Latest / Rusty's Garage / Drivers Only: Episode 1 with Thomas Randle, David Reynolds and Ryan Wood
Transcript
- 0:02A Listener production.
- 0:04Well, I never thought I would see the day.
- 0:06I'm going to get kicked out of the studio and arguably with good reason.
- 0:10This is a little bit like handing the kids the keys to your favourite car.
- 0:14Bit of trepidation, but we are enormously proud here at Listener to be partnering again with Supercars, but this time on a podcast project that has been in the works for a little while.
- 0:24Thank you.
- 0:42Download the listener app, listen for free.
- 0:44You can find it on all your regular podcast platforms.
- 0:46All you've got to do is search for Rusty's Garage and look for the Supercars Drivers Only episodes.
- 0:52It's also going to be published on the Supercars YouTube channel.
- 0:55So lots of places to enjoy it.
- 0:57Who is in the driver's seat for this road trip?
- 1:00I hear you asking.
- 1:02Thomas Randall alongside that maniac, David Reynolds, and they're joined by a guy with a bit of spark, a bit of zing, a bright young star in Ryan Wood who's quite funny too.
- 1:11So pluck a gear, boys, as they say.
- 1:14Good luck and off you go.
- 1:16Wait, talk again?
- 1:17Hello.
- 1:18Yeah, that's sort of better.
- 1:18Oh, that's hello, hello, hello.
- 1:20Wait, what's this left one do?
- 1:22Nothing.
- 1:22Can you talk?
- 1:23Hello.
- 1:23Oh.
- 1:24Is that clear?
- 1:25Very good.
- 1:25That's pretty good.
- 1:26Perfect.
- 1:29Dude, that's disgusting.
- 1:30Hiked out.
- 1:31Why?
- 1:31Because I think I'm starting this thing.
- 1:33All right.
- 1:33All right.
- 1:34Are we ready?
- 1:34Yeah, I think so.
- 1:36All right.
- 1:37Okay.
- 1:38Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first episode of...
- 1:42What was it called again?
- 1:43It's actually not the first.
- 1:45Well, it's not.
- 1:45Okay, let's sort of do this.
- 1:47You can call this episode one.
- 1:48I forgot what it was called.
- 1:49We had episode zero.
- 1:50No, the Drivers Only.
- 1:50Drivers Only podcast.
- 1:52Okay.
- 1:52Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first episode of the Drivers Only podcast.
- 1:58First, let me just introduce who's on the show.
- 2:00So we've got Mr. David Reynolds for tradie beer, new lawn,
- 2:07Team 18 Racing, Kenworth.
- 2:08I'm just reading off your shirt here.
- 2:10And then we've got the WAU rookie, Mr. Ryan Wood, who at the last minute threw his jacket on.
- 2:16So pleasure to have you both on here, boys.
- 2:20Thanks for inviting me, Randall.
- 2:22You don't invite us, do you?
- 2:24I mean, I can if you want.
- 2:27We actually did a pilot before, didn't we?
- 2:29So this is our second attempt.
- 2:30What happened to the first one?
- 2:31Do you know?
- 2:33It was not Scott Pye's idea in terms of this podcast.
- 2:38Would you agree?
- 2:39Well, we did this.
- 2:41The first one was me, you, and Nick.
- 2:43It was April.
- 2:45Oh, so I've replaced Nick.
- 2:46Basically, yeah.
- 2:47Again, yeah.
- 2:50Oh, straight away.
- 2:51Yeah, it's there.
- 2:51I hope Nick doesn't listen to this.
- 2:53He probably will.
- 2:54Hey, Nick.
- 2:55He probably will.
- 2:56So we did actually film an episode the week after.
- 2:58Which they cut out most of it, actually.
- 3:00Yeah, and why was that, David?
- 3:01Well, I got a bit loose on the mic and they cut out a lot of my things I was saying, so...
- 3:06Well, apparently it's not PG.
- 3:08That doesn't sound like you at all.
- 3:09I know.
- 3:10Well, this is take two.
- 3:11So- I'll pipe down.
- 3:13Let's roll back the clock to Darwin.
- 3:15So not too long ago, how did we enjoy our weekends up there on and off the track?
- 3:21Mate, I love Darwin.
- 3:21I have the best time every time I go there.
- 3:23Coming from Melbourne, we always talk about the weather being dog shit down here, which it is.
- 3:27And then you step off the plane in Darwin, which you would have done for the first time.
- 3:31It's like your
- 3:31on a holiday, just like beautiful blue sky, 30 degrees every day.
- 3:35It's just a cool vibe.
- 3:37I really love the place.
- 3:38And then we go racing, which is, you know, the track's quite cool.
- 3:41That's the first time you've been there yet, mate?
- 3:43It's a pretty cool place, actually.
- 3:45And how did you find it?
- 3:46Yeah, the track itself is actually quite technical.
- 3:49I probably underestimated it before.
- 3:51How hard it was.
- 3:51Yeah, yeah, and then rolled out for practice one and got a bit of a culture shock.
- 3:55Even the heat, like, you know, trying to do like 10 laps and you're like, wow, this gets pretty warm pretty quickly.
- 4:02And unfortunately my cool suit wasn't pre-cooled for the first race either.
- 4:07So that was quite eventful.
- 4:09When you say pre-cooled.
- 4:11Yeah, you know how they like cool it down before you jump in and it's usually.
- 4:14Well, in the Chev we can't have that.
- 4:16Oh.
- 4:17Because we've got those like, those flame out issues.
- 4:20Like we don't have enough.
- 4:22cranking amps or something to, it's like a voltage drop issue that we have in our cars.
- 4:26We actually.
- 4:27Oh, that's why you guys are so quick in a straight line.
- 4:29Yeah.
- 4:29Is that related to why the chevs are blowing up?
- 4:32Not related to why they're blowing up.
- 4:34It's just why they don't start.
- 4:35What's actually going on there?
- 4:36Why are the engines?
- 4:37I saw there's a few engine changes Saturday night.
- 4:39Yeah.
- 4:39Absolutely no idea.
- 4:41Yours have been fine?
- 4:42I think so.
- 4:42Yeah.
- 4:43I've had no dramas.
- 4:44I would just say it's not fun.
- 4:45Just get a new one.
- 4:46Why?
- 4:47Just say that.
- 4:48I don't know.
- 4:48I need time for a new engine, a new donk.
- 4:50It's fine.
- 4:50Happy.
- 4:51Okay.
- 4:52Very good.
- 4:52So, otherwise, we're back on topic.
- 4:55I had a great weekend.
- 4:57It was really fun.
- 4:57Where'd you end up?
- 4:58I was like 6th and 12th, I think.
- 5:01On Sunday, yeah.
- 5:02Yeah, you were beside me, and I was trying to keep you at bay.
- 5:05You're doing well.
- 5:06I was racing you guys at one point, too, just so.
- 5:10Did you see this asshole?
- 5:12Yes, yes.
- 5:14What did you do wrong?
- 5:14I think you needed to tune up.
- 5:16Nah, I was just racing hard because I thought I was... Oh, you weren't racing hard.
- 5:20You were just like taking the piss.
- 5:22The restart.
- 5:23Yeah, the restart.
- 5:23So the restart's always a drama there.
- 5:25Always a drama, isn't it?
- 5:26That's shocking.
- 5:27First time.
- 5:27It's my first time.
- 5:28That's one thing they need to do is send the safety car, I don't know, the start-finish line because it just never gets back in time to pit lane.
- 5:34So it's always a fuck up the start.
- 5:36And I think that Porsche's got a bit of mumbo.
- 5:39Who's driving it?
- 5:41It's Jason.
- 5:42Is it still Jason?
- 5:43Oh, I'm Jason.
- 5:43Get up it.
- 5:44Yeah, get up it.
- 5:45Or you're getting replaced like we are.
- 5:47We're not fast enough.
- 5:48Yeah.
- 5:48So anyway, it's always a cluster.
- 5:51And there's always like six cars wide.
- 5:53And this bloke on the outside just must have gassed it going, oh, here's my opportunity.
- 5:57Is this what you thought?
- 5:58What position was this for?
- 5:59Yeah.
- 5:59Yeah, 16th.
- 6:00I reckon it was worse than that.
- 6:02It was like 19th or 20th or something.
- 6:03Yeah, mate, that was the highest I was all weekend.
- 6:06So I'm like, I didn't be past five cars around the outside and just like head and move on waters around the outside.
- 6:12And I was like, yeah.
- 6:13Oh, that was you on the replay.
- 6:15I was like, pumping my chest in the seat.
- 6:17I was like, yeah, what?
- 6:19And then he just ran me wide at the hip and I was like, oh.
- 6:22And then because he weren't, like his car wasn't very fast, so he's like backed us all up and left the train.
- 6:28I'm like spewing on the road.
- 6:29No, I was behind you, so you were happy because I was like blocking Waters, you and a few others.
- 6:35Mate, you, like on that restart, you were trying to get like pushing me at the hairpin.
- 6:39I'm like, mate, I'm like, just piss off.
- 6:41Yeah, you're in the mirror.
- 6:42He's giving me the fingers.
- 6:43No, he gave me the hand.
- 6:45Really?
- 6:45Yeah, he's like full go-karts.
- 6:46I love that.
- 6:46What are you doing?
- 6:47Yeah, what are you doing?
- 6:49You were struggling.
- 6:50Did you undo your belts and tuck down the straight?
- 6:52Yeah, obviously.
- 6:52It's a long straight, so we need everything we can get at the moment.
- 6:55I got in trouble.
- 6:55I undid my belts after my quali lap.
- 6:57What do you mean?
- 6:59I just was like crossed the start-finish line and backed off and undid my belts.
- 7:03You dickhead.
- 7:04Why would you do such a thing?
- 7:05I didn't even realize I'd done it until Tim Edwards came and gave me a tune-up, which is well-deserved.
- 7:12Why did you?
- 7:13I don't know.
- 7:13Is this just part of the Ryan Wood little features?
- 7:15I looked down at my dash and I'm like, oh, no.
- 7:17And so it's just like one of those frustration things.
- 7:21Releasing disappointment.
- 7:23You know who could put a protest in for that?
- 7:24Triple A.
- 7:25Triple A, yeah.
- 7:25Speaking about protests and Triple A, what was the go with that one in the shootout on Sunday?
- 7:30I don't know.
- 7:31Seems a bit bizarre.
- 7:32Yeah.
- 7:32I thought it was good.
- 7:33I thought it was good, yeah.
- 7:34I've never seen someone catch someone like that before.
- 7:36But it was happening quite a bit in that session.
- 7:38Yeah, it was happening with others too.
- 7:39I think Golding caught Murray as well in the shootout.
- 7:43So I think there's quite a few issues.
- 7:46I think the track's just so small.
- 7:47I don't know.
- 7:48Maybe we should check our shootout laps.
- 7:50Because I noticed when on the Saturday... Yeah, I didn't do one at the time.
- 7:54Did I?
- 7:54I noticed on the Saturday when the car passes you and you're sitting in the pits at the end of pit lane waiting, you wait for like 30 seconds and it seems like an eternity, doesn't it?
- 8:02Maybe that cool down that was just so...
- 8:04I don't know.
- 8:04You wait for 30 seconds?
- 8:05That was just my transporter watching you guys.
- 8:10You poor boy.
- 8:12We've all had shit weekends.
- 8:14I thought it was funny.
- 8:15I think the gamesmanship was cool and all the banter and stuff online before the race and then Chad's had a shocking race, so it wasn't that funny.
- 8:23Did Will even notice?
- 8:24I don't think he even noticed it.
- 8:26No.
- 8:27When you're in the shootout, you're not really looking behind anyway, so you're always looking forward.
- 8:30You have no reason to look behind.
- 8:31Exactly, yeah.
- 8:33Not like in qualifying when we're all going, absolutely.
- 8:36Nuts on the outlap.
- 8:39Are we talking about the outlap, Thomas?
- 8:41Yeah.
- 8:41Yeah, not on the outlap.
- 8:41Things got a bit racy.
- 8:43They might have crashed into me.
- 8:44Really?
- 8:45No, mate, we didn't touch.
- 8:47You 100% we touched.
- 8:48No, I was down here inside.
- 8:50You kissed, you didn't touch.
- 8:51That's because like Saturday you sprayed it at turn one on your lap and then you like hardly let Cam or I through.
- 8:58You're like, oh, I'm just going to make it really difficult for them on their laps.
- 9:02You've done this a few times this year, haven't you?
- 9:03Yeah, I'm a racer, mate.
- 9:04No, I don't know.
- 9:05He's one of those ones.
- 9:06He's an asshole.
- 9:06That's just he is.
- 9:07Yeah, I literally am.
- 9:08We're on our laps and you're just like.
- 9:09The funniest part is like I ran off and I'm like, how can I like make people else not have a good lap?
- 9:16You generally get done for that.
- 9:17Yeah, I didn't though, so.
- 9:19Oh, really?
- 9:20I'm glad you got done for like passing five cars at the freestyle.
- 9:23So what did you guys get up to after the race on Sunday?
- 9:26I managed to change my flight Sunday night.
- 9:29So that must have been expensive.
- 9:31Yeah.
- 9:31No, it wasn't actually.
- 9:32Like I ended up flying to Brisbane instead of Melbourne and hanging there for a couple of days.
- 9:37There was all that drama going on.
- 9:37Yeah, yeah.
- 9:38So it was good.
- 9:39It was my first time in Darwin.
- 9:40So I spent that Monday morning just having a look around, went to the crocodile like thing in the middle.
- 9:46Crocosaurus Cove.
- 9:47Yeah, the one in the middle.
- 9:48Oh, Crocadillus?
- 9:48Yeah, I don't know.
- 9:49It's the one in the middle of the city.
- 9:50Oh, the marina?
- 9:51Yeah.
- 9:51Crocosaurus Cove.
- 9:51Yeah, the city.
- 9:52I went there on Monday.
- 9:53What time did you go?
- 9:55Ah, what about, as soon as it opened.
- 9:56Oh, yeah, I was down in the afternoon.
- 9:58Yeah, it was like the crocodiles have calmed down since then.
- 10:01And then Chaz and I.
- 10:02They've been in captivity forever.
- 10:03They don't even bother trying to, like, go for the meat.
- 10:06Yeah, Chaz and I went to that lagoon thing, like the lazy river thing with all the waves.
- 10:11It's just in the middle of.
- 10:12Oh, yeah, down with all the hotels.
- 10:15Yeah, so we just went and chilled in the pool and it was good.
- 10:18Yeah, Sunday night.
- 10:21Wouldn't know anything.
- 10:21He wouldn't know anything.
- 10:22He forgot.
- 10:23He got that shit face.
- 10:24No, I actually didn't.
- 10:25No, I got there and then I was like, why am I even here?
- 10:28There's nothing to celebrate.
- 10:29Did he go to Mindle Beach Markets?
- 10:31No.
- 10:32No, that's cool.
- 10:32I went there on Sunday night with my kids and bought some food and mucked around and watched the sunset on the beach.
- 10:37And yeah, it was awesome.
- 10:39Cool.
- 10:39So what do you think on the weekend of the format?
- 10:43What are we thinking of the formats at the moment?
- 10:45I think for me, like personally, I don't like the hour-long practice session.
- 10:50Why not?
- 10:52I don't enjoy like, you know, when you do a practice session and you've got 30 minutes and you've done your practice session and then you jump out and you debrief and then the same day you usually have another 30 minute practice session.
- 11:03I think from a perspective of trying to develop your car and get better, I feel like that's...
- 11:10I'll find it the other way.
- 11:11Yeah.
- 11:12For me, like learning the track as well, like I feel like I get more out of jumping out of the car, looking at some vision and looking at, you know, some data other than just the whole hour you're just stuck in the race car.
- 11:25Like you're able to process it.
- 11:27There's a triple crown, but it was two races.
- 11:29Yeah.
- 11:30I don't know.
- 11:31It's interesting.
- 11:32It's a bit weird.
- 11:33Yeah.
- 11:34Yeah.
- 11:34I don't really get that.
- 11:36And then the practice in the morning and stuff, I didn't.
- 11:38Don't like the practice in the morning?
- 11:40Nah, I didn't.
- 11:40You just want to roll straight into qualifying?
- 11:42Yeah.
- 11:43That's what we normally do.
- 11:44I actually like the hour practices.
- 11:45Professionals.
- 11:46More than the two half-hour ones because the two half-hour ones or two 20-minute ones or whatever they give us is just too hectic.
- 11:51You don't have enough time to analyze and sit down and like actually during the session try some things.
- 11:58What if instead of that practice on Saturday, we got rid of that, brought quality forward and then we actually just have more racing?
- 12:07Do you think we should be doing more racing and less practice?
- 12:10Yes and no, like...
- 12:13I don't know.
- 12:14It's a confusing topic.
- 12:15I like doing...
- 12:15It's a long way to go.
- 12:16Like, we go to Perth and we go to Darwin and we do, like, two six-year races.
- 12:21But the idea is you do, like, one race on the Sunday and then that person is the winner of the weekend, if you know what I mean, instead of having two winners.
- 12:28But...
- 12:29If you know what I mean, there's too many.
- 12:31There's like six podium getters, there's two winners, there's too much.
- 12:35But like if you win the – so if they do three races, if you win the Sunday morning race – It's nothing.
- 12:42It's like winning a heat in a go-kart race.
- 12:45Yeah, it's nothing.
- 12:45It's nothing.
- 12:46Mate, we did something way before you came along.
- 12:49It was called a 60-60 race.
- 12:50What was that?
- 12:51So we did like- Oh, that was great.
- 12:52That's like stages in NASCAR almost.
- 12:54It was shit house.
- 12:55It was terrible.
- 12:56So we had like a race start.
- 12:57We qualified for a race start and then race start to finish.
- 13:00That was the first 60.
- 13:01And then you park it.
- 13:02Then you park the car.
- 13:03Then you go out again and then race for another 60 Ks, which is that determines the winner.
- 13:09So you do all this shit in between.
- 13:11It was just pointless.
- 13:13It was just the biggest, stupidest thing I've ever been a part of.
- 13:15Is that when you had like double file restarts as well?
- 13:18I remember they brought that into Adelaide and then Brydie got rolled.
- 13:22They were the best.
- 13:22There was so much chaos.
- 13:23Yeah, it was an acceleration zone.
- 13:25That's right.
- 13:25It was so much chaos going on.
- 13:27It was actually fun though.
- 13:28Yeah.
- 13:30But it is fun.
- 13:31I can imagine him on the restart.
- 13:32He'd be first by turn one every time.
- 13:35Do you not agree, though?
- 13:37When there's a bit of, like, when it's unfamiliar, the racing for some reason, because everyone's exploring and stuff like that, it is more exciting usually.
- 13:46A little bit.
- 13:46The AGP races are always quite entertaining because they're different.
- 13:50It's something we're not used to.
- 13:51It's a hard track.
- 13:52It's a very hard track.
- 13:53So what if we just scrap practice altogether?
- 13:55Just roll out qualifying.
- 13:57I had this conversation the other day with someone, and they were up for it.
- 13:59I think it was with Brody.
- 14:01Really?
- 14:01He's like, yeah.
- 14:02Sure, I'd love to do it.
- 14:03That'd be fun.
- 14:04I think doing that at specific events, what if you had more test days, but then just rolled into quality?
- 14:10And more test days, yeah.
- 14:10I don't think we've got enough test days.
- 14:12But we did just supplement.
- 14:13Yeah, dude, we've got three test days.
- 14:14It's ridiculous.
- 14:15And one of them.
- 14:15Testing at other places as well.
- 14:17Unless you're a rookie.
- 14:19You get the two-year rookie card.
- 14:21Yeah, unless you finish in the top 10.
- 14:24Don't get me started on that one either.
- 14:27That makes no sense either.
- 14:28What's that?
- 14:29If you finish in the top 10 as a rookie.
- 14:31Oh, yeah, you don't get to.
- 14:33You're not a rookie for the next year, but if you don't, you're still a rookie for two years, if you know what I mean, which makes absolutely no sense.
- 14:39And then you get the extra days.
- 14:41Yeah, so you become a rookie twice.
- 14:43So the first year of being a rookie, I think you can go to other tracks, but the second year, if you're still a rookie, you can't.
- 14:48Yeah.
- 14:48I don't know, it's all.
- 14:49So you're not a rookie, really.
- 14:50No, you're not, but you get the extra days.
- 14:52You get one day somewhere.
- 14:53Oh, do you?
- 14:53Yeah.
- 14:54Yeah.
- 14:54I think we need more tyres for the test days.
- 14:56This is confusing.
- 14:57My last few test days I've just unused.
- 15:00Used, yeah.
- 15:00Just used tyres.
- 15:01That's how it always has been though.
- 15:03To be honest, I thought I was rolling in this year and every test day was greens and it was going to be mega.
- 15:08No, it's not.
- 15:09And then I turned up at like my first practice and got like two sets of greens and I'm like,
- 15:14oh, that's it.
- 15:15Yeah, where's the rest of this?
- 15:17So you get none.
- 15:18You get zero.
- 15:18It's just a cascading thing, I think.
- 15:20But it's like how much is it for everyone?
- 15:23It's the cheapest part on the car.
- 15:24So put the formats aside.
- 15:26Calendar this year, obviously, is 12 rounds.
- 15:29You know, I would say not enough racing.
- 15:31But if we go to 2025...
- 15:34You know, they're looking at 14 rounds.
- 15:36What do we think about that?
- 15:37Man, the more rounds you do, the better.
- 15:39Yeah.
- 15:40100%.
- 15:40Like that's one thing when you go talk to sponsors is they're not happy about it.
- 15:43You only race 12 times a year.
- 15:45So it's only 12 times a year you're on TV.
- 15:47And when they sponsor you, they want you to be on TV all the time.
- 15:50So the more rounds you do, the better.
- 15:52regardless of who pays for it.
- 15:53Yeah, agreed.
- 15:54It's something they have to do.
- 15:55I think going back to New Zealand this year was a big, like, sort of saver for us as well.
- 16:00Like, it was cool to go back.
- 16:01And even, like, incorporating that tractor town there was amazing and seeing the fans, seeing what it means to New Zealand as a whole.
- 16:08It's the engagement.
- 16:09And like you said, Davey, the more races you do, the more relevant you're going to be, right?
- 16:14Yep, the more sponsorship dollars you can command.
- 16:16Every weekend.
- 16:17Not every weekend, but the season runs...
- 16:19Generally every weekend from April, China, September.
- 16:24Yeah.
- 16:24If you're in Victoria, which you are.
- 16:27So if we up this calendar, what tracks would you like to add?
- 16:31Oh, dude, like I'd love to go back to Phillip Island, Winton.
- 16:35I think Winton's would be good.
- 16:37Wakefield Park.
- 16:38No, not Wakefield Park.
- 16:39I think QR.
- 16:39QR.
- 16:40QR could fuck her off.
- 16:43That place is a shithole.
- 16:44QR.
- 16:45QR's good.
- 16:46I hate that place so much.
- 16:47Used to be my test track, so...
- 16:49I hate it.
- 16:50Let's bury it.
- 16:52Tony Quinn, are you listening?
- 16:55Philip, I agree.
- 16:57I reckon if we could get there with like the Superbikes or something, like that would be the go.
- 17:02We've done Superbike like four and two there.
- 17:04It's unreal.
- 17:04It works really well.
- 17:05I need to bring back more street tracks, I reckon.
- 17:07100%.
- 17:08We are going to Perth, actually.
- 17:09Yeah, I read that.
- 17:10What do you think about that?
- 17:11That's pretty cool.
- 17:11I'm a bit gutted.
- 17:12Got my first one in Super 2 at the normal Perth track, so...
- 17:16It's all about you, isn't it?
- 17:17It's just all about you, right?
- 17:18Yeah, exactly.
- 17:19Yeah, I'm looking forward to going to Perth because, you know, street races are awesome.
- 17:23Anytime we do a street race.
- 17:24Apparently it's around the stadium as well.
- 17:25It's around like the casino area.
- 17:27Burswood Park.
- 17:28Sorry?
- 17:29Burswood Park?
- 17:29Burswood Park, yeah.
- 17:30So anytime we do a street race, like our cars love it.
- 17:33They look cool.
- 17:34The town gets behind it.
- 17:35It's going to be awesome.
- 17:36I can't wait.
- 17:37So that's 2026?
- 17:38Six, yeah.
- 17:39Because I don't know if you know, but getting to Wannaroo is a bit of a pain in the ass.
- 17:43It is, yeah.
- 17:44And it's like miles out of the city.
- 17:45It's hard for people to, I mean, look, it's a fun track to drive and it's great for spectators.
- 17:49It's just hard to get to.
- 17:50Exactly.
- 17:51It is a bit of a machiné.
- 17:53Yes.
- 17:53Yeah, especially because a lot of people want to go and have a beer and, you know, that sort of stuff, and it's very hard to organise getting there.
- 18:00We usually do a ride day on the Monday, and that's always hectic getting back out there once there's some traffic.
- 18:05Yeah.
- 18:06Not ideal.
- 18:07But round one, imagine round one.
- 18:09How good would that be?
- 18:17Paddock Whispers.
- 18:18What's the latest?
- 18:19What's happening?
- 18:20Because I feel like you'd know.
- 18:22Honestly, I don't know anything.
- 18:23I haven't talked to anyone.
- 18:24Really?
- 18:24I usually get all my information from Michael Caruso, though.
- 18:27Really?
- 18:28I do, yeah.
- 18:28I reckon JC's got the most goss.
- 18:31I don't know if he actually has the goss or he just makes it up.
- 18:33He makes it up.
- 18:34Because some of his stories are a little bit far-fetched.
- 18:37He's a salesman now.
- 18:38Have you noticed?
- 18:39Oh, he actually says that's what I was asking.
- 18:42Do you reckon there's going to be many changes next year?
- 18:45As in?
- 18:45Drivers and stuff like that?
- 18:47Drivers.
- 18:48Oh, there always is.
- 18:49There's always a lot of movement.
- 18:50But possibly a new tyre they're talking about.
- 18:53Yeah, that'd be good.
- 18:54So I don't know if it's the same brand or different brand or different construction or whatnot, but I don't know.
- 19:00I actually don't mind the tyres.
- 19:02Everyone hates them, but I like them.
- 19:05Just like you like the one-hour practice and anything that Ryan doesn't like, you like.
- 19:10What about Brodie?
- 19:10What do you reckon he could end up next year?
- 19:12Obviously, he's definitely going somewhere.
- 19:14So we all sat on the podcast on episode zero and said he's not coming back racing this year.
- 19:19And how wrong were we?
- 19:20We were very wrong.
- 19:21He turned up the very next race.
- 19:23We did also say it would be nice.
- 19:25It would be great to have him back.
- 19:26Yeah, we did say that.
- 19:28And then he's too good.
- 19:29Yeah, yeah.
- 19:30Should have stayed at home.
- 19:31But honestly, I assume a lot of team owners will have a run at him.
- 19:35Yeah.
- 19:37But, yeah, honestly, I've got no idea.
- 19:39Absolutely no idea.
- 19:41Do you know anything?
- 19:42No.
- 19:42Who do you talk to?
- 19:43Just Cam.
- 19:44Just Waters.
- 19:45What's he know?
- 19:46Not much.
- 19:46Not much.
- 19:47He loved his time in NASCAR.
- 19:49Did he?
- 19:49Yeah.
- 19:49Yeah.
- 19:50So, yeah, he drove over there.
- 19:51I don't watch NASCAR except I watch those guys.
- 19:54Yeah.
- 19:55Same as me.
- 19:56He said it was pretty funny, like the driving standards in, like,
- 20:00because they mainly race ovals.
- 20:02The guy that took him out, he, like, spoke to him before the start of the race and he was like, man, I'm no good on road courses, eh?
- 20:08And then, like, an hour later, he just harpoons, like, six cars.
- 20:12Have you seen all the memes about it?
- 20:14Oh, yeah.
- 20:14Send them to Cam.
- 20:15Send them to me?
- 20:16I don't understand it.
- 20:17Oh, okay.
- 20:17I'll send them to you, yeah.
- 20:18Sorry.
- 20:19There's some good supercar memes lately, eh?
- 20:21Yeah.
- 20:24There's an Instagram page we don't need to talk about.
- 20:27Which one's that we're not allowed to talk about?
- 20:31No, no, don't.
- 20:32You're like the kid in school who's like the Instigator.
- 20:36Yeah, you go wrong.
- 20:37Well, there's obviously this man to become memes.
- 20:39He's good.
- 20:40He's good.
- 20:41He's quite funny.
- 20:41You get a lot of that, eh?
- 20:43Yeah, he comes to the track sometimes.
- 20:44Yeah, he's a nice guy.
- 20:46Yeah.
- 20:46So next, oh, look at you.
- 20:48What is this?
- 20:50The way you are, you won't be too far from me later in life.
- 20:53Yeah, you're closer to Dave than you think.
- 20:56I reckon you're like the dark horse.
- 20:57Bruce Stewart always tells me.
- 20:59Yeah.
- 20:59Bruce Stewart who runs WAU, he always says, Ryan Wood reminds me of a little Reynolds.
- 21:05I'm like, poor Ryan.
- 21:06Well, it is Ryan Reynolds.
- 21:08Ryan Reynolds.
- 21:09Ryan Reynolds.
- 21:09Ryan Randall Reynolds.
- 21:10Yeah, it's RRR.
- 21:11This is the new podcast.
- 21:12There's Triple J, Triple M. There is actually RRR.
- 21:15This is being filmed in Triple M's studio.
- 21:17There is a RRR, isn't there?
- 21:18There is a RRR.
- 21:21I don't know.
- 21:22But this is why.
- 21:22Yeah, it is, yeah.
- 21:23It's like rest, relaxation and.
- 21:26Community radio.
- 21:26Is that what you drink?
- 21:27Community radio.
- 21:28Yep.
- 21:29I'm just an old hippie.
- 21:31Townsville, the next round.
- 21:33How are we feeling?
- 21:34That is just one of the good events on the calendar, I reckon.
- 21:38I love going up there.
- 21:39Yeah, it's a really cool place.
- 21:40Very hard track.
- 21:41Hard on tyres.
- 21:42Yep.
- 21:42Tough race, 250Ks.
- 21:43Probably 50Ks too long.
- 21:47We're just talking about having longer races.
- 21:49Yeah, like, no, you have long ones, but don't have, like, super long ones.
- 21:52I agree.
- 21:53There's enough deg in that track that you can get it over and done with within.
- 21:56The last 50Ks doesn't really change much unless there's a safety car and then there's that option of do you pit, do you lose your track position, do you want to come and put tyres on.
- 22:03100%, yeah.
- 22:04Yeah, so.
- 22:05Townsville's cool, eh?
- 22:06Yeah.
- 22:07And we've got another track to Townsville.
- 22:09That's what I'm going to call it.
- 22:10Track to Townsville.
- 22:11Townsville.
- 22:11I went up there a couple of weeks ago for some stuff.
- 22:15Oh, yeah?
- 22:16What stuff?
- 22:16No, just like promotionals.
- 22:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:19And like the track was getting built and I did the route.
- 22:23The trek to downtown route.
- 22:26The route.
- 22:27Route route.
- 22:28And?
- 22:29No, it was cool.
- 22:30It's cool, yeah.
- 22:30It should be good.
- 22:32Still not as good as the New Zealand one.
- 22:33Yeah, New Zealand one was by far the best.
- 22:35I reckon the cops were pretty loose there.
- 22:36Well, because anything in Australia we tend to ruin with rules and regulations because that's just what Australians do.
- 22:41We love to make a rule.
- 22:43So when we did the New Zealand one, it was mad fun.
- 22:45I did 180Ks going to town.
- 22:47Yeah, it was pretty fast.
- 22:48Nick was behind me.
- 22:49He caught me.
- 22:50He did like 195.
- 22:50You were loose.
- 22:51You were so loose.
- 22:52I was hanging it outside.
- 22:53People doing yoga hats in front of the crowd.
- 22:55It was cool as.
- 22:55But then they have, like, we sit down at Darwin, you know.
- 22:59And the coppers, though.
- 22:59And the coppers stands up and go, I'm going to ruin your fun.
- 23:03I'm like, of course.
- 23:04Yeah.
- 23:04Of course you did.
- 23:05I feel like the way back,
- 23:07They were a lot less.
- 23:08More lean.
- 23:09Yeah, they were very loose.
- 23:10They were like, just go three wide.
- 23:12We were three wide on the highway.
- 23:14I'm like, I've got indicators.
- 23:16There are three lanes on the highway.
- 23:18Yeah, it wasn't anything bad.
- 23:21I think Brownie passed a whole heap of cars on the way back.
- 23:24He did, yeah.
- 23:24Yeah.
- 23:25It's because their things keep overheating.
- 23:27Kind of like on the racetrack too.
- 23:30Actually, he didn't pass anyone.
- 23:32Oh, actually, no.
- 23:33They've sort of been dusting everyone, haven't they?
- 23:35Yeah.
- 23:36That was a big win.
- 23:37Well, both of them.
- 23:38All of them.
- 23:39It's like 18 seconds up the road on third.
- 23:41Like, the thing that gets me is how strong they are.
- 23:44All the time.
- 23:45All the time.
- 23:45Yeah, it's like we, at Perth, we were like, all right, we must have a bit of momentum.
- 23:50And, like, we should be solid now.
- 23:51And then we rolled it.
- 23:52We were the same.
- 23:53Yeah.
- 23:53We were the same.
- 23:54But they just seemed to be able to do it.
- 23:56Weekend, week out.
- 23:57Like, a bad weekend for them is like, okay.
- 23:59But they were like gutted at Perth because they – At third or at seventh.
- 24:03Like Fenny's like, we'll bounce back.
- 24:05And he had like a fifth and a seventh.
- 24:06And I've always got that.
- 24:07I would have been like, you know.
- 24:09I know.
- 24:10Oh, sorry.
- 24:11So it's, yeah, it's interesting.
- 24:13But that's the mindset once you have, you know, that confidence, the mindset.
- 24:17I think it breeds in their culture as well.
- 24:19A hundred percent, yeah.
- 24:19It starts from the top down and it's been bred into their organization over –
- 24:24A beatable.
- 24:24Generations.
- 24:25Yeah.
- 24:26Not say generations, but many, many years.
- 24:28So if there's one thing... And they also build these cars.
- 24:31That's true.
- 24:32It's their car we're racing.
- 24:33That is true.
- 24:34So if there's one thing that you could change in supercars, one thing, what would it be?
- 24:40Just one thing?
- 24:41Just, well, give me top three, if you've got three things.
- 24:43I reckon the supercars theme song...
- 24:46Yeah, let's get the piano man to rewrite it.
- 24:49I could.
- 24:49What do you think?
- 24:51No.
- 24:51What are you going to go for?
- 24:54The Seekers or something?
- 24:55I just, like, you need someone, like, real dramatic, I reckon.
- 24:58Like, the F1 one sounds like they're about to go into battle.
- 25:00Yeah.
- 25:01It's tough.
- 25:02Yeah, it's just cool.
- 25:03Yeah, that's what I feel like we need.
- 25:05Just a good theme song, eh?
- 25:07We just need a good theme song.
- 25:08Okay, let's not talk about the intro to the actual racing.
- 25:12What I'm talking about.
- 25:13Oh, sorry.
- 25:14Yeah, the actual racing.
- 25:15Yeah.
- 25:16Yeah, okay.
- 25:16Maybe you haven't been around long enough.
- 25:18Nah.
- 25:18I can't agree.
- 25:19Davey, you've been around long enough.
- 25:20What would I change?
- 25:21Yeah.
- 25:21What would you change?
- 25:22I'd probably change a few things.
- 25:24I'd love to try a summer series.
- 25:26Oh, yeah.
- 25:27So get out of winter sport, get out of AFL, get out of NRL and go over summer.
- 25:35I hate turning up to the track when it's freezing cold and I reckon the punters would too.
- 25:39So you just got really cricket, that's all your rival.
- 25:42Yeah, and people love cricket but they sort of watch it seldomly.
- 25:45They watch it because there's probably nothing else to watch.
- 25:47Do you like cricket?
- 25:48I like cricket, yeah.
- 25:49Do you?
- 25:49No.
- 25:50No, you're a New Zealander, no.
- 25:51Do you like cricket?
- 25:51I do, yeah.
- 25:52Yeah, but you don't sit there and watch the entire game, do you?
- 25:55You sort of...
- 25:56Yeah.
- 25:56Sometimes they do.
- 25:57Watching it now.
- 25:58The real question is, do people watch the whole race?
- 26:02Yeah.
- 26:03I don't know.
- 26:03Obviously, Bathurst, they don't.
- 26:06Yeah, but I reckon...
- 26:09The race is too long.
- 26:10But that's the thing.
- 26:11I reckon people go... Watch the start.
- 26:13Unfortunately, yeah, it's a bit predictable now where it's like we get to a stage where it's like 20, 40 laps and then it's like, all right.
- 26:22I think the cars need to be tougher.
- 26:23Yeah.
- 26:24Yeah, you can say all that, but the fundamental problem with our sport is, which has always been the same, we'd have qualifying.
- 26:31which sets the grid.
- 26:32So the fastest car starts at the front.
- 26:36And then there's no passing.
- 26:36It's like, of course, you've let the bike start.
- 26:38Have you guys ever watched BTCC?
- 26:40No.
- 26:40Oh, yeah.
- 26:41Like, BTCC now, like, they do race three as a reverse top ten.
- 26:46So all the fastest guys have to start tenth.
- 26:49And they never win the reverse grid race because, you know, the guys that are actually tenth.
- 26:54Maybe they could do a reverse 24 race when I qualify down the back.
- 26:57I'm not saying do a reverse top 24 race.
- 27:02You could do something crazy like that.
- 27:04I think doing it maybe somewhere.
- 27:05That's pure entertainment, really.
- 27:08Yeah, but then it also... Like reverse 10, reverse 15, whatever it is like.
- 27:11But what I'm trying to say is the BTCC championship at the last round always comes down to like three or four drivers battling for the championship.
- 27:20Unfortunately, we basically have a champion before the last round now.
- 27:25We could crown him in round one if we wanted to.
- 27:27I think, unfortunately, having stuff that can go wrong and making entertainment helps the championship become, you know, a championship chase because Will Brown starts 10th and then gets in a crash lap one because he's in the melee.
- 27:40Because he has Ryan Wood start in 11th going, oh, he's got heaps to lose.
- 27:43I'm going to launch him.
- 27:45My teammate's in the championship.
- 27:46I'm going to help him.
- 27:47Watch me go around the outside of five at this restart.
- 27:49But you know what I mean?
- 27:50I get it.
- 27:51It's a good point.
- 27:52It would be interesting.
- 27:53I know it's hard from the team's... What about the tyre?
- 27:57I reckon the tyres... Summer season, yes, no.
- 28:01Yeah, I'd give it a go because we sort of get out of... Because that's something we don't do.
- 28:05No, we've always done the same, and I think summer season would work.
- 28:10I agree.
- 28:11And go back to free-to-air.
- 28:12When I first started in the sport, we were with Channel 7 and it always felt heaps bigger.
- 28:16And as soon as we went to... Well, it is.
- 28:17As soon as...
- 28:18I don't know if I'm allowed to say this, but as soon as we went to paid TV, it always felt like it diminished a lot of our audience.
- 28:25Because not everyone has paid TV.
- 28:28So there's only a third of Aussies that have it.
- 28:30So instantly you've...
- 28:33less than half your audience.
- 28:34I agree.
- 28:35That'd be more rounds on free to air.
- 28:37And then there's more rounds, so I'd love to do more rounds.
- 28:40And what about our penalty system?
- 28:41What's wrong with our penalty system?
- 28:43I'm just asking.
- 28:44What do you think?
- 28:45Do you want it to be harsher or lighter?
- 28:49Yeah, that's what I'm asking.
- 28:54Yeah.
- 28:54Do you think too many times you might go for a move and think, oh, shit.
- 28:57I'm not thinking about the penalty at all.
- 29:00Do you think about the penalty?
- 29:01No, I'm just asking the question.
- 29:03I don't think about the penalty or what could happen if I stuff him over, no.
- 29:07You're always thinking of trying to
- 29:10pass the bike.
- 29:11I reckon the penalties on track are usually pretty...
- 29:14They're pretty fair.
- 29:15Yeah, pretty fair.
- 29:16I reckon some of the other stuff, like the pit lane or, you know, if something goes wrong, like even the... Not going to lie.
- 29:22Even the one with Chaz at Perth.
- 29:25Oh, the one in the pit lane.
- 29:26Yeah, like that's not going to really change the race, you know?
- 29:30I think that's just more from the safety.
- 29:32That's why that one's there.
- 29:33Pit lane's a bit different because there's a lot of safety involved.
- 29:35I know, but like... Not happy about it.
- 29:38Nah, like...
- 29:41I just, yeah, find that stuff like that.
- 29:42Didn't he get five seconds?
- 29:44Chaz?
- 29:45Yeah, he got five for that and then.
- 29:47But did you see it?
- 29:48It was just like a slight rub, yeah.
- 29:50Yeah, like obviously if you've come out and half turned old mate in the pit lane and he's hit a parked tyre, then.
- 29:55Which actually has happened with Chaz.
- 29:58With a cast roll car, actually.
- 30:00Rick Kelly?
- 30:01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:02Alex could have done that again.
- 30:03Exactly.
- 30:03Like obviously you.
- 30:05But you're trying to disincentivise everyone by giving them a small penalty saying if you do it worse, there's going to be, there's consequences and you're going to actually hurt someone in pit lane.
- 30:14So I understand it.
- 30:15Yeah, I understand it as well.
- 30:16Bit lane's almost separate to what happens on the track.
- 30:18Yeah, I guess.
- 30:19But, yeah, from my perspective, if you want to open up a little bit.
- 30:24Open speed limit and pit lane.
- 30:26Yeah, yeah.
- 30:26Go back to the 80s.
- 30:27I think someone said that ages ago.
- 30:29Yeah, like 80k, yeah.
- 30:31I'd kill someone for sure.
- 30:33That wouldn't be good.
- 30:34I'd struggle to get it stopped.
- 30:35You know sometimes if the car stalls.
- 30:3640k is almost too far.
- 30:38You know sometimes when it stalls and then you've got to start it back up and then the pit limiter turns off.
- 30:42And you're like, oh, shit.
- 30:46I did that a few times, like, leaving my box.
- 30:48I can imagine you'd do that.
- 30:50What's something else you'd change?
- 30:52What's something you'd change?
- 30:54Yeah, I think the format's probably near to shake up.
- 30:57The tyre, I don't know.
- 30:59It's a tricky one.
- 31:01You need to make more heroes and villains.
- 31:03I agree.
- 31:04Maybe that's where.
- 31:04We're all too nice to each other.
- 31:06We need to actually hate each other.
- 31:08Because when I grew up watching like Scaife hate Ingle.
- 31:11Yeah, Murph hate Ambrose.
- 31:13Yeah, it was awesome.
- 31:14You hate Scott McLaughlin.
- 31:17We knew that.
- 31:18That's my hero, mate.
- 31:19I never hated him.
- 31:20But I think, sorry, just the format thing, what about like a Wednesday night race somewhere?
- 31:27And then like, you know, just a day race.
- 31:30So like you've practiced, you're qualified and then have a Wednesday night race at like Sydney.
- 31:35And in that same week on Friday or Saturday, Sunday, you have the same.
- 31:39So you want us to hang around for a whole week.
- 31:41But you get there.
- 31:42We usually get there on Wednesday, do we not?
- 31:45Yeah, sometimes.
- 31:45Yeah, not everyone, but.
- 31:47Most of us.
- 31:48Yeah, a lot of people worked during the week too.
- 31:51Yeah, but you imagine, no, but you imagine like the kids have finished piano lessons and now they're going to go and watch supercars on a Wednesday night.
- 31:59Oh, and they're back on Saturday, Sunday.
- 32:06So why would you come on Wednesday when you can just go on the weekend when you've got free time?
- 32:11Exactly, your point's just stupid.
- 32:12No, it's not.
- 32:13Trust me.
- 32:14I have relevance.
- 32:15I'm just not executing it right now.
- 32:17Clearly.
- 32:18You'd make an unreal politician, I reckon.
- 32:20I reckon people will agree.
- 32:21Tell us what Chaz is like as a teammate.
- 32:23Yeah, Chaz is good, obviously.
- 32:24Does he help you and, like, says, you know, break here, this is what I'm trying to do?
- 32:29He's pretty blunt, to be honest.
- 32:30Like, he's, like, you know, you guys know him.
- 32:33He's pretty larrikin.
- 32:35He's one of the dudes.
- 32:35Yeah, but he's a serious competitor.
- 32:36But, like, I probably underestimated how...
- 32:39serious he is when it comes to the racing side of it, which I am as well, but it's like, yeah, he's hit.
- 32:46There's only one result he wants to achieve, like the rest of us, is win.
- 32:49And it's even, you know, Perth was a great weekend for us, but because he made a mistake on that Sunday race, I couldn't believe how...
- 32:57How hard he took it.
- 32:58Yeah, yeah.
- 32:58And that's quite... Did he cry?
- 33:00No.
- 33:01No.
- 33:02It's an eye-opener for me as a rookie, though, because it gives me perspective of how much it means to not only us as a driver, but our team and everything like that.
- 33:09So just learning that side of it's been cool.
- 33:11But yeah, it's... Take your job seriously.
- 33:13You're probably good enough.
- 33:14Someone better to learn off, to be honest.
- 33:15Yeah, it's good to learn off someone that's, you know, at the peak of their career, I think.
- 33:20So...
- 33:21As a rookie, it's pretty cool.
- 33:22How do you go on debrief?
- 33:23Do you have to take a lunch, pack lunch?
- 33:25Could you go for that long?
- 33:25Yeah, I'm pretty, you know.
- 33:29Cars got understeer and push or we're slow and then Chaz jumps on but Chaz is on Zoom so he doesn't live in Melbourne.
- 33:39Can't Chaz get to Melbourne?
- 33:40Get to Melbourne, yeah.
- 33:41I'm surprised.
- 33:42If I ran a team, I'd want my drivers to live where my team was based.
- 33:46Yeah.
- 33:46Because it just makes more sense.
- 33:48It does.
- 33:49Spend more time with the boys.
- 33:51They all push harder for you.
- 33:53Yeah.
- 33:53Chez, to be fair, does come down and hang out.
- 33:56Yeah, it's good.
- 33:56And you know what he's like.
- 33:57He's an easy bloke to get along with.
- 33:58Yeah, and I hate Zoom.
- 33:59Zoom sucks.
- 34:00Yeah.
- 34:01I don't know how to use it.
- 34:03It's tough.
- 34:04I struggle with that stuff.
- 34:05Well, thanks for the insight with Chaz.
- 34:08We all know he's a ripper bloke.
- 34:09And, yeah, we all kind of know.
- 34:11And he's a father now, new father.
- 34:12And he is a father.
- 34:13Very true.
- 34:14Very true.
- 34:14Takes that seriously, too.
- 34:16Well done.
- 34:16That kind of takes us to the end of our episode one, official episode.
- 34:21Yeah, official one.
- 34:22So, we'll hope this one actually makes it easier.
- 34:25Hopefully, number one comes out.
- 34:26Episode zero.
- 34:27I don't think it was that loose, this one.
- 34:28I think it was pretty good.
- 34:30It was going to be okay.
- 34:30But, no, thanks, boys, for being on the show.
- 34:33Just want to give a shout-out to Rusty's Garage and Supercars, the Cool Down Lap podcast as well.
- 34:39So, a big thank you to them.
- 34:40And thanks to everyone who listened to this podcast.
- 34:43Where do we send our invoice?
- 34:44I hope we will.
- 34:45weren't too loose.
- 34:46Stay tuned for the next one and we'll see you all in Townsville.
- 34:50Let's go get them.
- 34:51Hopefully you guys have a great weekend but not as good as me.
- 34:54Good luck.
- 34:55Thank you.
- 34:55See you on the trail.
- 34:56Cheers.
- 34:56Take care boys.
- 34:57See you on the road slick.
