Temporary Visitor Center Opens | Birmingham News
Birmingham’s Civil Rights National Monument gets a temporary visitor center this Wednesday at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, open Wed-Fri, 10am-4pm, while the historic A.G. Gaston Motel undergoes major renovations. Built in 1954 as a safe haven for Black travelers and later a command center during the 1963 Birmingham campaign, the motel is being upgraded with new exhibits, improved accessibility, and recreated spaces like a 1963 motel room and “War Room.” Follow updates on the National Park Service’s construction page.
