- 0:00Speaker 1: What is happening out in Texas. Andrew Zimmel filling in
- 0:03Speaker 1: for Craig Way the final day of a fun filled week.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Thank you for hanging out with us this afternoon. Got
- 0:11Speaker 1: a loaded show for you. Once again. I cannot believe
- 0:16Speaker 1: how much happens over twenty four hours. So that's what
- 0:19Speaker 1: we do over here, man, We keep it up to
- 0:22Speaker 1: date for you. We got all of the breaking news,
- 0:24Speaker 1: including a huge win for the Texas women's basketball team
- 0:29Speaker 1: yesterday against Missouri. We'll get back to that one in
- 0:32Speaker 1: a second. Victor wem Binyama, he makes his first All
- 0:35Speaker 1: Star appearance that was announced last night as well. We
- 0:40Speaker 1: talked to Vick Schaeffer earlier today with a little media availability,
- 0:44Speaker 1: and we go through the early, early early Heisman Trophy
- 0:51Speaker 1: favorites this hour and hour number one, and I'm gonna
- 0:55Speaker 1: tell you why, even though Arch Banding is right now
- 0:57Speaker 1: the betting favorite to win the twenty twenty five Heisman Trophy,
- 1:02Speaker 1: why you shouldn't put too many eggs in that basket,
- 1:06Speaker 1: and why you should be scouring college football rosters after
- 1:11Speaker 1: spring practice because most of the time it's guys who
- 1:15Speaker 1: aren't even in the top twenty they're not even on
- 1:17Speaker 1: the board who end up getting invited to New York.
- 1:21Speaker 1: But let's start back with Texas women's basketball at number five.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Texas women's team held Missouri to thirty six percent shooting
- 1:30Speaker 1: in the second half to rally back to win seventy
- 1:32Speaker 1: sixty one over the Tigers at the Movie Center on Thursday.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Rory Harmon recorded as season high ten assist to tie
- 1:40Speaker 1: her season high with six rebounds as well. Three Longhorns
- 1:45Speaker 1: scored in double figures, including Taylor Jones leading the way
- 1:48Speaker 1: with seventeen points and six rebounds, and Madison Booker, who
- 1:52Speaker 1: fall behind her with sixteen points and six rebounds. So
- 1:56Speaker 1: the game, the Texas started the game forcing two Missouri
- 1:59Speaker 1: turnovers in the opening two minutes. So Jones then connected
- 2:02Speaker 1: with a pair of free throws to finish the first quarter.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Longhorns trailed twenty to thirteen after scoring nine points in
- 2:09Speaker 1: the first Jones opened up the second quarter with the
- 2:11Speaker 1: layup assisted by Branda Pierce him with a three pointer
- 2:14Speaker 1: from Lee. Texas then went on a ten to oh
- 2:16Speaker 1: run just under three minutes to finish the half, trailing
- 2:20Speaker 1: thirty five to thirty three against Missouri. But this is
- 2:24Speaker 1: where things got interesting. Let's hear it. This is Craig
- 2:27Speaker 1: Way cut one. This is them taking the lead for
- 2:29Speaker 1: the first time in the game.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Hartman got a bat, drives had underneath it goes out,
- 2:35Speaker 2: the Booker fires up a three.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Go there you go.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Madison knocks it down. The long Horns up their first
- 2:42Speaker 2: leave of the night, thirty eight thirty five.
- 2:46Speaker 1: So Madison Booker, it took her a whole half to
- 2:49Speaker 1: secure a bucket last night, but when she did, she
- 2:53Speaker 1: came off again, had a very good night, ended up
- 2:57Speaker 1: being the second leading scorer for the Longhorns with sixteen
- 3:01Speaker 1: last night. Longhorns came back at half seven points for
- 3:05Speaker 1: Booker to take the lead Texas fourth three straight turnovers
- 3:07Speaker 1: to hel Missouri to over two minutes, scoring drought to
- 3:11Speaker 1: finish the third fifty two to forty five. Booker then
- 3:14Speaker 1: opened up the final quarter with a jumper above the Tigers,
- 3:18Speaker 1: leading sixty two to fifty seven, and then she holly
- 3:20Speaker 1: drained a three to put the Longhorns up by eight
- 3:24Speaker 1: with just over two minutes remaining. But I would see
- 3:28Speaker 1: the MVP from the game was Taylor Jones and she
- 3:31Speaker 1: had a big block.
- 3:36Speaker 2: This is joy to pass out front the Lunion randall,
- 3:38Speaker 2: here's ramdalled five and rounds Hi Dan rejected by Jones
- 3:42Speaker 2: just stood up and knocked it down and the loose
- 3:45Speaker 2: ball screwed up for Texas by Roy.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Harmenhal So Taylor Jones last night, twenty eight minutes of action,
- 3:51Speaker 1: six of twelve from the floor, five of six from
- 3:54Speaker 1: the free throw line, seventeen points to lead the Longhorns,
- 3:58Speaker 1: and that huge block as well well, and listening to
- 4:01Speaker 1: coach Vick Schaeffer earlier in the week talk about how
- 4:04Speaker 1: important this player was, how important Jones was to not
- 4:07Speaker 1: only their offensive game plan but the defensive game plan,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and how much she has grown as a player over
- 4:13Speaker 1: the season. It makes sense for her to be the
- 4:16Speaker 1: MVP of this game. Now the Longhorns, they have again
- 4:21Speaker 1: a tough stretch ahead of them, including a game on
- 4:25Speaker 1: Sunday coming up this week against Texas A and M.
- 4:30Speaker 1: And we'll hear from coach Schaeffer later in the program
- 4:32Speaker 1: talking about, you know, what does this rivalry really mean?
- 4:36Speaker 1: You know, Texas and Texas A and M have had
- 4:38Speaker 1: their battles, of course, and he went all the way
- 4:41Speaker 1: back to the Little Southwest Conference and said, hey, most
- 4:44Speaker 1: of these players aren't old enough to remember that they
- 4:46Speaker 1: don't remember this type of women's basketball rivalry. Then you
- 4:51Speaker 1: also have to look at the schedule for UT and
- 4:53Speaker 1: they have big games down the stretch, including a home
- 4:57Speaker 1: matchup on Super Bowl Sunday against South ca Carolina and
- 5:00Speaker 1: Don Staley's game Cocks have been unbelievable this season. I
- 5:06Speaker 1: was talking to Roger Wallace yesterday on the Craigway Show
- 5:09Speaker 1: Andrews I will filling in for Craig this week, and
- 5:12Speaker 1: we were saying that there feels like there's like six
- 5:15Speaker 1: teams and only four number one seeds when it comes
- 5:18Speaker 1: to bracket time, and I'm concerned how the SEC tournament
- 5:23Speaker 1: rolls out and what that might do to Texas's chance
- 5:26Speaker 1: to get a one seed when it comes to tournament time,
- 5:29Speaker 1: especially when you consider that the only two losses that
- 5:32Speaker 1: Texas has currently on their plate is a loss of
- 5:36Speaker 1: Notre Dame early in the season, then that lost to
- 5:38Speaker 1: South Carolina playing South Carolina Super Bowl Sunday one PM.
- 5:43Speaker 1: So honestly, you might be able to catch both. I
- 5:46Speaker 1: would be if I was in town. That is what
- 5:48Speaker 1: my game plan would be. Watch two of the best
- 5:51Speaker 1: women's basketball programs in the country and then jet over
- 5:55Speaker 1: into a Super Bowl party, and then that following Sunday
- 5:59Speaker 1: again in Austin back to back weekends. LSU comes to
- 6:03Speaker 1: town with Kim Mulkey in company, and that's another program
- 6:07Speaker 1: that looks like they're trying to secure a number one
- 6:10Speaker 1: seed come bracket time. February, of course, is the month
- 6:13Speaker 1: that everything ramps up. It gets more and more serious. Uh,
- 6:17Speaker 1: you want to be playing your best basketball in the
- 6:19Speaker 1: month of February so that you can take that momentum
- 6:22Speaker 1: into March and into the set tournament time as well
- 6:25Speaker 1: as March Madness. We'll hear more from a coach, Vick
- 6:28Speaker 1: Schaeffer coming up after the break. But I also want
- 6:32Speaker 1: to talk about Victor webbin Yama. He is the youngest
- 6:35Speaker 1: Spur to go to an All Star Game. This is
- 6:38Speaker 1: what sounded like last night on TNT TNT one.
- 6:43Speaker 4: This would be the last one, the last of sevens
- 6:47Speaker 4: picks by the coaches.
- 6:48Speaker 5: Come on, man, come on, All Star Oh this is.
- 6:51Speaker 6: Tough, This is tough, But I'm pulling for one guy
- 6:55Speaker 6: from the San Antonio Spurs, Victor Wembnyama.
- 6:59Speaker 4: That's another first time All Star in his second seven
- 7:04Speaker 4: twenty four a night is number sixteen. Eleven rebounds is
- 7:07Speaker 4: number eight. He leads the league in blocks with four
- 7:10Speaker 4: a game, ten games of thirty plus three games of
- 7:13Speaker 4: forty had fifty against Washington. He was fourth by the players,
- 7:18Speaker 4: fourth by the fans, second by the media, and the
- 7:21Speaker 4: coaches have selected Vic.
- 7:23Speaker 3: We'll deserved an NBA All Star.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Yeah, Victor Wemenyama makes the All Star Game. A day ago,
- 7:31Speaker 1: he was talking about getting or not getting calls. He
- 7:35Speaker 1: was unhappy how he was being refereed across the NBA.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Felt like he should be getting some calls that he
- 7:42Speaker 1: wasn't getting. And I said then, and I'll say it again, now,
- 7:46Speaker 1: only all stars get those type of calls. It doesn't
- 7:48Speaker 1: matter that here's a generational talent, it doesn't matter that
- 7:52Speaker 1: he's going to be the next face of the NBA.
- 7:54Speaker 1: You have to make an All Star game before you
- 7:56Speaker 1: start getting some of those calls. And now he's an
- 7:59Speaker 1: All Star, so now he will start getting those calls.
- 8:02Speaker 1: You mark my word. He's not going to get pushed
- 8:04Speaker 1: around by Zubac or anybody else now that he is
- 8:09Speaker 1: an All Star. But what caught my attention to youngest
- 8:13Speaker 1: spur to make an All Star game. And the graphics
- 8:16Speaker 1: team almost caught me because I saw that graphic yesterday
- 8:20Speaker 1: and I didn't see Spur in front of it. I
- 8:21Speaker 1: was like, is Victor woman ya, I'm about twenty one
- 8:23Speaker 1: years old. That can't be true that he's a young
- 8:25Speaker 1: He's the youngest Spur to make an All Star Game.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Still though, considering that franchise and how many times that
- 8:32Speaker 1: they've sent him duncan Tony Parker manage nobly and then
- 8:36Speaker 1: even further back, David Robinson, how many times they sent
- 8:39Speaker 1: those guys to the Marquee mid season matchup. It is
- 8:45Speaker 1: saying something how well that this organization has been able
- 8:48Speaker 1: to continue to put players out. We are still on
- 8:51Speaker 1: Darren Fox watch in San Antonio, trying to see where
- 8:56Speaker 1: he goes. The Sacramento Kings, it's been reported, are taking
- 9:00Speaker 1: offers for their All Star point guard Daron Fox earlier
- 9:04Speaker 1: this week had his preferred destination leaked. Now Rich Paul
- 9:10Speaker 1: has not confirmed it to any sources yet, saying that yes,
- 9:13Speaker 1: San Antonio is the place that he wants his player
- 9:17Speaker 1: to go to. Rich Paul, being dearon Fox's agent, hasn't
- 9:21Speaker 1: said like this is exactly where I want to go.
- 9:23Speaker 1: He hasn't made a public spectacle a la Jammy Butler. However,
- 9:28Speaker 1: the tea leaves say that the Aaron Fox wants to
- 9:31Speaker 1: come to the Alamo City. So does the Alamo City
- 9:34Speaker 1: want the Aaron Fox? If the numbers are right, we
- 9:38Speaker 1: will see how that goes. Again, preferred destination to San Antonio.
- 9:42Speaker 1: But you gotta have the pieces that you want to
- 9:45Speaker 1: move off of. The money has to work, and then
- 9:47Speaker 1: you consider with the new CBA and the aprons and
- 9:52Speaker 1: all of the money and the taxes and luxury tax
- 9:55Speaker 1: the NBA has made it very difficult for NBA gms
- 10:00Speaker 1: understand their collective bargaining agreement, let alone the casual fans.
- 10:04Speaker 1: So if this happens, it's going to happen in probably
- 10:08Speaker 1: the next week as we get closer to the NBA
- 10:10Speaker 1: trade deadline on February sixth. If it doesn't happen, then
- 10:14Speaker 1: the Kings are going to be in a load of
- 10:16Speaker 1: trouble because they'll have an all star point guard who's
- 10:19Speaker 1: disgruntled throughout the rest of the season as the Kings
- 10:21Speaker 1: continue to try to fight their way into the playoffs.
- 10:24Speaker 1: All Right, when we come back, head coach of the
- 10:26Speaker 1: Texas women's basketball team. Vick Schaeffer spoke to the media
- 10:30Speaker 1: a little over an hour ago gave us some insight
- 10:33Speaker 1: on where this program is, coming off of a win
- 10:36Speaker 1: against Missouri last night and going in to a weekend
- 10:39Speaker 1: matchup against Texas A and m Arrival. All that coming
- 10:42Speaker 1: up with the Craigway Show. Andrew Zimmole filling it for
- 10:45Speaker 1: Craigway on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Andrew
- 10:48Speaker 1: Zimmle getting pumped up on a Friday with you. You
- 10:51Speaker 1: heard about the free iHeartRadio app. Make sure you download
- 10:54Speaker 1: it and you put or put Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 10:58Speaker 1: hundred Zone as a preset. In fact, Buddy down here
- 11:02Speaker 1: in San Antonio, Uh, he didn't have or he had
- 11:05Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio, did not know how to listen to the Zone.
- 11:08Speaker 1: I was able to set it up for him so
- 11:10Speaker 1: that now the Zone is on his preset. Yeah, so
- 11:13Speaker 1: he can listen to the Craigweight Show wherever he goes
- 11:17Speaker 1: and you can too. Make sure you put the Zone
- 11:19Speaker 1: as a preset. In fact, last note, make the Zone
- 11:24Speaker 1: kve FM and one O three one all presets on
- 11:27Speaker 1: your iHeartRadio so you can listen to Longhorn Sports wherever
- 11:30Speaker 1: you are, because that's where the game was last night,
- 11:32Speaker 1: that UT women's basketball win against Missouri seventy to sixty one.
- 11:37Speaker 1: They were able to climb back, crawl back against the
- 11:41Speaker 1: Tigers to win that one and then move on now
- 11:44Speaker 1: to Texas A and M Speaking up, head coach Vick
- 11:47Speaker 1: Shafer spoke to the media today went over a bunch.
- 11:50Speaker 1: We're gonna hear from him right now. Here's head coach
- 11:54Speaker 1: Vic Shafer's opening statement to the media.
- 11:58Speaker 7: My opening thoughts, I'm tired and I haven't played a minute.
- 12:03Speaker 7: I our kids are, you know, I think with everything
- 12:11Speaker 7: that's happening right now within our program, with the sickness
- 12:14Speaker 7: and you know, just the effects of of our season
- 12:20Speaker 7: February first, just tomorrow, and I'm just really proud of
- 12:24Speaker 7: their grit. You know, a lot of toughness. Last night
- 12:28Speaker 7: not our best night. Give Missouri a ton of credit.
- 12:33Speaker 7: I say, this seems like a lot. Robin Pinston's a
- 12:36Speaker 7: heck of a coach. I've had to deal with her
- 12:40Speaker 7: and her teams a lot over the years, and.
- 12:44Speaker 5: They're never an easy out. And uh it just you
- 12:50Speaker 5: know last night.
- 12:51Speaker 7: You can try to convey that to your kids all
- 12:52Speaker 7: you want, but they experienced it and for half, you know,
- 12:57Speaker 7: it was it wasn't much fun. But I thought our
- 13:00Speaker 7: kids showed tremendous grit and toughness. You know, we got
- 13:06Speaker 7: through it, and it's another win in the sec and
- 13:08Speaker 7: we're gonna take those every day and twice on Sunday,
- 13:12Speaker 7: and so you know, you move on, but really really
- 13:17Speaker 7: proud of them.
- 13:18Speaker 5: Last night. We came in this morning, had breakfast, watch film.
- 13:22Speaker 5: That was it. That's all we did.
- 13:24Speaker 7: I'll bring them back this afternoon and we'll get some
- 13:27Speaker 7: things done and then I'm gonna let them get off
- 13:29Speaker 7: their feet. We got to practice here tomorrow before we
- 13:32Speaker 7: head over to College Station, and so, you know, it's
- 13:39Speaker 7: that time of year, and it's like I told them,
- 13:42Speaker 7: this is the time of year when teams do one
- 13:46Speaker 7: of two things.
- 13:48Speaker 5: They either keep going they embraced the grind.
- 13:52Speaker 7: Their truugh toughness and grit pay off and they keep
- 13:57Speaker 7: climbing the.
- 13:57Speaker 5: Ladder, or some people just fall off.
- 14:02Speaker 7: And you know, I think over the years, our teams
- 14:05Speaker 7: have typically stayed in the grind and embraced it and
- 14:10Speaker 7: and kept climbing the ladder. And so I'm I'm I'm
- 14:13Speaker 7: excited to see them this afternoon. They were really good
- 14:16Speaker 7: this morning, which I was proud of them, and I
- 14:19Speaker 7: just really, more than anything, wanted to get some good
- 14:21Speaker 7: food in them before they tackled the day and uh so.
- 14:26Speaker 5: Got to get ready to go play.
- 14:28Speaker 7: Obviously a really good A and M team there they
- 14:32Speaker 7: you know, Sunday, they're in a dogfight at LSU.
- 14:40Speaker 5: Down to the bitter end.
- 14:42Speaker 7: Did a great job, got really good players, obviously, got
- 14:48Speaker 7: a great coach and Joni. Uh and so we're gonna
- 14:53Speaker 7: have to, you know, go over there.
- 14:54Speaker 5: And obviously it's a game that means a lot to
- 14:57Speaker 5: a lot.
- 14:57Speaker 7: Of people, and I'm sure they'll a great crowd, probably
- 15:02Speaker 7: be Core Day or something like that, and so they'll
- 15:05Speaker 7: have they'll have a really good crowd, and and so
- 15:08Speaker 7: we're gonna have to go over there and play well.
- 15:09Speaker 5: But I remember taking a team over there three years ago.
- 15:15Speaker 7: And we went in there and played really well, really focused.
- 15:18Speaker 7: It was Rory's freshman year, I believe, and we went
- 15:21Speaker 7: over there and executed and played very well. So we're
- 15:24Speaker 7: gonna have to do that again again because we've got
- 15:30Speaker 7: to go over there. Got a great size, good guard
- 15:32Speaker 7: play they're just really, really good. They've had some great
- 15:36Speaker 7: wins over some top twenty fives this year, So it's
- 15:42Speaker 7: gonna be it's gonna be one that's got our full attention.
- 15:44Speaker 5: I can promise you our kids are.
- 15:46Speaker 7: They were laser focused in on it last night in
- 15:48Speaker 7: the locker room after the game. So and you know,
- 15:52Speaker 7: I don't know that we'll be any better off with
- 15:54Speaker 7: kids available, you know, on Sunday, if I had to
- 15:57Speaker 7: guess right now, we probably aren't.
- 15:58Speaker 5: But hopefully that can change.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Andrew zim Will
- 16:04Speaker 1: filling in for Craig Way on a free for all Friday,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and we're listening to head coach Vick Schaefer. Now, it's
- 16:09Speaker 1: been an open secret that the flu has absolutely torn
- 16:14Speaker 1: apart Central Texas. This is not something new. You know
- 16:17Speaker 1: about it as well as I do. How deadly, how
- 16:21Speaker 1: tough this flu virus can be. And it took out
- 16:24Speaker 1: five players from last night's roster for the University of Texas.
- 16:30Speaker 1: How do you juggle limiting practice but also knowing you
- 16:34Speaker 1: got players coming off sickness, coach.
- 16:38Speaker 7: Think you got to adjust, you know, And I think
- 16:41Speaker 7: that's what I'm doing. You know, last Friday, we basically
- 16:47Speaker 7: came in, watched film thirty minutes and went home. And
- 16:52Speaker 7: so that was after our Thursday night game with Tennessee,
- 16:57Speaker 7: and we had played on Monday Thursday and then had
- 17:00Speaker 7: to go to Ole, Miss on Sunday. So but again
- 17:02Speaker 7: I thought Sunday, our toughness really showed, you know, our perseverance,
- 17:07Speaker 7: our resilience was really on display and had a big
- 17:11Speaker 7: part in that win. But I do think it's a
- 17:16Speaker 7: it's a balancing act, you know, and I think you
- 17:19Speaker 7: have to take all that in consideration. And then I
- 17:21Speaker 7: listened to my kids, you know, I really do. I
- 17:25Speaker 7: listened to them. I talked to them, I ask them
- 17:27Speaker 7: how they're feeling, and so I try to be really,
- 17:32Speaker 7: really aware of everything. So it's a good point. It's
- 17:39Speaker 7: good question.
- 17:41Speaker 5: And you know, I don't. I think it's just a
- 17:43Speaker 5: time where you have to be really, really smart.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirty under the Zone. All right, So
- 17:51Speaker 1: Mason Booker has had some very fast starts over the
- 17:55Speaker 1: past couple of weeks. Last night, she was held in
- 17:57Speaker 1: the first half, but it was able to bounce back
- 18:00Speaker 1: and help rally in that second half. Are you emphasizing
- 18:03Speaker 1: a faster start for Booker on or our teams just
- 18:07Speaker 1: scouting her harder just from the jump coach.
- 18:12Speaker 7: Yeah, I think it's a little of both. And again
- 18:14Speaker 7: I think it's her. I think it's her being very
- 18:18Speaker 7: patient and kind of surveying the whole deal and trying
- 18:23Speaker 7: to get a feel for things. You know, I'm gonna
- 18:27Speaker 7: talk to her, you know, we're gonna we need her
- 18:29Speaker 7: to be a little more assertive.
- 18:31Speaker 5: But at the same time, I just think that's her really,
- 18:37Speaker 5: you know, really kind.
- 18:38Speaker 7: Of taking everything in and paying attention and and getting
- 18:42Speaker 7: a feel for what's available. And then you know, I
- 18:46Speaker 7: probably didn't need to be a little more uh demanding
- 18:50Speaker 7: and getting her to to try to maybe you know,
- 18:54Speaker 7: do a little more, and me getting her involved a
- 18:56Speaker 7: little more. You know, quite honestly, I can probably do
- 18:59Speaker 7: a little bit too. And so, you know, again I
- 19:04Speaker 7: think it's I think she's really been good about getting
- 19:07Speaker 7: a feel for what's out there, what's going on, how
- 19:10Speaker 7: people are trying to defend her. She's in the huddle
- 19:12Speaker 7: last night talking, you know, telling me what's going on,
- 19:17Speaker 7: telling me how they're doing things. And again, just having
- 19:20Speaker 7: that person in your huddle that can convey that to me,
- 19:28Speaker 7: whether it's her or Rory or anyone else.
- 19:31Speaker 5: But just having that she's just so smart.
- 19:35Speaker 7: The kid is just a you know, she's just really
- 19:37Speaker 7: really smart, and you know, to be able to tell
- 19:42Speaker 7: me that, tell our team that, really, you know, I
- 19:45Speaker 7: think that again, just says a lot about the kid.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. All right, So coach,
- 19:53Speaker 1: you're coming down the stretch. We're going in the month
- 19:56Speaker 1: of February. You're on a five game win streak. You're
- 19:58Speaker 1: taking on Rival Tech to C and M on Sunday
- 20:01Speaker 1: at five pm. This is cut number five. Do you
- 20:04Speaker 1: see your road to the SEC title? Are you even
- 20:07Speaker 1: thinking about that right now?
- 20:11Speaker 7: I don't see any map but the one that goes
- 20:13Speaker 7: to College Station.
- 20:16Speaker 5: That's that's the.
- 20:16Speaker 7: Only map, and I'm real familiar with that road. So
- 20:21Speaker 7: that's the only thing I'm focused on. You know, again,
- 20:27Speaker 7: when you start looking at you know, when you're climbing
- 20:29Speaker 7: that mountain and you're halfway up and you start looking
- 20:32Speaker 7: at the top, that's when you miss a step and
- 20:34Speaker 7: you fall down, and then you got to start back
- 20:36Speaker 7: all over again.
- 20:38Speaker 5: So I'm just focused on one day at a time.
- 20:40Speaker 7: I'm trying to I'm agonizing this morning, sitting here trying
- 20:43Speaker 7: to figure out how what to do and how to
- 20:45Speaker 7: do it today with this team, knowing you know where
- 20:49Speaker 7: we are right now in the in the process of
- 20:53Speaker 7: having nine players, and hopefully I hadn't lost any more
- 20:56Speaker 7: between now this morning at eight am, when I are
- 20:59Speaker 7: eight forty, when I turn them loose to go to class,
- 21:02Speaker 7: and when I get them back at one thirty. But
- 21:04Speaker 7: I think it's it's kind of a fluid situation, and
- 21:08Speaker 7: so yeah, I'm just I'm really really intentional about the
- 21:14Speaker 7: next game.
- 21:15Speaker 5: And that's it.
- 21:16Speaker 1: We'll hear more from coach Schaeffer as the program continues.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Andrew Zimbil hanging out with you on a free for
- 21:22Speaker 1: all Friday when we return. It is inconceivable, not that
- 21:27Speaker 1: it's a Friday. No, it's an inconceivable Friday, that's right,
- 21:30Speaker 1: which means it's a Florida Man Friday. Yes, and do
- 21:35Speaker 1: we have some stories for you, including a fight in
- 21:39Speaker 1: the buffet line. Yeah, we got it all for you
- 21:42Speaker 1: over here. Craig Wait Show. Andrew zimble filling in for
- 21:44Speaker 1: Craig Way on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone
- 21:47Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone Andrews, I will fill
- 21:50Speaker 1: you in for the voice of Longhorns Craig Way on
- 21:53Speaker 1: a free for all Friday edition of the show. I
- 21:57Speaker 1: want to thank you guys for hanging out as we
- 21:59Speaker 1: start our number two dose on the Craig Way Show.
- 22:04Speaker 1: A lot to get into, including set your watches. About
- 22:08Speaker 1: fifteen minutes from now, Craig will be joining the program
- 22:11Speaker 1: talking about his travels after yesterday's debacle, having to go
- 22:16Speaker 1: taking a hundred plus dollar Uber ride to Memphis, to
- 22:20Speaker 1: fly to Dallas, to fly to Austin to call the
- 22:23Speaker 1: game where Texas women won big. They were able to
- 22:27Speaker 1: claw back and beat Missouri seventy to sixty one. In
- 22:32Speaker 1: that game, Taylor Jones was your leader in the clubhouse.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Really performed well seventeen points six rebounds of the win.
- 22:40Speaker 1: The women's team travels to College Station to take on
- 22:45Speaker 1: A and M on Sunday. Also keeping an eye out
- 22:50Speaker 1: on news out of San Antonio, as according to Don Harris,
- 22:54Speaker 1: it looks like a four team trade is in the works.
- 22:57Speaker 1: He said, stay tuned, so we are keeping an eye
- 23:00Speaker 1: on that one. As de Aaron Fox his preferred destination
- 23:04Speaker 1: to San Antonio. You gotta remember too, Jimmy Butler not
- 23:07Speaker 1: happy in Miami. I have to think that there has
- 23:11Speaker 1: to be another player in that move, a big name
- 23:13Speaker 1: guy to try to make all this money work and
- 23:16Speaker 1: massage it out the Phoenix Suns with Bradley Beale even
- 23:19Speaker 1: with the no trade clause, So a lot of moving parts.
- 23:22Speaker 1: We will see if it ends with San Antonio adding
- 23:25Speaker 1: an All Star to put next to their newest All Star,
- 23:28Speaker 1: Victor Wimbinyama, who gets his first All Star appearance as
- 23:33Speaker 1: a reserve. Voted on by the coaches last night on TNT.
- 23:37Speaker 1: They made the announcement and he look I have been
- 23:41Speaker 1: saying from day one, this is a generational talent point
- 23:45Speaker 1: plank period. He is the next face of the NBA
- 23:49Speaker 1: and Spurs fans. He is going to be an NBA
- 23:53Speaker 1: champion in the Alamo City. Never forget, I'm not wrong,
- 23:57Speaker 1: I'm just early. I'm calling it today. Let's hear from
- 24:00Speaker 1: Vic Schaeffer though, because the UT women's basketball coach had
- 24:04Speaker 1: media availability today and spoke at length about a number
- 24:09Speaker 1: of things with the program, but two things really stood
- 24:11Speaker 1: out to me. Talking about his time at Sam Houston
- 24:16Speaker 1: State and what it took to kind of build that
- 24:19Speaker 1: program up and the expectations right. So the question was
- 24:23Speaker 1: do you ever stop and talk about what you need
- 24:26Speaker 1: to do when it comes to the NCAA tournament and
- 24:29Speaker 1: kind of those like next steps. And he spoke about
- 24:31Speaker 1: sam Houston State, where he was an assistant coach at
- 24:35Speaker 1: one time, and about how they were trying to build
- 24:39Speaker 1: a program there. So let's hear this is his story
- 24:41Speaker 1: talking about sam Houston State.
- 24:44Speaker 7: You know, after we bake Maryland, I told him, hey,
- 24:47Speaker 7: that's a win that's going to really help you when
- 24:49Speaker 7: it comes in, say a tournament time. It'll help you
- 24:51Speaker 7: with with how they view us and seating and things
- 24:54Speaker 7: like that. I mean, our non conference record.
- 24:57Speaker 5: Not to mention our net all that is really good.
- 25:01Speaker 7: Those kids, you know, embraced the grind and embrace being
- 25:05Speaker 7: on the road.
- 25:06Speaker 5: You know, I told them how proud I was of
- 25:07Speaker 5: them and and and all that.
- 25:09Speaker 7: But you know, when when I was building a program
- 25:13Speaker 7: at State, you know, I remember that second year we
- 25:19Speaker 7: only had fourteen teams in the league, and I put the.
- 25:21Speaker 5: Top seven on one side and.
- 25:23Speaker 7: The next seven on the other side, and I said, hey,
- 25:27Speaker 7: I want to finish number one on this side, and
- 25:30Speaker 7: let's see how many we can get on this side.
- 25:34Speaker 7: And so when you're building a prey gives those kids
- 25:36Speaker 7: something to shoot for, you know, because we were building
- 25:39Speaker 7: a program, I mean, we were trying to build a
- 25:45Speaker 7: way of life, a way of doing things, and so
- 25:48Speaker 7: it gave them an idea. Okay, these seven over here,
- 25:51Speaker 7: we want to go six and oh or seven and
- 25:53Speaker 7: oh and these over here now we need to do
- 25:57Speaker 7: the best we can over here. But this group right here,
- 26:00Speaker 7: we got to catch discreup before we can catch discroup.
- 26:03Speaker 5: That makes sense.
- 26:04Speaker 7: That's not where we are now here at Texas. So
- 26:07Speaker 7: I don't really get ahead of myself. I don't really
- 26:09Speaker 7: talk about my kids are really smart.
- 26:13Speaker 5: I think that was again.
- 26:15Speaker 7: You can tell them how good you think somebody is,
- 26:17Speaker 7: or how good some coach is, or all that.
- 26:21Speaker 5: They're going to make up their own mind based off
- 26:23Speaker 5: of what.
- 26:26Speaker 7: They'll make up their own mind about how good they
- 26:28Speaker 7: think somebody is based off of record or who they
- 26:32Speaker 7: know on the team or all that. So I just
- 26:37Speaker 7: try to put my head down, man, head down, rear
- 26:40Speaker 7: end up, plow ahead. That's just the only way I
- 26:43Speaker 7: know how to do it.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. The zone that is head
- 26:48Speaker 1: coach of the Texas Longhorns Vick Schaeffer after a win
- 26:52Speaker 1: on a Thursday night against Missouri, a game where the
- 26:56Speaker 1: Longhorns had to battle back trailed for most of the
- 26:59Speaker 1: first time, actually all the first half. Took the third
- 27:03Speaker 1: quarter for them to finally take the lead and then
- 27:05Speaker 1: not look back. He also spoke about Sydney Carter, who
- 27:10Speaker 1: is an assistant coach and is the director of player
- 27:14Speaker 1: Personnel for the University of Texas. Now, if that name
- 27:18Speaker 1: sounds familiar, well it should. Carter was a standout player
- 27:21Speaker 1: at Texas A and M from twenty eight to twenty
- 27:23Speaker 1: twelve under Schaeffer. During her time in Aggie Land, she
- 27:26Speaker 1: helped her team win the twenty eleven national championship in
- 27:30Speaker 1: the twenty ten Big Twelve Tournament. As a player, she's
- 27:34Speaker 1: a three time captain defensive anchor of A and M,
- 27:37Speaker 1: earned a spot on the Big twelve All Defensive Team
- 27:40Speaker 1: in eleven and twelve, and additionally she took home missed
- 27:44Speaker 1: defense three times. She selected twenty seventh overall in the WNBA,
- 27:49Speaker 1: and Shaffer goes on and talks about her impact on
- 27:53Speaker 1: this team and her availability around this program.
- 27:58Speaker 7: It's the interestingt credibility, she's wanted at the highest level,
- 28:01Speaker 7: She's played at the highest level. You know, I have
- 28:07Speaker 7: to get on her sometimes because I want more, you know,
- 28:11Speaker 7: I just think she has so much to offer, and
- 28:14Speaker 7: you know when her when her voice is raised in practice.
- 28:18Speaker 1: They listen sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Andrew
- 28:23Speaker 1: Zimmle filling in for Craig Way on a Friday. Now,
- 28:26Speaker 1: this Texas women's basketball team, they have their work cut
- 28:29Speaker 1: out for them this weekend. Sunday they travel down to
- 28:33Speaker 1: College Station to take on Texas A and M in
- 28:37Speaker 1: the Lone Star Showdown. That dam tips off at five pm.
- 28:42Speaker 1: And then a game on Super Bowl Sunday against South Carolina,
- 28:45Speaker 1: then a game against Kentucky at a game against LSU,
- 28:48Speaker 1: And it doesn't get easier for Schaeffer and company. So
- 28:53Speaker 1: the question then becomes, when you look at Texas A
- 28:58Speaker 1: and M, when you look look at this team, what
- 29:02Speaker 1: challenges do they present? This is kind number seven.
- 29:07Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean they got good players, you know, Lauren
- 29:10Speaker 7: being one of them. You know, I really hate it,
- 29:14Speaker 7: uh for Koolabali and so last year and and it's
- 29:18Speaker 7: just a terrible, terrible thing for her and the team.
- 29:24Speaker 5: But I still look at their roster. I watched their
- 29:26Speaker 5: game last night.
- 29:27Speaker 7: I've watched the L s U game and and some others,
- 29:31Speaker 7: like they got really good personnel and and uh so
- 29:36Speaker 7: their athleticism, you know, ah Malone's much improved to me.
- 29:43Speaker 7: She is physical, you know, and and obviously we've we've
- 29:47Speaker 7: got some good.
- 29:48Speaker 5: Bigs down there to go with that.
- 29:50Speaker 7: So you know, they've got size, They've got several big,
- 29:54Speaker 7: big kids and in long.
- 29:56Speaker 5: And length, and so you know that concerns me there, their.
- 30:00Speaker 7: Ability to out on the perimeter with those guards.
- 30:04Speaker 5: There's a lot about that team that concerns me.
- 30:07Speaker 7: So you know we're gonna have to again well there,
- 30:09Speaker 7: it's a home game for them. They've obviously played well
- 30:13Speaker 7: and at home beating you know, I had a good
- 30:15Speaker 7: run there with Georgia and Kentucky again, Kentucky being a
- 30:19Speaker 7: top fifteen team when they beat them. So our kids
- 30:23Speaker 7: are fully aware of how good A and M is
- 30:26Speaker 7: and how good we're gonna have to play.
- 30:27Speaker 1: On Sunday Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone, Andrews
- 30:33Speaker 1: Zimmel hanging out with you on a free for all Friday,
- 30:36Speaker 1: we listened to head coach and Vick Schaeffer talk about
- 30:39Speaker 1: his team as a gear up for a big game
- 30:42Speaker 1: this Sunday against Texas A and M. Now, the relationship
- 30:47Speaker 1: be between coaches in college basketball, especially women's hoops, is
- 30:51Speaker 1: a very unique and interesting one because you have situations
- 30:55Speaker 1: like the one we have this weekend with Johnny Taylor,
- 30:58Speaker 1: who has had Longhorn players on her US national team.
- 31:02Speaker 7: Uh.
- 31:03Speaker 1: And you have a very respectful rivalry in the state,
- 31:07Speaker 1: especially in the conference between Texas and M and Texas, Uh,
- 31:12Speaker 1: what does the rival what is your rivalry? Which coach
- 31:15Speaker 1: with coach Taylor looked like.
- 31:20Speaker 7: Yeah, I think Jony and I have a have a
- 31:22Speaker 7: good relationship.
- 31:24Speaker 5: You know, we had one when she was at Georgia.
- 31:28Speaker 7: You know, I think there's a lot of mutual respect
- 31:30Speaker 7: and admiration, and certainly is from my end. You know,
- 31:34Speaker 7: we we uh, we we visited on the on the
- 31:38Speaker 7: phone this year about certain things. We've we see each
- 31:41Speaker 7: other on the road. So I have a lot of
- 31:44Speaker 7: respect and admiration for her. And and again it's it's uh,
- 31:50Speaker 7: you know, I think we both understand you know, where
- 31:54Speaker 7: we are who were coaching and and in this particular game,
- 31:59Speaker 7: you know the meaning.
- 32:00Speaker 5: So I certainly. Do you know.
- 32:03Speaker 7: I've been on both sides of it, and there's no
- 32:06Speaker 7: question I have a complete understanding of it.
- 32:09Speaker 1: We'll hear more from Coach Schaeffer as the program continues
- 32:12Speaker 1: on The Craigways Show. All start game happening in a
- 32:16Speaker 1: few weeks for the NBA and the final announcement for
- 32:20Speaker 1: the reserves. We're given last night on NBA on TNT
- 32:24Speaker 1: Victor Woman Yama one of the first time All Stars,
- 32:26Speaker 1: along with a couple of other first time All Stars.
- 32:29Speaker 1: But there's only so many spots on the team, which
- 32:33Speaker 1: means somebody gets left out. I'm looking at you, Trey Young.
- 32:38Speaker 1: We'll hear more about that coming up later in the show,
- 32:40Speaker 1: but first it's Craig Way joining us from an undisclosed location.
- 32:44Speaker 1: We'll find out where Craig is. We will also find
- 32:47Speaker 1: out what last night's game told him about this women's
- 32:51Speaker 1: basketball team and what tomorrow's game against LSU could mean
- 32:55Speaker 1: for the men's team. All that Coming off of The
- 32:57Speaker 1: Craigway Show, andrews I will fill in for Craig on
- 33:00Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred of The Zone. Andrew Zimbol
- 33:03Speaker 1: filling in for Craig Way maybe a one day future
- 33:07Speaker 1: Texas Radio Hall of Famer. His name's on the program.
- 33:10Speaker 1: He is in an airport, I imagine, Craig, how is
- 33:14Speaker 1: that travel today, my.
- 33:15Speaker 8: Friend, Well, it's in process and in progress. I'm actually
- 33:22Speaker 8: at THEFB airport in between the connecting flights from Austin
- 33:27Speaker 8: on my way to Baton Rouge. So in order to
- 33:29Speaker 8: go east, you gotta go north. So we start off
- 33:32Speaker 8: buying going north and up to the FW and now
- 33:38Speaker 8: preparing to go east. Well, once I get out on
- 33:42Speaker 8: the plane at THEFWL southeast, that sort of thing all good.
- 33:46Speaker 1: So let's talk about the game last night. You did
- 33:48Speaker 1: an incredible job on the call, but you always do.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Seventy sixty one win for the Texas women's basketball team,
- 33:54Speaker 1: and my question to you is what does the major
- 33:57Speaker 1: takeaway from that win?
- 34:00Speaker 8: Believe that Dick Schaeffer's right when he says he's coaching
- 34:04Speaker 8: against ghosts, and we talked about it in the pre
- 34:07Speaker 8: game as well. In other words, a team that went
- 34:08Speaker 8: in at twelve and ten only one went in conference
- 34:11Speaker 8: play is still dangerous. And they've been dangerous. And some games,
- 34:14Speaker 8: even though they only won one and they pushed Texas,
- 34:17Speaker 8: they were as many as nine in the first half.
- 34:20Speaker 8: They led by two and a half after long warts
- 34:23Speaker 8: finished the first half of a twelve to three run,
- 34:25Speaker 8: but then they fell behind again out of the gate,
- 34:27Speaker 8: and the second half. They trailed by seven at one
- 34:30Speaker 8: point in the second half, then finally bought their way
- 34:32Speaker 8: back in finally got the lead on the Madison Booker three,
- 34:35Speaker 8: and then after that then Texas started to kick it
- 34:38Speaker 8: in the high gear, but Missouri wouldn't go away. They
- 34:42Speaker 8: hung around and made it a contest all the way
- 34:45Speaker 8: down to the last couple of minutes of the game,
- 34:47Speaker 8: I say, their last two and a half minutes, and
- 34:48Speaker 8: then Texas is able to push them away. But the
- 34:51Speaker 8: final margin of nine points was their largest lead of
- 34:54Speaker 8: the ball game, and they didn't have the leaders I
- 34:56Speaker 8: mean until midway through the first So you know that
- 34:58Speaker 8: old thing we've heard. I first started hearing it, I
- 35:01Speaker 8: think from Mac Brown, and then we've heard it from
- 35:03Speaker 8: coaches in every sport of Texas. That's they're going to
- 35:06Speaker 8: get the opponent's best shot. And they certainly got a
- 35:09Speaker 8: really good shot and a good test from Missouri last
- 35:11Speaker 8: night before the women pulled away to win by nine.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Do you think that there's anything that other teams are
- 35:16Speaker 1: going to take away. I know South Carolina knocked Texas
- 35:18Speaker 1: off once already this season. LSU's coming up on the schedule.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Do you think that there's something that Missouri did well
- 35:25Speaker 1: that other teams are going to try to copy? Well?
- 35:30Speaker 8: I think always any time a good team gets in
- 35:33Speaker 8: a fight with another team and really get pushed, future
- 35:36Speaker 8: opponents will always look to see if there's something, if
- 35:38Speaker 8: there's some sort of a blueprint they can follow for that.
- 35:41Speaker 8: And probably the one thing I think that opponents might
- 35:45Speaker 8: take away, but this is nothing new, really, is that
- 35:48Speaker 8: if you can get driple penetration into the paint and
- 35:52Speaker 8: knock down some mid range jumpers, you're really going to
- 35:54Speaker 8: put yourself in good position to win the basketball game.
- 35:57Speaker 8: Missouri shot sixty four percent in the first quarter and
- 35:59Speaker 8: I think over fifty percent after the half. They hit
- 36:04Speaker 8: a lot of mid range jumpers and a few threes,
- 36:07Speaker 8: and if you can do.
- 36:07Speaker 5: That, you have a chance.
- 36:08Speaker 8: The obstacle there is Texas does such a good job,
- 36:11Speaker 8: you know, defending on the perimeter and forcing turnovers and
- 36:14Speaker 8: backward and they did a much better job of that
- 36:16Speaker 8: in the second half, and then the long words obviously
- 36:19Speaker 8: use their length and their size inside to be able
- 36:23Speaker 8: to have an opportunity to dominate the glass, and that
- 36:26Speaker 8: those are the big challenges that upcoming opponents lab other
- 36:30Speaker 8: than I would say South Carolina and LSU because they
- 36:33Speaker 8: both have lank, they both have sized. South Carolina already
- 36:36Speaker 8: proved that in the first game in Texas. I think
- 36:39Speaker 8: also made some making characteristic mistakes in that first game
- 36:42Speaker 8: that I don't think they'll repeat, you know, in front
- 36:45Speaker 8: of the friendly home crowd instead of the hostel seventeen
- 36:47Speaker 8: thousand they saw in Columbia three weeks ago.
- 36:50Speaker 1: Well, the other thing too is that I guess we
- 36:52Speaker 1: have to get the Germannacs in the wash your hands
- 36:54Speaker 1: because the flu did more I think the hindered Texas
- 36:58Speaker 1: than maybe that Missouri defense.
- 37:00Speaker 8: Well, it was sweeping through the team, for sure. They
- 37:04Speaker 8: had the flute bud going through them, and it mainly
- 37:09Speaker 8: I think affected Justice Carlton and a couple of the
- 37:12Speaker 8: players you know, and a little bit to Leah Moore.
- 37:15Speaker 8: But her main issue has been the tendonitis and the knee.
- 37:18Speaker 8: She was not going to be available regardless last night,
- 37:20Speaker 8: so they were all fighting through that hopefully. Uh, they
- 37:24Speaker 8: won't have that'll bit clear of it when they go
- 37:26Speaker 8: to College Station on Sunday to take on Texas A
- 37:29Speaker 8: and M.
- 37:29Speaker 1: All right, let's talk about your game you have tomorrow,
- 37:31Speaker 1: Craig Lsu Texas. It's gonna be a big matchup, I
- 37:36Speaker 1: think for the Longhorns. This men's team comes off a
- 37:39Speaker 1: loss earlier this week. Trey Johnson's been great. What do
- 37:44Speaker 1: we think about about this game coming into it?
- 37:47Speaker 8: Well, Rodney Terry likes to say about he wants his
- 37:50Speaker 8: team to be an everyday kind of basketball team, and
- 37:53Speaker 8: I've tried to get him to define that in greater detail,
- 37:56Speaker 8: and what it means is it really just means, you know,
- 37:59Speaker 8: more consistent play, both in how they run their offense
- 38:04Speaker 8: and also what they're doing and defending. And he really
- 38:06Speaker 8: wants them, as he says, to sit down and defend.
- 38:08Speaker 8: And in the games they won this year in conference play,
- 38:11Speaker 8: that's exactly what they've done. And they did it in
- 38:13Speaker 8: the second half of the game last Saturday against Texas
- 38:16Speaker 8: A and M. Once they got down twenty two points,
- 38:18Speaker 8: they rebounded the basketball much better. You know. It was
- 38:22Speaker 8: it was encouraging that Arthur Klumba was able to play
- 38:26Speaker 8: thirty two minutes in the game coming off the knee injury,
- 38:29Speaker 8: and hopefully that knee responds well and he's able to
- 38:32Speaker 8: go because they're going to need it to rebound against
- 38:34Speaker 8: LSU for sure.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Well, I was going to say too, LSU is coming
- 38:36Speaker 1: off three straight losses to top ranked teams Texas A
- 38:40Speaker 1: and m Alabama.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Auburn.
- 38:41Speaker 1: You do not want to get the wrath of the
- 38:43Speaker 1: Tiger on Saturday.
- 38:45Speaker 8: Well, this is another one of those teams that is
- 38:48Speaker 8: better than the record indicates. It's another one of those
- 38:51Speaker 8: teams that could be dangerous. You know, they were way
- 38:53Speaker 8: down Auburn and then they came back to be a
- 38:55Speaker 8: game against the Tigers late before succumbing to obviously the
- 38:59Speaker 8: number one team in the country. In all so, they
- 39:02Speaker 8: are dangerous. They have some guys who can shoot the basketball,
- 39:06Speaker 8: and I think Texas needs to have a good shooting game,
- 39:08Speaker 8: but most important, keep the defensive clamps on LSU to
- 39:12Speaker 8: have a good shot to win this game.
- 39:14Speaker 1: Now, what do you think about when we talk about
- 39:16Speaker 1: the march maddness aspect of this whole thing, Because I
- 39:19Speaker 1: have stayed by my take that the regular season is important.
- 39:23Speaker 1: You want to get those big wins, but when it
- 39:25Speaker 1: comes to the SEC tournament play, that to me is
- 39:27Speaker 1: the most important thing for this team.
- 39:29Speaker 8: Well, they've got a stack wins I think in the
- 39:33Speaker 8: regular season for sure, they have to do that. Andrew,
- 39:37Speaker 8: and you know, there's a lot of debate as to
- 39:40Speaker 8: how many wins in conference play can land you an
- 39:43Speaker 8: at large bit in the NCAA tournament if you don't
- 39:46Speaker 8: win the conference tournament, And a lot of the prevailing
- 39:49Speaker 8: wisdom seems to be if you can win even a
- 39:52Speaker 8: few of seven games in this league, the number one
- 39:54Speaker 8: conference in the country, if you can do that, then
- 39:57Speaker 8: you're probably going to get in eight wins for sure.
- 39:59Speaker 8: An eight and t conference mark we do it at
- 40:01Speaker 8: seven to eleven in the toughest conference in the country,
- 40:04Speaker 8: gives you a good opportunity. If you do that, then
- 40:07Speaker 8: maybe you don't have to win two or three games
- 40:09Speaker 8: in the conference turnat because remember, unless you finish in
- 40:12Speaker 8: the top eight, you're gonna be playing. You're gonna have
- 40:15Speaker 8: to win at least four games to win the tournament,
- 40:17Speaker 8: and if you don't finish in the top twelve, then
- 40:20Speaker 8: you're gonna have to wind up playing as many at
- 40:23Speaker 8: winning as many as five games to win the tournament.
- 40:25Speaker 8: That's a tough ask to do it. So you want
- 40:28Speaker 8: to stack as many as wins as you can in
- 40:30Speaker 8: conference play.
- 40:31Speaker 1: All right, let's talk about Cam Carter, the senior four LSU.
- 40:34Speaker 1: We joked earlier this week, I said every college basketball
- 40:37Speaker 1: team has just a Smorgasborg. It's like, okay, well we
- 40:39Speaker 1: have a young star and then we also have a
- 40:41Speaker 1: couple of transfer portal guys. What can you tell me
- 40:43Speaker 1: about Cam Carter Craig.
- 40:45Speaker 8: Well, you know, like a lot of the players in
- 40:48Speaker 8: the SEC, a lot of these guys are really good
- 40:53Speaker 8: if you give them too much space, give them an
- 40:55Speaker 8: opportunity to create their shot, and then let them be
- 41:00Speaker 8: muscular as well as a good way to put it
- 41:02Speaker 8: around the rim as well. And Carter's one of those guys,
- 41:05Speaker 8: just like other teams are finding out about Trey Johnson.
- 41:07Speaker 8: Give him enough space and he can do damage to you.
- 41:10Speaker 8: So the long wards will have to dilate on him
- 41:13Speaker 8: for sure, and not let him get going. That's the
- 41:16Speaker 8: thing about you know, a lot of these really good
- 41:18Speaker 8: players is young players. They get going, then they're hard
- 41:21Speaker 8: to stop.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like an avalanche man. The butt of the
- 41:24Speaker 1: baskets keep coming and coming and coming. Is Craig Way
- 41:27Speaker 1: his names on the program. He is traveling tomorrow he
- 41:31Speaker 1: has the game of the weekend Texas and LSU. Creigor
- 41:35Speaker 1: Am I missing anything for you?
- 41:38Speaker 8: I think that's got it now it's on the catch
- 41:40Speaker 8: a plane.
- 41:41Speaker 1: Catch that playing, Craig, catch that playing. Thanks so much, Ben,
- 41:45Speaker 1: you bet Andrew, take care, thanks, take care all right.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Craig Way Red coming up tomorrow, Big game Texas and LSU.
- 41:53Speaker 1: You can hear that game of the Texas Radio Network
- 41:56Speaker 1: as well as right here on the Zone Cavid FM
- 41:58Speaker 1: in one O three one as well. But when we
- 42:01Speaker 1: come back, all star snubs, somebody's got to be it.
- 42:06Speaker 1: We'll tell you who they were. Next The Craig Way Show.
- 42:08Speaker 1: Andrew zim Will filling in for Craig on Sports Radio
- 42:10Speaker 1: AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Andrews Zimbil filling in for
- 42:13Speaker 1: Craig Way on a free for all Friday edition of
- 42:17Speaker 1: the program. Hope you guys are having a good one
- 42:20Speaker 1: as we continue to our work our way towards the weekend.
- 42:24Speaker 1: Big weekend too for UT basketball Texas takes on LSU tomorrow.
- 42:30Speaker 1: That game at five pm. You can hear it here
- 42:31Speaker 1: on the radio the LongRun Radio Network. You also can
- 42:35Speaker 1: hear ut women's basketball versus Texas A and M. That
- 42:39Speaker 1: game will be on one O three one as well,
- 42:42Speaker 1: I believe. So let's talk about the All Star Game.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Do you care about it? There's a new format. Adam
- 42:51Speaker 1: Silver is trying to do everything in his power to
- 42:54Speaker 1: make you care about it, including splitting up the teams.
- 42:58Speaker 1: What we're gonna do is, I think we're having a
- 43:00Speaker 1: four team, four separate teams, and then those two teams
- 43:05Speaker 1: will play two teams and then we'll have a final game.
- 43:09Speaker 1: The point is, we had our final selection for All
- 43:12Speaker 1: Stars yesterday on NBON TNT. Now there was a bunch
- 43:18Speaker 1: of guys, first time All Stars, other players. Let's go
- 43:22Speaker 1: through the West. It's gonna be Curry, Shake Gilders, Alexander Lebron, James,
- 43:27Speaker 1: Kevin Durant, Nikola Jokic and then Anthony Edwards got announced yesterday.
- 43:33Speaker 1: James Harden got announced yesterday, Anthony Davis got announced yesterday.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Jalen Jackson Junior got announced yesterday. Sagoon from the Rockets
- 43:41Speaker 1: was announced, Geleen Williams from the Thunder Okay, and let's
- 43:44Speaker 1: hear the lone representative from the Alamo City.
- 43:51Speaker 4: This would be the last one, the last seven picks
- 43:55Speaker 4: by the coaches.
- 43:56Speaker 3: Come on, man, come on, all Star. Oh this is tough.
- 43:59Speaker 6: This is tough, but I'm pulling for one guy.
- 44:03Speaker 4: From the San Antonio Spurs, Victor Webben Yama, another first
- 44:09Speaker 4: time All Star in his second seven twenty four a
- 44:12Speaker 4: night is number sixteen, eleven rebounds is number eight. He
- 44:16Speaker 4: leads the league and blocks with four a game, ten
- 44:19Speaker 4: games of thirty plus three games of forty.
- 44:21Speaker 3: Had fifty against Washington.
- 44:24Speaker 4: He was fourth by the players, fourth by the fans,
- 44:27Speaker 4: second by the media, and the coaches have selected Vic
- 44:31Speaker 4: We'll deserved an NBA All Star.
- 44:35Speaker 1: And that is correct. Victyaw women Yama an All Star
- 44:40Speaker 1: for the first time. Congratulations to him. Now let's go
- 44:44Speaker 1: down the Eastern Conference. Jalen Brunson, Donovan Mitchell, Jason Tatum,
- 44:49Speaker 1: Karl Anthony Towns, Giannis was named and then the ones
- 44:53Speaker 1: named yesterday was Darius Garland from the Cavs. Kate Cunningham
- 44:57Speaker 1: his first time an All Star for the Pistons, Jalen
- 45:00Speaker 1: Round the Finals, MVP, Pascal Siakam, Evan Mobley his first
- 45:05Speaker 1: All Star appearance as well as Damian Lillard and Tyler Hero.
- 45:10Speaker 1: A player not announced, however, was Tray Young. Yes, Trey
- 45:15Speaker 1: Young from the Atlanta Hawks not named an All Star.
- 45:20Speaker 1: People were very upset. Let's hear from the TNT crew
- 45:25Speaker 1: about Young getting snubbed.
- 45:28Speaker 6: I'm a little surprised on the Trey Young thing.
- 45:31Speaker 3: Uh so am I? Yeah, that's right, that's.
- 45:35Speaker 6: I'm a little surprised on that, But I'm not trying
- 45:38Speaker 6: to like, First of all, everybody deserves to make it.
- 45:41Speaker 6: But I'm a little shocked Trey Young didn't make the dog
- 45:44Speaker 6: because he's played. He's played probably in my opinion, his best.
- 45:48Speaker 4: Year twenty three and eleven leaves the league and assists well,
- 45:52Speaker 4: you should stop passing now.
- 45:53Speaker 3: But he.
- 45:55Speaker 8: So.
- 45:56Speaker 1: It would be one thing if Trey Young was on
- 45:59Speaker 1: a team was struggling like the Atlanta Hawks. They're trying
- 46:02Speaker 1: to find their nine seed right now. They're trying to
- 46:04Speaker 1: find their way back in the winning way or winning column.
- 46:07Speaker 1: They lose a very important piece as well. We'll tell
- 46:11Speaker 1: you that about that in a second. But Young, he
- 46:14Speaker 1: currently leads the NBA and assists per game and eleven
- 46:17Speaker 1: and a half. He's got great efficiency from the field,
- 46:22Speaker 1: his team ninth in the East. He's once again left
- 46:24Speaker 1: off the All Star roster, and again people are not
- 46:28Speaker 1: happy about that. Tray Young went online tweeted about it.
- 46:33Speaker 4: Can I throw another name out there that I'm surprised
- 46:36Speaker 4: that we didn't hear Demona Sabonis.
- 46:39Speaker 6: Oh yeah, yeah, so you know, I think they started
- 46:42Speaker 6: so slower.
- 46:42Speaker 3: I mean that might have hurt his chances, but.
- 46:46Speaker 4: He's been he's I mean, look twenty one and for
- 46:49Speaker 4: he leads the league in rebounding, He's second in three
- 46:52Speaker 4: point percentage. He leads the league in double doubles with
- 46:55Speaker 4: forty two. He said, double doubles in forty two out
- 46:58Speaker 4: of the forty four games in a long star right.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the bonus for you. He played forty four
- 47:03Speaker 1: games this season, recorded a double double and forty two
- 47:05Speaker 1: of them, so all but two games. His third straight
- 47:08Speaker 1: year leading the NBA in rebounding. The Kings did take
- 47:12Speaker 1: a step back, and you know, dearon Fox and exactly thrilled. Now,
- 47:16Speaker 1: another name that got left off was LaMelo Ball, who
- 47:20Speaker 1: led the way in fan voting. I'll never understand that
- 47:24Speaker 1: that's one of those get off my lawn takes that
- 47:26Speaker 1: I have. I guess I'm just aging out of the
- 47:28Speaker 1: NBA All Star voting demographic. I've watched LaMelo ball play.
- 47:32Speaker 1: He's an exciting player. He's not a winning player. He's
- 47:35Speaker 1: averaging twenty eight to five and seven this season on
- 47:38Speaker 1: a Hornets team that's going to be in the lottery again.
- 47:42Speaker 1: But look, the kids love him because he was the
- 47:44Speaker 1: number one fan voted player. Norman Powell in his first season,
- 47:49Speaker 1: starting after the removal of After Paul George has left
- 47:53Speaker 1: to go to the seventy six ers, Norman Powell takes
- 47:55Speaker 1: a step up, averages twenty four, three and two, and
- 48:00Speaker 1: this is again his first year as a regular starter.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Clippers are pretty good, even without Paul George and Kawhi
- 48:05Speaker 1: missing a bunch of time. Norman pals somebody. People have
- 48:08Speaker 1: talked about it, and of course Devin Booker. The Suns
- 48:11Speaker 1: are a complete mess, but Booker has played really well
- 48:14Speaker 1: twenty five and a half points, four rebounds, seven assists.
- 48:18Speaker 1: The deal, though, is this, and I've said this for
- 48:21Speaker 1: a while, is it every year we do this? Every
- 48:25Speaker 1: single season. We have the All Star Game announcement, we
- 48:28Speaker 1: go through the parade, we go through the flowers and
- 48:34Speaker 1: the confetti, and we say congratulations all these guys for
- 48:37Speaker 1: making an exhibition game that, let's be honest, nobody really
- 48:40Speaker 1: tries for. And I haven't seen an All Star game
- 48:43Speaker 1: that was hyper competitive since Kobe Bryant retired. The last
- 48:47Speaker 1: one was in Toronto when Kobe was pushing all those
- 48:51Speaker 1: guys to really try to like win the game. I
- 48:54Speaker 1: was in twenty sixteen. So we've almost had a decade
- 48:57Speaker 1: of un character or now characteristically uneventful, unenthused games in
- 49:05Speaker 1: the NBA. But it's an NBA All Star roster and
- 49:10Speaker 1: you can't have everybody on it, because at what point
- 49:14Speaker 1: do we just keep letting guys on, letting guys on,
- 49:16Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden we're complaining about who
- 49:19Speaker 1: getting left off. We're upset that Zach Levine for the
- 49:22Speaker 1: Chicago Bulls didn't have an All Star spot. We're upset
- 49:25Speaker 1: that Jalen Johnson, that's the player who the Atlanta Hawks
- 49:28Speaker 1: will be missing for the rest of the season after
- 49:30Speaker 1: a shoulder injury. Are we upset that he won't make
- 49:33Speaker 1: an All Star Game roster? We start going to the
- 49:36Speaker 1: bottom of the barrel, We start losing kind of the
- 49:39Speaker 1: thread of this whole thing about caring about who makes
- 49:43Speaker 1: the team and who does it these roster spots, Even
- 49:47Speaker 1: for a game that is meaningless, even for a game
- 49:50Speaker 1: that hasn't been very competitive, being an All Star still
- 49:55Speaker 1: means something, if not to the check books of these owners.
- 49:59Speaker 1: And here's what I mean by that. When you take
- 50:01Speaker 1: into account the contracts that some of these players get,
- 50:04Speaker 1: their incentive based a lot of time. To get the Supermax,
- 50:07Speaker 1: you have to hit certain thresholds. You have to be
- 50:09Speaker 1: all NBA, have to win an MVP, Defensive Player of
- 50:12Speaker 1: the Year, go to a finals, win a finals. There's
- 50:15Speaker 1: incentives in these contracts. All Star game incentives exist in
- 50:19Speaker 1: most of the NBA's star contracts. If we're giving out
- 50:25Speaker 1: the roster spots to everybody, if we're expanding the rosters
- 50:29Speaker 1: to forty a piece for the East and the West,
- 50:33Speaker 1: it doesn't really matter anymore. And it starts turning into
- 50:35Speaker 1: what the Pro Bowl has turned into. Did you know
- 50:37Speaker 1: the Pro Bowl had events last night? On Thursday night?
- 50:41Speaker 1: ESPM was trying to get me excited for it. I
- 50:43Speaker 1: don't watch a second. I saw the highlights this morning
- 50:47Speaker 1: of Sam Darnold throwing dots all over the field in
- 50:50Speaker 1: one of the little challenges wondering where was this in
- 50:53Speaker 1: the playoffs? Sam, But the Pro Bowl turned into the
- 50:58Speaker 1: most uncompetitive, unwatchable event in sports. But football is different
- 51:04Speaker 1: because it's a sport that might kill you if you
- 51:07Speaker 1: don't tackle somebody the right way. It's a violent sport.
- 51:10Speaker 1: And for guys who are just playing an exhibition game,
- 51:13Speaker 1: it doesn't make sense to play a violent sport. Basketball
- 51:16Speaker 1: is something that will you pick up and you play
- 51:18Speaker 1: in the backyard, you play it against your five year old. Okay,
- 51:22Speaker 1: it doesn't need to be what it has turned into,
- 51:25Speaker 1: which is guys going up and down the court, lollygagging,
- 51:28Speaker 1: throwing alle loops, half court shots. It's fun for a
- 51:32Speaker 1: little bit, but can I get a little competitiveness. I
- 51:35Speaker 1: really do want to care about the All Star Game,
- 51:38Speaker 1: I really do. But when the number one storyline will
- 51:42Speaker 1: be that Caitlin Clark turned down your invitation to shoot
- 51:46Speaker 1: three pointers, and your second storyline will be that Trey
- 51:49Speaker 1: Young got quote snubbed from the All Star Game, your
- 51:52Speaker 1: All Star Game stinks. That's the problem at this point
- 51:55Speaker 1: for the NBA. You got to find a way to
- 51:57Speaker 1: make this more competitive, and it doesn't have to come.
- 52:00Speaker 1: I'm paying the guys more money. It doesn't have to
- 52:02Speaker 1: be that way. Adam Silver could tell these guys, you're
- 52:05Speaker 1: making our product look bad here, guys, being as uncompetitive
- 52:09Speaker 1: as this game is, why don't we just cancel it
- 52:12Speaker 1: instead of having you guys go up and down the
- 52:14Speaker 1: court doing whatever you want to do. All right, that's enough.
- 52:17Speaker 1: When we come back, arch Manning opens up as the
- 52:19Speaker 1: Heisman favorite this season to go into twenty twenty five.
- 52:24Speaker 1: I'm going to explain why that should excite you as
- 52:27Speaker 1: a Texas fan, and you shouldn't pay attention to it
- 52:30Speaker 1: if you're a gambler. Next Under The Craig Way Show,
- 52:33Speaker 1: Andrew Zimbol fillion for Craig on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 52:35Speaker 1: hundred The Zone. Andrew Zimbol filling in for Craig Way
- 52:38Speaker 1: on a free for all Friday. That is right. Got
- 52:43Speaker 1: a lot going on in hour number three of the program,
- 52:46Speaker 1: including Lea Van from The Chronicle coming on to the
- 52:50Speaker 1: Koran out of Houston to talk to us about baseball
- 52:55Speaker 1: pictures and catchers getting close to report Alex Fregman could
- 52:58Speaker 1: he be leaving each town? Also her thoughts on the
- 53:02Speaker 1: Dodgers deferring more money than God. Yeah, if the Yankees
- 53:07Speaker 1: can't keep up with you, I don't know what is
- 53:09Speaker 1: going to happen to that sport. Also, Vic Shaeffer, the
- 53:13Speaker 1: head coach of Texas women's basketball, speaks after a win yesterday,
- 53:17Speaker 1: a seventy sixty one win over Missouri. Head coach Schaeffer
- 53:21Speaker 1: gives us an idea of what's going around or going
- 53:23Speaker 1: through his mind as we get into the final or
- 53:28Speaker 1: I should say the final month of regular season in
- 53:29Speaker 1: February and a game on Sunday against Texas A and
- 53:35Speaker 1: M as well as let's start here, let's talk about
- 53:40Speaker 1: the UT women's basketball team. A win yesterday against Missouri.
- 53:43Speaker 1: Seventy sixty one was the final score, and it wasn't
- 53:47Speaker 1: easy to get it done. It came down to a
- 53:52Speaker 1: good stretch in the second half for the Texas women's team.
- 53:59Speaker 1: This is a team that had a lot going on.
- 54:03Speaker 1: It was a tough time. They've had a lot going
- 54:06Speaker 1: on when it comes to the injury and sickness bug.
- 54:11Speaker 1: So Texas started the game, forcing two Missouri turnovers in
- 54:14Speaker 1: the opening two minutes. Then Taylor Jones connected with a
- 54:18Speaker 1: pair of free throws to finish trailing by seven after
- 54:21Speaker 1: one quarter, twenty to thirteen, and they scored nine points
- 54:25Speaker 1: in the first Jones opened the second quarter of the
- 54:27Speaker 1: layup with a three pointer from Lee. Texas went on
- 54:30Speaker 1: a ten oh run to finish the half trailing by two,
- 54:34Speaker 1: thirty five to thirty three. This is when things get exciting.
- 54:39Speaker 1: The long Horns came back in the to start the
- 54:41Speaker 1: half with seven points, and this big shot from Booker
- 54:45Speaker 1: was a shot to take the lead. This is way one.
- 54:49Speaker 2: Harman got a bath drives had underneath, it goes out.
- 54:52Speaker 2: The Booker fires up a three. There you go, knocks
- 54:58Speaker 2: it down. The lowboards out their first thirty eight thirty.
- 55:02Speaker 1: Five, and you can hear Craig wait to call on
- 55:04Speaker 1: one of three to one yesterday take the lead in
- 55:08Speaker 1: the third quarter, forced three straight turnovers. Hell Missouri to
- 55:13Speaker 1: over a two minute scoring drought into the third leading
- 55:16Speaker 1: fifty two to forty five, but grew up in the
- 55:19Speaker 1: final quarter with a jumper to lead sixty two to
- 55:22Speaker 1: fifty seven. Shea Holly drained to three to go up eight,
- 55:25Speaker 1: and then the rest is history. Texas moves on now
- 55:28Speaker 1: to take on Texas A and M in College Station
- 55:32Speaker 1: on Sunday five pm. Tip The long Horns approved to
- 55:36Speaker 1: twenty one to two on the season, seven to one
- 55:38Speaker 1: in SEC play. They've only lost to South Carolina and
- 55:41Speaker 1: they have a rematch against the game Cocks later in February.
- 55:45Speaker 1: Super Bowl Sunday. Mark your calendars. Long Horns have won
- 55:48Speaker 1: their fifth straight. They're eleven to zero in the Movie
- 55:50Speaker 1: Center this season and fifty or forty three and five
- 55:54Speaker 1: in their home arena. This is the fifth straight game
- 55:57Speaker 1: for Taylor Jones to have a double figures in her
- 56:00Speaker 1: fifteenth game of the season, and Madison Booker reached double
- 56:03Speaker 1: digits for the seventeenth time this season, which is where
- 56:05Speaker 1: we're going to pivot and talk about Madison Booker. So
- 56:09Speaker 1: she was on a Good Game with Sarah Spain podcast
- 56:12Speaker 1: with her head coach Vick Schaeffer earlier this week. Now
- 56:16Speaker 1: you've probably heard the promos for Sarah Spain's podcast, the
- 56:20Speaker 1: former ESPN R coming to iHeart to do a women's
- 56:24Speaker 1: sports podcast, and if you haven't checked it out, it's
- 56:27Speaker 1: on the free iHeartRadio app. Then you would improved. Make
- 56:29Speaker 1: sure you use a preset set the zone as one
- 56:32Speaker 1: of your presets so you can follow ut athletics throughout
- 56:36Speaker 1: the season. But the podcast is over there. Check it out.
- 56:40Speaker 1: This is the clip talking to Madison Booker and Vic
- 56:43Speaker 1: Schaeffer about Booker deciding to join the Texas Longhorns.
- 56:48Speaker 9: What was it about coach that made you know you
- 56:50Speaker 9: wanted to play for him wherever he was?
- 56:52Speaker 10: He knows how to win, he knows how to win.
- 56:54Speaker 10: He's passionate. I guess say it is a lie.
- 56:57Speaker 1: He's a great guy.
- 56:57Speaker 5: Man, He's a great guy.
- 56:59Speaker 10: But yeah, just watching him, just players he had in
- 57:02Speaker 10: the past and how he developed them players, and I mean,
- 57:06Speaker 10: I just love watching him win and be staying And
- 57:08Speaker 10: I thought, you know, I could, you know, win a
- 57:10Speaker 10: lot of games.
- 57:10Speaker 1: Under him too, So I mean, why not. So I'm
- 57:14Speaker 1: gonna take loon Horn now.
- 57:16Speaker 5: Yeah, Coach, that's gotta feel really good. Huh oh man,
- 57:20Speaker 5: it's uh.
- 57:21Speaker 1: You're grinning over there.
- 57:22Speaker 7: I am, you know, But again, it's it's, you know,
- 57:27Speaker 7: the confidence that I have in her, Probably as confident
- 57:32Speaker 7: as any kid I've ever had. But it's because I
- 57:37Speaker 7: see the work that she puts in. And when nobody's around,
- 57:40Speaker 7: you know, my office is here, I overlooked the practice gym.
- 57:44Speaker 7: She's in the gym a lot with Shaeffer, Junior, our assistant.
- 57:51Speaker 5: But I mean, I told her the other.
- 57:53Speaker 7: Night, I don't care if she's made five in a
- 57:55Speaker 7: row or missed five in a row. I'm coming to
- 57:58Speaker 7: her one hundred out of a hundred times. And again
- 58:04Speaker 7: just knowing, knowing that she's invested in the time that
- 58:08Speaker 7: she spent, the confidence that I have in her, and
- 58:12Speaker 7: then you see.
- 58:14Speaker 5: She's a great kid. Like she's she's such a great kid.
- 58:19Speaker 7: Parents, wonderful parents have done a great job with her,
- 58:23Speaker 7: great family. You know, when you go in there and
- 58:26Speaker 7: recruit her, you're not only doing you know, having to
- 58:29Speaker 7: talk to mom and dad. You got Auntie in there,
- 58:31Speaker 7: you got Granny in there. I mean, and you know,
- 58:36Speaker 7: for me, man, I don't want to let any of
- 58:38Speaker 7: those people down. But just knowing and now that we've
- 58:43Speaker 7: been together the time that we have, she's still got
- 58:48Speaker 7: you know, knowing, she's going to be that much better
- 58:50Speaker 7: and she's going to get there because of her work.
- 58:53Speaker 1: Ethic Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone that was
- 58:57Speaker 1: from the Good Game podcast with Sarah Spain, the Madison
- 59:00Speaker 1: Booker and head coach Vick Schaefer. You can listen to
- 59:03Speaker 1: that podcast on the Free iHeartRadio app. We'll hear more
- 59:06Speaker 1: from head coach Vick Schaeffer later in the hour, But
- 59:10Speaker 1: let's talk NBA All Stars because the San Antonio Spurs
- 59:14Speaker 1: have one. This is what it sounded last night on
- 59:17Speaker 1: the NBA on TNT.
- 59:24Speaker 4: This would be the last one, the last of seven
- 59:28Speaker 4: picks by the coaches.
- 59:29Speaker 6: Come on, man, come on, all Star. Oh this is tough,
- 59:32Speaker 6: This is tough, but I'm pulling.
- 59:33Speaker 4: For one guy from the San Antonio Spurs, Victor wembn Yama,
- 59:41Speaker 4: another first time All Star in his second semasion. Twenty
- 59:45Speaker 4: four a night is number sixteen, eleven rebounds is number eight.
- 59:49Speaker 4: He leads the league in blocks with four a game,
- 59:52Speaker 4: ten games of thirty plus three games of forty had
- 59:55Speaker 4: fifty against Washington. He was fourth by the players, fourth
- 59:59Speaker 4: by the fans, second by the media, and the coaches
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: have selected Vic.
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: We'll deserve an NBA All start.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: So of the NBA All Stars, the one that caught
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: the most attention for not making the team was Trey Young.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Trey Young averaging twenty two and a half three rebounds
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: and a season high a player high eleven and a
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: half assist. So he misses the All Star Game fourth
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: time in his seventh year a seven year career. So far,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: the Atlanta Hawks twenty two to twenty five, ninth in
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: the East Side. Note huge for the Spurs have Wimby
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: named as an NBA All Star. Also, Spurs fans have
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: been keeping a very very close eye on the Atlanta
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Hawks as they hold their unprotected first round pick. So
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: I imagine that Spurs fans were like, well, Trey Young did
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: make the All Star Game, They're out an impactful player
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: in Jalen Johnson. Hmm. This could be a very interesting
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: last couple of months of the NBA regular season, and
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: depending on where the Hawks end up, Spurs might end
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: up with a pretty high lottery pick as well. But
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: Shaquille O'Neal had thoughts. He was asked the question, should
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: Trey Young be disappointed in not making the NBA All
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Star Game?
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: Should Trey be disappointed?
- 1:01:24Speaker 11: He should be mad, He should be upset because he
- 1:01:27Speaker 11: said it like I was supposed to be said, twenty
- 1:01:29Speaker 11: four best players in the league, and he is one
- 1:01:31Speaker 11: of the twenty four best players in the league. I
- 1:01:34Speaker 11: think the system is flawed, Like we need a letter
- 1:01:38Speaker 11: of the law definition of what an All Star was
- 1:01:41Speaker 11: supposed to be.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: What's how that you.
- 1:01:43Speaker 11: Tell me a guy that can flat out play put
- 1:01:46Speaker 11: up points, you know, winning or losing it. They're not
- 1:01:48Speaker 11: winning there and nice and if you know, we don't
- 1:01:50Speaker 11: playoffs starts today they would be in a play and
- 1:01:52Speaker 11: so that's not really losing. So but yeah, when when
- 1:01:55Speaker 11: you talk about the twenty four best players in league,
- 1:01:57Speaker 11: it's a guy that you know can put up serious
- 1:01:59Speaker 11: numbers and the guy I can play.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: So first off, hilarious. There needs to be a letter
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: of the law. There needs to be a line in
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: the stand. There needs to be a standard for NBA
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: All Star. Okay, well what is the line? What does
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: it matter? Well, it's just somebody that can play. It's like, okay,
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: cool co cool, so kind of up for interpretation like
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: being an All Star. So the way I look at
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: it as is this, the Atlanta Hawks aren't winning enough games,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: and Trey Young, while being a very impressive scorer and
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: doing a very good job of turn or assisting the team,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: isn't winning. And when you think about all of the
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: great players on bad teams who have for years, we're
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: talking decades of NBA history, haven't made All Star Games
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: because their team wasn't winning. Yeah, that's kind of an
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: important part. Winning the game is the most important part.
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: The other part I have said is that if everybody
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: gets in, it's no longer an All Star game. It's
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: just a it's an exhibition, so everybody can join up.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: And maybe that's what they do. Maybe that's what the
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: NBA does. As the NBA All Star Game continues to
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: get worse and worse ratings as fewer and fewer people
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: want to sit and watch guys run up and down
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: the court, throwing up half court shots and alley oops
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: and playing a zero defense or less defense than they
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: might on a normal Saturday night game. When we get
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: to this point where they just want to invite everybody,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: just do that. Have a free for all at an
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: open park, or have a free for all wherever they
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: want to have the All Star Game, preferably in a
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: warmer destination. I know they had it in Milwaukee a
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: couple of years ago, and I had some friends who
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: went there. They were not thrilled, how cold it was.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: Just have a free for all, let them all show up.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: Whoever wants to play play. We picked teams and we
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: just run open court. I mean that, honestly, probably would
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: be more competitive. I would argue that the open court
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: runs between NBA players and college players and AAU players
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: are more competitive during the summer months. Then the NBA
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: All Star Game is in the middle of the middle
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: of the season. Another player left off Sabonis forty four
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: games this season, forty two of them with a double double.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: The Kings cannot catch a break the Aaron Fox. The
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: trade is still very much up in the air. We
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: will see how that ends up. According to Spurs reporters,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: we are on the cusp of a fourteen deal between
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: the Spurs, the Kings and two other unknown teams. Will
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: see how that pans out. We hope that it gets
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: done before our show ends because I would love to
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: talk about it. But next up, it's Lea Van from
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: the Kronon coming on to talk about baseball and never
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: too early to talk baseball on the Zone next on
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred, The Zone siding for the
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: Hall of Famer andrews Zill on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: The Zone got a lot to get into. We were
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: eight days away from pitchers and catchers reporting and on
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: the phone line with us right now is Leah Van
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: from crime dot Com to talk to us about it.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: How excited are you for a baseball season.
- 1:05:09Speaker 12: I'm very excited. I'm pretty much ready to go booked
- 1:05:13Speaker 12: my spring training trip. And yeah, especially since football's kind
- 1:05:18Speaker 12: of been I guess we've got the super Bowl, but
- 1:05:20Speaker 12: it's been kind of over for like a Texans you.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: Know, for a while, exactly exactly, so I want to
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: start here Alex Bragman clearly the biggest story coming out
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: of Houston right now. Where are we right now with
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: the Bragman and Astro talk?
- 1:05:36Speaker 9: I mean, where aren't we?
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: Like?
- 1:05:37Speaker 12: I mean, it's just one of those things where it
- 1:05:41Speaker 12: depends on what minute of the day that we're in.
- 1:05:45Speaker 12: But basically the Astros you know, are going to stick
- 1:05:49Speaker 12: to their offer of six years and one hundred and
- 1:05:51Speaker 12: to million, and he wants two hundred million because you know,
- 1:05:56Speaker 12: the offer on the table is kind of in a
- 1:06:00Speaker 12: way of pay cuts by comparison. Previous contract was backwarded,
- 1:06:06Speaker 12: so he was very twenty eight point five million per
- 1:06:09Speaker 12: year at the end of that contract, even though it's
- 1:06:12Speaker 12: the whole entire thing worked out to be about twenty
- 1:06:16Speaker 12: million a year and this new contract would average you know,
- 1:06:20Speaker 12: twenty six million a year, so it's not actually a
- 1:06:23Speaker 12: pay cut. Obviously, that would make him the highest paint
- 1:06:27Speaker 12: surfacement because Matt schampan find a sixty year, one hundred
- 1:06:31Speaker 12: and fifty one million dollars deal you know, last season.
- 1:06:34Speaker 12: But yeah, apparently the Red Sox and adj and uh,
- 1:06:40Speaker 12: the Tigers have all kind of been making their pitches
- 1:06:45Speaker 12: to him, and so far as the word is like,
- 1:06:50Speaker 12: oh he hasn't, there isn't an organization that's really offered
- 1:06:54Speaker 12: that he says high on his lips. So yeah, I
- 1:06:58Speaker 12: don't know. It's it's one of those changer. It's just
- 1:07:01Speaker 12: absolutely ever changing. And I don't know, I don't think
- 1:07:06Speaker 12: he'll be a Houston Astro. But if that is the case,
- 1:07:10Speaker 12: the Astros need to go to like sign an outfield
- 1:07:12Speaker 12: or something, you know.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: So that's where I was going to go with this, because,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: like I said, we're eight days away from pictures and
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: catchers coming and starting the twenty twenty five season. Do
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: the Astros have a backup plan? There has to be
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: something in the works if they can't get their all
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: star third baseman to resign.
- 1:07:31Speaker 9: Yeah, you would think and you know, I think I
- 1:07:35Speaker 9: feel like the clock is ticking and all the other
- 1:07:38Speaker 9: you know, all the other deals are kind of wrapping
- 1:07:42Speaker 9: up at this point in time. So I feel like,
- 1:07:43Speaker 9: you know, we're all just in a waiting pattern. And
- 1:07:48Speaker 9: the assuals do have a couple of prospects that have
- 1:07:51Speaker 9: some playing experience from last year just as a product
- 1:07:53Speaker 9: of injuries and stuff like that. You still have guys
- 1:07:56Speaker 9: in the outfield like Chads McCormick and Gosh and you know,
- 1:08:02Speaker 9: Jake Myers, a returning Jordan, but like Chaz didn't have
- 1:08:06Speaker 9: a good season last year. And then you've got some
- 1:08:09Speaker 9: prospects like Jacob Melton, peder Leone. But it would be
- 1:08:15Speaker 9: nice if they had somebody who was a little bit
- 1:08:17Speaker 9: more of a veteran status and a little bit more
- 1:08:19Speaker 9: of a big name to kind of replace a potential
- 1:08:22Speaker 9: loss in Bregman.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: And it sounds like Bregman wants to stay in Houston
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: or am I just reading every social media post now
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: on x that it sounds like he wants to be
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: in Houston and they just cannot find a way to
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: get a deal.
- 1:08:37Speaker 9: Yeah, I think that would be his preference obviously. I mean,
- 1:08:39Speaker 9: these are his guys, and this is where he's been
- 1:08:42Speaker 9: for ever, for his entire career. But I think he
- 1:08:46Speaker 9: also wants to get paid, and I you know, I
- 1:08:49Speaker 9: think that he has the right to, you know, want that.
- 1:08:53Speaker 9: It's just you know how the Astros are. And even
- 1:08:56Speaker 9: Jim Crane I like tucked him say, and he's like,
- 1:08:58Speaker 9: I'm not gonna hey a ton of I'm not gonna
- 1:09:02Speaker 9: do something that's not good business, you know, And so
- 1:09:06Speaker 9: we'll see what happens. I don't know. It kind of
- 1:09:08Speaker 9: just just depends. I mean I could get off the
- 1:09:10Speaker 9: phone call and he can sign.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: That's and you know what a lot of that has
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: happened to me recently, where guys just decide to sign
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: contracts right when the show ends. I want to start.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: You talked about the money and the Astros are not
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: one of the heavy spenders this offseason, but the La
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: Dodgers are. They have deferred more money. They've outspent everybody.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: And hal Steinbrenner actually brought up that the Yankees cannot
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: compete with how much they're spending. From your point of view,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: from somebody the covers of the game day to day,
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: is this bad for the sport? With what the Dodgers
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: have done.
- 1:09:48Speaker 9: I mean, I don't think it's really that. I mean,
- 1:09:52Speaker 9: I guess it's weird, but no, I don't think it is.
- 1:09:56Speaker 9: I think it's what keeps baseball on people's mind, people talking.
- 1:10:01Speaker 9: And you know, every league that has experienced like ups
- 1:10:05Speaker 9: and downs like those up years is you have a villain, right,
- 1:10:08Speaker 9: Like having a villain to chase is so good for branding.
- 1:10:12Speaker 9: And yeah, the old hags are like, oh, well, if
- 1:10:15Speaker 9: they're gonna pay this much money, I'm not gonna watch
- 1:10:18Speaker 9: baseball anymore. And it's the same guys who don't want
- 1:10:20Speaker 9: college players to be paid. And guess what, people are
- 1:10:24Speaker 9: watching college football. It does not matter. The spending does
- 1:10:27Speaker 9: not matter that much to fans. If people like think
- 1:10:30Speaker 9: that it does, it just it's like it's ridiculous. Yes,
- 1:10:34Speaker 9: But at the same time, they have all these big names,
- 1:10:38Speaker 9: and you know, the moment they lose like a three
- 1:10:41Speaker 9: game series, like everybody's gonna go bonker, you know, and
- 1:10:46Speaker 9: the moment that one of them gets hurt or something
- 1:10:49Speaker 9: like that, again, that's it's gonna break news. So as
- 1:10:53Speaker 9: far as it being bad for the sport, I think
- 1:10:55Speaker 9: it just adds more fire and spice amongst executives and
- 1:11:01Speaker 9: amongst teams. I don't think fans really care about the spending,
- 1:11:06Speaker 9: and I guess it's annoying to see that many stars
- 1:11:09Speaker 9: on one team. And we thought the same thing about
- 1:11:11Speaker 9: like the Golden State Warriors years back, and we thought
- 1:11:13Speaker 9: the same thing about the Miami Heat. We thought the
- 1:11:15Speaker 9: same thing about the Cavs. You know, like every majorly
- 1:11:19Speaker 9: successful sports franchise who has spent an exorbitant amount of
- 1:11:23Speaker 9: money has been annoying for everybody, right, but having that
- 1:11:27Speaker 9: villain is so good because it gives everybody something to chase.
- 1:11:32Speaker 9: Everybody loves to hate in sports. That is our favorite pathtime.
- 1:11:36Speaker 9: Do you give us any reason to hate somebody, or
- 1:11:38Speaker 9: hate a team, or hate an organization. We're all locked in.
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: I love that, and I've said that for a long
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: time that you know, you can love your team, but
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: you'll hate watch We'll bring you to the couch. Lea
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: vanfromcron dot com talking to us about baseball his pitchers
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: and catchers report in about a week from today. What
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: other stories have been working on and where can we
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: find him?
- 1:12:00Speaker 9: Leah, Yeah, I mean I've got a couple of things
- 1:12:04Speaker 9: in the works. I know I'm talking on Austin radio station.
- 1:12:08Speaker 9: You know, I'm at Texas alum. But I have two
- 1:12:10Speaker 9: texting and in baseball stories right now. And then I'm
- 1:12:12Speaker 9: working on doing a lot of interviews about head coach
- 1:12:15Speaker 9: Michael Early and kind of his come up story. And
- 1:12:18Speaker 9: then they're starting pitcher Ryan Prager why he turned down
- 1:12:22Speaker 9: like nine thousand dollars third rounds or second round selection
- 1:12:25Speaker 9: with the Angels to come back and play for A
- 1:12:27Speaker 9: and M. And then I'm working on a story actually
- 1:12:29Speaker 9: about Jim Crane and his background and playing college baseball
- 1:12:32Speaker 9: at the D two level and how that has shaped
- 1:12:35Speaker 9: his career as an executive. And Bash was also added
- 1:12:39Speaker 9: a new strength coach, Stephanie Grubbs this offseason, and so
- 1:12:42Speaker 9: I'm profiling her as well, and you can all, yeah,
- 1:12:45Speaker 9: you can find it all on cron dot com in
- 1:12:47Speaker 9: the coming.
- 1:12:47Speaker 8: Weeks and months.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: It's my favorite. And I'll tell you what, Leah, reading
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: your tweets and reading your stories about college baseball. College
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: baseball is great. You take it to another level the
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: excitement and the love for the sport. Appreciate that, well,
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: thank you.
- 1:13:02Speaker 9: I mean, I think it's fun, it's quirky, and it's
- 1:13:05Speaker 9: something that is that I think more people should pay
- 1:13:08Speaker 9: attention to.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: Lea Van from Cron dot com. Thank you so much
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: for hanging out with us on The Craigway Show.
- 1:13:14Speaker 9: Yeah you too, Thanks for having me.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: More coming up in a bit, including Vic Shafe for
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: the head coach of the Texas women's basketball team. He
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: had media availability earlier today, previewed the upcoming game against
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: Texas A and M on Sunday, as well as spoke
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: about his time building programs at Sam Houston State and
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: what does it mean to have Sidney Carter on your
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: coaching staff. He gets into all of that. We'll bring
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: to you next on The Craigway Show. Andrew Zim will
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: fill you in for Craig on a free for all
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: Friday on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Andrew
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: Zimble as we continue to roll along an hour number
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: three of The Craigway Show. If you missed any of
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: the show, make sure you go back and listen to
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: the podcast version of it. We do a pretty good
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: job of cutting him up and posting them for you
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: for your listening pleasure. Lea Van from the Kron dot
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: Com giving us an idea of what is coming up
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: for the Houston Astros this season. I talked about it
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: a little bit earlier this week about Max Schurzer, forty
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: one years old, gonna sign a one year deal with
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: the Toronto Blue Jays fifteen and a half million dollars,
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: and then Justin Erlinder signed out west with the Giants
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: as well, So a lot of those older pitchers trying
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: to get that last contract. Alex Bregman still not signed yet,
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: thirty years old, looking for a long term deal to
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: get him into his late thirties imaginable, So we'll see
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: if he resigns with the astroser ends up going somewhere else.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: Red Sox are a favorite as well. So ESPN's women's
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: basketball bracketology currently has the three one seeds if the
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: tournament started today, being UCLA, South Carolina, Notre Dame, and
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: USC and UT would be a two seaton of course,
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: the host of that Austin region. We will see how
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: that turns out. They have a big schedule coming up
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: down the stretch for UT, including a game this Sunday
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: against Texas A and M and then games against South Carolina, LSU,
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: Kentucky to going into the month of February. But let's
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: talk about that road to an SEC title. In year
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: one in the SEC, Vick Schaeffer spoke to the media
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: day and was asked, do you see a road map
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: for an SEC title?
- 1:15:45Speaker 7: I don't see any map, but the one that goes
- 1:15:47Speaker 7: to College Station's that's the only map, and I'm real
- 1:15:52Speaker 7: familiar with that road.
- 1:15:54Speaker 5: So that's the only thing I'm focused on.
- 1:15:58Speaker 7: You know, again, when you start looking at you know,
- 1:16:02Speaker 7: when you're climbing that mountain and you're halfway up and
- 1:16:05Speaker 7: you start looking at the top, that's when you miss
- 1:16:07Speaker 7: a step and you fall down and then you got
- 1:16:10Speaker 7: to start back all over again.
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: So I'm just focused on one day at a time.
- 1:16:14Speaker 7: I'm trying to I'm agonizing this morning, sitting here, trying
- 1:16:17Speaker 7: to figure out how what to do and how to
- 1:16:19Speaker 7: do it today with this team, knowing you know, where
- 1:16:23Speaker 7: we are right now in the in the process of
- 1:16:27Speaker 7: having nine players, and hopefully I hadn't lost any more
- 1:16:30Speaker 7: between now this morning at eight am, when I are
- 1:16:33Speaker 7: eight forty five, when I turned them loose to go
- 1:16:35Speaker 7: to class, and when I get them back at one thirty.
- 1:16:38Speaker 7: But I think it's it's kind of a fluid situation,
- 1:16:41Speaker 7: and so yeah, I'm just I'm really really intentional about
- 1:16:48Speaker 7: the next game.
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: And that's it.
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: That's big Schaeffer talking about the roadmap to the SEC title,
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: focusing on one game at a time, and Craig Way
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: has brought it up a couple times this week that
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: Schieffer and most of the coaches at the University of Texas,
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: they're not so much coaching against the opponent in front
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: of them, but the ghost of hey, making sure you
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: don't let down this fan base. This is high expectations,
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: a very high bar set. But Schaeffer was asked, do
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: you ever stop and think about where this team is
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: going or what to do when it comes to the
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: NCAA tournament.
- 1:17:29Speaker 7: You know, after we beat Maryland, I told them, hey,
- 1:17:31Speaker 7: that's a that's a win that's going to really help
- 1:17:34Speaker 7: you when it comes in SAA tournament time. It'll help
- 1:17:36Speaker 7: you with with how they view us and seeding and
- 1:17:39Speaker 7: things like that. I mean, our non conference record, not
- 1:17:42Speaker 7: to mention our our net all that is really good.
- 1:17:46Speaker 7: Those kids, you know, embraced the grind and embrace being
- 1:17:49Speaker 7: on the road. You know, I told them how proud
- 1:17:51Speaker 7: I was of them and and and all that. But
- 1:17:55Speaker 7: you know, when when I was building a program at State,
- 1:18:00Speaker 7: I remember that second year we only had fourteen teams
- 1:18:05Speaker 7: in the league, and I put the top seven on
- 1:18:07Speaker 7: one side and the next seven on the other side,
- 1:18:09Speaker 7: and I said, hey, I want to finish number one
- 1:18:13Speaker 7: on this side, and let's see how many we can
- 1:18:16Speaker 7: get on this side. And so when you're building a
- 1:18:19Speaker 7: prey gives those kids something to shoot for, you know,
- 1:18:23Speaker 7: because we were building a program, I mean, we were trying.
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: To build a.
- 1:18:29Speaker 7: Way of life, a way of doing things, and so
- 1:18:32Speaker 7: it gave them an idea, Okay, these seven over here,
- 1:18:36Speaker 7: we want to go six and oh or seven and
- 1:18:38Speaker 7: oh and these over here. Now we need to do
- 1:18:41Speaker 7: the best we can over here. But this group right here,
- 1:18:44Speaker 7: we got to catch disc.
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: Group before we can catch disc group. That makes sense.
- 1:18:49Speaker 7: That's not where we are now here at Texas. So
- 1:18:52Speaker 7: I don't really get ahead of myself.
- 1:18:53Speaker 5: I don't really.
- 1:18:54Speaker 7: Talk about my kids are really smart. I think that
- 1:18:58Speaker 7: was again. You can tell them how good you think
- 1:19:01Speaker 7: somebody is, or how good some coach is, or all that.
- 1:19:06Speaker 5: They're going to make up their own mind based off
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: of what.
- 1:19:11Speaker 7: They'll make up their own mind about how good they
- 1:19:13Speaker 7: think somebody is based off of record or who they
- 1:19:17Speaker 7: know on the team or all that. So I just
- 1:19:21Speaker 7: try to put my head down, man, head down, rear,
- 1:19:25Speaker 7: end up, low ahead.
- 1:19:27Speaker 5: That's just the only way I know how to do it.
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. I love that
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: story about the Sam Houston State putting the all the
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: teams in the conference essentially listed and saying like, Okay, hey,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: our goal is not to set the bar like all
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: we're trying to win the conference in year one. Our
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: goal is to beat that half the lower half of
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: the conference, make that the stepping stone, and then work
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: our way up. I love that story, and I think
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: a lot more coaches should do things like that instead
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: of trying to take a bite larger than you can chew. Uh.
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: What challenge is now? Though? Does Texas A and M
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: present as that's the game next up on that road
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: map for an eventual SEC title for UT fans Texas
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: A and M this Sunday, five pm. What are some
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: of those challenges?
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: Coach?
- 1:20:18Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean they got good players, you know, Lauren
- 1:20:21Speaker 7: being one of them.
- 1:20:23Speaker 5: You know, I really hate it.
- 1:20:25Speaker 7: Uh for Kulabali and so last year, and and it's
- 1:20:30Speaker 7: just a terrible, terrible thing for her and the team.
- 1:20:35Speaker 5: But I still look at their roster. I watched their
- 1:20:37Speaker 5: game last night.
- 1:20:38Speaker 7: I've watched the L s U game and and some others,
- 1:20:42Speaker 7: like they got really good personnel and and uh so
- 1:20:47Speaker 7: their athleticism, you know, uh, malone's much improved. To me,
- 1:20:54Speaker 7: she is physical, you know, and and obviously we've we've
- 1:20:58Speaker 7: got some good gigs down there to go with that.
- 1:21:01Speaker 7: So you know, they've got size, They've got several big,
- 1:21:05Speaker 7: big kids in long.
- 1:21:07Speaker 5: And length, and so you know that concerns me.
- 1:21:10Speaker 7: Their their ability to out on the perimeter with those guards.
- 1:21:15Speaker 7: There's a lot about that team that concerns me. So
- 1:21:19Speaker 7: you know we're gonna have to again, Well, it's a
- 1:21:21Speaker 7: home game for them. They've obviously played well and at
- 1:21:25Speaker 7: home beaten. You know, I had a good run there
- 1:21:27Speaker 7: with Georgia and Kentucky again Kentucky being a top fifteen
- 1:21:31Speaker 7: team when they beat them. So our kids are fully
- 1:21:35Speaker 7: aware of how good A and M is and how
- 1:21:37Speaker 7: good we're gonna.
- 1:21:38Speaker 5: Have to play on Sunday.
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: Now, let's jump ahead, Ronald, Let's go to cut number nine.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: Cod number nine Now, this is a big game for
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: the University of Texas, and clearly it's a big game
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: for Texas A and M when you consider the rivalry
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: at hand Texas Texas A and M a civil war
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: in the state. When you pick a side, you die
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: by that side. How do you prepare the younger players
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: on this team, players who may not have ever played
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: Texas A and M before. This is the first year
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: the two teams share a conference since they were Big
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: Twelve partners a while like ten years ago, twelve years ago. Now,
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: how do you prepare the younger players for this rivalry? Coach?
- 1:22:16Speaker 7: Let's be honest, the true rivalry was back in the
- 1:22:21Speaker 7: Southwest Conference days and then.
- 1:22:26Speaker 5: A little bit bleeding into the Big Twelve.
- 1:22:29Speaker 7: Well, my kids weren't even born, so it's really hard.
- 1:22:34Speaker 7: And we experienced that even at when I was at
- 1:22:38Speaker 7: A and M playing Texas back in those times. Now,
- 1:22:41Speaker 7: me and Shay Holly, we grew up in it. We
- 1:22:45Speaker 7: understand it completely. But to try to convey that to nowadays,
- 1:22:51Speaker 7: to today's kid, you know, it's probably a little more challenging.
- 1:22:59Speaker 7: And you know that can be good and bad. You know,
- 1:23:03Speaker 7: you certainly don't want to get two worked up about
- 1:23:04Speaker 7: a game too emotional. You want to play with emotion,
- 1:23:08Speaker 7: but you don't want to be emotional and so and
- 1:23:13Speaker 7: at the same time keeping that level head about Hey,
- 1:23:16Speaker 7: next one up, who is a coach? Who we playing?
- 1:23:19Speaker 7: Where are we playing? What times the bus loading and
- 1:23:21Speaker 7: where from? And that's not a bad approach. So I
- 1:23:26Speaker 7: think that's you know, that's where we're at in today's
- 1:23:28Speaker 7: world with today's kids.
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: And but again, probably two people that.
- 1:23:34Speaker 7: Do understand it is myself and and Shay Holly growing
- 1:23:39Speaker 7: up in a house with her father Eric, who played
- 1:23:43Speaker 7: obviously played football here and was.
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: Involved in it sports radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: And another one would be Sidney Carter as well, who
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: played at the Texas A and M before now becoming
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: an assistant coach in director of player personnel for the Longhorns.
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: All right, we'll take quick break, wrap up our three
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: of The Craigway Show and send you into the weekend.
