker 1: to help them with that.
- 15:39Speaker 2: That was kind of the point of this whole thing.
- 15:41Speaker 1: The real question to me is how will this affect
- 15:44Speaker 1: the operation of the actual major league team, not the
- 15:47Speaker 1: debt service. We're playing baseball here, so that's a fair question.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And at the news conference yesterday, the Twins people, the
- 15:55Speaker 1: new people.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Were asked about that.
- 15:57Speaker 1: And as we always learn in baseball writing, people always
- 16:01Speaker 1: sound great at.
- 16:02Speaker 2: The press conference.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Actually it's true in Eddy Sport and probably Eddy Walk
- 16:06Speaker 1: of Life. They all sound great at the press conference.
- 16:08Speaker 2: So they talked about.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Being relentless and fixing the team and doing these things.
- 16:13Speaker 1: It's the same situation you have with them as you
- 16:15Speaker 1: have with the Pirates and Marlins. As they talk about
- 16:18Speaker 1: spending money this offseason. Believe it when you see it.
- 16:22Speaker 1: And I'm not trying to demean the Twins new owners.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Or anything like that.
- 16:25Speaker 1: I know they had a switch in the control person
- 16:27Speaker 1: as well, a different poll ad will be in charge.
- 16:29Speaker 1: But you've got to show people now you've alienated your
- 16:33Speaker 1: fan base the last several years and now you've got
- 16:35Speaker 1: to win them back.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Let me ask you this, then, will it change anything?
- 16:41Speaker 4: I mean, is that only time you know, time will
- 16:43Speaker 4: tell if anything changes. I mean, it's still the same family,
- 16:46Speaker 4: but maybe not. I mean, you know, Hank Steinbrenner runs
- 16:49Speaker 4: the team very different than George Steinbrenner does. So will
- 16:52Speaker 4: if anything change.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Ken, It's hard to say. It's hard to know a
- 16:56Speaker 1: lot it until we see these guys in action. Now,
- 16:58Speaker 1: one thing did change, I guess this offseason, if you
- 17:02Speaker 1: want to look at it this way, there were major
- 17:05Speaker 1: sellers at the deadline.
- 17:06Speaker 2: We know that they.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Traded guys beyond even the ones on short control. They
- 17:11Speaker 1: traded some players with long term control.
- 17:13Speaker 2: And it stood to.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Reason going into this offseason, even though they were hiring
- 17:17Speaker 1: a new manager, Derek Shelton, that they might continue tearing down.
- 17:21Speaker 1: They haven't done that, they do not plan to do that.
- 17:23Speaker 1: They've signed Josh Bell, they plan to keep Joe Ryan
- 17:26Speaker 1: and Pablo Lopez and Byron Buxton, and that alone seems
- 17:30Speaker 1: to me to be an encouraging sign. But now you've
- 17:33Speaker 1: got to build around them. You've got to build an
- 17:35Speaker 1: entire bullpen. Pretty much because you gutted it at the deadline.
- 17:39Speaker 2: It's not going to be easy.
- 17:40Speaker 1: For them to build a competitive club. But they're in
- 17:42Speaker 1: the AL Central, which is endlessly forgiving.
- 17:46Speaker 2: They've got a shot.
- 17:48Speaker 4: Yeah, so far, both of those Central divisions tend to
- 17:50Speaker 4: be forgiving. The next question is in regards to a
- 17:53Speaker 4: team in the Central Division, the NL Central. Ken talking
- 17:56Speaker 4: about the Chicago Cubs. Lots of questions, of course about
- 17:59Speaker 4: the Cubs. Mike G fifteen says, Ken, great notes today
- 18:02Speaker 4: from you and Patrick. It seems he's now saying Cubs
- 18:05Speaker 4: are content with current pitching unless deal fits their small
- 18:08Speaker 4: market spreadsheets. My paraphrase, that's Mike's paraphrase. Do they at
- 18:12Speaker 4: least feel shame? Mike is bummed, He's upset about his cubbies.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Ken, Mike's not alone among Cubs fans, and there's been
- 18:19Speaker 1: a lot of frustration over the past several years with
- 18:22Speaker 1: the way they've gone about it, with the spending and
- 18:24Speaker 1: just their approach in general. It's not an all out
- 18:28Speaker 1: approach by any stretch of the imagination. They ultimately might
- 18:32Speaker 1: just want to play the market for starting pitching. But
- 18:35Speaker 1: in my opinion, there's a guy like Zach Gallan who's
- 18:38Speaker 1: out there, There's Rangers Suarez who's out there. There are
- 18:40Speaker 1: others now some of them are going to go for
- 18:42Speaker 1: prices that might be beyond the cub's comfort level and
- 18:45Speaker 1: other teams comfort level for that matter. That's fine, but
- 18:50Speaker 1: they do need one more starter, and they.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Have a decent rotation.
- 18:55Speaker 1: But to me, one more and one more good one
- 18:59Speaker 1: would really make him that much more solid. And they've
- 19:01Speaker 1: got to address the offense as well, because you lose
- 19:04Speaker 1: Kyle Tucker. I know he didn't have a great second half.
- 19:06Speaker 2: I know he was hurt, but my.
- 19:08Speaker 1: Goodness, look at what they were with Tucker in the
- 19:11Speaker 1: first half.
- 19:13Speaker 4: All right, I appreciate the questions. As always, guys, you
- 19:15Speaker 4: can do it again with Ken on Monday. We're going
- 19:18Speaker 4: to be back with Dude and Dork of the Week

- 20:10Speaker 5: Foul Territory Network baseball the way it should be covered.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Dude, dude, dude.
- 20:22Speaker 4: I was love and we can give out some praise. Ken,
- 20:24Speaker 4: who is your dude of the week?
- 20:26Speaker 1: My dude of the week is our former colleague at
- 20:29Speaker 1: MLB Network and now Team USA manager for the second
- 20:32Speaker 1: time in the World Baseball Classic.
- 20:34Speaker 2: That would be Mark de Rosa.
- 20:36Speaker 1: And the reason he's the Dude of the week is
- 20:38Speaker 1: because he has worked really hard to get commitments from
- 20:41Speaker 1: a number of superstar players for the team. And what
- 20:45Speaker 1: we've seen is a reaction to the twenty twenty three
- 20:48Speaker 1: WBC when players who didn't participate felt like, man, I
- 20:53Speaker 1: missed out on something, and I heard it from a
- 20:55Speaker 1: number of players after that. It was such an exciting tournament.
- 20:58Speaker 1: So you've seen commitments now from Aaron Judge, from Paul Skins,
- 21:01Speaker 1: from Trek Scoogle, and DeRosa has worked hard to secure them.
- 21:05Speaker 1: The players deserve credit too, but Mark de Rosa for
- 21:08Speaker 1: that is my Dude of the week.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Absolutely, the excitement is there, people are interested. Team USA
- 21:14Speaker 4: is stacked. I love the WBC. For me, the dude
- 21:17Speaker 4: of the week is baseball in general, and I love
- 21:20Speaker 4: the fact and Sarah Langs did a great job of
- 21:22Speaker 4: pointing this out as well. Of course, our sport has
- 21:25Speaker 4: no cookie cutter reason for success. You take a look
- 21:27Speaker 4: at the graphic and it's like, now you have trey
- 21:31Speaker 4: Ya Savage and then Tyler Rogers, who have the most
- 21:35Speaker 4: unbelievable release points in the league. Look at this, Trey
- 21:38Speaker 4: Is Savage high and of course Tyler Rogers way low.
- 21:42Speaker 4: You take a look at the release points, the arm angles,
- 21:44Speaker 4: all the things that they're now teammates. Just goes to
- 21:46Speaker 4: show you there's no cookie cutter way to have success
- 21:49Speaker 4: in this league. Baseball. You are my dude of the week.
- 21:53Speaker 4: All right, time now.
- 21:54Speaker 3: For the dork of the week.
- 22:04Speaker 1: All right, this is kind of a preemptive strike, dro
- 22:09Speaker 1: I just named your dude of the week.
- 22:11Speaker 7: But here's the deal. You gotta win with this team.
- 22:14Speaker 7: You gotta win with this team, or you're going to
- 22:16Speaker 7: be the dork of the week. I don't want to
- 22:18Speaker 7: name you dork of the week. You've done a great job,
- 22:20Speaker 7: as I said, put it together, But now comes crunch time. Now,
- 22:24Speaker 7: kind of kidding around.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Obviously, there are going to be a lot of other
- 22:27Speaker 1: good teams in the tournament, and we know from the
- 22:30Speaker 1: last time this tournament was held the difficulty du Rosa
- 22:34Speaker 1: and his pitching coaches face because teams put restrictions on
- 22:37Speaker 1: pitchers and it is a very difficult.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Thing to manage.
- 22:40Speaker 1: So I'm kind of kidding around saying Dero could be
- 22:44Speaker 1: Dork of the Week.
- 22:44Speaker 2: But the challenge lies ahead.
- 22:46Speaker 1: And let's face it, the team is the most talented
- 22:49Speaker 1: team USA we've ever seen.
- 22:51Speaker 2: So it's going to be cool to see this all unfold.
- 22:54Speaker 4: Yes, hopefully it's not the major league clubs that ended
- 22:56Speaker 4: up being the dork of the week because they don't
- 22:58Speaker 4: let certain players play and all of the.
- 23:03Speaker 3: My dork of the week and I love him.
- 23:04Speaker 4: But Scott Harris at the Detroit Tiger's Kenny was a
- 23:07Speaker 4: bunch of word sylad saying a bunch of things without
- 23:09Speaker 4: saying anything at all. That the team understands. It's the
- 23:11Speaker 4: same names, but it's not the same team, and the
- 23:14Speaker 4: team is going to be better either individually or collectively.
- 23:17Speaker 4: Go out, spend some money, sign some guys. Those things
- 23:20Speaker 4: are so funny though, Like I'm going to tell you
- 23:21Speaker 4: a bunch of stuff and not tell you anything all
- 23:23Speaker 4: at the same time. All Right, if you're still with us,
- 23:26Speaker 4: you are watching us on YouTube. Ken the Phillies are
- 23:29Speaker 4: banking on a turnaround from Adolice Garcia. No longer a Ranger,
- 23:34Speaker 4: he is now at Citizens Bank Park. How do you
- 23:36Speaker 4: see this plane out?
- 23:38Speaker 1: This is a really interesting signing and they're banking, as
- 23:42Speaker 1: you said, Alana, on him having a bounce back year.
- 23:45Speaker 2: He's had two down years in a row. Offensively.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Now you put him with Kevin Long think Phillies renowned
- 23:50Speaker 1: hitting coach that could help. And he's friends with Edmundo Sosa.
- 23:54Speaker 1: He's got some foundation there for success. And he's also
- 23:59Speaker 1: a high energy, charismatic, upbeat guy. Who you would think
- 24:03Speaker 1: would stand the decent chance of kind of making a comeback,
- 24:07Speaker 1: just on who he is and the way he approaches things.
- 24:10Speaker 2: But it's a big bet.
- 24:11Speaker 1: And you see the story by Charlotte Barnes yesterday in
- 24:13Speaker 1: The Athletic about Garcia and about what the Phillies see
- 24:16Speaker 1: in him. To me, the bigger gamble and he's a
- 24:20Speaker 1: gamble Garcia, But the bigger gamble is playing Justin Crawford
- 24:23Speaker 1: or rookie and committing to him in center field without
- 24:27Speaker 1: him ever having played a major league game.
- 24:29Speaker 2: He's talented, They'll hit him at the bottom of the lineup.
- 24:31Speaker 1: He's Carl Crawford's son, by the way, and he's a
- 24:33Speaker 1: guy who they expect will do some things. But to me,
- 24:37Speaker 1: for a team of that caliber to commit like that
- 24:40Speaker 1: to a rookie at a prime defensive position, that is
- 24:44Speaker 1: a risk. And it's going to be really interesting to
- 24:47Speaker 1: see how this outfield plays out. I believe it was
- 24:49Speaker 1: Mike Petriello of MLB dot Com the other day who
- 24:52Speaker 1: said this could be one of the worst outfields in
- 24:54Speaker 1: the major leagues. Garcia will replace Nick Castianos. We'll see
- 24:58Speaker 1: how it all plays out. But the Phillies could use
- 25:02Speaker 1: one more right handed hitting outfielder to pair platoon with
- 25:05Speaker 1: Brandon Marsh, then I think we'll be looking at something better.
- 25:08Speaker 1: But there is a lot of risk in that outfield.
- 25:11Speaker 1: That's I remember.
- 25:12Speaker 4: I remember when Justin Crawford was running around the Dodgers
- 25:15Speaker 4: clubhouse Ken when he was about six or seven years old,
- 25:18Speaker 4: when CC came over from Boston and became a Los
- 25:21Speaker 4: Angeles Dodger. And now he's going to be a starting
- 25:24Speaker 4: outfielder for or x starting player for the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 25:28Speaker 4: That just means that I'm old, Ken Rosenthal. We appreciate
- 25:31Speaker 4: everybody watching and listening today. Foul Territory is next, Eric Kratz,
- 25:35Speaker 4: Jason Kipnis, Scott Braun. They're going to welcome in Robert Murray,
- 25:38Speaker 4: Paul Hoyins, and Zach Rosenthal. No relation to our Ken
- 25:41Speaker 4: Rosenthal far returns on Monday. Ken is going to be
- 25:44Speaker 4: back with you at ten am Eastern. Have a great week, everybody,
- 25:46Speaker 4: take care
