- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Almost Famous podcast with iHeartRadio.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Hi everybody, welcome back to the Almost Famous OG podcast.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I am Bob Guiney.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Today I'm without my co host Trista Sutter Nay Wren,
- 0:14Speaker 2: but I am telling you we are having a good
- 0:15Speaker 2: time here in Lake Tahoe. We are at the Lake
- 0:17Speaker 2: Tahoe House and we have been having a very very
- 0:21Speaker 2: fun week. I was gonna say a weekend, but it's
- 0:24Speaker 2: a Wednesday, right, Yeah, Today's Wednesday.
- 0:27Speaker 1: So it's been a very fun week a couple of days.
- 0:30Speaker 2: So we are podcasting from the Verbo Summer House in
- 0:32Speaker 2: Lake Tahoe. Procrastinators rejoice. The early bird is not the
- 0:35Speaker 2: only one who gets the worm. Verbal offers last minute
- 0:38Speaker 2: deals for private vacation rentals, and we scored a sweetheart deal.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Here in Lake Tahoe. We're having so much fun, and.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Today I am super fired up because my next guest,
- 0:48Speaker 2: or my guest here on the next hour of the
- 0:51Speaker 2: Almost Famous OGS is my buddy Ryan Sutter. And many
- 0:54Speaker 2: of you may not know, but Ryan does not grant
- 0:56Speaker 2: many of these interviews. It's tough to get them, tough
- 0:59Speaker 2: to nail him down. He's a busy, busy man. But
- 1:02Speaker 2: he was willing to come and hang out with me
- 1:04Speaker 2: and talk with me, which I love. Ryan is my
- 1:06Speaker 2: oldest and dearest friend from this whole Bachelor Shenanigan's franchise
- 1:10Speaker 2: that started so many years ago and has basically ridden
- 1:13Speaker 2: the atrista Ryan Coat Trail Coat Tails all the way
- 1:16Speaker 2: to twenty three years later. Yes, I mean it really
- 1:19Speaker 2: has right, it's pretty spectacular. A lot of people don't
- 1:22Speaker 2: know this, but Ryan and I were in the same
- 1:25Speaker 2: bunk area and our incredible mansion there in Malibu.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Somewhere that I've never been able to find.
- 1:31Speaker 2: When all the guys moved into the mansion and we
- 1:35Speaker 2: had a lot of fun in that house.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Man, that was a very good time.
- 1:37Speaker 3: It was a great time.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, what.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Are you what are some of your first memories of
- 1:41Speaker 2: when I mean, I know you probably recapped that night,
- 1:44Speaker 2: the first night many times, getting out the limo and
- 1:46Speaker 2: everything else, But what are the when we moved into
- 1:48Speaker 2: that mansion that next morning and it was kind of like,
- 1:50Speaker 2: what is going on? And you looked around that room?
- 1:53Speaker 2: What were you thinking?
- 1:55Speaker 3: Oh gosh, I don't like it's all it's all kind
- 1:58Speaker 3: of a blur. I don't know. If it's a blur
- 2:00Speaker 3: or I've just gotten so old that like I've forgotten.
- 2:02Speaker 3: But somewhere in between those two things, I honestly remember
- 2:07Speaker 3: it being a really positive experience too. I feel like
- 2:10Speaker 3: we always had a really good time. And in fact,
- 2:13Speaker 3: I always tell people like we would get the card
- 2:16Speaker 3: to go on a date and there would be some
- 2:18Speaker 3: level of excitement because you're going with Trista and some
- 2:21Speaker 3: level of disappointment because you were leaving all of these
- 2:24Speaker 3: like hanging out with So it was it was, I
- 2:27Speaker 3: think different than it is today where really everyone got along.
- 2:31Speaker 3: I think I told I told you this when we
- 2:33Speaker 3: were hanging out just a few days ago that people
- 2:38Speaker 3: want to know who you got, Like where was the
- 2:40Speaker 3: conflict and where was all this stuff happening? And I'm like,
- 2:43Speaker 3: I literally liked every single person on that show, and
- 2:47Speaker 3: we had a great time, and it was like we
- 2:49Speaker 3: were in this big fraternity house. Yeah, just throwing parties
- 2:53Speaker 3: and you know remember when we took Jack's bed outside
- 2:57Speaker 3: all this stuff was it was just super fun.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:00Speaker 3: And then you know, obviously it got serious as guys
- 3:03Speaker 3: sort of started to go away, right, and then it
- 3:06Speaker 3: became way more focused on on Trista. But the initial
- 3:10Speaker 3: whatever that was weak or two was super fun.
- 3:12Speaker 2: It was Man, I remember it so well too. It's
- 3:14Speaker 2: like that that was and it really set the bar,
- 3:17Speaker 2: you know. I think it was obviously, you know, the
- 3:20Speaker 2: most successful season probably ever of the show. And I
- 3:24Speaker 2: think it's kind of interesting because they, I think wanted
- 3:28Speaker 2: or expected conflict amongst us, and they just didn't get
- 3:31Speaker 2: it no matter how hard they tried. And I was
- 3:33Speaker 2: telling the story the other night about getting pulled out
- 3:35Speaker 2: of the hot tub and being told, you know, hey,
- 3:36Speaker 2: stop trying to coach people on not talking smack when
- 3:39Speaker 2: the cameras. I'm like, look, dude, I'm from Detroit, Like
- 3:42Speaker 2: I don't know, we even know what the hell I'm
- 3:43Speaker 2: doing here. And if I go, if I'm nice this
- 3:46Speaker 2: person's face and that's on camera, then I'm stabbing in
- 3:48Speaker 2: the back. I'm gonna get so much greef from my friends.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I'm not doing it. But everybody was. We were all
- 3:54Speaker 2: like that, and I knew, like I knew if I'm
- 3:57Speaker 2: sitting there on camera and they would say, well so
- 4:00Speaker 2: and so said this about you. And I remember to
- 4:02Speaker 2: this day Jason Carbone going, Ginny, just take the bait
- 4:06Speaker 2: once in a while. I'm like, no, I know he
- 4:07Speaker 2: didn't say that. I know he wouldn't say that we're buddies.
- 4:10Speaker 2: I'm like, you guys are gonna get me say anything.
- 4:12Speaker 2: And it was so funny because we were kind of
- 4:14Speaker 2: in this experimental pod. They never had a bunch of
- 4:17Speaker 2: dudes living in a house together up until that point,
- 4:19Speaker 2: and we were the first run.
- 4:21Speaker 1: And we did like you said it best. It was
- 4:23Speaker 1: a frat hoouse. We'd party.
- 4:24Speaker 2: We'd grant our buddy Jack, he's a firefighter from Cleveland.
- 4:28Speaker 2: We took his he went to sleep early, poor dude,
- 4:30Speaker 2: biggest mistake he ever made in his life. We'd take
- 4:32Speaker 2: his entire bed and put it in the yard. The
- 4:34Speaker 2: sprinklers come on.
- 4:35Speaker 1: He's getting suck.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I mean, you know, just doing dumb, fun stuff that
- 4:39Speaker 2: guys do to bond. We talked about doing our Sentry
- 4:42Speaker 2: Club thing where we did a one hundred shots of
- 4:44Speaker 2: beer and a hundred minutes. And Trista comes home from
- 4:47Speaker 2: her date and she's looking around the house and it's
- 4:49Speaker 2: in shambles. I'm on the roof with an apron, sweeping
- 4:53Speaker 2: cans under the ground. Jamie Blythe is eating dog food
- 4:56Speaker 2: out of the bag.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I passed out on my bed and
- 4:59Speaker 3: she came in and like rubbed my back. Yeah, And
- 5:02Speaker 3: I woke up like embarrassed that I was the one
- 5:05Speaker 3: that had passed out from the hundred shots of beer.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Not a big drinker, one hundred chots of beers, a
- 5:09Speaker 3: lot of it, a lot of beer, and so, oh
- 5:11Speaker 3: my god, I'm so sorry. I'm just really drunk.
- 5:14Speaker 1: And she's she was like, no big deal.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Obviously she forgave me.
- 5:19Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, she clearly forgive you. I remember so
- 5:22Speaker 1: many things in that show.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I mean, it was a really fun experience because, like
- 5:26Speaker 2: I said, I don't think many of us or any
- 5:29Speaker 2: of us knew what we were getting ourselves into. It
- 5:31Speaker 2: wasn't like there had been another season for us to
- 5:33Speaker 2: watch and take cliff notes, you know. And so we
- 5:35Speaker 2: came in and we kind of made it whatever we
- 5:37Speaker 2: wanted to make it. And I was telling this story
- 5:39Speaker 2: earlier about the producers came to me one day at
- 5:42Speaker 2: the first day we're there and they're like, so, uh,
- 5:44Speaker 2: and I don't know how I got selected, Like, what
- 5:46Speaker 2: do you think everyone's gonna want to eat today?
- 5:48Speaker 1: I'm like, well, I think we're gonna want Mexican and uh,
- 5:52Speaker 1: Marguerita machine would be cool.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Maybe some Tito's. At the time, it was a great
- 5:56Speaker 2: goose for me. I'm like, some great goose. Maybe fourteen
- 5:59Speaker 2: a half gallons of vodka, maybe one taco. We'll split it.
- 6:02Speaker 1: We'll be fine. But I remember, it was just such
- 6:04Speaker 1: a different world.
- 6:06Speaker 2: And and you're right about the date cards, because I
- 6:09Speaker 2: do recall. I was never mad when I didn't get
- 6:12Speaker 2: a date card. I was so excited for the guys
- 6:15Speaker 2: that did. And then when I was on a date card,
- 6:18Speaker 2: I was excited to go, but I was also bummed
- 6:21Speaker 2: I wasn't be hanging out with my buddies, you know.
- 6:23Speaker 2: And it was genuinely that you described it best.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I mean, that was a real feeling.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Yeah, no, And I think it Actually it's interesting having
- 6:32Speaker 3: talked to you after all of these years and found
- 6:34Speaker 3: out your path to the show was very similar to mine,
- 6:37Speaker 3: and that neither of us really wanted to go on
- 6:41Speaker 3: the show initially, or didn't believe the show was real,
- 6:44Speaker 3: or thought we would be right for the show. And
- 6:47Speaker 3: I almost wonder if that played in our favor somehow,
- 6:50Speaker 3: like the production team or the casting producers were like, well,
- 6:53Speaker 3: these guys they don't want to be on the show,
- 6:55Speaker 3: we need to get them on them.
- 6:57Speaker 1: They thought it was a play, so they just kept.
- 6:59Speaker 3: They were persistent with us, which worked out for us.
- 7:01Speaker 3: And then I always tell people, had you not ended
- 7:05Speaker 3: up on the show, I don't think I would have
- 7:07Speaker 3: ended up lasting as long as I did.
- 7:10Speaker 2: That.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Man, Well, it's true, like you mentioned that they come
- 7:14Speaker 3: came to you for menu suggestions and things like that,
- 7:17Speaker 3: but I was fortunate enough to get a lot of
- 7:20Speaker 3: group dates with you, and your personality is one hundred
- 7:24Speaker 3: and eighty degrees from mine, and so I could ride
- 7:27Speaker 3: your sort of like you you just sort of carried
- 7:29Speaker 3: the day and I could sort of just ride in
- 7:32Speaker 3: your wake. And then I could have the time that
- 7:34Speaker 3: I had with Trista, where I'm okay in that sort
- 7:37Speaker 3: of situation, but in a group type of like I
- 7:39Speaker 3: don't entertain people, and I don't tell stories and jokes,
- 7:41Speaker 3: and I can't sing and all these things that you
- 7:43Speaker 3: can do. So it was awesome to have you there
- 7:46Speaker 3: to do all of that heavy lifting, which I think
- 7:49Speaker 3: allowed me to just sort of be myself. And then
- 7:52Speaker 3: that is eventually what Trista ended up falling for and
- 7:57Speaker 3: ended up working out for me. I owe a lot
- 8:00Speaker 3: of just getting to that point to you. And it's
- 8:05Speaker 3: it's true. I've told people that from the very beginning.
- 8:07Speaker 3: It just the way it all worked out for me
- 8:09Speaker 3: was really fortunate because I just like things just lined
- 8:13Speaker 3: up well for me. Yeah, I didn't have to do
- 8:15Speaker 3: a lot of that work myself. I could just be
- 8:18Speaker 3: myself on that show. And that's really all I know
- 8:21Speaker 3: how to be.
- 8:21Speaker 2: So and that's what she was looking for for someone
- 8:24Speaker 2: to yeah, be excuse me, to be genuine and be
- 8:27Speaker 2: someone who was really and and the one thing I
- 8:29Speaker 2: remember about you right out of the gates and it
- 8:32Speaker 2: was like, I mean we had a fast friendship obviously,
- 8:35Speaker 2: but I remember I remember being on a group date
- 8:37Speaker 2: and I remember saying to Trista. I mean I think
- 8:42Speaker 2: she remembers this because I remember saying this. I was like, so,
- 8:45Speaker 2: you know, are you getting along great with everybody? Yeah,
- 8:47Speaker 2: I'm gettng with it. I'd be like, you know, Ryan
- 8:50Speaker 2: is like he's writing poetry, he is spending time, and
- 8:54Speaker 2: I was like, I was like your wingman, and I'm
- 8:56Speaker 2: like still technically supposed to be trying to date her,
- 8:59Speaker 2: right yeah, but I but she and I we were
- 9:01Speaker 2: friends right out of the gate, and it was like
- 9:04Speaker 2: and I and I and I knew that and of
- 9:05Speaker 2: course she's beautiful, and of course, you know, but it
- 9:08Speaker 2: was like we had this great friendship and I was
- 9:10Speaker 2: watching your relationship progress in a way that mine wasn't.
- 9:14Speaker 2: And I remember it was more one of those things
- 9:16Speaker 2: where I was like, it's got to be one of
- 9:18Speaker 2: the guys here, and in my opinion, it's got to
- 9:20Speaker 2: be him, you know.
- 9:21Speaker 1: And I felt that way very early on.
- 9:25Speaker 2: And I remember thinking to myself, like it was never
- 9:28Speaker 2: a competitive environment for the guys. We were never like
- 9:31Speaker 2: looking at each other like, oh, that dude sucks, you know.
- 9:33Speaker 2: It was always like I remember, Russ was the only
- 9:35Speaker 2: guy that we all were kind of like, you know,
- 9:37Speaker 2: what's up with Russ? And the reason why was because
- 9:39Speaker 2: he showed up with a gift from Tiffany's on night
- 9:40Speaker 2: one and none of us thought of it.
- 9:43Speaker 1: He was just smarter than us.
- 9:45Speaker 2: And we were we were a little irritated with that dude.
- 9:47Speaker 2: But other than that, you know, And but thank you,
- 9:50Speaker 2: that's a really sweet thing.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Of you to say.
- 9:52Speaker 2: And I and I've always loved our friendship because I
- 9:54Speaker 2: feel like there's a several that have kind of you know,
- 9:57Speaker 2: permeated the show, and and and over the years have
- 10:00Speaker 2: continued to stay intact. And we don't talk much, you know,
- 10:03Speaker 2: and Jamie blythe I don't talk much with Jamie anymore,
- 10:06Speaker 2: but we still when we talk.
- 10:07Speaker 1: We pick right up where we left off, you know.
- 10:09Speaker 2: And it's like the things about that, you know, Jack,
- 10:11Speaker 2: even Jack like Jack's son played football and he was
- 10:15Speaker 2: he was on the recruiting list for Michigan State. And
- 10:17Speaker 2: I was able to kind of look into that a
- 10:18Speaker 2: little bit and see, you know, are they going to
- 10:19Speaker 2: grab him?
- 10:20Speaker 1: You know?
- 10:20Speaker 2: And you know, I've stayed in touch with him.
- 10:23Speaker 1: It's kind of interesting.
- 10:24Speaker 2: I randomly will get a strange message from Charlie, sure,
- 10:30Speaker 2: but I mean not very often, but he'll be like, hey, man,
- 10:32Speaker 2: I'm just thinking about you. I hope you're doing great,
- 10:33Speaker 2: you know. And uh, And so it's always been kind
- 10:36Speaker 2: of interesting. There's there's some no I have never heard
- 10:38Speaker 2: from since the day the show ended, you know, like
- 10:41Speaker 2: like Greg.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Who was one of the hometowns. Have you ever heard
- 10:44Speaker 1: from anything?
- 10:45Speaker 3: No, It's such a unique guy and talented guy too.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Erry talented guy.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Yeah, physician and right, Yeah, that's funny when when you
- 10:52Speaker 3: were talking about you talking to Trista and us sharing
- 10:57Speaker 3: things like I remember when I wrote the poem that
- 11:00Speaker 3: I eventually read to her. I think it did or
- 11:02Speaker 3: not Disney Sea World, and then it turned into a
- 11:05Speaker 3: song at our wedding, which was amazing. I asked you
- 11:09Speaker 3: about it. I was like hey, and I just felt
- 11:12Speaker 3: super comfortable with you. I'm like, hey, I know, I
- 11:14Speaker 3: know we're trying to get the same girl here, but
- 11:17Speaker 3: what do you think of this poem that I wrote,
- 11:18Speaker 3: like in and you were super honest with it. You
- 11:23Speaker 3: read it and gave me your opinion, and I think
- 11:25Speaker 3: it's just it just I think is testament to your
- 11:30Speaker 3: character that you could separate the fact that we were
- 11:33Speaker 3: And I hate the word like competing for a girl.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I also hate the world like word like or the
- 11:38Speaker 3: concept of like I won this, like I somehow won
- 11:40Speaker 3: a wife right out of this thing. I just feel
- 11:43Speaker 3: like it's weird.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Like a process.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Oh, you won the you won the Batcheorette, good job,
- 11:49Speaker 2: was a wife? I knocked down the most up things.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Yeah, it's and it's just I feel lucky and even
- 11:56Speaker 3: when we're talking. This morning, I came in to get
- 12:01Speaker 3: dressed or whatever, and I was like, you know, Bob
- 12:03Speaker 3: and I, despite the fact that our personalities are probably
- 12:06Speaker 3: one hundred and eighty degrees different, are very similar people
- 12:11Speaker 3: like I think we have a lot of similarities. We do,
- 12:14Speaker 3: and I think that's probably why we've been able to
- 12:16Speaker 3: get along so well. And truthfully, when I get invited
- 12:20Speaker 3: to these maybe I shouldn't say this on iHeart, but
- 12:25Speaker 3: I'm always like, it was Bob going to be there,
- 12:27Speaker 3: because if he's going to be there, then I'll go.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Otherwise I don't know most of the other people, and
- 12:34Speaker 3: so I'm more reluctant to go. But I always enjoy
- 12:37Speaker 3: catching up with you, whether it's with a microphone in
- 12:40Speaker 3: my face or at the pool in the morning drinking coffee.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Always this morning I was, yeah, I mean for everyone listening.
- 12:47Speaker 2: So this morning was an interesting morning. My son face
- 12:50Speaker 2: timed me at what would have been four thirty in
- 12:53Speaker 2: the morning here to tell me he was so excited
- 12:55Speaker 2: to go to camp and everything, and my luggage still
- 12:57Speaker 2: hadn't arrived. Damn you a Delta, But Delta, they're my oline.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I love them, but I kind of use that as
- 13:04Speaker 2: my motivation. I was like, Okay, I'm awake, I'm just
- 13:06Speaker 2: gonna go right And so I was calling Delta on
- 13:08Speaker 2: the way there, and I was just bound and determined
- 13:11Speaker 2: to get my bag. And then I got back and
- 13:12Speaker 2: it was still super early, and I did have my suitcase, thankfully,
- 13:15Speaker 2: and you and I just had a chance, just the
- 13:16Speaker 2: two of us to sit out there and talk for
- 13:17Speaker 2: about an hour. And and I loved it too, you know,
- 13:20Speaker 2: like I loved actually realizing how much we have in
- 13:22Speaker 2: common with a lot of that stuff, because a lot
- 13:25Speaker 2: of times we don't even get the opportunity to really
- 13:27Speaker 2: download with each other. We're just like, oh, hey, what's up, buddy,
- 13:29Speaker 2: how you been Okay, great, Well, I'm gonna do this podcast.
- 13:31Speaker 1: I'll see you later.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Then we're at dinner with four hundred people and we're
- 13:34Speaker 2: not talking to anybody.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Anyway, you know.
- 13:35Speaker 2: And so I appreciated that too, And I loved that too.
- 13:49Speaker 2: You Actually, you and my wife Jessica have a lot
- 13:52Speaker 2: of similarities in how you like are with crowds. You know,
- 13:57Speaker 2: like she's great, she loves talking people, she loves but
- 14:00Speaker 2: she loves in a more of a one on one situation.
- 14:02Speaker 2: She gets a little intimidated when there's more people, and
- 14:04Speaker 2: and so that's kind of where I stepped in and
- 14:06Speaker 2: be like, hey, I got this, you know. But but
- 14:09Speaker 2: I do remember when we were talking about your poem,
- 14:11Speaker 2: and I remember thinking to myself that that was really
- 14:15Speaker 2: a huge moment for me, because I remember thinking, he's
- 14:19Speaker 2: sitting here spending time writing poetry and I'm out there
- 14:21Speaker 2: trying to get guys to do twenty shots of beer, Like.
- 14:23Speaker 1: What the hell's the difference here?
- 14:24Speaker 2: Right? But you're and you were at this different place
- 14:28Speaker 2: that I don't know that I was capable of getting
- 14:31Speaker 2: to with anyone at that place, you know what I mean.
- 14:34Speaker 2: It could have been Trista, It could have been my
- 14:36Speaker 2: wife now, it could have been can, It could have anybody.
- 14:38Speaker 2: I just don't think I was prepared emotionally for that journey.
- 14:42Speaker 2: And you were there, and you were there because it
- 14:45Speaker 2: was her, Yeah, because I don't think. I don't think
- 14:47Speaker 2: you would have been there if it wasn't her, But
- 14:48Speaker 2: because it was her, you allowed yourself to go there.
- 14:52Speaker 2: You have that you're such a sincere person and you
- 14:54Speaker 2: just don't care about all the other bs. And it's
- 14:56Speaker 2: all I've always said that about you like the guy
- 14:59Speaker 2: from was that People magazine? Who was that guy that
- 15:01Speaker 2: was here today?
- 15:02Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 15:02Speaker 2: So I was saying to that guy today. He was like,
- 15:05Speaker 2: you know, so what do you think about all of this stuff?
- 15:06Speaker 2: You know, I'm like, that's the house that Tristan Ryan belt.
- 15:09Speaker 2: I'm like, it really is. I mean because the Bachelor franchise,
- 15:12Speaker 2: you know, that was so early in that whole thing.
- 15:14Speaker 2: They had zero success so far, sure had it not
- 15:16Speaker 2: been for the two of you. And then the televised wedding,
- 15:18Speaker 2: which you know a little known fact, and I remember
- 15:21Speaker 2: this Oprah was was was the one who wanted to
- 15:25Speaker 2: do the wedding, and then ABC was like all of
- 15:27Speaker 2: a sudden, like, oh no, We're going to televise a wedding,
- 15:29Speaker 2: you know, And I remember that being a thing. I
- 15:31Speaker 2: was like, oh my god, this is amazing. It like
- 15:33Speaker 2: a bidding word for the wedding. But of course, you
- 15:35Speaker 2: know that was it was. It was just a really
- 15:38Speaker 2: cool moment, and it was like you know that I
- 15:40Speaker 2: remember the wedding was so next level stuff and you
- 15:45Speaker 2: guys handled it, you know.
- 15:46Speaker 3: And yeah that was all Trista. I mean, so much
- 15:50Speaker 3: of this is her. She's been the sort of face
- 15:53Speaker 3: of that bachelorette franchise for a while. I mean, there
- 15:56Speaker 3: have been so many good bachelorettes. Yeah, for her to
- 15:59Speaker 3: sort of be the first one, you know, I got.
- 16:03Speaker 3: I just took this promotional test and we had to
- 16:05Speaker 3: in for the fire service, and we always we've always
- 16:07Speaker 3: focused on leadership, and someone told me that leadership isn't
- 16:11Speaker 3: about getting followers, it's about going first. And I always
- 16:15Speaker 3: really liked that. I was like, oh, you know, that's
- 16:17Speaker 3: kind of what she did in this case, because she
- 16:19Speaker 3: took a ton of criticism and heat and it wasn't
- 16:23Speaker 3: as bad as it is now where it's there. The
- 16:25Speaker 3: social media world was not nearly what it is.
- 16:28Speaker 2: There was chat rooms back then, right, yeah, and she
- 16:30Speaker 2: couldn't stay off of theme, and I was like, just
- 16:33Speaker 2: don't go on them, because you would be want there'll
- 16:35Speaker 2: be one hundred nice things, and that one because because
- 16:38Speaker 2: I made the mistake of going in there a few
- 16:39Speaker 2: times too, and there would be one hundred nice things,
- 16:42Speaker 2: and that one person sitting behind a laptop saying something
- 16:45Speaker 2: mean and that was sticking your head for weeks and
- 16:48Speaker 2: make you second guess everything.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, it's crazy.
- 16:51Speaker 3: It was horrible and so so yeah for her to
- 16:54Speaker 3: do that, to take on this challenge, and then the
- 16:57Speaker 3: wedding was a whole another spectacle that both of us
- 17:02Speaker 3: just sort of so it seemed like it was going
- 17:04Speaker 3: to happen obviously, and so we both just said, all right,
- 17:07Speaker 3: this probably isn't how we dreamt our wedding to be,
- 17:12Speaker 3: but let's make the most of this. And it turned
- 17:14Speaker 3: out awesome, Like we had a great time. We just
- 17:17Speaker 3: sort of let it happen. And there were bumps in
- 17:20Speaker 3: the road obviously, like I think there probably are for
- 17:22Speaker 3: everyone's ding, sure, And so it was it was everything
- 17:25Speaker 3: she could have imagined with all of the people like
- 17:27Speaker 3: Mark's garden play riding like eight bazillion flowers, and all
- 17:34Speaker 3: our friends were there, the guys from the firehouse were there,
- 17:36Speaker 3: and nobody had to drive home and it just was
- 17:38Speaker 3: a super fun weekend turned out too. It was awesome. Yeah,
- 17:43Speaker 3: it was really awesome. So that I mean, again another
- 17:47Speaker 3: like snippet from our conversations off the air, like it
- 17:51Speaker 3: it was, but it was so long ago that I
- 17:53Speaker 3: don't even really relate it to my life anymore, Like
- 17:57Speaker 3: it was just like a totally different time where with
- 18:01Speaker 3: like the helicopters flying over and all of that sort
- 18:04Speaker 3: of press that followed that. That process of getting married
- 18:09Speaker 3: seems like it didn't even ever happen. All I really
- 18:12Speaker 3: remember is just getting married and now having this great
- 18:16Speaker 3: family that we have and all this life that we've
- 18:18Speaker 3: built from that moment. But that's been the blessing of
- 18:22Speaker 3: the Bachelor for me. Trist has been able to stay
- 18:25Speaker 3: relatively connected with it for well, since she was on it, yeah,
- 18:30Speaker 3: or we were on it. I've been sort of intentionally
- 18:33Speaker 3: removed from it, and it's worked out really well for
- 18:35Speaker 3: both of us. Like it's just been the ideal sort
- 18:38Speaker 3: of life for us, and it's it's we're we are
- 18:41Speaker 3: super grateful for it and super fortunate. We feel super
- 18:46Speaker 3: fortunate for all the friendships that we've had and the
- 18:48Speaker 3: experiences that we've gotten to take advantage of because of it.
- 18:52Speaker 3: We got we got to live like the lifestyle of
- 18:55Speaker 3: the rich and famous there for a little while, and
- 18:58Speaker 3: then we got to go back to normal life. And
- 19:01Speaker 3: I think that's the blessing that a lot of people
- 19:05Speaker 3: either don't get to have. They just never get to
- 19:07Speaker 3: go back to normal life, or they go back to
- 19:10Speaker 3: normal life, but they still really wish they were rich
- 19:13Speaker 3: and famous, right, And that's a tough battle to fight.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Also, that's an internal battle for that.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Yeah, and we're just fortunate enough to be sort of
- 19:21Speaker 3: found this kind of really great middle ground and are
- 19:25Speaker 3: existing within that. And it's been, I mean, knock on
- 19:28Speaker 3: what it's been great and hopefully continues to be.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Absolutely no, I think you put it perfectly. I often
- 19:33Speaker 2: say that when people will say, you know, why we're
- 19:35Speaker 2: Tristan and Ryan so successful and these other couples can't
- 19:37Speaker 2: make it. And I do think a lot of it
- 19:40Speaker 2: has to do with making the decision to move and
- 19:44Speaker 2: go back to Colorado.
- 19:46Speaker 1: You never quit your day job, you know.
- 19:48Speaker 2: I know you changed some things a few different times,
- 19:50Speaker 2: but you've always stayed true to who you are. And
- 19:53Speaker 2: Trista embrace that too, you know what I mean. And
- 19:57Speaker 2: so yeah, she still of course, you know, dabbles here
- 19:59Speaker 2: and there and does the things that she can do,
- 20:01Speaker 2: and of course the podcast that we do together and
- 20:03Speaker 2: everything else. But I think for the most part, it
- 20:06Speaker 2: was like I can I can move to la like
- 20:08Speaker 2: everybody else does, you know, and see if I can
- 20:10Speaker 2: become you know, the new Ben Affleck and the new
- 20:13Speaker 2: you know, Jennifer Lopez or I can go home and
- 20:17Speaker 2: I'll take what comes when it comes. And you know,
- 20:20Speaker 2: I actually went through that after the show too, because
- 20:22Speaker 2: there was just all these opportunities and but I had
- 20:25Speaker 2: to make a decision. I was like, I'm never going
- 20:27Speaker 2: to quit my day job because my fear was and
- 20:31Speaker 2: this was this was really something I kept waiting for
- 20:33Speaker 2: the other shoot to drop. I'm like, I'm not gonna
- 20:34Speaker 2: be flavor of the Month forever, and they're going to
- 20:37Speaker 2: find a cheaper, funnier, younger, better looking version to me
- 20:40Speaker 2: in the next Bachelor, and you.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Know, and and they did.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Jesse Palmer came along, you know, and all of a sudden,
- 20:46Speaker 2: I'm like, wait a minute, he's already in a broadcaster,
- 20:49Speaker 2: you know, creat like a guy.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Quarterback, and he actually started no.
- 20:53Speaker 2: It was like they you know, but I just kept thinking,
- 20:56Speaker 2: like so, I'm like, if I don't put all my
- 20:57Speaker 2: eggs in that basket, then I can be happy, you know.
- 21:00Speaker 2: And it took time for me to find the right person.
- 21:03Speaker 2: But once I finally didn't, you know, we've got a
- 21:05Speaker 2: family of our own and everything else, It's like, you
- 21:06Speaker 2: can still You're right, you can still kind of have
- 21:09Speaker 2: both worlds coexisting, but you've got to make the decision
- 21:13Speaker 2: on which side of that fence you want to be on. Yeah,
- 21:15Speaker 2: and I think that the younger people now, with all
- 21:17Speaker 2: the social media opportunities and things like that that didn't
- 21:20Speaker 2: exist when we were on the show, probably find it
- 21:22Speaker 2: harder to decide what's more important. Yeah, you know, because
- 21:27Speaker 2: they wanted the fame part of it. We didn't know
- 21:30Speaker 2: that that was going to be a byproduct of what
- 21:32Speaker 2: we were doing.
- 21:32Speaker 1: We didn't know what we were doing.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:34Speaker 3: I specifically remember when you sat in there with a
- 21:36Speaker 3: psychologist or psychiatrist, I can't remember which one she was.
- 21:39Speaker 3: She said, this is going to affect your life for
- 21:42Speaker 3: probably up to three months, so just be ready for
- 21:45Speaker 3: that impact. And it's been twenty something years and it's
- 21:49Speaker 3: still sort of impacting. And the first several years were
- 21:53Speaker 3: like you like, it was a major impact on your life. Yeah,
- 21:57Speaker 3: to be on Like to be in the grocery store
- 22:00Speaker 3: with the guys getting groceries for the shift and there's
- 22:03Speaker 3: you and your wife on People magazine. Yeah, this is weird.
- 22:06Speaker 1: It is weird.
- 22:07Speaker 2: That was actually a because I mean, I don't think
- 22:09Speaker 2: we don't see the magazines like we used to write.
- 22:11Speaker 2: But I remember that was a big thing for me
- 22:15Speaker 2: because I was I'd be at the grocery store and my.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Mom loved it, right, So my mom would walk up.
- 22:19Speaker 2: My mom would be in like the chicken section and
- 22:21Speaker 2: be like, Bobby, this woman's a huge fan of yours.
- 22:24Speaker 1: I'm like, how does she know?
- 22:25Speaker 2: What do you?
- 22:26Speaker 1: Mom? Are you walking up going?
- 22:27Speaker 2: Are you gonna go chicken breast or thighs? That my
- 22:29Speaker 2: son's Bob Guinea's over there? Like how is how does
- 22:31Speaker 2: this person even know I'm here? I walked Bastard twenty times.
- 22:33Speaker 2: She didn't recognize me. But I remember like seeing especially
- 22:36Speaker 2: when things like when Nostella and I were splitting up,
- 22:38Speaker 2: and I remember seeing the cover of the magazine with
- 22:40Speaker 2: the rip down the middle and it was like, you know,
- 22:42Speaker 2: And I remember calling the executive editor US Weekly and
- 22:45Speaker 2: I was.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Like, why would you do that? Yeah, you're my friend,
- 22:47Speaker 1: Like why would you She's like, well, no, it was
- 22:49Speaker 1: just we just did it to you know sell.
- 22:51Speaker 2: You know, I'm like, that hurts my feelings, like, you know,
- 22:54Speaker 2: I'm not getting paid millions of dollars. I guess in
- 22:57Speaker 2: my mind that would have been okay to take a
- 22:59Speaker 2: pot shot, but why.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Did you do that to me? Like I'm the normal guy,
- 23:02Speaker 1: you know.
- 23:03Speaker 2: So I remember that that did change life for a while,
- 23:06Speaker 2: and that had to be really tough for you because
- 23:07Speaker 2: you went right back to the firehouse.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Yeah, it was fine until the show started airing, and
- 23:12Speaker 3: then I had to take six months off of the
- 23:14Speaker 3: firehouse because people would pull fire alarms and people would kidding,
- 23:19Speaker 3: would take be taking pictures while you're on medical calls,
- 23:22Speaker 3: and it was a huge distraction. Yeah, So the fire
- 23:25Speaker 3: chief suggested that I take six months off, and he
- 23:28Speaker 3: was right, and so that was when we planned our
- 23:29Speaker 3: wedding and it ended up working out great. Yeah, but
- 23:33Speaker 3: but yes, hugely impactful there for a while. And you're
- 23:37Speaker 3: just when you're just constantly taking pictures and constantly sort
- 23:40Speaker 3: of and there was a great there was a good
- 23:42Speaker 3: side of it too, like we got to do a
- 23:44Speaker 3: kind of ton of really cool events and like I said,
- 23:47Speaker 3: we got to live in this really sweet cabin and
- 23:49Speaker 3: on Veil Mountain for a while. So there were there
- 23:51Speaker 3: were definitely some benefits to it, but it was an
- 23:54Speaker 3: adjustment just to try to find some privacy in your life.
- 23:58Speaker 3: And yeah, and you know, always being nice. Like both
- 24:02Speaker 3: Tristan and I realized the only reason why people wanted
- 24:06Speaker 3: to take pictures was they we they enjoyed the experience.
- 24:09Speaker 3: And we heard a ton of really positive like I
- 24:12Speaker 3: watched this with my right after I had my child
- 24:14Speaker 3: in the hospital, or I watched it as my mom
- 24:18Speaker 3: like she was passing away or something like that, all
- 24:20Speaker 3: of these stories that are really touching, and.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Yeah, so you can't ignore them when they're talking to you.
- 24:24Speaker 3: You know, you're listen. The only reason why we're able
- 24:27Speaker 3: to enjoy the things we're doing are because of these
- 24:29Speaker 3: people who all they want is a picture.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Yeah that takes two seconds.
- 24:34Speaker 3: Yeah, like, we'll do that. And so we've always felt
- 24:37Speaker 3: that way, and we've we were blessed with a positive,
- 24:42Speaker 3: a mostly positive impression coming off of that show. So
- 24:46Speaker 3: people have always been super supportive and nice, and that's
- 24:49Speaker 3: been easy to handle.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you're absolutely right, cause I'm sure I used
- 24:54Speaker 2: to hear stories about like guys like you know, I
- 24:57Speaker 2: don't know if they were the villains of the season
- 24:58Speaker 2: or something like that, but they would go into a
- 25:00Speaker 2: and people would mess with them and stuff like that.
- 25:01Speaker 1: That just never happened to me.
- 25:03Speaker 2: You know, I think I got the sun kissed of
- 25:05Speaker 2: being on the season with the two of you and
- 25:06Speaker 2: you two finding love, and then my season people seem
- 25:08Speaker 2: to like And it wasn't successful from a relationship perspective,
- 25:13Speaker 2: but it was successful from the standpoint of I was
- 25:15Speaker 2: nice to everybody, they were.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Nice to me, and there was no scandal. It was like,
- 25:18Speaker 1: you know, that kind of stuff.
- 25:19Speaker 2: So it was easy to come off of a good
- 25:21Speaker 2: at it like that, you know, as opposed to perhaps
- 25:23Speaker 2: one of the others. But well, I love I know
- 25:26Speaker 2: that this isn't something you love to do with these
- 25:28Speaker 2: kind of stuff, but I love that you're here. I
- 25:30Speaker 2: love that you're willing to do this with me. We
- 25:32Speaker 2: are also here, of course, for a pickleball tournament, and
- 25:36Speaker 2: I will tell you I had an early pick. I thought,
- 25:41Speaker 2: you know, well, let's see, I think Trista suggested this.
- 25:45Speaker 2: She's like, yeah, we should do the iHeartRadio Pickleball tournament.
- 25:48Speaker 2: And I'm like, clearly someone has played pickleball, right, because
- 25:51Speaker 2: I wouldn't necessarily suggest something I didn't know how to do.
- 25:53Speaker 2: So I told Kenyon, I'm like, Canyon, I think I
- 25:55Speaker 2: think the Sutters are going to be pretty good. I'm like,
- 25:57Speaker 2: first of all, Ryan's the best athlete I know. Secondly,
- 25:59Speaker 2: Trista suggest us at this, so I have a feeling
- 26:01Speaker 2: they're coming in strong.
- 26:02Speaker 1: We need to practice. We've never done this before.
- 26:05Speaker 2: So two weeks ago at our at our family's lake house,
- 26:07Speaker 2: we got like our friend has like a basketball court.
- 26:10Speaker 1: We put the net over the thing and we're in there.
- 26:13Speaker 2: She everyone's trying to teach us the rules, and I
- 26:15Speaker 2: was just I didn't understand the kitchen because they didn't
- 26:18Speaker 2: have that kind of layout, so I didn't even know
- 26:20Speaker 2: what they were talking about. And then the bouncing of
- 26:23Speaker 2: the ball, letting it bounce twice was the hardest part
- 26:25Speaker 2: for me, like remember to do that?
- 26:27Speaker 1: But I felt like we got we got pretty good.
- 26:28Speaker 2: So then we get out here and uh, you know,
- 26:30Speaker 2: we had some stiff competition. However, I think it's important
- 26:36Speaker 2: that we let people know. Well, first of all, who was.
- 26:40Speaker 3: All right?
- 26:41Speaker 2: You are the champions. Trista and Ryan Sutter won the
- 26:44Speaker 2: Pick a Ball Championship. First and foremost, congratulations, you were
- 26:48Speaker 2: a worthy competitor. I was very appreciative that during our
- 26:52Speaker 2: matches you were coaching us on how to play the game,
- 26:55Speaker 2: which was super nice, like up Bob the next time,
- 26:57Speaker 2: you know, rushing that when you're not serving, And that
- 27:00Speaker 2: was awesome because as we end up having to play
- 27:01Speaker 2: each other twice, yes, yeah, and the first time I
- 27:04Speaker 2: think we almost got shut out. I think it was
- 27:06Speaker 2: eleven to one, and the second time a much better,
- 27:09Speaker 2: much improved game, much closer eleven to three, but still
- 27:13Speaker 2: it was.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Much closer than the score indicase.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Yeah, well you guys when you guys got on a
- 27:17Speaker 1: heater serving and it was just like sheeeze, pets, we can't.
- 27:20Speaker 2: But who would you say from the standpoint of like
- 27:22Speaker 2: watching everybody play, Because I expected I expected Golden Gary
- 27:27Speaker 2: to be pretty good. Yeah, and he brought his own rackets,
- 27:29Speaker 2: his own paddles. I guess you'd call him. I'm like
- 27:31Speaker 2: anybody who's traveling with paddles. That dude's serious, right, He
- 27:34Speaker 2: had special shoes.
- 27:36Speaker 3: Court shoes, yep, tort shoes.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Who were you expecting to be tough competition and who
- 27:42Speaker 2: were you surprised by?
- 27:43Speaker 3: Well, if I'm being honest, I wasn't really totally sure
- 27:45Speaker 3: who all was coming to this.
- 27:46Speaker 4: Thing, so I don't really know who I was expecting
- 27:51Speaker 4: to be good. But when we got there, Gary was
- 27:53Speaker 4: one I knew you would be good. Yeah, I thought
- 27:57Speaker 4: Ben would be pretty good.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Yep. I didn't realize he had had bue need that. Yeah,
- 28:00Speaker 3: I didn't it a little bit. Yeah, Deanna was Dianna
- 28:04Speaker 3: was probably the one that surprised me the most because
- 28:06Speaker 3: she had never played and we played her. I want
- 28:11Speaker 3: to say, we played them first, Ben and her, and
- 28:15Speaker 3: she was hitting the ball over the place. And then
- 28:17Speaker 3: by the end of it, kind of like you and Canyon,
- 28:20Speaker 3: Like the the improvement was was noticeable, right like you guys,
- 28:25Speaker 3: you figured it out really quickly and became pretty proficient,
- 28:30Speaker 3: Like within a few games.
- 28:32Speaker 2: I thought Deanna easily wins the award for me for
- 28:35Speaker 2: funniest funniest player. Oh you know, like every time she'd serve,
- 28:39Speaker 2: she was doing like the Serena really was like that ah.
- 28:41Speaker 2: And then she'd when she hit the ball, it would
- 28:44Speaker 2: either be a grunt or she'd just yell the worst
- 28:47Speaker 2: cuss word you've ever heard in your life.
- 28:48Speaker 1: And I was like, it would.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Make you laugh and you couldn't even return the ball,
- 28:51Speaker 2: and you're like, damn it.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, she was good.
- 28:54Speaker 3: She was enjoying it, and I think you hit the
- 28:56Speaker 3: nail on the head with with Why we won is
- 28:59Speaker 3: because Trista. Trista planned this whole thing out.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:02Speaker 3: Yeah, Trista has been playing pickleball for years in like
- 29:05Speaker 3: leagues and stuff.
- 29:07Speaker 1: She knew all the rules.
- 29:09Speaker 3: She knows all the rules, and she's very competitive. I
- 29:11Speaker 3: don't know if people know this about her, but she
- 29:14Speaker 3: does not like to lose, no mean, and so it is.
- 29:17Speaker 3: I thank god I was on her team because if
- 29:19Speaker 3: I was not, and God forbid, we would have beaten her.
- 29:23Speaker 3: It would have been awful.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Well.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Kenyon also is incredibly competitive, and it was kind of
- 29:39Speaker 2: funny when because we kept coming up against each other
- 29:42Speaker 2: for the finals. The finals match was between the Guineas
- 29:44Speaker 2: and the Sutters, and we get up there.
- 29:46Speaker 1: And Kanyon is like, she the first time we played,
- 29:51Speaker 1: was super competitive and ready to go.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Second time we played, she was like, We're never gonna
- 29:57Speaker 2: beat them. I'm like, hey, I can't have that attitude. Okay,
- 30:00Speaker 2: you need to fire up. And I was like, yeah,
- 30:02Speaker 2: what I love about pickleball? And I do think this
- 30:04Speaker 2: is actually kind of a universal things. I've seen it
- 30:06Speaker 2: in movies seeing everything. It does make couples like argue more.
- 30:11Speaker 3: Oh yes, yeah, yeah for sure.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Because I saw you guys a couple times. She's like
- 30:15Speaker 1: what are you doing? Why are you back there? And
- 30:16Speaker 1: you're like what And you just hit like a winner
- 30:18Speaker 1: and she'll be like, well you could have. You should
- 30:19Speaker 1: have hit it from up here. You're like, I just
- 30:21Speaker 1: hit a winner. Like, no one hit, no one hit
- 30:23Speaker 1: the ball back.
- 30:23Speaker 3: I will let one ball go thinking she was going
- 30:26Speaker 3: to hit it. Apparently that was my responsibility.
- 30:29Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yeah, yeah, I rushed the net too soon.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Glad I know now, or I'd never do that again.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Yeah, she's she's relentless on me when we play together.
- 30:39Speaker 3: Oh god, it's I enjoy seeing that side of her sometimes. Yeah,
- 30:43Speaker 3: it's surprising because she's not normally like that. She's normally
- 30:46Speaker 3: pretty subdued and a sweetheart. But when she gets into
- 30:49Speaker 3: anything competitive.
- 30:50Speaker 2: He's competitive man. Yeah forget, she was a competitive dancer.
- 30:54Speaker 2: She I know, Blakesley does that now your daughter is
- 30:57Speaker 2: in now, It's like you know that stuff that that
- 30:59Speaker 2: is that is a very difficult sport and a very
- 31:04Speaker 2: grueling sport to be conditioned for and everything else. So
- 31:07Speaker 2: you put in all that time and effort, You're not
- 31:08Speaker 2: doing it to come in second.
- 31:10Speaker 1: You know, so I get it.
- 31:11Speaker 2: You know, my sister was a competitive cheerleader growing up
- 31:13Speaker 2: and competitive dance and stuff, and I remember they were
- 31:16Speaker 2: I mean it was they worked hard on that story.
- 31:18Speaker 2: Those routines did not you know, choreograph themselves, you know
- 31:21Speaker 2: what I mean.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Tristan was a little bit of a tomboy growing up.
- 31:25Speaker 3: She played soccer and softball, and she was an athlete,
- 31:28Speaker 3: so she has that in her. Yeah, both of our
- 31:31Speaker 3: kids do. Blakesley has that. I told you Max, Max
- 31:35Speaker 3: has it. It's buried a little deeper in Max. He's
- 31:38Speaker 3: he's more of a stoic type of kid, but also
- 31:43Speaker 3: super hard worker, competitive in that regard. But he doesn't
- 31:45Speaker 3: lose his temper as easy as his mom man, probably
- 31:48Speaker 3: his dad. Yeah, he does a good job.
- 31:50Speaker 1: He's an improved version of Yea.
- 31:52Speaker 3: He's got the management.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Stuff's important, you know, it really is. I mean he's
- 31:57Speaker 2: got that down. So, yeah, I did notice the few
- 31:59Speaker 2: times i'm that Max, he is very quiet, very very humble,
- 32:03Speaker 2: just sits you know, sits back kind of I think
- 32:06Speaker 2: gets that from you, right, like.
- 32:07Speaker 1: From the reality perspective.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and but yeah, I mean I know he's a
- 32:11Speaker 2: really good hockey player, and and you know, I'm sure
- 32:13Speaker 2: probably everything he does he's probably pretty good at because
- 32:15Speaker 2: he's got two very athletic parents, you know, and it
- 32:18Speaker 2: kind of comes by default if nothing else.
- 32:20Speaker 3: I think he's getting his genes from somewhere. I don't
- 32:22Speaker 3: know for sure if it's Trista and I, but maybe
- 32:24Speaker 3: it's Trista's grandfather was World War two vet. Like, I
- 32:29Speaker 3: think some of it's coming from him because he's he's
- 32:32Speaker 3: of that greatest generation, and Max has a lot of
- 32:34Speaker 3: those kind of old soul, old soul qualities. He's matured
- 32:39Speaker 3: a lot over the last few years. He's really grown
- 32:42Speaker 3: up as a person. I'm super proud of him. Again,
- 32:45Speaker 3: knock on wood, he's home home alone. He probably throwing
- 32:48Speaker 3: some sort of giant kger at our house. They're going
- 32:50Speaker 3: to come home to you. And I'm gonna regret having
- 32:52Speaker 3: ever said this, but both of our kids have been
- 32:56Speaker 3: really awesome. It's really strange to get to this point
- 33:00Speaker 3: in your life where you can see your kids like
- 33:03Speaker 3: they're close to moving out of our house and that's
- 33:06Speaker 3: just going to leave us these as these empty nesters,
- 33:09Speaker 3: which one makes you feel so old, it does, And
- 33:11Speaker 3: two I don't know what it's going to feel like.
- 33:13Speaker 3: That Max's room is down in our basement where our
- 33:16Speaker 3: little home gym is, and so I go down there
- 33:20Speaker 3: and it's like smells like Max. It's like feels like Max. Yeah,
- 33:25Speaker 3: And I don't know what that's going to be like
- 33:27Speaker 3: when there's no Max down there anymore. So I am
- 33:30Speaker 3: trying to really soak it up.
- 33:31Speaker 2: You know.
- 33:31Speaker 3: We just took a sweet backpacking trip the other day
- 33:33Speaker 3: for his eighteenth birthday, and those moments have become way
- 33:37Speaker 3: more precious than the closer he gets to leaving. And
- 33:42Speaker 3: so it's this whole parenting journey is crazy, like sort
- 33:45Speaker 3: of the stage you're in is a super fun stage
- 33:47Speaker 3: with your kids that are like really exciting and they're
- 33:49Speaker 3: facetiming you and all that sort of stuff. And I'm
- 33:52Speaker 3: writing these long text messages to my son or something,
- 33:55Speaker 3: and I get I get an expect like a response
- 33:58Speaker 3: back that's just like good, but.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Really, yeah, that's all I get is good.
- 34:04Speaker 2: So one of my best buddy's sons, he has an
- 34:06Speaker 2: eighteen year old and the sixteen year old, both boys,
- 34:08Speaker 2: and he's like and he's he's like that, like he's
- 34:10Speaker 2: he's always been like the best friend dad and he
- 34:13Speaker 2: does all the sports with him and you know, and
- 34:15Speaker 2: he's like, God, you know, I used to think, man,
- 34:17Speaker 2: these kids just never stop talking, right, And he's like.
- 34:19Speaker 1: And now I can't get him to talk to me.
- 34:22Speaker 1: He's like, and it breaks my heart.
- 34:24Speaker 2: He's like, we'll have these conversations going and he'll just
- 34:26Speaker 2: go mm mmm, and he's like, I'll be like, how
- 34:28Speaker 2: was school today?
- 34:29Speaker 1: Good? What'd you do?
- 34:30Speaker 3: Nothing?
- 34:32Speaker 1: Who you talking to nobody?
- 34:33Speaker 2: He's like, come on, man, give me something, you know,
- 34:36Speaker 2: and he's like, it's just I don't know what the
- 34:37Speaker 2: duke because I don't want to be the I don't
- 34:38Speaker 2: want to be too pushy. But at the same time,
- 34:40Speaker 2: I'm trying to carve out moments because I know he's
- 34:42Speaker 2: leaving for school and yeh, he's at that exact same
- 34:44Speaker 2: stage as you and I. And it's interesting because that
- 34:48Speaker 2: makes me almost really want to cry, because right now
- 34:50Speaker 2: Grayson will talk to me and Blake will talk to
- 34:52Speaker 2: me until I can't literally take it anymore. Yeah, and
- 34:55Speaker 2: I don't want to be the dad that's like I
- 34:58Speaker 2: read something once that they said, h never if your
- 35:01Speaker 2: kid ever asks you to like pick him up and
- 35:02Speaker 2: carry him.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Never say no, yeah, because you never know the last
- 35:05Speaker 1: time they're gonna want you to carry them.
- 35:08Speaker 3: Yeah, you know what I mean.
- 35:08Speaker 2: So I'll be on a walk with the boys and
- 35:10Speaker 2: they'll be like, Daddy, carry me, and I'm like, in
- 35:12Speaker 2: my mind I should be saying like, nope, you need
- 35:14Speaker 2: to keep walking, build your and I'm like, okay, I
- 35:16Speaker 2: snatch him off to carry what are you doing. I'm like,
- 35:19Speaker 2: he might not want me to carry him anymore tomorrow.
- 35:20Speaker 1: I'm missing this.
- 35:22Speaker 3: You never know when it's the last time. I used
- 35:24Speaker 3: to do this thing called the leaf with my daughter Blakesley,
- 35:26Speaker 3: where I would hold her up and I would like
- 35:29Speaker 3: I would like rock her back and forth as I
- 35:31Speaker 3: brought her back down into her bed and drop her
- 35:33Speaker 3: and she loved it, like loved it. And I remember
- 35:37Speaker 3: doing it one time and I'm like, oh god, she's
- 35:39Speaker 3: like getting kind of big. I don't know, I don't
- 35:42Speaker 3: know if I can do this much longer anymore. And
- 35:43Speaker 3: I distinctly remember the time she asked me and I'm like,
- 35:46Speaker 3: I'm sorry, you just you've just grown up too much,
- 35:49Speaker 3: Like I can't do it.
- 35:50Speaker 1: And he just never crushes me.
- 35:51Speaker 3: Know when that last one is yeah, you so want
- 35:56Speaker 3: to go back to those days where you could like
- 35:58Speaker 3: swing them in between you and do like things like that,
- 36:01Speaker 3: and and you know, instead Max is talking about like, Dad,
- 36:05Speaker 3: I benched to twenty five today, and I'm like, I'm
- 36:08Speaker 3: damn twenty five and so like, and Blakesley is just
- 36:12Speaker 3: all over the dance floor and look doing these like
- 36:15Speaker 3: these dances that make a dad uncomfortable.
- 36:19Speaker 1: It's like, so you think you can dance style that
- 36:20Speaker 1: she does?
- 36:21Speaker 2: Right? Yes, I've seen some of those routines before, and
- 36:23Speaker 2: then I've seen when Trista posts them, and I'm like,
- 36:25Speaker 2: that's like, it's like a grown.
- 36:27Speaker 3: Up my sixteen year old daughter.
- 36:28Speaker 1: You probably looking around. If anybody's like staring at her,
- 36:30Speaker 1: I'll kill them.
- 36:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:32Speaker 3: The one side of me is like, how is she
- 36:33Speaker 3: doing that? It's it's amazing the way that she can
- 36:36Speaker 3: move and and remember these dances and just like they're
- 36:40Speaker 3: also talented. The other part of me is like, dang it,
- 36:43Speaker 3: she's grown up way too fast and she sixteen looks
- 36:46Speaker 3: twenty two up there, and I just don't like it.
- 36:49Speaker 3: It just she has a boyfriend now and all these
- 36:51Speaker 3: sorts of things.
- 36:53Speaker 1: How does that make you feel?
- 36:54Speaker 3: I actually thought it would be worse. It's not that bad.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Her boyfriend's pretty cool and he makes her happy, and
- 37:01Speaker 3: there's times when he's kind of a dick, and then
- 37:04Speaker 3: we have to sort of be like I have to
- 37:06Speaker 3: be like listen, Blake, he's a sixteen year old boy.
- 37:08Speaker 3: He's going to be kind of like, this is just
- 37:11Speaker 3: how it is. I was the same way. Yeah, it's
- 37:14Speaker 3: going to be. You just have to put up with it. Yeah,
- 37:16Speaker 3: you know, so, I'm but I'm like, but don't put
- 37:19Speaker 3: up with it, right, Yeah, but don't you expect.
- 37:23Speaker 1: But don't let him do that.
- 37:24Speaker 3: You ever get Yeah, that's good, it's crazy. I mean,
- 37:26Speaker 3: it's it's fun.
- 37:27Speaker 1: I challenges I got every time you turn around.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Yep, I remember. I remember, like every single phase of
- 37:33Speaker 3: our kids growing up, was like, oh, I wish they
- 37:35Speaker 3: would never leave this phase. And then they go to
- 37:37Speaker 3: the next phase. I'm like, oh, I wish they would
- 37:39Speaker 3: never release this. So it just keeps getting better. Different,
- 37:43Speaker 3: for sure, but it's it's fun to watch them grow
- 37:46Speaker 3: into their own people and and wonder how they're going
- 37:48Speaker 3: to turn out.
- 37:49Speaker 2: That's such a Yeah, that's a really cool perspective. I
- 37:51Speaker 2: love that there's this thing I saw on Instagram not
- 37:55Speaker 2: too long ago, and it's the dad from Modern Family,
- 37:58Speaker 2: you know, the guy that was on Married with Children
- 38:00Speaker 2: Ed I can't think of his name, and he was
- 38:03Speaker 2: giving a speech to the whole family and he was
- 38:05Speaker 2: talking about, you know, I exactly what you just said.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Like he was talking about, you know, the little baby
- 38:08Speaker 2: in my arms. And then I'm like, oh, I hope
- 38:10Speaker 2: she never goes up. The next thing, you know, she's
- 38:13Speaker 2: become a toddler and she's talking and saying her first words,
- 38:15Speaker 2: and he goes all the way through the whole thing.
- 38:16Speaker 2: He's like, but I never had a chance to miss
- 38:19Speaker 2: the old one because the new one showed up, you know.
- 38:21Speaker 2: And he's like, and I fell in love with her
- 38:23Speaker 2: too as well. You know. It's sort of interesting, you know,
- 38:25Speaker 2: from a parenting perspective, as I'm watching my boys grow
- 38:28Speaker 2: and I'm loving where they're at right now, and I'm
- 38:30Speaker 2: missing where they were. And I think being an older
- 38:33Speaker 2: dad too, like I'm fifty four with a six year
- 38:35Speaker 2: old of four year old, you know, I'm already the
- 38:36Speaker 2: grandpa showing up at t ball and I feel like
- 38:39Speaker 2: it's one of those things where I'm really trying to
- 38:41Speaker 2: savor these moments because I've heard from my friends whose
- 38:44Speaker 2: kids are older that you need to you know.
- 38:46Speaker 1: So that's great advice.
- 38:48Speaker 3: So thank you.
- 38:49Speaker 2: All Right, So we got a few minutes left before
- 38:50Speaker 2: we wrap this up. So I want to talk about
- 38:53Speaker 2: the one thing that we've talked that I've always said
- 38:55Speaker 2: I loved about you was you never quit your day job.
- 38:57Speaker 2: He came on the show that back then, they made
- 38:59Speaker 2: us very one dimensional people, right, even Ryan the firefighter.
- 39:02Speaker 2: You know, I, however, because we were bunkmates, knew more
- 39:05Speaker 2: about you. And I remember saying to the producers, why
- 39:08Speaker 2: do you keep bringing up the fact that I was
- 39:11Speaker 2: a backup quarterback at Michigan State, which essentially means I'm
- 39:13Speaker 2: a party planner. But then you've got a guy who
- 39:16Speaker 2: played in the NFL, and all you keep talking about
- 39:18Speaker 2: is that he was a firefighter, Like this dude was
- 39:20Speaker 2: a beast and it would drive me crazy. And I'm like, you, guys,
- 39:24Speaker 2: I get it. He's humble, he's not talking about but
- 39:26Speaker 2: he's a next level athlete.
- 39:27Speaker 3: Man.
- 39:28Speaker 2: So anyway, I digress. I won't get into that one,
- 39:31Speaker 2: but they want to talk about some of this stuff.
- 39:32Speaker 2: So I was thinking about this the other day. You know,
- 39:35Speaker 2: one of my other buddies a firefighter and he was
- 39:37Speaker 2: a paramedic for a period of time as well, and
- 39:40Speaker 2: my father was a police officer. Always had the best
- 39:43Speaker 2: stories of things that would happen, and they'd be like, oh, yeah,
- 39:45Speaker 2: you know, this happened, this happened, and you should have
- 39:47Speaker 2: seen this, but you know whatever, And it wasn't like
- 39:50Speaker 2: they were talking about people specifically, but they were talking
- 39:53Speaker 2: about moments. Like, for example, my dad's partner for a
- 39:56Speaker 2: long time in the force was a guy who was
- 39:58Speaker 2: a nervous eater. Right, so they walk into a scene
- 40:01Speaker 2: and the fireman I already be on the scene of
- 40:03Speaker 2: the paramatics, and the guy would be like getting the
- 40:05Speaker 2: report from the lady as to what, well my husband
- 40:06Speaker 2: fell down, dah dah, and he would he would look
- 40:08Speaker 2: around and he one time saw a thing of almonds
- 40:11Speaker 2: and he's he grabbed he goes, do you mind if
- 40:13Speaker 2: I and he's like, no, gover ahead, and he's eating
- 40:15Speaker 2: the almonds while the firefighters are taking care of the
- 40:17Speaker 2: man who had fallen or whatever. And she's like, oh,
- 40:19Speaker 2: thank god, I'm so glad you're eating those almonds. And
- 40:21Speaker 2: he's like, yeah, I love almonds and she goes. I mean,
- 40:24Speaker 2: my husband all he does is just suck the chocolate
- 40:26Speaker 2: off him and put him back in that bowl. My
- 40:29Speaker 2: dad to this day, I mean, my dad would just
- 40:31Speaker 2: laugh and laugh telling me that story.
- 40:33Speaker 1: I had heard of one hundred times, but it was
- 40:35Speaker 1: never not funny to me.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, any circumstances like that, when you look
- 40:39Speaker 2: back and you think about all the years you've been
- 40:40Speaker 2: on the forest, and especially with the experiences I'm sure
- 40:42Speaker 2: you've had. You guys are in a mountain community, you know,
- 40:45Speaker 2: and there's a lot that goes on in those in
- 40:47Speaker 2: those communities. I'm sure a lot of tourism, a lot
- 40:49Speaker 2: of things like that where you get called out for
- 40:50Speaker 2: some silly stuff. Any funny stories that you think, like,
- 40:53Speaker 2: when you look back on him, you're like, this is
- 40:55Speaker 2: just like you couldn't write this.
- 40:58Speaker 3: Uh, I mean, it's it's hard to come up with
- 41:02Speaker 3: anything specific. I do remember when they legalized marijuana and Colorado,
- 41:07Speaker 3: you had this influx of forty somethings who hadn't probably smoked,
- 41:12Speaker 3: they probably smoked joints in high school, and they're like,
- 41:14Speaker 3: all right, and so they started taking because instead of smoking,
- 41:17Speaker 3: people were just ingesting these like dummies of us. Yeah,
- 41:20Speaker 3: and it's kind of like doing shots where you're like,
- 41:23Speaker 3: I don't feel like this is doing anything. I'll have
- 41:25Speaker 3: another one. And then all of a sudden and there
- 41:28Speaker 3: was it was still this kind of weird Am I
- 41:31Speaker 3: in trouble? Am I not in trouble? Because this used
- 41:33Speaker 3: to be illegal and I'm not legal, And so we
- 41:35Speaker 3: would show up to these just way overly paranoid forty
- 41:40Speaker 3: somethings that would be like hiding behind things. Yeah, so
- 41:44Speaker 3: I remember that as a phase of the first service.
- 41:46Speaker 3: It was kind of kind of funny. But the beauty
- 41:49Speaker 3: of my job is like, right now, I'm on I'm
- 41:52Speaker 3: on Rescue one in Denver, which is a pretty serious
- 41:55Speaker 3: We go to just about everything and we see a
- 41:58Speaker 3: lot of pretty terrible stuff, but we also see a
- 42:01Speaker 3: lot of good stuff. And then when we're back at
- 42:04Speaker 3: the firehouse, the there's always like things. There's like there'll
- 42:09Speaker 3: be like a personality like yours, or there'll be a
- 42:11Speaker 3: couple of guys that can are just so good at
- 42:15Speaker 3: finding humor in the day, and it's never it's never
- 42:18Speaker 3: about the call, like we're never making fun of like
- 42:20Speaker 3: a person or like you said anything like that, but
- 42:23Speaker 3: a lot of making fun of each other, you know
- 42:25Speaker 3: each other's mistakes, or like we have this one guy
- 42:27Speaker 3: who has big teeth, and we have this one guy
- 42:28Speaker 3: that has a big nose, and like the banter back
- 42:31Speaker 3: and forth much most of it far too inappropriate to
- 42:34Speaker 3: say in a public forum, But it's just that is
- 42:38Speaker 3: the beauty of the job is that you go to
- 42:40Speaker 3: work with a bunch of people that are your friends,
- 42:43Speaker 3: and you you go and you do these you accomplish
- 42:47Speaker 3: these tasks that sometimes turn out really well and sometimes don't,
- 42:50Speaker 3: but you always come back to this group of people
- 42:52Speaker 3: that you really love and care for and that support you.
- 42:56Speaker 3: And I think that's what keeps people coming back. It's
- 42:59Speaker 3: it's like the job is the job, and it's fun
- 43:02Speaker 3: and you feel there's some purpose and some it's a
- 43:05Speaker 3: there's a rewarding aspect to the actual job of a firefighter. Yeah,
- 43:10Speaker 3: but ninety percent of the time we're not doing that.
- 43:13Speaker 3: We're hanging out with each other training and cooking and
- 43:16Speaker 3: all these sorts of like sort of household type things. Yeah,
- 43:20Speaker 3: and that camaraderie and friendship is really special. Is what
- 43:24Speaker 3: makes the job really special and so there probably are
- 43:27Speaker 3: a million different memories like that that hopefully someday I'll
- 43:32Speaker 3: be able to like sit down and really recall, yeah
- 43:35Speaker 3: and remember. But just the overriding impression and the reason
- 43:39Speaker 3: why I've been at this job for like almost thirty
- 43:41Speaker 3: years is because of that component of it.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Sure, which I'm sure is an extension of your sports
- 43:47Speaker 2: years and everything else. Right, it's kind of that same
- 43:49Speaker 2: type of camaraderie and bonding and sure kind of like
- 43:51Speaker 2: what we had in the Batsrette house, you know, honestly
- 43:54Speaker 2: it really is.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, dude, I love you, man.
- 43:56Speaker 2: I always love when we get to get together like this,
- 43:58Speaker 2: and I always love when we get to hang out
- 43:59Speaker 2: a little bit. And I obviously spend a lot more
- 44:02Speaker 2: time talking with your wife than I do with you.
- 44:05Speaker 2: But I've always really cherished these moments, and I treasure
- 44:08Speaker 2: the time we get to spend together. And thanks for
- 44:09Speaker 2: always being such a good friend to me, and for
- 44:11Speaker 2: being supportive of all that, for always being cool with
- 44:14Speaker 2: me walking the red carpet with your wife, and you
- 44:16Speaker 2: and my wife are hanging out at the end with
- 44:17Speaker 2: cocktails waiting for us. So but I love you, buddy,
- 44:21Speaker 2: I appreciate you I appreciate you making the.
- 44:23Speaker 1: Time to come and be a part of the show.
- 44:25Speaker 2: I think a lot of people are really gonna enjoy
- 44:27Speaker 2: getting to hear you talk a little bit about the
- 44:30Speaker 2: things that you have taken away from this experience, because
- 44:32Speaker 2: it is a unique one. Even though there's been thirty
- 44:35Speaker 2: some seasons of it, it's still a pretty unique thing.
- 44:36Speaker 1: For people to get to go through. I'm glad I
- 44:38Speaker 1: got to go go through it with you.
- 44:39Speaker 3: Thank you, Bob Bla. Likewise, I'll love you too.
- 44:41Speaker 1: I love you, buddy.
- 44:41Speaker 3: Thank you.
