- 2:09Speaker 1: joined today by Sam Miller and Dan Newman from the
- 2:12Speaker 1: Hawkings Hurricanes at running Club who recently celebrated their tenth birthday.
- 2:16Speaker 1: So good morning to you, Sam, How are you.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Oh, good, good afternoon.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah, time flies, it is ten post one? Good grief. Yeah,
- 2:25Speaker 1: and Dan, how are you today? All right?
- 2:27Speaker 3: A bit tired afterward, but yeah, I'm good.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Carry you're a bit tired. Well you you get up
- 2:31Speaker 1: late or you do night shift?
- 2:33Speaker 3: Two am finished this morning, two am finished this morning
- 2:35Speaker 3: driving trains?
- 2:36Speaker 1: So was it? Oh dear? All right? Well, well don't
- 2:39Speaker 1: nod off. I'll give you a kick if you're not off.
- 2:41Speaker 1: So let's just start with you. Sam, so hawkings Hurricanes,
- 2:45Speaker 1: and I believe you or not, we were checking the
- 2:46Speaker 1: dates and it was actually ten years ago that you
- 2:49Speaker 1: last in this show. That's amazing when the hurricanes were started.
- 2:54Speaker 1: But let's take us back in time, and I mean,
- 2:57Speaker 1: what was you doing? What inspired you to? Was you
- 3:00Speaker 1: just sitting in your arms here and think, I think
- 3:02Speaker 1: I start a running club? How did they all start?
- 3:04Speaker 2: Well, it was actually a little bit like that. I
- 3:07Speaker 2: was running with another club and I had some knee surgery,
- 3:10Speaker 2: so I sat with my leg up watching the Telly
- 3:14Speaker 2: and I just discussed it with my husband and thought
- 3:17Speaker 2: I actually could do better and I could actually do
- 3:20Speaker 2: something that's a bit more fun. So yeah, I started
- 3:22Speaker 2: a running club.
- 3:23Speaker 1: So it started. So, Dan, were you right in at
- 3:26Speaker 1: the start or did you kind of see you out
- 3:28Speaker 1: running and think, oh, i'll ever go.
- 3:30Speaker 3: So the club started February twenty sixteen, and I joined
- 3:33Speaker 3: in September twenty sixteen, so not long after the start
- 3:38Speaker 3: of it. I was after a running club and.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Yeah, so were you out running on your own sort
- 3:43Speaker 1: of thing, doing your own thing? Just sort of now?
- 3:44Speaker 1: And then I'd.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Been out running for a long time and then stuperle
- 3:48Speaker 3: at Christmas party signed up for the Brighton Marathon in
- 3:51Speaker 3: twenty sixteen, realized I wasn't as good as I thought.
- 3:54Speaker 3: I was a little bit more guidance and support.
- 3:57Speaker 1: A marathon always salls you out, doesn't it. People think, yeah,
- 4:00Speaker 1: twenty six miles, I could do that. I've run twenty
- 4:02Speaker 1: I can do twenty six, but that last six miles
- 4:05Speaker 1: is a killer, isn't it?
- 4:06Speaker 3: Six point two six point two?
- 4:08Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 4:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah? Yeah? And Sam, were you you were actively
- 4:11Speaker 1: running at the time then when you started the club?
- 4:14Speaker 2: Yes, So I had literally done my own sort of
- 4:18Speaker 2: couch to five k and then couched to half marathon
- 4:22Speaker 2: and then was just enjoying running with other people in
- 4:25Speaker 2: a group setting. I have done marathons and ultras since
- 4:30Speaker 2: yeah days are over.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Yeah, the old knees get to you. I will say
- 4:34Speaker 1: this actually talking about marathons. I remember being at the
- 4:37Speaker 1: London Marathon at Greenwich one year and someone came around
- 4:41Speaker 1: and give us like this program of about where to
- 4:43Speaker 1: get free beer and all this sort of thing and
- 4:46Speaker 1: where all the routes were. And I opened the page
- 4:49Speaker 1: and there was a picture of you and Karen On.
- 4:51Speaker 1: It wasn't it as a fantastic picture. Yeah.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I was lucky enough to run it twice.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Yeah, so On must have been there like the year
- 4:58Speaker 1: before whatever it.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Was four British Hart foundations. Yeah, yeah, it was fabulous.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Yeah, that was amazing And I mean I have all
- 5:06Speaker 1: the thousands of people opened the picture. Oh dear, there's
- 5:10Speaker 1: two people that I know. That was great. So so
- 5:14Speaker 1: you started the club and how did you recruit members?
- 5:19Speaker 2: It was before the days that social media was really flourishing,
- 5:24Speaker 2: So it was at the time a lot of posters
- 5:26Speaker 2: in the village hall, posters at the community center, a
- 5:29Speaker 2: little bit of support by the now Sports Trust, oh yes,
- 5:34Speaker 2: and then Facebook, Facebook and word of mouth really got
- 5:38Speaker 2: us going.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, and you Dan, how did you find out
- 5:40Speaker 1: about the club, can you remember.
- 5:41Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure it was Facebook, and I'm pretty sure
- 5:43Speaker 3: that I messaged Sam before Wingham. I then met Sam
- 5:48Speaker 3: at the Wingham five k and ten k and then
- 5:50Speaker 3: was there from the Tuesday evening and then the rest
- 5:53Speaker 3: was history, so to speak, ten years later.
- 5:55Speaker 1: And the Wingham was a good race actually well, I
- 5:57Speaker 1: mean back in the day. I used to run it
- 5:59Speaker 1: so and got both sides of the story really running
- 6:02Speaker 1: and comparing it. But it always had a good vibe,
- 6:05Speaker 1: good buzz about it if you like every race, if
- 6:07Speaker 1: you have a nice day. But so I've got the
- 6:12Speaker 1: picture in my mind actually of all these purple shirts
- 6:15Speaker 1: waving at the camera, and that must have been a
- 6:18Speaker 1: lovely Sunday morning there up at Wingham. You.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Wingham was always really good fun because they give you
- 6:23Speaker 2: two options. You can do the distance all the further,
- 6:27Speaker 2: so there's something for everyone.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's right. I do remember. There's a bit
- 6:30Speaker 1: hilly to start with, wasn't it. I think it was
- 6:33Speaker 1: the ten I mean, is there a flat race around you?
- 6:36Speaker 1: It's only like the folks and ten on good Friday.
- 6:38Speaker 1: I things flat if you if you enter a race
- 6:43Speaker 1: and it says undulating. Then forget it. It's really hilly,
- 6:46Speaker 1: isn't it. So Dan, you're running journey if it started
- 6:51Speaker 1: about ten years ago, and tell us a little bit
- 6:53Speaker 1: what you've been up to in those ten years.
- 6:56Speaker 3: So I started off running when I was a lot younger,
- 7:00Speaker 3: but not doing it proper seriously, and then did Brighton
- 7:04Speaker 3: in twenty sixteen join the running club, and now I'm
- 7:08Speaker 3: twelve or thirteen marathons in. I'm not having sure how
- 7:11Speaker 3: many sub freeze my best time, and I've been done
- 7:15Speaker 3: London and Boston and did my Guinness World Record at
- 7:18Speaker 3: London as well. When I saw did I see, I
- 7:20Speaker 3: figure I.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Did see, Yeah, I did, Yeah, I did see.
- 7:22Speaker 3: That was the year I did see Yes.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Normally, to be honest, we stand at the Cutty
- 7:28Speaker 1: Sark and I'll go with folks and running club and
- 7:31Speaker 1: they normally see their folks and runners and then they
- 7:34Speaker 1: move on up the course. But I have always I
- 7:37Speaker 1: always have like charity people to look out for, and
- 7:39Speaker 1: I always kind of make sure that I tell them
- 7:41Speaker 1: to come around on the right hand side, so I
- 7:43Speaker 1: always stayed there. Then I'm in London on my own
- 7:46Speaker 1: for the rest of the day. We go the under
- 7:50Speaker 1: the Thames. There's a pathway tunnel underneath the Thames. Then
- 7:55Speaker 1: you pop up round about the seventeen mile market and
- 7:58Speaker 1: whilst the six mile marker at Greenwich is absolutely buzzing people,
- 8:04Speaker 1: so jeery and happy, then you see him at the
- 8:08Speaker 1: seventeen and it's totally different picture. They just need you
- 8:11Speaker 1: more at the seventeen mile point, just to see a
- 8:14Speaker 1: friendly face and a little bit of encouragement. So what
- 8:18Speaker 1: was your experience of a London Marathon. Well, let's say
- 8:21Speaker 1: the second time. Did you know more about You know what.
- 8:25Speaker 2: To expect, you know what you're in for and you
- 8:28Speaker 2: know to take it steady on the cobbles. But it's
- 8:31Speaker 2: just the vibe at London. Now.
- 8:33Speaker 1: You're going back a bit now because early days the
- 8:36Speaker 1: race was on the cobbles, but they changed the course,
- 8:38Speaker 1: didn't They used to put a mat down on the
- 8:40Speaker 1: cobbles and a lot of the elite runners didn't like
- 8:44Speaker 1: it and a lot of the ordinary runners didn't like
- 8:46Speaker 1: it either.
- 8:47Speaker 2: But our dynamo Dan was on the elite start at
- 8:50Speaker 2: London Boston.
- 8:51Speaker 3: No, at Brighton. Brighton I had an elite start. I
- 8:55Speaker 3: did have way one at London, so I was right
- 8:58Speaker 3: behind the elites in my football beats.
- 9:02Speaker 1: But you run in football bos. I remember now.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Registering that underpass at miles about miles seventeen was it
- 9:10Speaker 3: was really came off and I was very miserable from there.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Yeah, oh, dear football boots, I remember that.
- 9:17Speaker 2: I prefer the London round the real people's houses. Yeah yeah,
- 9:21Speaker 2: they're in their gardens.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah. It's a bit like that at the
- 9:26Speaker 1: seventeen mile. And I think since those days, you know,
- 9:29Speaker 1: we're talking about almost ten years ago, there's been another
- 9:33Speaker 1: influx of London races, like the London Landmarks. And if
- 9:37Speaker 1: you're a tourist and you come to London and you're
- 9:40Speaker 1: a runner, I mean, what a way of seeing London.
- 9:42Speaker 1: You know, it takes you some poorls, Cathedral, Bucket and
- 9:45Speaker 1: past all those places. And I think a lot of
- 9:49Speaker 1: the runners, when they are focusing on their run, they
- 9:52Speaker 1: don't see these places. They just keep their edge down
- 9:54Speaker 1: and keep going. You know, it's kind of two ways
- 9:57Speaker 1: of attacking a London marathon. You've kind of watching your
- 10:00Speaker 1: watch all the time. Well, when I did my London Marathon,
- 10:04Speaker 1: I came back from an injury. I'd broken my leg
- 10:06Speaker 1: and I wasn't fit, but I did a lot of
- 10:08Speaker 1: walking and that was the best day of my life
- 10:11Speaker 1: because I was I was LinkedIn with KMFM and they
- 10:14Speaker 1: didn't know I was doing it. Hat phone calls, I said, yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 1: I'm here, now, I'm there, now stop watching the music.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Had a fantastic day. Whereas when I got back to
- 10:23Speaker 1: the hotel, all my friends, all my colleagues that came up,
- 10:27Speaker 1: they were I knew I should have done two minutes faster.
- 10:31Speaker 1: You know, they're all focused on times. Anyway, let's get
- 10:33Speaker 1: back to the Hurricanes. I know what's going to happen.
- 10:35Speaker 1: We could be here all day. This could be a
- 10:37Speaker 1: two hour show. So the Hurricanes. So those that ten
- 10:40Speaker 1: year period time, have you had peaks and trough with membership,
- 10:43Speaker 1: People get injured, you pack it up. I mean, just
- 10:46Speaker 1: tell us about the ups and downs of the club.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yeah. So at the beginning, I was really sort of
- 10:51Speaker 2: conscious if someone didn't come or wasn't getting them membership.
- 10:55Speaker 2: But I think, you know, everyone comes and goes in
- 10:57Speaker 2: and out of clubs. Goals chain inge, people move away.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I mean, I've had leaders move away, but I've made
- 11:03Speaker 2: them come back. We're pretty consistent with our membership, and
- 11:09Speaker 2: I think we offer something different. It is all ability.
- 11:12Speaker 2: It's very chilled, very relaxed. There is no pressure and
- 11:15Speaker 2: no egos. And literally our youngest runner is eighteen and
- 11:20Speaker 2: our oldest runner is into their seventies. And I won't
- 11:23Speaker 2: tell you who they are.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Well you can tell me their names, but you don't know,
- 11:27Speaker 1: say all day after Okay, well we've been chatting for
- 11:31Speaker 1: a while out and I think we're going to play.
- 11:33Speaker 1: I have a little music break, and there only had
- 11:35Speaker 1: to be one song that we could play for this
- 11:38Speaker 1: for your tenth birthday, this is altered images and happy birthday.
- 12:16Speaker 1: They go, there's altered images there wishing the Hawkins Hurricanes
- 12:19Speaker 1: a happy birthday? And why not? So ten years on? Sam,
- 12:26Speaker 1: when you started this, I know you're all enthusiastic and
- 12:29Speaker 1: you probably couldn't think about the future, but did you
- 12:32Speaker 1: really think as time went by that you'd be there
- 12:34Speaker 1: ten years later?
- 12:36Speaker 2: Absolutely not. I'm so pleased that we still are. I
- 12:41Speaker 2: was more worried when COVID hit.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I was going to ask you about COVID how it
- 12:44Speaker 1: effects you?
- 12:45Speaker 2: Do you because obviously we weren't allowed to run together,
- 12:48Speaker 2: but we set little online challenges all through COVID for
- 12:53Speaker 2: the team, and it just kept everybody going. And then
- 12:56Speaker 2: of course you've got to go back after COVID because
- 12:58Speaker 2: everybody's still in a stick.
- 13:00Speaker 1: And well, you say that it's very true. But did
- 13:04Speaker 1: you lose any members because they got out of their habit?
- 13:06Speaker 1: And I think a lot of clubs struggled a bit
- 13:08Speaker 1: after COVID because people kind of I don't know, dry something.
- 13:13Speaker 3: I think we lost some, but we also gained others
- 13:16Speaker 3: who had lost fitness during COVID or wanted to get out,
- 13:20Speaker 3: So I think it was it was sort of, Yeah,
- 13:23Speaker 3: we lost some gains from it, so it wasn't.
- 13:27Speaker 1: It wasn't disastrous then for the club.
- 13:29Speaker 2: And we did some silly things during COVID as well.
- 13:32Speaker 2: We'd run round hawkinge in fancy dress.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Come and you can say you were dressed as a chicken.
- 13:38Speaker 2: I was dressed as an Easter a chick chick, and
- 13:44Speaker 2: we dropped Easter chocolates off to our members that had
- 13:47Speaker 2: little children. And yeah, you just tried to keep the
- 13:49Speaker 2: engagement there.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I'll come up one year, didn't I only
- 13:52Speaker 1: did a I don't know if it was a handicap
- 13:54Speaker 1: or not.
- 13:55Speaker 3: No, it wasn't a handicap, but it was the ten
- 13:58Speaker 3: K wasn't it from the community Center? Sorry?
- 14:01Speaker 2: I think Kevin's done too. And we were going to
- 14:04Speaker 2: sweet Talking today, weren't we dan to see if we'd
- 14:06Speaker 2: come and do another one this year?
- 14:07Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it gives the date. Yeah, I come up.
- 14:10Speaker 1: The process has gone up though, I don't know if
- 14:11Speaker 1: you can there. Oh six bottles, yeah, two cream eggs.
- 14:17Speaker 1: So right, so you've been going ten years and you've
- 14:20Speaker 1: got a good solid membership by the sound of it.
- 14:23Speaker 1: So just tell us like what days you meet and
- 14:27Speaker 1: we will go over this again. But I mean generally
- 14:30Speaker 1: when when a training times you meet in the day
- 14:32Speaker 1: evenings or.
- 14:33Speaker 2: So we try and accommodate everybody. So we have a
- 14:36Speaker 2: lovely Monday morning nine am session so you've got time
- 14:40Speaker 2: to drop the kids off at school, and then we
- 14:44Speaker 2: train on a Tuesday evening from eighteen thirty. Sometimes it
- 14:50Speaker 2: might be the odd Wednesday depending on my shifts at work,
- 14:53Speaker 2: but we try to stick to that structure and kind
- 14:58Speaker 2: of fits everybody.
- 14:59Speaker 3: In Penalty Box.
- 15:02Speaker 2: And we have just added some personal training hit training
- 15:07Speaker 2: to our sessions that hits on a Monday evening once
- 15:11Speaker 2: a month.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Have you got any members doing marathon training at the moment? Oh,
- 15:15Speaker 1: you're doing?
- 15:16Speaker 3: I do right? In a couple of months, two months,
- 15:21Speaker 3: two months? Still right now he.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Can't say no as that training going.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I will finish it. It won't be a particularly
- 15:31Speaker 3: quick time for me, but I'll get around it.
- 15:33Speaker 1: And do you do you make a weekend of the
- 15:35Speaker 1: family go down or of the families think, oh, no,
- 15:38Speaker 1: he's doing another marathon, let him go.
- 15:41Speaker 3: My boy's actually doing the ten k, so he's coming
- 15:44Speaker 3: down to the ten k. We were going to make
- 15:47Speaker 3: a weekend of it, but I couldn't with the way
- 15:51Speaker 3: my shifts work. I don't know if I'm going to
- 15:52Speaker 3: get the time off until the week before. So the
- 15:56Speaker 3: and the accommodation prices are ridiculous. So we're just going
- 15:58Speaker 3: to drive down on the morning to the parking rides
- 16:01Speaker 3: and then spend the day down in Brighton.
- 16:05Speaker 1: And Sam, you mentioned that you did you've done ultras before.
- 16:10Speaker 1: I know an ultra is technically more than a marathon,
- 16:13Speaker 1: but what ultras have you done?
- 16:16Speaker 2: So? I've done three and they were part of the
- 16:21Speaker 2: Threshold series. I think they've added a fourth one, but
- 16:25Speaker 2: my husband's banned me from doing that one, and they
- 16:29Speaker 2: are lovely, really sort of break the run up, beautiful countryside,
- 16:34Speaker 2: loads of sort of support stations. And I've done Sussex,
- 16:39Speaker 2: the Cotswolds and I can't even remember where the other
- 16:43Speaker 2: one was.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Race of the Kings was it?
- 16:45Speaker 1: And is it? Is it all on one day or
- 16:47Speaker 1: is it like an overnighter?
- 16:49Speaker 2: Well, you can choose. You can either go literally straight
- 16:52Speaker 2: through or you can have a little rest overnight, eat loads,
- 16:57Speaker 2: drink loads, sleep in a tent. Yeah, Harry on the
- 17:00Speaker 2: next day. So there's loads of different options.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Yes, it sounds very similar to them. When my running
- 17:05Speaker 1: days were dwindling, I took on a challenge. I walked
- 17:08Speaker 1: from London to Brighton and sixty two miles and but
- 17:12Speaker 1: I did that again, you had the choices. But I
- 17:15Speaker 1: did that through the day and through the night and
- 17:17Speaker 1: then come out the next morning, you know. And I
- 17:21Speaker 1: mean when I was thinking about it, I thought, am
- 17:22Speaker 1: I going to get on from Brighton? So I taught
- 17:25Speaker 1: my partner Sue and her friend, a couple of friends.
- 17:27Speaker 1: They went down. They stayed at Brighton and about two
- 17:31Speaker 1: o'clock in the morning it was pouring the rain. I
- 17:33Speaker 1: just head talked on looking for these fluorescent signs and
- 17:36Speaker 1: my phone went and I thought it was whose that,
- 17:39Speaker 1: So it was the voice says, oh hello Kevisy just
- 17:44Speaker 1: under the as you just getting on and they were slaughtered.
- 17:48Speaker 1: They were down in Brighton having a great time and
- 17:50Speaker 1: I was there getting soaked. And anyway, I did it,
- 17:54Speaker 1: and well all I remember is getting in the car
- 17:58Speaker 1: and Brighton and waking up in folks them. But I
- 18:02Speaker 1: put on a concert at the Tower Theater and made
- 18:04Speaker 1: a few bob for Cancer Research UK and got a
- 18:06Speaker 1: lot of nice sponsors over. Yeah. I always threatened to
- 18:10Speaker 1: go back and do it, but oh Sue used to
- 18:14Speaker 1: take me right down to win Ch'll see for the
- 18:18Speaker 1: end of the Royal Military Canal and I used to
- 18:21Speaker 1: walk follow the canal walk all the way back and
- 18:24Speaker 1: that was thirty miles, nearly thirty miles. And it's like
- 18:27Speaker 1: marathon training. You thought that's only half way, got another
- 18:31Speaker 1: thirty two miles to do, But on the days different,
- 18:34Speaker 1: You get this mindset and you do it. Anyway, we
- 18:36Speaker 1: are digressing. Who don't hear about all my running around
- 18:39Speaker 1: the countryside. This is about the Hawkins Hurricans that we here.
- 18:42Speaker 1: If you just tuned in and this is Kevin, a
- 18:44Speaker 1: sports Verit daily. We're talking to Sam Miller and Dan
- 18:46Speaker 1: Newman and it's that the tenth birthday of the Hawkins
- 18:50Speaker 1: Hurricans and the last time Sam was in here was
- 18:53Speaker 1: just after the initial start. So it's been a great
- 18:56Speaker 1: journey and it's love to see that you still go in, Sam,
- 18:59Speaker 1: and you've got so much support. So I mean, is
- 19:02Speaker 1: it a nice social group as well? Do you go
- 19:04Speaker 1: out and have a little social evenings or a little
- 19:07Speaker 1: ventures out, little meals here and there.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Yep, absolutely and in fact, most often monthly one of
- 19:13Speaker 2: our sessions will start and finish at the pub. Obviously
- 19:18Speaker 2: you can have water if you choose. We've had little
- 19:21Speaker 2: summer barbecues that was hosted by Claire, one of our
- 19:25Speaker 2: amazing leaders. We obviously have a Christmas party every year
- 19:29Speaker 2: where no trainers are allowed. It's all posh togs and
- 19:33Speaker 2: it's really become more of a family. Everyone sort of
- 19:37Speaker 2: sticks together and looks after each other.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Well, we've been going at nearly half an hour already,
- 19:42Speaker 1: and I do have some sport to do which is
- 19:45Speaker 1: slowly dwindling because I won't have time to get in.
- 19:47Speaker 1: So before we go I mean Dan as being same.
- 19:53Speaker 1: If you've got anything else to say, actually, any points
- 19:55Speaker 1: that you want to get across, you know, just have
- 19:57Speaker 1: a little think. But Dan, I mean running to you
- 20:00Speaker 1: and the Hurricanes. You've stuck with it for ten years.
- 20:03Speaker 1: You obviously I can tell by the times that you
- 20:06Speaker 1: are a very good runner sub three marathon. Were you
- 20:09Speaker 1: ever attempted to move off and improve your times with
- 20:12Speaker 1: another club?
- 20:15Speaker 3: No, for me, I'm very competitive, or at least was
- 20:19Speaker 3: not quite so much anymore. So all my training runs
- 20:23Speaker 3: were solely based on times and targets, and with the
- 20:28Speaker 3: Hurricanes that's not the case. It's so much more relaxed.
- 20:32Speaker 3: That is my friendly running the week, that's my child run,
- 20:35Speaker 3: my go out, and now it's more of a supporting
- 20:38Speaker 3: other runners to try and help them achieve their goals,
- 20:41Speaker 3: because even though we are a relaxed club, there are
- 20:43Speaker 3: runners who do want to achieve times and pbs, and
- 20:48Speaker 3: I'm perfectly placed now trying to help push them further
- 20:52Speaker 3: along on their running journey.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I heard to mention the of the phrase a running leader.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Are you what they call a running leader?
- 20:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm a running I've done my leadership in running fitness,
- 21:01Speaker 3: so I will help Sam with sessions and plans. You
- 21:05Speaker 3: will usually see even myself or Sam on the Monday
- 21:08Speaker 3: morning group.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Right, Okay, So Sam, so any more words from you?
- 21:12Speaker 1: I mean there must be a few thank you you've had.
- 21:14Speaker 1: It's a long journey ten years. You must have probably
- 21:17Speaker 1: a whole list of people you want to think, But
- 21:19Speaker 1: anyway to just sort of wrap it up now, say
- 21:21Speaker 1: if you thank you a little few times, and how
- 21:27Speaker 1: people can get in touch that sort of thing.
- 21:31Speaker 2: With thank you. Really, it is my leadership team. I
- 21:34Speaker 2: always seem to take the credit for what is an
- 21:37Speaker 2: amazing club. But I could not do this on my own.
- 21:41Speaker 2: So I have Dan Dynamo Dan as we like to
- 21:44Speaker 2: call him.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Would you wind him up? And off he goes?
- 21:47Speaker 2: No one can stop him. Ollipops is Claire Olsen. She's
- 21:51Speaker 2: an integral part. She obviously picks up the slack when
- 21:54Speaker 2: I'm at work. Karen Brown, who we've dragged back from
- 21:58Speaker 2: the isle of silly, Sarah Harris, I've made her come back.
- 22:03Speaker 2: And Sarah Funnel as part of our team. She's actually
- 22:06Speaker 2: leads our walking group, so we really.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Do a walking group as well.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Something for everyone. Okay, and Kevin Colby he's a firefighter
- 22:16Speaker 2: and also personal trainer, so he fits in with the
- 22:18Speaker 2: leadership and they are all dedicate their time. They ask
- 22:22Speaker 2: nothing of me. They are absolutely superb Okay.
- 22:26Speaker 1: So if people want to get in touch with them,
- 22:28Speaker 1: they've heard this and now, actually that's news to me.
- 22:30Speaker 1: I didn't realize you had a walking group, because there
- 22:32Speaker 1: are some people out there that, like you say, they're
- 22:35Speaker 1: running days are over, or they want to start fitness,
- 22:37Speaker 1: do like walking, So just tell us about that and
- 22:40Speaker 1: how they can get in touch with you.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Yeah, So the easiest way to get in touch is
- 22:44Speaker 2: social media. We're on Instagram and Facebook, Hawkins Hurricanes Running Club,
- 22:49Speaker 2: nice and easy. We're based at the Community Center, so
- 22:52Speaker 2: you can pop in there and they'll always direct you
- 22:55Speaker 2: and our web page you can find too.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Oh brilliant. Okay, So it's been a brilliant morning. I
- 23:01Speaker 1: know when I have people come through that door and
- 23:04Speaker 1: they sit down, no matter what sport it is, they
- 23:07Speaker 1: are so passionate about it. And I can tell you
- 23:09Speaker 1: know the fact that you've been both loyal to the Hurricanes,
- 23:12Speaker 1: that you've got this passion about it and that you
- 23:15Speaker 1: want to share it. So there's anyone out there listening
- 23:17Speaker 1: and you want a nice, chill, laid back introduction to
- 23:21Speaker 1: sport and running or walking, then please please please get
- 23:25Speaker 1: in touch with Sam or Dan through their social media pages. Sam,
- 23:29Speaker 1: thank you so much for coming in. It's been a
- 23:30Speaker 1: pleasure after all the ten years, and they've got you
- 23:33Speaker 1: back in twenty years and see if you're still going afraid. Yeah,
- 23:38Speaker 1: and Dan, good luck to you at Brighton. It's nice
- 23:43Speaker 1: to know that you're not so time obsessive now and
- 23:46Speaker 1: you're giving something back to the other Hurricanes. So thank
- 23:48Speaker 1: you for coming in.
- 23:49Speaker 3: Dan, cheers, Kate, thank you very much.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Okay, so it's time for a bit of music now.
- 23:52Speaker 1: And I discovered that on social media today that this
- 23:56Speaker 1: gentleman is actually eighty six today. And you must remember
- 24:00Speaker 1: this if you're my age. This is Smokey Roberson and
- 24:03Speaker 1: tears of a clown Smoking Robinson. There are tears of
- 24:24Speaker 1: a clown. Can you believe he's eighty six today? And
- 24:28Speaker 1: some of you oldiers remember that and remember dancing to
- 24:31Speaker 1: that one in the old Locano type ballrooms back in
- 24:35Speaker 1: the day. Okay, so we've got I don't know about
- 24:38Speaker 1: twenty minutes left. Now, let's see if we've got sport
- 24:40Speaker 1: we can squeeze in, so we start with football folks
- 24:44Speaker 1: in the Victor traveled away and beat dullige Hamlet to
- 24:46Speaker 1: Neil last week. More from that match when we catch
- 24:49Speaker 1: up with a d on the Saturday Sports show. This
- 24:52Speaker 1: week it's a home fixture against the Internet team. It's
- 24:55Speaker 1: a strange one. It's there are internet team called hashtag United,
- 24:58Speaker 1: but I mean the playf and it's still at a
- 25:01Speaker 1: very good level. This is a team with thousands of
- 25:04Speaker 1: Internet supporters, but not many that actually go to the game.
- 25:07Speaker 1: They haven't got their own ground, They've got their ground
- 25:10Speaker 1: share with a team called Averly down in Essex. Hive Town.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Eight new signings didn't make much difference last week as
- 25:19Speaker 1: I Ive went down three nil away against Eryth and Belvedere.
- 25:23Speaker 1: So is it too late for Hive. You can't expect
- 25:26Speaker 1: eight new players to gel in the first week, can you?
- 25:29Speaker 1: Even if they Even if they do, is the writing
- 25:31Speaker 1: on the wall for Hive. The Saturday is a home
- 25:34Speaker 1: fixture against fifteenth place to Corinthian. I have are currently nineteenth,
- 25:39Speaker 1: that's bottom place, the level on points with Stansfeld who
- 25:43Speaker 1: have got two games in hand. So if they get
- 25:45Speaker 1: a brand New eleven a side team. It's going to
- 25:48Speaker 1: be a tough call. In the NLG Kent County Premier League,
- 25:52Speaker 1: a fourth place Hawk indusdry one all with top club
- 25:55Speaker 1: Minster in a league game. New Romney lost three nil
- 25:58Speaker 1: away to Sporting Club Thamesmen in the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield.
- 26:03Speaker 1: The Saturday Hawkings are away to a Guru Nanak. That's
- 26:06Speaker 1: they've got to travel to Gravesend. That's for a league fixture.
- 26:09Speaker 1: And New Romney are once again in cup action, this
- 26:12Speaker 1: time a way to Upchurch. You our tenth in Division
- 26:15Speaker 1: one Central and East in the Interregional Challenge Cup, so
- 26:20Speaker 1: that one really is a premier team playing against the
- 26:22Speaker 1: team from a lower division. So it could be a
- 26:25Speaker 1: little bit of a banana skin, right. We do a
- 26:28Speaker 1: bit of rugby now, of rugby news, local stuff of
- 26:30Speaker 1: folks in rugby Club's first fifteen narrowly beat sid Cup
- 26:34Speaker 1: by twenty nine points to twenty six Larst Saturday, but
- 26:37Speaker 1: the Seconds conceded the game against Whitstable, so the league
- 26:40Speaker 1: considered that as a forty points to neil defeat. I
- 26:43Speaker 1: mean it may have meant that the Seconds couldn't field
- 26:45Speaker 1: a team. There might have been the illness in the side,
- 26:48Speaker 1: but basically if you concede, that's it forty points to nil.
- 26:52Speaker 1: So anyway, no games for the men's sides this Saturday.
- 26:54Speaker 1: But the ladies are at home on Sunday too than
- 26:57Speaker 1: it wonderers and so I couldn't find a time for
- 27:01Speaker 1: that kickoff. So if you want to find out, just
- 27:03Speaker 1: dropped them a line on social media. But like every
- 27:06Speaker 1: game that's played on grass, at the moment, double check
- 27:09Speaker 1: before you travel see if it's on.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Well.
- 27:13Speaker 1: In the Six Nations, Ireland beat Italy by twenty points
- 27:16Speaker 1: to thirteen, Scotland beat England thirty one to twenty and
- 27:20Speaker 1: France beat Wales fifty four to twelve. So the tables
- 27:24Speaker 1: now taking a bit of shape. The last year's winners France,
- 27:27Speaker 1: they're unbeaten at the top, followed by Scotland, England, Italy,
- 27:31Speaker 1: Ireland and sadly Wales once again. Will it be another
- 27:34Speaker 1: wooden spoon. So in the folks and Rugby clubhouse there
- 27:40Speaker 1: was an offer. The offer went half priced beer up
- 27:43Speaker 1: until the first try is scored in the Scotland England game,
- 27:47Speaker 1: and luckily for the bar takings, it was in the
- 27:51Speaker 1: tenth minute when Scotland scored, so they didn't have to
- 27:54Speaker 1: shell out too much money, but I bet there was
- 27:57Speaker 1: a few buying a double and triple beers that tenth minute.
- 28:02Speaker 1: This weekend in the sixth Nations there are another three games.
- 28:05Speaker 1: On Saturday, England play Island at Twickenham, that's say ten
- 28:09Speaker 1: past two kickoff. Later on the same day, Wales are
- 28:12Speaker 1: at home to in Cardiff against Scotland at four forty,
- 28:16Speaker 1: and then on Sunday at ten past three, it's France
- 28:20Speaker 1: versus Italy at Lelee. Now Leo isn't too far away.
- 28:23Speaker 1: I wonder if there's any Neutrals that might just pop
- 28:26Speaker 1: over to Lyle. It's not far away from northern France.
- 28:29Speaker 1: And it's funny that they are not having it at
- 28:31Speaker 1: the State of France. So it's nice to see that
- 28:34Speaker 1: they're putting these games out in the suburbs, so to speak. Okay, well,
- 28:40Speaker 1: there's another musical birthday today and this is a gentleman
- 28:43Speaker 1: got one name. Not many singers have got just one name,
- 28:46Speaker 1: but this the sings this song called Crazy and this
- 28:49Speaker 1: is Seal from nineteen ninety Seal There and Crazy, but
- 29:33Speaker 1: that is two awesome. A male vocalists we've had their
- 29:36Speaker 1: Smokey Robinson and Seal both have their birthdays today, right.
- 29:40Speaker 1: I want to I do want to get this one
- 29:41Speaker 1: in because last Sunday I was on the mic at
- 29:44Speaker 1: the Deal Half Marathon. While I was setting up, it
- 29:47Speaker 1: was cold, but it was dry. The runners set off
- 29:50Speaker 1: and the conditions just got worse and worse. The wind
- 29:53Speaker 1: started to get up and it rained even harder, and
- 29:55Speaker 1: then the temperature dropped. It just wasn't a day for running. Now.
- 29:59Speaker 1: The stats show that two hundred and sixty three runners started,
- 30:03Speaker 1: and I find this quite a good figure. Actually eight
- 30:07Speaker 1: dropped out and I think our two hundred and six
- 30:09Speaker 1: sixty three that isn't many, really, I mean it was extreme.
- 30:15Speaker 1: But the interesting one was that forty runners forty four.
- 30:18Speaker 1: In fact, forty four runners perhaps wisely didn't make the
- 30:21Speaker 1: start line. Perhaps they saw the weather forecast and thought, no,
- 30:25Speaker 1: it's not for me. Now. Some parts of the course
- 30:28Speaker 1: is very open, so with the wind chill factor, runners
- 30:31Speaker 1: really suffered many and I saw this when they finished,
- 30:34Speaker 1: many shaking uncontrol controllably at the finish line. First man
- 30:38Speaker 1: home was Deal tri club member Toby Smith, and he
- 30:41Speaker 1: was forty five seconds ahead of second place Dover Road
- 30:45Speaker 1: runner Alan woody Wood. First Lady Home was Florence Papignon
- 30:50Speaker 1: and second lady was Folkeston as a Nicki Goodwin. A
- 30:54Speaker 1: total of eight folks and running and athletic club members
- 30:57Speaker 1: took part and just one South Kent, Harriet Margaret Connolly,
- 31:00Speaker 1: who was second in her age category. I mean, this
- 31:04Speaker 1: is a special, special outstanding mention and it must go
- 31:07Speaker 1: to race director Jill Cliff and her team of brave
- 31:10Speaker 1: marshals who, despite no doubt being frozen themselves, encouraged runners
- 31:14Speaker 1: all the way and there was a story that run
- 31:17Speaker 1: one marshal actually gave Margaret Connolly her own gloves. She
- 31:20Speaker 1: gave up her gloves because Margaret was absolutely frozen. Now,
- 31:24Speaker 1: this race will go down as one of the coldest, windiest,
- 31:29Speaker 1: wettest ones that many runners have ever experienced, and they
- 31:33Speaker 1: don't want to go through that again. But we mustn't
- 31:36Speaker 1: forget the twenty four junior runners who took part in
- 31:39Speaker 1: their own race. Lucky for them, the weather was deteriorate
- 31:43Speaker 1: later on in the day, so whilst it was cold,
- 31:45Speaker 1: it wasn't extreme for the juniors and there was a
- 31:48Speaker 1: lot I did notice there was quite a few in
- 31:51Speaker 1: the many under eight category, so I mean for them
- 31:54Speaker 1: they must have been frozen. But once they got going
- 31:57Speaker 1: and it was a good, cheery day and some of
- 32:00Speaker 1: the parents run with the kids, and we tried to
- 32:03Speaker 1: make it as much fun for him as possible as
- 32:06Speaker 1: for me, while I was frozen and soaked and on
- 32:08Speaker 1: arriving home immediately stripped off and spent twenty minutes or
- 32:12Speaker 1: more in a hot shower trying to warm up. No
- 32:15Speaker 1: doubt many other races on the day had similar conditions,
- 32:17Speaker 1: but the Deal half was lucky enough to be captured
- 32:20Speaker 1: on the Meridian News that evening, showing that the reports
- 32:23Speaker 1: and feelings of the runners were not exaggerated. And finally
- 32:27Speaker 1: I must add well done to two members of the
- 32:29Speaker 1: Deal and Warmer Lifeboat team who run the race in
- 32:32Speaker 1: full kit, helmet and Wellington's. I mean the kit must
- 32:36Speaker 1: have kept them a bit drier than the others, but
- 32:38Speaker 1: they also run carrying equipment and as I said, sporting
- 32:41Speaker 1: their safety helmets. These brave lads, Dan Sinclair and Nathan
- 32:46Speaker 1: Sidens were raising funds for the Iron Ellie the Deal
- 32:50Speaker 1: and Warmer Lifeboat, so a big, big well done. So
- 32:52Speaker 1: they got a great reception at the end. Now I
- 32:55Speaker 1: want to play this one. I do want to get
- 32:57Speaker 1: this one in as well. I've said to men, any
- 33:00Speaker 1: of the audience listening in music can take you back somewhere.
- 33:04Speaker 1: I can take you back to your childhood. So your
- 33:06Speaker 1: first boyfriend, girlfriend, your first kiss, your first holiday. But
- 33:11Speaker 1: it's also a sad side to it. It can take
- 33:13Speaker 1: you back to funerals at work as well. Now, recently
- 33:17Speaker 1: I went to a funeral from a work colleague of mine,
- 33:20Speaker 1: Big Ron, and he was big. He was a massive lad.
- 33:24Speaker 1: He was also a biker. He formed a bike in
- 33:27Speaker 1: brotherhood all arms veterans, and they turned up at the funeral.
- 33:31Speaker 1: The funeral hearse was led by a piper and then
- 33:35Speaker 1: followed about twenty odd bikers from the brotherhood and they
- 33:40Speaker 1: played this song and this is one that every time
- 33:43Speaker 1: I hear it now, I will take you back to
- 33:45Speaker 1: this day when we said goodbye to Big Ron and
- 33:49Speaker 1: this is the Hollies and he ain't heavy, he's my brother.
- 34:12Speaker 1: So they go that was for Big We're on there
- 34:15Speaker 1: and his brotherhood and said he played that at his funeral,
- 34:20Speaker 1: and that is every time I'm going to hear that
- 34:22Speaker 1: song now, I'm sure that I'll go straight to you
- 34:25Speaker 1: to that day. Okay, So with a little bit more
- 34:27Speaker 1: sport to try and squeeze in and we've got now, yeah, basketball,
- 34:31Speaker 1: we want to get this in. At the under fourteens
- 34:34Speaker 1: Folks and Saints, it was the top of the table
- 34:36Speaker 1: clash between the Saints and Bromley Fury and it went
- 34:39Speaker 1: right down to the wire. Score at the end of
- 34:41Speaker 1: the game was seventy six points each. Then it went
- 34:44Speaker 1: to overtime where Saints founder hoop first and final score
- 34:48Speaker 1: was seventy eight seventy six to the Saints. So the
- 34:51Speaker 1: league table looks like this. Fury and Saints have both
- 34:54Speaker 1: played seventeen games with forty nine points, but Fury are top,
- 34:59Speaker 1: having a better goalscoring difference. But there's still are three
- 35:03Speaker 1: games to go, so it really is on a knife
- 35:06Speaker 1: edge now and it's looking to be a really exciting
- 35:09Speaker 1: climax to the season. Now, park run venues and last
- 35:13Speaker 1: Saturday saw some of the local runners finding even more
- 35:16Speaker 1: different venues to run their weekly five k. If you remember,
- 35:20Speaker 1: last week was a Valentine's weekend and there is actually
- 35:23Speaker 1: a Valentine's park run in Ilford in Essex. Now this
- 35:27Speaker 1: normally I'll checked all the figures on this one. This
- 35:29Speaker 1: normally tracks around in recent weeks. Perhaps as many as
- 35:32Speaker 1: three hundred and fifty were Last Saturday, two three hundred
- 35:37Speaker 1: and thirty three runners turned up and took part, breaking
- 35:41Speaker 1: the all time record. The organizers must have been flabbergasted.
- 35:45Speaker 1: They had about seventy volunteers on standby so they did
- 35:48Speaker 1: cover it, but three local athletes joined in the fun,
- 35:52Speaker 1: Henry and Amy Axon the Plus at Jason Crockford. And
- 35:55Speaker 1: by the way, it is actually called a Valentine's Park,
- 35:58Speaker 1: it's called All Year End. This wasn't just a one off.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Tony Scott found his park run in Penrith, which is
- 36:05Speaker 1: in Cumbria in England. You know, I'm glad I looked
- 36:09Speaker 1: it up actually because I thought it was in Scotland,
- 36:11Speaker 1: but it's not. It's not far from the border, but
- 36:14Speaker 1: it is in England, in Cumbria. Former guest of the
- 36:17Speaker 1: show Trevor devoot he found a park run in southwest
- 36:20Speaker 1: London in Tooton Common, and the Kate Evans found her
- 36:24Speaker 1: park run in Sutcliffe Park in south east London. And
- 36:28Speaker 1: finally Simon Ramsay run the Cunningar Park Run, which is
- 36:32Speaker 1: in Scotland. It's just south of Glasgow. And now keep
- 36:35Speaker 1: an eye on social media this weekend because Folks and
- 36:38Speaker 1: Running Club are doing a takeover. They are taking over
- 36:40Speaker 1: all the positions, all the marshaling, all the timekeeping and
- 36:44Speaker 1: they're even providing the pacers for the run. But the
- 36:47Speaker 1: lees has been changed. They've been doing some work up
- 36:49Speaker 1: there on that sort of narrow path that there was
- 36:52Speaker 1: a bit of a spillage collapse over the side. So
- 36:56Speaker 1: so keep an eye on social media to see what's
- 36:59Speaker 1: going on with the course. Well that's about all the
- 37:02Speaker 1: news Networ've got at the moment, so we're going to
- 37:05Speaker 1: play out with this one. This is somebody I wish
- 37:08Speaker 1: I had seen. Actually she did come to Folks the
