- 2:31to be re elected in that position. He joins us now via the Bigley
- 2:35Piggy Wiggly Hotline. Christian, good morning, Welcome to the show. Hey
- 2:38Dave, thanks for having me, Thank you for being here. Now.
- 2:39You're a current member of the board, as I said, and you hope
- 2:43to be re elected to that position. But before we get there, let's
- 2:46talk about let's talk about you. Give us the bio on Christian Wells.
- 2:51Okay, I was born and raised in Putnam County. I've listed here pretty
- 2:53much on my life. I'm a general contractor. My wife is a teacher.
- 2:58I have two kids. They both go to Winfield. My wife and
- 3:01I both graduated from Winfield. My daughter is a sophomore Winfield High School and
- 3:06my son's a sixth grader at Winfield Middle School. We are heavily involved in
- 3:10church, in sports, and don't know what to do most evenings because we're
- 3:15so busy. So a lot of parents would echo that. Talk about your
- 3:19time on the board, talk about what the experience has been like. Well,
- 3:23it's been a good experience, I think, I mean, I hope
- 3:24it's been a great experience for the teachers and students of Putnam County. During
- 3:29my time on the board, I've been part of the voting to make Putnam
- 3:31County teachers the highest paded teachers in the state. We've also voted to extend
- 3:36healthcare into retirement for our teachers. I recently received the Teachers Union, the
- 3:42AFT Putnam Teachers Union endorsement, And if everybody remember, back during COVID,
- 3:47we were the first county to get our kids back to school. So I
- 3:52felt like I feel like my time on the board has been fruitful. Really
- 3:57love to get the opportunity to get back on there again four years. You
- 4:00know, Christian Putnham County is known for some of the best schools in the
- 4:03state period, and I mean seriously. As you know, people actually moved
- 4:08to Putnham County in many cases just so their kids can go to the schools
- 4:12in Puttnham County. We're seeing it already with New Core. You're on the
- 4:15ground there. What makes Puttinham County schools so good and so appealing to parents?
- 4:19Well, I believe we've done a good job over the years of getting
- 4:24the best teachers. You know, greatness are iron sharpens iron. You get
- 4:29great teachers in here, everything gets better. Everything gets better. And as
- 4:33you know, all ships rise with the rising tide. But as we continue
- 4:39to get better teachers in here, more and more good teachers want to get
- 4:41in here. And people see that, they recognize that as a great education
- 4:45here in Putnam County, so they want to send their kids here. You
- 4:48know, one of my son's best friends is a New Core kid moved in
- 4:51here from Indiana. Now his dad drives all the way from from Rocky Step
- 4:57here in Putnam County, all the way out to Mason County for job.
- 5:00They could have gone to Mason County schools, but they chose Bututton County for
- 5:02a reason. That's because we have the best school system. Baby, I'm
- 5:05one on five. Baby line is brought to part by Hustin's Pizza this month
- 5:09that your favorite Huston's get a large Aten nach Pepperoni pizza and an order of
- 5:12sudimand bites with icing only twenty ninety nine tot your favorite Huston locations. Christian
- 5:16I mentioned this ye yesterday with someone who's running for election for the board in
- 5:19Kanawa County. It's not easy being a board member now, I mean,
- 5:24you had COVID to deal with. You mentioned that earlier then charter schools,
- 5:28more parents choosing either charter, homeschooling, or anything other in some cases than
- 5:31traditional public schools, high school transfer role. It's a lot to navigate as
- 5:36a school board member. Now, yeah, it really is. I mean
- 5:40I've joked about that that my time on the board has been the most tumultuous
- 5:45time ever. I mean last time in campaigning this year has been much different
- 5:49than it us four years ago because I was campaigning right in the middle of
- 5:53COVID, so you really couldn't give speeches. You couldn't visit people, You
- 5:56couldn't go to or to door, none of the things that are traditionally done
- 6:00during a campaign. We're able to be done four years ago. I've been
- 6:03able to do that this year. But yeah, well we have we have
- 6:05tons of challenges. Uh, not only that we've already faced, and I
- 6:10think we've done a pretty good job of facing them. But we've got a
- 6:13lot coming. You know, the craziness and the uh, the ideology of
- 6:17the left that keeps slapping us in the face. It's gonna it's gonna hit
- 6:21us here in Putnam County. It's going to hit our entire state. I
- 6:24think it already has, as you've seen in some places. So we have
- 6:28to keep good conservative folks on the board and uh and keep fighting the good
- 6:31fight. What do you hear from parents or grandparents when you're out on the
- 6:38campaign trail, Christian, what are they telling you? Well, you know,
- 6:42it's weird, it's mixed. You're always going to get some some complaints
- 6:46and some some issues, but mostly it's been positive. It's been keep up
- 6:50the good work. It's it's it's been pass on the back, and I
- 6:55greatly appreciate that. I mean It is a it's a tough and relatively thankless
- 6:59job. But you know, I've I've I'm invested in this county. I've
- 7:02got two kids, I've got a stake in this game, and I've got
- 7:05two kids that I got to watch out for along with everybody else's kids.
- 7:10You know, we we've got to provide the best possible outcome for our students
- 7:14and our teachers. So but but most of the feedback has been positive.
- 7:18I'm really appreciative of that. You mentioned that your wife is a teacher.
- 7:23What kind of insight does that give you in being married to an educator?
- 7:30Because I mean, I know, when you come home with the end of
- 7:31the day, maybe the last thing you want to speak about is education.
- 7:35But but what kind of insight do you get from your wife. Well,
- 7:41she's a preschool teacher Winfield Baptist, and she could teach in elementary schools,
- 7:47but she's she's chosen to stay. She started there and she's chosen to stay
- 7:50there. It's tough, man, I tell you, I just I have
- 7:55an appreciation for what teachers do after talking to her every day about the challenges
- 8:01she faces, and it's everything from parents to students to you have it,
- 8:05but whatever that is. But she genuinely loves it. She loves the kids.
- 8:11She would miss anything that, you know, if she ever left the
- 8:16teaching profession, she'd miss terribly what she gets from those students. There's so
- 8:18much reward in it. So the inside I get is how rewarding it can
- 8:24be, but how tough it really is. And to support our teachers right
- 8:28and teaching, whether it's on the public school level or a private school or
- 8:33whatever. I mean, teachers are asked to do so much more Christian than
- 8:37what they were when I was in school. I mean, they're now in
- 8:41addition to you know a's and b's and x's and o's whatever, they're also
- 8:46social workers, they're also dietitians. There are also so many other things because
- 8:52of society now, the way society is absolutely and then also back in our
- 8:56day when we were in school, there was no social media. So now
- 9:01I see parents going online all the time and complaining and criticizing these teachers,
- 9:05and that's awful to see in my opinion. You know, whether it's deserved
- 9:11or not, these teachers deserve our support and they're not ever going to make
- 9:16every right decision every time but we have to support them. We have to
- 9:20do whatever we can to try to help these folks because it is such a
- 9:22thankless job at times. We're talking with Christian Wells again Canada for reelection to
- 9:26the Putnham County Board of Education. Do you have a website or social media
- 9:30or anything like that you'd like to plug? I don't currently, No,
- 9:33I've never set that up. I'm on Facebook, though. I put everything
- 9:37out there on Facebook that I can and hopefully everybody will like and share it.
- 9:41All right, this is the final thirty, as I call it,
- 9:43Christian. Why should someone vote to re elect Christian Wells to the Putnam County
- 9:46Board of Education. Well, if you are a true conservative, you want
- 9:52to keep conservative values on the school board, I'm the only choice in my
- 9:58district. I would also recommend you cat Field. But if you want true
- 10:01conservative voices, those are your guys. All right, appreciate your vote well,
- 10:05Christian. I appreciate you taking time at your schedule to be here.

- 16:33layer of the court system in the state and it's the newest position on the
- 16:36ballot. Ryan White wants to join the Courty joints us Now, Ryan,
- 16:40good morning, Welcome to the show. Morning Dave, thank you. First
- 16:44explaining the Intermediate Court of Appeals. How does it work, who uses it,
- 16:47etc. Well, the Intermediate Court is a new court that was created
- 16:49about three years ago by the West Virginia Legislature and it's been in operation for
- 16:55about two years. It takes civil appeals, it takes family law, all
- 17:00workers comp and administrative appeals. So the last three I mentioned are come directly
- 17:07from those specific courts. It doesn't go to the circuit court anymore more so
- 17:11it has it's added appeal for people that didn't want to take it to the
- 17:17Supreme Court and basically lessen the load on the circuit court so that they can
- 17:22run more efficiently. It was and I don't I hate to use the term
- 17:26controversial because that means that it that almost rings to the fact that you know,
- 17:30some people didn't wanter whatever. But I will say that there was a
- 17:33lot of discussion that went into it when this was created, correct. I
- 17:37think this is certain people didn't think it was a wise use of tax payer
- 17:42money to do. But the fact of the matter is we're the we were
- 17:45the largest state. They didn't have an intermediate court of appeals. So in
- 17:48my opinion, it's it's not a bad thing to have. Why do you
- 17:52want to be a part of it? Well, I want to be a
- 17:55part of the intermyt Court of Appeals because West Virginia needs a fair, un
- 17:59biased, balanced judge that will follow the rule of law and protect people's constitutional
- 18:03rights. And I believe I'm the candidate that can do that. I have
- 18:07the experience through my Well let me start, I was yeah, that's gonna
- 18:12be The next question is your bio. So yeah, so I was.
- 18:17I went to law school at w College of Law in two thousand and five.
- 18:21I'm a native West Virginian and i was a clerk for Judge Goodwin back
- 18:27in two thousand and five to two thousand and six down here, and then
- 18:32I was a lawyer for Jackson Kelly for six years. In that time,
- 18:37I worked for the legislature, the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate Economic Development
- 18:41Committee for three sessions. And then I started a law firm with my dad
- 18:48back in twenty twelve. Since I've been working at that law firm, White
- 18:53Law Office has since then. In twenty fourteen, I ran for a school
- 19:00board and was elected school board and I ran for reelection two times since then,
- 19:07and I had to resign in order to run for this. I was
- 19:10president of the school board. I was elected president of the school board by
- 19:14my peers. I was also on the school Board Association West Virginia and was
- 19:18elected the president of that as well. I've served on many nonprofit boards throughout
- 19:23West Virginia and the state, and my law practice is primarily building West Virginia
- 19:30up and making sure West Virginia has the best success it can with infrastructure building
- 19:33bringing jobs to West Virginia, and I've practiced all throughout the state doing that.
- 19:37What were some of the things maybe that I always like to ask this
- 19:41of any political candidate that's held one office and is aspiring to get to another
- 19:45one. Were there things that you learned in your time serving on the school
- 19:51board that you think will serve you well an intermediate Court of Appeals? Oh?
- 19:55Definitely. I mean in the school board, especially the last ten years,
- 20:00there's been some difficult decisions that need to be made and I I was
- 20:03part of that, and I had to make some tough decisions. I mean,
- 20:07I didn't make everybody happy, but you're not going to make everybody happy.
- 20:11So I think I showed that I was very uh even keeled, and
- 20:15listened to people and UH and could take uh and and was not someone even
- 20:21tempered and did not uh did not try to impose my will on anybody.
- 20:26So that's something I learned. Also, UH, the court is UH is
- 20:32a governmental entity. People forget about that. They think that you only make
- 20:34decisions, but it's also a governmental entity that has a budget. And there's
- 20:37also administrative stuff. So my uh, my experience on the school board will
- 20:42also help with running the actual court and making sure that we we are within
- 20:47budget and that the employees are are are are going well. It's a well
- 20:52hopefully that it will be a well rowned machine. But Dave Allen Shilling five,

- 21:14Dot net because what you don't know can't hurt you. What is the average
- 21:18day like for somebody that's on the Intermediate Court of Appeals. Well, from
- 21:22my discussion with the judges, the average day is you're you're reading a lot
- 21:26of briefs from the attorneys and you're you're making sure that you're working with your
- 21:33staff to ensure that you you make decisions. Now, they do have oral
- 21:38arguments, but those are once or twice a month. Only about ten percent
- 21:42of those cases go for O and so for oral argument, you're actually have
- 21:48the two attorneys argue. It's about it's about five minutes each and you listen
- 21:53to them and then you're you're also compiled with the other judges as well,
- 22:00talking with them and making sure that they have you guys are focusing on the
- 22:06right issues when you're talking about the cases. How's the campaign been so far?
- 22:11I mean, anytime that you're going for anything of a judicial type,
- 22:14you know, whether it's what you're doing or whatever, it's a little bit
- 22:17different, you know than run for house or running for sheriff or mayor or
- 22:19whatever house. The campaign been. Campaign has been great. I've been all
- 22:22throughout West Virginia and people I talk to because this is this encompasses the entire
- 22:29state. You know, this is not divided like into districts or anything like
- 22:32that. You're you know, you're serving make Wand as well as Martinsburg.
- 22:36Correct. Yeah, Yeah, it's it's a statewide election. It's the first
- 22:40election for the Interviewing Court, and a lot of a lot of me going
- 22:42around talking to people is explaining exactly what the enemy of quarter like you're doing
- 22:47today because most people don't even know what it is. So yeah, I'm
- 22:52going throughout the state. I've been to Martinsburg, UH, Morgantown, Clarksburg,
- 22:56Wheeling, we areting uh just talking to people and making sure they know
- 23:02backway and making sure they know what it is and how it is important to
- 23:06everyone's life right now, and just provide awareness of my candidacy. And people
- 23:11have been very supportive and like, what I like to say if you are
- 23:15elected to the disposition? What what do you hope to do in the position?
- 23:22What would you like to see the hobage? I mean, it's relatively
- 23:23new. It's not like you're dealing with the Supreme Court, where you know
- 23:27you have decades and decades of history. So what would you like to do
- 23:30with a complet if you if you win? Well, if I'm elected,
- 23:33I'm the first thing I'm going to do. I won't take office until January
- 23:36one, So the first thing I'm going to do is, well, I'm
- 23:38going to continue to work out my law practice and continue to wrap up my
- 23:41law practice. I'm going to go and start talking to people and to certain
- 23:48entities throughout the state and make sure that I'm aware of what they need on
- 23:55the court, for example, workers' comp and and unemployment, and I can
- 24:00go and talk to the people that do that type of stuff and make sure
- 24:03that I get a better understanding of what they what they need with the court,
- 24:10and same with family law. I'll be doing that in the meantime.
- 24:14But what I want to accomplish is I want to make sure that the court
- 24:18continues to be expedient and people get their cases hurt in an expedient manner.
- 24:22I want to make sure that the cases that we set some good precedent.
- 24:27That's one thing that's advantageous for an intermedi at Court of Appeals is that you
- 24:30have good precedent that lawyers can use and provide more certainty. So I want
- 24:36to make sure that that that precedent is solid, rock solid, and within
- 24:41the bounds of our law and constitution too. You have a website or social

- 30:25Chris, good morning. Where are you this morning? Morning? Dave.
- 30:29I'm in Huntington now, but on my way to Bridgeport, Clarksburg and
- 30:32Morgantown for the rest of the afternoon. So moving a million miles an hour
- 30:36and having a blast. One week from today is when we'll know who will
- 30:41move on. How are you feeling about it? You know what, I've
- 30:45spent fifteen sixteen months traveling around the state get to know people, and it's
- 30:49been an absolute spectacular experience. One of the things that I've learned is is
- 30:53that people that are dying for a conservative Christian business guy to run things.
- 30:57And that's exactactly what I am. I mean, I'm a business owner,
- 31:02I'm a boxer, I'm a bison farmer and build twenty six businesses, have
- 31:06seven hundred employees. And Dave, if I ran my businesses the way the
- 31:08government spends our tax dollars, I'd be broke. And the most appealing thing
- 31:12to voters when I talk to him is that I go about this with a
- 31:15plan, and it's really really simple. On day one, we're going to
- 31:18audit every single dime. On day two, we're going to make sure and
- 31:22implement drug testing for welfare benefits because your tax dollars should never go to make
- 31:27drug dealers rich. And it also allows us to identify problems people to need
- 31:32help, get them the help that they need, and also direct resources to
- 31:34the kids, because that really is what this is all about. And day
- 31:38three, we're going to get all the lawmakers in the room without special interest
- 31:41and without lobbyists, and we're going to get rid of the income tax.
- 31:45And then that's when West Virginia is going to take off. Because we're surrounded
- 31:49by five states Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and that
- 31:56doesn't include DC which is nearest too, and all of them are high tax
- 32:00and all of them have an income tax. We get rid of the income
- 32:02tax, we are going to take off because that gives us a competitive advantage.
- 32:07You talked about that, and again we're talking with Chris Miller, Republican
- 32:10candidate for governor. You've talked about the elimination of the income tax, and
- 32:15you say that on day three that you're going to get everybody together to work
- 32:19on that. I mean, can can that be done on? I mean,
- 32:22does I mean, is it that simple? If it's that simple,
- 32:24why hasn't it already been done? You know. So that's the reason why
- 32:29I say, day one, we're going to audit every dime because there's a
- 32:31lot of waste inside of government. You know, We're going to make sure
- 32:35and find all the three hundred dollars hammers and every piece of equipment that's disappeared
- 32:37out of the back door to the Department of Highways, and then we're going
- 32:40to make sure that we have a system that manages the people's tax dollars in
- 32:45a much more efficient way, debuting me, your taxpayers. Everybody out there
- 32:49listening is taxpayers, and the government wastes our money, and that's one of
- 32:52the definite things we got to stop. So you find all the waste and
- 32:55you get rid of the income tax. Wham, you can just take off.
- 33:00Talking to Chris Miller again, Republican candidate for governor of the Dave Alance
- 33:04showing five ayde line brought to you ampartment by fresh Air. They'll change those

- 33:14twenty four hour emergency service available visit fresh Air Filters dot US are called three
- 33:17zero four four four zero one one zero four for fresh air because everyone deserves
- 33:22fresh air. Let's talk about the drug testing of welfare recipients. That's something
- 33:25that I don't think if you did a poll, I think the majority of
- 33:30people would say, Okay, I'm fine with that. But across the country,
- 33:36the courts have had a tendency to say a little bit different about that.
- 33:38How will you tackle that? Because it will it will go to court.
- 33:42Well, you gotta have good attorneys and where you can control stuff,
- 33:44in particular to the state level. And this is just one of the many
- 33:46examples of all the waste of our tax dollars that people are tired of.
- 33:51We don't want our tax dollars going like you and me are susceptible to drug
- 33:54tests at anytime, All of our employees are susceptible to that. Anybody in
- 33:58the Union has to pass drug to work. Why in the world will we
- 34:01let people that aren't working, that we're paying to stay at home have to
- 34:05go through something totally different we had a whole them accountable, just like everybody
- 34:07else. And it doesn't ever ever benefit people to use drugs. And I
- 34:12don't want my tax dollars days. I don't want my tax dollars to go
- 34:15to make drug dealers rich. And I also don't want my tax dollars to
- 34:19be soaked up by people that are using drugs as opposed to taking care of
- 34:22their own kids. It is a principal thing and it's worth fighting for,
- 34:25it seems Chris, the no one this election cycle likes the polls unless it
- 34:30shows them in the lead. Where are you on the polls so far?
- 34:36Well? So, elections are always about the people, and I think the
- 34:38political class forgets that. And I'm a very, very very hard worker and
- 34:44all I've done for the past sixteen months is work and work and work and
- 34:46talk to as many people as many voters as I can, And that is
- 34:50what elections are always about. At the end of the day, It's about
- 34:52the voters, and the voters are going to speak, and we know that
- 34:55voters are looking for a conservative, Christian business guy to run things. They
- 35:00the fact that we're going about it with a plan. You already heard our
- 35:02three day plan, and they also like they're dying for something different, because
- 35:07Mandave, we are dead lasting everything from economy to education. The only thing
- 35:12we're first placing in is the number of grandparents raising grandkids and also cancer rates.
- 35:16We've got this good old boy system that's been running our state for far
- 35:21too long, and people are dying to have a seat at the table.
- 35:23And so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna make the outsiders the insiders,
- 35:28and the insiders the outsiders, and make sure everybody's got a seat at the
- 35:30table. And then we're gonna start running government like a business. We're going
- 35:35to create an economy that thrives. Going to do everything I can to get
- 35:37wokeism completely and utterly kicked out of our school systems because I've got an eleven
- 35:43year old daughter and I don't want her share in a locker room with a
- 35:45biological mail. And you start doing this stuff, you start speaking from the
- 35:50heart and telling the truth. People are dying for that man, they really
- 35:53are. And so I like where we're sitting. I like our chances,
- 35:57and I have faith in the voters. It's been so chris of a nasty
- 36:00campaign between the leading for yourself, Mac Warner, Patrick Morrison, more capital.
- 36:05Apparently apparently no one's heard of Ronald Reagan's command, but that dal shall
- 36:08not speak ill of other Republicans. Are you surprised about the level of nasty
- 36:12that's been in this Republican primary? Oh yeah, absolutely. And there's about
- 36:16fifteen million dollars an out of state attack money that's been placed on me from
- 36:22a Club for Growth, all supporting Patrick Morrisey. And this is the perfect
- 36:25example of what people are sick and tired of. We're tired of being being
- 36:30like sold and we've been sold down the river in the opiate settlements, We've
- 36:34been sold down the river when it comes to negotiating with outside businesses, and
- 36:37now we're being sold down the river to outside special interest and this is the
- 36:43big deal. We need to take these outsiders like business owners, farmers,
- 36:49educators, laborers, everybody, and we need to take all the insiders,
- 36:55the special interest, to the lobbying and that kind of stuff and make them
- 36:59the outside and make sure that everybody's got a seat at the table. And
- 37:02that's how that's how you run good government. Right there, Chris Bore,
- 37:07we let you go when you were recording the famous TV commercials, and let's
- 37:10face it, your TV commercials are a big part of why your dealerships have
- 37:14been such a big success over the last few years. Did you ever think,
- 37:17of the back of your mind, Okay, maybe at some point these
- 37:21may come back to haunt me, or was it just, hey, this
- 37:24is just some guys having fun trying to sell some cars. Did you ever
- 37:28think it would be used against you? Well, it's one of the best
- 37:30things about people in West Virginia is everybody's got a sense of Hubert. We
- 37:34have some of the best people. I begin to wonder about that sometimes,
- 37:36Yeah, go ahead, Well, we got a great sense of humor,
- 37:38man, and people the voters in West Virginia know that. The people that
- 37:42have seen those commercials for so long, they laugh, they get it,
- 37:45they understand, and it's what we do. We strive to entertain, and
- 37:47so I'm not worried about that in the slightest. Now, yeah, they
- 37:52do try to twist it into something that it isn't, but hey, voters
- 37:54are smart. They figure this stuff out, and we always have a good
- 37:58time. I strive to entertain with the automotive commercials and what I'm doing with
- 38:01the political stuff is. I want to make sure and send good messages that
- 38:04come from my heart to the people in West Virginia so they know exactly where
- 38:07I stand. Because people are dying for the truth and they're dying to know
- 38:10what really is real. And at the end of the day, West Virginia
- 38:15has an incredible opportunity in front of it. We just need to run government
- 38:17more like a business. Start auditing every dime, treat tax payers like customers,
- 38:22get rid of the income tax. And here's the icing on the cake.
- 38:27Dave, being a business guy, I think assets, liabilities equity.
- 38:30When you outline West Virginia's assets, all down, all the coal, all
- 38:35the natural gas, the potential for rar earth elements were uncovered in the south.
- 38:38We've got more potential to produce power through geothermal heat than Saudi Arabia can
- 38:44generate, and BTUs and natural gas, and we have an incredible amount of
- 38:46water. You get rid of the income tax, You leverage all these resources
- 38:52to drive down the cost of power by seventy percent. You use that for
- 38:55the foundation of all of our economic growth and development. We're going to take
- 38:59all But then you think about Jim and Susie Adkins they're on Social Security and
- 39:04they're seventy years old. You cut their power bill by seventy percent. You've
- 39:07done something incredibly impactful for them too. And that, in my mind,
- 39:12is what good government is. There's no reason why we're not the richis state
- 39:15in the country. The only reason is is because we let politicians and attorneys
- 39:19and bureaucrats run things as opposed to business guys. Look at what Trump was
- 39:22able to do in DC create one of the greatest economies on the history of
- 39:27planet Earth and we had no wars. Business guy and knows what he's doing.
- 39:30You let me get in charge of running the government. I'll work at
- 39:34a relentless rate. I'll run state government like a business and I'll do something
- 39:37for our people because I'm sick and tired of sitting back and watching politicians fail
- 39:43us over and over again. Every problem that we face is because of politicians.
- 39:47Everything. Everything can be solved if you just start creating an economy that
- 39:52thrives, get rid of the income tax, drive down the cost of power
- 39:57by seventy percent, audit every single time that we spend. Run government like
- 40:00a business, creating a comedy that thrives, and it solves the biggest problem
- 40:05we face because right now our biggest export is not our color or natural gas.
- 40:09Our biggest export is our kids. And that's the problem we have to
- 40:14solve at the end of the day, all right, Chris will wish you
- 40:15the best of like we'll talk again soon. Man, thanks a lot,

- 45:21this election, the Primier election is big on the judicial front as well.
- 45:24Lera Vanmeter is a family court judge Kna County hoping to be re elected.
- 45:29She joined us now in the par of mar Storre Studio. Good morning,
- 45:30welcome to the show. Good morning, Dave Allen, thanks for having me.
- 45:34Thank you. Do you prefer judge or your honor or? Lira or
- 45:37Lira is fine? Judge Lira? How about Judge Lera? How about that?
- 45:42Give us your bio, give us the background you key denkey So,
- 45:45I was born and raised in Mingo County and a Mingo County girl from Williamson
- 45:49Pierre. Wait a minute, hold it you pronounced it Williamson and not Wimson
- 45:52Wimson. Okay, all right, I'm a looking gay. So make sure
- 45:54you says all right? Got it? Go ahead, go ahead, go
- 45:57ahead, of course, born down there, of course, been in Kenall
- 46:00County now for quite a number of years, and I've practiced law here.
- 46:04Of course, I went to Virginia Tech undergrad. Please don't hold that against
- 46:07me. W Nation. Everybody's got to go somewhere exactly, went to WV
- 46:10law school, practiced in Virginia for a little bit, came back to Charleston,
- 46:15been practicing here ever since I married. My husband is Mark Kelly,
- 46:19who's a lawyer here in Charleston. Ray Wynn and Kelly, and we have
- 46:22four legged children rescue. We're real big into rescue animals. We have to
- 46:28rescue labs and some cats and that's pretty I'm on the Humane Society's Board of
- 46:32directors right now and involved in community and rescue when I can. And that's
- 46:37a big, big passion of mine. So that's kind of the background,
- 46:42and I can do more. Let's talk about your time on the court,
- 46:45Okay, all right, So you know I've been on the court. You
- 46:46know, we were elected in twenty sixteen. I took the bench the beginning
- 46:51of twenty seventeen. I took Jude Schneider's place. He had retired and unfortunately
- 46:55passed away before he got to enjoy any of his retirement. So I have
- 46:59been on the bed ever since, Family court's tough, tough, you know,
- 47:02for a lot of people who don't know what we do in family court.
- 47:05It's all the divorces, it is all the child custody and all the
- 47:07domestic violence petitions. They start in magic Core, but they end up in
- 47:10ours. So it's tough day, but it's been It's a good experience.
- 47:15I have a lot of experience being on the bench and dealing with these type
- 47:19of cases, but overall it's a tough job. And I think about this
- 47:23yesterday. Family Court judge is one of those positions that you don't need or
- 47:29maybe even don't even think about. Correct until you do. Correct, until
- 47:32it involves you or your family member or a close friend or something like that.
- 47:36Correct, and everybody's touched by it. What's interesting is is the a
- 47:39lot of the focus is on is on the big races, like the circuit
- 47:43court, particularly because that's where a lot of the money cases are and people
- 47:45that's in the public. A lot people don't think about family court, but
- 47:49Dave Allen, it matters. It matters who's on that bench because we deal
- 47:53with your children and your property, and sometimes it's not always in that order
- 47:58of importance to people, but that's what we deal with. So those are
- 48:00important issues. And I think the experience matters on the bench and having the
- 48:06knowledge and the experience to be able to listen to the cases, hear what
- 48:09people have to say, and make decisions within the law. And I would
- 48:14think in family court there's one, two, three, four, five sides
- 48:19to every possible story. Absolutely, And what people also don't realize is we
- 48:23don't make the law. You know, the legislature makes the law, and
- 48:27a lot of people don't like our decisions. And I get that nobody's happy
- 48:30walking out of family court, Dave Allen, I mean, no, it
- 48:34really isn't. So I think that they always say if everybody's mad, you're
- 48:37doing your job. Well, it's not your goal to meet people mad,
- 48:39but you know it is. It's tough decisions you have to make. But
- 48:43the legislature makes the law on what we have to do. So if you
- 48:46don't like what the law is, you got to go somewhere else and get
- 48:50that change up with the legislature, not us. So we do the best
- 48:52job we can. But again but you also have to remember our places arehesaus
- 48:57are closed, so you can't walk in my courtroom. You can't anything about
- 49:00my cases. I can't even defend myself to you about a case about something
- 49:05that maybe somebody's mad at me and they're talking about me in public. I
- 49:07can't even defend myself and say that's not what happened. And you have to
- 49:12remember I can only make my decisions based on what you tell me and what
- 49:15you bring in my court. And if you don't tell me and you don't
- 49:17give me all the facts, then I don't know, and I can only
- 49:22make my decision on what I hear in court. What is the biggest misconception
- 49:27in the public about family court? Oh gosh, the biggest misconception, Oh,
- 49:30you know what we hear a lot is well, Jane Doe, you
- 49:35did this in Jane Doe's case. How come you didn't do it in my
- 49:37case? What? Dave Allen? Every facts are different, So you think
- 49:40everybody thinks that they should get the kind of the same outcome, if you
- 49:43will, But the facts in every single case are different, and what they
- 49:46don't tell you is all the backstory. So I think there's all that big
- 49:51misconception of, well, everybody's going to you should get the same thing as
- 49:52John as your neighbor got. Well, your neighbor's facts are different than your
- 49:57facts and what evidence they bring the judge, so it's not the same.
- 50:00Do I think that's a big misconception as well in your time on the court,
- 50:06and maybe this predates you a little bit, but we can I know,
- 50:08I'm sure you study the history of the courts. What's the caseload,
- 50:12like I mean, compared to what it used to be, I would imagine
- 50:14with all the problems we have in society, that it's doubled or tripled.
- 50:16I could be wrong about that, Oh, Dave Allen, you couldn't be
- 50:20more wrong, And I do know, so I'll give you for instance,
- 50:22and I believe this has to be due to the decline in population half so
- 50:28like for have been more so like I would say, like say, I'm
- 50:30looking at a twenty fourteen fourteen d two thousand and something. We're barely hitting
- 50:37a thousand new cases a year. That totally surprises me. And that's why
- 50:39I learned things on this show every day, because I thought it would have
- 50:43been more with the event of drugs and all these others. So it's it's
- 50:46not no, not as far as new cases Now that doesn't mean people aren't
- 50:49coming back in their old cases, okay, and so we have mods and
- 50:52contempts. That's huge case load as well. But again, as far as
- 50:54the number goes of new cases, it's it's half. And that means modification
- 51:01modifications, like maybe you need to modify your child custody because remember anything with
- 51:05kids can be modified until the child is eighteen and out of the out gone.
- 51:08So you might want to modify your parenting plan. You might need to
- 51:10modify child support, or maybe somebody's not doing what they're supposed to be doing
- 51:15and you have to have a contempt. So we still have those ongoing all
- 51:17the time. You mean, he, do you have an email or social
- 51:21media? People can Facebook, it's reelect Judge van Meter. Judge Lira van
- 51:24Meter is on the Facebook and I think there's a website attached to it as
- 51:28well. All right, final thirty. Why should someone vote for Lira van
- 51:30Meter for reelection to Family Court because Lira of van Meter has the experience.
- 51:35I've been on the bench over seven years and Dave, I haven't always gotten
- 51:38it right. I've grown as a judge over the last seven years. I've
- 51:42changed and I think that comes with experience and knowledge, and I will continue
- 51:45to always do the best job I can. I will always try my hardest
- 51:50to get it right and do the best I can. But I am human.
- 51:52But when I lay my head down at night, I'll promise you I
- 51:55will have done the best job I can. All Right, I appreciate you
- 51:58being here. Hang out with me just one second a week close the show.
- 52:00Thanks a lot, Thanks Dave Allen Shir appreciate Ruch. We Gotta go.
