- 1:42Speaker 1: party after the party, the bridge to get you from
- 1:44Speaker 1: one full episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard
- 1:47Speaker 1: to dig into the dirt. On this bonus episode, we
- 1:50Speaker 1: are talking about this week's brand new full episode on
- 1:53Speaker 1: jose Canseco, the sources that we used which helped us
- 1:56Speaker 1: uncover many wild stories that we weren't able to fit
- 2:00Speaker 1: the actual episode. We're talking about Doc Ellis is no hitter.
- 2:03Speaker 1: We're talking about athletes that could have been rock stars,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and of course we've got your voicemails and texts and
- 2:09Speaker 1: as always, a whole lot of rosy. All right, just goes,
- 2:13Speaker 1: let's get into it. Jose Canseco was more like a
- 2:29Speaker 1: superhero cartoon character to me growing up that he was
- 2:32Speaker 1: a baseball player. We didn't know it then, but we
- 2:35Speaker 1: know now that he was the avatar for steroid abuse
- 2:39Speaker 1: in the MLB, and that, of course is mightily disgraceful,
- 2:44Speaker 1: but selfishly speaking from where I sit now. From here,
- 2:49Speaker 1: Jose Cantaco's antics, which we detail in this week's full
- 2:51Speaker 1: episode of Disgrace and gave us one of the greatest
- 2:54Speaker 1: characters in sports history. So for that, I'm thankful. I'm
- 2:58Speaker 1: thankful for the steroids. But with Jose, you got the steroids,
- 3:02Speaker 1: the body, the looks madonna, baseball's bouncing off of his
- 3:06Speaker 1: head in the outfield, forty homers, forty stolen bases, all
- 3:09Speaker 1: in the same season, and then you got all the
- 3:11Speaker 1: public relations drama ratting out other ballplayers. If you wrote
- 3:15Speaker 1: about the character Jose can Teco in the screenplay, you'd
- 3:18Speaker 1: likely never sell it because it's all just too unbelievable,
- 3:22Speaker 1: And there are many, many, many unbelievable characters in stories
- 3:25Speaker 1: from baseball's history and just sports history in general. I
- 3:29Speaker 1: was thinking about the Jose this week, of course, and
- 3:32Speaker 1: that got me into a wormhole on strange and dark
- 3:36Speaker 1: stories from baseball history, and I came upon the story
- 3:39Speaker 1: a story i'd heard, I'd heard before mentioned. I'd never
- 3:43Speaker 1: really read about it, something that had come up at
- 3:45Speaker 1: parties before, way before my time. But I'd heard mention
- 3:49Speaker 1: of this story before. The story of Doc Ellis from
- 3:52Speaker 1: the Pittsburgh Pirates who threw a no hitter fifty four
- 3:55Speaker 1: years ago just happens to be fifty four years ago
- 3:58Speaker 1: this week, on June twelfth, nineteen sev Now, lots of
- 4:02Speaker 1: pictures have thrown no hitters, but Doc Ellis threw his
- 4:06Speaker 1: no hitter in nineteen seventy while tripping his brains out
- 4:09Speaker 1: on LSD. I'm sorry, it just sounds funny coming out
- 4:14Speaker 1: of my mouth. As the story goes, Doc was hanging
- 4:18Speaker 1: out with a friend in Los Angeles while the Pirates
- 4:20Speaker 1: were in Southern California to take on the Padres in
- 4:23Speaker 1: San Diego. So Doc wakes up in his friend's apartment
- 4:26Speaker 1: after a day of tripping on LSD, and he found
- 4:29Speaker 1: the stash, and he decided to drop another hit. Now
- 4:32Speaker 1: this is before he realized, apparently that he was that
- 4:37Speaker 1: day's starter for the Pittsburgh Pirates versus the San Diego Padres.
- 4:41Speaker 1: So he drops the acid unwittingly knowing that he's pitching
- 4:44Speaker 1: that day. But then he finds out, I guess, and
- 4:47Speaker 1: he high tails it down to San Diego. He barely
- 4:49Speaker 1: makes it in time to the game. I mean, honestly,
- 4:51Speaker 1: it's a miracle that he even made it to the
- 4:52Speaker 1: stadium while tripping. You know, it's just it's impossible to
- 4:56Speaker 1: do anything. Anyway, he made it, and he made his
- 5:01Speaker 1: way into the starting lineup on the mound for the Pirates.
- 5:05Speaker 1: And that day his pitching was erratic but effective. Okay,
- 5:10Speaker 1: he walked eight through nine innings. Ok he walked eight batters,
- 5:14Speaker 1: he struck out six. He dodged balls that were put
- 5:17Speaker 1: into play that were nowhere near him. He claims that
- 5:20Speaker 1: he saw Jimmy Hendrick step into the batter's box wielding
- 5:22Speaker 1: a stratocaster for a bat and that he struck him out.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Doc hit a batter, but he did not give up
- 5:28Speaker 1: a hit remarkably. After all this, of course, doc ellis
- 5:33Speaker 1: possibly more famous for going on a year later to
- 5:36Speaker 1: win the World Series with the Pirates in nineteen seventy one.
- 5:40Speaker 1: He then retired in the early eighties, and he told
- 5:42Speaker 1: this story about pitching the no hitter on acid. This
- 5:45Speaker 1: remarkable story, of course, Doc has his detractors, those who
- 5:52Speaker 1: claim that he's full of shit, that this never happened,
- 5:55Speaker 1: that he made it all up. But if you listen
- 5:57Speaker 1: to Doc's depiction of how he felt that day on
- 5:59Speaker 1: the mound, and if you yourself have ever taken LSD,
- 6:03Speaker 1: you can't help but come away from his story with
- 6:05Speaker 1: a feeling of familiality and a belief that Doc's story
- 6:09Speaker 1: is true. I'm all for keeping baseball and sports in general,
- 6:14Speaker 1: just keeping it pure, keeping a level playing field. You know,
- 6:18Speaker 1: long before Doc Ellis and his LSD and Jose Canseco
- 6:21Speaker 1: and his steroids, drugs and or illicit substances, They've always
- 6:27Speaker 1: been part of the game and as such have given
- 6:30Speaker 1: us great stories. Now, Doc and Jose being of course,
- 6:33Speaker 1: exhibits A and B. Jose was a punk in a
- 6:36Speaker 1: lot of ways, like I said before, and like I
- 6:38Speaker 1: mentioned in the full episode, the ratting out of other players.
- 6:41Speaker 1: It's this brutal, you know. And Doc, on the other hand,
- 6:44Speaker 1: was punk rock. He was righteous, He was a true
- 6:47Speaker 1: rack on tour, you know, before punk Rock even existed.
- 6:50Speaker 1: He challenged the powers that be in baseball in the
- 6:52Speaker 1: best possible way, calling out the league for its then
- 6:55Speaker 1: systemic racism, refusing to conform as a player. Doc was
- 6:59Speaker 1: pretty punk rock, okay, again before we even had a
- 7:01Speaker 1: name for it, before punk existed, and he was definitely,
- 7:04Speaker 1: in his way a rock star. And it got me
- 7:07Speaker 1: thinking this obvious question, and I love this question, and
- 7:11Speaker 1: again it's it's an obvious thing to ask, but what
- 7:13Speaker 1: athletes would have made the best rock stars? What athletes
- 7:19Speaker 1: had that rock star vibe or have it can be
- 7:21Speaker 1: a current athlete as well. I can be any jock
- 7:23Speaker 1: from any era, Doc Ellis, Dennis Rodman, Patrick Mahomes, Deon Sanders,
- 7:29Speaker 1: of course, I mean Michael Jordan. Come on. I heard
- 7:32Speaker 1: someone in our Patreon chat today I asked this question
- 7:35Speaker 1: and someone remarked that Peyton and Eli Manning are the
- 7:38Speaker 1: Eddie and Alex van Halen of football, which I think
- 7:42Speaker 1: is a stretch, but I can kind of if I
- 7:44Speaker 1: bend my brain just right, I can kind of see
- 7:47Speaker 1: what they mean. But I want to know what you
- 7:49Speaker 1: guys think. Which athletes, let me know, six one seven
- 7:52Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight, which athletes do
- 7:56Speaker 1: you think could have been rock stars? Or just which
- 7:58Speaker 1: athletes embodied that or embody that rock star vibe? Six
- 8:01Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight voicemail
- 8:05Speaker 1: and text I'll be back in a flash. So part
- 8:27Speaker 1: of the doc Ellis story that I uncovered today is
- 8:29Speaker 1: the story of how he gave back after he left baseball.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Doc Ellis was an addict, and he went through recovery
- 8:36Speaker 1: after retiring, and he started his second career as a
- 8:38Speaker 1: drug counselor with a focus on helping prisoners get clean.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I found the story to be super comforting, to be inspiring.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys have heard me talking
- 8:47Speaker 1: about this lately, but it's something that's really occupying my brain.
- 8:50Speaker 1: I find myself seeking out these charitable stories of goodwill
- 8:55Speaker 1: when I'm in these dark story or coming out of
- 8:57Speaker 1: these dark story wormholes from listening to disgrace slam. More
- 9:01Speaker 1: often than not we hit a note of redemption and
- 9:04Speaker 1: the conclusion of our stories, but we seldom go deep
- 9:06Speaker 1: into the acts of grace demonstrated by these subjects, instead
- 9:09Speaker 1: of course focusing on the disgrace, but on my own
- 9:12Speaker 1: late at night, with the glow of the monitor, the
- 9:14Speaker 1: phone giving me a headache sort of, you know, just
- 9:17Speaker 1: fucking wrapped in the darkness of researching or writing another
- 9:21Speaker 1: episode about a disgraced figure from the dark side of entertainment.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I find myself, like I said, seeking these stories of
- 9:28Speaker 1: grace out. It's a salve, it's a cleanse. It's a
- 9:32Speaker 1: reminder that there is a lot of good in the world,
- 9:35Speaker 1: and the good goes unrecognized, the good goes unmentioned more
- 9:39Speaker 1: often than not. And I do believe, even though the
- 9:42Speaker 1: bad is being shouted at us by the loudest voices
- 9:45Speaker 1: in the room, I do truly believe that the good
- 9:49Speaker 1: outweighs the bad in this world. And when it came
- 9:52Speaker 1: to Doc Ellis, I was happy that I didn't even
- 9:54Speaker 1: have to dig too deep to find to find that good.
- 9:57Speaker 1: He's a fascinating guy and I encourage you to check
- 9:59Speaker 1: him out. Pretty sure I'll be doing an episode on
- 10:01Speaker 1: Doc at some point. Story is just too damn good now.
- 10:06Speaker 1: As for other stories beyond baseball, last week, we dealt
- 10:09Speaker 1: with the story of Tom Ripley in our first meeting
- 10:12Speaker 1: of the Disgraceland book Club. Okay, this thing's sprung up
- 10:16Speaker 1: on our Patreon chat and we all jumped on a
- 10:20Speaker 1: zoom last week and we had a great conversation about
- 10:23Speaker 1: Patricia high Smith and her novel, The Talented Mister Ripley.
- 10:27Speaker 1: We obviously got into the film with Jude Law and
- 10:30Speaker 1: Matt Damon, and we even talked about the Netflix series Ripley.
- 10:33Speaker 1: We're kind of in the Ripley universe. Great stories, great
- 10:36Speaker 1: stories there. I had a lot of fun doing this, guys,
- 10:39Speaker 1: if you're listening, thanks again. It was a blast to
- 10:42Speaker 1: get to get to meet some of you guys, even
- 10:45Speaker 1: though virtually get to get to put a face to
- 10:47Speaker 1: the name, face to the avatar that I see on Instagram,
- 10:50Speaker 1: and then see you guys in the community chat. Like
- 10:52Speaker 1: I said on Patreon, just great to connect. We have
- 10:56Speaker 1: a second book club. We're gonna do it in July.
- 10:58Speaker 1: We don't have a day picked out yet, but we'll
- 11:00Speaker 1: well zero in on that date in the next couple
- 11:01Speaker 1: of days if you want to get ahead. The book
- 11:04Speaker 1: that we're reading is Tell No. One by Harlan Coben.
- 11:07Speaker 1: That is a fantastic page turner. It is the definition
- 11:11Speaker 1: of a page turner. You're gonna want to read this book.
- 11:14Speaker 1: If you have read the book already, read it again.
- 11:17Speaker 1: It's worth it. It's that good. It's that fucking good.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Trust me, you know you've read it. Anyways, will be
- 11:23Speaker 1: Anaska date for the second meeting of the Disgrace lad
- 11:26Speaker 1: Book Club very shortly. All right, this week, we of
- 11:30Speaker 1: course launched this episode on Jose Canseco. Let's talk about
- 11:34Speaker 1: the sources that we use for this episode. Articles, newspaper articles,
- 11:38Speaker 1: magazine articles, so many articles, lots of sports writing. Fascinating figure.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Lots of people wanted to write Jose Canseco. This is
- 11:45Speaker 1: the late nineteen eighties, early nineteen nineties, and Jose was
- 11:48Speaker 1: a fixture in the news. Now, if you're not old
- 11:50Speaker 1: enough to remember firsthand, this is the age of the
- 11:52Speaker 1: baseball player as an undeniable cultural icon. It's sad that
- 11:56Speaker 1: it's not that way anymore, but just trust me, that's
- 11:59Speaker 1: what it was like. Not that we hadn't had iconic
- 12:01Speaker 1: baseball players in the past. Before the eighties. Of course,
- 12:03Speaker 1: we did Babe Ruth, Jodomaggio, Hank Aaron, Ted Williams, the
- 12:06Speaker 1: list goes on, Willie Mays, Reggie Jackson. But in the
- 12:10Speaker 1: eighties and the nineties you had Bo Jackson. Okay, who
- 12:12Speaker 1: was in these ubiquitous Nike commercials that were awesome. Bob
- 12:16Speaker 1: Jackson and Bo Diddley. I mean, come on. You had
- 12:18Speaker 1: Mark Maguire, you had Sammy Sosa, you had Jose Canseco. Again,
- 12:22Speaker 1: these sort of like superhero characters, guys who are mashing
- 12:26Speaker 1: taters like we've never seen before. These guys turned baseball
- 12:28Speaker 1: into such a spectacle that people who didn't even like
- 12:31Speaker 1: baseball were watching baseball. Okay, it was like a reality
- 12:34Speaker 1: show before reality shows. Audiences tuned in to see who
- 12:37Speaker 1: would take the lead in the home run race every night.
- 12:39Speaker 1: It was awesome. It was awesome. The players did this
- 12:43Speaker 1: largely though, with the help of steroids, which is not awesome,
- 12:48Speaker 1: but we didn't know it at the time, so you
- 12:49Speaker 1: can't blame us, right Anyways, go listen to our Jose
- 12:52Speaker 1: Can Seco episode. You're gonna hear more about that the
- 12:54Speaker 1: steroid era, specifically Jose's relationship with steroids. And my point
- 12:59Speaker 1: here is that and Seco, for one, was incredible fodder
- 13:02Speaker 1: for newspapers and magazines, and not just because he was
- 13:05Speaker 1: a great player, but because also because he had this
- 13:08Speaker 1: sort of thing going on with Madonna. Uh later got
- 13:11Speaker 1: trolled by fans and this amazing incident that I'm not
- 13:14Speaker 1: going to rehash here, but it's in the episode You
- 13:16Speaker 1: got to check it out. He was unapologetic about his
- 13:19Speaker 1: steroid use, which you know, I go both ways on
- 13:22Speaker 1: It's a very complicated issue here with Jose. But Jose Canseco,
- 13:28Speaker 1: you know, he was in, as they say, the show,
- 13:31Speaker 1: and Jose himself also was the show in a lot
- 13:34Speaker 1: of ways. That's I guess the point I'm trying to make.
- 13:37Speaker 1: So we didn't have to go far to find great articles,
- 13:41Speaker 1: great sports writing on Jose Canseco. Sports Illustrated there's a
- 13:46Speaker 1: great article titled The Summer of His Discontent written by
- 13:49Speaker 1: longtime Boston journalist Peter Gammon's great baseball writer. Boston journalist
- 13:54Speaker 1: doesn't do Peter credit. He's he's like the one of
- 13:57Speaker 1: the greatest baseball writers of all time. Pretty sure he's
- 13:59Speaker 1: in the Hall of Fame. Yeah, he's definitely in the
- 14:00Speaker 1: Hall of it where he should be if he's not. Anyways,
- 14:02Speaker 1: you get an up close and personal look at how
- 14:04Speaker 1: Jose felt, in his words, as a gorilla in a
- 14:09Speaker 1: zoo with all the fans and haters, mainly in the
- 14:11Speaker 1: cops who are clocking as every move. I mean, Jose
- 14:14Speaker 1: got into a lot of trouble. As you're going to
- 14:15Speaker 1: hear in this art in this episode. Excuse me now,
- 14:18Speaker 1: when it comes to books, Jose Canseco did write a
- 14:21Speaker 1: book or he got some help writing a book called Juiced,
- 14:24Speaker 1: Wild Times, Rampant Roods, Smash Hits and how Baseball got big,
- 14:29Speaker 1: keyword there big. We approached this cautiously. This book. We
- 14:34Speaker 1: did not take it all as gospel because while was
- 14:36Speaker 1: written by an unreliable narrator, Jose Canseco. But the whole
- 14:40Speaker 1: story about what happened ins that Madonna's place that came
- 14:42Speaker 1: directly from Jose and not in the book. In an
- 14:44Speaker 1: online interview, you got to take some of this stuff,
- 14:47Speaker 1: like I said, with a grain of salt, compare it
- 14:48Speaker 1: and contrast it with what's been written out there by
- 14:50Speaker 1: other reputable authors and publications. But what do you think
- 14:55Speaker 1: was Jose Canseco a rock star? You know who was
- 14:57Speaker 1: from that era? Bo Jackson? Definitely rockstar. Like I said before,
- 15:01Speaker 1: Dion Sanders six one seven nine oh six six six
- 15:05Speaker 1: three eight, doesn't have to just be baseball guys, Give
- 15:07Speaker 1: me a call, leave me a voicemail, send me a text,
- 15:10Speaker 1: Let me know who you think, which athletes you think best?
- 15:14Speaker 1: Embody that rock star vibe? Who could have been rock
- 15:17Speaker 1: stars had they been given a different set of talents.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Uh.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Like I said, I'm leaning into this. Deon Sanders take
- 15:22Speaker 1: that's an obvious one. But bo Jackson was just a
- 15:24Speaker 1: phenomena when he came out. He was phenomenon. Excuse me
- 15:27Speaker 1: when he came out unlike anyone else. And I think, yeah,
- 15:30Speaker 1: I think Jose as dopey as he was, and for
- 15:32Speaker 1: all the blunders he made, uh, he was in his
- 15:36Speaker 1: way a rockstar. Six one seven, nine oh six, six
- 15:38Speaker 1: six three eight. Let me know what you think. You
- 15:40Speaker 1: can send me a text at that number, or you
- 15:42Speaker 1: can leave me a voicemail, just like Barry in the
- 15:45Speaker 1: nine oh four.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Hey, Jake Barry from the nineho four, I really appreciate
- 15:51Speaker 3: take a episode, man. Gives me a chance to saw
- 15:54Speaker 3: some baseball. Do this real quick. So the steroids are
- 15:58Speaker 3: for bulking up, true, But also when you're going through
- 16:00Speaker 3: the grind of one hundred and sixty two game season,
- 16:02Speaker 3: including the playoffs, you don't have time to hit the
- 16:05Speaker 3: gym every day. You don't have time or the ability
- 16:08Speaker 3: to recover as quickly from your workouts and stay big
- 16:11Speaker 3: like that. So that's what the steroids did for the guys,
- 16:14Speaker 3: not necessarily making them big, but recovering from injury and
- 16:17Speaker 3: then recovering from their workouts. Now, you can't, no matter
- 16:21Speaker 3: what you do, steroids or fucking X ray vision or whatever,
- 16:26Speaker 3: being able to turn around on a ninety five mile
- 16:27Speaker 3: an hour fastball and hit that bitch four hundred and
- 16:30Speaker 3: fifty feet is not something that you get from a drug.
- 16:33Speaker 3: It's not something that you get from you know, you
- 16:36Speaker 3: can't just say I'm a teacher how to turn on
- 16:38Speaker 3: a fastball as God given or whatever you believe in,
- 16:42Speaker 3: and it requires hours and hours and hours and hours
- 16:45Speaker 3: of practice. So this guy, actually, you know, he put
- 16:47Speaker 3: in the Times.
- 16:48Speaker 4: A phenomenal player.
- 16:50Speaker 3: It's a shame that his legacy was tainted with you know,
- 16:53Speaker 3: some of his actions within Again, how much of that
- 16:55Speaker 3: actually played into the kind of player he was on
- 16:58Speaker 3: the field, you know, helping him to achieve that forty
- 17:02Speaker 3: forty season. But anyway, man, just like I said, I
- 17:05Speaker 3: appreciate the episode. Give me a chance to rap about
- 17:07Speaker 3: a little bit of baseball. Thanks.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Shake later, Yeah, man, Arry I hear you. You Steroids
- 17:14Speaker 1: are not gonna help you turn on a ninety mile
- 17:15Speaker 1: an hour fastball, that's for sure. And I think hitting
- 17:17Speaker 1: a fastball, uh in the in the major leagues is
- 17:21Speaker 1: probably the hardest thing to do in sports. But steroids
- 17:25Speaker 1: are gonna help you mash that baseball over the mass frickin' pike.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Uh if you're at Fenway Park and you're juiced on
- 17:32Speaker 1: the rhids. So you got a point, and then I
- 17:35Speaker 1: kind of like where you're going there with. You know,
- 17:38Speaker 1: it's all is Jose's behavior is disgraceful as it is.
- 17:41Speaker 1: How much of that was responsible for the player that
- 17:44Speaker 1: he became, that sort of animal attitude that he brought
- 17:48Speaker 1: to the field. It's a good question. Six point seven
- 17:50Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight. I don't think
- 17:52Speaker 1: you get the one without the other. I hope that, uh,
- 17:55Speaker 1: that answers you question. Nine oh nine. Let's hear from
- 17:58Speaker 1: the nine o nine, the one, nine.
- 18:00Speaker 4: O nine, Jake, you magnificent bastard. It's Scott from the
- 18:05Speaker 4: nine oh nine. I'm seeing Dylan in concerts. I did
- 18:09Speaker 4: so in nineteen ninety one. I was working for a
- 18:14Speaker 4: country radio station and Dylan was doing a series of
- 18:18Speaker 4: shows with the Kentucky Headhunters as his opening act, which
- 18:23Speaker 4: weird bill and look up the Kentucky Headhunters. We won't
- 18:27Speaker 4: go into it here, but when Dylan comes out, he
- 18:32Speaker 4: is backlit the entire show, so his face is completely dark.
- 18:39Speaker 4: You can't see him. You can hear him, you see
- 18:42Speaker 4: the band playing, but you cannot see Dylan. And to
- 18:46Speaker 4: this day, I still don't know if it was him.
- 18:49Speaker 4: So that's my Dylan story. Love you stuff. I'll be
- 18:54Speaker 4: listening to you on the pod. Thanks, Jake.
- 18:56Speaker 1: You know I see where you go with this. Nine
- 18:59Speaker 1: O nine Scott. Wow, you're kind of blowing my mind.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Man.
- 19:04Speaker 1: This Dylan is just the guy to do what you're suggesting,
- 19:09Speaker 1: which is actually put on a concert, but not actually
- 19:13Speaker 1: put on a concert, and how somebody stand in for him.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna look this up. I don't believe it to
- 19:19Speaker 1: be true, of course, but I don't I'm not totally
- 19:22Speaker 1: writing it off. And there's a precedent here from music history.
- 19:28Speaker 1: If you know the story of the Zombies and zz
- 19:30Speaker 1: Top check that out, Scott. I'm not gonna burn it
- 19:33Speaker 1: here because eventually I want to do an episode on it.
- 19:36Speaker 1: But there's a very very close comp to your your
- 19:39Speaker 1: Dylan theory. All right, all right, let's let's do some
- 19:43Speaker 1: tech six one seven, nine six, six, six three eight
- 19:48Speaker 1: four one two. Uh is writing in and apologizing in
- 19:51Speaker 1: four one two. I'm not sure what you're apologizing for
- 19:54Speaker 1: for being so harsh. She sent me a bunch of
- 19:55Speaker 1: voice memos, not voice mails, audio clips which I have
- 19:59Speaker 1: not listen to. And I think if I upset you,
- 20:02Speaker 1: I apologize for that. Not my intent. Send me a
- 20:05Speaker 1: voicemail six one seven nine oh six six six three
- 20:07Speaker 1: eight Just call and just leave a message man three
- 20:09Speaker 1: one seven right saying Hey. For biggest villains and music industry,
- 20:13Speaker 1: I think we need to add Phil Spector to that list.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Love your podcast and always keeping me entertained. This is
- 20:17Speaker 1: Lauren who lives in the two eight but still has
- 20:20Speaker 1: a three one seven area code. I hear you, Lauren.
- 20:23Speaker 1: I still have my six one seven area code and
- 20:25Speaker 1: I don't live in the six one seven anymore. And
- 20:26Speaker 1: I hear you about Phil Spector as well. Check Out
- 20:29Speaker 1: the series we produced a couple of years back called
- 20:31Speaker 1: Blood on the Tracks. We did ten episodes on Phil
- 20:34Speaker 1: and you're right, one of the biggest villains ever. Also
- 20:36Speaker 1: chapter on on Phil in my book Disgrace Lam Musicians
- 20:39Speaker 1: getting away with murder and behaving very badly. Speaking of
- 20:43Speaker 1: books nine four nine texts in Hey, I want to
- 20:46Speaker 1: send you a copy of my book. I think it'll
- 20:48Speaker 1: be run up your rally. It's a compilation of tours
- 20:50Speaker 1: stories from some great bands Damned X, Crass, Generation X, Bronx, Tsol,
- 20:56Speaker 1: and about fifty more. Can I send you one? Where
- 20:58Speaker 1: can I set it? Thanks? Greg? Greg SAIDs picture of
- 21:00Speaker 1: his book with this awesome cover. Book is entitled Hell
- 21:04Speaker 1: on Wheels by Greg Jacobs. Greg Jacobs sounds very familiar, Greg,
- 21:08Speaker 1: I will be in touch and I will give you

- 21:12Speaker 1: Check out Greg's book Hell on Wheels. Hey, Jake, it's
- 21:15Speaker 1: kel from seven to eight to one. You read my
- 21:17Speaker 1: text last week on the podcast, and I was like,
- 21:19Speaker 1: oh shit, that's so fucking cool. I think Jerry Lewis
- 21:22Speaker 1: is right up there, are Kelly, possibly worse. Of course,
- 21:25Speaker 1: I learned this from your podcast. I've learned so much
- 21:27Speaker 1: from listening to your podcast. Anyways, this ties with what
- 21:30Speaker 1: you were talking about with Chaos and Charles Manson, ETCETERA
- 21:33Speaker 1: awesome book. When I told my mom, who was born
- 21:35Speaker 1: in nineteen fifty two, about Jerry Lee Lewis and the
- 21:38Speaker 1: thing he did. She had never heard that, and I
- 21:40Speaker 1: feel like she didn't really believe me. She's from that
- 21:43Speaker 1: boomer era where they ignore bad shit like that. It's
- 21:47Speaker 1: so fucking crazy. I did not put anything past this government.
- 21:50Speaker 1: I love my country, distress the government or any of Hollywood, etc.
- 21:54Speaker 1: As a country, we really need to wake the fuck up.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Keep spitting that truth, Jake. I love you, Disgraceland rocket
- 21:59Speaker 1: rolla thank you, Hey, thanks, Kel, appreciate that. Give your
- 22:03Speaker 1: mom a hug. You know we got I've been harsh
- 22:05Speaker 1: to the boomers here in the past, and unnecessarily, I
- 22:09Speaker 1: think on my own. I want to just say that
- 22:12Speaker 1: right now. And you know your mom, yeay, you know.
- 22:16Speaker 1: I don't know your mom, But give her a hug. Right,
- 22:17Speaker 1: you can't go wrong. All right, we're gonna get out
