Transcript
- 0:00Hello everyone. This is Nick from Suicideal Angels. We're a thrash metal band
- 0:05from Mathens, from Greece. We are about to release our eighth studio album
- 0:14called Profane Prayer, and in a couple of days we are ready to hit
- 0:19the roads, I think from Europe, the first European tour for this album.
- 0:27Afterwards we go to United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal and the whole booking
- 0:35process for the concerts is taking place, so we hope that we can visit
- 0:41other markets as well in the future. We had some plans for twenty twenty
- 0:47to come over to Australia, but unfortunately, due to the COVID situation,
- 0:50we couldn't make it. Thank you very much for having us here on this
- 0:55podcast, on this interview, on this whatever. Just I'm here thrown with
- 1:00your stuff and let's have some fun. Yere for neck. Thanks for joining
- 1:04Spider is a very comprehensive intro. Thank you, no problem. So Suicubtle
- 1:11Angels release your eighth studio album, as you say, Profied Prayer on March
- 1:15the first such is not far away now. Might have with the nerves,
- 1:19what how are the nerves nervous? Oh? A bit yeah, to be
- 1:26honest, because, as I said before, this pandemic COVID, whatever you
- 1:33can call it, stop the whole planet. And actually it hit us quite
- 1:38hard because we had just to release our previous album, Years of Aggression,
- 1:44on August twenty nineteen, and we were about to do a really huge and
- 1:49expensive touring. As I said before, we were even planning to come over
- 1:53to Australia, and we're even planning to go over to the USA and Canada
- 1:59markets that we never visited before. And two and a half years were off
- 2:06the road. Two and a half years were off generally speaking, and then
- 2:09we tried to do some small tours, mostly in Europe and Latin America to
- 2:15promote the Years of Aggression album and gradually and slowly come back to the reality
- 2:22of of the after COVID situation. And it took some time longer than usual
- 2:30to release a new album, but it was because of this situation. And
- 2:36now we're quite quite anxious, nervous, but also excited with this release and
- 2:43we really hope to get back to on the road and to the life that
- 2:46we used to have. All Right, it's like, can you tell us
- 2:51a bit more about profile and prior from a musical point of view and what
- 2:53you're done for with the album. With every album, we tried to do
- 3:00something something that I have said a lot of times in previous interviews, and
- 3:05this is something that this is something that identifies us as a band. It's
- 3:09like with every album, we're trying to evolve, We're trying to move on,
- 3:15we are trying to make a step forward on our music. We try
- 3:22to combine different elements. We try to deliver some different kind of music,
- 3:27kind of music, but of course in the borders of trust metal and of
- 3:30course in the in the identity of suicide all angels. So on this album
- 3:36we have we tried kind of to experiment, if you want to say so,
- 3:39with adding some female vocals on the very last song and some traditional Greek
- 3:45instruments, which actually it was an experiment that we didn't know how it was
- 3:51going to work. And in the end of the day we were in the
- 3:53recording studio and we're like, okay, let's try this out and see how
- 4:00it sounds. We didn't know that we couldn't we couldn't know the results.
- 4:05So we had to try it first, and we listened to it and we
- 4:11said like, wow, that sounds nice. For example, you know,
- 4:15we don't know, we're trying to We don't want to stay inside the box
- 4:20if you want to say so, right, And this is something that so
- 4:25far received really really good reviews and really really good comments from the people and
- 4:31the reporters and everyone not listened that had listened to the album. Cool.
- 4:38Now you've released the singles Virtues of Distruction, Purified by Fire and When the
- 4:43Lions Die? So overall, would those three songs be a good sonic representation
- 4:47of what you expect from the album. If it was in our hands,
- 4:51we would make more singles and more and more and more. We would throw
- 4:55the whole album as singles. But it's not exactly a representation of the whole
- 4:59album because on this album we have like nine songs, which all the nine
- 5:05of them are are How can I say that there are nine songs with nine
- 5:14different personalities. They are different between them. Of course, they are in
- 5:20in the borders of frass metal, they are in the borders of the identity
- 5:25of suicidal angels, but they are totally different between them and your quirless silog.
- 5:31You sort of touched on this a little bit, but the acquire Less
- 5:34signed that the album is a bit different than the ones you've done in the
- 5:38past, So can you elaborate on that a bit more like hous are different?
- 5:45How can I say that, for example, on this album, we
- 5:47have two long songs which are like the one is like around eight minutes,
- 5:53the other is around nine plus minutes, which are like, this is not
- 6:02quite typical and usual for a thrust metal album, And for example, you
- 6:08need you need to pay a lot of attention on the details of these songs,
- 6:12because the line between making a song interesting and making a song boring is
- 6:17very very thin, especially when we're talking about long songs. Of course,
- 6:23we have songs like Ritual Distruction, which is like more typical suicidal, like
- 6:28really fast and really into the face and also purified by fires like that.
- 6:33We have songs like like when the Lions Die, which is more melodic,
- 6:39songs like songs like God of the Insane, which is like with this bass
- 6:44intro that has more and more death metal attitude. Generally speaking, it's like
- 6:49it's a combination of elements that makes this album a bit different compared to the
- 6:54previous ones. Now you started suicideal Angels back in two thousand and one,
- 7:00when you were just sixteen years old, mate, Like back then, were
- 7:05you planning on a career band, I guess, or were you just sort
- 7:10of having fun back then? But then it was just like you know,
- 7:13a school project. We were playing with some friends from school. We're playing
- 7:16covers. We were just pooling around trying you know. I mean I couldn't
- 7:25even play exactly, you know, the guitar. I was just taking lessons
- 7:28and stuff like that. It was more like a school project as before,
- 7:33playing covers, but in after after school and during school, it was something
- 7:42was knocking me from inside to say like okay, try to do something with
- 7:46that, but without knowing where you're going to end up with. So it
- 7:53wasn't it wasn't planned to be like a career, but not something. It
- 7:56was just like there was something inside me like knocking and saying like okay,
- 8:00try to do something something more because I mean I loved music. I loved
- 8:05playing music. So after school I met Orpheus the Drammer around two thousand and
- 8:09three, and the rest is history. We are together twenty one years.
- 8:11Also can say it like even a marriage. I know, my marriage didn't
- 8:16last anywhere near that long, right, So in a way like you've done
- 8:26a large chunk of your growing up and your life experiences in the music industry.
- 8:30So, but what sorts of things have you learned about yourself and your
- 8:33music on that journey. What I learned on myself and on this whole thing
- 8:39and all these years is that you have to be you have to be patient,
- 8:46you have to be dedicated, and you need to follow the passion and
- 8:50the dedication if you want to achieve something. Otherwise it's not it's not an
- 8:56easy path, you know what I'm saying, right, It's not an easy
- 9:01path to follow all these years to be there, to be focused, to
- 9:05be dedicated, to give all your personal time and effort in order to achieve
- 9:09that. So that's what I learned. It's not an easy path to follow,
- 9:16but definitely worth the trouble and it would be made. It would be
- 9:20all right, brother. Well that's a lot of coffee the line next.
- 9:22So The Profane Prayer is out on March the first, and not have the
- 9:26pleasure of having to listen to it before the interview and issues. Well bloody
- 9:28good album made, so well done, congratulations and hope it does well for
- 9:31you. Thank you very much. Hope you'll come over to Australia sooner or
- 9:35later. Tool easy. We'll catch up and drink some beer if you do.
