- 0:24Speaker 1: Welcome into Jags Am. We're on location today. We love
- 0:28Speaker 1: a field trip. I'm kind Nannie Stephens, Brian Sexton, John Oh's.
- 0:31Speaker 2: You're with me.
- 0:31Speaker 1: We're now in Park, Michigan for joint practice with the Lions.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I'm a big fan of Lyne's practice.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I feel like you always can get a little something
- 0:37Speaker 2: out of not going up against your own teams.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Yeah, no doubt.
- 0:41Speaker 4: And as as Brian, you know, it's nice to wake
- 0:43Speaker 4: up and not feel like you're already sweating. The sweats
- 0:47Speaker 4: starting to come in because it is getting warmer. A
- 0:50Speaker 4: lot of good matchups talk about today, and.
- 0:51Speaker 5: We had an opportunity to visit with Mark Brunell, who
- 0:53Speaker 5: everyone who's watching knows who's up here as the quarterbacks
- 0:56Speaker 5: coach and gets an insight and they're excited.
- 0:59Speaker 3: We're excited. You know, two.
- 1:00Speaker 5: Teams that led the league in terms of year over
- 1:03Speaker 5: year wins. Both the Jaguars and Lions won six more
- 1:05Speaker 5: games in twenty twenty two than they did in twenty
- 1:08Speaker 5: twenty one, so both teams are being looked at as
- 1:12Speaker 5: up and comers, which makes it a fun day.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Absolutely, let's get into our big things.
- 1:16Speaker 1: We're going to start off with one verse one because
- 1:18Speaker 1: the ones are going against the ones, and for ones,
- 1:21Speaker 1: it's not against their own team.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:22Speaker 2: The Lions and the.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Jaguars are going to do some joint practices they just started,
- 1:27Speaker 1: so they're going to do some of these team drills
- 1:29Speaker 1: against each other, and it's nice to see exactly how
- 1:32Speaker 1: your team is going to stack up. John, can you
- 1:34Speaker 1: just kind of explain how it's a little bit different
- 1:36Speaker 1: than what we see on the day to day.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Well, it's because you're not only getting ones versus ones,
- 1:41Speaker 4: meaning they get the opportunity. There's very little work for
- 1:44Speaker 4: the backups, and you're getting more extended time for the
- 1:48Speaker 4: ones versus the ones because there's just more time to
- 1:51Speaker 4: do it. That was a very great explanation, but I
- 1:53Speaker 4: think somewhere in there as an explanation. Also, it's different
- 1:57Speaker 4: from the preseason game because the coaches can say, hey,
- 2:00Speaker 4: we want to get X number of red zone, X
- 2:02Speaker 4: number of short yardage. They can control the environment and
- 2:05Speaker 4: control what they get a chance to work on.
- 2:07Speaker 5: Doug Peterson told us in our preseason television production meeting
- 2:10Speaker 5: last Friday in Fort Worth that these reps are more
- 2:14Speaker 5: valuable than the reps that he could get them in
- 2:17Speaker 5: a preseason game because they stacked them. Let me give
- 2:20Speaker 5: you one that I'm looking for, and it's not necessarily
- 2:22Speaker 5: a one though. I think anybody who's watched Antonio Johnson
- 2:24Speaker 5: this year realize he's coming hard and fast. I mean,
- 2:27Speaker 5: this is a very talented young safety.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Why he was available in the fifth round from just
- 2:33Speaker 3: don't know.
- 2:33Speaker 5: But look, there's two guys he's going to get a
- 2:35Speaker 5: match up against, Shamir Gibbs, who Mark Burnell was telling
- 2:37Speaker 5: us is amazing in space, right, and the tight end
- 2:41Speaker 5: Sam Laporta, who is a shifty, very difficult to cover
- 2:45Speaker 5: tight end. Well, those are two positions that over the
- 2:47Speaker 5: course of the year he's going to have to be
- 2:49Speaker 5: able to account for great right, all three rookies, Let's
- 2:53Speaker 5: see how he handles two guys who are very highly
- 2:55Speaker 5: thought of by the Lions and by the way, by
- 2:57Speaker 5: the Jaguars staff.
- 2:58Speaker 1: John any specific matchups you're looking at, are you just
- 3:00Speaker 1: excited to kind of see how the Jags matchup in general?
- 3:03Speaker 4: Well, then you have to watch Aiden Hutchinson versus anton Harrison, Walker,
- 3:07Speaker 4: little whoever he matches up against.
- 3:09Speaker 3: He's a natural pass rusher.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Who can do it and It's always good for somebody
- 3:14Speaker 4: like Anton Harrison, who hasn't had very many NFL live reps,
- 3:17Speaker 4: to get them against somebody hasn't seen it. It's the
- 3:20Speaker 4: more you have seen going in a vague season, the
- 3:22Speaker 4: better for Anton Harrison.
- 3:24Speaker 2: And another high pick as well, and Aiden Hutchinson.
- 3:26Speaker 1: As we know, and I think also we didn't mention,
- 3:28Speaker 1: but some of the wide receivers going up against our
- 3:30Speaker 1: dvs are going to be interesting. Marvin Jones junior that
- 3:32Speaker 1: we're familiar with, and of course I'm onnose Brown who
- 3:35Speaker 1: has that boom or bust ability, so you have to
- 3:36Speaker 1: imagine for Tyson Campbell that'll be a good match up.
- 3:38Speaker 5: And Jamison Williams, who again Brunelle was saying, is as
- 3:41Speaker 5: fast as he has seen. I mean, the guy can
- 3:43Speaker 5: just flat out run. So a lot of these younger
- 3:45Speaker 5: defensive backs are going to have their hands full keeping
- 3:47Speaker 5: up with that speed today.
- 3:48Speaker 3: It'll be really good reps for them, and.
- 3:50Speaker 4: I guess my guess is you will see them try
- 3:53Speaker 4: to get some of the younger guys in during those
- 3:56Speaker 4: one versus ones times. They're not really ones, but I
- 3:58Speaker 4: think the coaching staff once to see some of this
- 4:00Speaker 4: third fourth, fifth corner against really good players, so you
- 4:04Speaker 4: might see Tyson and Darius Williams come out a little
- 4:06Speaker 4: bit whereas some of the other normal starters may not.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Big thing number two is going to be feeling the heat.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Now, you can take that two ways, because they're not
- 4:13Speaker 1: feeling the heat because we're not in Jacksonville right now,
- 4:15Speaker 1: which is a little bit of a nice break. I
- 4:16Speaker 1: would assume Doug Peterson talk to a little bit about
- 4:18Speaker 1: just kind of getting the team some chill time away
- 4:22Speaker 1: where you know, we're not in the beating sun in
- 4:23Speaker 1: the middle of the day in Florida. And then also
- 4:26Speaker 1: feeling the heat because you know some of these bubble
- 4:27Speaker 1: guys or maybe they didn't show out in that first
- 4:29Speaker 1: game the way they wanted to. The pressure's on a
- 4:31Speaker 1: little bit because we're getting into that section where you
- 4:33Speaker 1: need to really show what you have if you want.
- 4:35Speaker 2: To make this team.
- 4:35Speaker 1: If you're on the edge, Brian, what do you look
- 4:37Speaker 1: for in terms of just whether it's in a game
- 4:39Speaker 1: or not, what you need to see?
- 4:40Speaker 5: Well, cut down days two weeks from today, right so
- 4:42Speaker 5: you can count the number of practices, the number of games,
- 4:45Speaker 5: and then these guys who are sitting at the bottom
- 4:47Speaker 5: of the roster, kui are looking at the number of
- 4:49Speaker 5: reps they're going to get. I mean you can count them, right,
- 4:52Speaker 5: these guys, No, I only have twenty seven or thirty
- 4:54Speaker 5: five more opportunities, and they better be good to overcome
- 4:58Speaker 5: any that I made mistake WHI in the game against
- 5:00Speaker 5: the Cowboys. So yeah, the heats on. These guys know
- 5:03Speaker 5: that every rep counts, because let's be honest, John, from
- 5:07Speaker 5: one to fifty three, you can probably put forty seven
- 5:10Speaker 5: spots in place and know the roster there's only a
- 5:12Speaker 5: handful of jobs. And these guys are going back to
- 5:15Speaker 5: their hotel rooms tonight and calling home and saying I
- 5:18Speaker 5: did great today, I feel good, or pray for me.
- 5:21Speaker 3: I didn't have a good day. I need to have
- 5:23Speaker 3: a good day tomorrow.
- 5:23Speaker 4: And that could become even more important Saturday, because I
- 5:26Speaker 4: think first team guys are gonna get most of the reps,
- 5:29Speaker 4: so the second and third team guys, it feels like
- 5:31Speaker 4: Saturday is gonna be a big opportunity for them.
- 5:34Speaker 1: All right, And our third big thing is would you
- 5:36Speaker 1: rather There's an article in the Athletic actually right now
- 5:39Speaker 1: that would you rather comparison piece of the Lions and
- 5:42Speaker 1: the Jaguars we mentioned there were in similar situations right
- 5:45Speaker 1: picking the top of the drafts two years ago, having
- 5:47Speaker 1: a comeback, maybe better season than most people expected, and
- 5:51Speaker 1: then now there's high expectations. Both they're you know, expected,
- 5:54Speaker 1: if not favored, to win their divisions. But which would
- 5:56Speaker 1: you rather be? I think I know which side you
- 5:58Speaker 1: guys are gonna air on. But there is an argument
- 6:00Speaker 1: I assumed to be made for the Lions as well.
- 6:02Speaker 3: I guess.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Trevor Lawrence, Yes, that's the trump card.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I'm aware. It's just I think it's situational, right because
- 6:10Speaker 1: you look at the division maybe, I mean, the NFC
- 6:12Speaker 1: North is kind of whatever Minnesota's going to be, but
- 6:15Speaker 1: the other two are kind of out of it at
- 6:17Speaker 1: this point.
- 6:17Speaker 2: So maybe that.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Well, again, the conversation that we had with Brunel this morning,
- 6:20Speaker 5: he likes Dan Campbell, thinks they've got a good staff,
- 6:23Speaker 5: likes the ownership. The situation here with a revived team
- 6:27Speaker 5: and the facilities they have. Their salary cap is healthy.
- 6:30Speaker 5: They've got a talented squad, but they don't necessarily have
- 6:33Speaker 5: their guy at quarterback, and in Jacksonville, all of those
- 6:36Speaker 5: things are in place. Plus Trevor Lawrence. I read the
- 6:39Speaker 5: article two and I got to the end and I'm like, man,
- 6:41Speaker 5: so like twenty thousand words and the guy didn't even
- 6:43Speaker 5: tell me what he thought. I thought, I think Jaguars
- 6:47Speaker 5: are better set up because of Trevor Lawrence.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Is Trevor not practicing it?
- 6:50Speaker 2: I mean, I think we all know what was I
- 6:53Speaker 2: just thought it was interesting. I think we all know
- 6:55Speaker 2: we know what the answer is. All right, Staatewa, that's
- 6:57Speaker 2: coming up. We're going to talk about the fifty three.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Some people we have our eyes on that they're gonna
- 7:01Speaker 1: get on this final fifty three man roster. But until then,
- 7:04Speaker 1: we're live from Joint Practice training camp in Allen Park, Michigan.
- 7:08Speaker 2: We'll be right back. Price dot Com is.

- 7:21Speaker 1: Welcome back to jags Am presented by Jet Home Loans.
- 7:24Speaker 1: We are on location. We're on a field trip, whatever
- 7:27Speaker 1: you want to call it. We're in Allen Park, Michigan,
- 7:29Speaker 1: joint practice with the Lions.
- 7:30Speaker 2: We're going to talk over the fifty three.
- 7:32Speaker 1: This is the segment we do where we talk about
- 7:34Speaker 1: either people on the bubble of the roster, people that
- 7:35Speaker 1: need to do really well in camp if they want
- 7:37Speaker 1: to have a successful you know, showing So who's someone
- 7:40Speaker 1: that you guys are looking at that's kind of on
- 7:42Speaker 1: the edge right now?
- 7:42Speaker 3: Seth Williams.
- 7:43Speaker 5: I'm going with Seth uh six ' two, two hundred
- 7:46Speaker 5: and ten pounds, talented wide receiver who made two big
- 7:49Speaker 5: third down catches last week in Dallas. You know, we're
- 7:53Speaker 5: talking about that sixth receiving spot, and he's the guy
- 7:57Speaker 5: who separated himself. I know Harris and Cooks and Jarray
- 8:01Speaker 5: Jenkins all made players as well.
- 8:03Speaker 3: But Williams is the guy who can contribute on special teams.
- 8:05Speaker 5: And if you're gonna be that sixth guy and you're
- 8:07Speaker 5: going to be active on game day, you've got to
- 8:09Speaker 5: contribute on teams. And from my understanding, he's ahead in
- 8:13Speaker 5: that category. Seth Williams has been really impressive.
- 8:16Speaker 4: While I went with Jacob Harris for much the same reason.
- 8:20Speaker 4: They don't really have a throw it up and go
- 8:23Speaker 4: get it guy on this receiving corps right now. Jacob
- 8:26Speaker 4: Harris sixty five, I think he's two to ten big guy,
- 8:29Speaker 4: so to me, I don't think he'll make the team
- 8:34Speaker 4: because I think the numbers will work against him. I
- 8:36Speaker 4: do wonder if at some point during the regular season
- 8:39Speaker 4: they wish they had a guy like him. I also
- 8:41Speaker 4: think he'll definitely be in the NFL somewhere. He was
- 8:43Speaker 4: a third round pick by the Rams. He can play,
- 8:46Speaker 4: had a really bad injury when he was a rookie.
- 8:48Speaker 4: He's gonna catch on somewhere. And he's a guy to me,
- 8:51Speaker 4: when they're talking about guys that they're gonna be tough
- 8:53Speaker 4: decisions and if they know they're gonna cut good players,
- 8:56Speaker 4: he may be top of the list.
- 8:57Speaker 5: And both of these guys that we've talked about and
- 8:58Speaker 5: the guy that you're gonna talk about have all made
- 9:00Speaker 5: place consistently on the practice field every day. It's not
- 9:03Speaker 5: like they were just flashes. These are guys they're going
- 9:05Speaker 5: to try to get through to the practice squad, or
- 9:07Speaker 5: if they don't think they can, maybe they can flip
- 9:09Speaker 5: them to a team that's receiver needy for a late
- 9:12Speaker 5: round pick.
- 9:12Speaker 1: They're so loaded at the wide receiver position. That's why
- 9:15Speaker 1: we're keeping this all wide receiver position. We feel like
- 9:17Speaker 1: those first five spots are locked up. I think We've
- 9:19Speaker 1: moved Parker Washington into that five spot at least on
- 9:22Speaker 1: my list. So the sixth spot is what we're looking at.
- 9:24Speaker 1: And as you mentioned, special team is gonna be huge.
- 9:25Speaker 1: That's why I picked Tim Jones for mine, just because
- 9:27Speaker 1: I feel like he's been here, he's contributed on special
- 9:30Speaker 1: teams before, and they know what he's capable of doing,
- 9:32Speaker 1: and he saw him doing that in the first preseason
- 9:34Speaker 1: game against Dallas, and I think, unfortunately, that's what's gonna
- 9:37Speaker 1: come down to.
- 9:37Speaker 2: If you had an extra spot, maybe you get one.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Of the taller wide receivers and still that role that
- 9:41Speaker 1: you don't have, but I don't know if they have
- 9:43Speaker 1: space for it right now. You might try and sneak
- 9:45Speaker 1: somebody onto the practice squad, but as we mentioned, it's
- 9:47Speaker 1: a very deep position group, so a lot of these
- 9:49Speaker 1: people are gonna get picked up by somebody else.
- 9:51Speaker 5: And you know, John, it's not every year that they
- 9:52Speaker 5: keep four tight ends, but when you may that room,
- 9:55Speaker 5: they're going to keep all four of those guys. So
- 9:57Speaker 5: it's not like you could even have a seventh receiver,
- 10:00Speaker 5: any tight ends, or you know, three running backs.
- 10:02Speaker 3: The numbers just don't work for it. Based on the
- 10:04Speaker 3: other position groups.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Now, I think Tim Jones makes the team, and I
- 10:06Speaker 4: think he's gonna be. If he doesn't, he might be
- 10:09Speaker 4: their toughest cut because they love him.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Absolutely, all right, stay with us, guys. We're gonna come
- 10:13Speaker 1: back get some ozone mail bag questions with the wives,
- 10:15Speaker 1: John Oser, and then we'll get you some more details
- 10:18Speaker 1: about joint practice.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Field's Auto Group Jacksonville.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Step up to Luxury Fields Auto dot Com.
- 10:28Speaker 2: We are live in Alan Park, Michigan for Jags am
- 10:32Speaker 2: on this Wednesday.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Things are heating up a little, but it's still nowhere
- 10:35Speaker 1: near Jacksonville, so it's still a little bit comfy.
- 10:37Speaker 2: John.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I know you enjoy this environment, and of course we
- 10:41Speaker 1: want your wisdom as we've got a couple of ozone
- 10:43Speaker 1: mail bag questions.
- 10:43Speaker 2: As the viewers always have wisdom you receive.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Why are you kissing up to him?
- 10:50Speaker 1: We're gonna start off with zingis from Duval Great love this.
- 10:53Speaker 1: It seems to have been a while since a Jaguars
- 10:55Speaker 1: defender outplayed his contract or draft position. Do you have
- 10:59Speaker 1: any candidates for this year to break out? I'm hoping
- 11:01Speaker 1: for Cisco.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Yeah, as this reader noted, we cut the question down
- 11:06Speaker 4: for space Devon Hamilton started to do that. Oh yeah,
- 11:10Speaker 4: first of all, Roll Roberts and Harrison maybe a little bit.
- 11:13Speaker 4: He got a new deal this year, yeah, and out
- 11:16Speaker 4: played the one that he originally signed. Cisco's a good
- 11:19Speaker 4: choice for this. But since the reader mentioned this, I'll
- 11:23Speaker 4: go ahead and say, maybe maybe you Seer Abdula, who
- 11:28Speaker 4: I mean kind of on this week. I don't know
- 11:30Speaker 4: if he was asking about rookies per se, but you
- 11:32Speaker 4: see it seems like a guy that can get you
- 11:35Speaker 4: four or five sacks, that can get you impact. Cisco's
- 11:38Speaker 4: the best choice because as a third round pick, you
- 11:41Speaker 4: feel like he's got a chance to be a real
- 11:42Speaker 4: breakout guy.
- 11:43Speaker 3: B Ryan, so I'd go with either of those two.
- 11:44Speaker 3: You probably somebody out, No.
- 11:45Speaker 5: I mean, I think you're absolutely right on Cisco because
- 11:47Speaker 5: I think from that Kansas City game in the regular
- 11:49Speaker 5: season on he was a real force and offenses had
- 11:53Speaker 5: to know where number five was.
- 11:55Speaker 3: So I think he's the perfect choice.
- 11:57Speaker 5: And Abdula, you could say so far just Antonio Johnson, Right, sure,
- 12:01Speaker 5: two guys just like, what were they doing available so late?
- 12:04Speaker 5: Because clearly their playmaxers, Well, they're there that late? Because
- 12:07Speaker 5: Scout said Abdullah's too short. I don't know what the
- 12:11Speaker 5: story is with Johnson. He has freakish physical abilities, and
- 12:14Speaker 5: when you watch that kid, you're like, they can't They're
- 12:17Speaker 5: gonna have to find a way to get him on
- 12:18Speaker 5: the field.
- 12:19Speaker 3: He's too good.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I wonder, how is the only reason I didn't
- 12:22Speaker 4: choose him? You wonder where they can find a role
- 12:25Speaker 4: for him? You know where they're gonna find a rule
- 12:27Speaker 4: for Abdullah, a role for aub dulan third down guy.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Lots of young options hasn't been talking about, especially showing
- 12:32Speaker 1: out in those preseason games. And then our other final
- 12:34Speaker 1: question for you from Ozone today is from Michael from
- 12:37Speaker 1: Orange Park, Florida. He says, what makes you so sure
- 12:40Speaker 1: that the Jaguars will be good this year? Well?
- 12:42Speaker 4: I chose this question because after a preseason game, everybody,
- 12:46Speaker 4: you know kind of nitpicks and oh they didn't do this,
- 12:49Speaker 4: they didn't do this, Trevor had an interception, or I
- 12:51Speaker 4: didn't like this from the defense.
- 12:53Speaker 3: I think it's.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Important rite out right now to remember the big picture,
- 12:56Speaker 4: and that's the you know they're gonna be better? Or
- 13:00Speaker 4: because you have any any thought that the offense isn't
- 13:02Speaker 4: gonna be good. Ryan, No, So no, the defense, I
- 13:06Speaker 4: don't think men, they're gonna be as good as last
- 13:08Speaker 4: year to me, because they bring everybody back.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Carl was gonna be better.
- 13:11Speaker 4: So I think rather than focus on every little thing
- 13:14Speaker 4: that worries you, remember Trevor's doing this, the offense, you
- 13:19Speaker 4: continue to do this. I don't know what their record
- 13:21Speaker 4: will be after five games, but they feel to me
- 13:23Speaker 4: like a team it's going to be in ascension throughout
- 13:25Speaker 4: the whole regular season, so I don't doubt they're gonna
- 13:27Speaker 4: be good.
- 13:28Speaker 5: Let's use this as a reminder. Preseason games are rarely
- 13:31Speaker 5: game planned, right.
- 13:32Speaker 3: I didn't have a game plan for that one last week.
- 13:35Speaker 5: They're going in looking at players and situational matchups and
- 13:38Speaker 5: how guys play next to each other in the lines.
- 13:41Speaker 4: You can't be sure you get guys reps.
- 13:44Speaker 3: That's so right.
- 13:45Speaker 5: It has nothing to do with how they're gonna play
- 13:47Speaker 5: in the regular season. In fact, it's a far cry
- 13:50Speaker 5: from when they game plan and the way they're gonna
- 13:52Speaker 5: play because they don't want to show anybody anything. Preseason games,
- 13:56Speaker 5: ladies and gentlemen, are about evaluation, not about the big picture.
- 14:01Speaker 5: So my feeling of why they're gonna be good. Number
- 14:04Speaker 5: sixteen is a really big reason why. Oh and zero
- 14:09Speaker 5: gives more room in the passing game, and this whole
