- 1:32Yale economists estimate Elon Musk's political activities cost
- 1:37Tesla between 1,000,000 and 1.26 million U.S. sales from October
- 1:432022 through April of 2025. Now the timing lines up with his
- 1:48acquisition of Twitter, which is now X of course, and his move
- 1:52into national politics. The data shows a sales hole that
- 1:56would not exist without the Musk partisan effect, which is how
- 2:01the researchers describe the pole of politics on purchasing.
- 2:05Now, how does the CE OS personal brand reshape the demand curve
- 2:09for Tesla vehicles? We're going to look into that
- 2:12today. The question sits on clear
- 2:16facts, though. The working paper comes through
- 2:19the National Bureau of Economic Research and uses county level
- 2:23registrations to isolate the effect.
- 2:26The authors attribute the gap to Musk's public alignment with
- 2:30Republican politics in his high dollar donations, which shifted
- 2:34a customer base that skewed Democratic.
- 2:37Now the basic of this paper that quantifies the gap directly.
- 2:44The Tesla's US unit sales would have come in 67 to 83% higher
- 2:49over that 31 month window without that part to set effect.
- 2:54The approach tracks monthly registrations and compares
- 2:58places where Democrats or Republicans dominate, which
- 3:01cleanly separates politics from other market drivers.
- 3:06Now the researchers find a matching boost for competitors.
- 3:09Electric and hybrid sales at rival brands rose thoroughly, 17
- 3:14to 22%, as Democratic leaning buyers moved away from Tesla,
- 3:20and the shift shows how brand perception migrates to the
- 3:23nearest substitute when values enter the purchase decision.
- 3:27The effect shows up vividly in California.
- 3:29Registrations fell 9.4% in the first quarter, while Tesla's
- 3:33share slid to 46.2%, and the paper argues that the state
- 3:38likely would have hit its 20260 emissions sales targets absent
- 3:44the partisan effect. California's role this Tesla's
- 3:47largest U.S. market turns that drop into a core business
- 3:50problem. Now, operational data from
- 3:53earlier this year points in the same direction.
- 3:55Tesla's global deliveries dropped 13% in the first quarter
- 3:58of 2025 as aging models, rising competition and brand pushback
- 4:03weighed on demand. And those numbers set the stage
- 4:06for the Yale analysis by showing pressure before the model lineup
- 4:10meaningfully changed. In the paper links part of the
- 4:14demand shift to Musk's high profile government role.
- 4:16His time leading the Department of Government efficiency during
- 4:20President Trump's term amplified partisan cues that many Tesla
- 4:24buyers disliked. That alignment create a
- 4:27political filter on an otherwise tech forward car purchase.
- 4:32Researchers also track how sentiment drift interacts with
- 4:35product strategy. They note a mild improvement
- 4:38when Tesla talked more about robo taxis and humanoid robots.
- 4:42But the perception lift did not close the sales gap.
- 4:45The narrative change moved opinions at the margin, while
- 4:49price cuts did most of the near term work.
- 4:52Now the ownership story connects to the government story.
- 4:56Tesla's chair warned that Musk could exit if investors reject
- 4:59his pay package. That headlines at a trillion
- 5:02dollar figure, which adds leadership risk on top of demand
- 5:06risk. And that warning puts boardroom
- 5:08dynamics on the same stage as sales math.
- 5:11Competitors fill the opening with speed and focus.
- 5:14Buyers who left Tesla favored hybrids and EVs from Ford,
- 5:17Hyundai, Kia, GM and Rivian, which offered fresh models and
- 5:21less political baggage. And those flows match the
- 5:24study's estimate of gains for rivals.
- 5:27And they show how preference can flip when customers feel value
- 5:30alignment elsewhere. You know the public narrative
- 5:33matters because it now shapes purchase intent at the county
- 5:37level. The study's method captures how
- 5:39partisanship predicts EV choice after controlling for other
- 5:43variables, which is rare in automotive research at this
- 5:46scale, and the results gives executives and investors A
- 5:50quantifiable measure of how public politics map to private
- 5:54buying. Tesla now faces a marketing
- 5:57problem tied to a leadership decision and problem.
- 6:02The brand must either neutralize the political signal or Elon or
- 6:08out innovate the perception tax that the paper measures.
- 6:12This is getting in the hands of every single investor in Tesla
- 6:16over the next few days. And when the vote comes up for
- 6:19Elon's trillion dollar pay package, this is going to weigh
- 6:23on all of them. And the company's next sales
- 6:26reports will show whether strategy or sentiment moves
- 6:29first. Now this data links Musk's
- 6:33political profile to a measurable million unit sales
- 6:37gap for Tesla in the US market. And if anybody that invests in
- 6:43Tesla doesn't see that now, they will.
