- 0:00Good morning and a very warm welcome to the Spy Trader podcast !
- 0:04It is 6 am on Wednesday , April 8th , 2026 , Pacific Time .
- 0:10I am your host , Penny Profitt , and I am so glad you could join me for your morning market update .
- 0:16We have a lot to cover today as we navigate what analysts are calling the Mature AI Expansion phase of our economy .
- 0:23Grab your favorite mug of coffee and let’s dive right into the numbers .
- 0:28The U.S.
- 0:29stock market is showing some serious resilience this morning .
- 0:33The S&P 500 , which many of you track through the SPY or VOO ETFs , is trading near the 6,200 level .
- 0:42That is an impressive 12 percent gain so far this year .
- 0:46What is really interesting is that the rally has finally started to move beyond just the big tech names .
- 0:52We are seeing a broadening into industrials and financials .
- 0:57In fact , the Financial Select Sector , or XLF , is seeing a major resurgence .
- 1:02Now that the yield curve has finally uninverted here in early 2026 , traditional banks are finally seeing those improved net interest margins they have been waiting for .
- 1:13Over in the techheavy Nasdaq100 , or QQQ , performance remains strong , led by the Technology Select Sector SPDR , known as XLK .
- 1:24But the conversation has changed .
- 1:26We are no longer just asking who is building the AI chips ; the market is now rewarding the companies that are actually making money from AI software and integration .
- 1:37Speaking of sectors on the move , healthcare is a massive standout this quarter .
- 1:42The Healthcare Select Sector , or XLV , is one of our top performers .
- 1:47This is being driven by pharmaceutical giants like Eli Lilly and Vertex .
- 1:52Between the scaling of obesity drug production and the first wave of AIdiscovered drugs hitting Phase Three trials , investor interest is through the roof .
- 2:02On the macroeconomic front , it looks like we have successfully stuck the soft landing .
- 2:08The Federal Reserve has held interest rates steady between 3.75 and 4.00 percent for three meetings in a row .
- 2:15Their old mantra of Higher for Longer has officially been replaced by Steady and Neutral .
- 2:21Inflation is sitting at 2.4 percent , which the Fed seems okay with given how much our productivity has grown .
- 2:28Plus , for the first time in a decade , bond ETFs like AGG and BND are looking very attractive with the 10year Treasury yield hovering around 4.2 percent .
- 2:40In company news , Nvidia made waves yesterday by announcing its Q1 2026 Edge AI initiative .
- 2:49They are moving into localized robotics and automotive AI , which keeps them as a primary driver for the XLK ETF .
- 2:57Apple is also in the spotlight with news about the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro .
- 3:03It features integrated neural processing units that allow it to run large language models locally on the device , which is giving consumer tech sentiment a nice boost .
- 3:14We are even seeing a growth spurt in utilities and broad market funds like VTI because of the transition toward domestic nuclear and modular reactors .
- 3:23Now , let’s talk about how to trade this environment .
- 3:27If you want a solid Core and Satellite approach , I recommend the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF , or VTI , as your core .
- 3:36It captures the midcap and smallcap companies that are finally catching a break with these stabilized interest rates .
- 3:43For your satellite growth , look at the Technology Select Sector SPDR , XLK .
- 3:49Companies like Microsoft and ServiceNow are seeing their margins expand thanks to those AI copilots .
- 3:55If you are looking for safety or income , keep an eye on the iShares 20 plus Year Treasury Bond ETF , or TLT .
- 4:04If the economy softens later this year , TLT provides a great hedge .
- 4:09And do not forget gold .
- 4:11Gold hit an alltime high of over 2,500 dollars an ounce this month , so holding some GLD is a smart move for portfolio diversification .
- 4:21For those looking for a value play , check out the Vanguard FTSE Developed Markets ETF , or VEA .
- 4:28European and Japanese markets are trading at a 30 percent discount compared to the U.S.
- 4:33right now .
- 4:34To sum up our recommendations for this April 8th : we are Bullish on SPY and suggest you hold or accumulate .
- 4:42We think QQQ is looking a bit overbought , so maybe trim your position slightly and wait for a 5 percent pullback .
- 4:49We have a Buy rating on XLV because that healthcare expansion is still undervalued .
- 4:54We recommend a Hold on GLD as a macro hedge , and a Buy on AGG to lock in those 4.5 percent effective yields .
- 5:02The market today is about tangible earnings , not just hype .
- 5:06Stay diversified , stay smart , and I will see you in a few hours for our next update .
- 5:12This is Penny Profitt for Spy Trader , wishing you a profitable Wednesday !
