Transcript
- 0:00Bonus time every year at the USTFCCCA convention down in
- 0:05December, we do a live podcast event where we sit down with
- 0:08coaches from around the country for 5:00-ish minutes and talk
- 0:11about a certain topic. This year, December of 2024, we
- 0:15sat down with coaches to talk about the NCAA.
- 0:18What's going on with the NIL transfer portal?
- 0:20Roster Caps. All those kind of good things,
- 0:22and there's some interesting feedback and tidbits from
- 0:25everyone who chose to sat down with us.
- 0:27So here we are, the audio version of that.
- 0:29You can catch the video version over on YouTube.
- 0:31Just search up the Gil Athletics podcast and look for our live
- 0:34events content and you'll find the three that we've done
- 0:3720/24/2023 2020 2 and we'll do it again in 2025.
- 0:43All right, here we go. We are live on Twitter and
- 0:46YouTube for the Gil Connections podcast bringing every year we
- 0:50just try to do something just a little bit fun, little bit more
- 0:52fun, just a little bit more adventurous.
- 0:55And this year, so we're gonna do the same air quotes there,
- 0:58right? We're gonna do a live podcast
- 0:59here for the next hour or so. We're gonna be on Twitter and on
- 1:02YouTube. And you might actually be
- 1:04listening to this in the future, listening to it on the podcast.
- 1:07That's how Podcast World works. And but this year we're going to
- 1:11have a theme. So each one of our guests that
- 1:13we have, we are going to ask them their opinions, their
- 1:16thoughts on all the changes that are going on in the NCAA.
- 1:20So we'll see. Everybody has the right to
- 1:23answer it on their own. They can say no comment, that's
- 1:25completely fine. And we'll veer off to somewhere
- 1:27else and and then some will have very in depth.
- 1:30And so we're going to start with one of my good friends here.
- 1:33I know I already reduced them, but I can introduce himself.
- 1:35Introduce yourself, my friend. Yeah.
- 1:37I'm Blake Bolden, Franklin P Johnson, Director of the Drake
- 1:40Relays. Thrilled to be here with you,
- 1:41Mike, and thrilled to be here at the Coaches Convention, STFCCCA.
- 1:48As everyone can hear, the energy in the background is palpable.
- 1:51There's a slight roar pretty much from the lobby, the JW all
- 1:55the way over to the Ritz Carlton and a lot of fun.
- 1:58This. Week yeah, I love it.
- 1:59I wish sometimes we could change the camera around and show all
- 2:01the people that are here man, it is a lot of fun and honestly,
- 2:04you know, you've heard me say this before, I consider this
- 2:06week my Super Bowl. I mean like I just love this
- 2:09entire week of hair down. No athletes to have to worry
- 2:12about. Actually, they're all worried
- 2:14about their athletes, but there's nothing going on on the
- 2:16track that they're concerned well.
- 2:17And nobody gets on a plane to come here without first ensuring
- 2:20their athletes are home for the fall.
- 2:22They're so they can entrust that they're that the athletes are
- 2:25with their parents or families or even still on campus, but in
- 2:27good hands and just an exhale after a false.
- 2:31You know, for distance. Coaches with cross country and
- 2:34then Boston and now yeah, the the the event areas other than
- 2:39distance have maybe done a little bit of a test at the end
- 2:41of the season, but now it's just exhale till probably January 2nd
- 2:45or 3rd. Speaking of a test, you know, as
- 2:48a background in distance yourself pretty good, Miller, if
- 2:51I remember correctly. Yeah, Thank you.
- 2:53It's really interesting and it's been going on for a while, but
- 2:56just seems to have more hype here lately.
- 2:58The the Boston meet after cross country man, holy cow.
- 3:01Well, and. Every year the distance runners
- 3:03head there and they set some incredible performance, new
- 3:06collegiate record, something that you just can't believe.
- 3:09And then the following and everyone says, wow, is it ever
- 3:11going to be faster? And then, of course, the
- 3:13following year. Yeah, next year.
- 3:15Right. Exactly.
- 3:16Exactly. Well, I love what they're doing
- 3:17up there. All right, Blake, So, you know,
- 3:18you're in the hot seat. We're talking about the
- 3:20incidentally changes. There's a lot of things, a lot
- 3:22of ways that question can go. NIL roster caps, the demise of
- 3:27the PAC 12. There's a lot of avenues I'm
- 3:29gonna let you pick. What do you think about all
- 3:30these changes going on with NCAA?
- 3:32Conference realignment, major issue, How athletes can monetize
- 3:36their name, image, likeness, huge issue.
- 3:40But really with all of these changes, I think the biggest
- 3:42thing in the sport of track and field, it is a time for
- 3:45unification. It's time for coaches to start
- 3:47to unify. It's time for the coaches
- 3:49association to lead a conversation, not just at the
- 3:52conference level across and then on campus with administration,
- 3:56but even in Capitol Hill with the Senate and, and Congress to
- 4:00really ensure there is legislation beyond the NCA that
- 4:04starts to protect the Olympic movement.
- 4:06And, and I know Sam was there at the end of the summer, August
- 4:09and September. And, and really I would
- 4:11encourage any coach or others that are listening to this to
- 4:14identify somebody that is listening to this right now
- 4:17knows someone that controls a congressman's calendar.
- 4:20And that person needs to reach out to Sam track coaches, you
- 4:24know, get get my call away in front of these people.
- 4:26Get some people. In Congress and in in the closed
- 4:29doors with Senators and Congressmen to start talking
- 4:32about how we can protect the Olympic movement with an
- 4:34emphasis on the oldest Olympic sport, track and field, and with
- 4:38is the best sport in the world. Agreed.
- 4:40How would you answer this question?
- 4:43How does this affect Cuz we talk a lot about the athletes, we
- 4:45talk a lot about coaching, we talk a lot about the
- 4:47conferences. What about again, still my
- 4:50favorite meet in the whole world, Drake Relays.
- 4:51How does this affect positively or negatively the Drake Relays?
- 4:54Yeah. And a lot of that remains to be
- 4:56seen. I mean some of it depends on
- 4:59investment, not just in scholarships and roster size,
- 5:02but how will travel be impacted for these traditional power for
- 5:07what will happen to the small colleges.
- 5:09I actually think and just me from where I sit, NAID 2D3 track
- 5:14and field might actually increase in significance on
- 5:16their. Campus.
- 5:17I think so. That, that's my inclination.
- 5:19Now it's a matter of how can we balance that with the power for
- 5:24schools really investing in Olympic development.
- 5:27In a. Way that we never have Wow with
- 5:29the with the central emphasis on American Olympic.
- 5:32Development. Yeah, I love.
- 5:33It so there's a there's a lot of balance to that and I don't know
- 5:36what all the opportunities are for our event, but I'm
- 5:40increasingly aware of the challenges.
- 5:42And. I think every one of us here
- 5:43faces challenges, but it is a time for unification.
- 5:46And I mean that across collegiate track and field, the
- 5:49NTA Coach Association, but also those other five CS.
- 5:53So we're talking about USA tracking or USA track and.
- 5:55Field right we're. Talking about running USA, we're
- 5:58talking about RCA, where everyone has to identify the
- 6:02significant role that the collegiate system plays in not
- 6:05just American track and field. Development no doubt no doubt,
- 6:09no doubt love it so remains to be seen and but you can you
- 6:13stand here today and guarantee we're having a Drake relays this
- 6:16year in 2025 we're. Going to have a Drake relays in
- 6:1825 and 20. Six.
- 6:20Yeah, babe, I. Mean.
- 6:20So in 2025, we're celebrating our 115th.
- 6:24Yeah, Congrats man. I love that we're a unique.
- 6:27Property in that we celebrate Iowa high school track and field
- 6:30we celebrate collegiate track and field at every level we also
- 6:33celebrate Olympians in a very real and authentic way but also
- 6:38masters athletes special Olympians the whole gamut.
- 6:42Matt you know it really is an opportunity for 10,000 fans to
- 6:47celebrate every athlete and what we need to do as a sport is
- 6:50recognize those assets, pen relays, Drake relays and others
- 6:56that attract fans. And instead of putting our best
- 6:59athletes in in some high performance meet where no one
- 7:02will see it either on television or in the stands, to identify
- 7:07those and work together to make sure that they survive and
- 7:09thrive in the. Next generation love it all
- 7:10right, so right now someone is actually listening to this
- 7:13December of 2025 because we you utilize this content right.
- 7:17So I'm going to ask everybody who sits down with us give us a
- 7:19prediction for this upcoming year.
- 7:21It could be Drake related, it could be world record related,
- 7:24it could be NCAA. You, you just make a prediction
- 7:26and we're going to find out how close you were in December of
- 7:292025. Well, for one, Team USA will
- 7:32just gotten back from Japan with another incredible performance.
- 7:35There's no doubt about that. Number 2 NCA will only be faster
- 7:39than it. Was true.
- 7:41And as we sit today and then I think there will be some shifts.
- 7:46I I don't know what will continue to happen at the NCA
- 7:50Division One level in terms of sports.
- 7:51Sponsorship. Right.
- 7:52In terms of roster limits, those are all unknowns in this moment,
- 7:55right? But I do believe that as we all
- 7:59continue to collaborate with leaders like you contributing in
- 8:01a central, central way, that we're going to be stronger.
- 8:05Yeah, we might be streamlined at some levels and there may be
- 8:09some reformation of the the, the way schools invest, yeah.
- 8:15But I don't think that there's any risk to our.
- 8:19Future Yeah, I, I, I agree with that.
- 8:20I'm not a a chicken Little sky is falling.
- 8:22There's going to be changes, but we're strong and we're going to
- 8:25continue to move forward, I think.
- 8:27Well, there's no doubt about it. And women's track and field, I
- 8:29think is going to continue to prove that it is an incredible
- 8:31value, valuable. Asset.
- 8:33To every athletic department. In America.
- 8:35All right, well, that was a pretty benign prediction, but.
- 8:40But we'll take it. We'll take it.
- 8:41No, but I know you've. Got about 40.
- 8:43People. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:44I'm so grateful for everybody here.
- 8:46And we're going to try to get every last one of the guys and
- 8:48gals that are here waiting. And we're going to say thank
- 8:50you, Blake, man, thank you so much.
- 8:51Again, it's a three-year tradition of you leading us off
- 8:54here live in the Guild Connections podcast, and it
- 8:57means a lot to us. Thank you so much.
- 8:58Thanks, Mike. Yes, Sir.
- 9:00It's no souvenirs you can't take.
