Latest / Mini Scroll / MINI SCROLL: Spotify Wrapped 2024 backlash, Barry Keoghan x Sabrina Carpenter cheating rumours + BOQTOQ goes viral
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini school, everyone, and welcome back to a
- 0:23podcast from home today. As I mentioned last week, right
- 0:28now I am flying solo on editing the podcast episode.
- 0:32So I always edit Mini because those just go up right away.
- 0:35But the deep dives are always edited by Danny, who's on our
- 0:38team, and she is on a big trip after she graduated uni.
- 0:43And the extra workload is so intense you can probably hear
- 0:48Pumpkin coughing behind me on my bed.
- 0:50I can't. These are the sweet sounds of
- 0:54recording from home. But yes, the workload is crazy
- 0:56and I'm just feeling really burnt out.
- 0:58Like I know it's that time of year where you feel like you're
- 1:00crawling to the end of the year. And I really was like, I cannot
- 1:05commute in today. So I think this will probably be
- 1:07the last mini that I have to do from home because the next two
- 1:11podcast episodes before we go on break for Christmas.
- 1:15They'll need less editing. They're not as much like deep
- 1:18dive video essays as they are. I mean, I don't really want to
- 1:22spoil the topics for you guys, but they're like a little bit
- 1:25more chill anyways. So that is why I am podcasting
- 1:28from home right now. The other update that I have for
- 1:30you guys is OK, so maybe like 3 weeks ago, Annabelle, who is our
- 1:37podcast producer, she is always like checking everything on
- 1:42socials for us. She's always on Reddit.
- 1:44She's the one that helps me find different stories.
- 1:47She's the one that researches and helps me write a lot of the
- 1:50deep dives and stuff. So you guys know, I talked about
- 1:53Annabelle a lot, but she was on Reddit.
- 1:56She's always like typing in infinite scroll Centennial world
- 1:59on Reddit, keeping tabs. And she found that one of you
- 2:04guys, one of the podcast listeners, started a subreddit
- 2:07for infinite scroll and there was actually a spelling error in
- 2:11the URL. So she had messaged the admin
- 2:14and just like let them know. And they were so sweet back.
- 2:17I guess they just got back to her and she was like, yeah, they
- 2:20were so sweet. I think that the spelling error
- 2:22is fixed. It is infinite scroll podcast.
- 2:25I swear it was not started by anyone on our team.
- 2:29Like Annabelle straight up just like came across this, but very
- 2:33exciting, very scary. You know, Reddit can be a very
- 2:37scary place, but really exciting.
- 2:39So I think Annabelle will probably be, you know, like
- 2:42keeping an eye on it and maybe responding to some things here
- 2:46and there in the subreddit, which is really exciting.
- 2:48All right, let's get into the stories for today.
- 2:52So the first story that I have for you guys is, is Spotify
- 2:56Wrapped came out today and Spotify is getting a little bit
- 3:00dragged right now on social media for excluding several of
- 3:04the loved categories or beloved categories and labels that
- 3:08they've had in the past. So today Spotify Wrapped came
- 3:12out and we all found out, you know, a little bit more about
- 3:14ourselves. But if we were in your Spotify
- 3:17Wrapped, first of all, thank you so much for all the listening.
- 3:20Please, if you are going to share it, like tag us, tag us on
- 3:23Instagram, tag me on Instagram infinite scroll podcast or
- 3:27Lauren Meisner under score, because I would absolutely love
- 3:29to see it. It's so exciting to like it's
- 3:31literally like Christmas Day for especially like an independent
- 3:35podcast like ours, part of an independent media brand.
- 3:38Like it's so exciting that you know, there's so many of you
- 3:41where we are like in your top five podcasts of the whole year.
- 3:44So please tag us. But yeah, so to Spotify wrapped
- 3:47today. I'll tell you guys what my
- 3:49Spotify was if you guys are interested.
- 3:51I know that there's always jokes that people are like, nobody
- 3:53cares about this, but I actually really care about people.
- 3:55Spotify Wrapped, it's something that I've started caring about a
- 3:59lot more like as the years go on.
- 4:01I don't know, I'm just like interested in what my friends
- 4:03are listening to and stuff, OK. My top artists were Taylor
- 4:07Swift, Charli XCX, Chapel, Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Peach PRC.
- 4:13Last year my very top artist I think was Peach and then I think
- 4:16it was Taylor after that. I'm actually surprised there's
- 4:18not more like rock vibes in there.
- 4:21I listen to like such an array of music.
- 4:23I talked about this recently. With that being said, my
- 4:25October, my top artists in October were at Linkin Park,
- 4:30Limp Bizkit, and System of a Down.
- 4:33So I don't know what the fuck I was going through in October,
- 4:36but things were unwell in October for me.
- 4:39Clearly. I went from like bubble gum pop
- 4:42vibes for like the whole year to like hardcore new metal vibes.
- 4:47And my top song was the Tortured Poets Department.
- 4:49And I guess I'm not really that surprised because I love that
- 4:53song. I love that song.
- 4:55And I know I've talked about this a little bit on the
- 4:57podcast, but this year's been a really hard year for me.
- 4:59And so Tortured Poets Department coming out, I was kind of like a
- 5:02hater when it first was announced.
- 5:04And when it first came out, I was like, Oh my God, eye roll
- 5:07vibes. But it was the perfect album for
- 5:10me during this like really difficult year.
- 5:13It was like the melancholy vibes that I needed, you know?
- 5:16And I really just love like a Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff
- 5:20collab. I know a lot of people have a
- 5:22lot of things to say about their like music together and that she
- 5:25needs to branch out and stuff, but something about them
- 5:28together is like magic to me. So I love it.
- 5:32OK. But a lot of people across
- 5:34social media have been questioning why Spotify Wrapped
- 5:37feels so different this year and they are not happy about it.
- 5:41So in years past, Spotify Wrapped would include like
- 5:44really quirky personalized features like telling you what
- 5:48city your music tastes like, fits into giving an aura based
- 5:53on your music. I remember they did that one
- 5:55year and like those types of things are like noticeably
- 5:58missing. Like the was much shorter this
- 6:00year. It was basically like here's
- 6:01your top artist, you know, here's your top songs, that kind
- 6:04of stuff. However, I do want to say I also
- 6:07remember that when Spotify did have those kind of unhinged,
- 6:10personal, quirky little features, people made fun of
- 6:14them all across social media. Now everyone's like, where is
- 6:18it? I want to know what city I am.
- 6:21The one thing that I really liked about the Spotify wrapped
- 6:23this year was that you could see the evolution of your music
- 6:25taste as the months went on. So that's where like, you know,
- 6:29I knew that in October I was mostly listening to like new
- 6:31metal rock, whereas in like June and July I was mostly listening
- 6:35to pop like Sabrina Carpenter, Charlie XCX.
- 6:38So I liked seeing the evolution. I thought that was more
- 6:41interesting than being like, oh, here's this random city that
- 6:44like we claim or we think like suits you.
- 6:46But anyways, I really I like that.
- 6:47I like that evolution, although then in the evolution is where
- 6:51the like crazy personalization came in.
- 6:54So let me read you guys, some of the ones that I've found online.
- 6:58This is just from social media, like people that I know.
- 7:00So Spotify wrapped will say like March was your XXX and it will
- 7:06be like based on your music of March.
- 7:08So for example, this one, I saw this one.
- 7:10So August was your coastal grandmother Beatle esque yacht
- 7:14rock moment. May was your pumpkin spice Vogue
- 7:1890s pop moment. OK.
- 7:22July was your pink Pilates Princess Hollywood pop moment.
- 7:26OK, Like word salad, but it's so obscure and niche that people
- 7:32are sharing them because it's like so funny.
- 7:34Oh, also, sorry, this is all over the place.
- 7:37Also, getting the Spotify Wrapped for the podcast was
- 7:41really cool because we could see that almost 70% of our listeners
- 7:45now are new listeners that we got this year, which is really,
- 7:49really crazy. So we've seen so much growth
- 7:50this year with the podcast, and that obviously doesn't include
- 7:53YouTube, and YouTube is growing pretty quickly as well.
- 7:55So very exciting. But yeah, definitely it.
- 7:58Leave me a comment on Spotify or YouTube if you guys had some
- 8:02unhinged like evolution like your May was some word salad.
- 8:08I would love to hear what you guys were getting.
- 8:11OK the next story that I have is that influencer Brecky Hill has
- 8:14sparked cheating rumors between Barry Keoghan and Sabrina
- 8:18Carpenter. I think I said Barry Keoghan's
- 8:20name wrong yesterday. Sorry about that.
- 8:22So OK also it turns out we all agree that Sabrina and Barry
- 8:27were most likely PRI Got so many comments about that when I said
- 8:31that yesterday. But there's still are some
- 8:34cheating rumors going around so I'm going to entertain them but
- 8:39I don't know if I necessarily believe it.
- 8:41OK so after the news that Sabrina and Barry split Brecky
- 8:44Hill who is an only fans model and a huge tik toker, she has
- 8:48over 4 million followers. She started sparking rumors that
- 8:52she was like, somehow involved in it when she started reposting
- 8:57videos and like, blind items and things like that, like claiming
- 9:00that he cheated on Sabrina with a blonde influencer.
- 9:03So Dumas was the first to post, I guess, about their breakup
- 9:06rumors a few days ago. So she posted a blind saying
- 9:09that they had split and he had cheated on Sabrina with a blonde
- 9:13influencer in LA and that Sabrina had allegedly seen
- 9:19messages between the two of them on his phone.
- 9:21And then once mainstream outlets started covering their breakup
- 9:25and it seems like, OK, their breakup is definitely confirmed,
- 9:28at least by, you know, their camps.
- 9:30Not necessarily the cheating rumors, but like it seems like
- 9:32their breakup is confirmed then this is when Brecky started
- 9:36reposting different videos and things like that.
- 9:39And that's basically the gist of the story.
- 9:41She's just like getting herself involved by reposting
- 9:44speculative videos and things like that, that claim that like
- 9:49he cheated on Sabrina and that insinuated was with her.
- 9:53I'm going to say this seems like a bit of like a cloud chasing
- 9:56moment from her. I think she knew that it would
- 9:58get her name talked about. It would get a lot of engagement
- 10:01on her page. And I'm sure she's part of the
- 10:03creator TikTok fund and so she's probably making money off of
- 10:06this. So I don't know, to me, I feel
- 10:09like this is just an easy way for her to like drum up a little
- 10:14bit of like speculation drama around her name without having
- 10:18to come out and like specifically make a statement.
- 10:20She hasn't said anything outwardly yet, at least at at
- 10:23the time of me recording this. And I actually like, I don't
- 10:27think there's going to be much to say.
- 10:29I think even if she did hook up with Barry, I think like we all
- 10:33agreed, all of us, the scrollers, we agreed they
- 10:36Sabrina and Barry were in APR relationship.
- 10:39All right, the last story that I have for you guys, this one is
- 10:41like so unhinged. Annabelle was like, you have to
- 10:44include this story and I was like, OK, so there is a creator
- 10:49named Molly who is going super viral right now on TikTok
- 10:53because she's kind of like low key trolling Ethan Slater for
- 10:59his character Bach and wicked. OK, so Molly, her handle is T
- 11:03swift fan for 20 and you guys will probably know her because
- 11:07she makes all that content where she's like, here's my impression
- 11:10of a girl who's just done with the conversation.
- 11:14I'm done with this conversation. Like, she makes content like
- 11:18that and her videos are always everywhere, at least for me.
- 11:21So her videos are everywhere again, but this time she is
- 11:24making fun of Ethan Slater's character Bach.
- 11:27She's making fun specifically of how like his love interest in
- 11:30the movie sings like me and Bach.
- 11:33Oh, me and Bach, Yeah, we're perfect together.
- 11:39So she was posting like tons of content, basically like
- 11:42trolling. The fact that anybody would like
- 11:45like Bach, I think was the point.
- 11:47But she was making so much content that she was like
- 11:49constantly, constantly coming up on people's for you pages that
- 11:53it turned into this inside joke with her audience where they
- 11:56were like, see you in a couple swipes, Queen, because like, you
- 11:59know, they'll be scrolling through like swiping through
- 12:01their for you page. And she's like there again and
- 12:03there again, making these videos about Bach.
- 12:06And now it's turned into such a viral series that she has
- 12:10decided to put together a Bach look alike competition.
- 12:14Do you look like Bach and do you feel really bad about it?
- 12:17You should anyway. Bach look alike contest this
- 12:21Saturday, Washington Square Park again.
- 12:25I'm only inviting 15 people legally noon.
- 12:28And again, like, all of this is a troll.
- 12:31Like all of this is to kind of like make fun of her like a hate
- 12:35on Ethan Slater. The girls and I were talking
- 12:38like if it wasn't Ethan Slater specifically who played Bach,
- 12:41would she be making fun of this? Probably not.
- 12:43So like there are some people that are like, this is mean.
- 12:45But like, I would say the vast majority of people see it as
- 12:48just kind of like an Internet troll and they think it's funny.
- 12:51And this is just such a good example of a creator.
- 12:54I mean, I wouldn't say there was like necessarily a strategy
- 12:57behind this, but like being able to turn her content so
- 13:01organically into a meme and create this viral moment where
- 13:05her audience keeps coming back and actually keeps commenting,
- 13:08saying like, I'm going to be back.
- 13:09And I know that the algorithm is going to keep serving me you
- 13:12because you keep creating this like hype around this one
- 13:17specific series or this one specific moment online.
- 13:20So she does hold the Bach look like competition.
- 13:22I will definitely keep tabs on that and I will let you guys
- 13:24know how it goes. But yes, this is just like a
- 13:26really funny niche viral moment and she has like created it
- 13:32herself. It didn't like accidentally
- 13:34happen. It's not like a one off video.
- 13:36She is creating this like a viral narrative around her
- 13:39content right now in a really funny way and I think people
- 13:44appreciate that. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 13:46mini scroll today. And this is actually the last
- 13:48mini scroll that I'm ever going to do as a 32 year old because I
- 13:53turned 33 on Sunday. I have very mixed feelings about
- 13:57that. But anyways, guys, thank you so
- 13:59much for listening. I love you guys.
- 14:01Please rate, review and subscribe.
- 14:03Please rate US on Spotify. There will be a deep dive
- 14:06tomorrow and then I will talk to you on Monday as a fresh 33 year
- 14:11old. Bye.
